Self Promotion had a very full weekend. Thank you to Editor at Large, Jonathan Simrin, for coming into the city on 2 consecutive nights. This is a huge feat for a Simrin. Mazel tov. The evening was lovely other than not being able to get a skateboard and not being able to run the bases thanks to glorious See’s Candy. (Joe Kimmel: they are GODS here.) Kids really do have all the fun. ***(Also, a big shout out to Pete of Delicate Adventures who graduated today! He is a great fan of the blog, often recalling posts that I had forgotten existed. You are so very loved by the blog community and editors.)

Tonight, the editors found some room in our quarterly budget to attend the Giants game against the Cincinnati Reds (BOO!). It was a wonderful game all around and we learned some very important lessons:

- children who dance like no one is watching are often the cutest

- children who sit in front of you and constantly give you the stank eye are not the cutest and should not have weird names

-Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are the best source for baseball snacking (Kale chips! Cashews! VEGAN)

-sailors can go to baseball games too

-Cody Ross is a G.

-Julia and I do not look under 14. I guess I can finally retire from the bar mitzvah party circuit.

-birds can poop on your hair and this is VERY upsetting to Julia. (ed. note: neither of us got pooped on, but our friends who we were sitting with came awfully close)

-AT&T Park is just the best on a nice day. The beauty of Mt. Davis leaves something to be desired.

-Small size of the city and the weather: the two things Giants players really like about SF (ed. note: Noe Valley did receive a mention. Stay tuned for details on a possible editorial retreat to camp out in either Noe Valley or the Mission to see Giants players.)

All and all the game was a wonderful success. Special thanks to Julia’s family for hooking it up! Oh right, the Giants won and there was at least one RBI. And that’s your play-by-play from your trusted blog source. I know you all come here first for the last word in sports commentary. Jon Miller has nothing on us. (Ed. note: if Jon Miller is reading this, please take no offense. We think you’re wonderful and maybe we could get lunch!)

Jono and I embarked on a movie adventure tonight. He wanted to see Super 8, but I thought it seemed

Jono and I embarked on a movie adventure tonight. He wanted to see Super 8, but I thought it seemed too weird. Then he suggested Tree of Life. I thought I had a recollection of seeing the trailer. I looked at the cast and saw Brad Pitt. I was thinking it might be like Legends of the Fall. Um, no, not quite. As I have learned before, do your research. I once went on a date with someone because they liked 30 Rock. Same logic for Mr. Pitt, not all his movies are so good. Too bad, right? Some fun facts and questions about the movie:

1. Dinosaurs make an interesting appearance. Think Planet Earth meets the bible.

2. Did they write the entire film while stoned? (Jono did not agree with this.)

3. The movie was a little like The Bad Seed but in color and with weird voices.

4. What was Sean Penn’s role? How much did he get paid to be in the movie for about 10 minutes? Maybe his credit should have been “distressed architect in a skyscraper unable to focus.”

5. How can people sit silently through films like this? Jono was trying to be very serious and would not look at me when I tried to make faces at him during boring parts, which was basically the entire film. I guess I was not a film major and I don’t get real films.

6. The mom did not look old enough.

7. We did not understand the plot. We did not understand the dinosaurs or the cell biology. We did not understand why some people were being handcuffed and being fed water. We did not understand why one child had partly shaved hair. I was mostly curious if they used the same set as 127 Hours during the rock part! And by set, I mean nature. OH SHIT.

8. Sometimes when seeing films like this, I wonder why I do not have a TV show. If people like this can make art films, I should be allowed to do something too, right?

9. I have nodded off during two evening shows in a row. I am really getting old.

10. While on the way home, I was walking up my hill and talking to my sister on the phone. I looked behind me and thought I saw a stray dog and yelled. It was a man. He thought I was crazy. This is what this film has done to me–made me totally insane. Some might say that was already the case.

This review is good.

The NYTimes writes “How boring is boring enough, but can it be a good thing?” In my opinion, no. If I wanted to be bored, I would continue to go on bad dates. I would read Jack Kerouac and pretend I loved it. I would hang out with people who don’t talk. Being bored is never good. Unless maybe you’re actually in the nature from the film, sleeping in the grass and eating delicious treats.

Jono is on assignment in Brooklyn. As part of his coverage, he visited my old home in Brooklyn to see if had been ravaged by mice/rats/fleas/bed bugs. He found that the house was still standing. While in Brooklyn, he went to Beacon’s Closet (not my fave), the Brooklyn Flea Market in Williamburg where he enjoyed different kinds of mayo, papusas, and smoked meat, and General Greene. I am glad Jono is enjoying the good things in life and becoming a real NY hipster. Come back, Jono, before a fixed gear bike attacks you or you grow a disgusting facial hair arrangement!

Self Promotion sat down (and by this I mean, emailed) with Sam Mohney to discuss his rap-inspired video he made at Wesleyan, hipsters, frat boys, his sister, haikus, and Snoop Dogg’s former brilliance. I met Sam four years ago at my college graduation and now he graduated. I feel old, and Sam says he does too. He is the younger and taller brother of longtime Self Promotion Pop Culture Professor Gillian Mohney. I see great things for Sam’s future. He has agreed to help Self Promotion with our future video projects. Perhaps a couch and a plane ticket to SF will entice him to join our company?

Sam: I’m about to answer your questions, but I just wanted to make it clear that I was only part of the creative process of the video. It was truly a collaborative work with both of my class group members (the other rappers in the video) and my good friend and roommate who helped out with the shooting, editing, and people wrangling. Also I like your website! Very funny. [I couldn't edit this out, it's just too precious, right?]

SP: What inspired you to make the “What’s the Difference” video?

Sam: Professor Eric Charry’s Music 108 History of Rock and R&B final project deadline.

SP: Were the frat boys authentic frat boys? What are Wesleyan frats like?

Sam: The frat boys were authentic in the sense that they all belonged to the Wesleyan chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon, with the exception of the rapper, Matt. But it certainly took some coaxing to get them to bring out the inner “bro” in them. We expected them to really act up for the camera when we first arrived, but they were actually really timid in front of the lens. I think Wesleyan frats are pretty similar to other frats in that they play sports and drink natty ice, but at Wesleyan, they a tinge of awareness about themselves, which is why I think they were so helpful with the video, and loved it so much when we showed the finished product to them. As we were trying to get them amped up, one of the brothers said “Oh I get it. You just want us to bro out?” Apparently, nothing goes better with cheap beer than a healthy dose of self-consciousness.

SP: How do you think your sister’s alma mater Oberlin would change if there were frats there?

Sam: I think the campus would move itself to Connecticut and start calling itself Wesleyan.

SP: Why are there no women in the film?

Sam: Because I belong to the G.R.O.S.S., or Get Rid Of Slimy girlS club, Wesleyan chapter.

But in all seriousness, we shot during finals week, so most people that helped out in the video were either finished with their finals or seriously procrastinating, and it just so happened that 95% of the people that could be in the video were men. We were in such a rush that we were just taking what was given to us.

SP: What was the production process like?

Sam: Pretty intense. We hadn’t even come up with an idea or a song to do three days before the project was due. At the end of the first day we finally settled on doing “What’s the Difference” as a story between a jock, a nerd, and a hipster, and got our last full night of sleep for three days. We spent the entire next day writing lyrics until 6am and crudely recording the song to have something to lip sync to, while simultaneously making awkward phone calls and writing awkward emails to our only connections to DKE and Eclectic asking for their help. We began shooting the day before it was due around 11am and went until about 5 or 6, ate dinner, re-recorded and mixed the song, then stayed up until 4am editing the whole damn thing together.

SP: How did the campus receive your work?

Sam: This was the most unexpected part of the entire process. We were very uncertain about the video once we had finished it. We showed it to a few roommates and close friends before we had to screen it in class, and their reactions were pretty mixed, because they liked our previous video even better. We were also seriously concerned that the satire didn’t come through enough, and that DKE and Eclectic were going to come break our kneecaps. It wasn’t really until we went to a few parties after our in-class screening did we realize how many people had actually seen it. I can’t tell you how many people came up to us over the next week with the exact same punchline:

Stranger: “I just have one question for you…”

Us: “Ummm… do I know you?”

Stranger: “WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ME AND YOU?!”

The best story surrounding all of this was when a girl came up to us to congratulate us on the video, and as Ethan (the hipster) left to relieve himself behind a house, she followed him and told him that he was cute and asked what he was doing for the rest of the night. He told her that he had to pee and had a girlfriend. Then she left. [I hope that the girl does not read this interview.]

SP: I thought that the three characters–the hipster, the nerd, and the frat boy–all looked a bit similar (all like hipsters), was this on purpose?

Sam: I think that’s more a product of being part of a Wesleyan student body that generally dresses like hipsters than it was any sort of artistic statement. [Only hipsters would use this phrase. I once did a project in high school called Cadence of Being. Yes, really, but the art teacher gave it that name, not me.]

SP: Would you consider making a video of me covering a Snoop song? My love for him is quite deep.

Sam: Absolutely, under one condition: that the cover song is more Doggystyle-era Snoop than Bieber-loving/Katy Perry-collaborating Snoop. [Thank God! I cannot handle their collaboration. It literally kills me. I also think her perception of California women is wholly inaccurate, but that's a whole other issue. I prefer Snoop discussing women he met last night, okay?]

SP: What hip hop song do you think embodies your sister Gillian?

Sam: I think either “Baby I Got Your Money” by Ol Dirty Bastard or “Work It” by Missy Elliot. I have no reason for thinking either of these songs embody Jill, but intuition is better than nothing. [I've always thought of Gillian as "None of Your Business" kind of gal, but I like Sam's ideas too.]

SP: Was it fun to rap in the video? Was that something that you imagined yourself doing when you started college?

Sam: I’ll admit I had a fun time rapping in the video, but it was something I hadn’t imagined I’d do when I started the project, let alone college. I only wanted to be the director and stay on the safe side of the camera, but my group convinced me that the only way to make the video work was to have three different characters, and they were right. I’ll also have to admit that even though I did manage to rap my whole verse, I was only able to get the timing right after Ethan had already recorded my verse and I could rap along with him. So I use the term “rapping” lightly in relation to myself.

SP: Do you have any plans for future projects?

Sam: Yeah, we’re actually planning on doing a music video mash-up where we dress-up and sing as different incarnations of Michael Jackson (i.e. Thiller-era, Smooth Criminal-era, Will You Be There-era).

Nah, I actually made that up, but that was one of the random ideas we thought up as we were furiously trying to find an idea.

SP: How would you describe a hipster?

Sam: Someone who might roll their own cigarettes, listen to music you’ve never heard of, wears tight-fitted jeans to the point of being committed, reads method magazine, rocks cut-offs and think that they’re better than all of you, is high and plastered, with an ego like the reaction from too much acid (they never come down), has 5 fixie bikes, 3 flannel shirts and some boat shoes, and is eclectic fresh.

And/or someone who lives in Williamsburg.

SP: Could you please write a haiku about each of the characters in the video?

Sam:

[BRO]

Bros live for Football

Hockey, Lacrosse, and cheap beer

So sad, college’s done.

[HIPSTER]

So aloof, heads in clouds

of smoke from weed and strange tunes

Not hippies, hipsters

[NERD]

I am not nerdy

Is what I think to myself,

but I am really

SP: Now that you’ve graduated from college, started a running craze with Gillian/Alex/Sarah, and made a hit film, is there anything that you’d like to tell the world?

Sam: Someone donate a giraffe to the next video. You’ll get an exec producer credit. I swear.

And another (not discussed in the interview):

Ellen, Rina, Kasper, and Ben live in the penthouse of a Downtown Oakland apartment building. I think it used to be a retirement home. It reminds me immensely of Florida, mostly because of the blinds and the white carpet and the formica. I would like to spend more time at their house because it is always warm when I visit and because it is spacious. They have been my Oakland ambassadors.

They cooked a taco and margarita feast tonight and the evening was a series of discussions about the Royal Wedding, Piedmont, and OBL. The evening ended with a dance session to Biggie and Snoop. It was Cinco de Mayo with a hip hop twist.

Ellen, the baker that she is, threw together some spicy chocolate cookies that she probably made 100 of.

I realized tonight that I cannot handle there being dirty dishes, so I proceeded to try to wash their dishes because I really wanted them to be clean. It was not necessary to wash them during the party, but for some reason I felt it really needed to be done. I think my hosts found this very annoying, but it was not about them, it was about me.

My mother told me that yesterday she saw a snake eat a bunny while she was at a science museum. This made me feel very sad because Bunny is my good friend and I never want HIM to get eaten by a snake. She said she could see its feet being swallowed into the snake and that the whole consumption took quite awhile!

Get excited for an upcoming review from JSim about the comedy show we attended last night at the Punchline!

Happy opening day Giants fans!

With the start of the new season comes an excellent opportunity to join the fold. The SF Giants organization has the full editorial support of this blog through and through. Julia and I have developed our own distinct style of fandom that we’d like to share with our readers. Here are some ways to tell if you belong in our Giants fan club:

You travel to Cooperstown in the hopes of seeing Aubrey’s rally thong and then, upon arrival, immediately begin to question why the hell you went to Cooperstown.

You enjoy keeping up with Panda on Twitter. Doesn’t a dinner with Panda at PF Changs just sound wonderful?

When you see the term ERA, you’re more likely to think of the women’s rights movement in the ’70s, thanks to your liberal arts degree.

You’re a little bit jealous of Madison’s wife and her gifted cow.

You often find yourself watching a Giants game with intensely focused Jewish men.

You plan which games you go to based on the freebies. If there’s no bobble head or Jewish Heritage Night scarf involved, you probably won’t be going.

Ultimately, there’s no bad way to be a Giants fan. Here’s to a great season fans!

Yesterday I went to a vegan cooking class taught by Chef Molly Austin. Her recipes were amazing. Editor-at-large, Jonathan, and I made sweet potato kugel and it was excellent (not to toot our own horn, but we’re really good cooks.) It was really easy to make. The ingredients were shredded sweet potatoes and apples, pear juice, raisins, matzo meal, cinnamon, walnuts. Basically we just mixed all the ingredients together and baked it! Super easy! It tasted really decadent even though it was pretty much non-fat.

The class was a event through Birthright Israel and it was free. The woman who hosted the event lived in a warehouse that used to be an auto shop. I told her someone should write an article about her house in a magazine and she said there was a Wall Street Journal article about it. There was a netted pit that I lay in full of stuffed animals. Twelve people live in the house and there are 2 bathrooms and 2 kitchens and an office space. They also do Air B & B. Crazy!

While Molly is away managing a kitchen this summer in Yosemite, Jonathan and I are going to do a month or more of vegan eating. Shocking, right? We are a little bit scared, but I think we will need something to entertain ourselves while Ben Simrin and Molly are away.

Good readers,

Since this blog is rooted in drawing attention to the insufferable minutia of every day life, I have something to say. Some of you know me as Jonathan and most of you know me as Jono (a small minority may be more familiar with the name Baby Bear/Babix Bear/Babix Frog or some variation thereof). These are all acceptable names. Juno is not. At work, I cannot tell you how many emails I’ve received saying, “Hi Juno”, “Dear Juno”, or “Juno why are you so good at your job?” These are not acceptable. The idea of Juno being a passable name is unacceptable. I am not Ellen Page. This is not Canada and I am not being cute, carrying a gallon of juice, fulfilling Jennifer Garner’s maternal dreams, and carrying Michael Cera’s baby. None of those things are happening so if you should ever email me, please take the time to read my email signature. Even if you don’t read my emails, I should just hope the idea of someone rocking the name Juno crosses your mind as something that is absurd.

With an emphatic “UGH”,

1. Peggy Olson (Mad Men)

I’m in the persuasion business. And frankly I’m disappointed by your presentation.

2. Angela Chase (My So-Called Life)

What I was thinking, as like a New Year’s resolution, is to stop getting so caught up in my own thoughts, ’cause I’m like way too introspective. I think… But what if not thinking turns me into this shallow person? I better rethink this becoming less introspective thing. Okay, so I’ll stay introspective, but I do resolve to stop doing Jordan Catalano’s homework.

3. Cher Horowitz (Clueless)

So okay, I don’t want to be a traitor to my generation and all but I don’t get how guys dress today. I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair – ew – and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we’re expected to swoon? I don’t think so.

3. Lelaine Pierce (Reality Bites)

I was really going to be somebody by the time I was 23.

4. Wayne Campbell (Wayne’s World)

I once thought I had mono for an entire year. It turned out I was just really bored.

5. Joan Holloway (Mad Men)

That’s life. One minute, you’re on top of the world. The next, some secretary is running over your foot with a lawn motor.

6. Liz Lemon (30 Rock)

I pretty much just do whatever Oprah tells me to do.

7. Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld)

You know you’re not Chinese.

I can’t really think of any others. I thought I related to the characters on Friends, but it turns out they’re all really dumb. I also relate to Roy Orbison (obviously).

Editor-at-Large, Jonathan, will be doing his own list too–so get excited for that. I am sure he will have different ideas because he is a man and less negative.

Tomorrow I am off to New Orleans for some coverage there. I hope not to get arrested or thrown up on. If these things don’t happen, I guess I can say it’s been a great trip.

Tonight Julix, Jane, and I went to see Michael Showalter do a book reading at the SF JCC. If you don’t know who Michael Showalter is or you’re currently googling SF JCC, stop reading now because you clearly don’t belong in this blog’s crowd. It was great to meet Boston readership representative Jane D. Jane and I are elite blog readers. It’s pretty much like using some amazing airlines credit card–just think fewer free Hawaiian getaways and more cookies from Specialtys.

But I’m not here to talk about the pure amazingness of an oatmeal wheat-germ chocolate chip cookie (that’s another entry in its own right). We were all very excited to see Michael and like all good ex-Jewish summer camp counselors, we built ourselves up for success. How did we do this? First, we enjoyed a nice meal with Lissa and Doc at Luna Park. The restaurant’s incredible mac n’ cheese and mussels made a valiant effort to counter the mediocre service and obnoxious poetry that was being read in the main room. Sadly, this would not be our last brush with pretentious literary types for the evening.

Second in setting ourselves up for success, we found a parking spot that was the stuff of dreams. Julix, the next beautiful lesson in driving is learning to appreciate good parking spots–especially in SF. We ran into Kari and then took our seats in the auditorium. Michael was hilarious as expected. He shared some wonderful poetry from his teenage years, told a story of failed flirting while on a plane, and rapped for the audience (twice!). He was fantastic, but the interviewer could not have been worse. He was some terrible Bay Area writer type and his book title included the words “Profound” and “Occasionally Pointless”–literally. That should have been a tip off. We could barely contain ourselves as this moderator continued to cut Michael off and generally be pretentious. Ugh. It eventually reached a degree of absurdity that Julia had to cut through all the bullshit in the Q&A session using two main weapons: her (romantic?) history with Michael and her creative writing degree.

Then there was a nice reception, complete with brownies, lemon bars, and Michael signing books! Check out the photos of Michael and Julia. I can’t remember which was the moment when he was saying how great Julia’s blog was or when he was asking Julia to move to Brooklyn with him.

My lovely cousin Jane is visiting right now. Jane has taught me how to be a celebrity. She has also taught me to love light beer, baseball, musical theater, lobster rolls, and black labs. Jane is about 6 months older than me. We are the same height. Jane’s bat mitzvah theme was Wizard of Oz. Mine was celestial. HAHHAHA.

Tonight I met Michael Showalter once again. During the show he talked about how he is married. Jonathan Simrin (currently Editor at Large) will be writing more extensive coverage of the event, but let’s just say, I was crushed and I fell just a little more in love with him. He is self-deprecating and beautiful. He looks even better than the last time I saw him in Williamsburg. Sigh.

Dinner at Luna Park tonight was delicious. I had mac and cheese with broccoli. So good. I would get it again and again. We also got free appetizers because the service was so bad. I love free things.

I bought a “vintage” saltines tin at the flea market today for a ridiculous 10 dollars. The man wanted 15. Totally absurd. He kept saying “it’s old.” Yes, I know. Sometimes people at the flea market bother me so much that I just want to kick things over.

Pet peeves:

-people leaving cups all over the place (really just in my room)

-people putting on makeup in public

-people who are not funny or repeat bad stories all the time

-people who do nothing to help monkeys who have escaped

-people who do not appreciate the genius that is Joe Kimmel

-when dogs destroy toys you give them

-people that cannot follow through on their word

Style Spotlight – Shala Monroque via [redcarpetfashionawards]

Shala Monroque is a fashionista who shouldn’t be under the radar.

The fashion writer, Editor-at-Large for Pop magazine and blogger has impeccable taste.

She’s not afraid of fashion often wearing bright bold pieces, but she can also been seen wearing more timeless classic pieces like the look above.

I love how she accessorizes with stand out pieces to add a touch of pizazz to some of her looks.

Like most fashion editors footwear is vitally important. Her Prada studded heels are still one of my favourites of that Spring 2010 season.

Her trademark has to be her turbans. She’s been donning this head-wear long before they were deemed cool.

This simple strapless LBD is instantly transformed with Shala’s Delfina Delettrez skeleton hand belt and black satin Prada turban.

I love the dark smokey Grace Jones-esqe make-up Shala wears here, as you’re more likey to see her without much make-up.

Her shortened modified Miu Miu dress suited the sexier look she was going for which she paired with bronze platform heels.

With her trademark turban and statement necklace, this Miu Miu maxi print dress is transformed into a more ethnic look.

Not many people would pair a Prada turban with a Rodarte Fall 2009 mini dress, but Shala is bold enough to do just that.

Love her Prada heels.

Shala does seem to favour Miuccia Prada’s work as you can see from her love of both Prada and Miu Miu.

Here are those stunning chartreuse Prada heels I referred to earlier, which she wore with a Prada ensemble.

Her love for Prada heels continues as she goes from an edgy look wearing Christopher Kane. Her sophisticated look of a red dress was paired with a mustard bag, and my favourite was this chic Prada look. I just love that tiered skirt.

To be honest, it’s been quite awhile since I was last captivated by someone’s beauty, both in and out. With her tall, lithe figure, amazing bone structure, beautiful skin and high-voltage infectious smile, Shala Monroque is STUNNING! She’s the woman who lit up the room, the woman you’d want to know… assuming you didn’t know who she was. THANK YOU SHALA FOR YOUR EXISTENCE!!!

When trying to articulate the style of bon vivant Shala Monroque, a few bon mots come to mind: daring, vivacious, sophisticated, cosmopolitan, eclectic, well-traveled, elegant, and unique. In a rather dizzying pace, Monroque, whose post as editor-at-large of Dasha Zhukova‘s incarnation of Pop magazine, has made waves on the international party circuit for her fearless taste and boundless joie de vivre. Whether Monroque is reporting on the Amelia premiere at the Doha Film Festival in Qatar (her very inspiring blog is a must-read), dancing the night away at a speakeasy in St. Petersburg, or hosting a fashion week fête attended by the jet set and art world elite, one thing becomes very clear: Shala Monroque’s wonderful wardrobe is a collection of great beauty and her artfully crafted ensembles have made quite a bold impression!

Speaking of fashion week, it seems as though no one racked up more invitations (and best-dressed nods) during the S/S 10 season than our gorgeous GOTM. Spotted outside of the Miu Miu show in Paris (above, far left), Monroque looked magnificent in a head-to-toe Prada ensemble. This particular outfit highlights one of our favorite aspects of Monroque’s artistic assemblages: her fearless approach to incorporating color and patterns into her picks. (Though our subject du jour claims to be experiencing a post-fashion month shopping hangover, she did cop to having a serious velvet crush this season.) We love her bright yellow printed skirt and the way it plays off the Mohawk-inspired heels from Prada’s F/W 08 collection and tribal beaded necklace. Try Loeffler Randall‘s Loop Skirt ($325) and Jenni Kayne’s Roll Sleeve Tank ($350) with Fiona Paxton’s Metallic Necklace ($375) or the Beaded Collar Necklace ($58) from French Connection.

Monroque offered yet another great skirt-and-top outfit at the Museum of Modern Art’s 41st Annual Garden Party last May in New York City. Though her Prada tiered skirt and chemise aren’t bold and bright, the satin and cashmere combination certainly showcase Monroque’s deft ability to weave luxurious textures into one killer look. The aforementioned pieces are no longer available for purchase, so try Theory’s Carmela Sweater ($100) tucked into Forever 21‘s Exposed Zip Mesh Skirt ($29) for a close approximation. Though Monroque’s jeweled sandals are from Prada’s S/S 09 collection, make sure to achieve a similar final polish via snakeskin platforms like Chinese Laundry’s Tied Python T-Strap Sandals ($80) and lots of faux-pearl baubles—Monroque’s are from H&M—but any costume jewelry piece will do the trick!

Of course, what is a sophisticated social without a few strong and standout frocks? Fortunately, in Monroque’s case, we’ll never have to know, as she has a wardrobe packed with directional dresses from daring designers, such as these two stellar examples from Rodarte. The cobweb Hand Knit Dress she wore to a Mike Myers-hosted benefit late last year (second from left) has been an editorial and celebrity favorite; we like how Monroque styled it with a wide black belt and ombre ankle boots. Make sure to try ASOS’ Loose Stitch Knitted Dress ($68) for a look-a-like alternative and pair it with Georgina Goodman’s Riva 1 Booties ($665) to achieve Monroque’s enviable ensemble. Last but not least, we have another cleverly crafted Rodarte design, specifically their Rafia Fringe Dress ($2500) from the spring collection. This plum-colored creation, which she wore to sit front row at Narciso Rodriguez’s S/S 10 show (far right), incorporates organic material such as fiber tassels, as well as bold colors and patterns too, and is the perfect piece to steal the show. And though this exact style is not yet in stores, we think Anna Sui’s Ditzy Floral Print Dress ($374) or Vena Cava’s Mandala Dress ($495) would be equally vibrant additions to your holiday rotation. Just make sure to slip into a pair of complimentary hued heels, like Nine West’s Fuchsia T-Strap Platform Sandals ($79) and you will be the object of outfit-centric attention everywhere!—KM

“I don’t have a high threshold for pain,” jokes Shala Monroque. No, the slender 31-year-old isn’t speaking about exercising or medical procedures; she is talking about her heels. “I have to have comfortable shoes,” she insists. Her preference? Well, Monroque hasn’t been named the proverbial queen of the kitten heel for nothing. In fact, the striking St. Lucian has been wearing the barely there heel for several seasons now, long before they were deemed in style again for fall. Such daring decisions have grabbed the attention (and admiration) of the fashion world, gradually landing Monroque on the It-girl map.

As venerable designer and close friend Miuccia Prada puts it, “She has an incredible sense of fashion, and, more importantly, it’s all very instinctive and natural. It’s really a gift.” Unlike her boyfriend, art mogul Larry Gagosian, whose more reliable style she describes as “preppy — he has worn the same look his whole life,” Monroque is continually pushing the boundaries.

She wore full midcalf ’50s-style skirts before Marc Jacobs sent them down the runway, turbans before Mrs. Prada reinstated them, and cat’s-eye sunglasses before Alexander Wang made them cool again. And for fall, she has her very discerning eye on a specific set of runway looks that she is coveting: the belted autumnal trenches at Dries Van Noten, the vivid glow-in-the-dark linear outfits from Balenciaga, and the fun, flirty party dresses from Giambattista Valli.

As for accessories? She can’t get enough of Fendi’s animal-print-lined Peekaboo bag or the luxurious snakeskin heels from Lanvin. And while her out-on-a-limb fashion sense may be innate, Monroque is banking on another theory. “Ironically, some of the outfits that receive the most attention from the fashion crowd are the ones that are a little off,” she admits. See, this girl on the go hates to pack and is actually quite bad at it, often forgetting key components of her ensemble. So she improvises.

For best friend and fellow fashion favorite Dasha Zhukova, Monroque’s innovative style can be summarized with a simple anecdote. “One time, Shala was hosting a party for a designer whose clothes she didn’t have in this particular remote location,” says Zhukova. “In order to be politically correct, she found a random piece of fabric, belted it, and turned it into a cute minidress.”

Such occurrences are de rigueur for this jet-setter, who spends less than six months a year on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where she lives. Instead, she’s in Paris, sitting front row at the Valentino couture show in a leggy lace number; in Rome for the opening of the Maxxi museum (“It’s unbelievable,” she reports back); or off in Colombia for an intimate dinner party honoring young designer Esteban Cortazar.

But international expeditions aside, New York City still holds a special place in her heart. She arrived in the city 10 years ago, and after several jobs (she was a maître ‘d at 60 Thompson’s eatery, Kittichai), she found her footing as both a Pop magazine editor at large and blogger and as an art consultant. Through the latter, she has forged strong bonds with artists like Taryn Simon, Ellen Gallagher, and Tom Sachs, who opened his awe-inspiring studio for Monroque’s photo shoot. During which, for effect, she slipped on a pair of jeweled Miu Miu stilettos, Cinderella-style. As is true for any ardent follower of fashion, if the shoe fits and is divine, she’ll wear it.

Shala Monroque: Fashions Newest Muse Speaks via [Divalocity]

As one of NYC’s hottest “Uptown Girls” who is now reaching fashion icon status with her elegantly-chic look. Shala Monroque, writer and Editor-at-Large for The Pop Magazine has been rising to the top of the fashion heap for the past three years. With her ever-changing coif and sophisticated lady like vibe, the fresh faced beauty and St. Lucia native is making her mark as a writer and a modern-day muse.

This fashionable beauty is all over the web and her chameleon like traits are getting her noticed. Whether this fashion renegade is jetting off to Paris, France or to St. Petersburg, Russia on choice assignment’s for her job or off to the many art exhibits, she’s often found in NYC where she is a part of the cultural scene.

I was interested in talking with Shala to find out a little more information about her, so I got up the nerve and asked her for an interview. As the saying goes, ask and you shall receive and she was gracious enough to allow me to interview her. No, I didn’t fly to NYC, which would have been great, but I conducted the interview the way we do them in these modern times-over the phone or via the web.

I’m sure there will be more from other individuals in the future because she is now, one to watch. And everyone wants to know who is this Shala Monroque? She’s not a singer. She’s not an actress. She’s not a model, but she sure looks like one.

Fashions newest muse gives us a taste of who she is.

Divalocity: “Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to interview you.
First of all, how are you?”

Shala: “Very well, thank you.”

Divalocity: Give us a little history about yourself. What is your occupation and where were you educated? It doesn’t matter where you attended school, I just want to show women that they can do and be anything that they set out to be with or without a higher education, just as long as they have the desire and determination to succeed. We tend to concentrate on the superficial of women and dismiss their intellect and accomplishments and I want to show them that how we think and act counts first before how we look.

Shala: I grew up in St.Lucia and went to secondary school there. I’ve attempted college, and I’m still in the process of slowly getting a degree. It’s taking forever but I’m also learning a lot by travelling as well. That works for me. I’m not going to advise anyone against pursuing higher education, I would encourage it. I’m very curious and have lots of questions and so its possible I may keep going to college for life.

Divalocity: Vogue magazine and other’s are labeling you as a socialite, do you consider yourself only a socialite? If not, please elaborate about the various philanthropic endeavors that you are involved in.

Shala: To quote Whitney Houston, “I’m every woman, its all in me” I would hate to think that I am capable of doing only one thing, its just not me. I’m very fluid and enjoy being in various environments. It’s a good way to learn. I’m currently not involved in any philanthropic endeavours. I haven’t been moved that way yet, not that I don’t care but I like to do things genuinely. I sometimes donate to Doctors Without Borders.

Divalocity: Who are your fashion influences and icons?

Shala: I don’t know that I really have any. Everybody influences me. The list would be too long.

Divalocity: I believe that Haute Couture is an art form and should be protected and preserved for future generations to see. Do you feel that there is a relationship between fashion and art?

Shala: Art speaks, fashion speaks. That’s the relationship between the two.

Divalocity: Who are some of your favorite designers? You seem to have a penchant for fabulous accessories and I love how you play them up, who are some of your favorite handbag designers?

Shala: Right now, I’m over the “It Bag” phenomenon. Actually I was never really into it. I am not into “it-anything” for that matter. I like what I like no matter what anyone thinks. That said, I am into Hermès now because they are classic bags that are very utilitarian and chic. Some of which have been around for decades.

Divalocity: I saw the pictures on The Sartorialist Blog of you taken during PFW and every one commented wanted your Birken bag.

Divalocity: Who are your favorite artists? Which do you prefer, Modern Art or that of the Old World Master painters?

Shala: Difficult to answer, so I’ll stick with Picasso for the moment because he can never be erased. I’ve learned that sometimes the paintings I hated most are the ones I’ve come to love the most.

Divalocity: Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Shala: I don’t really look at life that way, especially now. My motto of the moment is “Inshallah” God willing, what will be will be et cetera.

Divalocity: What words of inspiration can you give our readers?

Shala: “This too shall pass”

Divalocity: Jet-setting from place to place seems like a glamorous lifestyle, please tell my readers how important it is for women to travel the world and learn about other cultures.

Shala: Travel is important to learn about the world. But I also know people who have zero interest in travelling and are quite happy. So its all about knowing oneself and what one wants out of life. I’ve always wanted to travel, I was always curious and so that has led me down this path but before I could physically travel, I travelled by way of books and its also a great way to see the world. Read, read, read, ask questions, its like travelling through the minds of others.

Divalocity: What are some of your favorite cities in the world?

Shala: Paris, Rome, Venice, Marrakesh, and of course, New York City.

Divalocity: What simple health, fitness and beauty tips can you give us to continue looking fabulous?

Shala: I’m the worst person to ask that question. I’m all about a healthy mind, a curious mind, intelligence, these are the things that are beautiful to me.

Divalocity: What are some of your fashion words to live by and words of inspiration that get you through tough times?

Shala: It’s not that deep. Always Wear Confidence.

Divalocity: You are so right and that’s one of my favorite accessories.

Divalocity: What are some of your favorite home essentials that you can’t live without? Do you bring a touch of home with you when you travel?

Shala: Music.

Divalocity: What are some of favorite shopping destinations and why?

Shala: Souks, because there’s just so much to see. Prada because of the whole environment, the music, the art, you sometimes walk into a Prada store and every single person is dressed alike right down to the red lipstick. I like that sort of madness. But in general I love to shop, I always have and suspect always will. Growing up as a child I would save the bus fare just to walk around “town” and window shop. I could have told you where to find anything.

Even when I moved to New York and had no money, I loved walking into expensive or 99cent stores just to see what was going on. One can tell a lot about a people by the merchandise of their stores. Like I could tell there were Chinese living in Harlem because at Pathmark they sold chicken’s feet. I look at shopping mostly from that angle. So mostly its shopping for ideas and information.

Divalocity: You are indeed a style chameleon when it comes to everything about your style and there’s never nothing routine about it. When I first your picture in the NYSD, I was in awe of you because you wore your hair natural, now with many women of African descent embracing their beautiful hair, what is your favorite way of wearing your hair and why? Women of African descent have various ways that they can wear their hair styled and always have, I just feel it’s refreshing to see a woman self-define what she deems as beautiful by embracing who she is.

Shala: HAIR. The one constant is that my hair is always changing. Mainly because I’m easily bored. I had my hair short and natural then because at that point wanted one less hassle in my life. But then I wanted to look less like a boy and more “feminine.” Only black people truly understand the difficulty of black hair, and also the pride that black people take in their hair.

I have a book that documents the various hair-styles from Africa for maybe two hundred years, and basically black people have always had fun with their hair. None of these hairstyles are new. Afros, cornrows, Mohawks, dreadlocks, weaving, its centuries old. I don’t know why people take it so seriously. For black people hair is like the “It Bag” or a blank canvas, same thing.

Divalocity: How can I score an invite to NYFW, my daughter and I have been dying to get there forever?
Shala: I have to think about that one for a bit. I go because of work. Maybe you can do it through your blog, get a press pass.

Divalocity: I’ll do just that and I’ll start writing the PR’s of the designer shows that I want to see.

Divalocity: Again, thank you for your time and the wonderful opportunity to interview you.

Shala: Thanks.

Divalocity: There you have it ladies and gentlemen. Shala has given us a little information about herself and she seems to be just as down to earth as ever. She’s what I call, “Living Well” and that’s what we all should strive for because we deserve it.

There’s no question that the editor-at-large of Pop Magazine is a visionary. Just take a look at her personal style. Her coveted fashion sense is best described as classic meets edgy—a sophisticated yet eccentric blend of tailored designer pieces (think pencil skirts and flirty A-line dresses) and bold statement-making accessories (chunky necklaces and animal-print clutches with unexpected pops of color). She has definitely been on our style radar for a minute. This is one crush that’s not going anywhere. Check out her blog here!

You Should Know : Shala Monroque via [fashionbombdaily]

by Claire

Hey Guys!

Today I wanted to profile a new Fashion Bomb worthy stylista on the scene, Shala Monroque:

The young editor-at-large of Pop Magazine (and girlfriend to famously wealthy art mogul Larry Gagosian) has been busy on the party circuit, meriting a place as one Style.com’s Top Party People of 2009 and Who What Wear’s Girl of the Month, thanks to her fearless style, sick shoe collection, and indisputable beauty. We thought it was high time to see what all the buzz was about, and we weren’t disappointed!

For international fashion weeks, Shala brings out the boldness in vibrant colored skirts and simple shirts, punched up with tribal heels and chic statement necklaces.

At fashionable fetes she keeps the flavor going in fun mini dresses set off by cute feather adorned stiletto sandals or slim cut airy separates with interesting details.

For more casual engagements, she skews towards simple in solid colored blazers worn over conservative shifts.

But whatever she wears, it’s clear: homegirl is fierce!

If you want to channel a bit of her essence, do so with these fun picks:

In an attempt to keep myself awake in lecutre, and also because the topic is interesting, I’m going to blog about a panel we are having in my journalism class today about the present and future of journalism.

First off the Panel Members:
Rachel Sklar- Editor at large for Mediaite (her twitter can be found here)
Adam Sternbergh- Editor at large for New York Magazine (Tweet’s here)
Scott Lamb-managing editor of BuzzFeed.com (twitter feed here)
Chuck Klosterman-author of Sex, Drugs and Coco Puffs, among other works.

Rachel started by talking about the importance of embeddable media in journalism. She called ‘the rise of clip culture’ the future of journalism. “Learning how to use video effectively and legally is important” in the future of journalism.

Scott’s first was about buzzfeed.com’s goal to aggregate everything from “breaking news stories to cat videos to sex tapes.” He said their focus is for people who are “bored at work and maybe at class.” …I then went and checked out buzzfeed.

Adam is the panel’s only print author. He talked about the power of his magazine and also it’s website while asking us about what got us as journalism students interested in being journalisim students.

Chuck started as a newspaper writer but now writes books (and still sometimes features). He said that the way people consume feature stories have changed because of the way we read stories about the internet. He also writes essays, which he says is the most pervasive form of writing now a days, even calling twitter a ‘mini-essay’ in some respects.

Professor Stevens then asked if we should be worried about the way our brian’s function now that the internet helps us to be more sporadic.

Rachel said that it is important to remember to ‘eat our broccoli’ when it comes to the news. To remember that things are important and have meaning, and not just absorb for absolutions sake.

Chuck said that the idea you think about is not important– but that the way you think about it is key. He said that from the writing perspective it matters less what you choose to write about, but instead that you should focus on the way you write it– take a small idea and make it big, or take a big idea and make it small.

Adam disagreed with Rachel’s idea, saying that at every point in American history people have been worried about that age being the pinnacle of frivolity. He said that the internet has made it easier to find dumb people saying things, where as before they were still saying them, you just didn’t have to engage with it.

Scott said that the internet has moments of wonderful new possibilites that are changing things that are super important.

Adam brought up an interesting point about how 6,000 words in a magazine seems the perfect length, but that the same amount of text on the internet seems to be too long. He also said that the rise of Twitter/internt comments have made him more cautious as a writer, saying that the instantaneous ability to respond to his writing makes him more paranoid about his writing.

Chuck brought up the fact that those who like to be involved in social media get their voices exaggerated. He said that when we look at commentators on websites we assume that the response we are seeing is the consensus even though this may not be the case. He said the best thing to do regarding comments about your piece is to look at them- but to have no emotional response to those comments. He also said that the piece and the comments tend to feel the same to other readers.

Rachel talked about the power of anonymity in website comments. She wants commentators to have a public persona and back their comments up with enough facts to allow others to disagree with them.

Next came a discussion of wikileaks and it’s supporters. Rachel talked about the tension between security officials and the ‘renegade hackers’ saying that this has been, and always will be, a tension.

Professor Stevens asked Adam about the power of magazines into the future. Adam responded by asking what journalism means. He says that the finical future of journalism is uncertain, but that the future of journalism as a method of investigating and enlightening is bright. He doesn’t expect New york magazine to be in it’s current paper form in 10 years, but he said that he wouldn’t be surprised if someone disagreed. He wondered, however, what journalism will become on the internet– how much of the content will be driven by words vs. how many will be driven by videos and such.

Chuck talked about the physical power of books. He said that books are used in many different ways: to have people look at them and think that you are smart was one answer. He said that books will exist longer for these types of reason- making them last longer than other print media such as newspaper. He said that e-books are not a bad thing, but talked about the danger of publishers stopping giving advances. He said that if advances go away the books that will be left are books from people who can write in their free time, people who are rich enough to write with out an advance and from people who write for the pleasure of it (these would be the true masterpieces).

Rachel talked about the need to find a balance between writing things with lasting importance, while also trying to stay current with Sarah Palin’s later tweet for example.

Most of the panel was optimistic about the future of Journalism. But what do you guys think? Where is the future of journalism going? Is it twitter, facebook, blogs, iPads? I’d love your thoughts.

Anna Dello Russo – the absolute definition of a true fashionista! Her career in the editorial side of the fashion world (Fashion Editor at Vogue Italia, Editor of L’Uomo Vogue, Editor At Large and creative consultant for Vogue Japan) is inspiring, but it is her personal flair with clothing and accessories which is mesmerizing. In person, she is captivating and charming… wearing a whimsical and alluring ensemble consisting of a white corset mini-dress and sky-high heels, with netted cherries on top. Sensational!

The evening I met and briefly spoke with Ms. Dello Russo about this season’s trends was at a cocktail reception hosted by Lane Crawford in an intimate walk-in wardrobe, complete with all of the new essential pieces which clearly represented the direction of fashion for the coming year. Our brief conversation touched down on this season’s newest, most innovative trend: faux fur, an essential for the coming season which is likely to continue as designers seek innovative and sustainable textiles to translate luxury into affordability. A win-win trend which I, personally, will consider embracing this year during the two cold weeks of Hong Kong winter.
