Desde el sello londinense Air Recordings, propiedad del gran artista Ali B, nos llega la promo de su nuevo lanzamiento realizado por Diverted y títulado “Big Baby Fear“, pista procedente del Album de debut de los mismos artistas editado bajo Air en este mismo año, además, en el lanzamiento acompañan a la producción original dos estupendos remixes de los artistas Mr No Hands y Nick Thayer.

Revisión:

1. Diverted – Big Baby Fear (Diverted Club Edit)

En esta versión de esta elegante pista del grupo Diverted nos muestran una pista más enfocada a la pista de baile, con un ritmo Breaks bastante bueno y una clara influencia al Electro House y en el mejor Funky, unas baterías perfectamente cuidadas y montadas sobre grandes bajos sintéticos, sin duda, es una pista perfecta para este sello ya que goza de una clara elegancia en su producción, vocales perfectamente cuidadas y una atmosfera muy happy. Los toques de piano y esa atmosfera son un trabajo sobervio.

2. Diverted – Big Baby Fear (Mr No Hand Remix)

El señor No Hands está demostrando que es capaz de superarse a cada lanzamiento que edita, en esta ocasión nos encontramos con una remezcla algo más oscura que la pista original, un gran montaje en esta pista Breaks que goza de una gran atmosfera, grandes juegos de batería muy bien controlados y montados sobre una base tipo Amen que se deja ver de vez en cuando, una linea de bajo muy crujiente y juguetona que invita a bailar a cualquiera, efectos perfectamente cuidados y una segunda subida perfecta para esta remezcla, sin duda un gran trabajo.

3. Diverted – Big Baby Fear (Nick Thayer Remix)

En esta tercera pista nos encontramos con una versión enfocada más al Electro House por parte de Nick Thayer, una gran pista con grandes cambios de ritmos, una base bastante bien creada y marcada montada bajo una pequeña base Breaks, bajos subgraves muy bien diseñados y juguetones, grandes lineas melódicas bastante curiosas, un buen manejo de la atmosfera aplicando pequeños ecos. Buen trabajo.

A couple of weeks ago I was browsing the Last.fm pages as usual to find new music I could listen to. What I got was a group called the Starlifters. Their style is a mix of french/filter house and electro and was formed by Daniel Chelan (Beat Gates) and Zvonimir Garashich (Switch). They have so far released two EP’s as well a 50 minute classic techno/french house mix.

Desde el Reino Unido nos llega el nuevo lanzamiento de Dusted Breaks, el sello inglés cuenta con una nueva pista del grupo formado por Salad Shaker & Dr Oetker más conocidos como J*O*K*R, con su nueva pista “On Point” podemos encontrar los remixes de Myagi, Jay Stewart, Joebot y Udi.

1. J*O*K*R – On Point (Original Mix)

La pista original de este lanzamiento es una mezcla de Breaks y Electro House bastante bien trabajada, con partes de baterias Breaks y una mayor parte Electro House, un ritmo muy pistero el conseguido en todo momento, con grandes juegos de diferentes basslines típicos del mejor Electro House, buenos juegos vocales y un gran manejo de la atmosfera y los efectos, además de grandes riffs melódicos. Sin duda una buena pista.

2. J*O*K*R – On Point (Myagi Remix)

Manteniendo las vocales y parte de la ambientación de la producción original, Myagi nos presenta su particular vision Breaks de esta pista, con un gran manejo de las lineas de bajo perfectamente encajadas en las baterias, pequeños riffs de guitarras y grandes melodias acompañan la pista hasta alcanzar el climax. Sin duda una de las mejores pistas de Myagi.

3. J*O*K*R – On Point (Jay Stewart Remix)

Le toca el turno a Jay, que nos abre la pista con un gran juego de percusiones, y nos presenta unas baterias muy bien desarrolladas y marcadas, un buen juego de subgraves y peuqeñas melodias minimalistas acompañan la pista, en la cual se crea una buena atmosfera, pequeñas melodias acidas se disparan y se alternan de vez en cuando, su segunda parte es muy percusiva y es bastante buena!

4. J*O*K*R – On Point (Joebot Remix)

En este remix de Joebot nos volvemos a encontrar con grandes percusiones y una batería Breaks perfectamente marcada y con varios juegos de scratch. Encontramos pequeños juegos con las vocales originales, hasta que llegamos al climax y nos encontramos con un bajo crujiente y grueso acompañado de riffs melódicos y un buen juego de baterias. Joebot se crece en esta pista y desarrolla una producción bastante original y bien trabajada.

5. J*O*K*R – On Point (Udy Remix)

Udy nos presenta la segunda pista Electro House del lanzamiento, un gran remix con pequeñas influencias del Dub Step. La pista mantiene un gran ritmo en casi toda su extensión, unos bajos muy sinteticos y gruesos marcan el ritmo junto a los juegos vocales, creando una atmosfera bastante pistera , sin duda un gran remix Electro House por parte de esta joven promesa.

Dragonfly - 1215 Conn. Ave

It was December 2006, and I was playing every Friday night at this cool bar/lounge called “Dragonfly.” Situated in the heart of DC, “Dragonfly” to me was a great venue that served tasty food and was not as commercial as other venues nearby.

Many people would use “Dragonfly” as a meeting spot, or as a place to pre-party, before continuing on with the night. I was a resident there for about 8 months and I enjoyed it because I was able to invite many of my good friends to join me and throw a party.

“Dragonfly” served sushi and surprisingly, I never got a chance to try it even though I love sushi. Man, I’m kicking myself so bad now!

There were many memorable moments at “Dfly”, as they would call it. I was the first person in DC to bring an artist off the fresh dirtybird label, in San Francisco. Worthy from dirtybird was nice enough to come and play at my party, which happened to fall close to my wife’s bday. The party was insane, and I continued teaming up with other local deejays for future parties.

I used to enjoy electro house music, but was into the more dirtier side of electro that diverted from cheesy vocals and synthy buildups. After a good year, my view on music had changed yet again. I started focusing my attention to the more natural groove of tech house. I continued to play a good mixture of electro and tech house.

Every weekly party gave me a chance to play different styles of music throughout the night. After eight months of good times, I had received word that Dragonfly was going to close for renovations. The name of the newly renovated venue was to be called “Current.” Luckily, I was given the opportunity to throw one last closing party which I called, “Filthy Fridays.”

For the final party, I decided to invite every guest dj that had played at my party. I believe I had about 12 deejays who came through Dragonfly to hang out, play 2-3 tracks and enjoy one of the last parties that made a staple to this city.

The underground house music that we were playing during those days, has grown since then, and that is making me a happy camper. I went off to have a couple more short residencies at two other venues, but nothing came close to that energy I felt, while spinning at Dragonfly.

It may be called “Current” now, but to me, the fly will always live on…

I Can Talk’ by Ireland’s ‘Two Door Cinema Club was one of the highlights of Kitsuné Music’s Kitsuné Maison 8 compilation and yesterday saw the 12” release of the track.

For the Kitsuné release, reMixes are provided by French Horn Rebellion, Moulinex and these two here, by Golden Bug and Crystal Fighters.

I think Golden Bug’s is my favourite, I love the heavy analogy bass throughout and vocoded backing vocals. It’s a old school vocal Electro track guaranteed to make you move. Crystal Fighters’ mix, despite frantic percussion, is more chilled and intricate with a hint of dancefloor bass.

Boxon Records latest signing, German duo Dyebox (last seen reMixing Zoot Woman) have recently dropped their début EP.

Magik Johnson Makes His Mark with Debut Release for Potty Mouth Music
“Stand Up EP” features three original tracks with remix by Calvertron

CHICAGO—Taking a nod from tech-house heavyweights including Crookers, Jesse Rose and SIS, producer Magik Johnson unveils his latest trick for Potty Mouth Music with “Stand Up EP” (PMM029). In showcasing a range of deep, tribal and peak hour grooves, Johnson’s debut label EP reflects the diversity of his multi-decade music career. The result is three-track collection of original beats, capped with a jazz-inspired remix from UK electro-house producer Calvertron.

“I really wanted to make three tracks that were dance floor friendly and represented what I am in the playing in the clubs,” says Johnson, whose earliest deck days date back to the late ’80s, when rocked his own room at Manchester’s legendary Hacienda.

Since then, Johnson has gone on to establish himself as one of the most venerable artists in the business, blurring the lines of house and techno while remaining true to the nuanced complexities of each genre. Production stints with Cream’s Olympic label, New Order’s Pleasure Recordings and Manchester’s Paper Recordings collective all led to his launch of Shaboom Records, which developed into one of the world’s most respected dance labels.

Since relocating from the UK to Auckland, New Zealand nearly 10 years ago, Johnson has channeled the his darker influences from the Manchester music scene into his original production work, debuting his first album, Cardboard Journey, in 2005. The launch of his digital label, Magiktrax, coupled by his inclusion on Darren Emerson’s Underwater roster, led to releases on acclaimed labels including Made to Play, Saved and Curfew.

Now Johnson adds Potty Mouth Music to the mix with the release of “Stand Up EP.” The record’s uptempo, title track resonates with a synth-driven neurosis set to audibly prick peak-hour crowds. Pair that with the deep, rolling groove of “Make You See,” a late night, tribal-tinged cut framed by vocal chants and dotty bassline. Johnson drifts between the two vibes with “Boy Blew,” a steady track that gets a jazz rework from Calvertron. In melding his signature wonky basslines with horn samples and classic keys, electro-house and organic jazz find an unexpectedly smooth match.
