As they’re playing, Stan’s father walks in, asks, “You kids want to see something really cool?” and starts to play an electric guitar.
For a moment, the room is dead silent. Then, Stan asks, incredulously, “Dad, what are you doing?”
“I can actually play a lot of these songs on a real guitar,” the father responds. “Want me to show you boys how?”
Stan spits back, “That’s stupid, Dad.”
Well, maybe not, say guitar teachers. In fact, the immense popularity of the hit Guitar Hero franchise–the third iteration of the game, Guitar Hero III, brought in $115 million during its first week on the market–may be the best thing that has happened to the instrument, to rock ‘n’ roll, and to guitar instructors, in a long time.
“I have an overwhelming feeling that my business is safe for years to come when I see kids playing Guitar Hero,” said Dan Emery, owner of New York City Guitar School. “These kids are really enjoying playing Guitar Hero, and they’re really being turned on to old classic rock” via the game.
Emery said he actually sees Guitar Hero as perhaps the best recruitment tool his school could have asked for.

Credit: South Park Studios
In the South Park episode “Queer-o,”
Stan and Kyle entertain their friends
by playing Guitar Hero.
“I fully expect that (kids who play the game) will get into their twenties and they will have disposable income and they will decide to actually play guitar and they’re going to call us up,” he said.
Exact numbers of Guitar Hero-fueled converts to the real thing (kids or adults) are hard to come by. But something at work here clearly could be the most powerful advertisement for the guitar since the hit Richard Linklater movie School of Rock.
In that film, Jack Black plays a teacher who, through sheer passion for music, turns a class of rock-illiterate elementary school students into a head-bobbing rock band. After the movie came out, San Francisco guitar teacher Jay Skyler said his roster of young students exploded overnight.
“All of a sudden, I had 9-year-old students,” Skyler said, “because all of a sudden, everyone wanted a guitar.”
But now, with Guitar Hero turning into one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, Skyler said it’s not just kids who seem interested in playing the real instrument.
While some of his new adult students may not be willing to admit that the game drove them to him, he did suggest a definite cause and effect.
“My adult students, they don’t want to cop to it,” Skyler said of being Guitar Hero fans, “but they’re all, ‘Have you played the game?’”
The immense popularity of Guitar Hero does worry some of Skyler’s fellow guitar teachers, who fret that the game may deter kids from being interested in picking up the real instrument. But Skyler doesn’t share that concern, instead feeling that the long-term outcome will be positive.
“Basically, it’s getting more kids into guitar,” Skyler said. “So if you’re a guitar teacher, or a band, you have to love it. They’ll play with the toy for a while, but after awhile, they’ll want the real thing.”

“No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”
- Yoda
How often have we all said “I’ll try” when asked to do something? But the fact is, either you will do it… or you won’t. There really is no “trying” as Yoda has pointed out. Either you will pick up that spoon… or you won’t. Either you will make that phone call… or you won’t. Either you will learn that guitar solo… or you won’t. There is no “in between” which “trying” implies.

We lost a musical Prince last Saturday night Norman Woolsey died on November 7, 2009. He was an abso

We lost a musical Prince last Saturday night

Norman Woolsey died on November 7, 2009. He was an absolute sweetheart of a man, and hands-down the best guitarist that I have ever had the priviledge of playing with.

I’ll never forget the first time that I ever met Norman. We had found each other on one of those musicians’ website, and made arrangements for him to sit in with a few other musicians that I was jamming with. With his thick horn-rimmed glasses, shaggy gray hair, and middle age paunch, he certainly looked like no one’s idea of a guitar hero.

After introducing himself in his soft Texas drawl, I pegged him as a “weekend strummer” – someone who knew some basic chords, and pulled his guitar out from time to time and play songs from back in the day. “Wonderful…” I groused to myself.

We set up and began to play a 12-bar blues as a warm up. I noticed that he was tentatively playing some chords and staying in the background. “I knew it…” I said to myself. The other guitarist ran out of gas after a few minutes, and I shouted to Norman: “Go ahead – let’s see what you got.”

He stomped down on his effect boxes, and his guitar emitted a growl as his fingers slid down the neck. He proceeded to tear through a 5-minute blues solo that would have Stevie Ray Vaughn nodding in approval, followed it with finger-tapping riffs that Eddie Van Halen would have found eminently to his satisfaction, and ending with vigorous applications of the whammy bar that Jimi Hendrix would have wholly approved of.

By the time he finished, there was smoke pouring from his fingertips, and we gaped in disbelief at the sounds that we had just witnessed being created by this nerdy-looking guy with the coke-bottle lenses and the goofy grin.

I had the pleasure and priviledge to play with Norman many times in the last few years. He was always modest about his incredible talent, and always seemed to be surprised when I would tell him that he was the best guitarist that I had ever played with.

Norman Woolsey was a friend of mine, and I will miss him terribly.

“Thanks Norm, it was a real slice of Heaven.”

1981

Warner Bros. Records

Van Halen, one the most influential, popular bands of the ’70’s and ’80’s, has been an on-again, off-again project for who knows how long. Original singer David Lee Roth left in 1984, Sammy Hagar left in 1996, Roth came back briefly for two songs, Gary Cherone came for an album (the worst album ever), had a reunion with Hagar, and now a reunion with Roth again, although bassist Michael Anthony has left. Whew.

This album, back in 1981, marks the beginning of possible problems within the infrastructure of the band. Fair Warning is an album that was recorded during heavy binges of alcohol and cocaine use by Eddie Van Halen. He and Roth apparently were also at odds about the content of the record, the former succeeded in having more seriousness rather than a poppier mood. The album is a lot darker than most Roth-era Van Halen, yet it still possesses a sense of humor that unfortunately is lacking in their later works.

“Mean Street” opens the album with a fade-in of one of Eddie’s complicated guitar tapping lines. The riff than changes to a funk-based rhythm. Roth’s lyrics and vocals dominate with an attitude only hinted at before. He sings of “searching for the latest thing, a break from this routine”, and he continues the line with “I’m talking some new kicks, ones like ain’t never seen” (Ah, remember the times when you could sing the phrase “new kicks” and not be ironic about it?). After a verse or two and the following choruses, the band kicks into an even funkier guitar solo. The required Van Halen break-down is even thrown in. It’s an awesome song to kick the album off.

“”Dirty Movies”" (I feel so stupid typing that, for the song has quotes already) is the second song leading in with Alex’s drums and some slide guitar. The song’s about a Prom Queen turned into a Pornstar, pretty much a normal topic for David Lee Roth and his obsession with pretty girls. The verse sounds have rapped, and Eddie’s slinky riff in the back fits the sleazy mood perfectly.

“Sinner’s Swing!” is the most kick-ass song on the album, probably in the top three kick-ass VH songs ever (followed by “Everybody Wants Some!!” which is just sheer ass-kickitude). The riff is pure hard-rock, and sounds so awesome. The lyrics have a lot of attitude, (“She looks so fuckin’ good, so sexy and so frail”) and Roth even brings a little “My Generation” style vocals into the second verse with some stuttering (the sign of a real bad-ass song). The drop-d tuning of the guitar lends a heaviness to the song that could’ve been offset by the actual catchiness of the chorus (“G-get get get get get out and push!”). The solo is particularly inspired, which isn’t saying much because almost every Van Halen solo is amazing. This gets my vote for best song, which can only be disputed because of the next two.

“Hear About it Later” could be Van Halen’s best arranged and written song. It starts off slow with tasteful single notes outlining chords. Pay attention, as the song progresses, the tempo quickens, which creates a desperate demeanor to the song. The lyrics are decent, somewhat serious for Roth, and he sings them with a conviction not heard on other songs (there’s even a major lack of his quirky yelps, maybe only one or two, if any). The solo also sets the song apart from others. Instead of adding the guitar on top of everything else like normal and keeping the song’s flow intact, the continuity drops out, changing the song to focus on the eclectic guitar which sounds like it doesn’t really know where to go.

The biggest single of Fair Warning is “Unchained”, the fifth song. Again, the drop-d tuning accentuates the poppiness while also grounding the song. The riff during the verses serves almost as a bass, with the guitar playing on the lower strings. The lyrics are completely nonsensical (“Thought you’d never miss me ’till I got a fat-city address”? What the hell does that mean?), but by now, Roth has earned it and it just sounds cool coming from him anyway. I think he even knows it is as the breakdown borders on self-parody. Dave has his little “Hey, man, that suit is you! Whoowhee! You’ll get some leg tonight for sure!” crazy half-sung, half-spoken, sexual-innuendo-laden speech, only to be interrupted, “C’mon, Dave, give us a break”.

“Push Comes to Shove” is a laid-back blues. The drums rely heavily on hi-hats, and the bass has a jumpy line to follow, so the song sounds different from other’s in the Van Halen repertoire. Overall, it’s a rather weak song, but it shows the band trying something relatively new, which is very respectable. It’s not a bad song, just doesn’t feel up to par with the rest of the album.

“So this is Love?” starts strangely, with a drop in the volume. However, it kicks back up in time. While not an outstanding song at all, it does show a good arrangement. The verses are refined, content with keeping back, only for the chorus to break forward electrically. It’s a catchy song, good guitar solo, and has crazy Dave vocals at the end. While not pushing any boundaries like others on Fair Warning, it at least serves as a foil for them as it’s the most regular Van Halen song on here.

“Sunday Afternoon in the Park” is a dark, bass and drum heavy instrumental that serves as little more than an intro into “One Foot Out the Door”. “One Foot” is a very short song (even shorter than “Sunday Afternoon” strangely) at 1:56. It’s the darkest song on the album, but it offers little more than being a throwaway. the lyrics are only about leaving one’s lover as her husband is coming home. The song is depressing to end with, solely because it does not reflect the mood of the album at all. Instead it’s one part weird effects, one part bad lyrics, and one part Eddie solo (which is still awesome, no doubt, just doesn’t work as being half the damn song). If they couldn’t have written a better tune in time for the release, the least they could’ve done is throw these two songs halfway through the album to be more cohesive.

In conclusion, Fair Warning shows Van Halen developing their sound and trying new things. While it’s not their best album (Some still say their first album, others say 1984, I particularly like Women and Children First), it has great moments, with some of their best written songs. Needless to say, anyone saying Van Halen was better with Hagar could still be shown this album be told to shut up (if not executed. I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to think such a thing in most states). With the three songs “Sinner’s Swing!”, “Hear About it Later”, and “Unchained” on it, Fair Warning is definitely worth repeated listenings, and will still instill one with the ability to air-guitar on the instant.

*

I still remember the first time I heard Van Halen. I was in grade school, and Mom got a baby-sitter — it was a Friday night. As soon as Mom and Stepdad clear the corner, all the (cute) baby-sitter’s friends (with feathered hair and Goody combs hangin’ out their back pockets) show up to drink our booze, blast our stereo, and even smoke a little somethin’. It was a party, and it was a smokin’ good time — as far as Friday nights for a little kid go.

The Eagles, Jackson Browne, and Bob Seger were usually on heavy rotation at home around that time — but all that changed that night. Some hip Senior brought a copy of Van Halen I, and I was blown away. This was no burner music — these guys were on fire. I heard friggin’ Ice Cream Man for the first time. Right? David Lee Roth on acoustic — did you even know he could play? Well yeah, it was before he became a girl — running around in tights, doing the splits and feeling his ass the whole show. Van Halen started out as a tight band that laid it down hard. No one could touch ‘em. Not even close. Goes without saying — Eddie Van Halen, well, was the guitar god in a world all by himself. There’s been no one like him since. Yep. Old Van Halen is still my guilty pleasure. A little Unchained will get anyone’s blood pumpin’ — or they ain’t alive. Everybody Up!

Busy and uninspired lately, I’ve had nothing I felt I really should or could say. But writing nothing, or waiting for the urge to write, seems unwise. So here’s a little filler for you.

For whatever reason, this song and video came to mind. As a Van Halen fanatic as a kid, I thought this song was one of the best of the Roth era. Actually, it’s gotta be in my top 10 favorite Van Halen songs. The video, though kind of fun for 13 year old boys (and back in the day when the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition was risque), is somewhat embarrassing now. Still, it’s a great song and the video has camp.

Without further ado I give you…”Hot for Teacher”

Anthrax & Public Enemy – Bring The Noise
My personal favourite collaboration, I choses this above Aerosmith/Run DMC because unlike that song the lyrics in this one actually work with the collaboration, The lyrics are about how Hip- Hop should be treated equally to Metal and Rock music, and if this track doesn’t prove it, nothing will. Plus, the Public Enemy original even mentioned anthrax, these bands were meant for each other!

Here is a quick guide we have put together to help you choose your style of electric guitar. Choose

Here is a quick guide we have put together to help you choose your style of electric guitar.

Choose your Body Style…

Les Paul Shape

The Gibson Les Paul shape is among the most recognized solid-body electric guitar designs. It was developed in the early 1950s and has become one of the most enduring and popular musical instrument models in the world. Its design has been left virtually untouched for nearly 50 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Les_Paul

SG Style

In mid 1960, the Gibson Guitar Corporation felt that the Les Paul signature model, introduced in 1952, had run its course, and decided to change the design. This new design, with a slim double-cutaway body featuring prominent scarfing around the edges and cutaways, was officially issued in the 1961 model year as a Les Paul signature model. The main idea was to compete with the double cutaway Fender Stratocaster, which gave players easy access to the higher frets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_sg

Stratocaster

The Stratocaster, often called the ‘Strat’, is a model of electric guitar designed by Leo Fender in the early 1950s. Much of the popularity of the Stratocaster can be attributed to its versatility. The neck, middle, and bridge (in the original manual, labelled “rhythm”, “normal tone”, and “lead”, respectively) pickups provide a wide range of tones. The standard single-coil pickups often found in Stratocasters produce a trebly sound with a high top end and bell-like harmonics.

Telecaster

The Fender Telecaster (aka ‘Tele’) is a dual-pickup, solid-body electric guitar made by Fender. Its simple, yet effective design and revolutionary sound broke ground and set trends in the fields of electric guitar manufacture and popular music. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Telecaster

Choose your Pick Ups…

The Single Coil Pick Up

A single coil is a type of pickup for the electric guitar. As its name indicates, it is composed of copper wire wrapped in a single coil around a single bar magnet or several rod magnets. Single-coil pickups are most commonly associated with Fender guitars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_coil

The Humbucker Pick Up

A humbucker is a type of electric guitar pickup that uses two coils. Humbuckers have increased output, and because the two coils are of reversed polarity and reverse-wound, noise and interference is essentially ‘canceled out’. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humbucker

More Info

How Guitar Pickups Work

Choose your Bridge System…

Stock Tremolo

A tremolo arm, tremolo bar, vibrato bar or whammy bar is a lever attached to the bridge and/or the tailpiece of an electric guitar or archtop guitar to enable the player to quickly vary the tension and sometimes the length of the strings temporarily, changing the pitch to create a vibrato, portamento or pitch bend effect.

Double Locking

The Floyd Rose Double Locking system consists of:

a lock at nut of the guitar, which prevents the tuning (“machine”) heads from being used and holds the strings taut,

a “floating bridge”, where the other ends of the strings are also vise-locked (hence, “double-locking”).

The locking system helps to keep the strings in tune while the strings are slackened to a degree which wasn’t possible with older tremolo systems, such as those found on Fender Stratocaster, allowing “dive bombs” (i.e. rapid lowering of the pitch of a note). Since the tuning heads are ineffectual with the lock in place, the Floyd Rose bridge has heads for fine tuning; the guitar is tuned before the lock is put on, then fine tuned afterwards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floyd_Rose

Hard Tail

Instruments without a Stock tremolo or Double locking bridge system are called hard-tail.

Choose your fret board…

From maple to Rosewood there is no one “best” wood. The choice you make should be based upon your application and personal taste or preference.

Chose your neck joint…

This is the point at which the neck is either bolted or glued to the body of the guitar.

Bolt on Neck

This method is used frequently on solid body electric guitars and is considered the easiest neck joint method. Body and neck cross in horizontal plane and are joined using 4 (rarely 6) screws. As screws damage the wood and could put extra stress on it, typically a rectangular metal plate or a pair of metal plates are used to secure the joint and re-distribute the screw pressure evenly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolt-on_neck

Glue in Necks

Set-in neck is a method of guitar (or similar stringed instrument) construction that involves joining guitar neck and body, pressing it tightly together using some sort of adhesive. This yields better connection of neck and body and makes sound waves. Gibson leads the trend for set-in necks with Gibson Les Paul series, opposing Fender that build guitars traditionally with bolt-on necks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set-in_neck

Through Necks

These are designed so that everything from the machine heads down to the bridge are located on the same piece of wood. The sides (also known as wings) of the guitar are then glued to this central piece. Some luthiers prefer this method of construction as it is said to allow better sustain of each note. Some very high-end instruments may not have a neck joint at all, having the neck and sides built as one piece and the body built around it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neck-thru

1. Robert Johnson

Right let’s get the obvious one out of the way first – want to learn blues – listen to Robert Johnson – period – cited as influence from everyone from Clapton to Page – he is the delta blues – listen to any best of Robert Johnson and you could be forgiven that there are two guitarists playing.

2. BB King

Picking up an Electric Guitar where Robert Johnson left his acoustic – BB King is electric blues personified – once again revered by everyone – distinct tone and sound – a gem!

3. Chuck Berry

Picking up the blues and turning it Pop – classic riffs – a classic “loose” style – You can hear Chuck Berry in everyone from Keith Richards to Radiohead.

4. Scotty Moore

If Elvis was “The King” then Scotty Moore was a prince – completing Elvis’s early line up – Scotty’s country licks echo’d through the next 50 years.

5. Jimmy Page

The first true heavy rock guitarist? Arguably – listen to any Led Zep track and listen to a true rock god.

6. Eddie Van Halen

“Eruption” – need we say more – an influence for over 20 years of speed freek fingerboard tapping axe wielders.

7. Charlie Christian

World renowned jazz guitarist – early adopter of the electric guitar and someone who could hold their own against any horn section he was confronted with

8. Django Reinhardt

Virtuoso jazz player renowned for his gypsy style fingerpicking

9. Steve Jones

Not technically proficient by any means and without a bucket load of albums but this sex pistol guitarist created a whole army of followers in the late 70’s

10. Steve Cropper

Soul maestro – riff meister and writer extraordinaire – Steve Cropper has played with the best from Booker T, Bill Withers and Otis Redding he is Mr Soul Guitar.

Michael Jackson Beat It from the album THRILLER
Released in 1982, the Quincy Jones-produced Thriller refined the strengths of Off the Wall; the dance and rock tracks were more driving, the pop tunes and ballads softer and more soulful, and all of it was recognizably Michael. Jackson brought in Paul McCartney for a duet, guitarist Eddie Van Halen for a jaw-dropping solo, and Vincent Price for a creepy recitation
