What a joy it is to prepare for this concert. Our many friends are helping in countless ways, contributing volunteer efforts, discounts on services, resources, ideas, and sheer encouragement!

These are the moments inspirations begin to kick in, and our ideas for the flow of our event are taking wing!

What caught my special interest are two quotes by the eminent musicologist H. C. Robbins Landon. The first one decries speculation by musical historians and experts about Mozart’s inner motivation for writing this work: “Such insights serve only to reveal a lack of understanding concerning Mozart’s way of thinking, he was always in a special world of his own, and his inner world had very little to do with the external realities of life”.

I love this comment! Who knows, and perhaps Mozart could not have explained at the time himself, why and how this music came to be written?

The second quote expresse eloquently why I felt compelled to include this work in our opening concert – Landon comments:
“This might, quite simply, be considered the most beautiful piece of occasional music ever written, hence its enduring appeal”.

I am a parent of children under the age of 3. Thus much of the “entertainment” I question is for them. There is a “kids book” post on its way, but for now… I make mix cds for them in the car. I want to use the cds to have fun in the car as well as exposing them to many stiles of music and giving them lyrics that are innocent to good for them. (Some times it’s just clips of things I think it would be fun if they started saying.) All while making sure it is nothing that will make me retch.

Thus it also ranges from kids music to “regular” music, so there may be something for everyone here.

Mozart Eine kleine Nachtmusik Allegro:

one of mozart’s most famous works is “seranade no. 13 for strings in g minor”, or more commonly known as “eine kleine nachtmusik” (literally, “a little night music” in german). i’m sure you’ve heard it before. well, some of you have mentioned to me that a lot of the music featured here isn’t exactly music you’d wake up to. that’s true in a way, since i’ve used the blog title a lot more loosely to encompass anything i’ve been listening to lately. it’s also of course a tribute to one of my favorite bands belle and sebastian, who’ve released an ep called i’m waking up to us. anyway, i reckon there’s room to occasionally feature music i’d really wake up to, and i’ve decided to hijack mozart’s title to call this series [eine kleine morgenmusik]. first up is this delightfully fuzzy pop tune by the pains of being pure at heart, a sunny side up with lots of pepper on top.

Ed Note: We’ve been spending the last six months talking about artists, dancers, writers, and musicians realizing that while we know Forsythe and Flaubert and Fille du Regiment and Frida like the back of our hand, we are, in fact, NOT the world (wide web).   So each weekend we’ll plug a new artist (in the general sense) and let you know where you can find them (in the specific sense) and why you should care.  Cool?  Cool.

Who He Is: Mozart is by far one of the most famous composers in the history of music.  Starting off as a young prodigy (he wrote his first composition by age five…screw The Wiggles) and continuing into a musical master in his adult years (which were cut off at the tender age of 35 due to reasons still unknown today but attributed to rheumatic fever).  He wrote over 600 musical works including 41* symphonies, 22 operas, and between 44 and 70 concertos.

Where You’ve Heard Him: Easy Answer: Everywhere.  From Alien to When Harry Met Sally, not to mention countless cartoons, commercials, and subway stations around the world.  Even that familiar tune we sang as kids–”Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” (or, if you prefer, the Alphabet Song) was a composition from Wolfie.  He was also the subject of the 1984 Milos Forman film, Amadeus (and the Peter Shaffer play of the same title).

Where You Can Catch Him: Easy Answer: Everywhere.  Born in Salzburg, Mozart lived in Vienna but considered Prague his second home, so those three cities will always have some concert or opera going on in a church or larger hall.  London runs the Mostly Mozart Festival every summer at the Barbican, and also hosts the Classical Opera Company (which as we’ve said before is dedicated to the work of Mozart and his contemporaries).  He’s also a mainstay in opera and concert houses from Paris to Berlin to Amsterdam to Milan to Moscow.

Don’t Miss: The Classical Opera Company, naturally.  Any production of Cosi fan Tutte, one of his operatic masterpieces (which you’ll recognize if you’ve seen the 2004 flick Closer).  His five violin concerti, some of the most exciting pieces for orchestra.  Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, a classic that is amazing when heard in person.  The Latvia-based Kremerata Baltica, an orchestral ensemble that does Mozart proud.  Anything at the Barbican in London or the Salzburg Festival.

*If you want to get technical, it’s been suggested he wrote 68 symphonies however that number has been, and probably always will be, under debate.

Het Festival van Vlaanderen viert in het najaar zijn vijftigste verjaardag. Het programma werd dinsdagavond voorgesteld in het Gentse Gravensteen. Het thema van deze editie wordt “1001 nachten muziek”. Jelle Dierickx, artistiek coördinator verklaart: “Voor deze jubileumeditie hebben we ons afgevraagd: wie zijn de Sheherazades van de klassieke muziek? Naar welke muzikanten zou je 1001 nachten kunnen luisteren?”. Naast de klassieke opener Ode Gand wordt ook “Festival Avanti!”, de muzikale fietstocht van vorig jaar, hernomen. Nieuwkomer is het avontuurlijke luik “Festival Made”, dat in het teken zal staan van Eine kleine Nachtmusik, in de originele kwintetversie. “HouseMusic”, waarbij huiskamermuziek op koten werd gebracht, houdt er dit jaar mee op, volgens algemeen directeur Serge Platel omdat het “overweldigende succes van vorig jaar niet te evenaren valt”. De vijftigste editie van het Festival van Vlaanderen in Gent gaat van start op 13 september en duurt tot 4 oktober.

Mozart ajuda a curar doenças graves, dizem pesquisadores

Especialistas do Instituto de Neurologia de Londres afirmam que a música de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) pode funcionar melhor que remédios tradicionais no tratamento de diversos males, até mesmo de doenças complexas como a epilepsia.

Segundo artigo publicado nesta quarta-feira (19) no jornal inglês “Independent”, os pesquisadores suspeitaram das qualidades terapêuticas da obra do compositor austríaco quando trataram um paciente de 46 anos que sofria de graves ataques epilépticos e não havia reagido bem a sete tipos de terapias (à base de remédios avançados), e nem mesmo a uma intervenção cirúrgica no cérebro.

Após uma acentuada e inexplicável melhora, os médicos descobriram que o paciente havia começado a escutar a música de Mozart durante cerca de 45 minutos por dia e que seu bem-estar vinha deste novo hábito.

A Universidade de Illinois (Estados Unidos) também relatou, após o caso do paciente inglês, uma situação parecida envolvendo uma criança portadora da síndrome de Lennox-Gastaut (variante rara da epilepsia).

Inteligência

Seguindo os indícios, os médicos descobriram que “doses” de Mozart aumentariam a capacidade matemática e visual, reduziriam o estresse e dores de artrite, além de produzir efeitos positivos no coração e em fetos, no caso de gravidez (estimulando o cérebro do bebê).

Em testes com ratos e carpas, verificou-se melhora no senso de orientação e humor, especialmente com as notas de “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (K. 525)“.

A causa dos efeitos ainda não é tão clara, mas muitos especialistas afirmam que a zona do cérebro que recebe e processa a música é a mesma da percepção espacial, por exemplo. Os estímulos provocados pela complexa e refinada música de Mozart, sobretudo a sonata K. 448, teriam, portanto, um impacto benéfico na massa cinzenta, organizando e estimulando células nervosas precárias, em um processo comparável a impulsos elétricas.

Em testes com voluntários humanos, verificou-se que, ao escutar a sonata K. 448 para dois pianos, o quociente de inteligência do grupo cresceu entre oito e nove pontos. Sobre a exclusividade da música de Mozart, e não de outros compositores, os médicos arriscam que as composições do austríaco trazem uma peculiar técnica de construção musical, baseada em temas circulares com intervalos fixos e variações moduladas do motivo principal.

Para hoy elegí Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Pequeña serenata nocturna), obra de Wolfang Amadeus Mozart que seguramente todos conocen(incluso los que nunca oyeron hablar de ella).

La historia del origen de la “Pequeña Serenata Nocturna de Mozart” es un misterio; no se sabe por qué se compuso ni a quien estaba dedicada.
Fue escrita en el verano de 1787, en Viena, mientras Mozart trabajaba en el segundo acto de su opera “Don Giovanni”. Ese mismo año su padre Leopold había fallecido.
De acuerdo a las notas personales de Mozart, la serenata contaba con cinco movimientos, pero por razones desconocidas sólo nos han llegado cuatro de ellos. Uno de los minuets junto con su trio están perdidos.
La obra estaba originalmente pensada para ser tocada por dos violines, viola, violoncelo y contrabajo; un quinteto de cuerdas. Sin embargo, en interpretaciones modernas el número de músicos se ajusta de acuerdo al criterio del director.

Primer Movimiento:

El primer movimiento es Allegro, esto significa que tiene una velocidad considerable.
La mejor descripción posiblemente sea que es un movimiento animado.

Tiene forma de sonata. La sonata es una forma clásica que consiste en dos temas contrastantes que se exponen, luego se desarrollan con variaciones y arreglos y finalmente se recapitulan, es decir se re-exponen llegando al final. Prueben descubrirlos mientras lo escuchan.

Segundo Movimiento:

El segundo movimiento es un Romance. El romance o romanza, según se escriba en español o italano es una obra de caracter lírico,
es decir, con mucho sentimiento. Creo que en este tipo de movimientos se encuentran las melodías más hermosas de Mozart.

Tercer Movimiento:

El tercer movimiento es un minueto. El minueto es otra forma musical, derivada del minué, un baile cortezano que estuvo de moda en europa en el siglo XVIII.

Cuarto Movimiento:

El cuarto y último movimiento es un rondó. En un rondó se presenta un tema principal alternado con otros temas contrastantes. Normalmente tiene estructura ABACA, esto quiere decir que el tema principal A se alterna con los temas B y C. No es dificil identificar los temas de este rondó.
A mi parecer, este es el mejor movimiento de la obra, aunque en esta interpretación está tocado un poco mas rápido de lo habitual.

En resumen, una obra exquisita de un compositor exquisito como no hubo otro nunca
jamás.
