More people in the area are expressing their interest in Esperanto. When I began studying Esperanto

More people in the area are expressing their interest in Esperanto. When I began studying Esperanto in earnest (just a couple of months ago), I was disappointed that there was no active group in the area. Well, that’s no longer the case. Our last meeting saw two new people present, one of whom was a fifth-grader who is strongly inspired by what Esperantists call “the internal idea” of the language–namely, the idea that if everyone learned this simple –but expressive and powerful–language as a common second language (not replacing anyone’s native languages), misunderstandings and strife throughout the world could be greatly reduced through better communication.

Because of this internal idea, Esperanto has grown a large culture of people who hope for international understanding and peace. Of course, not all Esperantists are nice people, but most of us are! Check us out!

Pli homoj cxi tie esprimas ilian intereson Esperantan.

Venu kaj vidu!

Five people attended the first meeting of the Esperanto Club of Hampton Roads, including a two-year-old boy who is a likely candidate to become one of the comparatively few native speakers of the language. We had a great time getting to know each other, and practicing Esperanto, which is new for all of us. For now, we’re continuing to meet every other Friday night at Fair Grounds Coffee, on the second floor of Texture 806 Baldwin Ave. Norfolk, VA. Come and join us!

Please note however, that the next meeting will being at 6:30 pm instead of 7:00

Norfolk, VA. Venu kaj lernu kun ni!

Basic Courses Esperanto is far easier to learn than most natural languages, but it does take a littl

Basic Courses

Esperanto is far easier to learn than most natural languages, but it does take a little bit of work. Fortunately, only about 20 hours of study and practice is necessary to acquire a basic vocabulary and a good sense of Esperanto grammar. Here are some of the best ways to get started:

Lernu!

Lernu! is a portal Esperanto for learning Esperanto, including a wide selection of beginning courses in Esperanto, forums, information about the language, and much more.

Kurso de Esperanto

Kurso de Esperanto is a downloadable computer program which guides you through all the basics of Esperanto in ten simple lesssons, complete with sound files, reading, writing, and speaking practice, and the ability to have your work checked and commented on via e-mail by an Esperanto teacher.

Esperanto-USA

E-USA (also known as ELNA) is the national Esperanto association for the United States. They offer a free ten-lesson course with an instructor via snail- or e-mail, and have nearly two thousand titles of books and recordings in (or about) Esperanto available. You need not be a member to take advantage of their services, but members have the advantage of a nice discount. E-USA also organizes a national Esperanto conference each year, as well as sends delegates to international conferences. All the books in print mentioned on this page should be available from E-USA.

Teach Yourself Esperanto

TYE is an outstanding course book for English speakers beginning the international language. Unfortunately, it’s out-of-print, but there are many copies out there, as any search for used books will show. Prices tend to fluctuate from week to week.

Esperanto: Learning and Using the International Language

Probably the best book in print for English speakers beginning the language. It’s divided in three sections: a short history and description of the language, ten short lessons, and an Esperanto reader which continues the lessons while introducing the student to Esperanto literature and usage. It’s also very reasonably priced, especially if you order from E-USA.

There’s enough interest now to announce the club. A friend and I met together a week ago, and tossed around some ideas on what our E-o gatherings might look like; then I heard from another interested party that they’ll come to the next meeting. In addition, Kat, the leader of the previous local group, is going to inform the members of the former group about our new startup.

I’m just a beginner … but I’m learning fast. You can, too! Come and visit us at Fair Grounds Coffee in Ghent, Norfolk, Virginia, this Friday at 7:00 pm!

Venu kaj vizitu nin ĉe Fair Grounds Kafejo in Ghent, Norfolk, Virginio, ĉi tiu venonta vendredo je 7:00 ptm!

Yes, we’re still meeting, and it’s still Sundays at 7:00 at FairGrounds (and we might be outgrowing it soon!) I also apologize for the delay in setting up the new site. I’m working on it again, and it should be operational soon. The URL will be bonege.com (with esperantosource.com as another domain name) but please don’t visit it until it’s ready. I’ll let you know!

The new site for The Esperanto Club of Hampton Roads will launch later this week. Unlike the present site, our club notes and schedules will be only a small part of the new site, which will mostly be structured as an “Esperanto source” for English speakers interested in the other international language.
