John Halpern (REFUGE and Talks with the Dalai Lama) produced and directed this film on the flowering of Yoga & Culture in America focusing on the role of new arrivals Ekayani and the Tom Glide Space and pioneer DJ Cheb i Sabbah, the godfather of devotional and global electronic world music. Performances and backstage interviews with Cheb i Sabbah, Ekayani, and Brooklyn purveyor of conscious underground culture Jaimi Becker were shot in and around a three day festival in three locations. The film is a milestone documenting intriguing perspectives on the mystic traditions of the East transposed into the popular music of the West.

Celebrating Enlightenment & Freedom in Film, Music, Yoga & Dance

Dj Cheb I Sabbah’s North African and “Desi” fusions will be paired with the music of Brooklyn and French duo Ekayani and the Tom Glide Space whose own devotional electronica album Yoga on the Dance Floor and Sanskrit Mantras borrows heavily from Reggae Dub and Brazilian flavors with Bengali and Sanskrit being the primary languages. Saturday night’s event at the intimate Rose lounge is poised to deliver a late night dance party and ep release featuring the master Cheb i Sabbah spinning for the dance floor.  A special performance by vocalist Ekayani celebrates the release of  ”Here’s the Light Remixes”  with a South Africa’s Beat Pharmacy dj Brendon Moeller and Tom Glide. Sacred music , devotional electronica and a yoga class at Littlefield

Sunday’s all inclusive late afternoon and into the night offering suitably titled Yoga on the Dance floor is recommended for those wanting full immersion. It features a yoga class, music, and another dose of  devotional electronica. It all kicks off at 5pm with an All Level Vinyasa Yoga Class instructed by Julie Ziff Sint suitable for beginners with intermediate and advanced variations for a more challenging experience.(Participants are advised to bring a mat). The sacred world music of Gaura Vani As Kindred Spirits, a kirtan band weaving rich ethnic rhythms and melodies follows. Another ecstatic set of electronica with Cheb i Sabbah and Ekayani finishes off the evening. Cheb i Sabbah was born in Algeria of Berber (Amazigh) descent and moved to Paris as a teenager and became a DJ by chance. By the late 1980s, residing in San Francisco, he was internationally pushing boundaries on the dance floor, seeking ways to infuse Asian, Arabic and African sounds into the mix. Then as the “world music” movement unfolded, Cheb i Sabbah took the inspired step of recording traditional and classical musicians from India, Pakistan and Africa, effectively transforming those compositions into sonic landscapes, thus creating a new style of electronic music “composed” by a DJ.
With seven landmark recordings on the Six Degrees Records label, Sabbah remains a DJ at heart, but he is also something more.
“As a DJ you have ears,” says Sabbah, “this is my instrument, you know what you want to hear on the dance floor or in producing music.”
An innovator in one of the most contemporary musical realms, he is clearly committed to creating new forms.
“But at the same time,” says Sabbah, “the most important focus for me is to keep the musical tradition alive. For example, folk, trance and healing musicians are struggling to make a living and teach the young generations. Once those musicians go, it’s over, then what?”
As an “Outernational” DJ to defender of ancient traditions, Sabbah is a true musical iconoclast and visionary in the electronica scene. From the crowded confines of nightclubs to major festivals, Cheb i Sabbah enjoys a worldwide reputation as a magician of the dance floor. On stage he often spins accompanied by live musicians, dancers and massive projected visuals, interwoven and juxtaposed as the spirit moves him.

An appreciation by us: It was just so gratifying to see scads of people dancing , a happy AV staff that wanted the music to go on longer than scheduled (“This is fun!”)  and a beaming program director. The AV techs climbed up to the balcony to add more disco lights during  the dance party and volia! we were undulating with orbs of lightwaves. It was all just wonderful. All ages, all shapes from 9 to 93. Wah! was the icing on the cake. She is someone you can see really appreciates mantras. It’s written all over her face and seeing her groove to the music was the greatest review we could have received.
