Charlotte Martin loves to give. Rarities-6 is the final part of a 6 piece almost single like set of unreleased materials. Having only been able to buy the first 5 on tours, the last one was made available to buy online. HPM will now be officially campaigning to get the other 5 released online – these are fantastic!

“Shrink” reminds me of a cross between very early electric CharMar and Stromata’s era, almost like a crossing bridge over between the two. It’s catchy, full of neat embellishments and a little bit of funkiness to it too.

“Dangled” is a piano/vocal track and features some beautiful trademark layered vocals and ever rising and soaring choruses. There is real attention to little pace changes in this track and its what makes it much more punchy and emotional than your usual singer/songwriter stuff. Add to that Charlotte’s blood-on-your-sleeves vocals and you have a tremendous combo.

Finally “No Words”  reminds me of the work from “Orphans” and has a great sparseness and emptiness to it and all the keyboards have a harsh coldness to them. Combined with Martin doing a lazy slur over the verses and then giving it welly in the choruses it makes for a great end to the trio.

Obviously big Charlotte Martin fans should be the target audience for these mini-cd’s and everyone should lap these tracks up but each song is so strong, you could easily use this as a starting point for getting into her music too.

Now please can we have the rest released? Please?

I needed a study break from writing my grad school application because I’m having some serious writer’s block.  So I decided to go with something upbeat but still convey my mood. This is how I arrived at “Frustration” by The Whip. This dance rock song from their  “X Marks Destination” album says it all… including what the weather is like here. Ha.

On stage, their glorious hard-wired gene pool of anthemic indie and stadium techno comes into its own, driving along like a perfectly pitched DJ set, and where other bands might pause to sip their riders between songs Delphic slip into hypnotic driving techno interludes, turning “gigs” on their heads and opening fans all-seeing rave-eyes to the benefits of the breakdown.

I love a band that knows how to put on a live performance, and that seems to be exactly what Delphic does (not to mention make killer music). Delphic sounds almost like Snow Patrol, with an electro beat, and much much better music. I’m not sure I can do just to the Delphic by my words, so you’re just going to have to listen. The trio’s debut album is scheduled to be out in January, and is proving to be nothing short of amazing.

Most of my favourite songs I have come to like within the first 10 second of the song playing. That being said, Jonathan Boulet’s track “A Community Service Announcement” caught my attention immediately.This song really makes me appreciate the drum beat, it almost makes me want to start drumming… which is strange. Jonathan has a great back backing his talent, providing great support for his music. And for some reason the baseline halfway through the song reminds me of the Fraggle Rock theme song, which of course is a fantastic thing.

Boulet hails from Australia, with his debut album out December 4th. After hearing the tracks posted on his myspace, I can without a doubt say that I am more than looking forward to this album. I sense great things.

The Big Pink’s debut album A Brief History of Love was released in September 2009. Their single “Dominoes” is a catchy electro-rock-pop song that is poised to be big, or at least serve as background music on advertisements for electronic goods. The chorus may be too repetitive, but try and not get it stuck in your head.

Tonight I will be partaking in my favorite past time, a live show. Not only is the show at my favorite local venue, The Casbah, but up and coming band The Big Pink are headlining. My favorite track from this London duo ’s 2009 debut album “A Brief History of Love” is by far the catchy electro-rock track “Dominos.” Should be a good PBR fueled night of music discovery & debauchery.

London electro-rock duo The Big Pink describe their debut album, self produced at Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland Studios, as encompassing “every different aspect of love… The good, the bad, the boring, the exciting, the dreams, the nightmares, the whole thing.” That’s a pretty bold statement and a pretty ambitious MO for a debut album but when you add layers of big sound, knife sharp production and an elegant and cinematic video it all spells WIN. Silent Hill 4 -The Room- once again see’s Akira Yamaoka throw himself and the kitchen sink at a bizarre mix of ambience, noise, haunting melodies and rocked out beats. This time round the ambience and noise have been put on a back burner however as we gear up for the most melodic assault yet.

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn returns with her achingly emotive vocals. They are first showcased with “Tender Sugar”, a slow but climactic almost darkwave piece with haunting guitars and a very low-res production – a trait that stays with us for the rest of soundtrack. At first I found the low-res approach a turn off and in some respects it still is – but if you listen to the whole thing all the way through, you don’t notice it after a short while. “Tender Sugar” is a stunning opener setting a new darker tone for the vocal pieces and sets up the listener perfectly for what’s to come.

“Waverer” is one of the more abstract tunes. A minimal drum, bass and warped echoing piano/guitar feedback hybrid swirl throughout the piece enticing you in further. “Fortunate Sleep -noone disturb her dead-” then slides in after a small noise interlude with a song that reminds me of “Forest” from Silent Hill 2 for some reason. It’s not very similar sounding but its in the same tone for me.

“Melancholy Requiem” begins the first real instrumental “song” with arpeggios of piano and some distorted keyboards and string implements. The whole piece has a dirty, edgy and uncomfortable feel to it – it encapsules the essence of Silent Hill completely especially as the song degenerates into discorded ambience – a trait again carried in many songs.

“Confinement” has a mean guitar and percussive edge to it and brings you back to the old guitar sounds of the original Silent Hill songs before “Drops of Shame” takes you on an eerie trip-hop ambient climb around the echoing room. “The Suicidal Clock Chime” is a short piece of humming noises and discorded clangs of a very broken organ by the sounds of things before “Silent Circus” returns to the trip-hop beats for a quirky tune that is actually quite funky and chilled out.

“Traversing the Portals of Reality” then returns to the more grungy guitar riffs of earlier tracks with a very b-movie stabbing organ sound that lends itself very well to rock music, as does the out of tune violins! Great work! “Into The Depths of Self Discovery” then gives us an unnerving “new age” track of keyboard delights that pulsates with echoing soft screams flying through the piece. It’s probably the closest the soundtrack comes to a properly laid out melody too in an instrumental song.

“Cradel of Forest” sees the return of Joe Romersa on vocals for an excellent song. His vocals came under a bit of criticism in Silent Hill 3’s Soundtrack however here they fit the song perfectly and actually made me appreciate “Hometown” much more. Mary gives us some backing vocals too in this catchy rock song.

“Resting Comfortably” is the only sub minute song but I adore it. Its just a circle of synthesized vocals (it sounds like it anyway) but my goodness I could listen to it for ages on end. Eerie and subtle it leads straight into “Nightmarish Waltz” with distorted vocals and drum loops before the essence of “Resting Comfortably” returns for “Pulsating Ambience” where the songs non-vocal parts are accompanied by disorientating percussive booming bassy boings, almost like an Indian Udu Pot but Silent Hill style!

Onto vocal track three “Your Rain” with Mary on full song with heartbreaking weariness before the anthemic chorus pounds through your heart. This one took a few listens before I really appreciated it but now its a firm favourite.

“The Last Mariachi” is a completely carefully mucked up song and shows genius is how to make something likeable out of non-tune before my favourite instrumental song appears. “Wounded Warsong” is all about building tension as the chords pull up further and further with grinding padded synths crawling you up with it. It gets me going every listen – pure class.

“Underground Dawn -Never Come-” is similar to the second track, trip-hop drum beats and random guitar ambience flows throughout before “Fever Chill” takes away the guitars for some banging around on vibraphones and keyboards. “Remodeling” is the last of the official instrumentals which takes you off on a fun paced tour de force of random sampling and noises which is what the series does best.

To finish the real soundtrack off we have two stunning vocal tracks. The first “Room Of Angel” is easily the most downbeat original vocal track for a game I’ve came across to date and for that it deserves a mention. The bond between piano, vocal and ambient background is electric and you can feel yourself losing your strength. Some may think its too miserable – I think its superb! Finally “Waiting For You ~Live at heaven’s Night~” is a bonus track that’s not live at all. Its unreleased and they have simply and somewhat pointlessly popped a cheering crowd in it – thankfully it doesn’t sound fake. The song is catchy and have great hooks – a good rock out grunge style with Mary giving it some welly!

The second disc features a spoken story in Japanese called “Inescapable Rain in Yoshiwara”. The reader speaks gruffy and performs voices for all the monsters leading to some quite bizarre and unnerving screeching and moaning! Of course it would be no fun it wasn’t set to all the noise that characterises the Silent Hill series.

Each chapter is given a note of the music scale and each one works in harmony with the next. The atmosphere is tense and I’m sure if it were in English, you could appreciate the disc a whole lot more. However even in Japanese you can immerse yourself as the reader gets well into the story and the ambience unnerves you.

So does it match the previous three soundtracks? In a word – Yes! This soundtrack took an awful long time for me to really appreciate. I instantly fell in love with 2 & 3, and the original soundtrack I believe deserves status purely on its bold statement of noise. It didn’t feel like collectively it held together as the balance of melody overcame the ambience and therefore lacklustureness random noises couldn’t hold their own.

Now however on a relisten while writing this review, I can safely say it deserves its place up with the first three soundtracks. A fine collection, a fine series – Well done Akira Yamaoka!

“Chéri(e)” es el último single de Oai Star, extraído de su nuevo álbum “Manifiesta”, publicado el pasado 21 de septiembre. El combo de denuncia irónicamente en su vídeo de promo el reparto de las tareas domésticas en la pareja.

El sonido recuerda a Zebda y es que nuestros vecinos siempre han sentido debilidad por el rock steady, aunque Oai Star se ubica en el eletro rock.

El grupo está formado por Lux Botté y Gari Greu, que anteriormente estuvieron en el conocido Massilia Sound System. A estos se les unió Blu, Dj Kayalik a los chips, Sylvio en el bajo y Fil a la batería.

En 2008 lanzaron su primer disco homónimo y posteriormente “Va à Lourdes”, con temas en los que ya apuntaban maneras para las letras irónicas como en “And I Smoke”.

En “Manifiesta” han contado con la colaboración de Claude Sicre de Fabulous Trobadors, Papet-J y Moussu T de MSS.

Los marselleses ya cuentan con bastantes seguidores en Francia y con una tarjeta de bolos por su país bastante completa.

Before I start, I’ll admit to being a big Muse fan.

Released on 15 September 2009, The Resistance has mostly received good reviews. It reached the top of the album charts in 19 countries and hit 3rd spot on the US Billboard 200. During the first week after release it achieved sales of 148 000 copies in the UK alone; outselling the band’s previous effort – Black Holes and Revelations.

In my opinion, the three-part “Exogenesis” is the most impressive tune on the album, with “United States of Eurasia” a close second (or should that be fourth?)

As far as I’m concerned, it’s an easy 4.5/5 for this one.

Según los vaticinios, la banda que abriría el concierto de la agrupación británica Depeche Mode en Bogotá tendría amplio reconocimiento en el medio local. Por eso el mismo Peter Salmang, líder Angele Phase -un grupo de electro rock bogotano que apenas este año sacó su primer álbum al mercado-, se sorprendió con la noticia de que ellos habían sido los elegidos para tocar las primeras notas en el concierto que se realizará el 10 de octubre en el Parque Simón Bolívar.

Poco puedo hablar de esta banda alemana, The Cold Rush, ya que toda la información que he encontrado esta en perfecto alemán… y no tengo tanto don de lenguas, aquí dejo el enlace a su web por si alguién tiene más curiosidad. Solo decir que es una banda que hace música Rock / Pop-Rock con un toque electrónico. Canciones mayoritariamente cañeras y algo melancólicas. El disco que dejo se titula Zerotonin, compuesto por trece temas y que comparten bajo esta licencia Creative Commons. After months of searching, I was finally able to get my hands on the debut album of Toronto electro-rock duo Woodhands. After listening to the album once, I felt a trifle let down, perhaps because of how much I loved their songs “Dancer” and “I Wasn’t Made for Fighting.”

That being said, I listened to the album again and found myself liking it a lot more. This can either be explained by me being drowsy from my cold I’m still recovering from or just because it takes some getting used to.

I was trying to make a comparison in order to demonstrate the sound of Woodhands but I found it hard to think up. It’s sort of like Shout Out Out Out Out only with (mostly) human vocals and a bit of a rock influence. The result is what has been called “Dirty electronic music” as they like to say on their MySpace.

The album begins with the song that got me into them, “Dancer”, which features guest vocals by Maylee Todd. It begins with some nifty electronic beeps and a pretty awesome drumline that leads into Todd’s vocals.

The album continues from there, with a lot of electronic noise amidst some vocals which feature a lot of repetition that somehow makes the songs a little more enjoyable.

Some songs feature only minimal vocals and lots of electronica. For listeners who aren’t used to this type of music they might get lost in the music. Even though I have listened to Shout Out Out Out Out’s Reintegration Time twice I still found myself lost on some of Woodhands’ music.

When I listened a second time everything was a lot better from me; I don’t know if that was the same reaction that other people had.

It was hard to come up with what the theme of any of the songs were which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Who can honestly say they love trying to find out the hidden intentions of every song they hear? The only song which made perfect sense to me was the song “Straighten the Curtains” which deals with sexual frustration.

I would definitely recommend this album to electronica fans, they’ll certainly like it although it may take some getting used to. Here’s hoping that their upcoming album Remorsecapades will be just as interesting to listen to.

Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson nasceu na Suécia, filha de pais artistas a cantora de 24 anos sofreu influencia das artes desde cedo. A artista morou em lugares como Estocolmo, Portugal, Marrocos e Nova York, quando era pequena. Aos 21 anos ela retornou à Suécia onde gravou o disco de estréia, Youth Novels (2008), que contou com produção de Bjorn Yttling e Lasse Martén.

Em seu álbum ela utiliza diversos instrumentos, mas o piano é o seu preferido, além da voz, é nele que a bela compõe. Lykke tem muitas influências, entre as musicais, Bob Dylan, mas a musa com jeito de modelo acha importante mesmo se expressar através de tudo o que faz e seguir seus instintos.

A sensação sueca do indie rock abriu sua própria gravadora, já se apresentou no famoso Coachella Festival, participou do álbum de estréia dos N.A.S.A. ao lado de Kanye West e Santigold,  e recebeu uma nomeação ao Grammy Sueco.

Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson was born in Sweden, daughter of artists parents, the 24 years singer was influenced by the arts early on. The artist lived in places like Stockholm, Portugal, Morocco and New York when she was little. At 21, she returned to Sweden where she recorded her debut album, Youth Novels (2008), which was produced by Bjorn Yttling and Lasse Marten.

On her album she uses various instruments, but the piano is his favorite, in addition to voice, is it that the beautiful composed. Lykke has many influences, including the musician Bob Dylan, but the muse that looks like a model thinks it’s important to express yourself through everything you do and follow your instincts.

The Swedish indie rock  girl opened her own label, has performed at the famous Coachella Festival, participated in the debut album of NASA alongside Kanye West and Santigold, and received a Swedish Grammy nomination.

This Week we will learn I little bit more about her style and preferences!

J’ai eu la chance d’entendre des extraits musicaux de Résistance de DJ Champion. Et bon, bien que ce disque me semble réussi dans le genre plus rock qu’électro rock, je ne peux pas dire que ça me plait autant comme le bon vieux DJ Champion d’autre fois. Que voulez-vous je suis encore de l’école techno : les crescendos et la tension qui monte propre à la musique techno me manquent comme dans le bon vieux temps des Raves!

Je comprends les choix artistiques que Maxime Morin a dû faire pour sortir de ses « vieilles pantoufles confortables » depuis 4 ans. Le succès, ça peut aussi être très limitant, j’en sais personnellement quelque chose. C’est nécessaire de faire un cheminement qui nous amène ailleurs après autant de confort. Mais je pense que leur nouveau style musical n’est pas tout à fait au point.

La voix du nouveau chanteur sonne à mon avis un peu vieillot. On dirait que ce disque manque de modernité en général, bien qu’il coule bien à entendre d’un bout à l’autre.

Aussi je trouve que la féminité propre à l’ancienne chanteuse, Betty Bonifassi manque dans cet album. Je dis bien sa sorte de féminité car elle a tant qu’à moi une des voix les plus belles et originales sur cette planète. Elle est tout de même, la seule québécoise à avoir chanter aux Oscars avec Céline Dion. Elles ont par ailleurs des voix complètement opposées… on aime beaucoup, ou on n’aime pas du tout).

Je comprends à la lecture de l’article du Voir, que Betty aie bien voulu trouvé sa propre identité artistique au sein de son groupe avec Beast. Mais Betty, ma chérie, je m’ennuis (rires) !
