To illustrate, we offer the Barcelona series at our store. Mies van der Rohe designed the Lounge Chair and Ottoman for the German Pavilion at the International Exhibition of 1929 in Barcelona, Spain. Many of the designs that DWR, Herman Miller and Knoll sell are now in the public domain for classic Bauhaus models. In the past manufactures had to pay an extra fee for the use of these designs and the artist was paid a fee for each product that was produced. However most of these products no longer require such. Instead they just pocket the sum they once paid to the architect. Rather than decreasing the prices to reflect the lower production costs for these items the manufactures have decided to raise them. Finland in 1910, Eero Saarinen was the son of Eliel Saarinen, a noted and respected architect. His mother, Loja Saarinen, was a gifted sculptor, weaver, photographer, and architectural model maker. Eero grew up in a household where drawing and painting were taken very seriously, and a devotion to quality and professionalism were instilled in him at an early age. He was taught that each object should be designed in its “next largest context – a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, environment in a city plan.”

In his purist approach to architecture and interior design, Eero Saarinen sought the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution within an overall unity of design. In his pedestal collection, which includes a dining, coffee and side table, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: “Every significant piece of furniture from the past has a holistic structure.”

An immediate classic upon its introduction in 1956 but a design in progress since his work with Charles Eames in the 1940 MOMA Organic Design contest, Saarinen’s objective was to clarify the furniture forms he designed. “The undercarriage of chairs and tables makes an ugly, confusing, unfruitful world. I wanted to clean up the slum of legs and make the chair all one thing again.”
