Edina Gallovits s-a calificat in sferturile de finala ale turneului feminin de tenis de la Budapesta, dupa ce a obtinut o victorie de prestigiu impotriva austriecei Sybille Bammer, favorita numarul trei.
Sportiva noastra s-a impus in trei seturi, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, si o va intalni in sferturi pe croata Petra Martic, jucatoare venita din calificari.
Edina Gallovits si-a asigurat 5.340 de dolari si 70 de puncte WTA. Mai mult, prin evolutia de la Budapesta, Edina isi poate asigura revenirea intre primele 100 de jucatoare ale lumii, romanca aflandu-se pe locul 114 mondial in acest moment.

Sania Mirza tamed world number 51 Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-2 2-6 6-2 to advance to the second round of the ladies singles event of the Wimbledon championships in London. Sania will next face the winner of an all Romanina match between Edina Gallovits and Sorana Cirster.

With this win, Sania, ranked 78, has now taken a 3-0 lead over Germany’s Groenfeld, whom she beat in 2004 and 2005. After taking the first set comfortably Sania faced some fire in the second set as the German put up a detrermined fight, not throwing in the towel.

Sania had her chances right from the start but Groenfeld did not let the Indian cash in on those. Sania earned three breakpoints in the first game by hitting some good winners but the German hung on. Groenefeld then broke Sania in the next game, using drop shots very effectively and held her own to take a 3-0 lead.

Sensing danger, Sania then stepped on the gas and broke back Groenfeld but only to drop her own serve in the sixth game to squander the opportunity to draw parity. The Indian then saved two set points in the eighth game but unforced errors dented her chances and she eventually lost the set.

The Indian, however, made a brillaint start to the do-or-die third set by breaking her rival in the very first game and won four of the first five games to take a 4-1 lead. The next three games went with serve and the Indian wrapped up the set and match in style.

Yesteday’s win by Jelena Dokic may not propell her into the forefront of the Women’s tour, but it was a significant step forward for her. Her opponent, Edina Gallovits is ranked 14 spots higher than Jelena, and is considered to be an up and coming future star on the rise. Coupled with her fine showing by winning 6-3, 7-6, Jelena proved  that her training is paying off. Next up is Carline Wozniacki, a player just outside the top ten who is young and also on the rise.

Who is Gallovits?…..

Romanian tennis clay court specialist Edina Gallovits first cracked the top 100 in 2007 and has remained there ever since.

Gallovits achieved a career-high ranking of No.54 in April 2008 and now stands at No.66 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings.

In January she equalled her best Grand Slam performance by reaching the second round at the Aussie Open and has been enjoying a successful season since then.

At the start of the year Gallovits reached the quarter-final in Auckland, defeating No.3 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues en route. Following that she reached the semi-final at Bogota, eventually losing out to Argentine Gisela Dulko.

The Romanian star has since then had two first round losses at Acapulco and Monterrey, but was evidently motivated by these two losses at the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden where  she overcame Russian world No.37 Maria Kirilenko 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Gallovits was extremely successful as a junior reaching a career-high world ranking of No.7, in addition to making the final of the prestigious Orange Bowl Championships.

The 23 year-old started playing tennis aged four with her sports mad parents; her mother is a handball coach while her father is a sports teacher.

Edina’s goal is to reach the top 10 so perhaps with her recent successes and with the clay court season around the corner she can do it.

Te antrenezi zi de zi, treci peste orice obstacol, strângi din dinţi la orice accidentare, lupţi să ajungi cât mai sus. Şi toate acestea cu un singur scop! Să participi la Olimpiadă!

Faci tot ce depinde de tine, obţii lozul câştigător, păşeşti de pe puntea suspinelor pe cea a fericirii şi începi lupta cu cronometrul.

Însă atunci când crezi că totul şi toţi sunt de partea ta, autorităţile sportive, cele care trebuiau să te susţină, devin ”mai catolice decât Papa”.

Cu 3 săptămâni înaintea începerii Jocurilor Olimpice, Viorica Ţigău şi-a îndeplinit un vis… a obţinut biletul pentru Beijing, graţie unei sărituri de 6.74 m echivalente pasului decisiv de pe puntea suspinelor. Însă cum iluziile nasc şi deziluzii, atleta a aflat că ghişeul s-a închis înainte de vreme. De ce? Doar pentru simplul fapt că FRA şi COSR au închis listele de calificări cu 14 zile faţă de data limită, iar ea a avut ”neşansa” să realizeze această performanţă prea târziu.Astfel ceea ce trebuia să reprezinte o adevărată bucurie pentru ea şi pentru federaţie, de asemenea, s-a transformat într-o cursă pentru a obţine o răsplată ce i se cuvenea.

După ce acum câteva luni, Edina Gallovits părea că ne va reprezenta la Beijing, accidentarea suferită Wimbledon şi forma bună a Soranei Cârstea, i-au adus timişorencei statutul de rezervă. Nimic grav din punctul ei de vedere, însă FRT nu este de aceeaşi părere. Înscrisă în mod oficial de ITF, Gallovits nu a primit acordul din ţară de a participa, pe motiv că nu a răspuns afirmativ la convocarea pentru meciurile din FedCup, din sezonul anterior.

”Edy a explicat că nu se poate prezenta la acea acţiune. N-a fost sunată la timp şi îşi făcuse alt program de turnee.” (declaraţia mamei sportivei)

Şi când te gândeşti că deciziile favorabile luate de forurile internaţionale nu ar trebui decât să ne bucure, oficialii mioritici te lămuresc imediat şi te readuc cu picioarele pe pământ românesc.

”La ITF e harababură mai mare ca la noi. Cine e acesta? Un măturător?” Alexe Bârdan, vicepreşedinte FRT

Ca pentru orice om, mai ales român, speranţa moare ultima. Aşa s-a întâmplat şi cu Ramona Ciobanu. A obţinut locul 4 la CE de nataţie, din 2006 plus alte câteva performanţe notabile, ca şi calificarea la Jocurile Olimpice, de altfel. Rezultate destul de modeste la prima vedere, însă în spatele lor se află o poveste incredibilă. Sufocată cu promisiuni, Ramona se antrenează, cu 2 săptămâni înainte de startul competiţiei, în cele mai bune condiţii pentru un săritor în apă… adică pe uscat, aşa cum a făcut-o de la începutul carierei.

Saltelele prăfuite, plasele elastice, sala de gimnastică aproape dărâmată şi bureţii au devenit cei mai buni prieteni ai sportivilor. În ţară nu există decât un singur bazin, la Sibiu, unde în apă convieţuiesc diferite bacterii şi mătasea broaştei, iar trambulina tremură, parcă conştientă de suferinţele celor care păşesc pe ea.

În aceleaşi condiţii se află şi Constantin Popovici, cel de-al doilea săritor calificat la JO.

“Ne e foarte greu să ne acomodăm cu apa după ce ne antrenăm aici. Ne chinuim. Suntem singuri” Constantin Popovici

Vă mai aduceţi aminte de Marian Drăgulescu? Nu este decât multiplu campion naţional, european, mondial şi vicecampion olimpic, la gimnastică. Însă pentru FRG, toate acestea reprezintă doar vorbe. Accidentat în 2007, “Marocanul” a fost la un pas de a rata participarea la Olimpiadă din cauza a 5000 de dolari. Nevoit să obţină aceşti bani pentru a pleca în SUA să se opereze, Marian a cerut ajutor federaţiei de specialitate, însă răspunsul primit a fost:

“Nu mai pot merge în Statele Unite ale Americii, fiindcă nu am aceşti bani. Am adus atâtea medalii României şi asta e drept răsplată. Să fiu trimis la spitalul de nebuni la tot felul de medici incompetenţi.” Marian Drăgulescu

Acestea sunt poveşti din culisele spectacolului românesc, înainte de începerea Jocurilor Olimpice. Un spectacol ce ne prezintă o realitate tristă. O mult prea tristă realitate pentru un popor cu pretenţii.

Serena Williams began her title defense at the Sony Ericsson Open with an easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Edina Gallovits in the second round.

Serena continues the conservative and feminine look that Maria Sharapova started with her “librarian” from YEC 2007. The solid pastel separates are accented with thin contrasting colors at the hems, collars, and sleeves.

Reebok continues its feminine run with the new outfits on Jelena Jankovic. She moves away from the short shorts (DTL was totally over it) and embraces a simple v-neck dress with assymetrical contrast piping.

The Strawberry Pink version appears most recently at Jelena’s second round match at the Australian Open. The third seed took out Edina Gallovits and next faces Virginie Razzano. Jelena was also the one who defeated the booby Tamira Paszek in the first round. (See their section of the draw here.)
