In all seriousness, anyone out there know how to install Eeebuntu without involving a shaman or sacrificing a goat? Because I’m out of ideas.*

*Not exactly – I haven’t yet tried to do it from a bootable DVD, largely because I don’t have an external DVD drive. I may go buy one tomorrow and give it a shot.

Confirmando a tendência de monitores com mais de 600 linhas em netbooks, a Asus está lançando o Eee PC 1005HR, com um monitor de 10,1 polegadas de resolução 1366 x 768, o que é ótimo. Por enquanto foi lançado somente no Japão.

Also habe ich mir die neue Live CD mit KDE vom neuen OpenSuse 11.2 runtergeladen und Installiert….

….. Es läuft =)

Although my notebook of choice (and primary computer) is my MacBook Air, I sometimes prefer something smaller and cheaper to hit the road with… Enter the netbook!

I’ve owned (and hacked) several over the years, from the original Asus 701 (Eee) to the Toshiba NB205 (Mini), which I just retired. This time around I wanted something with better performance and a larger screen. Based on my past experience using (and modding) the Acer Aspire One, I decided to purchase a sapphire blue Acer Aspire 1410-2801 with an Intel Celeron SU2300 dual-core CULV processor and an 11.6″ screen.

It’s just semantics, but while being thin, light, and affordable, the Aspire 1410 is not marketed as a netbook. That’s fine by me, because I think current netbooks are too big and bloated – 11.6″ screens and full keyboards are great but how about smaller packaging? To me, older netbooks with 9″ screens are still the ideal in terms of system size and weight.

The Aspire 1410 is missing Bluetooth, but I’ve picked up the appropriate module, which I’ll install soon. In the meantime, check out my unboxing pictures

Parece que el diseñador de eee-control está trbajando en una nueva versión.  Mientras tanto con esto me vale.

According to TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington, Google’s much hyped and long-awaited Chrome Operating System will arrive next week. A “reliable source” informs them that Chrome OS will be available for download within a week.

When the operating system was first announced, Google did say that it would be available in the autumn with pre-installed netbooks available to buy from 2010, so this seems right on schedule.

I understand that initially Chrome OS will only support a limited number of netbooks, though they will expand their hardware support to regular desktop PCs in time. Given that Chrome is based on Linux, I shouldn’t have thought that hardware support would be that much of an issue, but who knows what tweaks the Google engineers have implemented. The TechCrunch article highlights driver support as a weak point and says that Google has been working with hardware manufacturers, though I have no idea how much of this is fact and how much is speculation.

I’m hopeful that they’ll support my netbook (an EEE) because I will be trying this out just as soon as I can get my hands on it!
