Ah, cartoons from yesteryear. Your folksy, wide-ranging racism was family fun for white audiences everywhere. Then, somewhere between 1990 and 1996, television networks realized that maybe, just maybe we shouldn’t re-run old toons that portray all Indians as red-nosed drunks, black people as watermelon-loving, lazy slobs and Asians as some sort of human/beaver wearing glasses. And this is why I love Rhymefest, because he made an entire music video illustrating how fucking ridiculous America was not more than 60 years ago.

Talk about white guilt. Even our cartoons were racist.

It’s almost awe inspiring, that back in the day cartoonists from Disney and Warner Brothers could just draw the most offensive caricatures of minorities without even thinking about it. Look at that video. Like Dave Chappelle said, “Have you ever experienced something so racist, that you weren’t even mad? Like it happened to someone else?”

In terms of the music, I have no idea when El Che is supposed to come out, but Rhymefest has dug his own hole into hip-hop obscurity by failing to release an albums for years. He’s still one of my favorite emcees of all time, because of his deftness at story-telling, humor and wordplay, but I can’t blame people for not being into him. He doesn’t put out enough records.

Please ‘fest, make more music. And hurry.

I know that there are some emcees who read the site so when I saw Rhymefest post this via twitter, i figured it was worth a post on here. It is a contest for any artist to submit a verse and be featured on his upcoming album, El Che.  Instead of copying all the info bout the contest, I will just give you the link.

Este es un ejemplo más del resultado que tienen las ideas foquistas de revolución por las armas que durante varias décadas han fomentado la lucha armada, la guerra civil y la pobreza en los países centroamericanos.  Es probable que este líder antisocial español continúe su trabajo desestabilizador en el país y no dudaría en que la politización del tema ocupe los periódicos amarillistas durante los próximos días.

La historia guatemalteca es el triste escenario de cómo masas ignorantes de indígenas han sido manipuladas y utilizadas por grupos socialistas que adaptaron el pensamiento marxista-leninista de revolución proletaria a una lucha revolucionaria de guerra racial reivindicativa que han costado la muerte a miles de guatemaltecos.

El diario continúa con el reporte siguiente, que tan sólo me recuerda al inicio del levantamiento guerrilero en el municipio de Ixcán a mediados de los años 70, cuando el grupo guerrilero “Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres” invadió el territorio y asaltó, intimidó, secuestró, expropió y asesino a campesinos y pobladores de la región,

“Tengo 300.000 indígenas armados dispuestos a levantarse en armas si el Gobierno no respeta los acuerdos”, afirmó. “Aquí los niños se te mueren en los brazos. El Gobierno sigue practicando un ‘apartheid’ muy peligroso contra los indígenas y si la comunidad internacional no interviene seremos nosotros quienes actuemos”, añadió (El Monje).

El nombre de “El Monje” es además, sugestivo y coherente con la participación histórica de miembros de la Iglesia Católica durante el conflicto armado que duró 36 años.  Durante ese período, grupos de sacerdotes y monjas enviados a Guatemala apoyaron el levantamiento guerrillero durante el conflicto armado guatemalteco y se encargaron de la indoctrinación de cientos de jóvenes que en el futuro cercano habrían de unirse a las filas revolucionarias.

Aquellos pueblos que olvidan su historia están condenados a repetirla.  Aquellos que engañan a los pobres e ignorantes están condenando y matando a miles de inocentes.  Ojala y este hombre sea capturado muy pronto.

“And in all this history, after so many years, he inspires us to continue fighting, changing not only Bolivia, but all of Latin America and, better, the world,” Morales said.”

Now that Bolivia has a strong Left leader (Evo Morales) in charge – you can almost see ‘mi hermano’ smiling.

Après trois mois de travail en Angleterre, on avait planifié de venir voir Nic et de passer un jour à Marseille. Il nous avait juste dit qu’il avait tout arrangé pour qu’on puisse rester à un local de fans de l’OM. On savait aussi vaguement que cette hinchada (1) aimait notre pays et que les supporters s’identifiaient avec le Ché et Maradona, deux des plus importantes icônes de notre culture. Mais Nic ne nous avait pas totalement mis au parfum, et on ne savait pas encore que cela allait devenir le meilleur weekend de tout notre séjour en France !

I am currently on my way back to school so that is why I have not been making too many posts. Do not worry though, because I have a few ideas for series that will be informative and entertaining, and of course, bringing good music! In the mean time I have found two new songs by the artist Rhymefest out of Chicago.

He is a grammy award winning rapper who has worked with artists from Kanye West to Talib Kweli to Ghostface Killah.  He is currently working on a new album but the songs “Binary Code” and “Angry Black Man” did not make the cut.  I wrote a review of his most recent mixtape The Manual, for my first review ever.  I have also posted a link to his Michael Jackson tribute mixtape that was made 2 years before MJ’s death.  He is one of my personal favorite rappers so I try to show people his music when I can and an incredibly talented guy, I can’t wait until El Che finally drops!

La petite-fille du leader révolutionnaire Che Guevara, Lydia Guevara, fera partie de la prochaine campagne pour l’alimentation végétarienne de l’organisation People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), qui sera lancée plus tard cet été à Buenos Aires.

Guevara, 24 ans, s’affiche avec le béret, rendu célèbre par son grand-père et torse nu, couvert par un harnais complet de carottes qui remplacent des balles. La cause a changé et les moyens aussi … Je me demande  si son grand-père aurait apprécié…

To Celebrate Che Guevara Day, I’m re-posting this tribute to the late great humanitarian Che Guevara who would’ve turned 80 today, if the CIA hadn’t killed him, cut off his hands, and sent them to Fidel Castro as a warning. 

Apparently if you go as far as cutting someone’s hands off, the warning clearly is – we are beyond evil – we are completely and totally insane.  

The fight against imperialism, fascism, the CIA, the elite and all centers of power continue today, so ever stronger, thanks to the actions of this man.

El otro día, bajo el nostálgico sol de los domingos, me detuve en un puesto de morocho en el centro de la ciudad. Busqué la fila para hacer mi pedido y  a los pocos segundos un hombre con boina y barba se ubicó detrás mío. Al principio no lo reconocí porque estaba distraído pensando en la similitud  de sabor que hay entre el arroz con leche  y el morocho, pero después de un escrutinio más o menos cesudo, lo reconocí: era el Ché.

-¡Ché! ¿Qué miércoles haces aquí? -dije yo esperanzada de  escuchar alguna revelación política o algo por el estilo.

-Haciendo fila para comprar una tarrina de morocho…ah y un sánduche porque tengo un poco de hambre.

-Oh…Oye y una pregunta…¿Dónde está la revolución?

-Lamentablemente…en todo el mundo.

In the Midst of the era of hipster chic and southern bop and sway, the lyricist is still relevant. More so than the lyricist is the ability to connect to fans on a level that supersedes the radio single or the mainstream video. Chicago artist Rhymefest has taken his music and hit the streets with it by literally staying with fans as a means to showcase his music and connect on a face to face level. In an industry that is falling maybe if all artists showcased this type of dedication, there sales would stop plummeting. And mind you this man is the Grammy award winning co-writer of Jesus Walks and various other hits.
