Delorean is like a breath of fresh air. If you’re looking for something to dance to, clean to, sing to, you should probably check out their EP Ayrton Senna (all tracks listed below). There is little information out there about Delorean(not to be confused with the hard-rock band), but the group is a fantastic pop foursome hailing from Spain.  This is a sunny representation of music, with rock roots and heavy piano layers, creating an extremely uplifting sound. I am a firm believer that music is a direct influence on your mood, and can, in extreme cases, change your life. That being said, I’m not about to say that this EP will change your life, but it will change your state of mind. It will make you stand up and smile, and if it doesn’t make you move just a little bit.. well, I think something is wrong with you.

Durante el año hemos tenido gratas sorpresas como lo son: The XX, Passion Pit, Atlas Sound, aunque estos ya tienen un rato tocando, pero bueno ya me había tardado en hablar de Neon Indian, la verdad es que es una grata sorpresa, creo que es mi banda nueva favorita de este año, digo mínimo de las mencionadas y es que tengo un problema no he tenido mucho tiempo para poder escuchar discos pero este desde que lo escuche me encanto.

Bueno lo primero y poco que se sabía de Neon Indian es que eran dos personas las involucradas en el proyecto, eran anónimos y aparte de esto uno era de Austin, Texas y el otro de Brooklyn, New York. Iniciaron lanzando dos canciones en la red,  ”Should’ve Taken Acid with You” and “6699 (I Don’t Know if You Know)” subiéndolas a blogs y con esta mecánica se fueron abriendo oportunidad así como ganar popularidad, para el verano de este año lanzaron “Deadbeat Summer” y “Terminally Chill”con la misma mecánica de las canciones anteriores, después de esto por fin dieron a conocer el nombre de las personas que estaban detrás de Neon Indian, Alan Palomo, formador de la banda Ghosthustler y del proyecto electrónico VEGA. Alicia Scardetta que es la encargada de los visuales de la banda, ellos se conocieron y trabajaron juntos en la revista de literatura de su universidad, Palomo escribió “Should’ve Taken Acid with You” que habla sobre su amistad.

Para el 13 de octubre lanzaron su LP Psychic Chasms, y “Deadbeat Summer” se convirtió en su sencillo, que por cierto esta canción trae un sample de Todd Rundgren con su canción “Izzat Love”.

Neon Indian se podría definir como un sonido electrónico vintage, esta muy bien acoplado, por momentos nos trasportamos a la década de los 80, es un electrónico con mezcla de pop, sonidos a base de 8 bits, con sintetizadores que crean ondas hipnóticas y te llevan por lugares ya olvidados o nunca conocidos, por momentos parece electro-funk, melodías un poco melancólicas, la verdad no quiero etiquetar a esta banda, prefiero que ustedes juzguen su sonido y vean que les parece esta banda que sin duda será de las bandas a seguir por su ingenio y creatividad que van desde su sonido hasta la manera de darse a conocer.

I love a band that knows how to put on a live performance, and that seems to be exactly what Delphic does (not to mention make killer music). Delphic sounds almost like Snow Patrol, with an electro beat, and much much better music. I’m not sure I can do just to the Delphic by my words, so you’re just going to have to listen. The trio’s debut album is scheduled to be out in January, and is proving to be nothing short of amazing.

Le groupe électro-pop japonais Omadaka aime vraiment le 8-bit!

The Plum Song avec la voix du chanteur folk Akiko Omodaka. Tappei Maki a fait la direction artistique de ce clip hommage à l’époque d’Edo (de 1603 à 1868, parfois appelée période Tokugawa) et principalement à Yoshiwara, le quartier red light de la ville Edo, rebaptisée Tokyo en 1868.

Omodaka avait aussi fait un remix de Kokoriko Bushi, considérée comme la plus ancienne chanson japonaise. Kokoriko est un instrument à cordes.

U.S.E. has been around since about 2004, an electro group formed after posing to be a group in a Seatle night club and loving the enthusiasm the crowd had, they formed the band United States of Electronica. The group has a few EPs out and 2 albums, one having been released this August. I’ve heard about U.S.E. a few times but their track “River of Love” really caught my attention. This song has the ability to completely change my day around. There is a complete charm to it despite its a quite obvious tacky/cheesy nature. River of Love seems to almost have an anthem quality to it, a song that could define a moment in your life. Reminds me of a less house version of Daft Punk with a sprinkle of bubblegum pop and 1970’s rock. Part of me wishes I had discovered it back in June, drinks and dancing to this song would be nothing short of amazing. Check out the disco-pop and prepare to dance.

Le corps mince de Francois, algo así como “El delgado cuerpo de Francoise” es un nuevo trío de chicas electro pop que va a hacer las delicias de todas y todos los modernos. Especialmente las de ellas, creemos.

El grupo lo forman las jóvenes hermanas Emma Kemppianen, Mia Kemppianen – teclados y guitarra-  y una amiga de ellas Malin Nyqvist como vocalista. Todas ellas entre los 18 y 21 años.

Le corps mince de Françoise

Llegadas desde Helsinki, están formando una especie de buzz alrededor de su música con tal sólo unos singles a sus espaldas y un album para finales de este año. Y es que 2 de sus primeros singles – “Cool and Bored” y “Bitch of the Bitches” – van camino de convertirse en himnos de las  pistas de baile.

Aunque lo mejor de su synth-pop acaba de llegar con el nuevo single “Something gold”, sólo superado por el gran video-clip que hay detrás de él.

Esta canción me recuerda especialmente al grupo electro MGMT. Los sintetizadores con un sonido increible, los cortes de guitarra escasos pero perfectamente acoplados y por último la similitud con sus videos psicodélicos.

Aunque las diferencias también son claras. Lejos de cantar a susurros como MGMT, la vocalista Emma casi canta a estridente grito pelado, rapeando algunas líricas con acento fino-ingles agarrándose a los bpm de las bases electro como si se fuera a caer de ella, para al final llegar a los suaves coros de las 3 chicas, casi hipnóticos.

Os dejamos los que creemos que son sus mejores canciones y videos. Apenas hay videos de ellas en directo con calidad, lo que es una pena ya que se ve que su directo tiene que ser de todo menos aburrido.

Continuing with the animal theme I seem to have created, here is Republic Tigers. The Kansas City band has been around for a few years now but only recently has it come across my paths.

A seemingly mellow band still seems to get my body moving. Like a lot of music coming out lately (specifically pop, most often or not being influenced directly from the 80s), the Tigers have apparent electronic structures surrounding their music along with a sort of orchestrated essence. Republic Tigers are definitely a rainy-day band, something to listen to while your enjoying a good book, or a nice glass of wine. My favourite of their tracks is “The Nerve”, a far too catchy slowly paced love song.

Maps is the works of UK musician James Chapman and what sounds to me like a mellowed out version of Passion Pit. Chapman creates a laid back electronic sound to his music, allowing listeners to lay back and full embrace the sounds. Maps has an odd way of completely engulfing me in everything that is James Chapman.

Oh yesss…..what a treat folks! Just found a new one from Hot Chip Their new album, One Life Stand, is slated to be released sometime in February next year. I’m sure there will be more leaks leading up to the launch. It is the current viral marketing trend on the web. But for now, the new song is called “Take it in” and it has that Depeche Mode haunt feel ala “Enjoy the Silence” but breaks out into a happy tone on the chorus. Something tells me that I’m gonna like the album.

Hot Chip have a new track out before the release of their new album, One Life Stand, next February. “Take It In” is the tenth and last track. The group has been busy since the release of Coming on Strong in 2004, although I’m surprised that they haven’t as of yet collaborated with a hip-hop group. They seem to work on new tracks without a break: I saw them play “Over and Over” live in early 2005; it wasn’t released as a single until later that year and was eventually included on The Warning in May 2006.

The new song is poppier than Hot Chip’s singles, with a well-defined, stellar chorus. The major chord that opens the song immediately submits to a stuttering beat and menacing bass and synth lines. The feeling of uncertainty that pervades the verses pivots suddenly, giving way to a sweet, uplifting chorus featuring a languorous vocal and piano line expertly balanced by the restlessness of the electric guitar. Lyrics are one of the factors that elevate Hot Chip over lesser electro-pop bands of the decade: here, the earnest, slightly-heartbroken words bear the signature of Alexis Taylor. “Surgery took place in the half-life / By then I was no more than a phantom” is accompanied by a horror-movie like harmony in the background. This contrasts to the plaintive words of the chorus, sung dolce - “My heart has flown to you just like a dove / It can fly / Please take my heart and keep it close to you / Take it in”.

Taylor is quoted in NME as stating that the new album is more mid-tempo, more disco-influenced. Regardless of its influences, here’s to hoping all ten tracks sustain this level of quality.

Recently, I’ve also spent some time with Saint Etienne’s Smash the System (2001), a collection of the group’s singles from the 90’s. Saint Etienne is comprised of lead singer Sarah Cracknell and two former music journalists, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. The group’s sound shifts from album to album; some fans claim that it is simply a sonic distillation of London – indeed, many of their songs (the ones that aren’t covers) include references to the city, and their recent retrospective album is titled London Conversations.

“He’s on the Phone” (1995) remains one of their most commercially successful singles. The song has a complicated pedigree: it is a remix of the song “Accident” by Motiv8, which previously appeared on a Saint Etienne/Etienne Daho EP. “Accident” is based on the French hit single “Weekend à Rome” by Daho, a French songwriter who is also the voice behind the spoken lyrics in the middle of “He’s on the Phone”.

The song is about an “academia girl” and her attempt to escape an affair with a married man. The London reference is terse: “Got the cash / Feeling flash / In Leicester Square”; the band needs only eight words to capture the excitement of the forbidden and the thrill of making an impression. The track serves up all the guilty pleasures of a eurodance track without the awful lyrics or over-the-top electronic flourishes. It begins with a lilting, descending piano line and Cracknell’s smooth cooing, which are soon interrupted by a propulsive beat and bass line and pulsing synth chords. These four elements, appearing in many a dance track, combine to form the euphoric chorus, augmented by a stroke of musical genius: Cracknell’s anthemic “Yes / Ooh-ooh.”

Saint Etienne are in the process of releasing remastered versions of their studio albums, beginning with Foxbase Alpha from 1991. They’ve also expressed an interest in writing the theme song for the 2012 London Olympics. I can’t think of a more fitting musical act to represent the city, or of a better opportunity for the band to be introduced to the wider audience it deserves.

Yeah Lil Jon is back and featuring in LMFAO’s new song and video Shots its from their album Party Rock, to me there songs are very catchy and funny, I would love to interview these two characters we will get along so quickly seriosuly these dudes bringing that fun into music.

El disco de debut de la neozelandesa Pip Brown, alias Ladyhawke, empieza con una sensacional canción titulada “Magic“; una muestra inequívoca de lo que nos vamos a encontrar en el resto del álbum: un sonido y un estilo altamente impersonales pero una ristra de canciones como la copa de un pino.

“Back of the van“, Paris is burning“, “Dusk till dawn“, “My Delirium“, la citada “Magic” o “Better than sunday” son singles potenciales por los que muchos venderían su alma al diablo, de esas melodías que se ponen a hacer scrobblings infinitos en tu cabeza prácticamente desde el primer momento.

El origen de sus influencias está en los años 80. Las comparaciones con Pat Benatar, Cyndi Lauper o Stevie Nicks son comunes, y ni ella misma niega su amor por todo lo que rodeó a esa década, a principios de la cual nació. Para contrarrestar un poco, se ha hecho remezclar por artistas más de nuestros días, como Peaches, Alex Gopher, Cut Copy o Van She (su compañía de discos es Modular Records, la misma que la de los dos últimos).

Que sí, que Ladyhawke es de ese tipo de artistas acerca de los cuales en un momento dado te llegas a plantear si realmente acaban de gustarte del todo, pero su música acaba acompañándote, de un modo u otro, las veinticuatro horas del día, y así es muy difícil no claudicar.

En el 2003, Label Bleu, un pequeño sello francés dedicado al jazz, presentó a través de su filial electrónica, Bleu Electric, el álbum debut de General Elektriks “Cliquety Kliqk“. El disco tenía muchas posibilidades de pasar completa e injustamente desapercibido, pues tenía nulas opciones comerciales y, además, al llegar a las tiendas de la mano de una pequeña discográfica, no tendría acceso a una amplia red de distribución. Sin embargo, su interés artístico acabó imponiéndose: el influyente sello Compost Records lo reeditó sólo un año después, lo que le garantizaba repercusión internacional.

Seis años después editan su segundo lp, “Good City For Dreamers“. Quizá convenga anunciar ya mismo que es tan personal y sorprendente como el primero, pero mucho más accesible gracias a su nada tímido acercamiento al pop. El funk, el jazz y el soul siguen siendo tres de sus principales influencias, además de su gusto por los beats del hip hop.

El tema inicial del álbum “Take back the instant“, da falsas pistas, pues comienza con una introducción a lo Barry White. A continuación suena uno de los mejores temas del disco “Raid the radio“, un himno a favor de la buena música y de la diversidad, que anima a la búsqueda de nuevos horizontes sonoros por parte del oyente (criticando, de paso, las poco arriesgadas radio-fórmulas). “You don’t listen“, podría colarse en un disco de Air y ”Helicopter”, otro de los grandes aciertos del disco, convierte una inocente pieza para niños en un pegadizo garage psicodélico con palmas incluidas. “Cottorns of inertia” retoma el pop, pero en su vertiente más relajada. La energía vuelve en la pieza bailable del álbum, “David Lynch moments“, con una base a lo Sweet Dreams de Eurythmics.

Grandes temas para una obra singular, muy singular. Y muy recomendable.

Sure seems to be a trend for animals to be incorporated into band names (Frightened Rabbit, White Rabbits, Wolf Gang, Grizzle Bear, The Elephants, the list goes on..). Not that i’m complaining, these bands tend to appeal to me, I like furry things.. Anyway, here we have Chris Glover, better known as Penguin Prison has cheered me up the past few days with his infectious pop beats. New York’s Glover has great vocals to back the full sounding tracks he’s been providing. The music makes me feel like I’m 10 years old again, and it’s a good feeling. I love a one man band..

It has been reported that Producer Mark Ronson is currently working with newcomer Ellie Goulding on her currently untitled debut album, set to be released in 2010. During an interview with Whats On Wales Ellie states that this is not true, but she will be working with him on HIS upcoming album. She does state however that she’s been working with FrankMusik (one of my favourites) and producer Starsmith. Sounds to me like there is a good album in the making.

Here is Goulding’s single Under the Sheets, “It’s about a relationship that’s not based on anything real – the sometimes fickle nature of intimacy. The guy is literally fighting for affection but just ends up in more pain.”
