Siempre he ansiado encontrar un portal de internet en el que network no se hiciera entre profesionales del mundo de los negocios, sino entre músicos y otros actores de la industria. Existe, se llama Indabamusic.

El network en Indabamusic está basado en gente, y sesiones. No sólo puedes definir un perfil, especificando tu actividad musical, tus instrumentos, estilos, etc. sino que puedes crear sesiones para compartir tu creación online, a tiempo real, o dejar colgada la sesión para que otros músicos vayan aportando su granito de arena y ayuden a completar tu idea inicial.

Me acabo de dar de alta, con lo que no me da tiempo para dar un juicio que haga honor a todas las posibilidades.

Lo que más me ha gustado

- Las amplias posibilidades de agregar tu información como usuario y como músico
- Su usabilidad. Navegar por las diferentes pantallas de Indabamusic es un auténtico placer
- El enfoque en las personas y las sesiones. ¡2 opciones las entiende cualquiera!

Lo que menos me ha gustado

- No es culpa de la herramienta, sino de la música. Es harto difícil crear un tema y una sesión que capte la atención del resto de usuarios. Los deberes han de estar hechos: línea de bajo, ritmo, etc… luego tú puedes añadirlos por pistas independientes. Para tener todo eso preparado, en formato digital has de ser, en mi opinión, un crack musical muy bien digitalizado

- Hay mucha basura. Desde que publicar música en internet se convirtió en tarea relativamente fácil, bien sea via MySpace o cualquier otro sucedaneo, la mediocridad abunda. Es el sino de la música, que todos los que nos gusta chapurrear con este maravilloso hobby nos creemos hasta interesantes y merecedores de la atención de los oyentes… eso crea una barbaridad de canciones que apenas valen la pena, bien porque consiste en un jembé desacompasado, o en un saxofón desafinado, o un pop muy cutre

- Es americano, y abunda el contenido anglosajón y el latino hip hop. Es difícil dar con otro tipo de músicas más propias de Europa y resto de continentes

Lo que me deja con el ojo cuadrado

Lo bien que está diseñado y pensado pero… ¿de verdad la música se puede vivir online, sin tener al resto de tus compañeros tocando a tu lado? No lo he probado nunca, aunque ya comentamos en su día acerca de otras herramientas disponibles para hacer jamming online, y DigitalMusician, especializado en crear música de estudio de grabación.

A ver quien de los lectores osa a hacer la prueba de tener una jamming online, yo al saxo, un día de estos, le tengo ganas.

How great is this?! I’ve always been intrigued to see how music can be expressed in all shapes and forms. Multiplatform music collaboration is something I have kept a keen eye on over the years and as a musician myself I love the idea that via the internet I could one day jam with my brother over 100 miles away without any real latency issues.

That dream is of course pretty much here. Below are a few links that show that the issues that have held collaboration back are being resolved at a rapid pace.

What I really want to know is, how long before I could potentially win the chance to perform with a musical legend from the comfort of my living room, whilst simultaneously broadcast live on TV?! I want to be able to perform live with musicians all over the world for Live Aid 2009!

eJamming – This is collaborative software that lets you jam and record a song with somebody anywhere in the world at the same time. Here is a blurb from Techcrunch:

“…allows musicians located anywhere to get together for jam sessions. Your drummer’s in New York, lead guitar is in India, your bass player is somewhere else, and you’re on keyboard. No problem. eJamming lets you jam anyway. And you can talk to the other musicians via a VOIP feature.”

Riffworks – This a audio recording tool with some great collaboration abilities.

Record and collaborate with musicians from all over the world using the RiffLink interface integrated into RiffWorks. Any musician can join your session and work with you at the same time on the same song. There’s even a built-in chat client.

Thanks to loop recording, RiffWorks has no latency or distance problems like some other online music collaboration programs. Each RiffWorks layer is instantly streamed to other current users as well as saved on the server for users who wish to contribute later. There’s nothing like it!”

Ninjam – It’s probably best to read this post in regards to what Ninjam is. In a nutshell it is an online real time collaborative music software that has a unique way of dealing with the latency issue.

“Ninjam has come up with a unique solution to circumvent this issue.
Ninjam leverages the problem itself to turn it to its own favor.
By making latency much longer than it really is, NINJAM creates the opportunity to create something that would have appeared otherwise impossible.

The latency in Ninjam is measured in measures, and the Ninjam client records and streams synchronized intervals of music between participants.
Just as the interval finishes recording, it begins playing on everyone else’s client. So when you play through an interval, you’re playing along with the previous interval of everybody else, and they’re playing along with your previous interval.

If this sounds pretty bizarre, it sort of is, until you get used to it, then it becomes pretty natural.”

Myonlineband.com – A collaborative community for making, collaborating and sharing music. This isn’t a realtime jamming platform, but a place to create and collaborate on a track by track basis.

Kompoz – Here is another community where you can upload, share and then collaborate on music you have created.

Es una aplicación (PC y MAC) muy sencilla similar al MSN pero musical, ¡si!, es como quedar en el bajo de algún amigo para tocar la guitarra, el bajo, el piano, el saxo, etc.

Pueden haber un maximo de 4 usuarios en una misma sala, cada uno desde su casa con su instrumento.

Para bajar el programa tienes que picar la imagen que dice: “Sing up now to download eJAMMING AUDiiO beta”, entonces te pedirá que te registres, es gratis, de momento, (por lo que he oído harán una versión gratis y otra de pago, esta ultima tendrá opciones mas avanzadas seguramente), pones lo que te piden, te bajas el programa, ellos te dan un número de serie que tienes que poner cuando inicias el programa por primera vez y ya.

Es muy sencilla de usar, pero antes de hacer nada tienes que configurar el programa.

En mi caso (Mac) tengo: Input Device: built-in input, que es la entrada de audio. Como Output Device: Built-in Ouput. Lo de Mix o Single lo tengo en Single.

En la pantalla principal aparecen las salas de los usuarios a los que te puedes conectar.

Bueno, eso ya lo investigáis vosotros que sino pierde encanto jaja.

I didn’t make CES this year so, I’m doing a bit of “web watching” and trying to stay current on the events.  

One keynote I sat through was the live webcast of Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini, eJamming’s Alan Jay Glueckman and front man Steve Harwell of SmashMouth.  This was an interesting and entertaining demo. 

As a musician I admire what eJaming software is all about.  They are enabling musicians to play together in real-time as if in the same room, but in actuality they could be across the world from each other.  The power of today’s PC’s and the internet make it all possible.  While there was some notable sync delays in the band being remote while Harwell sang on the CES stage — it was cool.  

This technology will only get better and truly encourages creativity, teaching options for kids and will expand the community of musicians. 

There were a couple of references to SmashMouth playing at the Intel party tonight…sorry I’ll miss that one.

Esta semana me ha sobresaltado la polémica relativa que ha levantado el post titulado “Quiero aprender tocar el saxo”. Si quieres ser periodista, crea polémica, captarás mucha más atención. He sido criticado duramente en el foro para saxofonistas Adolphe Sax, lo que me ha gratificado doblemente: ya sé que no haré carrera estudiando magisterio musical, y he descubierto un foro para saxofonistas la mar de interesante.

Esta semana también me ha comentado mi amigo Charly lo de siempre, que si conozco algún portal de internet donde encontrar músicos dispuestos a tocar y formar un grupo, petición muy deseada entre músicos. Charly, existe, aunque es un portal precario lo probé y me llamaron para grabar un disco, además, me reconocieron cuando dije que era el saxofonista de Superagente 86, ¡toma esa! – Charly fue compañero y teclista, junto con Sobornez entre otros. Lo volveremos a ser – Se llama Solomusicos. Debido a mi residencia en Alemania no pude grabar.

Pero hay mucho más. Se trata de plataformas colaborativas, en las que los músicos pueden tener jamms en directo online, o grabaciones sobre mezclas de otros compañeros. Yo no he tenido oportunidad de probarlas con nadie, pero tengo muchas ganas. Eliot Van Buskirk explica su experiencia y más cosas en este artículo de Wired. Por lo general, en estos portaleslos músicos españoles brillamos por nuestra ausencia, y abundan los americanos, DJs y el gremio de la música electrónica. Pero insisto que no los he probado realmente. La mayoría implican descargar un software para poder llevar a cabo la tarea.

El blog Edumusic también tiene muy buenas referencias, sobre todo de herramientas de internet relacionadas con la educación musical. Muy recomendable, lo sigo con frecuencia.

Барабанщик в Нью-Йорке, главный гитарист в Индии, бас-гитара ещё где-то, а ты на клавишных… Без проблем. eJamming позволяет это делать и более того, можно болтать с другими музыкантами через VOIP!
Всё, что вам понадобится – это цифровой инструмент (с поддержкой MIDI) и компьютер, подсоединённый к интернету. Загружаешь клиентскую программу (доступны версии для Mac'а и PC), и можешь собрать давно-развалившуюся группу опять вместе, или, например, найти других музыкантов через этот сервис. Демка здесь.

eJamming предоставляет одну неделю бесплатного использования, после чего взимается плата – $20 в месяц. Тарифные планы описаны здесь.

Интересно, как eJamming справляется с задержками в звуке… с которыми наверняка столкнулись бы музыканты. Они обсуждают этот вопрос здесь и заявляют что “запатентованные eJamming’ом алгоритмы задерживают звучание вашего инструмента до тех пор, пока не будет получена соответствующая порция музыкальной информации от других членов группы.” Они продолжают:

Музыканты организовывают подобные сейшены постоянно. Те, кто тестировал eJamming – включая самых профессиональных и скептически настроенных – привыкали очень быстро к подобным задержкам и многие осознали, что они могут спокойно играть с задержкой в 50-90 мс., когда часть группы находится на восточном побережье США, а другая – в восточной Европе.

Распределённые джем-сейшены… Круто, не правда-ли?
