A *long* time ago, Before Children Era, we discovered these Bay Area modern landmarks and others that are still on our wish list. Time flies, and the babies have grown up into little citizens and I think we’ll revive these itineraries into family friendly trips.

Some of these places are running out of time, and it’s great to have today’s kids experience the open space when dreaming of grandiose castles.

The Neutra House was designed in 1935 and completed in 1939 by internationally renowned architect Richard Neutra.
Its clean lines exemplify mid-century modernism and the internationally recognized California modern style. Neutra collaborated with architect Otto Winkler on a dozen residential projects/homes in the S.F. Bay Area in the 1930’s. Only two of these projects were south of Atherton, with both in Los Altos.
This house is one of the “Three Small Houses in an Orchard” as Neutra referred to his project.

468 Easton Road // Ed Murchison - Virginia Cook Realtors //$365,000

Inspired by the Eichler series of homes in California, the 468 House with
floor-to-ceiling walls of glass, soaring vaulted ceilings, exposed wood
beams and public spaces around a courtyard is a contemporary take
on Mid-century Modernism. Built in 2006 by Dallas Architect Jonathan
Delcambre and lauded by the U.S. Green Building Council, the project used structurally insulated panels (SIPs), passive solar design, low-
E windows, a TPO membrane roof as well as other environmentally
responsible building techniques.

The architect, who has also designed larger and much more expensive
homes in the Kessler Woods development kept the house in scale with
the original homes in the neighborhood and chose classic modern
materials such as 16″ roman brick – similar to the style favored by Frank
Lloyd Wright combined with concrete flooring and other more
contemporary features.

Like most Mid-century Modern homes, 468 House has an open floor
plan with the living room, dining room and kitchen sharing one space.
Theses spaces are united by matching maple cabinetry in the kitchen
with it’s large island, the media wall in the living room and the custom
see-though fireplace that acts as an architectural screen giving
definition to the spaces. The exposed beam ceilings soar up to 14′ with
clerestory windows providing natural light and privacy. The low wall
of roman brick brings the exterior finishes inside uniting the inside to the
outside. There are two bedrooms separated by a Jack’n'Jill bath on
one end of the house, a powder room and an office that opens to
the courtyard. The spacious private master bedroom suite is located
on the opposite side of the house and features two shoe closets, a
walk-in closet and master bath with clerestory windows.

The 468 House is the perfect mix of classic Mid-century Modern
architecture re-imagined for a new century at an affordable price.

Whenever the new VW commercial comes on, I actually slow down the entire commercial so that I could fully enjoy the beautiful houses that are in the background. John gets super annoyed whenever I do this but I just LOVE these Eichler homes. I totally heart the clean lines, simple and elegant architecture, and can’t get over how inviting these homes are. It always makes me wonder why there aren’t these type of homes in Bergen County, NJ!!!!!

Mid-century architecture was a further development of Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles of organic architecture combined with many elements reflected in the International and Bauhaus movements. Mid-century modernism, however, was much more organic in form and less formal than the International style.

Scandinavian designers and architects were very influential at this time, with a style characterized by simplicity, democratic design and natural shapes. Like many of Wright’s designs, Mid-Century architecture was frequently employed in residential structures with the goal of bringing modernism into America’s post-war suburbs. This style emphasized creating structures with ample windows and open floor-plans with the intention of opening up interior spaces and bringing the outdoors in.

Many Mid-century homes utilized then groundbreaking post and beam architectural design that eliminated bulky support walls in favor of walls seemingly made of glass. Function was as important as form in Mid-Century designs with an emphasis placed specifically on targeting the needs of the average American family. Examples of residential Mid-Century modern architecture are frequently referred to as the California Modern style. Pioneering builder and real estate developer Joseph Eichler was instrumental in bringing Mid-Century Modern architecture to subdivisions in California and select housing developments on the east coast. Eichler style, the epitome of mid-mod design Joseph Eichler was a California developer with a very particular, social vision. As millions of soldiers returned home from World War II, Eichler was determined to create a better living environment for the common man. He envisioned modern homes that incorporated various architecturally distinct elements that would appeal to the average family — and an average family income. When Eichler homes were first on the market, their average sale price was $12,000.

Eichler Homes, built over 11,000 homes in Northern California and three communities in Southern California, along with 3 homes in Chestnut Ridge NY. These homes came to be known as “Eichlers” and changed the California lifestyle. The essence of the Eichler design was inspired by Joseph’s two year stay in a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. He wanted to bring some of similar features from that home, such as indoor-outdoor living, to the middle class. He wanted to build homes with that open, flowing, modern style of architecture. In 1949, Joseph founded Eichler Homes, Inc. He first hired the Bay Area architecture firm of Anshen and Allen to create these affordable modern homes. The firm came up with houses that had an open plan, post and beam construction, whole walls of glass, and radiant heating. These were features you might have found in an expensive, custom-built home at the time, but certainly not in a house built for the masses. At the time, this would have been an insane concept to most developers, who would not have seen the sense and profit in hiring architects to design tract housing.

But Eichler had ideas on how to make his vision a reality. It was through careful refinement, that Eichler honed his manufacturing process. He was able to produce homes in a cost-efficient way. As in an assembly line process, he had parts constructed at a central location and then shipped to the building site. He also made use of standard building materials in a creative way. Joseph Eichler was savvy to the dawning of a new age of post-war marketing in the 50’s. He launched a sophisticated and aggressive marketing campaign to introduce his homes to the American public. For the first time in advertising history, homes were featured alongside models, posing as homeowners- looking happy and perfect in an Eichler paradise.

In today’s housing market we are inundated by such imagery. But up until then, architectural photography had been traditionally stark and cold. Eichler had his mind set on presenting these homes as fresh: warm, livable and desirable. Eichler homes seemed destined to attract niche market. Despite his efforts to appeal to the masses, the homes were never popular on a wide scale. At the time they were built, they attracted an interesting subset of people– architects, engineers, designers and modern arts lovers. Although he did not get the mainstream popularity he was aiming for, Eichler garnered a slew of awards for his work: The Life Magazine Award of Merit in 1953; the National Association of Home Builders Award in 1954; Living Magazine Award in 1955; and the American Institute of Architecture Sunset Magazine Award in 1956, 1957 and 1959. Today there is a great resurgence of interest in the Eichler home and an almost cult-like following by those who dwell in them. Eichler’s original design elements have withstood the test of time. Flat, low sloping roofs, open-plan living, the blurring of the lines between indoors and outdoors with atrium’s, window walls, skylights and sliding glass doors—these elements have an appealing and classic California modern character.

And these are just a few of the features that make Eichler homes so very popular today. Classic Eichler materials have also come back into vogue: Radiant heating, cork floors, wood paneling and vinyl tile. Of the 11,000 original Eichler’s built, many are in the San Francisco Bay Area: San Francisco, Sacramento, Marin County, the East Bay, San Mateo County, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and San Jose. The Southern California Eichler communities are in Orange, Thousand Oaks, and Granada Hills. Recently a decision by the National Park Service has placed two Palo Alto subdivisions on the National Register of Historic Places. The 243-house Greenmeadow tract, and the 63-house Green Gables enclave, are the first subdivisions ever to be placed on the register. Eichler homes, beyond the ongoing flux in housing trends, will now have permanent historic value.

The New Book of Etiquette doesn’t have a lot of advice on travelling byplane, as “it

The New Book of Etiquette doesn’t have a lot of advice on travelling byplane, as “it’s still new enough to be thrilling for most of us!” Still, there must be something we can learn; after all, as Money Grubbing Lawyer* pointed out a few days ago, flying was (in theory, at least) a far more enjoyable experience in the early days of commercial aviation.

so, without further ado, Lillian Eichler’s tips for airline travel:

-”On most of the large planes, passengers are given glassine envelopes containing cotton and chewing gum. The experienced traveler pads his ears with the cotton and chews the gum to adjust his ears and throat to higher altitude. This is one occasion when chewing gum is not frowned upon as a vulgarity!”

-”The cabin of a plane is so small, the passengers in such close proximity, than any attempt to observe social formalities is quite out of the question. Nobody waits to be introduced- everybody talks to everybody else- strangers are drawn to the common thrill of flying.”

-”It is not customary to tip airplane hostesses. However, if a hostess has been especially kind and attentive and the passenger wishes to show his appreciation, he may have a small, impersonal gift such as a box of candy or an interesting new book mailed to her after the trip is over.”

*(for advice on keeping flying in the present more tolerable, read his post. Don’t go expecting Air Canada to hand out glassine envelopes, now.)

Hope everyone is well & enjoying the blue sky

the last few days.

I visited a friends new listing the other day & wanted to pass it along to everyone. It’s in one of my favorite neighborhoods West of Palm & South of Barstow

. It’s going to need some work, ie: pool needs to be re-plastered & some cosmetics, but the bones seem good & it’s got lots of character. High ceilings, original stainless kitchen appliances & general groovieness that you would expect from the era. PLUS… it has six bedrooms & three & a half baths at 3131 sq’. It’s not a bank owned home so you don’t have to wait for a long escrow on this one.
If you know anyone interested give me a shout & I’d love to show it. I’d love to see someone who appreciates the era get in there & fix it up. At $87.75/sq’ it’s a good price for such a great neighborhood.

Sorry to be all business this time around, but it is such a great time to buy, if you know any first timers I would love & appreciate any referrals you send my way.

If you click on or paste the link below into your browser it should (hopefully) take you to the listing for the home above.

Hi All, Eldon here. I spent several hours the other night at one of the most spectacular Mid Century

Hi All,

Eldon here. I spent several hours the other night at one of the most spectacular Mid Century Modern homes I’ve seen in Fresno. It is the quintesential Usonian, designed by Architect Walter Shaw in 1954, over 3000 square feet, & is located on over an acre in Fresno’s Old Fig area of town. For you out of towners – Old Fig is probabbly the most sought after area of Fresno for it’s architecture ranging from the twenties on, some of Fresno’s most stately & beautiful homes, & gorgeous enormous trees ling every street. It is a county island, so the feel is very out of the city any given night neighbors are out walking & enjoying the area. Old fig is also home to “Christmas Tree Lane” – a long running historic & the longest decorated & lighted street in America.

The home will be available in a month or so, but I have to tell you that it is in my opinion one of the most spectacular examples of modernism I have seen here, or in my many years in Los Angeles. Ill keep you posted!!

Also kaufte ich mir folgende Klavierschulen:

1. Die Russische Klavierschule
2. Eichler & Freyhl Klavier-Schule
3. Populäre Klavierschule von Oskar Fuchs
4. Europäische Klavierschule
5. Klavier-Spiel-Schule
6. Hal Leonard Klavierschule

I just unpacked a great book I’ve had for several years, part of my collection of old… stuff. The New Book of Etiquette by Lillian Eichler isn’t new anymore, but it’s a lot of fun to read if you enjoy seeing how much things have changed in the last 80+ years.

I’m going to post ideas/tips/excerpts from this book on here every once in a while. Most of it’s not advice I’ll be following, but it should be fun.

*****

Christmas is less than a month away (apologies to anyone who hadn’t realized that yet). I’m done shopping for the family in Ontario (I took care of that while we lived there so I wouldn’t have to worry about mailing presents), but I’ve hardly started for AJ and the boys. In the spirit of giving, I’d like to share a few of Ms. Eichler’s thoughts on “Gifts At Christmas Time”

-”For the woman who likes pretty things for her room, we suggest a handsome perfume bottle, a make-up box, a painted glass powder jar… Make your gift suit the person for whom it is intended, add a bit of holly to carry the Christmas spirit, and send it so that it arrives on Christmas morning.”

[Good advice, but I'm pretty sure Canada Post doesn't deliver on holidays...]

- “Little travelling clocks, bridge sets, tennis rackets, gloves, fitted bags, books, collar boxes, work baskets, powder jars, boudoir dolls, writing sets- all these make fine Christmas gifts…. A backgammon game will not excite the little cousin who goes to business and has no time to learn the game; nor will a book of poetry especially delight the flippant young debutante.”

-”Men are fussy about gifts, as about almost everything else! They like to choose their own ties and gloves. But they appreciate, at Christmas time or birthday time, a handy cigar-lighter, a good book, a pair of cuff links, sensible bedroom slippers.”

There you have it, folks- your gift-giving needs all wrapped up, as it were. Boudoir dolls, collar boxes and powder jars. You can thank me on boxing day, after the flippant young debutante in your life expresses relief at not receiving another book of poetry.

Do you think we’ve lost something in our gift-giving now that we can get so much of what we want cheaply and easily? How often do we find ourselves giving someone another sweater, another dustcatcher for the mantel, another book that he/she doesn’t have, but could easily get for him/herself? It seems to me that people actually enjoyed giving and receiving gifts more when the items were scarcer but more special, and when love and thought went into the giving of one or two items rather than the stress and desperation we so often put into getting the right (excessive) number of gifts for the kids, spending the right amount on friends and family, and chasing down every new, unnecessary whatever that the advertisers decide we need to give someone to prove that we really love them.

I’m just sayin’.
