Como mostrado nos posts anteriores, instalei o UNR 9.10 no meu Eee PC 701, mostrei as teclas de função que funcionavam e removi alguns programas que eu não uso. Agora vou mostrar os aplicativos que mais utilizo e seus repositórios.

UbuntuTweak

Este nunca falta em nenhuma das minhas instalações do Ubuntu. Com ele tenho acesso fácil a algumas configurações do sistema, tais como, limpeza de pacotes, do cache de imagens, instalação de aplicativos de terceiros etc.

Para instalar basta adicionar o repositório abaixo:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

Para autenticar o repositório faz-se necessário a importação da chave que autentica o repositório. Para isto basta digitar o comando abaixo no terminal:

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com FE85409EEAB40ECCB65740816AF0E1940624A220

Pronto, agora é só atualizar os repositórios e instalar o pacote ubuntu-tweak.

SMPlayer

O SMPlayer é, atualmente, meu player de áudio e vídeo favorito, e está disponível tanto para Windows quanto para Linux. Na verdade o SMPlayer é um front-end para o excelente MPlayer. O SMPlayer roda vários formatos de arquivo sem a necessidade de instalação de codecs separadamente, pois os mesmos já vem em sua instalação.

Para instalar a versão mais recente em desenvolvimento, adicione o repositório abaixo:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/rvm/smplayer/ubuntu karmic main

E a sua chave de autenticação:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys E4A4F4F4

Basta agora atualizar os repositórios e instalar o pacote smplayer.

MPlayer

Aproveitando o ensejo, já que instalo o SMPlayer, instalo também o MPlayer feito por terceiros, que sempre se mantém mais atualizado do que a versão disponível nos repositórios oficiais do Ubuntu.

Para instalar basta adicionar o repositório abaixo:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/rvm/mplayer/ubuntu karmic main

E a chave de autenticação:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 03E02400

Atualize os repositórios e se já estiver com o mplayer instalado, basta atualizar, senão instale o pacote mplayer. Claro que se você instalou o SMPlayer antes, o MPlayer já estará instalado .

Medibuntu

O Medibuntu é um repositório de pacotes que normalmente não pode ser distribuído com o Ubuntu devido a motivos legais (como copyright e afins). Basicamente, ele contém pacotes de codecs de áudio e vídeo.

Para instalar, basta digitar os comandos abaixo, que já adicionarão o repositório e a chave de autenticação:

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
sudo apt-get -q update
sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring
sudo apt-get -q update

E, no final, instalar os pacotes desejados.

Chromium

Quem não conhece ou não ouviu falar do Google Chrome? Pois bem, para o Linux temos o Chromium (para quem não sabe, o Google Chrome é uma compilação do Chromium para Windows). É um browser leve, rápido e que, pelo menos para mim, tem disputado utilização com o Firefox. Para instalar o Chromium, adicione o repositório abaixo:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/chromium-daily/ppa/ubuntu karmic main

E a chave de autenticação:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 4E5E17B5

Atualize e agora é só instalar o chromium-browser.

Eu mesmo nunca instalo os repositórios dos fontes do programas, mas se você gosta de fazê-lo basta visitar o site do aplicativo que lá você encontrará os links para os repositórios.

Ah, e no final das contas, não esquecer de instalar o pacote ubuntu-restricted-extras.

You thought it was over, didn’t you? From windows to SuSe, to EasyPeasy, I’ve been trying to find which OS suits me best for my little friend and now, I’m back with one more experiment: eeebuntu!

I liked EasyPeasy. It was fast, neat looking and most of all it did the job, save for one little thing. Network Manager. Now, I have absolutely no idea why it happened, but if it would lose a connection, it faced difficulties reconnecting to a network and some times it would require a reboot. Depending on where I was, this was not necessairily a problem, but anyway it was not a feature I chose to have, right?

I needed to have my eeePc working, so I went back to using Suse. Suse has a very nice design, lots of eye-candy and functionality, but it is not suited for 900MHz and 1 GB of RAM on an SSD. It was terribly slow. Another distro please!

After some digging around, I came across this useful article where Pale Heretic lists 5 linux distros suitable for a netbook. Having already tried two of them, Suse and easy peasy, I had three more alternatives: Mandriva, Fedora and eeeBuntu. The three e’s in eeeBuntu, made my dillema pretty clear. I went for eeeBuntu.

When you visit eeebuntu.org, you are greeted with a set of three options, as to which flavour of eeebuntu you want to install. Normally one would choose NBR, which features a design similar to that of easy peasy. I wanted something that looks more like a “real” desktop so I chose the standard version. There’s also a base version, with little extras, so you can add as many programs you want yourself.

I downloaded the iso and made sure the MD5 was correct. Since we are talking about an OS, you want to make sure you don’t have a corrupted download! There are many programms that calculate MD5 sums, so google away!

You now have two options to install eeebuntu on the eeePc. 1) Burn the ISO on a disk and find an external drive. 2) Transfer the ISO on a USB stick.

Since I do not have an external DVD-ROM drive, I had to choose the second option. Thankfully, there’s UNetbootin, a tiny programm that transfers a Linux Distribution onto a USB drive! Neat!

You want to choose the second option and point to the right letter for your USB. No need to say that all data you might have on the drive will be lost, right? When the procedure is over, you only need to plug the USB drive, reboot your eeePC and boot from the USB. What you have on your screen now, is a Live Version of eeebuntu, which means, nothing was changed on your hard drive. You can play a little bit with it, see if it suits you and if you decide to do so, just double click on the install icon on the desktop.

The installation procedure was easy as abc, I just had to choose the “Use Entire Disk” option and that was all. Everything worked out of the box, I only had to tweek some appearance settings, desktop wallpaper and the like.

I am very satisfied with my new distro. It is fast, It has many programms preinstalled and I like the design. It comes with Gnome desktop, but I am sure one can intall KDE easily enough. I think I might be sticking with this one for a while

Após a instalação do Ubuntu em meu Eee PC, resolvi fazer os testes das teclas de função, atualizar o sistema e remover alguns pacotes que, para mim, não são necessários.

Teste das teclas de funções do Eee

• Fn+F1 – suspender o Eee – funciona perfeitamente;
• Fn+F2 – liga/desliga o Wi-Fi – funciona muito bem, minha rede também foi detectada de primeira;
• Fn+F3 e Fn+F4 – diminui/aumenta o brilho da tela – funcionam perfeitamente;
• Fn+F5 – alterna entre a tela Eee/monitor externo – testei somente com um monitor de 19″ que tenho, ao se clicar a primeira vez a tela ficou aparecendo nas duas telas, e, ao se clicar novamente, desligou o monitor externo;
• Fn+F6 – não funcionou;
• Fn+F7 – ativa/desativa o som – funciona perfeitamente;
• Fn+F8 e Fn+F9 – diminui/aumenta o volume do som – funcionam perfeitamente.

Primeira atualização do sistema

Depois de testar as teclas, procedi para a atualização do sistema. Mandei verificar pelas atualizações e instalei todas que apareceram. A quantidade de pacotes e o tamanho a ser baixado podem ser vistos na tela abaixo:

Assim que a atualização terminou recebi um erro que mostro abaixo.

Reiniciei o Eee e voltou ao normal. Atualizei também os pacotes de linguagem:

Desistalando pacotes não utilizados

Para economizar alguns megabytes, resolvi desinstalar pacotes que não utilizarei. São eles: o Transmission (cliente de torrent); o Evolution (cliente de e-mail); o Orca (para acessibilidade); e o pacote de jogos do Gnome.

Der erste große Netbook-Wurf war der Eee PC. Weil der in zweistelliger Millionenauflage gekauft wurde, wendet sich die Nachrüstplatine “Active SaberTooth S4 SATA Mini PCIe SSD” in erster Linie an die Eee-Modelle 900, 900A, 901 und 1000.
Dank sequentieller Lese-Algorithmen komme das Flashlaufwerk auf interne Datenübertragungsraten von bis zu 130 MB/s. Das sollte im täglichen Netbook-Betrieb durchaus für spürbaren Tempozuwachs reichen.
Das Nachrüstlaufwerk mit dem ach so griffigen Namen gibt es wahlweise in den Kapazitäten 16, 32 sowie 64 GByte und kostet dabei von knapp 50 bis rund 140 Dollar. Eine durchaus erschwingliche Tuningmaßnahme. [Ralf]

Ok, so I’ve decided to live a bit more Green

I’ve gotten to the stage where I wonder why I’m suddenly eating more junk food, driving my car more, and just generally being a consumer, rather than a producer. I look at my bedroom and see it covered with clothes I’ve never worn, books I’ve never read and a general assortment of crap I don’t need, really want, or is anyway remotely useful to my daily life. My consumerist tendencies also mean that I barely save any of the money I earn, and take 30 minute showers in the middle of a drought.

Things have to change here. It’s time to start living with a bit more consideration for the planet, and my bank balance.

Hopefully along the way, I’ll learn something.

Car

I have a 1989 Toyota Cressida, and I love it, but it does cost me money to run and keep well-maintained, and while Myka is a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly than a lot of the petrol-guzzlers on the road, it still leaves quite the environmental footprint.

Living in the outer suburbs of Melbourne makes it difficult to catch public transport, with buses late and trains often cancelled without notice. Working at night also means risking life and limb on one of the most dangerous train lines in Melbourne early in the morning and late at night.

I haven’t been on a push bike in years, and my adventures lately with push bike riders getting knocked down by cars and trucks really makes me dread getting on a bike without designated bike lanes and at night.

Where possible, my goal is to use public transport, walk or carpool, especially for the short trips down the shops and the train station. It’ll reduce the wear on my car, the damage to the environment, and the risk of an accident.

Food.

I started really think about how much I spend on food today. My meals at work are rarely under the $10 each mark for what’s essentially tasteless and fatty foods full of sugar. The only food available within walking distance at 2.30am happens to be the local 24hr convenience store with it’s dazzling array of healthy options…… or not.

Starting with packing my lunch (and remembering to take it with me, or, failing that, having something in my desk instead) should save me about half the monetary cost, and about have the dietary cost. It also means I can be more lazy and not have to leave the building to walk down for a sausage roll.

My other goal is not to throw out as much food as I do now, by putting leftovers in the freezer and using slightly damaged fruit and veggies in casseroles and salads. Groups like Food, not Bombs and many freegans go hunting in those great bin rubbish bins that the supermarkets have and use the food thrown out in those to eat. And I can see why, with Australians currently spending 6 Billion on food, and throwing out about 1 Billion dollars of it annually.

I’m not at the stage of “Dumpster Diving” for my dinner, but I intend to grow a lot of my own food, making it a damn site better for the environment. Most of the fruit and veg in the supermarket is trucked thousands of kilometres from Queensland, and there’s no real guarantee of any food being “organic” unless you’ve grown it yourself.

In the garden.

Someone mentioned to me the other day that in times of financial crisis, spending on fast food goes up (along with hem lines apparently). Funny thing is, food is one thing that doesn’t have to be expensive. Growing veggies from seed is one such way to save money, help the environment, and teach the kids about how things grow.

I germinated veggies and herbs in a storage container in the backyard to plant into the veggie patch. It started out as an experiment to see if I really could grow things in one of those storage containers, and as it turns out, it’s dead easy!

I set myself a limit of $50AUD to start up, and using a 40L storage container, a bag of cheap potting mix, a water saving peat moss brick, and seven packs of seeds (Basil, cucumbers, capsicums, eggplants, radishes, pak choi and parsley), managed to keep it all around the $35 mark, although I already have a lot of gardening stuff at home, including a ready supply of rain water, a worm farm, and a compost bin.

All I did was soak the peat moss in a bucket of water, mixed it in with the potting soil in the container, planted the seeds in it, and shut the lid, leaving it in full sun. The heat from the sun, and the water that had soaked into the peat moss made the container incredibly humid, keeping the water trapped inside the container and making it ideal for germinating seeds. In 3 days I had cucumbers and basil poking up green bits, and the other plants weren’t too far behind (I know it was 3 days, because I was on 3 night shifts that week, and slept while the sun was up!).

About 10 days ago I planted the radishes, and I planted out the eggplants and the cucumbers about 2 days ago, which I’ve mulched heavily with sugar cane mulch. They are doing very well in the veggie patch.

This started as an inexpensive little experiment to see what I could grow in a box has yielded far better results than I could have hoped for! I’m pretty damn proud of the effort (or lack thereof) I’ve put into it. It’s been so successful, I started another box last week with Thai Basil, Lettuce and what was a packet of unmarked seeds. These mystery seeds have turned out to be more cucumbers.

By the way, the fertiliser I use on the plants is roughly 30mL of of seaweed or carp emulsion and the same of worm farm water (“worm juice!”) in a watering can, applied liberally once every 2 weeks. With the Sugar Cane mulch, this does wonders.

Computer

I currently own 2 computers. One is a Linux based 7 inch Eee PC (The Black Box) I go travelling with, and my other computer is a Ubuntu desktop (The Frankenputer) that I use as my everyday computer. For the geeks out there, Black Box runs on a Debian/Xandros hybrid Asus designed, while The Frankenputer is currently running Ubuntu 9.04 (old I know, I’ll be updating to Karmic Koala in the next few days). I bought Black Box on sale, and The Frankenputer was a mates that he was giving away a few days ago.

The Eee PC isn’t too bad environmentally. Being only 7-inches, it’s damage to the environment is minimal. And it pretty much runs on battery power when I use it. The Frankenputer is another story. With it’s CRT monitor, it takes up a lot of space and energy. That said, CRT monitors do use less energy than the flatscreen LCD monitors on the market by a considerable amount.

I do want a flatscreen monitor in my room for the space-saving factor, but I plan to buy the most friendly one I can find, and to hit the power switch when I’m not using it, reducing any energy wastage.

Turning off computer monitors also means saving a considerable amount of money on the energy bill….

I should have some more ideas on what I can do to save money and be more environmentally green in the next few days, til then…

Last weekend I installed Windows 7 on my Asus 1000HE netbook PC. I had planned to use the Windows Easy Transfer wizard to transfer my settings and files from the Windows XP installation on this netbook to Windows 7, but I have decided to not bother with the transfer, essentially starting from scratch.

I can tell you that I very much like Windows 7 over Windows XP, and I am finding the performance under Windows 7 to be very snappy. One of my main concerns has been with battery life, as I have been very happy with the battery life on this netbook under Windows XP. So far I have not noticed a decrease in battery life, which I think is largely due to the fact that the Asus Super Hybrid Engine, which controls the processor speed to optimize power consumption, runs just fine under Windows 7.

Zostałem bardzo miło zakoczony odpowiednią wydajnością animacji flash w nowym ubu. Wreszcie można normalnie używac netbooka. Zainstalowałem desktopowe wydanie, jednak używam remixowego interfejsu. Przęglądarka chromium okazała się wielkim plusem. ^^ Tylko empathy mi nie przypadł… Brak możliwości importu kontaktów gadu z serwera odrazu go skreśla. Podsumowując – na TAK dla 9.10. xD

Dziś przypadkiem odkryłem nieznany mi wcześniej potencjał pewnego zdjęcia. Oto wynik jego urzeczywistnienia.

Bom, somente hoje, foi que eu consegui instalar a versão 9.10 do Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) em meu Eee. Eu estava com a versão 9.04 instalada e funcionando perfeitamente, mas ao tentar atualizar para a versão 9.10, recebi avisos que não possuía espaço para atualizar de versão. Então, para não perder tanto tempo, e como meu Eee não tinha quase nada instalado nele, resolvi fazer a instalação do zero.

Comecei baixando a iso do UNR disponível no site do Ubuntu, e a partir do meu notebook, que já tem o Ubuntu 9.10, criei uma pendrive com o UNR 9.10, utilizando para isso a ferramenta Criador de disco USB inicializável do Ubuntu (Sistema->Administração->Criador de disco USB inicializável).

Com a pendrive já preparada, parti para a instalação no Eee. Dando um boot no Eee, com a pendrive na USB e pressionando a tecla Esc, escolhi a opção de testar o sistema sem instalar nada. Após a carga inicial, o sistema foi carregado e funcionou normalmente.

O passo seguinte foi clicar no ícone Instalar LANÇAMENTO. Na tela que apareceu escolhi a opção do idioma para o processo de instalação.

Cliquei em Avançar e na tela seguinte escolhi a Região (Brasil) e a zona do fuso horário (Brasil(São Paulo)).

Cliquei em Avançar e na próxima tela escolhi o layout do teclado. No caso do meu Eee, que não possui teclado ABNT, escolhi USA e USA – Alternative international (former us_intl).

Feita a escolha do layout do teclado, cliquei em Avançar e a tela de opção de particionamento do disco para a instalação do sistema aparecerá.

Escolhi a opção de formatação manual e, como meu disco já tinha instalado o Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04, a partição já estava do jeito que eu desejava: uma partição inteira para o sistema em ext2, sem partição de swap. Então, a única coisa que precisei fazer foi formatar a partição.

Ao se clicar em Avançar, uma mensagem aparece informando que não foi escolhida uma partição de swap para o sistema. Desconsiderei a mensagem, clicando em Continuar, e preenchi o formulário da tela que aparece a seguir.

Preenchendo-se os campos necessários, cliquei em Avançar, que a próxima tela surge para confirmação das escolhas feitas e começar o processo de instalação. Cliquei em Instalar.

O processo de instalação tem início e, ao término, uma tela solicitando o reinício irá aparecer.

Após o reinício o sistema estará funcionando perfeitamente bem . No próximo post, vamos testar as teclas de funções (Fn) e adicionar os repositórios de aplicativos que mais uso.

Heute berichtet Spiegel Online Netzwelt mal wieder über Netbooks. Die kleinen Freudenbringer seien leistungsschwach, aber trotzdem beliebt. Denn:

“Die Standard-Konfiguration bestand aus einem 1,6-GHz-Prozessor, einer 160-GB-Festplatte, einem Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher und Windows XP. Abstriche musste man vor allem bei der Grafikleistung machen. Weder für aufwendige Spiele noch für Filme taugten die Leichtgewichte wirklich.”

Ich selbst, stolzer Besitzer eines EEE-PC 1000H, habe mittlerweile 2 GB RAM und lasse Windows 7 Home Premium erfolgreich laufen (oder besser: “traben”. Und übrigens: Der Akku hält mit Windows 7 noch ein Weilchen länger . Und Filme hab ich auf langen Zugfahrten auch schon geschaut. Aber sind wir doch mal ehrlich: Der Reiz eines Netbooks ist doch gerade seine Kompaktheit und der Fähigkeit, trotzdem für Aufgaben wie Internet oder Office gut geigent zu sein. Wer will unterwegs schon den neuesten 3D Shooter am Netbook zocken? Also wenn ich im Zug unterwegs bin sehe ich viele Notebook- oder Netbooknutzer, von denen daddelt niemand. Will man ja auch nicht.

Aber trotzdem: Laut Spiegel Online sind 22 Prozent aller in Deutschland verkauften Computer Netbooks. Und es ist sogar noch Besserung in Sicht. Die neuen Netbooks haben größere Displays (11,6 Zoll, d.h. dann 1366 x 768 Pixel statt der 10-Zoll-üblichen 1024 x 600 Pixel, die das Display darstellt!), mehr Speicher und eine schnellere CPU. Leider kostet der Spaß dann auch ein bißchen mehr – die Preise reichen bei ca. 500 Euro dann locker an die von vollwertigen Laptops heran. Als Beispiele sind hier das MSI Wind U230, das Samsung N510 (2. Link, 3. Link) oder auch der neue EEE-PC 1201N zu nennen.

Also: Die Entwicklung läuft weiter und mein nächstes Netbook wird dann sicher so ein knapp 12 Zoll großes Display haben. Heimlich träume ich ja sowieso von einem Apple Netbook (Spiegel Online berichtete).

With Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) out, the Eeebuntu team has begun work on Eeebuntu 4.0. I am very excited for this release which is due to come out some time in December maybe. For sure I’ll be picking up the LXDE Base release of Eeebuntu 4.0 and putting it on my 2G Surf. I’ll probably even post a how-to guide and give a few pointers on common issues I ran across. After giving Sanguine Salamander, Münchhausen-by-Proxy Mantis, Persevering Pygmy Wasp, Arthritic Albatross, and Gyrating Giraffe a try, I’m sure Karmic Koala will be a great addition to the Ubuntu family.

All joking aside, I’ve come to really enjoy the Eeebuntu Base release. It has (almost) exactly what I need and does it while using up very few resources when there aren’t that many to start with. Maybe this time we’ll get full-screen flash? Er, let’s not dream too high. Bug fixes are so totally boring! But did you know it boots in, like, 10 seconds?! Like, no way!

As an eight year old I was first introduced to the world of PC gaming by my oldest brother who was studying computer engineering at university.

One year he brought home a computer he’d built and into our lives came Test Drive and Alley Cat.

The years passed, the computers changed and I met Jill of the Jungle (hmm now I know where my obsession with Lara Croft started!), Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and a myriad of 64-bit goodness.

I’m incredibly excited at the thought of playing all my favourites again on my Eee PC, first stop Wolf 3D.
