Our family has been on an adventure for the last 5 years moving from state to state to follow a business career. With all the new places we were always trying to figure out where we were and how to get where we wanted to be. When GPS products came out to replace the paper maps (remember trying to refold them) and map books, we thought it was a great concept. Now we have one in each car. My wife has the deluxe model that routes her around the traffic problems. These devices offer a plethora (a wonderful word, meaning almost countless, I learned from El Guapo while watching the Three Amigos) of options and settings. One of the most enjoyable is choosing the voice. My wife chose a male voice with a British accent and named him Mo Bill or Bill. Bill seems to be a loyal and effective guide for her. I chose a female voice also with a British accent. I didn’t name mine because I didn’t want my wife to worry about me developing a relationship. I think my device must have felt slighted and ever since has been very effective in making sure that I did not get to my selected destination without numerous detours. Her favorite trick is telling me in her clipped accent that I need to turn right without saying exactly where just as I am approaching a street that could be the correct street, when in fact it is not the right street and there is no easy way to get back on course. Last night she really got me good. She blurted out “turn right” just as I came to a street just before the one I really wanted. Being used to instant and complete obedience to female commands (in spite of what my wife thinks) I turned right and quickly heard the dreaded word “recalculating” that indicates that she had gotten me again. This time she really got me good because as tried to get back on track I found that the next entrance to the freeway I wanted was currently under construction and closed. So I wandered around for a few minutes before figuring out how to get on the freeway I wanted. Another favorite trick of hers is the “make a u-turn” command. She usually uses this one when she senses that I am wondering if I should have turned left when I turned right. So in order to get back on course I usually spend a few minutes wandering around and a strange neighborhood only to find that she meant that I should have continued quite a distance before making the u-turn in order to get to a location on the other side of a divided road with no direct access. For the most part her directions are correct it is just how, when, and what she says that seems to get me lost. This is definitely crossing into the realm of things only my wife should be able to do. I did not have a problem getting lost when I used paper maps or even with the map programs on my PDA it seems to be only with this female avatar that directs my car. Maybe I should break down and give her a name and hope my wife understands.

If you only read the first paragraph of this Jim Michaels’ USA TODAY story, you might walk away with a nice feeling about civic life in Afghanistan:

KABUL — U.S. and Afghan officials have agreed on a new nationwide strategy that will funnel millions of dollars in foreign aid to villages that organize “neighborhood watch”-like programs to help with security.

The plan will provide an incentive for Afghan tribal leaders to form their own militias and guard against Taliban insurgents, says Mohammad Arif Noorzai, an adviser to President Hamid Karzai on security and tribal issues.

Wait, what? That doesn’t sound like calling in graffiti artists or phoning in a tip about a shady-looking person at the convenient store. Let’s ask Nathan Hodge for more details:

In Afghanistan’s Wardak Province, the U.S. military has overseen a modest experiment in giving Kalashnikovs, cash, and power to local militias to keep insurgents out of rural communities.

Now the Afghan government and the U.S. military are set to try the experiment on a much larger scale. Reporting from Kabul, Jim Michaels of USA Today describes the Community Defense Initiative, a program to create “neighborhood watch”-style militias in more villages throughout Afghanistan.

What the hell is the matter with you people?! Who looks at Afghanistan and says, “I know what this place needs! More Kalashnikovs!”

Just your standard-issue Neighborhood Watch membership incentive.

And what is wrong with Jim Michaels?! Why would you think that a program to arm roving bands of local heavies with automatic rifles should be described as a “neighborhood watch”-like program? Only about halfway through the article do we find out that he borrows this little euphemism for a cash-and-bullets payoff scheme came from a NATO characterization. Jim! Do you get paid to do stenography for NATO? I thought you were a journalist. I only ask because it took me about 2 minutes to confirm my suspicion that the actual Neighborhood Watch program does not in fact hand out Kalashnikov rifles and bullets to local Joe Blows.

El Guapo: *Not* a good way to stabilize Afghanistan.

The last thing Afghanistan needs is another shipment of weapons into the unstable areas. We already know that lots of our weapons end up in the hands of anti-government forces, who then use them to kill Americans and other Afghans. We would be much, much better off (to say nothing of the Afghans) enabling the local people to undertake civilian-based defense. But first things first: let’s get it through our heads that accepting benign euphemisms for violent, short-sighted policies only serves to obscure reality and cloud the policy choices before the United States.

Well we have been doing some thangs in the past month or so since the Pro Lo show. We’ll just start the list now:

The weekend after we started our First Friday After Class Series. Its on the first Friday of every month in Der Rathskellar  - Memorial Union. Its where you are done with class, and you eat/drink merrily in a German beer hall. Relaxing to jams. The FFAC friends.

Next, we did a grip of private parties you can’t know about. Sorry. More or less basements and parties.

And well if you weren’t around Madison for Halloween you missed a lot of Bangerville. A lot.

We did a three night marathon at our new home the Pub. Restored from its former glory (yes it was a glorious place before, picnic tables and all) we took it over. Night after night after night.

Pretty big weekend as far as news worthy things go.  Walter Kronkite shit the bed, Tom Watson threw up in his mouth at the British Open, It was the 40th anniversary of the Moon Walk that DIDN’T include slumber parties with little leaguers  AND I put in a horseshoe pit, thus fulfilling a summer long dream. 

Even bigger news though, is that with the help of Grizz, we were able to pick up a grill yesterday and as it stands, I am the front runner for the best Griller in the Mid Coast Region.  I honestly don’t know what I’m doing as far as timing and prep work goes.  But what I possess instinctively can’t be taught. 

But even with that dubious honor on my shoulders, the biggest news over the weekend is that some doorknob on the space station hung a collosal rat and choked out the $19 million throne.  Zero Gravity toilet issues might rank up there as the worst situation ever.  Like I said in that previous post with the low bridge/porta potty’s pic, Human shit is the worst shit on the planet.   All I can picture is blobs of diarrhea slowly creeping around the space station waiting to engulf an unsuspecting scientist.  In the words of Ari Gold….BOOOM!  There’s your next movie.

K’Naan w/ Afrikan Boy – TIA (This Is Africa) Remix

Here is another one we like. This beat is damn good and in all honesty its a fun song. And for some reason K’Naan sounds like Lil’ Wayne on the chorus without the vocoder since that is dead. And its nice to see Afrikan Boy around again. His song ‘I Went to Lidl’ was an interesting story to say the least.

Jelly Master – Cheasleauen

Haven’t heard much about this girl before but she seems on par with the Amanda Blank/Thunderheist path but with slower raps. Personally I like Amanda Blank a little more (who will be in Madison 11 September at the Majestic w/ Matt + Kim), especially this track with Spank Rock from Bmore City’s Aaron Lacrate.

Everybody loves Top 10 lists.  You can argue, debate, agree (although very rarely) on them all day long!  So I’ll be churning out some Top 10 lists periodically and want your input.

The first ever Top 10 is The Largest BMI’s in Baseball.

For the uninformed, BMI is your Body Mass Index.  I’m pretty unscientific here so we don’t have any actual BMI readings but by looking at these pictures, I think you could say they are pretty accurate.

I got this idea by watching the Orioles a couple times the last week.  I determined that Ty Wigginton must be the most overweight SS I have ever seen – it’s not a position you typically find fatties.  Then a few days later I sat down and watched George Sherrill pitch and I must say I have seen very few left-handed closers who are less than 6-feet tall and are near 250 lbs. on the scale.  It made for an interesting sight, as you think of most closers to be Jonathan Papelbon or Mariano Rivera size.

So without further ado, The Top 10 Largest BMI’s In Baseball:

10: Dmitri Young

He’s listed at 6′2″, 295 lbs. by the Nationals but has reported to several Spring Trainings north of 300.  Anybody with the nickname “Da Meat Hook” automatically makes the list!

9. Bobby Jenks

Although his dimensions are smaller than those of Dmitri Young, Jenks gets style points for being a closer.  One of just two on the list, I’m not real sure how “intimidating” a guy who’s cheeks and stomach jiggle when he pitches but I think once his fastball touches triple digits, intimidation is the least of a hitter’s worries.

8. Bartolo Colon

245 lbs?  Really White Sox (that’s what they have him listed as)?  Unless he dropped a lot of weight from the picture above I find that hard to believe.  We do have our first actual BMI measurement though.  According to this source, Bartolo Colon’s BMI is officially 34.9 which would make him the unhealthiest Cy Young Award winner ever!

7. Prince Fielder

Look at those thighs!  Those things are monstrous.  I think the baggy uniform makes him appear heavier than he really is but the guy can flat out rake.  He might win the award for largest vegetarian ever!

6. Sidney Ponson

An official Dutch “Knight”, the Aruba native also has some monster thighs but an even more impressive beer belly.  We know it all came from beer because he’s been charged with a couple of alcohol-related offenses.

5. Antonio Alfonseca

This is one of the greatest photographs of all time.  And it doesn’t even showcase his six fingers!

4. David Wells

What more is there to say about David Wells?  I still remember that perfect game he threw but I’m pretty sure that’s the only on-field performance he’ll ever be remembered for.  He was quite entertaining off the field and now you can get even more of him on TV!

3. C.C. Sabathia

This picture only showcases the guy’s gut… but he has some thighs on par with Prince Fielder’s.  Makes me wonder if the Yankees are paying guys $1 million for every pound they weigh.

2. Walter Young

Anyone who lists their weight at 315 lbs. automatically gets Top 3 consideration.  His BMI is 38.2 which makes him the most “obese” player in MLB history despite playing just 14 career games.

1. Rich “El Guapo” Garces

“El Guapo” automatically wins the No. 1 spot because – as far as I’m aware – he is the only baseball player to ever have his own Bobble Belly.  Yes, it really is true – here is a picture to prove it.  He kind of reminds me of Guillermo from the Jimmy Kimmel Show.  Check out this photo of El Guapo and see if you agree.

Honorable Mention: Alex Fernandez

Fernandez was a child-hood favorite of mine so I’m a little jealous.  But he might have put on more weight than any player I can think of throughout the course of his career.  Look at his baseball card from 1994.  It was quite clear that he was on the “rice and beans” diet.

Who else should be in this Top 10 that didn’t make the cut?  That could even lead us into other sports and the largest BMI’s in sports in general.  Comment and let me know!

Recently there was a post over at the Goliath to our David of blogs freedarko.com challenging their dear readers’ memories concerning the actual happenings of basketball contests versus how the NBA wants us to remember them. I was immediately reminded of the “Where will amazing happen this year?” commercial featuring Dwayne Wade.   Now, I freely admit that my memory lapses are frequent and my recall ain’t what it used to be. In other words I couldn’t tell you from which year that Dwayne Wade layup/Gerald Wallace impression is, but that commercial immediately brings up in my mind the 2006 NBA finals and brings up into my mouth my last meal from my stomach.

I have a visceral reaction to the mention of the ‘06 Heat/Mavs series because, at least in my memory, it was like watching the NBA die again after rising from death during those ‘04 and ‘05 finals when it was teams playing against one another or at least “Big Threes” playing against teams or other “Big Threes”. After those fun and competitive series it seemed as though the basketball black hole strategy was back.

I don’t want to come off as some sort of curmudgeon or traditionalist.  I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Orlando launch trey bombs and Hedo Turkoglo run the point forward in ways even the Prez appreciates.  It has also been pleasureable watching the high-wire, clusterpooping, head scratchers that are both benches in the Western Conference finals (in different ways of course).

Less enthusiastically and with alarm it seems that the beautiful basketball period of Lebron James’ career is officially over or at least on hiatus in the second half of these games. Being confronted with the continued ineptitude of his teammates on the offensive end (Delonte West a slight exception in game 4), we viewers of hoops have been subjected to the back up and drive, basketball bull-rush version of Lebron on seemingly every possession.  He inevitably ends up on the free throw line just like Dwayne Wade did in June of ‘06.

The interesting part about this is that at least during Game 4 the strategy did not help them win and although outcomes often take a backseat to other more ethereal concerns here at The New Enthusiast, hopefullly the Cavs can find again Lebron’s missing beauty at the end of Game 5 Thursday night. Hell, they might even pull out a victory.

Jacoby Ellsbury has been lifting- he attended Athlete’s Performance Institute’s off-season program along with pretty much everybody else and their mother. According to reports, he comes in to camp weighing 190 pounds, which is 10 more than last year. Dan Shaughnessy reports that the center fielder is noticeably bigger through the chest and arms. According to the second year player, the extra muscle was needed for his body to be prepared for, “all the diving in the outfield and sliding on the bases. I didn’t do this to hit more home runs. I just want to be as strong as I can without losing any speed. You don’t want to get too big.”

I kind of hate this notion from players that gaining muscle will automatically slow you down. In many instances, adding muscle will actually make you faster, especially if you do it by performing explosive exercises, like weight lifting at a high intensity. But I digress. It’s great to see that Jacoby is taking his career seriously, and I think it speaks to his maturity as a player. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him reach Johnny Damon levels of productivity in the outfield because of the considerable skills and major league mentality that he has shown.

- Jed Lowrie told reporters he’s excited about the prospect of competing for the shortstop job because, “It’s a competition that’s going to make this team better and it’s going to make me better as a player. There’s things I know I can improve on. Staying healthy, obviously, is a big thing for me and I want to continue to refine my swing and work on situational hitting.”

That is certainly true, there’s always something that can be worked on. But as I watched the supposedly re-invigorated and bulked up Lugo tap out on another weak ground ball on Sunday, I couldn’t help but wonder how much worse Lowrie could get and still be the most talented shortstop on the team. 30% worse numbers? 50%?

- Curt Schilling is talking comeback. The linked article takes you to his blog where he discusses exactly what he’s thinking, click it if you want to go strait to the horses mouth.

I wouldn’t put it past Schilling at all to make a comeback after serious shoulder injury at the age of 42, but he has to get cracking on getting back into shape now. I’ve seen the guy a handful of times over the last couple of times when he makes appearances in local media etc. and he is, to say the least, not in playing shape. He’s a little soft around the mid section right now.

This was never a problem for Rich “El Guapo” Garces or David Wells, so again, I wouldn’t put this past him, and even further Schilling has completely morphed into a guy who can get by with intelligent pitch-calling and competitiveness. But I just have a feeling that Schilling, who has experienced ample arm problems throughout his career, would see more arm trouble if he were to try to pitch with that large of a frame.

Oh, and here’s my picture of the day, I found it while I was researching this post. It’s the aforementioned El Guapo:

0800h – The clock, which actually is a mobile phone, rings its alarm. Turn it off. Go back to sleep.

0900h – Get up, get dressed and walk the Boo.

1028h – Get in from walking the Boo. Doing a bit of random Interneting until 1100h.

1100h – Go down to the laundry room and put the tow first loads in (separate machines: one dark colors, one other colors). Ran out of fabric softener.

1105h – Breakfast while watching a lecture on additives in food.

1130h – Start preparing the dishes, get interrupted by phone call.

1200h – Stop talking on the phone go down to the laundry room to take out the loads from before, and put them in the dryer and the drying cabbinet, and put two new ones: Blue jeans and white (again seperate machines). Last loads of the day!

1205h – Not the last loads of the day. As I get back from the laundry room I found the dog being sick all over the couch.

1206h – Taking all the covers from the back and seat cussions off the couch. Place them in a pile. They need to be washed.

1210h – Giving the dog food. He seems all right. Making myself coffee.

1229h – Coffe break!

1249h – Chatting with El guapo whilst drinking coffee.

1255h – Down to the laundry room with loads 5 and 6. Picking up todays mail.

1300h – Continuing with the dishes (see 1130h).

1307h – Doing some general tidying up. (I have to wait for the dish water to cool a bit. The water I poured into the zink was too hot.)

1332h – Done with the dishes! Organising the trash (I’ll get to explaining that one).

1341h – Changing light bulbs where needed. (Two in the hall, one in the large bedroom and one in the small bedroom.)

1349h – Going down to the laundry room with the 7:th load, two pillow cases I forgot before. I really hope that there isn’t some laundry lurking around here waiting to be found. Even if there is: I won’t do it. I have had it with laundry today. At least the laundering part, the sofa covers are drying as we speak. I also took out the trash. Three bags of trash. (See 1332h.) We are heavy on recycling here in Göteborg so we sort our trash. I was now down to the trash deposit, no we do not have a trash shoot in the hallway, we have a deposit in the middle of the yard, a building for itself, the cleanest trash room you’ll ever see, Hard Plastics, Compost and Burnable. (Everything is burnable I guess but it’s a special category; soft plastics mostly.) We also have, as categories, colored glass, plain glass, paper, carton, wellpapp, batteries, light bulbs, fluorescent lights and major trash. I really hope all this sorting is god for the environment.

1412h – Re-writing lecture notes. (Feeding them into my computer, reading them over.)

1435h – Done with re-writing one of two lecture notes. Stopping with that for a bit and continuing with the general tidying up thing (a lot of stuff isn’t where it is supposed to be in this appartment).

1440h – Didn’t generally tidy up. Rang an old friend and checked if we, Camilla and I could ride with him and his girlfriend to another old friend and his, and his girlfriends, birthday party. We probably could. Now we need a dog sitter.

1453h – Down to the laundry room and out with the Boo.

1516h – Back from the laundry room and walking the Boo. 1. I really hope the sofa covers dry up there in the drying cabbinet, they seemed very damp right now and we only have the laundry room until 1700h. 2. The Boo and I, mainly, if not only, the Boo, just went for a leg raiser around the rock, the Gigantic Rock that is!

1518h – Start making lunch (a bit late but so was breakfast), left over vegetarian stew so all I have to do is boil some pasta. During the boil I fold laundry, not the laundry from today though, no, last weeks laundry! Not yet folded. (Note to self: Do not, I repeat; do not put things on hold… nor postpone things).

1548h – Lunch! Also: Rob called and said that the guys over at cdon.com thought that our record had done all right. We did not get any exact numbers, we’re going to get them next week, but still! All right is all right in my book!

1558h – Done eating. Maybe just a tad fast… Starting dinner! Pizza. First prepare the dough, let it sit for an hour thenRock’n'Roll… but we have no yeast.

1559h – Run down to the store to get yeast… and maybe a little milk.

1610h – Back from the grocery store. Besides the stuff in the latest entry I also got Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Bananas and Apple Juice. It always is like that. You always get more than you think. I also popped into the laundry room to see hoe the sofa-covers were doing, and a god thing i did! I ran into the person who has booked the laundry room time after ours. i nicely asked her if I would be able to keep my sofa-covers in the drying cabinet after my time has run out, after 17ooh, no problem she said! Great! Might get them dry after all. Since the pizza takes about 1h25min to make (dough included) I’ve decided to put that on hold for a bit. 

1617h – Folding more laundry.

1637h – Done folding the laundry then neatly placing on the shelves. Between us Camilla and I have too many pairs of socks, TOO MANY I TELL YOU! I also made the bed, a bit late but now it’s done.

1638h – Taking down the last piece of Christmas decoration… A black star in the bed room.

1642h – Placing the now dry dishes on shelves and in drawers. All whilst listening to Familjen.

1648h – Preparing the apartment, picking up knick-knacks, guitars and dog bowls and such off the floor, for vacuuming!

1658h – Apparently Bosse did not like the way I made the bed. Just found him in it, the bed, and the covers were thrown around in a not-made-bed like matter, or perhaps a Bosse-made-bed matter…

1711h – Done with the first round of vacuuming in the living room. When I later put back the sofa-covers on ther will be feathers and stuff on the floor once again (down filling).

1712h – Re-writing lecture note two of two.

1721h – For the first time today I am starting to feel a little tired.

1730h – Down to the laundry room to get the sofa-covers… I hope there dry!

1801h – Camillas home, the covers are on the sofa and I’ve folded the last pieces of laundry. (I naturally forgot a big bag in the laundry room.)

1803h – Camilla said that she could do the vacuuming! WooHoo!

1804h – Continuing with the lecture Re-Write.

1815h – Done re-writing the second of two lectures!

1816h – Taking a well earned shower.

1832h – Done showering and now I smell like a bed of roses… IRON, I mean Iron. I smell like a bed… FACTORY! I smell like a factory of iron, steel and fire! (That sounds awful.) On wit pizza-dough making!

1847h – Now the dough has to sit for an hour. I am going to read a friends home exam in the philosophy of social science. I need to because I need to find one argument for Holism and one against Positivism.

1903h – Done for the day… just pizza and TV!
