Pourtant, I’m All Over It était un single extrêmement prometteur.

01. Belle / Banana Pancakes
02. If I Had Eyes
03. Do You Remember / Remember
04. Sleep Through The Static

Artist: Julian Casablancas

Date: Monday November 23, 2009

Venue: Commadore Ballroom

Julian Casablancas is probably best known for his work with the Strokes. In addition to singing and songwriting with the Strokes he has collaborated with Queens of the Stone Age, Eddie Vedder, Lonely Island, Santogold, N.E.R.D., Albert Hammond, Jr., Pharrell, Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and more. He has recently finished work on his first solo album “Phrazes for the Young“. Casablancas seems to ooze talent out of his pores. His solo album is a solid listen from start to finish creating memorizing guitar riffs and tap your toes beats. He has been quoted as saying that he wants to present a “series of over-the-top Disney style shows“. If that isn’t enough reason to see him check out some of his work below.

The tuning is a bit of a nightmare. Vedder has his uke tuned down about three quarters of a step. If you want to play along with the original, you’ll have to tune your uke to the song itself. The chord names are written up in their standard tuning names to avoid confusion (hopefully)

Eddie Vedder may be off in Chicago, penning songs for films and baseball teams, but he’ll forever be linked to Ten, that must-have disc from Pearl Jam.

The diamond disc from 1991 is getting the deluxe treatment come spring, with four reissues available March 24.

The reissues include a bunch of extras…

- A remaster of the original album + remix by producer Brendan O’Brien
- DVD of previously unreleased 1992 Pearl Jam MTV Unplugged performance
- LP of the band’s 1992 “Drop in the Park” concert
- A replica of Pearl Jam’s three-song demo cassette with Eddie Vedder’s original vocal dubs
- A recreation of Eddie Vedder composition notebook

The re-design of Ten has been geared primarily by bassist Jeff Ament and designer Andy Fischer (who, interestingly enough, helped with the Into the Wild film soundtrack, the disc that featured some brilliant tunes by Eddie Vedder).

“The goal was to assemble the ultimate fan-piece, something Pearl Jam lovers could pore over as they experience an indelible record all over again, in an entirely new way,” commented Fischer.

“The original concept was about really being together as a group and entering into the world of music as a true band…a sort of all-for-one deal,” added Ament. “There were some elements of the original Ten artwork that didn’t turn out the way we had hoped, due to time constraints. With this reissue, we’ve been able to take our time and invest resources into making the design the way we had originally intended.”

Pre-orders of the Super Deluxe Edition begin yesterday through the band’s Ten Club at www.pearljam.com, with all four editions available at retail on March 24, 2009. The reissue of Ten serves as the launch of a planned two-year catalogue re-release campaign leading up to the band’s 20th anniversary in 2011.

It’s a little treat for the Pearl Jam fan in all of us.

Much of the free world gave up on Rolling Stone as a reputable journal of rock ‘n’ roll culture long, long ago, but I’ve kept my faith (and my subscription — it ain’t metal, but somebody always signs me up as a Christmas present). At the very least, they offer up a few insightful artist profiles (Mastodon, Metallica and Megan Fox — ooh la la) and long-form non-fiction pieces (anything about drugs, gangsters, and grown men in costumes) every month.

As good as it gets these days...boobs!

But I’m really losing my patience. The latest issue (Jagger, Springsteen and fucking Bono argh!) exemplifies everything that’s wrong with the aging rag. Inside was a big, bloated, 52-page feature on the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame, including 27 pages on the 25th Anniversary Concerts. Seem excessive? Consider that RS editor, publisher, and founder Jann Wenner is the chairman of the Rock Hall. It was one egregious display of self-gratification, like watching Wenner stare and smile right at me, drool glistening on his lips, as he slowly stroked his cock in my general direction. “Mmm…yeah…aren’t I fucking great? Ooooo yeah…I AM rock ‘n’ roll…”

Mmm...yeah...mmm

This magazine enjoyed the smell of its own shit so much for so long that its collective head is stuck up its ass and in the past, and as such, is entirely out of touch with the rock ‘n’ roll spirit of today. They have the same stale rotation of crusty old farts on the cover every few months, various permutations of The Beatles, The Stones, U2, Dylan, and Springsteen. Springsteen and fucking Bono have each graced the cover 4 times in the past three years (Bono three times in the past year alone). When they find a halfwit, “politically” inclined rocker to latch onto, they sure stand by their man.

Yeah really fresh and edgy in 2009...

The Beatles graced the cover in September, when RS explored, for the hundredth time and about 40 fucking years too late, “Why They Broke Up.” Led Zeppelin, in the past 20 years, have appeared on the cover more often than they’ve appeared in concert. Are there no other, more recent artists, anywhere in the pantheon of rock ‘n’ roll, to give press?

When it’s not one of these old men that we know everything there is to know about them, it’s a Tiger Beat teeny-bopper like Zac Efron or the Jonas Brothers (twice!), some ass-sniffing, messianic portrayal of Barack Obama, or, if I’m really lucky, some tall blondes from Gossip Girl or The Hills.

I know print media in in deep shit. I know. Ad pages are down all across the board, and you have to sell magazines, so they’re pandering to the faux-hippies that have been reading since the ’70s. But when they’re gone, who reads this thing? I don’t know how anybody between 18 and 45 can be bothered to give a shit about this magazine. When Metallica comes across as the most vital, edgy band in the entire issue, something is terribly, terribly wrong.

It’s ironic: This magazine began as a venue to rail against the stuff-ass establishment. Now it is the stuffy-ass establishment, little more than a legacy rag. Epic fail vanflip.

In the spirit of legendary stadiums being torn down, and I know this is a bit odd but I actually had my second experience in the same month (Oct 09) of catching a major rock act paying tribute to a famous venue, before they brought out the wrecking ball the following day to demolish it (previous one being Bruce playing The Giants for the last time on Oct 02, 09).

I had the simple intentions of finally seeing my childhood favorites “Pearl Jam” live in concert for the very first time, only to find out later, that the concert would also commemorate the final night for the famous Spectrum Arena in Philadelphia. After waiting a year, I had to actually go out to Philadelphia on Halloween night to catch the band, since New York was not on their tour schedule. Needless to say, the night was tipped to be a memorable one and the final outcome was nothing less.

The Spectrum which was home to the championship Flyers and Sixers teams, saw its final night on Halloween 2009, after being host to some of the biggest music and sporting events over its 42 year run since opening in 1967. Apart from Pearl Jam having the rear honor of bringing the final curtain call on Philadelphia history, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band also had a 4 night run before them to commemorate a venue which had been host to names such as the Rolling Stones, Prince, Madonna, Frank Sinatra, Charles Barkley and Bobby Clarke.

I think Eddie Vedder (Lead Vocalist Pearl Jam) said it best that night: “I don’t want to say goodbye to this place … I don’t even want to think about it yet … I just want to keep rocking. I tell you, everybody in this band would have wanted to be here for the last night in this building, even if we weren’t playing here. So I understand we have a big job to do. We’re going to have to pace ourselves, because we’re going to be here for a long time.”

And a long time it was. Vedder and the band along with a fanatical crowd of 18,000, determined to honor their historical arena which had earned the title “America’s Showplace,” stayed the course to what turned out to be a rare performance indeed lasting almost 4 hours (over 5 hours with the opening band “Bad Religion”). The crowd got everything they expected and more, with the band churning out a set-list comprising a hit after a hit from their 20 year career. Click below to watch video of Eddie announcing the long concert:

Amongst the many moments that really embodied that night’s farewell spirit, was when Vedder brought out 89 year old stagehand Charlie DiFabio, who had worked at the Spectrum since opening day in 1967. Vedder said to the crowd, that Difabio had been working behind the stage for 42 years, tonight he wanted him to know what it felt to be in front of the crowd in a packed stadium. In a way, DiFabio represented the Spectrum’s life that night, and the crowd recognizing that, aptly gave him a standing ovation that even surpassed that of Pearl Jam.

The day before the last night on Oct 31st, Vedder summed-up the last few days’ sentiments quite aptly when he expressed to the crowd his regrets about letting go of Spectrum: “Why don’t they just save the f-place?” Forty-two years is not that old. I’m 44,” he said, showing off his biceps. Realizing that not even he could save this place from coming down in 2 days he said: “OK, it may be too late to save this place … so lets just f- celebrate it!”

Album: Into The Wild: Music For The Motion Picture

Honestly, I’m probably the wrong person to talk about this album, since I never saw the movie, and thus I have little or no context for how the music fits into the movie. But let’s be real here. It’s solo Eddie Vedder, and does anyone ever need a good reason to post some solo Vedder music? I think not.

Eddie Vedder – Hard Sun [iTunes] (YSI)

==TJ==

PS: For those who called me out on the Across The Universe post, I intend to post my grievances against the film in the near future, I’ve just been busy.

They may not have won a World Series in 100 years, but they can’t take Vedder! No way!

Apparently, Eddie Vedder has penned a rally song for the Chicago Cubs, as they look to end a century-long curse and take the MLB playoffs by storm.

“All the Way,” which Vedder performed last month at a solo show in Chicago, has already popped up in Chicago sports bars and radio stations.

According to Pearl Jam’s website, a download is coming soon.

A few lyrics from “All the Way”…

Our heroes wear pinstripes
Pinstripes in blue
Give us a chance to feel like heroes too

We are one with the Cubs
With the Cubs we’re in love
We are not fair-weather but foul-weather fans

Cubs great Ernie Banks reportedly asked Vedder to write the song.

Best of luck to the Cubs, but really, isn’t it the MARINERS who need a rally song?

Get on that, Eddie Vedder. I’ve got my eye on you.

I’ve had my Bonnaroo highlight, and naturally it involes Robert Plant. As you can imagine, security around this show in particular was tight. One of my Bonnaroo bosses, who has the mother of all access passes, got busted by security trying to climb a fence to get to the primo viewing location at the side of the stage. So I figured my chances were pretty slim. I could hear Krauss/Plant the band take the stage from my little interview trailer and I tried to contain myself. But once I heard the siren strain of Plant’s voice, interviewee be damned! Poor Serena Ryder, I owe you one. Sadly I was foiled when in my attempts to escape a young woman who works with my next subjects, Yonder Mountain String Band, stopped by to give some talking points.

But she turned out to be a fan and my new partner in crime. We set aside our duties and set off to see just how far two short dresses and a couple of day old backstage passes would get us. I am not gonna lie, the short dresses didn’t help, but my ‘don’t take no for an answer’ attitude did. I talked us past 3 security guards and right on to the stage! We were literally THIS FAR from Robert Plant when he and Alison Krauss burst into a mezmerizing verion of Robert’s “In The Mood”.

Ann and I stood stone still as production dudes walked right passed us. Every time someone came near us, we were sure we were gonna get escorted off… we were the only women, the only people not dressed in black, and the only people actually watching the show. Somehow I had talked us onto the side of the stage where the guitar techs and crew guys gather. They could have cared less. One guy was asleep in a hammock. It was amazing and totally enhanced by the fact that it was a bit dastardly. I think Robert Plant would have been proud, and I swear I saw a twinlke in his eye when he looked to our side of the stage.

Maybe he’s just twinkly. I prefer to think he twinkled at me.

P.S. Eddie Vedder joined Jack Johnson on stage last night and sang “Constellation.” That was pretty cool, too!

Strange weekend here at acme eclectic. I hadn’t intended for it to be a book review weekend,

Strange weekend here at acme eclectic. I hadn’t intended for it to be a book review weekend, but sometimes these things just happen.

As an added bonus, I can’t even take credit for this particular recommendation. That actually goes to one Mr. Ed Vedder (courtesy of this post on pearljam.com).

What book is it that spurred Vedder’s interest in passing along the good word to his fans and followers? Not one of the variety that you might think. The book in question is The Old Leather Man: Historical Accounts of a Connecticut and New York Legend, authored by Dan DeLuca.

And here’s why you should care. The Leatherman is one of those characters that make up the fabric of America. His legend may be of the regional variety – his old stomping grounds in the Northeast – but the mystery of the man that attracted the people of his day to immortalize Leatherman continues to reverberate. The study of his soul allows us just a little more insight into the human spirit.

And, if that sounds deep, well I guess it is.

Leatherman, circa 1885

For more on Leatherman, check out this short documentary (Part I, Part II, & Part III) from 1984. Originally shown on Connecticut Public Television, and posted to YouTube by Motion Inc., the production might be a little dated but does a great job of whetting the appetite to learn more about Leatherman.

So, you’ve got the book. You’ve got the documentary. And, as a bonus, you’ve also got a blistering live performance of Pearl Jam’s ode to Leatherman here.

Here are the lyrics to Pearl Jam’s “Leatherman”, available as a very obscure b-side befitting the very obscure subject of the song:

I heard about a man to whom I may be related. He’s Leatherman.
Died a long time ago in the 1880’s. Leatherman. Leatherman.
Covered with leather but it wasn’t tight. Underneath a moon in the woods at night.
Making the rounds ten miles a day. Once a month they’d spot him and here’s what they’d say:

“Here he comes. He’s a man of the land. He’s Leatherman
Smile on his face. Axe in his pack.
He’s Leatherman. Leatherman. Leatherman.”

Comes out of the caves once a day to be fed.
He wasn’t known to say much but, “Thanks for the bread.”

So, modern day I walk my way with my jacket faded just like a man of leather whom I may be related.
Rolled cigarette for which he’d ask for a light.
Appear to be an animal. Yet, so polite.
Making the rounds ten miles a day. Once a month they’d spot him and here’s what they’d say:

“Here he comes he’s a man of the land. He’s Leatherman.
Smile on his face. Axe in his pack.
He’s Leatherman. Leatherman. Leatherman.”

Leatherman. Leatherman.
Shake his hand. He’s Leatherman. Bake some bread. He’s Leatherman.
Shame he’s dead. I saw his bed.
It’s all that’s left of Leatherman. Leatherman.
Give me some skin. He’s Leatherman.

Hope you find Leatherman’s legacy as interesting as we do here. Stories like these are the ones worth exploring.

One eye on the prize, one eye on the eject button. Ear lifted to the sound of an escape hatch. Smell

One eye on the prize, one eye on the eject button. Ear lifted to the sound of an escape hatch. Smelling…me. The only person I want to smell right now. Touching the door knob, tasting a life that may be within reach.

Sensing that satan may have gotten behind me. But I guess it took reading the devil’s email.

True love, true love…it’s the devil’s crowbar.

I’m just disappointed I wasted 5 years of my life. That I was sad for so many years. That…that was that.

But I’m not going to shift blame. That’s only going to land me on “Intervention,” and I’d rather watch that than participate. My own personal intervention will take place when I nap down on my mom’s sofa over Christmas break. Or, perhaps I already had one when I decided that I would be angry instead of devastated.

It’s not like my castle crumbled, or my Andy Wood overdosed. Rather, I guess that I’m going to have to purge, and get rid of some old shoes, and keep burning cigarette holes in pictures, and figure out what really matters in this world, and remember that Eddie Vedder was always right: I’m still alive.

I may have scratches, all over my arms, one from each day since I fell apart, BUT, I’m still alive.

And, dear reader, so are you.

I have a lot of goals for this season! First off, I want to dawn patrol Mount Superior as many times

I have a lot of goals for this season! First off, I want to dawn patrol Mount Superior as many times as possible. Hopefully even twice in one day at some point…

Emile Hirsch stars in the movie “Into the Wild.” If you haven’t see it yet, you definitely should. Better yet, you could read the book by Jon Krakauer first. (OK, I’m guilt of not reading the book as well). The soundtrack though is absolutely incredible…all of it is by Eddie Vedder. This is an amazing song that I heard today while doing accounting for SheJumps and it made me think of my goals for the season, and, well, the general beauty that unfolds when we let our souls flow with the wind.

Such is the way of the world
You can never know
Just where to put all your faith
And how will it grow

Gonna rise up
Burning back holes in dark memories
Gonna rise up
Turning mistakes into gold

Such is the passage of time
Too fast to fold
And suddenly swallowed by signs
Low and behold

Gonna rise up
Find my direction magnetically
Gonna rise up
Throw down my ace in the hole
