So I have begun the long and difficult journey of reading my first work by Jonathan Edwards. If I have learned anything by now it is this: he is a much smarter man than me. Challenging as his writing may be however, I cannot adequately describe the richness in which he composes his thoughts.

For the past few weeks I have been narrowing down the particular difficiencies in my own life and struggled to put it into words. Today, as I was reading through The Religious Affections by Edwards, he simply hit the nail on the head. Here is what this great American pastor and theologian had to say,

“That religion which God requires, and will accept, does not consist in weak, dull, and lifeless wishes, raising us but a little above a state of indifference: God, in his word, greatly insists upon it, that we be good in earnest, “fervent in spirit,” and our hearts vigorously engaged in religion…”

That is where I have been; a little above a state of indifference! As I read these words today I became vividly aware of how weak my affections for God really are. Sure, I would have admitted there was room for improvement before, but this feeling is something altogether different.

I am incredibly excited about the discoveries awaiting me in the remaining pages of this book. In one chapter he has managed to summerize my experiences of the past three years with greater clarity than I could have ever imagined.

Having read this today I reminded of one of my favorite quotes of all time by Charles Spurgeon,

“The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who will not use the thoughts of other men’s brains, proves that he has no brains of his own.”

Un futuro candidato alla presidenza, John Edwards, il Giovedi proposto di ridurre i costi di assistenza sanitaria da parte del processo di revisione dei brevetti per i farmaci che richiedono innovazione e le compagnie di assicurazione sanitaria di spendere almeno il 85 per cento dei loro premi per la cura dei pazienti.

Egli ha anche detto che il suo piano dovrebbe imporre alle società di assicurazione sanitaria di spendere almeno il 85 per cento dei premi che si raccolgono sulla cura del paziente, aggiungendo che il 30per cento dei premi assicurativi attualmente vanno verso le spese amministrative e di profitto. Circa 47 milioni di persone attualmente privi di assicurazione sanitaria negli Stati UnitiGli Stati.

Edwards ha dovuto affrontare le critiche per il suo piano di assistenza sanitaria universale, in parte perché sarebbe aumentare le tasse e potrebbe costare 90 miliardi dollari a 120 miliardi dollari.

Edwards ha dichiarato la sua proposta di assistenza sanitaria farebbe risparmiare le famiglie fino a 2.500 dollari l'anno.

Edwards ha detto Detroit, dove General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. e DaimlerChrysler AG Chrysler Group spendere 16 miliardi dollari l'anno sui costi sanitari e sono tenuti a pagare 114 miliardi dollari in benefici pensionato futuro, èindicativi di disturbi sanitari sentito a livello nazionale.

Edwards in precedenza ha proposto che i datori di lavoro è tenuto a fornire una copertura sanitaria per i lavoratori o versare in un fondo statale a sostegno di assicurazione e di consentireai lavoratori di scegliere tra i piani.

Un rivale democratico candidato alla presidenza, il senatore dell'Illinois Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record), ha proposto di fornire assistenza sanitaria a milioni di americani e più accessibili di assicurazione medica, finanziata da un aumento della tassa sui ricchi.

Is Christianity reasonable? How many of the “truths of Christianity” should we be able to find “in nature” or to be “reasonable”? Is Christianity verified through reason or in nature? These were questions pressed upon the Christian faith especially during the Enlightenment. Josh Moody, in his Jonathan Edwards and the Enlightenment: Knowing the Presence of God, summarizes how Jonathan Edwards, one whose ministry existed in the midst of the Enlightenment’s heyday, addressed these questions (pp 121-22):

Can . . . a high view of Revelation be reconciled with reason? For Edwards, it all depended on the beginning. The dominant picture of Edwards’ understanding of the relationship of reason and revelation is not the . . . one of separate location, but of appropriate order. Revelation comes first. Primary place in Edwards’ mental authority structure was always given to revelation.

On this matter Edwards makes his most vigorous departure from [John] Locke. He disagrees with him that reason can teach us true religion, which he feels is but a “wild fancy,” because history shows true religion began with revelation not reason; reason before revelation went “very wrong.”* The reason which concerns Edwards is “thinking God’s thoughts after him,” reasoning after revelation. Truth “now demonstrable by reason” could never be “found out before” revelation.** Once things have been revealed it seems “as if we could easily arrive at a certainty of them if we never had had a revelation of them.” But to see a truth is reasonable “after we have been told of it” is one thing; it is “another to find out . . . by mere reason.”*** Thus, “The light of nature teaches that Religion, that is necessary to continue in the Favour of the God that made us; But it cannot teach us that Religion, that is necessary to our being restored to the Favour of God, after we have forfeited it.”****
