I seem to start all my posts quite negatively, so apologies for the blatant similarity here. Scanning down the page, I noticed my previous two posts started with ‘I don’t know anything about (fill in blog subject here).’ My problem this time was my non-existent experience of interviewing anyone in the public eye, and the fact I had never heard of Lady Lykez.

So, with a few hours until I was due to due to call her, I did some serious researching. What I found was really impressive. There aren’t many 19 year olds who have already played Glastonbury, T in the Park, worked in America, and supported Method Man and Redman on tour. She’s also about to release her debut album, Lykez, Camera, Action.

The thing that interested me most was the Method Man link. I’m probably showing my age here, but I remember when his group, Wu-Tang Clan, became huge in the summer of ’97. Wu-Tang Forever had just been released, amid massive hype generated from the success of ‘93’s Enter the Wu and various members’ solo albums. Method Man’s gravel-like, unique voice made me fall in love with every Wu-Tang Forever track featuring hm.

Well aware that the interview was about Lady Lykez and not my teenage hip-hop obsession, I wrote a set of open questions with a rough idea of how the interview would probably go. The absolute worst thing that can happen in this situation, I’m told, is if every question is met with a monosyllabic answer. I could only hope for the best.

There were no such problems, fortunately. She happily gave full, informative answers, and I actually had to cut half of them from the final interview to save space. As you can imagine for someone so successful, she came across as bright, witty, and above all sensible. When I asked if she had advice for anyone thinking of trying their hand at the music game, she had some useful pointers. Her suggestions were to stay in school, get some decent grades, and make sure you have something to fall back on – because not everyone makes it in music. Wise words indeed.

Interviews are always best if you can get something a bit juicy – something that gives you an insight in to a person’s slightly controversial view on a subject. Her opinion that ‘you don’t really need talent to become famous anymore’ provided just that. She was quick to point out, of course, that talent was a necessity when she got her big break.

Naturally, I quizzed her briefly about her supporting role for Method Man and Redman. Apparently they are really nice guys, but totally different. Red is lively and loud, and Meth is more the strong silent type. I got the impression that meeting well-known artists doesn’t faze her at all. In fact, the music industry in general doesn’t faze her. She has her feet firmly on the ground and takes it all in her stride.

Lykez performs live in Camden Town on Monday
30th November. Get tickets!

Hey guys!

Last weeks lesson was about how games can make learning more effective and fun (I’m sure you have read some of the articles on that, e.g. at Teaching New Media To…), so I’d like to tell you about the webgame that I took a closer look at.

It is called Bookworm and I think that it is great fun. The player has to find words in a cluster of letters. Each letter has a certain worth (just like in Scrabble) and you can score points for each letter you can use. There are additionally green letters that score bonus points and red letters. Those red letters move towards the bottom of the cluster and once they reach it, the game is over.

The game was really fun to play although I am not really convinced of it’s educational use, since you do not learn anything new (e.g. new words) but simply search for words you already know. Another disadvantage is that apparently the words have to be at least three letters long (words like “so” “or” and “do” do not work). Also, the English version of the game cannot be linked, so you have to switch the language each time you start the game.

I looked around the page a little more and found another game called Typer Shark, which is also very entertaining. Here you have to type in words, letters or symbols on sharks an piranhas, before they eat you (that is your diver avatar). Here you are supposed to learn to type correclty.

Both games are tremendously funny to play, but their educational value is more than questionable.

We created seven categories for analyzing learning software:

1) availability and costs

2) age group, language level

3) type of exercises

4) design

5) authenticity and competences

6) relevance for school and didactic aspects

7) interactivity

Game 1: Bookworm

1) free online game

2) English, all levels of learners

3) spelling games

4) colourful, young and professional

5) no authentic language use, activation of the already existing vocabulary

6) rather a free time activity which might help students, fun activity. Might be helpful as an additional exercise or an award

7) no interactivity

The game is very colourful and it´s fun. However, there is much advertisement and many pop-up windows on this site. There are also games which do not contain any learning activities. In sum, the games supports a general language awareness but is nor rich in content.

Game 2: Leo Network- English Word Games

1) free online game

2) English, all levels of learners

3) word games (crosswords, Ding Things, VocabGames, hangman, Homophones, Memory…)

4) old, boring, not appealing but structured

5) only single words are tested, no authentic language use

6) possible as additional activity (game) but not advisable

7) no interactivity

Although the site contains a collection of word games, it is not appealing or motivating for students. We would not recommend it.

Game 3: JClic

1) free internet game

2) not specified

3) fill in, puzzle, drag and drop. topic specific. irregular verbs

4) old, boring, not appealing but structured

5) only single words are tested, only one grammatical phenomenon

6) if you want to practice irregular verbs further, it might be helpful, but it is not very motivating (you an easily access the solutions)

7) no interactivity

Although the site deals with irregular verb exercises, it is not appealing or motivating for students. We would not recommend it.

Game 4: Game Zone

1) free online game

2) each game suggests a proper level of proficiency, site contains levels from beginner to upper intermediate

3) variety of grammar and vocabulary games

4) colourful, well-structured, appealing

5) you can cover different vocabulary and grammar topics

6) as additional task very advisable

7) low-level of interactivity

This collection of games is the best of the ones we analysed. It contains a variety of activities and language level suggestions. The games can easily be integrated into an English lesson and should mainly function as a repetition or additional task.

Far from just a pretty face I will now give you book worms some top tips on how to beat the ever tig

Far from just a pretty face I will now give you book worms some top tips on how to beat the ever tightening crunch. Most of these tips are derived from the classic saying that time is money…so spend you time on my tips to save money!

1. Febreeze your clothes and you can wear them for two days rather than one (unless white) – thus saving washing powder.

2. Go commando once in a while. it is not only liberating but saves your “good panties” for when you really need them.

3. Chewing gum can be used in place of brushing your teeth – this saves on the water bill.

4. Save energy – drink your own urine – its actually largely vitamin C that your body has decided you don’t need. Single? with rising food prices, even chivalry is feeling the crunch. save money by asking your date if they will get off with you FIRST.

5. When they say no, you’ve just eaten for another day! Can’t decide between PS3 and your lady? luckily technology is moving toward the male persuasion – 3rd gen consoles are wireless so cuddle her whilst fraggin’ the enemy online. fellas your lady will love the fact you’re multi-tasking.

clear or dirty? You decide

6. Cancel your Gym Membership – become an instructor yourself. when on the tube, sit one seat away from the “door seat”. Stand up at every stop, sitting down again when someone moves to take your seat this will give you both a great add laughing manically to strengthen your core muscles- you’ll soon have at least two seats to yourself.

7. Going out tonight? Dreading when its your round? buy the round but have a pint of water for yourself – meaning you can have beer later.

8. Meal ideas – combine some of your favourite foods to save on time and preperation. cheeseburgers and custard creams are nice.

9. haircuts can be expensive as can buying blades.suggest to your girlfriend that gillete is the best a man can get so from now on she needs to buy her own and stop poncing yours.

10. Topping up Pay-as-you-go deals can hurt the wallet. suggest to your other half to get an online phone. when she refuses tell her that her best mate has one and you know this cos she called you last night on it.

11. Big slogan t-shirts are pointless unless you have somethin’ constructive to say on them. So just don’t! this also saves energy for more important tasks such as drinking and telling the kebab man how much you love him.

12. Travelcards are expensive and ticket touts are drying up because of oyster cards. don’t top it up, simply claim you have and that your card is faulty and you’ve ordered a replacement.failing this, limp and request to use the gate.

13. The next time someone says “if i had a pound for everytime…” reply saying if you had a pound for everytime someone said that saying, we wouldn’t be having a credit crunch. Now you’re prepared for the worst!

November 16, 2009.

Dr. Cara Barker, a former nurse, now an author, lecturer, and shrink, recently interviewed a group of 40 children to find out what they think about their families and their world.

Dr. Barker said nobody ever asks kids what they think. She suspected they might have something to say.

Dr. Barker observed, “Beyond what Art Linkletter dubbed ‘Kids Say the Darndest Things,’ our kids also say the most beautiful things, the most relevant things, the most useful things.”

Here are some excerpts from her interviews. The children are answering the question, “What do you wish grown-ups knew?”

——————

Annie, age 5: “They need to send my new baby brother back where he came from. He cries too much. Then they could play with me and we’d all be happy. It’s a lot of work to be a big sister. No one told me about that part.”

Alexi, age 5: “Little kids need grandpas. Mine comes back to see me sometimes, but I can’t tell anyone.” (To ‘Why is that?’) “I told them the first time he came after the ‘funeraling,’ but they told me not to make things up. He really did come to see me and winked. It made me feel better. Big people should believe you. Maybe grandpa would come see them, too, and then they’d feel better.”

Andy, age 8: “My dad shouldn’t worry so much. I’m scared he’ll get sick. I don’t want to move, but it’s okay with me if my dad doesn’t have to worry about his job. My head hurts when he worries.”

Marlee, age 10: “Moms should know when their kids are lonely and sad, like the boy in ‘Where the Wild Things Are.’ Moms need to throw away their phones. Okay, that’s dumb. But they need to unplug it. Moms need to rest and not stress us out.”

Brad, age 14: “Dads should be more than tourists in our lives. They probably think we’re pushing them away. But we need to know they’re there when things get dicey. I wish they knew everything is moving too fast out there for us. I wish they knew they need to turn off the news. Like the Fort Hood massacre thing is terrible. Hearing it over and over is too much.”

Mary Jo, age 15: “I wish parents knew how hard we try to get good grades and make them happy. When I get a B, they don’t say anything, not like when I get As. I wish parents would just stop fighting. Or at least remember their kids are listening. There should be a ‘parent pill,’ where they could learn to chill. Oh, also, I think dads should be nicer to the mother, even if they are divorced. It makes us feel bad when they are mean to our moms.”

Jeremy, age 16: “I wish parents knew we worry about them. When they lose their job, we don’t need to go to the big-bucks places. It would be awesome to just sit and play board games, and have popcorn. That’s cheap if you make it yourself.”

——————

Something to say, indeed.

Dr. Barker submitted this personal story with her report.

“23 years ago, our daughter demonstrated that we, as parents, had much to learn. As my husband walked through the front door, with a bit of an uncharacteristic growl in his tone, our three-year-old, with her arm in a newly-acquired sling, watched Dad harrumph around the kitchen.

“She told the two of us, ‘I was so stupid! I slipped on the ice and did this to my arm!’

“As her dad tried to make amends, she patiently listened. She quietly beckoned him over to her. She threw her arms around his neck and said, ‘Daddy, do you think you can forgive yourself?’

“The incident has become part of our family lexicon, not only about self-forgiveness, but about how attuned our children are. We would do well to pay attention.”

By Akilah Russell

Les Miserable better take a bow, because there isn’t any drama like Duplate Drama! The UK’s very first interactive show famed for its innovative technique of getting the viewers to vote for the outcome, has decided to take this winning format to the TV and into the theatre.
Although still in the very early stages of production, the MTV BASE’s TV shows creators have set to keep their usual UK urban star studded theme, with talks of cameos, DJ sets, and even live performances! If that isn’t enough Dubplate for you then you can take part in the trademark voting, that will take place live during the show!

dubplate drama

Set to hit the stage at famous Hackney Empire in early 2011, and with no brand new television series of the smash hit show set to being made anymore, this could be your last chance to get your drama fix – you heard it here first – so it can’t be missed.

The idea of educating through entertainment is appealing, but it’s tricky to get the balance j

The idea of educating through entertainment is appealing, but it’s tricky to get the balance just right. As Terese has noted, Sesame Street got it right in the USA. The BBC got it right with The Archers in the UK. And it has worked in South Africa for Soul City – a multimedia health programme that I was privileged to work on in the nineties.

Soul City was the brainchild of a young doctor, Garth Japhet, who had seen babies dying unnecessarily of dehydration, abused women who were too ashamed to tell the doctor the real reasons for their injuries, and patients who had contracted HIV through ignorance. Believing that if information could be put across in an emotionally engaging way, people would be moved to change their behaviour, Japhet and his colleagues set up Soul City as a non-governmental organisation. At the heart of their programme was a television soap opera, with each episode containing a well-crafted health message skillfully embedded within a highly dramatic script. The TV show is backed up by newspaper inserts in national newspapers as well as radio shows in nine languages, and pamphlets and posters distributed via clinics around the country.

Today Soul City has over 35 million viewers in eight countries, and the organisation has gathered an impressive body of evidence through ongoing evaluations to show that the programme has caused behaviour change on a significant scale. Its founder, Japhet, recently won the USA-based Everett M. Rogers Award for Achievement in Entertainment Education.

What is it that has made Soul City such a successful example of the edutainment genre? There are at least four factors, I think.

Firstly, the Soul City developers go to great lengths to understand honestly the needs and views of the audience – many of whom will recognise their own stories in the serial. So for example, they dealt with the domestic violence story in a highly nuanced and sensitive way, showing Matlakala as a sophisticated professional woman (not the stereotype abused working-class woman), and showing how the drama is played out between both families, and not just the couple.

Secondly, Soul City uses a cross-disciplinary team to develop the content. I participated in workshops with social workers, medical doctors, police officers, counsellors and religious leaders, to develop the primary health messages. Educational people were in the minority at these workshops.

Thirdly, the Soul City television show has consistently used the best actors, directors and producers in the country. The show is worth watching in its own right, and the viewer engages with the “messages” primarily on an emotional level. (This is perhaps where the medium is at its most powerful.)

Finally, Soul City and their funders have a commitment to building in evaluation to every stage in every cycle of the programme. The evaluation carried out amongst Soul City’s viewers, listeners and readers is rigorous, and feedback obtained in this way is literally fed back into the programme to enhance further its impact.

So if anyone out there thinks education and entertainment don’t go together, I hope I have persuaded you otherwise!

Gabi Witthaus

The Single most dominant force in universal television since the teletubbies…with ratings that topple the networks finest soap operas…the worlds most glorified parade of the intellectually challenged and glory hungry people since the dawn of big brother…a voting turnout that political parties countrywide could only hope for.

Then the sugar frosted corn flake with the Lego haircut and polka dot dress who sings as well as a cat being neutered wins it.

Welcome to the VEX factor.

Lego head

So we watch… we vote in our droves to see someone “make it” only for them to be shoved into obscurity and disappear from the British tabloids until Xmas number one battle lines are drawn in the ever predictable “last year’s winner versus this year’s winner”. But how does it all happen so quickly? How does someone go from hero to zero SO quickly?

These “winners” are built up as these spectacular, instantly likeable and awesomely wholesome and clean cut (which lets face it, translates as boring more times than not) and butter not only wouldn’t melt, it wouldn’t pass their perfectly formed lips. Then they go on to bombard the magazine circuit, tabloids and the like promoting their brand new single that won’t matter in 9 months time.

The big day comes, the single is released and TADAA! It’s number one and getting more airtime and coverage than Katie Price’s midriff in winter, the merchandise documenting the story so far is flying off the shelf and they finally move out of their parents’ place to a medium sized flat in west London, pay three times as much as they should, and get invited to the opening of the recently refurbished local supermarket.

Then they fall from grace by either getting spectacularly drunk at a party they weren’t even invited too or by release that all “important” second single, which sold BADLY. Even worse than if Katie Price were to start writing for the Times on Sunday (although Cheryl was front cover a few months ago – I digress).

So off to America they go and why? To either attempt to crack it, rescue their career or simply disappear like Katie Price’s integrity. And Then? Well it’s onto the next. And this year, with the blandest, talentless and doddering collection of wannabes yet… Who’s got the VEX factor?

A few weeks ago finished one of the best TV programmes that I’ve seen lately. Unfortunately, I didn’t had the chance to follow the weekly broadcast, but I could catch up watching all the programmes online.

The name of the programme is ‘Tough guy or chicken’ and it’s been created and broadcasted by the BBC. It is a kind of reality show programme but without famous people or individuals aiming to be famous. And also, the main objective of the programme is to show different cultures and places in the world rather than showing a competition in between individuals, even though there’s a competition.

‘Five young brits are heading the bare world’, that’s the sentence that resumes the programme. They’ll face different challenges all around the world, and every challenge will require strong mental and physical skills. It’s the survival of the fittest, nor the strongest.

Eight episodes

The first stage is Ecuador and the local cowboys whom have to drive their flock of brave bulls at 4000 metres of altitude. Some of them won’t resist the tough duties they’re asked to do and, step by step, three of them will be out of this first competition.

Next is Siberia. They’ll have to do something similar like they did in Ecuador, but now they’re facing temperatures of -50ºC and driving flocks of reindeers. Again, they don’t only have to show physical skills but respect and adapt themselves to different lifestyles; they’ll have to eat animal brains in order to withstand the cold.

The third programme takes the guys to Mexico. They’ll have to dive into subterranean caves, completely blind and with the unique help of a rope. Orientation and keeping themselves concentrated at all times will be key points to pass this stage.

After Mexico they go to Brazilian Amazon. They’ll have to take the same physical, mental and spiritual tests as the youths of an aboriginal tribe take when they step from being a child to being a man. They’ll have to take natural drugs, hunt crocodiles, snakes and let themselves be beaten by carnivorous ants.

Then it comes Namibia. The desert. No water, no food, and very long walks in the search of them under a very hot sun. And at night, they’ll have to face cold and wild predators. They’ll be dehydrated, tired, and they’ll have to spend one night alone trying to make fire to frighten off the predators. Only one will achieve that.

Bahamas is one of the most amazing episodes. They’ll have to swim with sharks. Step by step they’ll learn how these animals behave and one of them will manage to hold one of them and to stroke one specimen.

Afterwards they go to Bangladesh. This is one of the most dangerous episodes, where a mistake can mean a sure, instantaneous and painful death. They’ll have to catch a deadly cobra with the help of one of the best snake charmers in the world.

Lastly, they go to Japan. They’ll have just six days to become Buddhist Yamabushi monks and take part in one of the toughest pilgrimages on the planet. Both physical and mental tiredness after four months of travelling and challenging will be a plus to the tests that the Japanese monks put them.

Why is it a good programme?

It is mainly because it’s aim is to show people different cultures and nature, but also because it gives a contrasted viewpoint between British (western) citizens and people from all over the world. And the challenge of the contenders is not only to pass the tests, but also to convince their local trainers that they understand they way of life that they’re learning and that they respect it by adapting themselves to it.

But also, the viewer can tell the huge differences and similarities that exist in between people who live in extreme climatic situations. In example, the Buddhist monk understands as a personal defeat that one of the guys cannot continue the challenge, and he openly starts to cry, because he knows that the British guy wants to continue but he’s not physically strong enough to do so.

So, if the programme is seen as something more than simple challenges for western civilised people, the viewer can learn and understand loads of different ways of thinking and living. It is full edutainment.

Though the episodes are no longer available to watch at the BBC Website, you can watch through this Japanese website. Don’t miss it!

Catatan Kecil Workshop SMPN 1 Karangrejo

Workshop Pendidikan

Sabtu (31/10/09), pagi-pagi sekali beberapa panitia tampak sibuk menyiapkan berbagai kebutuhan workshop.

So, teruslah berjuang para guru! Majulah terus pendidikan Indonesia! (Dien)

I didn’t really know what to expect when I agreed to this review. Partly because it was my first ever review, but also due to the mysteriously vague flyer which simply promised the ‘creation and presentation of a new performance called It Happened Here.’

I’m not going to lie – I was actually a little bit nervous. My experiences in journalism before now have been a bit more behind the scenes than this. But with precisely zero previous reviews under my belt and only limited interviewing experience, it was off to Hoxton Hall to shed some light on proceedings…

My first impressions of the place were good – grand old buildings like Hoxton Hall are usually a bit daunting, but it felt very welcoming. Inside, I was shown the Hall’s impressive looking main performance and rehearsal areas, before being introduced to the group of 12 young participants and director I had come to see.

I grabbed an interview with the director, Conan, and my first question was pretty simple: So what’s this all about exactly?

He told me he works with the participants to create a completely new production from scratch. The production is site-specific – so the storyline created involves elements of history, legends, and heritage specific to Hoxton Hall. The script writing, acting, music, and dancing are all done by the participants themselves – with a helping hand from experts such as Conan. The show is rehearsed every day in preparation for the final performance at the end of the week.

The participants themselves were great: ranging from 12-19 years old, they were the most eager, enthusiastic, passionate, and above all friendly bunch of people I have met in a long time. And that’s not because I hang around with miserable people – these kids were a seriously inspiring group whose love for what they were involved in was clear. They didn’t have a single bad word to say about the project; it was as if they had found they’re true calling in life despite their young age.

With the interviews over, I took some pictures of the performers in the Victorian outfits they will wear for the final performance. The costumes were just like the real thing, and added an authentic, professional feel to the whole production.

I noticed how well the artists – I think I can call them that – got on with each other, giving the place a really inclusive, friendly vibe. Conan was keen to point out that no-one is excluded – you don’t need any qualifications in drama or any experience doing this kind of thing to be welcomed here.

This was reflected in what the participants said – they told me how they felt like a real part of the group and had all made new friends since the start of the week.

I came away from the place feeling genuinely pleased that places like this exist. It’s great fun for the people involved, it’s something to do during half term, and is the kind of place where you can find a new interest or develop a new one in a friendly atmosphere.

I imagine we all are looking forward to the end of this recession and grow the top line again.

The National Association for Business Economics (NABE) reported yesterday that hiring and capital spending will increase over the next six months.

NABE reported in its Industry Survey that demand in Q3 2009 increased for the first time in five quarters, while the number of companies adding jobs doubled from July 2009 to October 2009.

The questions are: Are you ready for this? Do you have the tools to support the training of your new hires?

Corporations are recognizing the need to retain new employees and enable them to more quickly achieve productivity in their new capacity and environment. This has resulted in the adoption of formalized “onboarding” programs. In a research piece by the Aberdeen Group[1], results determined that the best-in-class onboarding enterprises realize a:

100% improved retention rates of new hires

60% reduced time-to-productivity for new hires

Moreover, best-in-class onboarding companies are 35% more likely to have a formal onboarding training program and twice as likely to clearly define the performance metrics assigned to their onboarding efforts. The Aberdeen Group further identifies that socialization is primary part of the onboarding efforts and that onboarding starts before a new hires first day on the job.

Collaborative learning, cost savings and an environmentally friendly education distribution system our eLearning 2.0 and mLearning platform provides are just some of the benefits of TOPYX®.

Giusto?

Thanks to all who participated in this first seminar of this series. I’d like to try to summarize the topic and presentations here.

Overview

This is a big topic, both timely and timeless, that tries to get at the heart of how we engage and enrich our minds. The seminar started with an overview of efforts to combine education and entertainment, from Sesame St to The Wire, interactive science museums to The Physics of Superheroes, from Homer’s Odessey to Joyce’s Ulysses to Fox’s 24. Arguments for blending education and entertainment were culled from Steven Johnson’s Everything Bad is Good for You and from Douglas Rushkoff’s notion of the “renaissance prospects” introduced by the internet.

New Tools

Marshal McLuhan writes in Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, that “We shape our tools, thereafter, our tools shape us” (Mike Roy notes that McLuhan likely based this on a statement Winston Churchill made in speech to the House of Commons, “We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us”). The new tools of particular interest here are the internet and applications that are designed for user contributions such as iTunes and YouTube. These tools have shaped us, encouraging us to be more collaborative, expressive, creative and connected. By making is easy to participate, tools like iTunes, YouTube, Wikipedia, Flickr and so on have begun to blend entertainment and education. As academic information professionals, we can help, particularly in the area of metadata, ensuring academic content is as discoverable as the machinima videos.

Why Digital Storytelling

Digital storytelling is a great example of how new tools shape us, both as “content” consumers and producers. Digital writing need not only include text, but can integrate images, audio and video. New media literacies are needed to understand how to use images and video not only to entertain and also educate. Examples include mash-up videos of social rituals with theoretical explanations, data-driven simulations to describe economic indicators, video essays and immersive environments. New pedagogical theories such as constructivism emphasize learning as an active social process and teaching as facilitating this process. Digital storytelling requires new ways to composing and evaluating stories (see: The 7 Elements of Storytelling). Instructional practices need to include training in tools and software applications, production equipment and file management and move beyond checklists of accuracy, currency and authority to teaching new rhetorical conventions such as sound tracks and camera angles.

As librarians and technologists, how can we/should we/do we want to participate in the education/entertainment trend?

“Technology is anything that was invented after you were born,” notes Alan Kay, a computer scientist (see: Kevin Kelly’s blog post, “Everything That Doesn’t Work Yet“). As adult librarians and technologists, many of the technologies that have shaped students have altered us much less (see: Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants), so that we are less fluent with the technology, while at the same time more objective, or at least able to bring a different perspective, a perspective informed by older technologies. This generationally-induced digital divide has opportunites and dangers. There is the opportunity to meet students where they are by using the same platforms they use for entertainment to educate them including Facebook, YouTube and blogs. The danger is that of the “creepy treehouse” effect on students who see these attempts by adults to join in on the fun as weird and perverse. There are ways to avoid these dangers. Set up online presences for institutions (instead of for older people with funny accents). Make participation in these “educational” virtual places optional. Educate students and faculty on how to create separate personal and professional profiles on social networking sites and how to use advanced settings to control who sees what.

Evaluating New Media

How do we evaluate these new tools and media, particularly as media such as gaming shift from being purely entertainment to offering real educational value. Unlike books, which traditionally have been reviewed by faculty, many new forms of media are evaluated by students themselves or by observing how students use a new tool or media. Evaluation of content is still very important of course, but so is determining how engaging a tool/media is, how easy it is to use, its design and aesthetics, how much it encourages creativity and critical thinking. Unfortunately, games and new media products too often use popularity as a primary means of evaluation and borrow from the movies rating systems that focus on content suitable to different age groups (AO for adult only, M for mature, T for teen and so on). The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has 32 difference descriptors for games that help consumers understand what distinguishes one game from another. However much less work has been done on game rating systems that focus on learning outomes.
