About five or ten minutes into Assassin’s Creed 2, an achievement bubble popped up, but it looked a little bit different. Instead of the standard Xbox gray and green text bubble, this one was white and had black text and a weird “U” in the circle, replacing the symbol we now accept as a basic image of the Xbox 360. Instead of getting the typical achievement unlocked message, a window pops up saying that an action has been completed. Welcome to Uplay, Ubisoft’s own version of achievement points and, honestly, Microsoft could learn something from this.

Ubisoft’s new Uplay service (too many U’s!) awards players essentially for progressing through the story of the game, the only game using it so far being Assassin’s Creed 2. Achievement points are just bragging rights earned by doing some sort of outstanding action inside of the game, Uplay units (no really, stop with the U’s) are generally easier to attain and can be used to buy rewards in Assassin’s Creed 2, or other Ubisoft games soon to be released, namely Splinter Cell Conviction and R.U.S.E.

Actions depend on each game and can be either basic progression events or something you would want to do anyway (upgrading weapons in Splinter Cell), and Rewards can range anywhere from exclusive maps, dashboard themes, and costumes for your characters to actual weapon unlocks, upgrades, and new abilities. By far, the best part of these Uplay units is that they’re transferable between Ubisoft games and consoles. Get 50 units in Assassin’s Creed 2 on the PS3, but don’t want anything that game offers? No problem, just buy the SCAR-H in Splinter Cell Conviction on 360 or an ability upgrade in R.U.S.E. on the PC. It’s all one big pool of points to Ubisoft.

This is something that Microsoft and Sony could learn with their achievement points and trophies. For years now, they’ve been rewarding us with points for what we do inside of the game, so why not let us actually use those points for something? Yeah, microtransactions would end up suffering, but I’ve got 10,000+ gamerscore points that only show that I’ve done something in a game. Again, just bragging rights. And I don’t even like bragging! Maybe Ubisoft can do something here; maybe they can change the [meta]game here a bit. I might be totally wrong, and there will probably not be an evolution from bragging rights to usable credit, but I’m definitely interested in seeing if anything happens here, no matter how small.

Check out the Uplay home page for more information.

Graduation looms in the ever-pressing future and I’m sure my former friends and acquaintances will turn into heathens, as we race for the few jobs that await for us in the wide world. I, too, am not above groveling for a job; I’m desperate for a chance to prove myself in the field I’ve selected and defended for the past four years. If I had counted the number of arguments I’ve had- the hours I’ve spend-debating the future of media, its merits, etc.,- I’m sure I’d have reached unimaginable numbers by now. But I’m not a counter, nor a mathematician who might take the time to figure out some weird formula. So, you’ll just have to take my word for it. The point of this blog post? I’m scared shitless.

Have you started getting spam emails, test messages and pop-ups about the end of the world yet? Well

Have you started getting spam emails, test messages and pop-ups about the end of the world yet?

Well you should pretty soon. 2012 is almost here.

We’ve all heard the conspiracy theories—the Ancient Mayan calendar, solar flares, Obama’s next term… all these events coincide with the year 2012. But honestly, I am tired of hearing that the world is going to end then. And I am sick of hearing about people giving up retirement funds for such events. So I went about trying to see if there is any truth to this bizarre theory.

I tried to find the truth the normal way: by typing “2012” into Google. Seven million results within .25 seconds, mostly conspiracy websites advertising doomsday. Here is what most of them say, and why you shouldn’t believe them.

The first justification for 2012 I found was that the Mayans predicted the end of the world in that year. The Maya civilization, known for its scientific and technological advancement, existed in North and Latin America till about 900 AD, when Spain conquered these areas. But despite their accurate astrological predictions, I don’t think their calendar was very accurate. Here’s why.

The Mayan calendar was used for a variety of purposes, therefore most of the Mayan calendars were very short. For example, The Tzolk’in calendar only lasted for 260 days. The Mayans later put together the Tzolk’in and the Haab calendars to form a round calendar of 365 days, which could exist for about 52 years. With a clever numerical expansion, the Mayans expanded the 52-year calendar using the base units 13 and 20. This longer calendar could not go on for more than 5126 years, which ends in 2012.

So, while this system might have been great for recording major events and everyday tasks, basing the future of human civilization on an ancient expiry date sounds just a tad bit crazy.

Another myth that I found was that of Planet X. This is the elusive planet that was first photographed in 1983 by NASA. It is said that it is moving closer to Earth, and is expected to ‘appear as two suns in the sky to us, no later than 2011.”

People who believe this are highly misled, or trust their television sets too much. For anyone who can see through this, it is nothing but sensationalized news headlines. Dr. Gerry Neugebauer, co-investigator in the IRAS project, has said that scientists don’t actually know what Planet X is. Renown astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson has gone on record saying that “the earth will be here before, during and after 2012.”

In fact, scientists don’t know for sure if the object is actually a planet—it could be comet, a young galaxy or something else. This is nothing but a classic example of conspiracy theorists using the media to create evidence to support falsehood.

Another myth I found was that solar flares would engulf the earth and roast us alive on Dec. 21, 2012. Okay, so there is SOME science behind this. But this is another manipulation of science used by movies and writers to make money. Nothing more than our regular Y2K scare.

The sun has a natural cycle of changing magnetic field lines every 11 years. And even if the sun manages to shoot out killer sci-fi solar flares at us, scientists are sure it won’t pass through our thick atmosphere and cause enough damage to destroy all life on planet Earth. The sun is a stable star, and the Earth is a stable planet. Let’s get real now—as cool as it may sound, we’re not going to meet our death against evil tentacles of fire.

One of the last and most serious predictions I found were made by Nostradamus, a French author infamous for his prophecies. Some people believe that according to his theories in Les Propheties, the world will end in 2012. Worse yet, some people believe that he predicted Napoleon and Hitler to be the first and second Antichrists, and a person named ‘Mabus’ will be the third one. Let’s get this straight: Nostradamus’s prophecies continue till about the year 3797, obviously telling us that the end of the world will NOT be 2012. And the part about Mabus: Nostradamus’s exact words were: “when Mabus will die”, there will be “a horrible undoing of people and animals”. No end of the world, no Apocalypse.

In all, the hype is purely fictional. There are no ‘telltale signs of the end of the world’. It is nothing but our own paranoia caused by our inability to deal with problems like the global economy. It is this fear that all the major industries are making money off of. In my research, I came across over 30 different websites selling gas masks, sleeping bags, and other items ‘necessary for survival after the Apocalypse.’ Obviously, it’s another media ploy to make money in these rough times.

So, thanks Internet. Thanks Verizon. Thank you everyone, but I think I’ll take my sweet time growing up. I’m not preparing for an apocalypse anytime soon. I’ll be happily finishing up my sophomore year in college, and if the Apocalypse arrives then, so be it. At most, I hope it’s on the day of a major history final.

Steam is selling City of Heroes Architect Edition (which includes City of Villains) for $10. The sale ends in about 22 hours. Should I try it out? I’ve never played an MMO anything, and it looks like something to try for a bit. Apparently the game’s site offers a free 14-day trial, so that may be a better bet.

I don’t think I’ll really like it that much, but I’d feel better making fun of MMOs if I had actually tried one out first.

Guten Tag, Herren und Frauen! You have not slipped into a bad Harry Turtledove novel; Germany still

Guten Tag, Herren und Frauen! You have not slipped into a bad Harry Turtledove novel; Germany still lost, Hitler was still abducted by the Reptilians and the Bildebergers for use in their genetic cloning experiments for the coming war against the Ant People and their Raëlian allies. Xenu be praised.

That aside, today we are going to talk about marketing, in apropos of the spirit of the American holiday season, which celebrates the holy trinity of capitalism, consumerism and people buying us copies of Cooking Mama VI: Mama’s Revenge for our Wiis, because that is what real gamers play.

It comes in two flavors, Noble Alliance Blue and Dirty Horde Red.

One thing that always bothers me is products like Mountain Dew’s Game Fuel (now with World of Warcraft color-coding!) or the abysmal Mana Potions. You see, gaming, being a sedentary sport played by people in (mostly) stationary positions doing nothing more physically strenuous than pressing buttons, and yet we need performance-enhancing drugs like refined sugars, caffeine, and dubious flavors known only as “miscellaneous berry.” Which berries, I ask. Loganberries? Gooseberries? Berries of the nightshade plant? Inquiring minds need to know.

These curiously ignorant attempts at reaching gamers exploit our caffeine addictions, formed by years of worship of the totemic Doctor “Pepper” and his twenty-three flavors of troll mojo. Another curious tie-in is the horrid Gilette Fusion Gamer razor, which ignores all known principles of proper shaving for some abomination with four unnecessary blades and a “comfort” strip of dubious provenance. It is even marketed to a segment of the population not known for their shaving habits. I do not know what sorts of arcane chambers in which advertising sorcerers work their dark and foul devilry, but it is remarkably ill-advised. Note: I am a lawyer and available to advise you on the proper rituals to dominate the already-jellied minds of gamers, for a modest price of silver and virgin’s blood.

But what about food? Certainly after a dangerous shave while hyped up on “mana” potions, gamers must somehow replenish their vital nutrients before settling in for a testing bout of “leetspeak” over “Xbox live” while “headshotting” some “noobs” in “Halo?” Quotation marks.

Of course there is a source to “pick the best and most popular food for gamers,” because, as a completely different subspecies of homo sapiens (homo sapiens alludus), our stomachs have evolved a capacity to process mostly inedible inorganic compounds into vital fat cells which cling to our posteriors and jowls, much like a bear might store up for hibernation. Among the top contenders are pizza (delivered by your local slop house of choice… lookin’ at you, Dominos) or the fetid “Hot Pockets,” which are neither hot nor pocketed, but rather balls of indigestible dough wrapped around a type of tomato-based molten lava with a frozen-solid pork product core.

FIE! I say. We are gamer-kind, and we deserve epicurean culinary delights fit for the tables of monarchs, not this plebian slop dished out by the corporate overlords meant to lull us into complacency. In other dimensions of the Multiverse I am known for my fierce advocacy of the cuisine of my native land, a cuisine developed for hearty pioneers crossing a harsh and unforgiving landscape, trailing hundreds of bovine beasts, driving them to their eventual slaughter. As such, the cuisine is cheap, easily made with a minimum of preparation, hearty and as cruel and merciless as the land and fate of our bestial charges. The national dish of Texas is chili con carne, or, in the language of our Spanish ancestors, “meat with hot stuff.”

A properly-prepared bowl of Texas Red Chili

Texan children are weaned by taking them out to the barbed-wire fence, where their flesh is ritualistically pierced and their first chili spoon given to them. If the child survives his or her introduction to this hot and hearty beef stew, he or she is marked as an adult of the tribe and set to work hunting, gathering, fishing, or fighting our northern enemies, the Oklahomans. Ours is a difficult life, but rewarding, as we stand over our fallen foes, scalps in hand, the ululating cry of the Apache upon our raw and reddened maws, we are truly alive in a way you civilized people could never be. There is nothing better in life than to drive our enemies before us, to crush them, and to hear the lamentations of their women. We live, we slay, and are content.

I realize that this view of our barbaric simplicity is alluring, and wish to tell you that though many who are Texan are not born within our borders, we accept all who can follow the Path of Fire into adulthood, no matter age, ethnicity, or Wii-owner status.

Your first step upon this initiation is to kill a cow, dress it, and turn it into chili. Due to a technicality in the writing of the ancient ritual by Jim Bowie himself, may his knife be ever sharp, you do not actually have to kill the cow yourself. Simply preparing the meat is sufficient. In the interest of inducting more members into the tribe, I will provide the ritual recipe for the dish of chili con carne. There is some room for fudging with the recipe; for instance, many orthodox Texans will tell you that “beans” may not be added as a stretching agent to chili. This is true if, for instance, one is attempting to appease the gods at the Oracle of Terlingua, as the priests there are notoriously strict in their readings of the Canonical Texts. This, however, has more to do with class politics than any true dogmatic observance. In ancient times, many of the poorer tribes were not as rich in meat as others, and the use of “filler” agents such as the cheaper and more plentiful frijoles (read: beans) was widespread. Purists, or more appropriately, the bourgeoisie in Austin that could always afford plenty of chuck, defined the dish as “not containing beans.” Growing up as I did amongst the oil scavengers of the Permian Basin, beans were a solid, working-class staple, fit for any proletarian hero. Still, as you will no doubt be viewed as (temporary) outsiders, I have elected to provide the “cookpot chili” recipe, which uses none of the proletarian fillers. This is true royalist chili, the “safe road” for your initiation. I hesitate to say it is unqualifiedly safe, because no novice should approach the smoky, fiery heat of chili unwarned. The dish is prepared to be spicy; you must be prepared to eat it.

The ingredients you will need:

3 pounds chuck beef, either ground or cut into 1″ cubes
.25 pound beef suet
3 ancho chili pods, dried and finely chopped
5 chiles de arból, also dried and finely chopped
3 piquin peppers (bird peppers), dried and chopped
4 tablespoons ground cumin seeds
2 tablespoons sea salt
1 tablespoon coarse ground black pepper
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 quart beef stock
1 tablespoon minced garlic
.5 tablespoon onion salt
2 tablespoons of Mexican oregano
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper (fresh is preferred)
one cup of dark chili powder (I prefer the Gebhardt brand)
2 8 oz. cans of unsalted tomato sauce
.5 cups cold water
.25 cup masa flour

First, fry the suet in a large skillet. Add the beef a pound at a time, mixing in a third of the chili pods each time. Brown the meat by stirring it with the chili pods. Once all the meat is in the skillet with the suet, add:

2 tablespoons cumin
2 tablespoons sea salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Mix well together. Once meet is entirely browned and the seasons evenly distributed, transfer suet, meat and spices to a large cookpot. In this pot, add the tomato sauce and the rest of the spices, keeping back only the chili powder, water and masa flour. Mix the water and masa flour together in a separate bowl until a thick, gruel-like substance results. Stir in the masa flour mixture, distributing the spices evenly among the meat and sauce mixture. Finally, add the dark chili powder a little at a time, stirring vigorously to distribute it throughout.

Cover and simmer for thirty minutes over a low-medium heat, stirring occasionally. For hotter chili, additional chiles may be used, such as Anaheim, chipotle, or habanero peppers, dried and powdered. For a stronger taste, use a cup and a half of chili powder, the fresher the better.

Once the stew is cooked, serve it in a large, shallow bowl. Traditional garnishes are sour cream, mild yellow cheeses like colby or cheddar, diced onions, chives, and corn tortillas, either fried crispy or warmed in a skillet.

Be warned: this meal is extremely filling and very much a “protein bomb.” Do not expect to do any strenuous activity for at least a few hours. It is also quite spicy, but as a plus, preserves very well in a covered bowl and can be reheated many, many times. It will “stick with you,” by which one tends not to feel hungry for many hours, up to days. It is perfect for those all-night gaming sessions, when being disturbed by hunger pangs will just not do. Make sure you keep a small glass of milk on hand to quell any nascent capsaicin burning. Remember, capsaicin (the chemical that gives peppers their bite) is acidic, and so water, beer or soft drinks will do nothing to end its fire. Only dairy or something extremely alkaline like chalk or baking soda will stop the burn.

All who are worthy, come and kneel. We shall receive thee.

Another popular dish is the “frito pie,” which is chili served over Fritos® brand chips, topped with shredded cheese. I have also had success in putting chili and cheese inside a flour tortilla to make a chili taco, or putting it over al dente spaghetti and topping with fresh mozzarella. Regardless, should you survive your ordeal, you must venture to Texas, to our ritual spot of Austin, and stand before the great Tower and make obeisance to the memory of all Texans gone before you. Only then will we press into your hand your sword, and allow you to join us in the barren marches north of Dallas to fight the invading Oklahoman horde. Welcome, brothers and sisters.

I am writing this on vacation – a few days away in Vancouver….rain, rain and more rain…but it’s not home and that’s important. I always try to catch up on some reading while away and this week I read a lengthy paper from the Research and Policy in Development (RAPID) programme at Oversees Development Institute (a UK independent think tank on international development and humanitarian issues) and it reminded me of two blogs I had previously posted. In my blog about Sarah Michael’s work on knowledge mobilization for environmental policy and in an unrelated post, I wrote about how we need to use evidence to inform our own KM services. As I read the piece from RAPID I came back to a synthesis of these two previous blogs.

RAPID produced the paper “Knowledge, policy and power: Six dimensions of the knowledge–development policy interface” available here. The paper explored the six key areas of the knowledge–development policy interface including: Types of Knowledge; Political Context; Sectoral Dynamics; Actors; Innovation Frameworks and Knowledge Translation. Three key things I took away from this article:

1- The authors cite Ian Graham’s knowledge generation and translation cycle model. I am continually impressed how Canadians are among global leaders in thinking about and doing knowledge mobilization.

2- The section on Innovation Systems (IS) aligns well with ResearchImpact’s KM philosophy. To summarize:

IS emphasizes the supply as well as the demand for knowledge, and the need to strengthen the voice of knowledge users

The importance of tacit knowledge

The importance of networks and linkages as channels for increasing the uptake of knowledge, and the need to facilitate trust and interaction

The need for ‘intermediary functions’

3- The role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to support the work of intermediaries. “Rather than trying to bring audiences into an organization’s own space, ICTs have enabled them to take its messages to the audience.” ODI cites use of RSS feeds, video streamed public meeting, Facebook, the production of short research summaries and Wikipedia. Click on the “Web 2.0” tag cloud on the blog and see what we have written on ICTs and KM.

The work and writing of ODI from the perspective of International Development is evocative of the writing of Sarah Michaels on Environmental Policy. There is convergent evolution of tools and processes for KM regardless of the discipline. Here’s the first issue: SILOS. On October 7, 2009 Jason Guriel wrote in Mobilize This! about KM as a means of breaking down silos. If we continue to read, write and speak in silos we will not maximize learning opportunities to continually improve our own KM services by using evidence from any discipline to inform our own KM practice.

Here’s the next issue: BRIDGES. As ODI writes, intermediaries are critically important in knowledge-policy interface, “Empirical research on intermediaries is urgently needed given the high level of demand for such a brokering role by analysts, policymakers and practitioners alike, as are efforts to assess and share lessons with regard to new approaches to capacity building.” Knowledge brokers such as those developing within the ResearchImpact network and the networks forming amongst York’s KM associated research projects (see here) are intermediaries. We can build bridges between our own silos.

So a charge to all knowledge brokers: you may need to live in a silo for your own professional service delivery but build bridges between the silos.

And a question: who sets the table that allows diverse knowledge brokers to share a meal? Where can the brokers in nursing talk to the brokers in environmental policy? Where can knowledge brokers in mental health sit down with those in international development? Any thoughts? Use the comment feature above to let us know what you think.

P.S. While in Vancouver check out the Pacific Palisades Hotel. It looks like a converted apartment building just off Robson St. so your hotel room is actually an apartment and centrally located. Come to Vancouver and check out the Pacific Palisades and go to the Vancouver Aquarium where you can participate in “sharing knowledge”.
