City officials have agreed to relinquish broad power over the embattled Oakland Police Department to a court-appointed director to avert what would be an unprecedented federal takeover.

As part of a tentative deal announced Wednesday, the compliance director could seek approval from a judge to fire the police chief.

U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson could approve the deal at a hearing next week. He demanded last month that the parties reach some sort of agreement now that a decade has passed since a federal judge ordered reforms to settle a police brutality lawsuit.

The agreement allows the department to avoid the “stigma” of being under federal receivership, said attorney John Burris, who has been overseeing the brutality lawsuit settlement with fellow lawyer Jim Chanin.

However, Burris said the department will still be under some federal control.

“It is a good proposal and it has some teeth to it,” he said. “We really wanted to have someone in place outside of the city with the authority to remove the chief and or his command staff. … It speaks to the accountability of the Police Department and its officers.”

Police Chief Howard Jordan and Mayor Jean Quan told reporters Wednesday that they also were pleased with the deal and believe it moves the department forward.

Last month, attorneys for Oakland asked the judge to allow the city to appoint an onsite compliance director.

“I think everyone at that table wants OPD to be at the forefront in terms of leading constitutional policing and building and supporting and maintaining public trust,” Jordan said.

Quan added, “This is something that we want. Oakland has a stake in making sure that the community trusts the department.”

Oakland’s deal is close to being a receivership, which would have given federal officials full control of the department, said Robert Weisberg, a law professor at Stanford University. However, under the agreement, the city will have a say in choosing a compliance director.

“It’s a subtle kind of arrangement as a compliance officer is a shade below under the strict control of a federal receiver, but it still allows the judge to monitor things,” said Weisberg, director of Stanford’s Criminal Justice Center. “It appeared that the possibility of receivership caused both parties to finally realize that they had to find some common ground after all of these years.”

The compliance director would be required to get the Police Department to complete its reforms by the end of 2013.

Burris said a critical step will be selecting a director, “preferably a former police chief who has worked in a major department and has excellent knowledge of law enforcement and good communication skills.”

Jordan told reporters the city is in the process of identifying potential compliance directors.

Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Washington, D.C.-based Police Executive Research Forum, said Oakland was long overdue for a solution.

“I think it’s unfortunate that it had to come to this point,” Wexler said Thursday. He added, however, that a third party might help resolve the problems.

Barry Donelan, president of the Oakland Police Officers Association, said the near 11th-hour deal finally removes some uncertainty surrounding the beleaguered department. He noted that the department has 200 fewer officers than four years ago and is battling a violent crime rate that is up more than 23 percent from last year.

“This deals gives us some leadership in our city that is certainly needed,” Donelan said. “The crime rate is souring, our officers are overworked, and we welcome someone who can help us get into compliance.”

The 2003 lawsuit was filed amid claims that several rogue officers beat or framed drug suspects in 2000. The claims resulted in nearly $11 million in payments to 119 plaintiffs and attorneys.

The settlement initially called for the reforms to be completed within five years. But Burris and Chanin said high-ranking city officials have thwarted those efforts, and the lawyers asked the judge in October to place the department under federal control.

A frustrated Judge Henderson said in January that he was “in disbelief” that the Oakland police had failed to adopt the reforms and threatened federal takeover of the agency.

A federal monitor appointed to the case repeatedly reported that the department was stalling on completing key tasks, including tracking problem officers and reporting the use of force.

However, Jordan and Quan have insisted the department is making progress with the reforms. City attorneys said 10 of 51 assigned tasks were left to complete.

If Henderson approves the deal, he would hold a status conference about six months after a compliance director is chosen. If he doesn’t see any acceptable progress, he could issue several orders including receivership.

Johnson & Johnson Supplier Sued For Racial Discrimination By Local Workers (VIDEO) | Progress Illinois.

A convicted sex offender accused of videotaping himself sexually terrorizing children from his wife’s unlicensed day care business has been indicted, authorities said Thursday.

John Burbine, 49, savagely preyed on 13 day care clients ranging from 8 days to 3-1/2 years old, with many of the assaults happening in the victims’ homes where he was babysitting them.

Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone said Burbine has been in custody since September on charges involving one victim that grew out of an abuse complaint from July. The pedophile faces an indictment including 100 criminal counts.

The prosecutor said the abuse occurred between August 2010 and August 2012. Leone said the children lived in the Boston suburbs of Stoneham, Medford, Newton, Reading, Melrose, Woburn and Waltham. He said there may be more victims that investigators haven’t identified.

The prosecutor said Burbine’s wife, Marian Burbine, operated Waterfall Education Center in Wakefield. The business advertised services including short- and long-term child care, group child care, overnight newborn care and summer camp alternative care.

Leone said investigators believe Marian Burbine didn’t know her husband was raping children, but she knew he was a convicted sexual terrorist and that state officials believed child abuse allegations against him in 2005 and 2009 that never led to prosecution. Both spouses face charges of operating an unlicensed day care business.

Among the offenses John Burbine faces are 40 counts of aggravated forcible rape of a child. His attorney, William Barabino, said Thursday that the defendant will plead not guilty at his Dec. 12 arraignment. A judge previously ordered the defendant held without bail.

Marian Burbine is free on $1,000 bail following her Oct. 1 arraignment in Middlesex Superior Court. She must wear a GPS monitoring device as a condition of her bail. An indictment against the 46-year-old includes six counts of reckless endangerment of a child.

Leone said John Burbine is a Level 1 sex offender, following a 1989 conviction for indecent assault and battery.

A Belgian court says the cartoon, which is sold in the UK with the warning it includes racist content, is “full of gentle humour”.

Even author Georges Remi said Tintin reflected the prejudices of the time

Tintin in the Congo is not racist, but a story full of “gentle and candid humour”, according to the Belgian Appeals court.

The second of Herge’s adventures of the boy reporter and his dog Tintin features the character of a stupid black helper and a woman who  at one point says: “White man very great.”

The cartoon strip, which was written in the 1920s, is sold in Britain with the warning that it includes racist content, following a ruling in a British court in 2007.

However, the Belgian court rejected claims of racism and the argument that the book was full of negative racist attitudes that could still have an impact on children who read it today.

The appeal had been brought after a 2011 ruling which found that Tintin was not racist and should not be banned.

It was brought by a Congolese immigrant, Bienvenu Mbutu Mondondo, and the Belgian Council of Black Associations.

He said the book should be banned in Belgium, which has a history of colonial aggression, exploitation and violence in the Congo, because of the number of damaging black stereotypes.

He said that Tintin employed a little black helper who was seen as “stupid and without qualities”.

“It makes people think that blacks have not evolved,” he said.

In one scene, a black woman prostrates herself before Tintin, saying: “White man very great. White mister is big juju man.”

Alain Amici, a lawyer for Mr Mondondo’s group, told the court at the original case in 2011: “The negative stereotypes portrayed in this book are still read by a significant number of children. They have an impact on their behaviour.”

Even Tintin author Herge, whose real name is Georges Remi, admitted in later life that the cartoon strip was a “youthful sin” and reflected the prejudices of its time.

The group has also tried to have the cartoon banned in France, but failed.

Tintin’s Congo Adventure ‘Not Racist’, Court Says.

Debate over whether a traditional Dutch Christmas character is a harmless festive figure or an oppressive racist incarnation has been reignited in the Netherlands as the festive season approaches.

St Nicholas Day is celebrated in the Netherlands on 6 December, not only with the arrival of Santa Claus (Sinterklaas), but with his pageboy helper ‘Zwarte Piet’ or Black Pete.

Together with Sinterklaas, Zwarte Piet helps deliver Christmas gifts and sweets to those children who have been “good.” If you’ve been bad, the legend says that Black Pete will kidnap you in his sack and take you back to Spain.

Zwarte Piet or ‘Black Pete’ as he is known, helps St Nicholas or Sinterklaas  

The traditional costume for Zwarte Piet involves black make up, red lipstick, an afro wig and Tudor ruff. He also wears a ring in his ear.

With his ‘blackface’, Moorish costume and devious entertaining skills, he resembles all the negative representations of black people in the 20th century including minstrels and golliwogs.

Mainstream Dutch opinion does not condemn Zwarte Piet in his subservient role to white jolly St Nick, or appear to recognise how the issue might be perceived internationally, given the historical links with Dutch empire expansion and the slave trade.

Children are told Zwarte Piet got his face black from delivering presents 

Rebel voices in the country who label Black Pete as racist have been dismissed by the argument that Zwarte Pieten are black because they have soot on their faces from going down chimneys delivering presents, reported AP.

Others are told Zwarte Piet is a harmless children’s holiday character and to connect him with minstrel or blackface traditions merely reflects on the inherent (and adult-enforced) racism of the critic, according to one Dutch blogger.

However criticism is growing toward Zwarte Pete both in the Netherlands and internationally.

Mothers have complained, pointing to the fact that their small children are bullied at school and come home crying, saying they have been called Zwarte Piet.

Zwarte Piet performers often shock tourists visiting Dutch places 

Last year the debate over Zwarte Piet became polarised after a protester complaining about racism was rough handled by police officers.

Performance artist Quinsy Gario wore a T-shirt saying Zwarte Piet is racist after his mother came home “trembling with rage” because she was called Zwarte Piet at work.

Three police officers pinned him to the ground after he and kneed him in the back. They also pepper-sprayed him and he spent six hours in a cell. However he was not prosecuted after the incident made headlines around the Netherlands.

Dutch politician Andrée Christine van Es, executive of the city of Amsterdam for GreenLeft, spoke out against the tradition this year, saying: “It started out without Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet is the time to go through with it without Black Pete.”

Jessica Silversmith, director of the regional Anti-Discrimination Bureau for Amsterdam told the Associated Press opposition towards the Zwarte Piet tradition is growing:

“It’s not only Antilleans or Surinamers who are complaining,” she said, referring to people from former Dutch colonies involved in the slave trade. “It’s all kinds of Dutch people.”

Commentator Greg Shapiro expressed his own fears in the Netherlands news site Dutch News that he is making his child racist after his six-year-old referred to a DHL delivery man as Zwarte Pete making him feel ashamed.

Police said ‘you wouldn’t want to know what gets shouted at Zwarte Piet’ 
Even the traditionally right wing Dutch news website GeenStijl reports that:

“Zwarte Piet is nothing more than a repulsive parody of a slave, fine-tuned to indoctrinate schoolchildren into the finer points of racism … The sooner we get rid of Zwarte Piet, the sooner we won’t look like idiots to the rest of the world,” according to AP.

Fresh examples of the racism generated by Zwarte Piet was seen this year after Dutch Police dressed as the character to go “undercover” during holiday parties. The police had to arrest some of the people they encountered because of the discriminatory comments.

“You would not want to know all the things which are shouted at Piets,” a spokesman for Rotterdam Police force told local journalists, reported The Expatica.

Is Black-On-Black Love Taboo?

From reality and trash-talk TV shows to sensationalized interracial relationship books, movies, and Internet articles, blacks are BOMBARDED by a daily barrage of negative (and false) information about black-on-black love. On the heels of all this “black love is bad” news comes the mainstream media’s manufactured cure: interracial relationships.

 What is the REAL agenda behind the Interracial Con Game and why are blacks the main targets? “Debunking the Top Ten Interracial Myths” will provide some interesting — and controversial answers — and some long overdue food for thought.

Thirty-five years after the death in police custody of Steve Biko, an online archive about the South African anti-apartheid activist has been published.

It features documents never seen before in public, including his 1973 banning order restricting his activities.

Curated by the Steve Biko Foundation, the archive is part of 42 historical exhibitions published by Google.

They aim to narrate major events of the last century, including apartheid, D-Day and the Holocaust.

Google says each exhibition in its Cultural Institute initiative has links to archive material to give different perspectives on the events.

“First-hand testimonials, photographs or manuscripts – many times these things are not accessible because they’re either held within vaults or people can’t travel thousands of miles to get to them,” Mark Yoshitake of Google’s Cultural Institute said.

“The aim of the Cultural Institute is to preserve and promote culture online and make it accessible to the world,” he said.

The Steve Biko archive goes back to his childhood and shows his political awakening as a 15 year old.

He went on to become a medical student at the University of Natal when he founded the Black Consciousness Movement aimed at empowering and mobilising the urban black population.

Seen as a martyr in the anti-apartheid struggle, he died at the age of 30 of major head injuries on 12 September 1977 after spending nearly a month in police custody.

His death caused outrage in South Africa and was the subject of the Hollywood film Cry Freedom.

“Steve Biko was a banned person – he was not allowed to be quoted, he couldn’t publish anything, his image could not be printed in the newspaper,” Obenewa Amponsah of the Steve Biko Foundation said.

“He didn’t really take no for an answer, he always questioned the why behind the way things happened,” she said.

Ms Amponsah says the Google Cultural Institute initiative has allowed the foundation to make material in Johannesburg stored in books and boxes available to the world.

Steve Biko’s school certificates, covers of the newsletters produced by South African Students’ Organisation which he helped found, and his Black People’s Convention membership card are among documents not released before in the public domain.

“This platform has really helped to bring the material to life in a way we hadn’t had an opportunity to do before,” Ms Amponsah said.

Talk to someone who has never dealt with the cops about police behaving badly, and he or she will inevitably say, “But they can’t do that! Can they?” The question of what the cops can or can’t do is natural enough for someone who never deals with cops, especially if their inexperience is due to class and/or race privilege. But a public defender would describe that question as naïve. In short, the cops can do almost anything they want, and often the most maddening tactics are actually completely legal.

There are many reasons for this, but three historical developments stand out: the war on drugs provided the template for social control based on race; 9/11 gave federal and local officials the opportunity to ensnare Muslims (and activists) in the ever-increasing surveillance and incarceration state; and a lack of concern from the public at large means these tactics can be applied, often controversy-free, to anyone who resists them.

What follows are 10 of the innumerable tactics the police can use against a population often incapable of constraining their behavior.

1. Infiltration, informants and monitoring. The NYPD’s Demographics Unit has engaged in a massive surveillance program directed at Muslims throughout the entire Northeast region, ignoring any jurisdictional limitations and acting as a secret police and intelligence gathering agency – a regional FBI of sorts. The AP’s award-winning reports [3] on the Demographics Unit helped bring some information about the program to light, including the revelation that its efforts have resulted in exactly zero terrorism leads. [4]

Although a lawsuit from 1971, the Handschu case, [4] “resulted in federal guidelines that prohibit the NYPD from collecting information about political speech unless it is related to potential terrorism,” legal experts worry that privacy rights have been so diminished that Muslims who are spied on may not be able to seek recourse. The AP quoted [5] Donna Lieberman in November 2011, who said, “It’s really not clear that people can do anything if they’ve been subjected to unlawful surveillance anymore.”

Muslims are not the only group that has been targeted. The AP reported [6] that the NYPD has also infiltrated liberal groups and protest organizers. Other cases of entrapment of activists, such as the NATO 5 [7] and the Cleveland 5, are also troubling. [8]

2. Warrantless home surveillance. Just in case you still think there must be some limit on how the authorities can surveil you, there’s this — a federal agency, not the police, but the larger point stands. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that it is legal for a law enforcement agent [9] to enter your house and videotape you without your consent. The case, United States v. Wahchumwah, revolved around a U.S. Fish and Wildlife undercover agent who recorded Wahchumwah without a warrant. The Ninth Circuit found the search to be “voluntary,” which led the EFF to write on its Web site: “The sad truth is that as technology continues to advance, surveillance becomes ‘voluntary’ only by virtue of the fact we live in a modern society where technology is becoming cheaper, easier and more invasive.”

The Ninth Circuit isn’t the only one who thinks warrantless video surveillance is perfectly OK. [10]

“CNET has learned that U.S. District Judge William Griesbach [11] ruled that it was reasonable for Drug Enforcement Administration agents to enter rural property without permission — and without a warrant — to install multiple ‘covert digital surveillance cameras’ in hopes of uncovering evidence that 30 to 40 marijuana plants were being grown.”

During the Bush years, Congress had to grant retroactive immunity to giant telecoms that engaged in warrantless wiretapping. It seems, the judicial branch wants to save Congress the trouble.

3. Preemptive visits and harassment. One of the favorite tactics of police departments is targeting activists a day before a large event. We saw this on May Day in New York City, as cops descended on several activists’ apartments before the day of action, [12] and in Chicago before the massive No NATO protests. [13] The Cleveland 5 were also arrested before May Day, and back in 2008 the RNC8 were also preemptively arrested. [7]

4. Creating call logs from stolen phones. If you lose your phone in NYC and report it to the police, they’ll help you find it. So far, so good. Where the agreement turns pear-shaped, however, is what they do with your call logs. The NYPD subpoenas your call log from the day it was stolen onward, under the logic that the records could help find your phone.

But — and here’s the kicker — they get info for the calls you made on the day it was swiped, and possibly even info from your new cell phone if you keep your number. The information is added to a database called the Enterprise Case Management System, and the numbers are hyperlinked for cross-referencing. The call logs, all obtained without a court order and often without the victim’s permission or knowledge, could “conceivably be used for any investigative purpose,” according to the New York Times. [14]

5. Consent searches. Sometimes a cop gives you a command, but phrases it as a question, like, “Would you open your bag so I can look inside?” If you’re anything like the vast majority of people in the United States, you have no idea that you’re under no lawful obligation to answer in the affirmative. You can, legally speaking, ask if you are being detained, and if the answer is no, you are free to walk away. Or at the very least, not open your bag.

Cops are aware that they can intimidate someone they decide to search, and once they obtain “consent” – e.g. “Yes, man with a gun who is towering over me, you can look in my bag” – any evidence of criminality they find can be used in court. This method of searching people was developed, like several other tactics on this list, during the early 1980s when the Reagan administration ramped up the so-called war on drugs.

Many critics argue that the very idea of a “consensual” interaction between police and the public is impossible, if the police initiate contact. As Justin Peters writes [15], “[Police] know the average person doesn’t feel they’re in a position to decline a conversation with a cop.” A common tactic [16] is for officers to say they’ll let someone off with a warning, then proceed to ask a bunch of questions, even though the person is technically free to go.

6. Stop and frisk. You’ve probably heard about stop and frisk by now, but for years this odious tactic – and close cousin to consent searches – went woefully underreported in establishment media. The NYCLU released staggering statistics for the year 2011 detailing the massive size of the program in New York City. One particularly memorable figure was that the NYPD stopped more young men of color than there are men of color in NYC. [17] (More information at stopmassincarceration.org [18].)

7. Pretext stops (Operation Pipeline). The Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that cops are free to use minor traffic violations as a pretext to pull over people they suspect of committing drug crimes. Once pulled over, the police obtain “consent” – “Would you get out of the car and empty your pockets?” – and can go on fishing expeditions.

In the Supreme Court’s ruling in Ohio v. Robinette, “The Court made clear to all lower courts that, from now on, the Fourth Amendment should place no meaningful constraints on the police in the War on Drugs,” writes Michelle Alexander in The New Jim Crow. The Court determined [19] that cops don’t have to tell motorists they’re free to leave before getting “permission” to search their car.

In the mid-1980s, the DEA rolled out Operation Pipeline, a federal program that trained city cops in the shady art of leveraging pretext stops into consent searches. The discretionary nature of many of these searches resulted in massive amounts of racial profiling, so much so that some officials say [20] “the reason racial profiling is a national problem is that it was initiated, and in many ways encouraged, by the federal government’s war on drugs.”

8. Police dogs. Don’t consent to cops searching your bag? If you’re in a car or an airport, police can bring in the dogs to smell your stuff, and if the dog responds, they have probable cause to search you without your consent. “The Supreme Court has ruled that walking a drug-sniffing dog around someone’s vehicle (or someone’s luggage) does not constitute a ‘search,’ and therefore does not trigger Fourth Amendment scrutiny,” Michelle Alexander writes.

But if a dog barks or sits, shouldn’t we be comfortable with that triggering probable cause? Radley Balko has reported on the phenomenon of drug dogs giving false positives after reading cues from their handlers [16]:

The problem isn’t that the dogs aren’t capable of picking up the scent; it’s that dogs have been bred to please and interact with humans. A dog can easily be manipulated to alert whenever needed. But even with conscientious cops, a dog without the proper training may pick up on its handler’s body language and alert whenever it detects its handler is suspicious.

This is called the “Clever Hans effect,” [21] named after the horse who could do arithmetic by tapping his hoof. In reality, the horse could recognize the shift in his owner’s body language when he had arrived at the right number.

9. Surveillance drones. The drones are coming, and the few illusions of privacy we cling to will soon disappear. The domestic market for drones in the next decade is estimated in the billions, [22] and police departments are chomping at the bit to implement this new technology. Drones already patrol the US-Mexico border, [23] and cities such as Seattle are moving toward using surveillance drones [24]. In August, a North Dakota court ruled [25] that the first-ever drone-assisted arrest was perfectly legal.

In our ever more authoritarian society, [26] expect politicians and the lobbyists who fund their campaigns to justify increased incursions into privacy in the name of security. The short-term incentives to value privacy have been all but forgotten, as “if you’re not doing anything wrong you’ve got nothing to fear” has gone from self-evidently absurd cliché to national motto.

10. Enlist the private sector. The comedian Chris Laker says of privatization: “You can’t privatize everything. Learned that from RoboCop.” But it seems police departments haven’t learned that lesson. In Arizona, police enlisted the help of the Corrections Corporation of America, a private, for-profit prison corporation, in a drug sweep of a public school. PRWatch reports: [27]

“To invite for-profit prison guards to conduct law enforcement actions in a high school is perhaps the most direct expression of the ‘schools-to-prison pipeline’ I’ve ever seen,” said Caroline Isaacs, program director of the Tucson office of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a Quaker social justice organization that advocates for criminal justice reform.

The privatization of nearly all aspects of public life, from education to law enforcement, is a trend we should all find disturbing, not least of all when a company that profits from locking humans in cages is directly involved in the arrest process.

The larger point here is obvious. In the last decade, the Bill of Rights has been shredded at the federal level and the local level. There are few constraints on police, FBI, NSA, and private intelligence companies when it comes to surveillance of the public. That many of these programs and tactics are discretionary exacerbates and magnifies conscious and subconscious racist and classist attitudes among those who carry them out.

Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Code allowed Canadians to file complaints against those who spread messages of hate. A necessary law that allowed for resolve and systemic acknowledgement that racism and other schisms are not acceptable in Canada.

However, Section 13 has recently been abolished. You might ask why get rid of a necessary law that protects people from messages of hate. I know I ask this question daily.

Section 13 was absolutely necessary in order to create safe spaces in our communities by allowing citizens to respond to messages of hate and incitement of violence against visible minorities.

Islamaphobia is rampant, especially since the 9-11 attacks. Muslims have come under attack from many angles that include scrutiny through immigration, law enforcement, national intelligence/security, media and in general society. People hold many negatives opinions about the Islamic faith and culture, since the propaganda campaign epidemic that demonizes Islamics began.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has recently declared that the largest threat to Canadian society is Islamicism. As our government moves forward with the abolishment of Section 13 from Canadian Human Rights; Islamic people are now going to experience further human rights violations, which will be committed by the federal government. The Canadian government is engaging with several manners of oppression. Muslims are not the only people in the sights of the colonialist scope. First Nations child/family advocate Dr. Cindy Blackstock has began a successful and solid human rights complaint against the federal government for fatalities of aboriginal children, and other concerns pertaining to child welfare, due to administrative and legislative processes that are overtly racist, oppressive and marginalizing (this topic will be featured in an upcoming blog on First Nations child welfare).

It seems that the federal government has been having difficulties in it’s pursuit against Islamicism. Section 13 had got in the way of law enforcement and intelligence investigation processes of Islamic people. Moreover, the Conservative party is now pushing new controversial laws that rescind citizens human rights in order to push investigations and establish legislative authority to detain people under investigation of terrorism without evidence. These tactics combined present a major issue. Why is the conservative overly cautious of Islamicism, and equally concerned with First Nations groups who have been recently added to the terrorist watch list, and not concerned with racist extremist from the far right. Perhaps this is because Canada is built upon a white supremacist ideology. People will often argue this point I am making but if we look at the legacy of Canadian social policy and the formation of Canada as a nation we see that definitively and through quantified documentation that Canada is a nation built upon the privileges offered to the white superiorists. This is why abolishing Section 13 which has served to penalize right wing white extremists has been done rapidly; all while increasing investigative and detention legislation of ‘non-white’ individuals.

Another rational of the federal governments need to abolish Section 13 apparently comes from the blogosphere. Now that many right-wing-extremists are blogging in the public domain the Human Rights Commission has been reluctant to prosecute under Section 13. They felt it was a violation of free expression of these white supremacist bloggers. We would not want to suppress the rights of ‘white nationalist extremists’.

Interracial crime of white criminals against innocent blacks continue to be a problem in this society. Yet, black people can not express their outrage over such crimes without getting saddled with reminders from others that we should really be upset over (so-called) black-on-black crime. Sadly, some of those people who feel it is their job to tell what to feel to what are members of the black community.

I used to be one of those black men who thought we were our own problem. I didn’t want to blame the white man. And I thought something was wrong with us. It wasn’t until I did some heavy duty reading and research that I discovered that the problems facing some black communities across this nation were not entirely our fault. Yes, I still believe that we, as a people, must take accountability for what’s going on. The thing is we have, and part of the time, some black people take all accountability.

The problem is that if we conclude that we have a certain mental pathologies coming from some primitive fluke in our culture, we would ignore the realities that institutional racism still has a significant impact on communities of color. In a sense we would excuse any and all policies and actions taken against us because we believe that it is in our best interests. It is anything but.

It is not in our best interest to become the last hired and the first fired, become always suspect and getting shot because of it  and imprisoned at such stupefying rates. It has done more harm than good in the community. It’s not because we give society reasons to see us as undesirable criminals. It is because they see us that way due to the sickness of racism, and they want to make sure many of us do not progress.

Think about it this way: You’ve been in prison on a felony conviction. After you’re released – if you’re released, and apply for employment, you must indicate that you have been to prison. As a black felon the chances of you gaining any kind of immediate employment are slim.

Now, time passes and you’re still jobless. You’ve tried your hardest, but no one wants to hire you. You need money for food. What could you do?

Chances are you will end up breaking the law in order to get some money. You don’t want to, but you have to do something to survive another day. You may rob a store, burglarize a home or sell drugs. You don’t like to do it. You know you will risk going back to prison or killed, but since no one wants to give you an honest learning, what is there to do?

People, including blacks, must get it through their heads that we are not some sort of criminal race who lives for trouble and violence. Most black criminals are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They are poor, stuck between a rock and a hard place. Society pretty much has gave up on them. So, they have no choice but to commit crimes, including the violent ones.

This is not to ask for sympathy for the thugs and gangsters, but they are the end result of a system design to make sure they never advance. Some are fortunate enough to succeed above and beyond expectations. However, many are caught in the abyss of failure and destruction. It is society’s greatest shame to find excuses to allow this to happen continuously.

As a race of people, we are entering into a very crucial and decisive period in earth’s history. The signs of the times point to the fact that a major change is about to take place in the world and the critical question is shall we perish or shall we go on to victory? The positive forces of life are available to assist us, and “The Father desires to give us the Kingdom”. It is now up to us, therefore we must pragmatically examine and reassess everything we have been and are now doing to see if it works for or against us. Unfortunately, many of our people find it difficult to even begin to imagine that they can conceive a thought other than that which whites via the various media systems have conditioned them to think.

Christmas, historically, has no real religious significance except to the European world, as such it has no real meaning to us as A People for it does not culturally project us in a positive light. Therefore, its failure to meet this need means that it can only be working against our best interest. Understanding that there are still some immature members of our race who feel they couldn’t live without Christmas, we appeal to them to stop the wild spending and acting so foolishly during the Christmas season and divest themselves of this mania. The supposed happiness obtained from the MERRY Mess is too brief to pay such a physical, mental, spiritual and economic price for.”

The very nature of prison itself by pure design purposely suppresses that vital component that gives life and direction, that epitomizes love relationship between people either intimately or socially. The restraints that being in prison put on both the incarcerated as well as their loved one are only superseded by prison overseers’ feverish efforts to enhance their aim to sever the bonds of love and endearment between families and their loved ones.

This is accomplished in many different ways, while at the same time they pretend to want a positive connection between inmates and their inseparable loved ones, when just the opposite is true. This clearly explains the disassembling of the family visiting program, the shortened hours allowed for visiting, the high cost of phone calls, the strict mail process and regulations, the placement of various prisons in desolate and depopulated areas, and the overuse of SHUs.

These are just a few of the constraints employed to impede and eventually destroy the ties that bind any cohesiveness of love. You would think that a healthy and loving relationship shared between prisoners and their loved ones would be wholeheartedly embraced, supported and strengthened by those individuals charged with the obligation of running the prisons; yet undisputable proof plainly suggests that this isn’t the case, but rather is at odds with any suggestion of encouraging and bolstering the unions shared by loved ones.

It’s important that you understand the harmful impact of this treatment overall, not merely as a love interest, but a uniform issue that divides people all across the board. When you intentionally subdue love, caring and togetherness, you’re basically flatlining the potential of a nation of people, regardless of ethnic background or race. The propensity for love comes in many colors and faces. There is a need for social contact; it’s a must. Life itself is based on the ability to develop and grow in harmony with common concern and belief, promoting a union based on the importance of sharing love for each other.

The notion that emotional feelings and love interest ceases at the gates of the prison is blatantly absurd.

Prison on the other hand is in the business of pain and profit, not the solidarity of family or their common interest. Every single day families are torn apart not solely because of their separation by imprisonment, but more so by a calculated disconnect that purposely unhinges and disengages people caught in the labyrinth of prison chaos. No one wants to be seen as victims, but reality is reality, and there are victims on both sides of the wall who are connected by the travesty of loving someone confined and being unable to freely demonstrate their affection in a spirited manner.

Why does it matter that we not allow prison and prison authorities to completely eradicate us as loving human beings who treasure the belief in caring and loving? The fact that we’re in prison for alleged wrongdoing should never be the wedge that keeps us apart, but instead it should be the motivating factor that we use to beat back the process engineered by the corporate greed of big business, the prison industrial complex. Yet CDCR’s actions contradict their own rules, under Title (15) 3170 (A), which reads: “These regulations are made in recognition and consideration of the value of inmates’ visitation as a means of increasing safety in prisons, maintaining family and community connections, and preparing inmates for successful release and rehabilitation.”

They want you broken, tattered, distraught and embroiled in self-pity, because then you’re without the drive and spirit needed to engage them in battle for your right to vigorously take them to task, against their evilness, with the sights of prevailing victoriously. To allow them to disassociate you from any meaningful relationship is an abomination of any sought out undertaking of heartfelt devotion. By all standards of imprisonment and the characteristics of loving someone locked up, it is truth.

Yet by the same token you hold the keys as to how the standards play out for you in truth. To concede to the harshness of their pursuit is to surrender all hope and expectations of rising above the demeaning aspect of imprisonment and its enforcers. Loving and caring are more than just words; they represent the best in us as people that life, either in prison or out, has to offer. We must learn to re-engage with one another socially, emotionally and lovingly, because when we dismiss one another, we literally capitulate our present and future, rendering ourselves hopeless and irrelevant.

CDCR’s actions contradict their own rules, under Title (15) 3170 (A), which reads: “These regulations are made in recognition and consideration of the value of inmates’ visitation as a means of increasing safety in prisons, maintaining family and community connections, and preparing inmates for successful release and rehabilitation.”

If we refuse to show interest in our well-being, how can we expect those with proven histories of showing contempt for our concerns to even consider our needs and desires. Don’t allow yourself to become a passive victim to the cruelties of prison, deviously created to make us ineffective on either side of the wall. Be proactive in pursuit of establishing or re¬establishing relations with those who for whatever reason are in prison, repaying the debt according to the law, which everyone knows is always in the eye of the beholder, as well as being an inexact science.

The difference between someone who cares and someone who claims to care is simple: action versus inaction. It certainly can go a long way when someone knows that their fight isn’t in vain and others share their mission of not allowing isolation to render them invisible and ineffective. Consider that if doing right was so easy, there certainly wouldn’t be so much wrong at the forefront, but standing up can be a very daunting experience, however a most worthwhile one.

Let my voice, your voice, his voice and her voice be heard over the wall and through the wall, announcing the will of the righteous. Those of us who are limited in movement must continue to reach outward, and those who aren’t as restricted physically should reach inward and continue to show love and to embolden those who are institutionalized behind the fortifications of captivity and insensitivity. The wanton and immoral acts by the profiteers off of those confined should be held to answer, without haste, for deliberately denying everyone in or out the promise or possibility for loving beyond the boundaries of the prison perimeters.

The perception that he who wields the power is almighty, without flaw, is a delusion that must be vanquished, as to allow the significance of sensational emancipation called love to shine bright on either side of the barricade, unbound and complete. Love doesn’t stop at the gates, but it can begin only if together we forge a clear path for its emergence, fearless and devoutly unwavering against all odds.

If you without reservation love and truly care for someone locked up, then the only way to show it is to be about the business of exhibiting it beyond all doubt, at every opportunity, in all instances and occasions. To love is free yet sometimes expressing it isn’t. Nonetheless, it’s possible with sheer purpose and determination.

The day you stop loving is the day you for all practical purposes stop living!

If it’s love that is central between a man and a woman, that is entirely different from the love of a family member or associate, yet the essence of love is still unmistakable, to the point that the power is unshakable and not easily relinquished into triviality. It will withstand everything that is thrown its way with unfailing resolve. Of course there’ll be challenging moments, but what is love without checks, balances and crises. How can you know its strength if there are no moments of bedlam to gauge the durability?

The greatest truth to love shared is the trust between those involved. Always trust that which provides the best perspective in loving that person to the fullest, without hesitation. Your love can only be quantified for its reliability according to what you build it upon, not others. The success or failure resides with you alone, just as it should. Despite it all, the end result surely is on you, the crucible for sustainment of loving someone in prison. For all intents and purposes, the inspiration to love and give of one’s self to those in prison is a reflection of the inner soul that is indicative of what life, sensibilities and the appreciation of love that is endless entails.

Be the victor, not the victim who submits to the capriciousness of demonic actions that exude mental and physical suffering. Let love be the master of destiny. Leave no one behind! The day you stop loving is the day you for all practical purposes stop living!

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haitians have suffered widespread hunger following an unusually active storm season this year and are likely to experience more, according to a study released Friday.

The report, backed by a Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-based think tank, found that rural households in the heavily hit areas of Haiti’s west, north and Grand-Anse departments experienced what it termed “severe food shortages” after Hurricane Sandy and an unnamed storm that followed. The two merely brushed the Caribbean nation in October and November but caused major flooding and killed as many as 66 people.

Nearly 70 percent of the more than 1,000 households interviewed said they experienced moderate or severe hunger, according to the study, “After the Storm: Haiti’s Coming Food Crisis.”

The report was written by social scientists Athena Kolbe, Marie Puccio and Robert Muggah, who frequently work in the impoverished country. It echoes U.N. warnings that more than 1.5 million of Haiti’s people are at risk of malnutrition because they lost crops in the storms. As much as 90 percent of Haiti’s harvest season, much of it in the south, was destroyed in Sandy’s floods, the world body said.

“We look at all these things and expect to see there’s going to be food insecurity in six months,” said Kolbe, a doctoral candidate in social work and political science at University of Michigan. “There are going to be a lot of areas where there is not a lot food and we know what happens when there’s not a lot of food.”

Added Kolbe: “It’s pretty bleak.”

Kolbe and humanitarian workers fear Haiti could see a repeat of what happened in 2008. That year, a jump in food prices triggered more than a week of deadly rioting that ended in the ouster of the prime minister and his Cabinet.

In recent months, anti-government demonstrations have taken place in the capital and countryside. The protesters have aired grievances that range from alleged corruption in the administration of President Michel Martelly to a rising cost of living.

Backed by the Brazilian nonprofit think tank, the Igarape Institute, the study drew on data from 1,355 households, with a response rate of 84.7 percent. The surveys were done immediately after Hurricane Sandy and the unnamed storm that followed.

In all cases an adult living in the household was randomly chosen, based on which member had the most recent birthday, to complete the survey.

Those interviewed reported a wide range of damages and losses. Farmers lost plenty, with 68.3 percent reporting their crops destroyed, 77.3 percent losing seeds and 73 percent the loss of farming equipment and tools.

Such damage will force Haiti to import food from outside, which is often expensive, the study’s authors noted.

Help from family and friends abroad who wired money stemmed the spread of additional hunger, the report said. Households that received overseas remittances in the last 12 months were 8.1 times less likely to go hungry after the storm, it added.

Crops such as sorghum, millet and cassava plants were the most likely crops to survive the storm, farmers said. But crops that are fragile were partially or completely destroyed, including beans, peas, carrots and beets.

The study also said people in the countryside reported a “complete absence” of municipal services during the week after the hurricane. That meant no debris removal or contact with police and other government employee.

All I Want For…. Is An End To The Prison Industrial Complex « Internationalist Prison Books Collective.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Students at a Kanawha County school no longer have to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance, national anthem or anything else during morning observances.

Capital High School Principal Clinton Giles said he changed the school’s morning observance policy on Wednesday.

The policy now says students are expected to stand or sit silently during the pledge.

Several students had complained about being required to stand for another song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” that was played on Fridays over the school’s loudspeaker after the pledge and the national anthem. A parent also complained.

He says county school officials determined that eliminating the standing requirement would resolve the issue.

On Monday, Giles cancelled the pledge and the national anthem in response to the complaints.

A “white” teacher from New York City is accused of carrying out a three-year lesbian relationship with one of her teenage students – beginning when the girl was 13 years old.

Brooklyn teacher Urszula Jankowska, 33, was arrested and charged with sexual misconduct on Monday after first complaining that the young girl was threatening her on her Facebook page.

That complaint to a principal at Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design revealed their relationship when Jankowska accused the girl of posting threatening messages, according to reports.

The student told a school counsellor that she and Jankowska had become ‘intimate’ starting in 2008 when she was 13.

Three years later, in October of 2011, their perverted relationship ended she said.

Cops said the sexual misconduct occurred at various locations.

The Department of Education said Jankowska, who recently switched to teaching English as a second language at the school, was immediately removed from the school following the allegations.

She has since been charged with criminal sex act, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child.

Creating speculation by at least one student, Terrence Woods claims that the charges sound out of character for the wench.

‘She doesn’t really seem like that kind of a person at all,’ Woods who had Jankowska for English his sophomore year said. ‘She’s just a nice English teacher.’

It was not immediately known if she had an attorney.

The investigation is continuing.

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canada’s national public radio and television broadcaster, released a large report on Golden Dawn’s chapter in Montreal. The report focuses on the right-wing extremist party’s racist and xenophobic policy in Montreal.

Golden Dawn is preparing a food drive for Christmas with food distributed only to Christian Greeks. Their action,  like every previous one, is condemned by many Greeks, political observers and human rights advocates. “This is racial discrimination in its worst form,” said Montreal councilor Mary Deros of the Christmas food drive.

“Based on what we see and because there are Greek people who are starving, we decided to contact them to see if we can help them,” said Spiros Macrozonaris, Golden Dawn’s deputy leader in Montreal.

CBC journalist Joanne Vrakas claimed that she is facing threats by members of the Golden Dawn party because she had reported on this matter in the past. Her videos on Youtube receive inflammatory comments, referring to Jewish and Muslims.

“”To them, a Jew is not a Greek,” said Quebec’s Regional Director for B’nai Brith, Anna Ahronheim. “Jews’ history in Greece holds many years, so how can you say they’re not Greeks?”

The report said that many representatives from Greek organizations react and condemn Golden Dawn’s racist behavior in Montreal.
