It’s strange to think that David Cronenberg has been freaking us out for thirty years. Be it the head explosion in Scanners, the creation of Brundlefly in The Fly, or even Ed Harris’ end in A History of Violence, his films have always existed on the far edge of extreme, even by today’s standards. When you consider the impact his films have had, it’s kind of strange that Hollywood has yet to make any crappy, updated remakes of them yet. There was a rumor a few years ago of a Scanners remake that never was, and Cronenberg himself signed on to remake The Fly back in September, but up until now the man’s work has been untouched. Now to drop the other shoe…

According to Shock Till You Drop, Cory Goodman, the writer of next year’s Paul Bettany film Priest, is refinishing his script for The Brood, a remake of Cronenberg’s film from 1979, and Spyglass Entertainment has a director interested in the project. The original film is about a man who begins to investigate the strange form of psychology that his wife’s doctor is practicing, at the same time as a group of mutant children terrorize the neighborhood. As his investigation continues, he learns that the two are actually related by a horrifying secret.

Recently I defended Michael Bay (while simultaneously expressing how odious his movies can be), and now I rush to the defense of another man used as a lazy punchline to a billion deeply unfunny jokes about bad cinema: the acting colossus called Nicolas Cage. As with Bay, Cage is treated like a cautionary tale about how that vile, Chthonic monolith called Hollywood can drive people insane with greed, how talented individuals can lose their way and begin a descent from making art to making dross. He is accused of sleepwalking through films, cashing checks, appearing in unworthy crowd-pleasing dreck, and working with anti-cinematic infidels. His personal life is raked over (he keeps impulsively marrying women! He calls his kid a silly name! He buys too much crap!), his eccentricities treated as signs of mental illness, and his success used as example number two in the case against modern culture (example one being the success of Bay). Only Ben Affleck is treated with less respect, a fact that I intend to address in a future post where I defend him too. (I’m serious about that. Affleck is awesome.)

There are millions who seem to love to take a short-cut in thinking and just refer to Cage as a has-been with no understanding of what a joke he has become, though Cage’s most famous critic has been Sean Penn, the former friend who once told the New York Times, “Nic Cage is no longer an actor. He could be again, but now he’s more like a…performer”. This was said around the time that Cage appeared in two Bruckheimer productions — The Rock and Con Air — which seems to be the one thing an artist can do that will sink his credibility. Why did Penn single out Cage for that and not Cage’s co-stars Ed Harris, or Sean Connery, or John Cusack, or John Malkovich? They’re respected actors who have won awards and are considered to be fine actors, but Cage falls into the line of fire for moving from carefully considered character pieces like Leaving Las Vegas to action movies, three of which he did in a row (the third being the classic John Woo SF actioner Face/Off). His wildly broad performances in those movies were almost certainly a factor, but then he has always given broad performances, within which lie subtle moments (see also Wild At Heart, Birdy, Peggy Sue Got Married, etc.). They’re entertaining displays of eye-rolling crowd-pleasing acting pyrotechnics, but there’s a soul there too. This is what I think of as getting The Full-On Cage Experience, with madness and soulfulness tied together. Penn could never pull off anything like that. When he mugs, he ends up wrecking the movie.

By all that’s holy and unholy, how much better was Penn in Milk, or Dead Man Walking (incidentally, that’s one of my favourite screen performances of all time)? It’s not even a fair competition. Besides, this accusation, insinuating that Cage is no longer an actor, is rich coming from someone who appeared in I Am Sam. I’ll take an entertaining and unpretentious actor having fun playing a demonic avenger with a flaming skull than some humourless chide wasting his talent on Oscar-baiting bullshit like that any day of the week. Sadly, Penn’s not the only one who thinks Cage has pissed his talent away. In this little essay, Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman compares Cage to Dr. Wesley T. Snipes, which is prescient considering Cage’s current tax woes, but while Snipes has descended into Direct-To-DVD hell, Cage is still working on big-budget movies and smaller curios, still attracting the viewing public, and still cranking out performances that are — at best — thrilling, and — at worst — merely entertaining.

The one argument that genuinely annoys me is the one where Cage is cranking out piss-poor, lazy performances since his last truly astonishing performance in Jonze and Kaufman’s Adaptation. I’ve often said that I think his work in that (along with his work in Leaving Las Vegas and Raising Arizona) deserves a coveted Shades of Caruso Free Pass…

…but of all the movies he has made since, only three performances really disappointed me: his work as Benjamin Gates in the first National Treasure movie, where he seemed awfully tired; his creepy performance in Next, the empty action thriller adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s clever short story; and his catatonic turn as a greasy-haired loser assassin in the disastrous remake of Bangkok Dangerous, which I suspect he took so he could get a holiday in Thailand. That last one really did give me cause for concern, but Gleiberman likes to make out that Cage is regularly signing on for “grade-Z genre schlockers”, which apparently include Ghost Rider and The Wicker Man. Neither of them are good movies, but they were not developed as low-budget cash-ins. Ghost Rider was obviously meant to be a big comic book adaptation, with a pretty good cast and a $110m budget, and even if it was absolutely dire, it was made with love by fans of the character, of which Cage is one.

The Wicker Man is a dumb-ass movie by any standards, but it’s made by Neil LaBute, who was once a promising director. He could have turned in a thoughtless remake of the excellent original (which would fit under Gleiberman’s umbrella of “genre schlocker”) but instead made something personal, for better or worse. For all it’s faults it’s obviously of a part with his other movies, dealing with his favourite themes of misanthropy, deceit, misogyny, fear of opening up to others, and gynophobia. I’ve occasionally argued that The Wicker Man is a satire on male fear of impotence and castration, a paranoid comical fantasy about a scheming cabal of exaggerated feminist ballbreakers who are out to destroy the penis, turning all men into drones and semen-donors whose sexuality is merely a sacrifice of power to the almighty womb in order to replenish the earth with children.

Sadly, even if this was LaBute’s intention — and even if Cage was in on this project for that reason alone — it’s still ridiculous and poorly made and filled with wonderfully camp moments. Cage maintains that the comedic aspects of the movie were not lost on him. In an interview with Spike Jonze, Drew McWeeny discusses meeting Cage, and Jonze is full of praise:

Jonze: I love [Cage]. We had the best time working together. He really works and focuses.
McWeeny: His publicist was a little wary of me being there, I guess, because he doesn’t do a lot of press and he doesn’t allow press around a lot, but he really was very accessible once I’d been there for a few days, and he kind of warmed up to me. And he was really just fascinating. I loved chatting with him about stuff.
Jonze: Totally chill.
McWeeny: Yeah. And I think far more self-aware than most people think. Like I think some people think Nic is in this vacuum and doesn’t realize how crazy some of his performances are. I got the feeling he was totally aware of how people perceive things. We were talking about THE WICKER MAN, and he was like, “How do people call that an unintentional comedy? I’m in a bear suit kicking Lelee Sobieski in the throat. I know it’s funny.”
Jonze: He just takes it so seriously that nobody knows how to take him. Like PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, I was like, “What is that?” Like I was 15 so I didn’t really know.
McWeeny: I just love how you can always count on him to push things further, like VAMPIRE’S KISS. He ate a roach, man.
Jonze: And also just the insanity of that performance, just the balls-out fearlessness.

Is it enough that Cage is aware of the ridiculousness of the movies he is appearing in? For me it is. I strongly suspect Cage is the most easily bored person in the world, and unfortunately that is paired with the ability to get work in movies that pay millions of dollars for him to spend on cars and comics and castles. Some of the films he has been in lately are truly awful, and I would never argue that they weren’t. Neverthless, I watch them for those flashes of manic commitment from Cage — The Partial Cage Experience — that delight me so. Are they valid acting choices, or is he merely trying to entertain himself while he trudges through formulaic populist bilge? As far as I’m concerned, even if he’s merely trying to entertain himself, he succeeding in entertaining me, and surely that’s what counts.

The only other popular actors that delight me as much are Clooney (who can do pathos and comedy equally well), Streep (who is always the best thing about everything she has ever been in), and maybe Jeff Bridges. Even those fine actors have not given me as much pleasure as Cage does, even when you forget about his early, golden years and concentrate on this bizarre stretch of poor movies. Since Adaptation we’ve had the insanity of Not The Bees…

…a literally hysterical fiery transformation…

…a Shout-Off with Rose Byrne (who is utterly overmatched, despite her invention of the word “chuldren”)…

…a run in with an obnoxious know-it-all child (the best part of which is how he treats the kid like an adult for most of the scene)…

…and a frustrating teaser of what could be his finest hour, if ever Rob Zombie got the money to make it…

His willingness to make fun of himself is the thing that keeps his crazy public and professional persona viable, and though many of his actions seem completely deranged, I honestly believe he’s playing a trick on us. Can someone who makes a series of adverts like these really be unintentionally weird?

(N.B. Anyone who has a sense of humour about themselves gets a break from me. Even the reportedly tyrannical and insensitive director Michael Bay gets points for playing up to his image with this commercial for Verizon:)

I’m a fully paid up Cage fan. For entertainment value, he can’t be beat. To see a person with such intelligence, quirkiness, restlessness, fearlessness, and energy do his thing in such big-screen movies is a rare thrill. If I squint I can see why Cage is now considered a hack by critics and film-watchers, because it’s easy to confuse being in a terrible movie and actually being terrible, but I worry that maybe people are also turned off by his intensity and his allegiance to the weird. The odd soporific performance aside, perhaps what baffles people the most is seeing him devote so much energy to projects that they feel don’t deserve it. Personally, I think that’s admirable. He’s getting paid enough, after all. Dance, you fucking monkey! Dance for your millions!

And yet even though I revel in his passionate and unpredictable work in crud, I’ve become concerned that we would never get another performance out of Cage that is as electrifying as his best work (disclaimer: I’ve not seen Lord of War or The Weather Man, and some have said he gives solid, rounded performances in both). Once upon a time he would work with Lynch and Scorsese, and the performances he gave were over-the-top yet grounded in some kind of emotional profundity, but lately those performances — while entertaining, memorable, and stronger than popular wisdom would have you believe — are lacking that extra fire. Well, I’m happy to report the return of The Full-On Cage Experience, as he takes on the task of being the 21st Century Klaus Kinski. More on that tomorrow, when I review Werner Herzog’s excellent Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

In preparation for the holiday release of Avatar, I figured now was as good a time as any to do a little James Cameron catching up.  Although if anything, I don’t think The Abyss can be called little…

I’ve always been a big fan of Cameron’s, I guess.  Terminator 2 is one of my favorite films of all time, and I have a decent amount of respect for the now ubiquitous Titanic.  And I’ve sort of known about Cameron’s tyrannical directorial style.  But I don’t think I ever really comprehended Cameron’s unique style as a director until now.  The Abyss, while maybe not his best work, seems to tie everything he does together better than anything else of his that I’ve ever seen.

Should I just list the themes here?  In The Abyss, we’ve got a strong central female protagonist, underwater / deep sea elements, science fiction aliens, awesome special effects, and a heartfelt love story in the middle of potential danger and disaster.  This movie is quite literally bursting at the seams, with an exhausting overflow of genre bending.  Are we watching a science fiction movie?  Or just an action / adventure?  Or no, it’s really a romance, right!?  I definitely don’t want to say this movie was bad, because it definitely wasn’t.  It was just a lot. There was so much going on, all the time, that it could be subtly exhausting.  You don’t realize you are getting run all over the place until the movie ends and you attempt to digest everything you just saw.  That’s when the “whoa, wait a minute…” moment hits.

I want to discuss specific things I did or did not like, but there is too much jumbling around to really successfully cling to anything.  There was a lot good, there was a bit not so good, and it reminded me a LOT of Armageddon.  Reading about the production process is both harrowing and invigorating.  I think now, more than ever before, I appreciate James Cameron’s influence on the films he has made.

Again, do I think this is Cameron’s best work?  Definitely not.  But I do think it is his most unfiltered and unadulterated, and I appreciate being able to see what I think Cameron really thinks a movie should be.  Now bring it on, Avatar

Teníamos en mente el estreno de Sin Perdón de Clint Eastwood y la verdad es que esperábamos algo parecido y sin embargo la sensación ha sido distinta. No nos hemos encontrado con un mundo visual tan particular como ocurrió con la premiada película, sino que nos hemos encontrados con un estudio en profundidad de los personajes. Ed Harris que dirige y protagoniza la historia de dos rangers justicieros que llegan a una ciudad para establecer la paz y la ley tiene mucho que ver con el guión de Eastwood, pero sin embargo el decorado es diferente a nivel personal: una mujer es la encargada de complicar todo el asunto y el hilo conductor de una película que presenta todos los tópicos del género y que no añade ni una sola novedad a la gran lista de película “de vaqueros”.

Teníamos grandes expectaciones ante esta película, pues el tema ocupó una parte muy importante del tiempo de cine durante el pasado siglo y tuvo su punto culminante con el estreno de Sin Perdón y hay que tener en cuenta de que eso ya pasó hace 15 años. Y que la última experiencia El Tren de las 3.10 pasó sin pena ni gloria por las pantallas.

Ed Harris se vuelve a poner delante y detrás de la cámara, como ya hizo en el 2000 con Pollock y se rodea de buenos actores como Viggo Mortensen, y un inusitado Jeremy Irons en un papel de villano. La chica es Renée Zellweger a la que la experiencia de Bridget Jones había dejado un tanto encasillada; aquí, en un papel para bordar, pasa el listón con un aprobado raso. Curiosamente hay un pequeño papel para Ariadna Gil, que no desentona.

El guión se ambientada en 1882, en el territorio del antiguo oeste de Nuevo Méjico, “Appaloosa” es la historia del policía federal Virgil Coley de su asistente y socio Everett Hitch, quienes se han ganado una reputación como agentes de paz en las ciudades sin ley. En la pequeña comunidad minera de Appaloosa, un ranchero poderoso e implacable llamado Randall Bragg permite que su banda de forajidos haga de las suyas en el pueblo. Tras el asesinato a sangre fría del policía federal de Appaloosa, Cole y Hitch son contratados para llevar al asesino ante la justicia. Mientras devuelven el orden al pueblo con gran esfuerzo y con pistolas, Cole y Hitch conocen a la provocadora Allison French, cuyas formas puede hacer amenazar con destruir lo que han logrado en el pueblo y la amistad de más de una década de estos dos hombres de la ley.

No diré que aburra, pues es una gran película con unos personajes muy interesantes pero tampoco nos vamos a encontrar con una obra de arte total y sin embargo hay que recalcar que los dos protagonista dan un halo especial al ambiente, dos hombres de parecido físico increíble que afrontar sus vidas de una manera muy especial y que se ven alterados por la presencia femenina intrigante.

DAMADENEGRO 

Não se pode negar a influência e contribuição da literatura para o cinema, seja ela da mais variada forma ou nos mais variados gêneros. As Horas é um drama forte e encantador, baseado no livro homônimo do escritor norte-americano Michael Cunningham, que por sua vez se inspirou no romance Mrs. Dalloway de Virginia Woolf. Cunningham acabou pegando emprestado o título provisório do livro de Virginia. Tudo em homenagem à grande escritora.

Com roteiro escrito por David Hare  e dirigido por Stephen Daldry (o mesmo de Billy Elliot), este filme denso de 114 minutos, conta em seu elenco com  participação de Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep e Ed Harris. É fácil notar que a parceria dos envolvidos no projeto funcionou bem.

Na história, que segue bem a criação de Cunningham, somos apresentados a três tempos interpostos, contando enredos distintos entre si em espaço e tempo, mas que ao com o decorrer dos fatos vai se alinhando e se relacionando. Primeiramente temos um subúrbio de Londres em 1923 quando Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) escreve o livro Mrs. Dalloway; um subúrbio de Los Angeles em 1949 quando Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) ler avidamente o livro de Virginia e por fim Nova Iorque em 1990 quando Clarissa Vaugham (Meryl Streep) vive sua vidinha já descrita por Virgínia e lida por Laura. Só esse pequeno demonstrativo do que acontece já é um chamariz mais que eficiente para o filme (ou livro, os dois), mas é muito mais que isso.

Há verdades, mistérios, realidades tudo perfeitamente encaixado em uma história bem construída e justificada. É notável a semelhança na vida das três mulheres que lutam por suas vidas próprias e por se livrar de algemas a elas impostas por sociedades em diferentes épocas, podendo ser observado que a época contribui para o destino de cada uma, tudo resultante de suas escolhas. Algo nitidamente presente é a menção à guerra seja ela inspirativa para Virginia em seu romance de 1923, explicita em um herói de 1949, ou meramente na metáfora sobre o aidético Richard (Ed Harris).

É notório que o tema central da história é a identidade das personagens, e isso é acentuado no filme quando somos colocados diante da questão sexual de cada uma delas, parece que a atração pelo mesmo sexo é mais um ponto comum entre as três, além do sofrimento causado não apenas por isso. São pessoas aprisionadas em vidas que não lhes pertencem. É agradável ver como atitudes diferentes em relação ao sofrimento ou algo comum, pode resultar em finais distintos, e que para isso basta apenas um pouco de reflexão.

O título nomeia bem uma trama que é contada em horas e instantes, sejam eles causadores ou decisivos de tudo que gira em torno das escolhas disponíveis a cada um. São de momentos cruciais que nós somos levados acima ou abaixo, como resultados dessas escolhas. Se formos notar dias inteiros não medem um único sentimento, horas sim, elas são mais precisas, é através delas a forma mais correta de se medir a vida. Recomendo a todos esse belo filme, e os livros também (As Horas e Mrs.Dalloway).

Por tercera vez Michael Bay viene a engrosar esta sección (tras la infumable Pearl Harbor y la estrepitosamente fallida La isla) con un nuevo despropósito orgiástico de chapa, cristal y pintura hechos añicos para disfrute del personal, puro escaparatismo pirotécnico que envuelve una historia tan gratuita como absurda a la medida del más rancio y conservador patrioterismo de una sociedad esquizofrénica como la norteamericana y con los consabidos “héroes” de cartón piedra que son tan de gusto de Bay como protagonistas absolutos de un pestiño que los seguidores del cine de acción no vacilan en calificar de “obra maestra” (no reírse, que lo dicen en serio).

Revestida, una vez más, de la épica de andar por casa que imprimen Bay y el productor Jerry Bruckheimer a todas sus historias, nos encontramos con una narración sonrojante, no sólo por la, una vez más, histriónica, histérica, autoparódica, ridícula y peripatética interpretación de Nicolas Cage, sino por las incongruencias y tonterías que el guión va soltando aquí y allá sin orden ni concierto y sin que se moleste en ocultar el plagio argumental de Harry, el ejecutor (The enforcer, 1976), película de James Fargo en la que Clint Eastwood y su compañera se enfrentan a un grupo terrorista que amenaza a la ciudad de San Francisco. Nos encontramos con un prólogo típico “de soldaditos”: el coronel Hummel (Ed Harris, probablemente el mejor actor norteamericano vivo en su personaje más incomprensible, más lamentable, más horripilante, pero Dios, ¿cómo es posible que cayera aquí?) es un veterano de los Marines, múltiples veces condecorado, Estrella de Plata, Medalla del Congreso, etiqueta de anís del Mono…, que, no obstante, se encuentra resentido con el maltrato que los politicos y burócratas infligen a los veteranos de guerra que no disfrutan de su grado militar y, sobre todo, hacia la memoria, el recuerdo y las compensaciones económicas a los familiares de quienes perdieron la vida en misiones militares, muchas de ellas ilegales, al servicio del imperialismo norteamericano derrocando gobiernos o apoyando golpes de Estado. Así que al bueno de Hummel y otros patriotas de su mismo cuerpo se les ocurre una genial idea para protestar y hacer que el Gobierno tome conciencia de tan tremenda injusticia: ¿una huelga de hambre? ¿Una manifestación? ¿La denuncia en los medios de comunicación? ¿Un calendario todos en bolas? Nooorl. Nada menos que el robo, el secuestro y el chantaje.

Así las cosas, un grupito de marines mentalizados todos, oficiales y soldados, de la necesidad de hacer justicia a sus camaradas desaparecidos, asaltan una base militar americana (vigilada por lo que parece ser un grupo de boy-scouts incompetentes y torpes, hay que ver cómo vigilan las bases en América, para echarse a temblar) y roban dieciséis (no uno ni dos) misiles cuyas cabezas están dotadas de un gas letal, venenosísimo y fosforescente que viaja en pelotas de cristal hiperfrágil. Pero ojo, como son soldaditos leales a sus camaradas, sólo hieren a los guardias, dejándoles dormidos con dardos cargados de un potente somnífero. Eso sí, la vida de los civiles se la trae floja, porque amenazan al Gobierno con disparar los misiles sobre la ciudad de San Francisco si no aceptan sus demandas una vez que se establecen en la antigua prisión de Alcatraz y secuestran al grupo de visitantes que a esa hora hace el recorrido guiado por esa antigua prisión española. Eso es el prólogo, y de él pueden sacarse dos conclusiones que rayan el absurdo: en primer lugar, el hecho de que no elminen a los guardias en el asalto pero que no les importe intoxicar y matar a toda la ciudad de San Francisco, militares incluidos, algunos de ellos los mismos a los que acaban de salvar, y en segundo, el detallito consistente en que los militares no utilizan sus uniformes reglamentarios, sino que los sustituyen por un sucedáneo de centro comercial; la importancia de esta nimiedad es extrema, dado que responde al tacto de cierto cine de Hollywood (y de ciertos Gobiernos) a la hora de hacer ficción con las sediciones, golpes de Estado ficticios y demás, sobre todo si los asesinos y terroristas visten uniforme americano. Las películas que recogen este tipo de historias han de pasar controles muy férreos de guión y producción para ser vistas con buenos ojos, y de ahí que la trama tome las derivas que toma.

El caso es que a las autoridades no se les ocurre otra cosa que asaltar la prisión para rescatar a los rehenes y eliminar la amenaza de los misiles. Para ello, escogen un grupo de comandos de lo más experto (exterminado a la primera ocasión, no es de extrañar que las cosas vayan como van en Iraq o Afganistán) y a dos asesores cuyo concurso es imprescindible para el éxito de la misión: un especialista en armamento biológico (Cage) que pueda desactivar los chismes, y el único (que insulto a la desmemoria del cinéfilo, que sabe perfectamente que han sido varios los fugados de Alcatraz, cinematográficamente hablando) fugado de la prisión que (nuevo absurdo), a pesar de haber vivido allí recluido en su celda y de haber transitado una única vez por los lugares que atravesó para salir de ella al mar, se conoce la edificación como si la hubiera diseñado él mismo. Quiere la cosa que el preso sea un antiguo agente secreto británico (Sean Connery) enemistado con el director del F.B.I. y que accede a ayudar porque su hija vive, mira tú qué casualidad, en San Francisco y es una víctima potencial de la amenaza.

Y a partir de ahí, ¿qué? Pues eso, incongruencias argumentales de primera clase, testosterona a chorros, acción, persecuciones (muy bien rodadas, eso sí), tiros, diálogos fatuos y grandilocuentes, música apabullante, militarismo de cartón, épica de baratillo, una ironía de parvulario en ciertos diálogos y mujeres reducidas al papel de florero (la novia de Cage, que se plantifica también en San Francisco, embarazada y deseando que su chico la pida en matrimonio) o de tópico (la hija desasistida de Connery, el cual espera recuperar el tiempo perdido junto a ella). Es decir, más espectacularidad vacía en la que la deriva de la trama tiene que reconduciirse hacia el patrioterismo chufletero y por lo tanto el papel de villano termina recayendo sobre dos subalternos, dos cabezas de turco indignos de llamarse Marines, rescatándose en última instancia la memoria de los héroes para el honor y la patria, haciendo inútil, absurdo, estúpido, todo lo anterior que hemos visto y convirtiendo al delincuente y asesino potencial en honorable víctima de la corrupción política. Un asco aderezado con los habituales tics de Bay, sobre todo esas escenas ridículas de ese héroe incorporándose a cámara lenta mirando hacia el horizonte mientras a sus espaldas encontramos un paisaje de desolación… Estupidez supina ante la que hay que dejarse llevar sin hacerse preguntas. Lo contrario nos expone al riesgo de un cortocircuito cerebral severo.

Agravantes: Cage, beattlemaníaco en la cinta, para más señas, está más odioso que nunca
Atenuantes: la escena de persecución está bien, entretenida y ocurrente; sólo tiene una pega: que argumentalmente es absurda

PREDICTOR (JUAN MCTIERNO, 1987).

1- MÁS RIPOFFS COPIOTAS: Jaime Camarón pirateado.

Algo que todos los niños hemos aprendido gracias a estos arti-culos enladrillados sobre la saga de Alien es que en el mundo del cine sólo hay un tío que va un día y hace algo bueno, y que luego todos los demás hacen otra vez la misma película con otro nombre y cobrando ellos. A esto como ya sabemos lo llamamos ripoffff que es como tirarse un pedo de esos que huelen a gato muerto, nombre muy apropiado teniendo en cuenta que absolutamente todas las imitaciones que se hacen suelen ser putas mierdas.

¿Todas? ¡No! A veces surge una imitación que resulta que está muy biem y que acaba trascendiendo la etiqueta de ripoff copiota para alzarse como película bonica por derecho propio. Tal es el caso del flim que encabeza el titulo de este nuevo capítulo del ladrillaco, pelicula que analizaré sin vaselina más adelante. Pero ahora voy a centrarme en todos los demás cagarros que emergieron a raíz del exitazo de la secuela “INMIGRANTESS DE MIERDA, ONEMORETIME” de nuestro amado votante del PP Jaime Camarón.

Realmente fueron (y siguen siendo) infinitos los pajeros que copian la peli de Camarón hasta la puta demencia.

Una de las primeras (en 1986, el mismito año que el estreno de la de Jaime Camarón, ahí aporvechando el fuelle a saco sin contemplaciones) fue “EL INMIGRANTE VIOLADOR” –no, no que vuela… a ver si leemos bien: que VIOLA- (kaka “LA MUETE QUETEATACA” kaka “BRIDERS”) que va de un halieno que viene a la tierra para follarse a todas las vírgenes que encuentra. (Y es que como bien dice mi amigo el “Pelao”, los extranjeros no vienen na más que pa quitarnos a las pibas y el trabajo, por eso es bueno pegarles y también matarles pero sin que nadie se entere. ¡Ti!). El caso es que este inmigrante de la peli no parece que esté muy interesado en el tema del trabajo… El póster de la peli era muy graciozo porque salía una tía con un chumino en tó la cara, mirazlo:

Tras el exitazo en 1986, los niños de Camarón se juntaron todos y sacaron una peliculita al año siguiente, en 1987, donde el grupo de marines se había pasado al lado oscuro (o sea que llevaban sin bañarse un año) y además les gustaba muchísimo de hacerse infusiones con compresas usadas. Efeztibamente y no, se habían trasnformado en BAMPIROSH!!!!!!!!!!!! La peli se entituló “LOS PAJEROS DE POR LAS NOCHES” y salen: Jazson que ahora es como Jazson pero en malote de verdaz, la Bástez que seguía siendo machurra pero llevaba pelucón de Madonna y Bichof que ahora era el jefe de los chupapijas y había sido un vaquero vampiro o no se qué puta mierda. La peli, para postre, imitaba a cascoporro a “ACABATOR” resutando en una mezlca extrañuza entre la peli del Chuache robox y la de “INMIGRANTES DE MIERDA ONEMORETIME”. A pesar de tó, y aunque no es que sea para meterse un dedo en el culo (ni dos), (ni tres), (ni cuatro), (ni cinco no porque ya entonces en un auto-fistfucking) la peli tenía muncias cosas bonicas y es la primera que presentó vampiros guarros y punkarras hijos de puta (hasta ahora habían sido todos putos condes pijos de mierda repeinaos y religiosos). A estos se las sudaba el requesón que les enseñases una cruz, y le daban al JB y al tabaco lo mismito que al sorbo de hemoglobina. Fueron inspiración directa para el personaje vampiro más genial jamás creado: Sean Cassidy del comiz de “PREDICADORL”, y también inspiraron algún capítulo de BAZOFY jamelga cazabanpiroz.

También en 1987 a MEL(acomes) BRUCS (salud) se le ocurre otra de sus ideas geñales: hacer una peli que sea un ripoff copiota de un montón de pelis anteriores, pero hace como que es de risa para que no parezca que tiene mucho morro. A veces es de risa y a veces es del nivel de un episodio de Omaíta pero en general la peli que sacó ripoffeando a pelis de esziencia-ficsión “ESPEISPELOTAS” es de las mejores, o sea, de las que si que hacen risa. Concreta de bakalao mente hay una escena que homenajea la primera de “INMIGRANTE” de Ridelio Escroto con el mismisimo aztor JUAN JURT en la cuala tiene de nuevo a su bebesito en un mcdonalds, el cual esta vez tiene inquietudes similares a Concha Medasco y se pone a bailar y cantar como en un musical de Nacho Cano (ojalá-te-salga-cáncer-de-ano, joder).

En 1988 sale un ripoff copiota que verdaderamente es mucho más que eso, resultando en una cosita que a mi me gustó muncio y que está muy bien hecha. Los efeztos speshpeshiales son una hobra de harte hecha por ESTANISLAO GÜÍNSTONS que tras haber fabricado a los halienos para Camarón y ver que le salían bien, se decidió a dirigir su propia peliculita con un haliensito de protagonista llamado PUNQUINJEZ (cabeza-pepino) el cual era en realidaz LANAS JENRICSEN, el aztor que había hecho del robox Bichof. Cuando se cabrea muncio se transforma en este Punquinkez y mata a tó dios. Os la recomiendo, es muy buena (va en serio cabrones). En nuestro país de gañanes la entitularon PAZTO DE SANGRES.

Más mierdas: a algunos copiones se les ocurre que para que no se note que es una copia, en vez de situar la historia de INMIGRANTES en el espacio, pues la ambientan bajo el agua.

Sí, ya sé que es pa cojerles y no sé qué hacerles, pero reprimid vuestra violencia para cuando vayáis luego a pagar fantas a la zorra que os mola y centraos en el presente, por favor, gracias. Hay un dato MUY IMPORTANTE aquí. Y es que estos hijos de puta estaba MEZCLANDO 2 PELIS DISTINTAS DE JAIME CAMARÓN en UNA SOLA!

Y es que no se puede culpar a los copiotas, porque el primer copiota fue el mismísimo JAIME que se copió a si mismo Y VOLVIÓ A HACER “INMIGRANTESS” bajo el océano pacífico. La peli se entituló “EL ABIZMO. Los protas eran EZ JARRIS y MARIAELISABEZMASTRANTONIO que aparte de tener un nombre que merece que le den de ostias a sus padres, estaba más buena que el pan bimbo sin corteza. Aquí los halienos no eran malos, sino que eran blanduzcos y querían advertir a la jumanidaz que así vamos mal y que no tiremos colillas encendidas por la terraza y mierdas asín… pero toda la jodida ambientación y la fotogradía, tios, era calcada a “INMIGRANTESS” y además salía MIGUEL BIEN (el Quepo Jics que se enamoraba de la Riply) que ahora era un marine psicótico y con bigotito.

A pesar de ser un copiota de si mismo, lo cual es francamente triste y repugnante, a mi es una peli que siempre me ha bustado muncio, pero es porque yo también soy francamente triste y repugnante.

De modo güei que los niños sin talento fundieron ABYSSSSSS e INMIGRANTESSSSS de Camarón y brotaron pedazos de cachos de trozos de caca como:

OJETE PROFUNDO SEIS en el mismo año 1989:

LESBIATÁN, EL DEMOÑO DEL LESBIANISMO también de 1989:

Ésta última tenía como potra-gonista a PEDO GÜELES que era el aztor que había hecho de ROVOCOZ. También salía un pedazo de pibón de la ostia fina, miraz en el poster y veréis acercándoos un huevo que está muy chiquitico que sale una chavala con un pedazo de culo de cortar la digestión. Bueno, pues no está falseado, la propietaria de ése ojete es AMANDAR PAJOTES (Amanda Pays), y aquí tenéis unas muestras de lo buenaca que está para que os podáis desahogar tal como su propio nombre ordena:

Aquí un doctor que claramente tiene una pedazo de erección que le hace arrugar el entrecejo de dolorcito y esfuerzo por la contención:

Y finalmente unas fotitos de su cara para que os imaginéis que culmináis vuestro trabajo manual como en la filmogradía de las películas entre la “W” y la “Y”:

Otra de estas mierdas tipo “halienos en el mar” fue “ALIEN DEGLI ABISSI”, kaka “HALIENO FROM THE DIP” kaka “EL INMIGRANTE DE MIERDA DEL ABISMO”, que emergió del mar como troncho de caca el año 1990.  Ni qué decir tiene que era de marca espagueti y que los protagonistas cuando hablaban hacían tuatos con la mano y los balanceaban adelante y atrás, como si eso diera mayor expresividad a sus palabras.

El final de esta peli incluía a un halieno gigante de color negro con pinzas de cangrejo y cabeza de R2-D2 que los buenos matan con un lazallamas y una excavadora, imitando la lucha final entre Riply-MaikelLlacson y la Reina Haliena Puta.

Es maliísima de cojones. Sí, la he visto. Sí, en fast forward. Sí, tengo micropene.

Pero posiblemente no tan mala como el nuevo regüeldo que viene a continuación. Resulta que en a principios de los años 90 había muncios rumores sobre que Jaimito estaba rodando la selacuela de “EL ACABADOR” y los copiotas más espabilaos no se hicieron de rogar. Mezclaron otra vez 2 películas distintas de Jaime y el resultado fueron flipantes basuras como:

1990, “EL ACABADOR 2 FALSO” kaka “ALIENATORS (con 2 cojones)” kaka “CHOQUIN DARC”.

Efeztibamente y sí!!!!! Se trata de la segunda parte de “El Acabador” hecha antes que la oficial de Jaime Camarón. Si habéis leido las entregas anteriores de este ladrillaco, como todos podréis recordar (a no ser que ahora mismo estéis muy fumaos, o seáis una carpa, o seáis gilipollas, o las tres cosas same time) esto ya había ocurrido con la peli de Ridelio Escrito en Tanolandia. Pero esta selacuela pirata no está hecha en Italia, sino en los Estados Juntitos por Bruno (no, no el gran Dios Brüno, otro gelipuella) Mattei y va de: un HALIENO muy malo viene y mata mucho. RIPLY se hace amiga de una niña-puta llamada NUT. Los MARINES van a matar al Halieno pero mueren todos porque no se repliegan por escuadras…. (hasta aquí, todo obvio que tiene más que ver con INMIGRANTESS que con ACABADOR… hasta que…) TACHAN! Un marine decide que la única manera de acabar con el moztro es convertirse en un ACABADOR. Y va y lo mata.

En 1995 –sorpresas con rima para tu desagüe- aparece otra preciosidad del séztimo harte denominada “ALIEN TERMINATOR”… increíble lo que se han currado el título. Es una mezcla de 2 pelis de Jaime Camarón que voy a dejar que adivinéis vosotros solos porque no os lo voy a dejar yo todo en bandeja, y demás ya estoy viendo que empezáis a hacer mayores y estoy hasta los cojones ya de manteneros a ver si os buscáis un trabajo hijos de puta y dejáis ya de vivir en mi casa comiéndoos mi comida y encima sin traer un duro. Copón.

Luego aunque estas que vienen a continuación realmente no se inspiraron en INMIGRANTESS sino tan sólo en EL ACABADOR, pero creo que así y todo por estar basadas en la obra de Camarón pueden ser intelectualmente interesantes. Son esta de 1985:

“INMIGRATESS DE MIERDA ONEMORETIME” siguió produciendo ripoffs copiotas no sólo en los años posteriores a su existencia, sino que acojonantemente siguen apareciendo hasta hoy en día. La mayoría de los estúpidos teens de nuestro mundo aztual no han visto “INMIGRANTESS” de Camarón porque ellos nunca ven pelis hechas antes de que nacieran porque es cutre. En su mente llena de tontunas, las pelis hechas en el momento presente son buenas. Y además Tokyo Hotel tienen talento. El caso es que han debido de tragarse como 300 peliculas que eran nada menos que copias de la peli de Camarón mientras que la buena no la han visto por algun motivo de esos raros suyos. Los teens me dan asco, un día los voy a matar a todos y me las voy a follar a todas. ¿Lo he dicho bien? Si, creo que si. Un ejemplo de mierda copiota del año 1997:

The untold world of a salesman sure is funny.

A group of real estate salesmen (Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Ed Harris and Alan Arkin) in Chicago vie for the best “leads” at a small firm selling property in resort areas such as Florida and Arizona. When a hot shot executive (Alec Baldwin) from the head office arrives and proposes a vicious sales contest (the winner gets a Cadillac, the loser gets fired), competition gets stiff, and the veteran salesmen suddenly find their jobs in jeopardy.

The film is adapted from a play back in 1982 when times were good, now the times are tough and it creates a great piece for this story.

This is surely a movie for people who love dialogue filled movies. The screenplay is the best I have ever heard in my life and it’ so funny but yet so true. These real estate salespersons are so broke they try their hardest to save their jobs and make a deal, but yet they still find ways to make hilarity when their in this time.

Now the screenplay couldn’t have been too great without the actors delivering them. The ensemble cast does an amazing job in this film its really hard to say who does the best, since they are all so equal. Lemmon you fell bad for, Pacino is the funny guy at the office who doesn’t take crap, Ed Harris and Alan Arkin are the two buddies who always discuss real estate, and Kevin Spacey plays the boss who is a square and gets made fun of a lot. Alec Baldwin also has an amazing scene where he is just so nasty that it’s really funny.

Though the story was well-acted and had a very witty and well-written screenplay the story itself didn’t really grasp me. I felt myself bored at points, and I thought that the movie didn’t do much to keep the story interesting.

Consensus: Great script and a well-acted ensemble, features a great dialogue filled movie that shows the real life of desperate salesman’s.

Two cowboys fighting for the pride and Rene Zelweggars love. OK sure!!!

When two gunmen, Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, arrive in Appaloosa they find a small, dusty and lawless town suffering at the hands of renegade rancher Randall Bragg. Bragg has not only taken supplies, horses, and women for his own, but also has left the city marshal and a deputy for dead. It is now up to Cole and Hitch to stand against the actions of the renegade rancher, which have already taken their toll on the town.

Ed Harris directs this western after 8 years of his last job in Pollock, in which he also starred in.That one about an artist, this one about cowboys.

This film does not add to the western genre like I thought it would. The pace at times is incredibly slow and I felt myself yawning at times, and I don’t normally do that. The editing job was sometimes very missed mashed around and I wish they had some sense of a pace for the story and at least put in more shooting scenes to make the film more interesting. Also the lineup of stars are very talented but I didn’t like how some of them were used. Renee Zelweggar’s character is not very an appealing in the sights and in the mind she’s pretty snobby and also not very smart, but then I forget were in the western times.  Jeremy Irons who plays the main villain in this film could’ve been more effective if used more. Irons is a great actor and can prove to be a good guy or a bad guy very easily and he doesn’t get that chance at all. Though the time he had on the screen he too advantage of and did pretty good.

Though despite these bad things the film does have some good elements to it as well. The setting looks exactly like the western times, During the whole movie I actually felt like I was in the west with them. The dialogue is very clever with its undramatic use of humor mixed with a little bit of drama but doesn’t go over the dramatic meter.

Most of the praise comes from the underling chemistry that is between Harris and Mortensen. Harris is aging but still has the ability to apprehend the law when needed to, and Mortensen is also great as the right-hand man who is very soft-spoken but when needed to, he gets the job done. Also a noteworthy performance from Jeremy Irons when he is on.

This film for people who don’t like Westerns may not really find this the most appealing but it still does have good features though it doesn’t add on.

It was April,1970 and( old guy reference here) I was completing my sophomore year at Rockingham Community College in the small town of Wentworth , NC . I didn’t really follow the news much, what with college and work occupying most of my time. perhaps that is why I remember very little about the ill fated lunar mission of Apollo 13.

A mission that could have been called NASA’s most spectacular failure became one of its finest moments. Thanks to Tom Hanks and a host of others we remember it perhaps as much as if not more than any other manned space flight.

I happened to see the final 30 minutes of the  movie on television today and was a bit strangely affected by it. Knowing full well what and how things would transpire. I was rather overcome by emotion at several points in the movie. The use of actual events, news reports by Walter Cronkite and Jules  Bergman seemed to heighten the impact.

The emotions of the various characters had a big effect today as  I watched. James Lovell’s wife and children as  well as his mom being calmed by Wally Schirra and Neil Armstrong, the nail biting tension in Houston as well as on the spacecraft’ it came across very vividly today. And it seemed to be greater than at times past. I loved the calmness of  Gary Sinise(aka Ken Mattingly and our friend Lieutenant Dan ) and the  never say die attitude of flight director Gene Kranz as played by Ed  Harris. And there is our favorite FBI guy from NCIS, one Tobias Fornel.

The photography, i/e/ the heat shield a sit flamed on re-entry, splashdwon etc. Who can forget, “Houston, we have  a problem.”

For me, perhaps the most memorable scene was the almost interminable wait for re-entry, as the magic 3  minute came and went and then with a burst of static, they’re back. The eruption of emotion in the control room was one of my favorite movie scenes, almost rivaling the end of Homeward Bound 1. You  dog lovers remember. The screen is empty for what seemed like  an eternity and then the old heroic golden retriever, Shadow, limps painfully home. I have seen that countless times and never without emotion.

Ahh, if we could just figure out with some degree of accuracy why movies move us. But then it wouldn’t be quite  as moving would it?

Para homenajear a mi mamá en su día, estuve buscando varias pelis lindas que representaran el verdadero amor de una madre, y me costó, pero algunos amigos me recomendaron “Quedate a mi lado”. Stepmom, el título original del inglés, es una comedia dramática centrada en una madre de dos hijos y divorciada de su marido hace un buen tiempo. El padre está conviviendo con una novia fotógrafa, y ya es difícil para la señora tener que compartira sus hijos con esta joven. Cuando parece que las cosas no podrían ir peor, se le diagnostica un cáncer. A partir de allí todos tendrán que aprender a convivir con la enfermedad hasta el final.

Un reparto increíble encabezado por Susan Sarandon, Julia Roberts y Ed Harris te obligará a sacar el pañuelo más de una vez, hasta quebrarte del todo. Especial para aquellos que han perdido a un ser querido, y también siempre útil para apreciar lo que tenemos mientras Dios nos de la posibilidad de disfrutarlo.

Como bonus track, para todos los que aman la acción y el drama, no quiero dejar de rescatar “Plan de Vuelo”, un thriller que por primera vez me forzó a ir al cine con una sola pregunta: ¿Dónde está la nena? Jodie Foster encarna a una madre que acaba de perder a su esposo, y en un avión pierde de vista a su única hija. Convencida de que la nena está a bordo, hace todo lo posible para encontrarla, pese a la falta de cooperación de los tripulantes.  Desde el pánico hasta la locura, pasando por la desesperación y el miedo, Plan de Vuelo se atrapante, y no posee desperdicios.

Comme j’adore le mois d’Octobre, l’Halloween et les films d’horreur, j’ai décidé de faire le premier Horreur-o-thon des Bipolaires! En effet, j’écouterai un film de peur par jour jusqu’au 31, alors revenez lire mes critiques quotidiennes…si vous en avez le courage! MOUAHAHAHAAA!

L’anthologie d’horreur (et les films d’anthologie, point) sont rares ces derniers temps.  Par contre, dans les années 80, Tale from the Crypt, Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents et bien sûr, Creepshow étaient la grande mode.  Dans une atmosphère comic-bookesque, plusieurs courtes histoires macabres, mais amusantes étaient présentées au grand délice des spectateurs (et de moi).  En effet, réalisé par George Romero et écrit par Stephen King, Creepshow confirme son slogan “The most fun you’ll have being scared!”.  5 récits à la fois horrifiants (mais légers), gore (mais pas de façon réaliste) s’enchaînent l’un après l’autre, comme dans les bandes dessinées de l’époque.  De plus, de courtes séquences d’animation font transition entre chaque histoire afin de rehausser cet aspect coloré et nostalgique.

1- Father’s Day: une vieille femme ayant tué son père tyrannique va se recueillir à sa tombe avec sa famille le jour de la Fête des Pères.  Mais malchance! Le père revient des morts pour se venger et enfin avoir son gâteau de fête.  Cette histoire donne bien le ton au reste du film et l’atmosphère exaltante est déja bien installée. A voir: Ed Harris avec des cheveux, qui danse sur du disco.

2- The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verill: Stephen King en personne joue un fermier redneck qui touche à une météorite et se retrouve exponentiellement couvert de plantes étranges.  Bof, ça ne fait pas vraiment peur, Stephen King joue trop exagéré et je m’attendais à un twist à la fin.  Par contre, j’ai aimé les aperçus de l’esprit simplet de Jordy. “You nunkhead!”

3- Something to Tide You Over: Ted Danson et sa blonde se font enterrer jusqu’au cou sur une plage par Leslie Nielsen (Lt. Frank Drebin!).  En effet, Ted Danson lui a volé la dite blonde et le punit en le faisant noyer à petit feu (si ça se peut).  Par contre, c’est le couple qui reviendra se venger.  La meilleure histoire.  Nielsen et Danson sont sérieux pour faire changement!

4- The Crate: Un concierge et un professeur d’université trouvent une vieille caisse datant de 1847.  Curieux, ils l’ouvrent et en sort une bête affreuse qui dévore les gens.  Pendant ce temps, un autre professeur est marié à une bitch tyrannique qu’il rêve de tuer.  Très bon, mais je m’attendais à un twist encore…

5-  They’re Creeping Up on You: Un dirigeant d’entreprise tyrannique (vous voyez une constante?) s’affole alors que son appartement impeccable est de plus en plus infesté de coquerelles.  Assez moyen, mais les coquerelles ça fait peur alors…

Bref, allez voir ce film (malgré l’horrible transfer du DVD)!  Vous aimerez au moins une des histoires, j’en suis sûr.

Saviez-vous que…?: Le cendrier de métal de “Father’s Day” apparaît dans chaque histoire apparemment.

What lurks in the back of our heads? What feasts on our fears and desires? How much of that is exactly real and how much is a product of our imaginations?

Director Ron Howard delivers us deep into the mind of a reluctant genius as he verges on the breakthrough of a lifetime. John Nash (Russell Crowe) was a mathematician, who brought us revolutionary economic theory that changed the face of economics for all time. John Nash was also schizophrenic and insane.

The true life and story of John Nash takes us back to his early Princeton days through his trying relationship with his wife (Jennifer Connelly) and eventually uncovering his hidden secret buried deep within his mind.

Director Ron Howard cleverly weaves the tale so that we don’t know when Nash actually cracks and when his schizophrenia comes to the surface.

This element is what makes Beautiful Mind so intriguing to watch. The idea of that we know this person is having problems but until it’s fully diagnosed we believe what he believes. We also never know when that part of his life actually does become fully absorbed into the mental disorder.

Howard’s illusions and misleading sidebars are helped a lot by the incredible performance by Russell Crowe’s John Nash. It’s literally incredible watching this actor rebuild himself as a shallow recluse who believes people don’t like him so he always stays in the background.

Then watching Crowe evolve this silently disturbed man into an older man dealing with his demons is such an inspiration. That is purely the reason I think there is so much passion in Crowe and Howard’s direction. This is supposed to be an inspiration to us all.

I was also very impressed with the supporting performance by Jennifer Connelly. She has come a long way since her debut in the John Hughes comedy Career Opportunities. Does this woman ever age? She has the same beauty and screen presence she displayed back then and in The Rocketeer, her other notable leading performance.

Howard also reunites with Ed Harris who delivers a good performance as a G-man spook but his role is very limited so it isn’t showcased very much.

Look its a bird! Its a plane! Oh, forget it!

Hands down Beautiful Mind is the best film Howard has done since Apollo 13 and probably the 2nd best film of the veteran filmmaker’s career. It’s that good.

This film will probably deliver Crowe his third Oscar nod and possibly Howard a best director and best picture. What would be a surprise is seeing Harris nominated in the supporting category. Harris is a veteran actor who is always brilliant but no awards ever seem to acknowledge the man.

A harrowing and remarkable play, excellently written, performed and produced. There is nothing I can fault about this seamless and intelligent production, an absolutely brilliant and professional piece that deserves the highest of accolades.

I had the pleasure of seeing Squaremoon Ltd.’s Total in the Old Police Cells last year, so I knew what to expect when being dragged down into Brighton Town Hall’s dungeon: a small, intimate space, crammed full of old benches and gloom. Squaremoon did not try and tart up the room, but left it in its squalid splendour, which was the perfect setting for this dark and powerful play.
