Why is Daft Punk’s brother in the Forgotten Classic section? Precisely because he is Daft Punk’s brother. Paul de Homem-Christo aka Play Paul has been an ‘up and coming dance music talent’ for almost five years now. Man, if my brother was the guy in the robot suit that made ‘One More Time’, I’d be crankin’ out the number ones like Deadmau5 on speed. Or maybe that’s the problem? Too easy?

Or maybe he likes it that way. Keepin’ it real baby…

In any case, La La Land, a kitschy cover of the kitschy 2001 Green Velvet hit, did not a whole lot on the ’scene’. Well not when you consider all the people behind it (Gigolo Records, Ed Banger, Kitsune – basically god himself as far as I’m concerned).

And I don’t know why.

It was ‘doing’ the Electro House thing at a time when there was not a single ‘David Waxman presents: Ultra Records presents: DJ Johnny Buttkiss presents: Electro House Hits’ compilation. It had a filthy synth lead/bass, the kind that punches holes in cement, and a tight yet disjointed groove (filthy, the kind that punches holes in cement, tight yet disjointed? Reminds me of someone I went out with once).

Too repetitive you say? I prefer ‘hypnotic’. It works though! I’ve played this out several times, and it always gets a response even though few people know who it is. So while this is probably the most ‘well known’ track in the series so far, its not really…if you know what I mean.

C’mon, it’s an amazing track innit? And no auto tune for our man, oh no, he sings it straight baby! He’s punk like that (geddit?)! There’s also an Ed Banger All Stars remix of it and some others, but this ladies, is just huge!

Oh, and just for fun, here’s a live version featuring the man himself. He’s apparently not takin’ his advice when he sings ‘Somethin bout those little pills unreal the thrills they yield until they kill a million brain cells’…

Or maybe the dude’s just high on life!

Elektro-Rock ist sowas von 2007 – und 1997, vielleicht auch 2017 – das haben auch die Typen von Ed Banger begriffen, die vor zwei Jahren den Hype mit der Veröffentlichung von Justice’ “Cross” so richtig befeuerten. Und so ist auf dem Remixalbum “Red, black & blue” des 32jährigen DJ Mehdi, das das Label am 20. November veröffentlicht, eine deutlich entspanntere Gangart angesagt. Der Franzose mit tunesischen Wurzeln gibt den Originalen dennoch einen Schubs Richtung Dancefloor, ohne aber ihre Struktur im Kern zu verändern. Wie gut das gelingt, beweisen die folgenden drei Bearbeitungen:

Qu’est ce qu’on est bien chez Record Makers vous trouvez pas ! Puisqu’on y est, je vous propose d’y rester avec Kavinsky. De son vrai nom Vincent Belorgey, il a une dégaine qui sort hors du commun : Bad Boy en veston rouge, lunette vintage, et cheveux au vent (cela me rappel un certain Dan dans le film Chivers) et un style musical au sonorité des années 80 propre à lui qui m’a beaucoup séduit. Entouré par de grosses pointures du monde de l’Electro, on pensera à Sebastian, Mr Oizo ou encore Justice et Busy P, l’ancien militaire a sû s’imposer dans cet univers et est devenu une figure emblématique de la scène électronique parisienne depuis 2007. Il partagea avec Klaxons  la scène des premières parties des Dafts lors de leur tournée mondiale en 2007 et contribue à divers projets cinématographiques tels que Chivers, et Ultranova. Sul sito di Next, supplemento mensile culturale del quotidiano francese Libération, Olivier Wicker intervista Uffie (1987), “la protetta dei Justice”. Gossip a parte – Uffie è incinta – la notizia è che dopo circa tre anni di attesa e aspettative sta per uscire l’album d’esordio della Lolita di casa Ed Banger: a febbraio 2010, dice l’etichetta di culto per i club di mezzo mondo. Il primo singolo, Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans, che dà anche il titolo all’album, invece uscirà questo mese (il videoclip, apprendo dal profilo Twitter di Uffie – occhio ai fake, come segnala sul suo myspace -, è stato girato il 1° Ottobre scorso). Wicker, che presumibilmente ha ascoltato l’album in anteprima, scrive: “L’omaggio alle sonorità anni Ottanta è onnipresente ma distillato da piccoli tocchi, in sottili riferimenti, a volte quasi subliminali”.
Nel maggio 2007, accompagnato dalla fotografa Chiara Santarelli (la foto qui sotto è sua), ho incontrato Uffie a Parigi e qualche mese dopo ho pubblicato l’intervista su Beat Magazine (sul numero di Luglio-Agosto 2007). Per sapere qualcosa in più della prossima (electro-)popstar ecco, qui di seguito, l’intervista edita più qualche outtake/scarto della stessa, finora inedito.

Uffie, vero Anna-Catherine Hartley, vive in un quartiere di Parigi che lei stessa definisce un po’ “ghetto”: in effetti i palazzoni abbondano. Anche se vive in Francia da più di tre anni, col francese se la cava meglio a scriverlo che a parlarlo e il suo grado di comprensione è sufficiente, niente di più. D’altronde è americana, di Miami, quindi la sua madrelingua è quella universale, e questo può costituire una sorta di attenuante. A vederla fuori dal palco e non in pose iper-trendy come appare su siti e riviste di mezzo mondo, è una ragazza “normale”: di una bellezza non comune, ok, ma alla mano, a tratti timida, vestita senza dare troppo nell’occhio e quindi in fin dei conti senza l’aria di chi si sente superiore o quanto meno speciale (anche se dalle risposte capirete che aveva una discreta fretta). La cosa che può colpire chi semplicemente la incrocia per strada, magari senza conoscere il suo lato pubblico, è il biancore della pelle: ai livelli di Nicole Kidman. Insomma Uffie è umana, anche se ad appena diciannove anni ha invaso i club e conquistato le riviste (non solo musicali) più alla moda; tutto senza aver ancora pubblicato il suo primo album. Sarà che fa parte della scuderia Ed Banger, che per molti è stata l’etichetta del 2006; tra l’altro fondata da Pedro Winter (aka Busy P), già manager dei Daft Punk. Sarà che Dj Feadz, uno degli artisti della label parigina, è il suo compagno di palco ma anche di vita, e questa notizia ha stuzzicato anche l’aspetto gossip del personaggio. Sarà che uno dei suoi primi singoli, Ready To Uff in realtà sta per Ready To Fuck. Chissà. A voler definire il suo genere comunque si può parlare di electro-rap; ma non mancano gli spunti pop.
Perché hai scelto di vivere a Parigi?
In realtà ci sono venuta in vacanza a trovare mio padre che lavorava qui, poi la città mi è piaciuta veramente molto ed eccomi qui.
Dalla tua esperienza quali sono le differenti sostanziali tra il modo di vita americano e quello europeo?
Penso che quello europeo sia molto più aperto culturalmente. Negli Usa c’è troppa pressione riguardo sposarsi, andare al college e cose simili.
Stai suonando più in Europa o negli Usa?
Negli ultimi mesi ho passato qualche settimana negli Usa suonandoci varie volte. In Europa suono circa tre volte alla settimana.
Ci sono differenze tra i club europei e quelli statunitensi?
Quelli americani sono più commerciali, inoltre puoi entrare solo se hai più di 21 o, a volte, 23 anni; solitamente poi le persone vanno lì per farsi vedere. In Europa ci si va per divertirsi, fare i pazzi e fare casino.
Ma ti manca qualcosa degli Usa?
Uhmmm… capire la gente. Qui non posso capire tutto quello che dice la gente.
Canterai mai in francese?
No, ci ho anche provato ma non mi è piaciuto molto.
Come ti sembra la scena musicale di queste parti?
La scena francese è tornata in voga negli ultimi due d’anni, e la cosa veramente bella è che la musica che produciamo qui è davvero varia. Penso sia una scena che continuerà a crescere.
In una recente intervista a Beat Magazine, Cinematic Orchestra ha detto che “Parigi è vecchia” e che “i movimenti culturali, soprattutto musicali, non risiedono più qui”…
Non sono d’accordo. C’è stato solo un periodo in cui qui non è stato un granché, ma i primi tempi in cui il french touch e i Daft Punk sono venuti alla ribalta sono stati fantastici! Ok, poi per un po’ tutti hanno cercato di fare la stessa cosa: i Daft Punk si sono evoluti ma nessun altro si è evoluto con loro; quindi tutto è morto per un bel po’ di tempo. Penso che ora però realtà come la Ed Banger e gente della Institubes come Para One, TTC o Surkin stanno facendo molto bene, stanno spaccando in tutto il mondo facendo vedere quanto sono bravi e che non si tratta solo di roba commerciale. Ci sono molti artisti di talento qui e il mondo se ne sta accorgendo.
Il tuo album è molto atteso: queste aspettative ti creano tensione?
Certo. Il mio primo singolo è uscito tipo un anno fa ed ha fatto successo molto molto velocemente. Ci sono parecchie aspettative sensazionali, la gente si aspetta un album sorprendente. Insomma tanta pressione.
E ti spaventa l’attenzione della stampa nei tuoi confronti?
Non proprio, la cosa più importante per me non è ciò che dice la stampa, anche se sicuramente mi intimidisce.
Pensi si possano individuare degli argomenti ricorrenti nei tuoi testi?
Anche se non me ne accorgo quando li scrivo penso che i temi ricorrenti dei miei testi siano vivere e divertirsi. In qualche modo direi… no, non aggiungerei nient’altro.
Cosa pensi del ruolo di myspace?
Quando ho cominciato ci ho messo una canzone, così, per divertirmi, ma su myspace riesci a far passare cose che altrove farebbero fatica a essere accettate. Per la musica è un mezzo piuttosto importante, specie se sei agli esordi; e poi ci sono davvero tutti.
Ho letto una tua intervista in cui dici che la Ed Banger ti piace anche perché non ha come primo obiettivo il profitto. Ora come ora rifiuteresti la proposta di una major?
Sì, lo sto già facendo. Se accettasi, quello che faccio sarebbe accessibile a tutti, ma dico sempre no. Un giorno magari avrò voglia di farlo ma ora come ora mi voglio sentire libera di fare quello che mi pare, mi sento parte della scena underground e sto provando con tutte le mie forze a restare underground.
Che tipo di rapporto c’è tra gli artisti Ed Banger? E’ veramente una specie di famiglia, come sembra dall’esterno?
Sì, assolutamente. Passiamo molto tempo insieme e tutto sa davvero più di famiglia piuttosto che di etichetta: non c’è competizione, non c’è pressione a produrre; si cerca davvero di impegnarsi nella musica e divertirsi insieme.

Che ne dici dell’hip hop francese?
Non mi piace molto. Forse perché non capisco i testi ma in realtà c’è qualcosa nella parte strumentale che non mi piace.
Si può dire che alla Ed Banger avete tutti un background hip hop?
Sì… beh, Dj Mehdi è nell’hip hop da quando ha dodici anni, o qualcosa del genere, poi…
Mr. Oizo?
Lui non proprio, è più nell’electro. A dirla tutta ognuno ha un background differente: rock, electro, rap… è difficile da spiegare.
Ti senti parte di una scena?
Non proprio, ma in qualche modo mi sento più vicina alla scena dance/electro piuttosto che a quella hip hop.
Come funzionano i tuoi live?
Giro sempre con Dj Feadz, che cura tutta la parte musicale. Lo show è molto simile a quelli dell’old school con un dj e un mc. Anche se non mi si può definire proprio un mc lo show funziona proprio così, in un modo classico: un dj e un artista.
C’è un posto particolare o una città dove sogni di esibirti dal vivo?
Un posto dove avrei voluto suonare ma non ci sono riuscita è il Brasile. Non ce l’ho fatta per problemi di visto. Vorrei andarci perché ho sentito che lì la gente è veramente pazza.

my first glimspe of the o2. it did fill up.

so i went to spandau ballet in the o2. tony hadley dedicated true to stephen gately (rip). the whole crowd sang along (as much because it’s the band’s most famous song as anything else) and what was amazing was that i could still hear the band properly. maybe that was because i was two rows from the back, but anyway, i was still impressed.

friday night i hit the button factory for the ed banger night – i was hoping so me would be kind of kooky and weird, but he wasn’t that far outside of the ed banger mould. breakbot played some cool tunes, as did busy p. unfortunately i had to leave a little bit early so missed most of feadz’s set, though what i did hear was excellent as usual – such as a bmore version of the tetris theme (!) and bangalter’s outrun.

the following night i paid a visit to oktoberfest at chq, which was, in a word, surreal. there was a big hall, there were lots of benches and long tables, and a LOT of paulaner. that much i expected. i didn’t expect the chant/refrain of german nonsense, or hearing cotton eye joe, macarena and lots of dj otzi.

what was less surreal was jokers of the scene at colortv in wax. that was just great. except for the “random” body search on the way in – i’m thinking of getting this tee in protest. but that aside, it was awesome. the boys played a fantastic set – it was full of excellent techno, most of which i didn’t recognise, but it was expertly peppered with some of their own productions and remixes. it would have been easy for them to close on the unstoppable baggy bottom boys but they just kept on going. excellent stuff.

so today and yesterday i took it easy. i watched some generation kill, some peep show, and finally finished watching let the right one in. i liked it, less than the book (as is generally the case), but i thought it was an interesting and faithful, if hugely condensed, adaptation. i thought the book was exceptional in its detail, while the film was impressive by virtue of its use of vague suggestion and implication – brush strokes rather than minute detail.

this weekend i’m looking forward to the juan maclean, in flagranti and the field at tripod, and then i’m supporting mustard pimp on saturday at transmission. i’d love to be hitting some of the deaf nights, but alas i’m working almost every day so i don’t want to spread myself too thin! i did this weekend and it’s tough going. i’m getting old…

I don’t want to think about November just yet. Why? Well, because of the following: A. That means I’m one step closer to exxxtra freezing my behind off. B. Runny noses. They were either refused by the labels or dismissed for copyright infrigement…  Luckily we find them all here in this mix. It would have been a shame to miss some of these gems like the remixes of Mapei or Just Jack or Busta Rhymes… Well almost every single track of this mix is gold. It’s strange i feel this way because i’m not usually a fan of Mehdi’s work, but this definitely does it for me.

Waiwaiwaiwait, wait… Pop The Glock was released in 2006 && according to my Gregorian calendar its 2009. Damn, Uffie, you’re a little late there. I’ll cut the electro-hop princess some slack though, being virtually unrecognizable beyond coked out LA locals and Europeans generally limits your spending limit to one music video per 3 years anyway; especially when you weigh that in with all the designer clothes && drugs.

I don’t really know if I would still listen to this, but I used to really fuck with Uffie && the whole Ed Banger group’s music back in 06-07.

Swear, I’ve seen half the females in this video on lastnightsparty.

Is it just me or has Ed Banger been pimping out it’s artists like crazy lately. Every time I log on to my Facebook I notice all the new updates from Ed Banger. I am not complaining, I am loving it. It seemed for a short time they kind of just fizzled and laid on their laurels. Oh wow, watch out my anteater education is coming out.

When can we expect Justice to put out a new album? Who knows. But, we can be expecting the much anticipated, at least by me, full album from Uffie. I was over on the Ed Banger myspace and the album is to be titled, Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans. The next single to be released will be featuring Pharell Williams. I can’t wait…I am sure it will be nothing less than sheer genius.

Some other people who have been busy for Ed Banger are DJ Mehdi and Busy P, and Feadz. Feadz after doing work with Uffie finally released an EP called P*N*M*B. Ofcourse, Justice, has been remixing people like crazy. Lenny Kravtiz being one of them. Mr. Oizo released a full album, Lambs Anger. Busy P and DJ Mehdi have been around the world spinning at events. I tell you, this team has been pretty busy since the begining of the year.

I am sure only good things will come. Next, up, Stupid Bitches EP.

SHOULD HEAR SOME OF THE ED BANGER FAMILY ON THE LP. MY OPINION:
THE VIDEO MAY LOOK NICE, BUT THIS DOESN'T MAKE UP FOR THE 3
YEAR WAIT. SHE SHOULD'VE RELEASED A NEW SONG INSTEAD THIS
SONG BECAUSE WHO HONESTLY IS STILL LISTENING TO THIS SONG? THIS
ALBUM BETTER BE A 10/10!
