Game of the week: Olympique de Marseille vs. AS Monaco

Another week and another day of games in Ligue 1. Unlike the last few weeks where there have been quite a few large matchups, this week seems to be kind of a slow week in Ligue 1. While there are a few games that will be interesting, most should be pretty straight forward.

League leaders Bordeaux will hit the road against a struggling St. Etienne, while second place Lyon will be taking on Lens on the road. Even with Yoann Gourcuff missing today’s game, Bordeaux should not miss a beat against Les Verts. On the other hand, Lyon will see the return of Michel Bastos, after missing a few games. Lisandro Lopez is still out with a groin injury.

The game that most people will be watching will be Sunday’s match between Marseille and Monaco. So far, Monaco fans have been less than impressed with the play of Icelandic star Eidur Gudjohnsen. In an interview with the Ligue 1 site, Gudjohnsen has even admitted that play in France was a lot more challenging than he though.

“Ligue 1 is completely different to what I expected. It’s very tactical and physical with well organised teams that try and play a lot of counterattacking football. It’s not entirely surprising but last year I played for a team that averaged 70 per cent possession. I need to adapt as quickly as possible but I’m not worried,” said Gudjohnsen.

Along with losing last week to Valencienne on the road, Marseille suffered a midweek loss to Real Madrid by a score of 3-0. Even if there was a highly questionable foul called on Souleymane Diawara, which lead to his ejection and second Real goal, the loss leaves L’OM fans wondering if they really have a chance at winning Ligue 1.

The main problem with L’OM this year has been scoring goals. But after the Valencienne and Real Madrid games, allowing goals has been a problem as well. Luckily for Marseille, Monaco isn’t a high scoring team so far this season, with Nene being the producer of nearly 50% of their goals. That might chance if Gudjohnsen finds his touch.

Another game of note will be that between Nice and Valencienne. While many people didn’t have this game circled on their calendar, this game might tell a lot about the two teams. Nice, who has played far from impressive this year, are looking to take three points at home against a Valencienne team that has looked quite impressive the last few games. With their win against Marseille at home, Valencienne have the chance to jump even higher in the Ligue 1 standings, where they currently sit 10th.

In the north of France, the match between Boulogne and Lille will prove quite impotant for both sides. Up until their last few games, Boulogne have had quite an easy schedule this year. But without a win since August 22nd, they will be looking to turn things around. On the other hand, Boulogne will be playing a Lille team that has to be the least impressive team in Ligue 1 this season. Many expected this team to be challenging for a Europa League spot. That dream seems all but over now. Still, with the talent that Lille have on their team, it will be interesting to see if they actually can get a result away.

The last game of note will be the match up between Paris St-Germain and Nancy. Nancy have had a quiet year so far, putting up decent results on the way. While they did hit the skids for a while their last two matches, a win against Sochaux in Ligue 1 plan and a win against Monaco in League Cup play, has shown that they look to be back on track.

Paris St-Germain need to get back to the form that they showed at the start of the year. Early on, it looked like PSG could challenge not only for a Champions League spot, but the title as well. But with the impressive play of Bordeaux this year, it will be hard for PSG to catch them at this point since they are already seven points behind first place.

Even with a loss to Monaco and a draw to Lyon, PSG has looked impressive. They could have easily won both of those games. But PSG seems to let their guard down in the last minutes of play. And with the decaying play of Marseille, PSG can really make a statement this week. They are currently only two points behind Marseille, who currently hold the last Champions League spot.

The transfer market in France has been pretty quiet so far, and most teams pretty much look the same as they did at the beginning of the season. Marouane Chamakh seems to be staying at Bordeaux, which is what Ligue 1 fans knew a few weeks ago yet EPL fans didn’t have a clue. Marseille and Lyon and most other teams haven’t done anything.

Except AS Monaco.

The Principality secured the services of Icelandic superstar Eidur Gudjohnsen on a free transfer from Barcelona. The team also netted Le Mans center midfielder Mathieu Coutadeur.

So far this year, Monaco has been dismal at scoring goals, with only three goals in four games. With this scoring drought, the logical choice is to put Gudjohnsen in the striker position, even though he can play attacking midfield as well. Also, since Gudjohnsen has been a consistent scorer in both international and club play, he would pair up quite well we French U-21 star Frédéric Nimani.

We will see in the next month or so if Gudjohnsen alone will be enough to help the struggling offensive of Monaco, but so far they have not had any answers to that question.

The only other move of note for American fans (which is a move that actually happened a few weeks ago) was the signing of Chicago Fire defender Bakary Soumare to Boulogne.

The principality outfit have snared the Icelandic star.

Monaco FC have completed the free signing of Barcelona frontman Eidur Gudjohnsen, the French club have announced.

Gudjohnsen had long been linked with football away from the Camp Nou after expressing his dissatisfaction over his peripheral role at the Catalan club.

The Iceland international has now penned a two-year contract with Monaco, where he will wear the club’s No.9 jersey.

The signing of Gudjohnsen finally ends Monaco’s quest for a striker after their bid for Steve Savidan collapsed because of a cardiac condition.

The former Chelsea man, who joins Monaco on the same day as Mathieu Coutadeur, has become the first Icelandic footballer in the history of the club.

Por otra parte, el presidente del Racing de Santander, Francisco Pernía, confirmó en declaraciones a Catalunya Ràdio, que habían llegado a un acuerdo con el FC Barcelona para el fichaje de Henrique. El brasileño viajará a Santander este mismo lunes, mientras se cierran los últimos flecos. Henrique, a diferencia de Gudjohnsen, no se va traspasado sino cedido.

With just under two days left of the 2009 summer transfer window, I think it’s widely acknowledged that it hasn’t been the best period of transfers for Bolton. Sam Ricketts and Paul Robinson’s signings appear to have angered many Bolton fans when the money should have quite rightly been spent on a striker and an attacking midfielder. We now have full-backs coming out of our ears and no one in to even compete with the increasingly woeful Elmander. Our attacking options are limited to say the least, yet inexplicably we send Obadeyi out on loan and rumours begin to circulate about Vaz Te signing for a team in Turkey.

With just two days left of the transfer window, our most likely signing appears to be, er, Kevin Nolan. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve got a lot of time for Kevin Nolan and I think he rightly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as recent Bolton legends such as Okocha, Campo and Bergsson. He showed nothing but love for the club and was one of the main reasons we qualified for Europe twice. BUT, as occasionally happens in football, some players go off the boil and Kevin is one of these unfortunate souls. Certainly not to Michael Ricketts proportions, but it became patently obvious to most fans that Kev wasn’t the player who was knocking on the door of the England squad a few seasons earlier, and the £4m transfer to Newcastle has been seen as Megson’s shrewdest bit of business (despite claims he actually knew nothing about the transfer – but that’s for another post). If Nolan comes back, I will get behind him but he would need to emulate his form of four years ago for me to think it was a good move. After a poor start to his time at Newcastle, he looks like he might be getting the hunger back for scoring goals (with two in his last two games), OR he might just have found his level in the Championship.

What has angered me is the way Bolton have avoided clearly good, plausible transfer targets where teams around our level have gone in there and snapped them up. In particular, I’m very disappointed we never went in for either Tuncay Sanli or Eidur Gudjohnsen. Two players who can both play attacking midfielder or striker i.e. the positions we desperately need filling. Tuncay went to Stoke for £5m, the price being bandied around for Gudjohnsen (who has always stated he’d like to finish his career at Bolton) was also £5m. To put that into perspective, we paid £4m for Zat Knight. Now ask yourself a question, would it have been better to have either Gudjohnsen or Tuncay in the team and either Shittu or O’Brien being first team, or to have Knight in the team at the expense of solving our biggest problem of scoring goals? I know which one I’d choose, but Defensive Gary doesn’t perhaps think the same way I do.

The talk of Ivan Klasnic is encouraging, and Beckford may be worth a punt, but I get the feeling we may only add a Rasiak-a-like on the final day. Luckily he’s signed for Reading so we won’t actually get the real thing!

El FC Barcelona podría sufrir una nueva baja en las próximas horas. El Mónaco francés se ha interesado en los últimos días en hacerse con los servicios del islandés Eidur Gudjohnsen, quien no entra en los planes del entrenador blaugrana, Pep Guardiola. Por ello, las directivas de ambos clubs ya se han sentado a negociar las condiciones del traspaso. La operación está a punto de cerrarse. Las conversaciones se aceleraron durante el viaje de la expedición azulgrana al Principado para disputar la final de la Supercopa de Europa; situación que aprovecharon representantes de ambos clubs para reunirse y sentar las bases del pase del futbolista.

El acuerdo entre el Barça y el Mónaco es total. El Barça cobraría hasta un máximo de 2 millones de euros en concepto de variables. No habría ningún fijo de salida y se cobraría en función del rendimiento de Guddy y de la trayectoria del Monaco.
Consciente de que no cuenta para Guardiola, Guddjohnsen también está cediendo en sus pretensiones económicas y ahora está negociando con el Mónaco sus condiciones salariales. Si bien en el Barça percibe unos 4 millones de euros brutos, el Mónaco le ofrece tres. Esta es la única diferencia que impide un acuerdo que puede llegar hoy o mañana, cuando se cierra el mercado veraniego.

‘Guddy’, cuyo contrato finaliza el próximo año, ha estado también en la órbita del West Ham de Gianfranco Zola. El técnico, ex compañero del islandés en el Chelsea, insistió en su fichaje a la directiva inglesa, pero no contaban con el dinero necesario para acometer el traspaso. Por este motivo, el club británico decidió solicitar la cesión del jugador, lo que provocaría que Gudjohnsen se marchara gratis la campaña siguiente. El Mónaco, ahora, tiene ventaja.

Pocos cambios habrá en el once del Barça respecto al que conquistó la Supercopa de España.

Como ya sucedió frente al Athletic Club en la Supercopa de España, el Barça no piensa hacer concesión alguna al Shakhtar Donetsk esta noche en el Louis II. Josep Guardiola presentará el mejor equipo del que dispone con el objetivo de sumar el segundo trofeo de la campaña, el cuarto del 2009.
Y presentar el mejor once posible, supone mucho cuando uno se refiere al campeón de la Liga de Campeones, aunque Rafa Márquez y Andrés Iniesta todavía no estén a punto.

Quizás una de las pocas novedades en la alineación pueda ser la del regreso de Eric Abidal al lateral izquierdo. Si el titular contra el Athletic Club fue el brasileño Maxwell, ahora el internacional francés podría tener la opción de disputar la final de la Supercopa. Un premio excelente para un jugador que por culpa de las sanciones se perdió las de Copa del Rey y la Champions en la recta final de la carrera por el tricampeonato. Dani Alves por la derecha y Carles Puyol y Gerard Piqué en el eje central completarán la línea defensiva por delante de Víctor Valdés.

En el centro del campo es donde quizás pueda existir alguna incógnita sobre lo que puede decidir Guardiola. En principio, la tripleta Touré-Xavi-Keita rindió a un magnífico nivel el pasado domingo. En la recámara está Sergio Busquets y el joven canterano tiene muchas opciones de entrar en el once si los técnicos quieren repartir esfuerzos entre los jugadores disponibles. Otras opciones en esta posición pasan por Eidur Gudjohnsen, aunque el islandés cuenta poco y en los próximos días puede cerrar su marcha al West Ham.

En la delantera existen pocas dudas pues Messi, Ibrahimovic y Henry, que ha superado las molestias en la rodilla y los tendones, aparecen como indiscutibles a estas alturas. En la recámara, el talento de los jóvenes del plantel Bojan y Pedro.

Se trata de un conjunto de las máximas garantías para enfrentarse a un Shakhtar Donetsk al que ya conocen muy bien pues fueron rivales en la fase de grupos de la pasada Liga de Campeones. Y el campeón de la desaparecida UEFA Cup no fue, ni mucho menos, un rival fácil.

El Barça sufrió para ganar en Ucrania y perdió el intrascendente duelo del Camp Nou. Se trata de un equipo que también apuesta por el buen trato del balón y que llegará a la final sin bajas y con la ambición intacta.

Eidur Gudjohnsen may not want to leave Barcelona, but Monaco hope to persuade him otherwise.

Monaco are set to hold talks with Eidur Gudjohnsen about a move to the club before and after Barcelona’s European Super Cup appearance in the principality, according to a report.

The Icelandic international has been told that he is surplus to requirements at Camp Nou, but is reluctant to leave unless tempted by an offer that excites him.

Gudjohnsen knows that he will play a bit-part role if he turns down all interested parties and chooses to remain at Barcelona, and is set to hear what choices he has,L’Equipe state.

On Friday Monaco will attempt to persuade the striker-turned-attacking midfielder that they can offer him regular football and the lifestyle to prise him away from Catalunya.

West Ham United are also in the frame, but they are only keen to take the 30-year-old on loan because they cannot match the wages that he is currently on at Barca.

Monaco would be willing to make his move permanent and negotiations are scheduled for the Blaugrana’s visit for the European Super Cup final, when they take on Shakhtar Donetsk.

Hazard a must for Manchester United

Manchester United Football Club are believed to have made Eden Hazard a top target.

The young Belgian is rated as one of the brightest midfielders in Europe, and his talent has certainly not escaped the notice of Reds manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

It is believed the Scot sent his scouts to watch the 18-year-old in action for Lille last Thursday, when they took on Racing Genk in the Europa League.

Hazard has also been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea in the past, so Ferguson may be wise to act quickly if, as expected, he decides to take the player.

To highlight the talents of the attack-minded starlet, Real Madrid legend and club advisor Zinedine Zidane said he would “take him blindfolded” to the Bernabeu.

West Ham United to finally land Gudjohnsen…on loan?

Gianfranco Zola is desperate to add to his striker options at Upton Park, and he has been linked with a number of top names in recent weeks.

It is believed his first choice has always been Gudjohnsen, his former Chelsea team-mate, but the £6million asking price has been a stumbling block.

However, Sport claim Barcelona are willing to let the Premier League side have the 30-year-old on loan for the season, providing they cover the majority of his wage.

West Hamboss Gianfranco Zola is close to agreeing a loan deal for Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The cash-strapped Hammers are in no financial position to agree a £5million permanent deal for the striker but a season-long deal is on the cards.

Barcelona sources claim all that remains to be ironed out is how much the Londoners will pay towards the player’s wages.

Mata es un jugador que gusta mucho a los técnicos.

La opción de fichar a Mata no está muerta. El F.C. Barcelona no piensa tirar la toalla definitivamente por el delantero asturiano, cuyo fichaje podría poner de acuerdo los intereses del Barça y del Valencia, dos clubs que este verano han vivido numerosas e importantes diferencias a raíz del intento de los barcelonistas por hacerse con los servicios de Villa, que enfrentaron a ambas entidades.

El Barça, que en su día ya preguntó por la posibilidad de fichar a Mata, pero que se encontró con una respuesta por parte del Valencia idéntica a la que obtuvo al preguntar por el ‘Guaje’, cree que la tesitura económica del Valencia puede favorecer el hecho de que se reabran las negociaciones.

El Valencia está sumido desde hace tiempo en un caos económico que ha hecho necesaria una urgente ampliación de capital. Dicha ampliación de capital no sólo se realizaba mediante la aportación de personas particulares, lideradas por los propios miembros de la plantilla, que con el entrenador Unai Emery al frente, si no que se basaba especialmente en la aportación de la empresa Inversiones Dalport, un grupo uruguayo que aglutina el 50,3 por ciento de las acciones del club.

Pues bien, esta opción no se concretará al comunicar ayer el ex presidente de la entidad y cara visible del grupo inversos, Vicente Soriano que Dalport no acudiría a la ampliación de capital.

Ante esta situación, el Valencia no va a tener bastante con las aportaciones realizadas por los particulares, que en su primera fase ha cubierto 17 millones de los 92 fijados. Por tanto, el Barça considera que un acuerdo por Mata permitiría a ambas entidades salir beneficiadas.

Por otra parte, el West Ham inglés sigue empeñado en hacerse con los servicios del islandés Eidur Gudjohnsen, quien por su parte no acaba de ver claro su regreso a Londres. El entrenador de los ‘hammers’, el italiano Gianfranco Zola, es el principal valedor para el fichaje del jugador blaugrana.

Måske de engelske medier har fulgt med på min blog, who knows!

Gudjohnsen skulle dog koste i omegnen af 15 millioner Euro, hvilket virker fuldstændigt vanvittigt, hans alder og kvaliteter taget i betragtning.

Martins skulle stå i omkring £8 millioner, hvilket er en fornuftig pris for den lille nigerianer, der helt sikkert kan blive et gigant hit på Craven Cottage.

Udover de to højt profilerede navne er Kevin Doyle også blevet nævnt som angrebsforstærkning til Fulhams slunkne angrebskæde.

Doyle har tidligere været ganske målfarlig i Premier League, men prisen på £6.5 millioner kan godt virke en smule i overkanten, og efter undertegnedes mening vil Martins være en bedre løsning.

Endnu en angriber på Hodgsons radar skulle være Villarreals amerikanske hitman Jozy Altidore, der lige nu er med USA til Confederations Cup.

Her har han ikke imponeret mig specielt, men den unge amerikaner har da helt sikkert potentiale, og med sin solide størrelse kan han sikkert godt få succes i den fysiske Premier League.

I første omgang er der tale om en lejeaftale, hvilket vil være fordelagtigt for alle parter, da Altidore kan få tiltrængt spilletid, Fulham kan få sig en solid målscorer og Villarreal får et ungt talent på græs og kan følge hans udvikling på højeste niveau.

Sidste rygte omhandler en potentiel exit, da Celtic udviser interesse i Diomansy Kamara. Flere medier spekulerer i en pris omkring de £5 millioner, hvilket jeg syntes er en fair pris for senegaleseren.

Kamara er helt sikkert en udmærket spiller og har scoret nogle vitale mål i løbet af de seneste par sæsoner (Ikke mindst en double mod City under The Great Escape), men fem millioner er en god slat penge for en bænkevarmer.

Sidste ord i transfermøllen er ikke skrevet endnu!

Scotland bounced back from Saturday’s opening defeat to Macedonia to defeat Iceland 2-1 in Reykjavik in their World Cup qualifier on Wednesday. Goals from debutant Kirk Broadfoot and James McFadden sealed victory for George Burley’s men, despite Eidur Gudjohnsen netting from the spot after Stephen McManus was red carded.

Burley was full of optimism prior to kick off that the World Cup dream would be back on track and after being criticised following the match in Skopje, he made three changes to his starting line up. Out went Paul Hartley, Graham Alexander and Kenny Miller to be replaced by Broadfoot, Kris Commons and Shaun Maloney.

This prompted the manager to ditch his 4-4-2 system to go with McFadden as the lone striker, with Commons and Maloney providing support in a 4-5-1 come 4-3-3 when Scotland were attacking.

In the opening minutes the Scots started in a positive fashion, zipping the ball from back to front in a confident manner but it was the home side who had the opening chances. Aaron Gunnarson fired in an angled drive which Craig Gordon punched clear with relative ease before Gudjohnsen spurned a great opportunity, firing well over from only 12 yards out.

Broadfoot was the first name to go in the book following a late challenge on the flying Emil Hallfredsson before Scotland opened the scoring on 18 minutes.

An inswinging corner from Barry Robson was met perfectly on the run by Broadfoot to send the massed ranks of Tartan Army inside the Laugardalsvollur stadium delirious.

The Scots looked to build on their lead and only a last ditch tackle from Kristjan Orn Sigurdsson prevented McFadden tapping home Maloney’s low ball across the six yard box. McFadden then played a brilliant ball in but there were no Scottish jerseys on hand to capitalise.

Just before the interval though, Scotland were indebted to skipper McManus as he cleared a Herman Hreidarsson effort from the line.

Iceland began the second period very much on the front foot, with Gudjohnsen especially working into some good positions but the final ball towards their talismanic Barcelona striker let them down.

And the Scots made them pay on the hour mark as Sigurdsson crudely felled McFadden in the area to give Scotland a penalty. The hero of Paris stepped up and although his initial effort was saved, he was on hand along with Barry Robson to bundle the rebound home for a two nil lead.

Scotland at this stage were looking like coasting to recording Burley’s first win as manager but with 13 minutes to go, made life difficult for themselves once more. Under pressure from Helguson McManus inexplicably handled a cross ball and was duly sent off by the Belgian referee. Gudjohnsen scored the spot kick to hand the home team a lifeline.

Burley withdrew Maloney for Alexander and McFadden for Hartley as Scotland faced a nervy final 10 minutes. Helguson from around 15 yards hammered a shot towards goal but the impressive Gary Caldwell threw himself at the ball to block.

But that was as close as Iceland came and Scotland held on to maintain their 100% winning record against Iceland and put themselves back in the qualifying picture ahead of Norway’s visit to Hampden Park next month.

Messi corta y Eto’o apura. Ésa es la fórmula que utilizó el Barça para propinar otro ‘manotazo’ en la Liga (6-0), en esta ocasión en la cara del Real Valladolid. Apenas un cuarto de hora después de que el Real Madrid de Bernd Shuster derrotara al CD Málaga con un agónico 4-3, los blaugrana desarbolaron a los vallisoletanos en tres cuartos de hora en los que la magia de Leo y la ambición de Samuel resultaron determinantes. Al descanso Josep Guardiola ya había recolectado su octavo triunfo consecutivo en la Liga gracias al 4-0 y el Barça se había asegurado el liderato de Primera División por segunda semana.

Sí, SIN INIESTA. Existían dudas sobre cómo encajaría el Barça la importante baja de Andrés Iniesta. Ni se inmutó. Pep Guardiola retocó el once inicial –algo habitual, por otra parte, debido a las constantes rotaciones- y el equipo se volvió más vertical y directo al entrar Thierry Henry y Eidur Gudjohnsen por Andrés. También habría visto en acción a un delantero hambriento de gol y títulos, un francotirador. La demostración de eficacia de Eto’o (trece goles en diez partidos de Liga) es casi inhumana. Sus cuatro dianas en apenas media hora casi dejaron en anécdota los otros cuatro tantos del esforzado Higuaín con el Madrid, dos de los cuales los consiguió de penalty. El camerunés está justificando su empeño por seguir de blaugrana, al menos por una temporada más. El próximo verano será un excelente momento para traspasarlo por una cantidad indecente pues parece difícil que ‘Samu’ encadene dos temporadas sin que se le crucen los cables… El partido dejó otros excelentes detalles, como la progresiva integración de Dani Alves –asistió el 1-0 y volvió a correr la banda y buscar el gol- el compromiso de Henry, quien marcó a la séptima ocasión pero corrió los noventa minutos y dio la cara- o la recuperación de Eidur Gudjohnsen, autor de un precioso gol, el del 5-0, vaselina incluida.

FUTBOL AGONÍA. Si el Barça transmite ‘fútbol asociación’ y compromiso, las sensaciones que deja el Real Madrid son de improvisación, limitaciones y agonía. Con líos internos en los despachos y en el vestuario, con dos de sus tres mejores futbolistas lesionados –Van Nistelrooy y Robben, el otro es Casillas- y abonado a la filosofía italiana del poco fútbol y la máxima rentabilidad, se vio abocado a sufrir ante el Málaga. Lo que nadie puede discutir a los madridistas es su capacidad de sufrimiento y de lucha. Si el Barça corre hasta el minuto noventa para aumentar la goleada, el Real corre hasta en el descuento para salir de la mediocridad. Así consiguió ganar ayer pese a estar con un jugador menos por otra tontería del inestable Sergio Ramos. Excelentes condiciones, poca cabeza.

Esta noche juegan el resto de favoritos. Por ahora, un mal Real Madrid aguantó el tirón del Barça mal que bien. Villarreal-Almería, Sevilla-Recreativo y Getafe-Valencia dictaminarán si el resto de aspirantes son flojos de manos o no lo son. Por cierto, la próxima es otra semana de dos partidos, con la Copa de por medio…

Here’s something to watch when your team has missed chances… it won’t change what happened in your game but it might bring a smile to your face.

Eidur Gudjohnsen ha asegurado que el equipo tiene “hambre de títulos” conscientes de que puede hacer historia ganado Liga y Champions. El islandés cree que el Barça depende de sí mismo para recortarle diferencias al líder.

Gudjohnsen es optimista. El centrocampista islandés cree que en el equipo hay suficiente ambición para ganar los dos títulos que hay en juego ya que saben que esta temporada pueden hacer historia:”Todos tenemos hambre de títulos. Sabemos que podemos hacer historia si ganamos los dos títulos a los que aspiramos. Al final de la carrera de un futbolista lo que queda son los recuerdos de los títulos ganados y los grandes partidos disputados”.

El equipo depende de sí mismo

Gudjohnsen ha destacado la actitud del equipo tanto en los entrenamientos como en los partidos y se ha mostrado optimista ya que cree que el Barça depende de sí mismo para finalizar con éxito la presente temporada:”Creo que la actitud del equipo es buena en los partidos y cada día cuando entrenamos. Lo que tenemos que hacer es pensar solo en sumar los tres puntos cada partido. En nuestras manos está recortar diferencias con el R. Madrid. Si jugamos pensando solo en la victoria soy optimista y seguro que ganaremos la Liga”, ha asegurado Gudjohsen.

Más presión al líder

Este sábado, el Barça tendrá una buena oportunidad de añadir presión al líder. Una victoria ante el Betis dejaría ale quipo de Rijkaard a solo un punto del R. Madrid que el domingo recibirá al Sevilla. “Es cierto que podemos presionar mucho al líder si este sábado sumamos los tres puntos ante el Betis. Pero lo mejor es pensar en nosotros mismos, jugar como sabemos y solo así, podremos ganar al Betis y, al final, ser campeones”.

JONATHAN WOODGATE: The former Real Madrid central defender has been stuck in the mediocrity of Middlesbrough. After a transfer bidding war between Newcastle and Tottenham, the Spurs have come out on top – addressing a big issue within their line-up. Michael Dawson can’t be trusted and who knows when Ledley King is ever going to be fully fit again. Only Pascal Chimbonda can say he’s doing anything worthwhile. Woodgate went to Real Madrid as a young 24 year old, but with one major problem, huge injury issues. He solidified himself as a first team central defender but then the injuries hit, limiting him to 9 games over 3 seasons. Tottenham apparently picked Woody up for $16 million, but guess what? – a hamstring injury should keep him from joining their starting line-up for another 2-3 weeks. The Hotspur also look to finish up a deal for Scottish international and Rangers fullback Alan Hutton soon. The figure seems to be around $18 million. Clearly, Juande Ramos is addressing their major weaknesses and not afraid to spend the cash for true talent…less so potential.

MO SISSOKO: The Mali international got his wish and hell of a wish come true at that. 22-year old Sissoko was pissed at not getting the chances he deserved at Anfield and wanted more playing time. Can’t really blame the kid as he was asked to wait behind the likes of Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, and Xabi Alonso. His time looks to increase two-fold at Juve with an aging Pavel Nedved, Cristiano Zanetti, and inexperienced Antonio Nocerino leading the way. Juventus’ midfield has provided only 7 of the 46 goals scored this year. Sissoko is generally considered a defensive midfielder but don’t count out the possibility of him getting a little more free reign at the Delle Alpi. The proceeds from Sissoko’s transfer looks to be the money Liverpool needs to pay for a permanent capture of Javier Mascherano.

MILAN BAROS: …………..is back!! The underperforming former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker has returned to the EPL from French juggernauts Olympique Lyonnais and this time with his scoring touch, hopefully, intact. This one flew under the radar as Baros will be moving on loan. His reasoning? What else but lack of playing time. Milan – if you scored more and bitched less, you’d be starting in Lyon. Regardless, he will get the playing time needed at Pompey under Redknapp cause they’re dealing with Kanu and Utaka gone at the AFC and David Nugent just picking up an injury. We’ll give him props for at least a year over at Stade de Gerland.

Ronaldinho ha entrado en la convocatoria para el partido de Liga que su equipo disputará mañana en el Calderón ante el Atlético de Madrid, después de que el técnico, Frank Rijkaard, le diera descanso en el encuentro de Copa del Rey ante el Valencia. Ronaldinho es la principal novedad de una lista a la que también regresan el defensa Sylvinho, el centrocampista Eidur Gudjohnsen y el delantero Giovani dos Santos.

El delantero Bojan Krkic, con un contusión en la cadera sufrida durante el encuentro copero ante el Valencia, y el centrocampista Touré Yaya, que ha entrado en la habitual política de rotaciones de Rijkaard, se caen de la convocatoria. Por su parte, el defensa Rafael Márquez continúa con las molestias que arrastra en el pie derecho desde el encuentro de Liga de Campeones ante el Celtic de Glasgow y, por lo tanto, tampoco estará en el Calderón. Los 18 jugadores que viajarán a Madrid son: Valdés, Pinto, Puyol, Thuram, Milito, Zambrotta, Abidal, Sylvinho, Edmilson, Deco, Gudjohnsen, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Henry, Ronaldinho, Eto’o y Giovani.

Mientras, el segundo entrenador del Barcelona, Johan Neeskens, no cree que el equipo barcelonista pueda acusar en el Calderón la presión que supone no tener margen de error si quiere dar por fin caza al líder, el Real Madrid, que todavía mantiene una ventaja de dos puntos en el campeonato. “Presión teníamos cuando estábamos a nueve, ya que, si perdíamos, nos poníamos a doce. Lo importante es que el equipo ha respondido muy bien últimamente, ha sacado muy buenos resultados que le han dado confianza y vamos a Madrid para sacar otro buen resultado. Eso es lo importante en primer lugar, y luego ya veremos qué hace el Real Madrid (ante el Recreativo de Huelva)”.

El técnico holandés ha comparecido en rueda de prensa en lugar de Frank Rijkaard, que ha decidido dosificar su intervenciones cuando el equipo juegue dos partidos por semana. Pese al cambio de protagonista, el guión no varió y Neeskens se mostró igual de hermético que su compatriota a la hora de dar detalles sobre qué Barça se verá ante el Atlético. Sin embargo, sí que está convencido de que el entrenado atlético, el mexicano Javier Aguirre, “forzará a Agüero para que juegue”, pese a que éste ha arrastrado algunas molestias durante esta semana, y destacó que el argentino “es un gran jugador que esta haciendo un año muy bueno, y que junto a Diego Forlán, forman una delantera peligrosa”.
