When I started this blog on september 21, I didn’t know it would grow to become this big a love in my life… I started it, because I had the urge to make beautiful things, especially with all the beautiful pictures of Rob. Sharing these was a natural thing to do and I’m overwhelmed by the sweet, hartwarming responses I get. Thank you all for being such a wonderfull extraordinary fandom: I’m truly impressed by everything I’ve experienced in the last months.

I don’t want to use too much space on this movie, but I saw it and here’s what I think.

Our heroin, Bella, only has two facial expressions: indifferent og bewildered. It’s kind of tiresome watching her for two hours never really smiling and never really showing anger og joy.

On the other hand her face is actually a pretty accurate portrait of the movie…

Story. What story? Well, this is the sequel to Twilight. In that movie Bella falls in love with the vampire Edward and he falls for her. In “New Moon” he takes off convinced his presence is dangerous for her. She flirts with (the much more interesting) Jacob, who’s a wolfman (- sort of thing), but still feels stronger for old Edward. The wolves hate the vampires and vice versa. That’s basically it.

So? I can see why kids love this. The actors are cute and the director pushes all the right “adolescence buttons”. My problem with it is that they’re not really going anywhere – there are no twists, no turns, no nothing. The plots that could have surprised are so obvious to the audience early on that we’re just waiting for the movie to catch up.

A pleasant surprise is Taylor Lautner playing Jacob Black. I find his presence and acting natural and refreshing. Hopefully this series can be a launch pad for him to greater and more challenging things (with his t-shirt on).

So in a filmidiots opinion – for the fanbase only.

Maybe this story worked better in the Twilight books, but am I the only one who finds the storyline terribly predictable? I’m only guessing but: They will get married, won’t they? And Bella will become a vampire, won’t she? And in the end, I’m pretty sure they’ll have a kid with special powers…

Who ever has read the books can tell us if I am right or wrong.

So guys, my actual plan was to give it a bit more time between the introduction of the “me reading Wide Awake”-series, and the next post on this issue. But yesterday I did something related to it that I definitely have to share with you, maybe even for self-psychological matters….

Wide Awake - "Only suitable for adults", and that even for several reasons!!

The ones of you who have read the fan-fiction Wide Awake as well, lovingly called the Cookie-Book by Soul and me, probably know what I’m talking about when I mention Edward’s song. For everyone else, I’m talking about the song “All The Pretty Little Horses”. Cookie-Bella always hums this song to her Edward before they go to sleep, because his mother used to do this when he was a small kid – anyway, that’s the short version of it. But well, it happened that I didn’t know this song, because no one ever sung it to me when I was young. So, one evening, my curiosity took the better of me and I looked it up on Youtube! So, get your own picture of the song and then read what I thought about it:

So, first thing that went through my mind after I saw that was: Omg, this song is definitely creepy!! And not just a bit creepy, I mean really creepy, like in a disturbing horror movie with scary little children singing it. Or at a run-down fair, where you can hear it in the background, as a proof that no one has had a good time here in a very long while. I don’t know why people should actually sing a song like this as a lullaby, but I have to say, by then I was very glad that it never occurred in my childhood, because seriously – it scared me!!

Then, it’s not just creepy like hell, it’s sad, too. Because, while killing some time doing some journalistic research for this blog, I stumbled across the fact that this song was originally sung by an Afro-American slave, who had to take care about her master’s child and so couldn’t be with her own kid. Look what she actually sang:

And as if that wouldn’t be enough scariness, while looking it up on Youtube, I came across loads and loads of dark tunes and videos, some really sad and some, yeah, downright disturbing. Like this one here.

I’m actually too scared to put it in this post so you have to click the link (if you dare to!!)^^ I came across it around two o’clock at night, alone in my dark room^^ So if you think it’s lame, congrats, then you’re probably a lot harder than I am, I just watched the first aahm… 30 secs?And to use Cookie-Edwards words: It scared the shit out of me!! And to finally come back to Edward with this: After a bit of research I’m not very surprised anymore by the fact that he is a completely freaky and twisted person in this story. Because apparently his mother used to work towards this ever since he was a kid, by singing creepy lullabies for him, every night^^ Poor Cookie-Edward.

On Saturday 12 December Northern Ballet Theatre’s Anniversary Gala Performance took place in front of a packed out auditorium at the Grand Theatre in Leeds.

Stars of the ballet world joined NBT dancers on stage to celebrate the Company’s 40th birthday and together created a truly enchanting evening.

The evening featured artists from the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert Dance Company and Phoenix Dance Theatre. Dancers from Ballet Du Rhin, Zurich Ballet and Les Ballets de Monte Carlo travelled to the UK especially to perform at the Gala.

NBT performed the world première of a short dance created especially for the anniversary by Gillian Lynne, respected choreographer of Cats, Phantom of the Opera, and NBT’s own signature work A Simple Man.

NBT soloist Victoria Sibson performed Ossein, a short dance choreographed by Wayne McGregor, resident artist of the Royal Opera House and Artistic Director of Random Dance Company.

Another highlight of the evening was David Nixon’s breathtaking new work Powerhouse Rhumba: “a sensational showcase” (The Times) which he created especially for the performance.

The Anniversary Gala was performed in aid of the momentum capital fundraising campaign for NBT and Phoenix Dance Theatre’s new purpose-built home in central Leeds. It was attended by over 14,000 people including NBT’s Patron, HRH The Earl of Wessex, and raised in the region of £60k.

• On a screen nearby, you can catch Meryl Streep playing Jane in It’s Complicated.  John Krasinski plays her son, Harley.  There’s also an Agness (played by Lake Bell) and an Annalise (played by Blanchard Ryan) among the cast;
• Let’s assume that the name Neytiri from Avatar won’t catch on.  But there is a Trudy, played by Michelle Rodriguez;
• The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – Heath Ledger’s last film – features a Valentina;
• Invictus is poised to do well during award season.  The biopic could give a boost to Nelson, but what about François?

• Over at Legit Babe Names, Sebastiane covered Seija.  Apparently she’s the Finnish equivalent of Linda – both were big in the 1940s.  She also covered Teiksma, a Latvian name meaning fable or legend.  Of course, in the US these days, you’re more likely to meet a Fable;
• Over at Celebrity Baby Blog, Alyson Hannigan confirmed that Satyana comes from the Sanskrit for truth.  She mentioned that they call her Sati for short, which makes me think of Erik Satie;
• For Real Baby Names spotted a boy called Fate Whisper. If girls can be Destiny, Faith and Echo, I suppose a boy could be named Fate or Whisper.  But both?  Yikes;
• For Real also spotted a Paydyn, officially the strangest respelling of Payton/Peyton yet.  And a Danika Skyy.  Love Danika. Sky and Skye are one thing, but Skyy?  Is vodka;
• Bewildertrix spotted a Tiana.  Is it the Frog Effect already?  And Oliver Ziggy Bear.  Which is just fabulously strange;
• Namberry has ballerina names, just in time for the Nutcracker.  If you’re called Ghislaine or Violetta, surely you’ll grow up pencil slim and infinitely graceful;
• This post over at Swistle is fascinating. The mom-to-be has three stepdaughters – Airyn Dakotah, Brylee Brookelyn and Madesyn Tayler - plus three of her own - Frances Rosaline, Russell Stacey and Marjory “Midge” Kate.  Needless to say, the couple is stuck trying to compromise on a name that satisfies both of their styles;
• Which brings us to the controversy of the week.  If you haven’t read Jill’s guest post at Namberry on Yooneek Names, check it out – and make sure to click on the poll results.  With nearly 600 votes, an overwhelming 92% of Namberryites hate, hate, hate ‘em.  Jill did a great job with a difficult topic.

Lastly, a few starbabies arrived this past week.  Besides Benjamin Brady and Mason Dash Disick, there’s also:

• New Kids on the Block’s Joey McIntyre welcomed a son, Rhys Edward, a little brother for Griffin Thomas.  He and wife Barrett have a nice naming style;
• Soap stars Arianne Zucker & Kyle Lowder welcomed daughter Isabella.

Since I’m stuck indoors – when the news showcases the record-setting snow in the nation’s capital, that would be what has us housebound – I’ve started looking at the year-end stats early.  It’s an interesting list.  With a little bit of luck – or another foot or so of snow – I’ll post it just after Christmas.

Sure, Twilight is a big deal.

But can we really credit Stephenie Meyer’s paranormal romance series with the rise of Isabella?  An article in Australia’s Herald-Sun attributes Isabella’s increasing popularity down under to the series.  Turns out the paper was just parroting the results reported by BabyCentre Australia.

I don’t buy it.

Don’t get me wrong.  I think Twilight names will rise.  The four books in the series were all New York Times bestsellers, and the movies have done well at the box office.

And yet, attributing Isabella’s popularity to the series doesn’t seem right.

Isabella was already a Top Ten name when Twilight was published in 2005.  In the US, Isabella charted at #6 in ‘05, up one spot from #7 in ‘04.  As of 2007, she’d risen to #2 and stayed there in 2008 – the year the movie was released.

The character is almost exclusively referred to as Bella in the books.  In 2005, Bella stood at #208 in the US.  By 2008, she’d risen to #122.  There might be a smidge of Twilight-effect at work there, but Bella probably would’ve gained anyhow.  Related names – think Top 50 choices Ella and Gabriella – have been on the upswing in recent years.

While plenty of expectant moms – and probably a few dads – have certainly read Twilight, Meyer’s core audience is probably some years away from any real baby-naming.  Which reminds me, BabyCentre’s Top Name lists only reflect data reported to BabyCentre – not official government stats.

If we look back to the 1990s, we can watch Isabella’s rediscovery.  In 1990, she re-entered the US Top 1000 for the first time in more than four decades at #895.  In 1992, Tom Cruise and Australia’s Nicole Kidman bestowed the name on their daughter and the name jumped to #488.  Plenty of celebs followed suit.  Matt Damon used the name in 2006.

Lastly, from JLo to Dora, choices with Latin flair have been embraced by plenty of parents – not just those with Spanish roots.

What I’m watching isn’t the rise of Isabella, but the trends for Edward.  He fell to an all-time low of #148 as of 2008.  But he could be due for a reversal.  Could a dashing vampire help Edward shed the Eddie Munster image and reclaim his regal vibe?

So far – at least in the US – it isn’t happening.  But something tells me that parents who love the classics, but worry that William and James are too common might just rediscover Edward.

This is supposed to be the part where I apologize for not only shirking my duties as the writer of Kampfer Watch, but for completely ignoring The Absolution for well over a few months. Unfortunately I don’t really feel like anyone cares, so I’ll just give you this. Merry Christmas!
