Tits. Can you handle it? (The word, not the tits themselves.)

I’m sure some will blush and others will shrug. What drew me into this song wasn’t the tits though, it was that sweet bass line. You can especially hear it at the beginning of the song. Oh yeah baby! That’s what I am talking about!

By the way, if the watch the fan made video note that it isn’t really Rated G, and probably not even PG-13. I’m sure you can handle it though. (The video, not the tits themselves.) Eyes up here! Oh wait… right. I’m a boy.

10 Jahre Telektroponk!

AMANDA BLANK
I LOVE YOU
DOWNTOWN

Springing from the deep well of club trickery that is Diplo’s Philadelphian Hollertronix collective, the ribald Amanda Blank knows more words for a foo-foo than Dr Kinsey and packs something large and twitching beneath her hot-pants. Fitting out both ironic hipster-hop and sincere attempts at mainstream entry Diplo himself administrates with Spank Rock, XXXChange and one David Sitek all contributing to an embarrassment of styles (dancehall, electroclash, crunk, punk), all shunted into a short running-time.

Essentially a producer’s album, little room is left for our resident nympho to demarcate a signature flavour and the overplayed vagina dentata persona lacks Peaches’ subversive wit, resulting in crassness. Nestled within the eventful production (a little eagar, a little stuffy), Blanks’s retro delivery, interchangeable with Uffie’s skeezy old-school flow, is just hackneyed by now. Originality is glimpsed however in the more unassuming likes of ‘A Love Song’ and an ethereal collaboration with Lykke Li. John Calvert

PEACHES
I FEEL CREAM
BEGGARS XL

Contending with the likes of Uffie’s delinquent skank-hop or The Teenagers’ kitsch Euro-filth, lately even Madonna’s vagina-heavy promos conjure more edgy revulsion than Peaches’ Spartan electroclash and nastified old-skool rapping; haemorrhaging novelty with every release.

Modification is necessary then for this her fifth album, with James Ford’s opulent craftsmanship enlisted to house her newfound feminine sensitivities. ‘Lose You’ is markedly vulnerable, ‘Talk to me’ bemoans her persona for deterring romance and the title track is a dejected disco-soul enigma where she might even let Johnny Safety-Word be on top.

It’s difficult to sympathise, though, when you’re facing a transdermal sex-crime everywhere else on the album. Naturally, Peaches is most entertaining when hunting startled man-candy, like on the lecherous ‘Mommy Complex’ and the Soulwax-produced ‘Showstopper’, in which her techno-punk wrath is righteously dispatched. On the Lil’ Kim-mugging ‘Billionaire’ she’s teamed with Yo Majesty’s Shunda K; alwats equipped with a unique turn of phrase: “I’m a diamond in the muff/ Big Trouble in Little Mangina”.

All of which has the nutritional value of edible panties but is as hook-ridden and instantly gratifying as is customary for Peaches. When interpolated with diva-glamour and guarded emoting, the result is her most well-rounded offering yet.

Peaches @ Concorde 2, Brighton

In a year that looks set to go down in the annuals of time as one that was ruled by the emergence of the electro tinged female solo artist; the often controversial yet equally highly influential Electro sleaze artist Peaches seems to have slipped out of public view. For many the path that she once laid has been trampled over, abused and ripped up replaced with one that is safer, better to look at but ultimately lacks any sort of personality or danger.
Tonight in a sweaty Concorde 2 she offers the audience a firm, hard hitting punch of a set to remind that it would be foolhardy to discard her as a has-been. Her relocation to Berlin has seen her slightly shift direction, the electro-clash tag is one that can be fully discarded as she has seen fit to usher in a less angsty, higher polished almost R&B lite pop smoothness. Yet it has also been a move that has seen her partly discard usage of reliable drum machines instead adopting to employ a backing band, a move which has resulted in the live experience a more fluid less regimented feel. This not be tied to a set time has seen her up the ante of her stage show, tonight she hardly spends anytime on stage, the majority spent either in amongst the crowd, surfing from one side of the room to the other or walking on top of them in a series of outlandish, garish outfits that most would recoil in embarrassment with the prospect of wearing.
Yet for all this embracing of the new, it is undoubtedly the old that excites the audience and garnishes the best response, the overtly crass lyrics, mono-syllable vocals and thumping beats of ‘AAXXX’ and ‘Fuck The Pain Away’ are two songs that will go on to define her artistic career. A modern female version of Iggy Pop breathing for a new generation, stagecraft is one thing the new batch of pretenders could learn from Peaches.

Uns bons italio-disco, anos 80, um pop new wave, sexed-up electroclash. Aqui vos deixo o seu single que lançaram no passado dia 25.

I was first turned-on to Quebecois electronic artist and producer Tiga James Sontag through a !K7 Records DJ-KiCKS album, a club-style series of mix compilations where in its 20th instalment, Tiga restyled and served-up 24 hard and hot tracks profiling electroclash artists new and old including Le Tigre, Soft Cell, and Chromeo. The 2002 album described by JIVEMagazine as the testament of a nouveau-electro “master at work” ended upon one final track, Tiga’s reworking of Felix De Housecat’s “Madame Hollywood”, originally performed by the Duchess of planet electro Miss Kittin, but this time cheekily sung by none other then the prince of sleazy beats himself. [1]

The critical success of Montrealer Tiga’s DJ-KiCKS album and its re-release repackaged this time over with the club-hit remix of faux-gansta Nelly’s “Hot in Herre”, propelled Tiga up DJ charts, also garnering him credit for the creation of “nu-electro”, a blending of electro with steamy disco soul, rescuing electroclash from the techno mausoleum where it had been banished since 80’s synth went out of style.[2] By tailoring electro from something old into something new, and topping it off with his own caramel drizzle of sex appeal and irony, the distinct sound of Tiga was being defined and delivered unto the world.

Now the dance music scene is not known to boast recognizable faces like the ostentatious stage personas of band front men from Marilyn Manson to U2. In the case of electronic dance music, it is usually music before celebrity, the DJ standing behind the art rather than the face spinning on the dial. However, in the case of Tiga attaching a face to the music (and the album cover) meant personalizing the work, making it distinct in a world of hard beats and killer loops amassed together under the generic white label in music stores of DANCE MUSIC.[7] And the strategy worked. From 2001 and onwards Tiga’s reputation and celebrity continued to climb and made him world renowned as an electronic music producer, remixer, and label owner, donning the cakey face of a boy angel and dance floor hopping skills.

The success of Turbo Recordings and Tiga himself is due largely to the enormous blogosphere attention and mp3 blogs devoted to electronica. Because electronic music has not marketably entered the mainstream (not yet, at least), much of the new music is being played in the indie/ dance club scene and rave parties. The musical diversity of Tiga and other artists represented by his label tapped him into a large cross-section of the community that use the blogosphere to exchange information and opinions on their favourite live shows and dance music.[13] In an age where everyone and their dog has a blog, Tiga’s rise is a story of grassroots gone wild, buzz spreading largely through the net.

Tiga himself has capitalized on this internet buzz by creating an online culture for his latest album CIAO!. Utilizing social utility tools like myspace, facebook and tweeter, the DJ has connected himself directly into his online social fan world. He devised a podcast accessible through his website www.tiga.ca , one that cleverly endorses the artists he digs as well as promoting his own music and that of his upcoming Turbo Recording mates like Proxy and Popof. Through a link on his website, listeners can access the Turbo Recording website and purchase music straight from the label. And to top it all off, he has created two hilarious, mock interviews reachable through his website and youtube. These interviews depict Tiga poking fun at his mock personality and the pretension of artist poseurs. The interview CIAO! MEANS FOREVER Part 1 and 2 and its hilarious critique on artist vanity is reported as receiving 3 times as much positive emails then the album itself[14], which begs the question: is the album really good, or is the marketing just a lot more better?

According to ResidentAdvisor, one of the top electronic magazines out there, Tiga’s new album is “impeccable”, a “perfectly-formed and appealing dance pop album”[15] Unlike Tiga’s previous albums, its pop-melody sound is ripe with “crossover” potential[16], and has positioned Tiga to enter the mainstream once and for all. After seventeen years in the biz, working his way from promoter to entrepreneur to remix DJ to original composer, remaining mostly underground despite a couple high-profile instances, it would seem that Tiga’s evolving sound is one that is far more accessible than any of his previously obscure tastes. It is fair to speculate that Tiga’s influence on the music industry, most notably his efforts to revive electroclash, has created the ground for his sound to take off in popular culture. Which begs another question: did Tiga create the ground for his own success simply by sticking with what he loved long enough till the world caught on? I would have to say—absolutely! A secret this good could only have been kept for so long.

I thought it was great. Leila K’s version of the Plastic Bertrand song, Ca Plane Pour Moi. Fantastic octave bass line going top speed. I remember getting the DJ in a club to play it and not even realising he’d played it too fast, until he pointed it out to me afterwards. Here’s the vid. Watch out though, it’s cut pretty fast too and has plenty of strobing in it.

It’s been a long time. Shouldn’t have left you, without a dope beat to step to…I really need to stop quoting old Timbaland songs. Anyway, I intend on writing much more. I’ve been trying to get my life in order so the ‘ole Shwayblog was a bit on hiatus. During this time, though, I’ve been watching a ton of The Mighty Boosh to keep me going. The Boosh are an institution onto themselves that continually churn out and discover the best comedy, live performances, and music. For this post, we shall focus on the music. The Boosh are big fans and advocates of electroclash outfit Robots in Disguise, which, after hearing about them, I became a big fan, as well. Robots in Disguise consists of Dee Plume and Sue Denim. Their music is fast-paced, poppy, and capable of making you dance whether or not you want to. It’s fascinating. And their videos are on a whole ‘nother level. They are absolutely hilarious, appropriately almost always contain robots, and sometimes involve members of The Boosh, themselves. Below, I’ve listed my two favorite videos and below that, one of my favorite songs by them without a video. Extra credit for those of you who can spot the Fielding brothers in one of the two videos!

Yes, I do really still visit CD shops to buy music. It’s nice to have a bit of company by going outside sometimes. Not really pop – more distorted heavy sequenced bass lines, sort of like Daft Punk, but not as repetitive. Very catchy though. Watch out for the odd bit of swearing – dirty monkeys! ‘Click Click‘, ‘1000 cigarettes‘, ‘Fist of God‘ are great.
Fantasy Black Channel

Released: Aug 11 2008

Label: Parlophone

Genre: Dance-punk/Electroclash

Rating: 4.2/5

If you’re a music fan looking for a taste of something different, unique and thrilling, Late of the Pier’s ‘Fantasy Black Channel’ is a fantastic purchase, packed with twelve original and exciting tracks. The four-piece band from Castle Donnington have taken music to a new level, bringing us an album full of fast paced energetic rave sounds and futuristic synths behind Samuel Eastgate’s versatile vocals throughout. The studio album its self is wonderfully crafted, the opening track ‘Hot Tent Blues’ merging into a fast paced, choppy ‘Broken’, as well as ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen’ coming to an anticlimax before becoming the opening of ‘Bathroom Gurgle’.

The lyrics throughout the album at times seem almost schizophrenic, the lyric structure in many songs incomprehensible due to the broken syntax and high pitched screaming of Eastgate’s vocals. ‘Bathroom Gurgle’, the closing song of the album is stated as ‘unknown’ when viewing the song lyrics on the Late of the Pier official site, which summarises much of the lyrics throughout the album. The lyrics of which are comprehendible seem intoxicated and revolving escapism and light hearted ‘easy-life’ “lately i’ve been thinking this whole world seems too hard and i’d be better off to undo everything” from ‘Random Firl’ as well as the repetition of “easy life, is it an easy life” throughout ‘The Enemy are the Future’. In tracks such as ‘V W’ lyrics are completely put aside so the audience can marvel over the experimental synth sounds throughout the song.

Late of the Pier have created a highly unique exciting new sound, maybe not appealing to everyone – but nevertheless have found a gap in the market giving them high chances of progression. If you enjoy the categorised ‘new rave’ music, Klaxons or similar sounds then this album is certainly for you. ‘Fantasy Black Channel’ contains great sounds, a great vocalist and one ‘must buy’ album.
