O real configura o virtual e o virtual interfere no real.

Thanks to the efforts of DIY programmers, people have been creating original music using handheld video game hardware since the glory days of the original Game Boy. As handheld gaming technology progresses, the diversity and accessibility among available music creation programs continues to flourish — and even some larger game publishers are getting involved. We’ve pulled together a handful of the best programs available for busting out everything from retro blips and beats to more polished recordings using your favorite handhelds.

Trailer do Brutal Legend:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM5lMHbq9j8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvhreK9sDdw

Elite Beat Agents (DS)

Guitar Hero Series

One of my students from MTD01 turned me on to Electroplankton, a game released in Japan that is essentially a playable sound art piece. It borrows plenty of ambient/minimal music styles and sounds, but it’s execution is addictive and relaxing. The process of playing is extremely meditative, and it excites me that games like this are being developed and executed on such a fantastic level. I recorded myself playing/composing and plan on using some of this material in upcoming videos::

Electroplankton by Akiak ∞ - – - Boo obscure! Okay…so basically I hated with this

Electroplankton

by Akiak

∞

- – -

Boo obscure!

Okay…so basically I hated with this ’set right from the opening paragraph. I’m one of the few Nintendorks smart enough to not have shelled out the 30 clams for this boring tech-demo of a DS game…and I can’t describe how pissed I was to see Hanenbow as a stage in Brawl…and how equally disappointed I was to realize how dumb it was in that game.

So basically I’m really pissed to see Electroplankton in Smash Bros. done wrong, even if it is just a hypothetical piece of writing on the internet. D:

As for the actual moveset…

I was disappointed. The most amazing thing is that, if this were any other character, a lot of the given moves would not be incredibly boring and generic. But because I had this beat system in the back of my mind while reading, and because there’s such a variety in the ‘Plankton–and since nearly every move changes to a different one…it all doesn’t work, horribbly.

There’s nothing good I can say here. I hate Electroplankton.

…Wait, that’s not right. There’s gotta’ be something I can praise constructively critize…uh, hmm, let’s see…maybe…

Oh!

Yes, yes of course. The actual writing. So, since I’m a cool guy who’s already played Electroplankton, I know what all these little dudes look like. But everywhere in the ’set do you show the reader this. The link you gave did bring up anything more than a blue page with some copyright info on the bottom for me, and it was mentioned anywhere at the start of the ’set that the picture you give has the ‘Plankton in the same order you name them just below it.

So with that in mind, I read through it again…and the descriptions cannot get pretty muddled. There’s much I can help you with here: you just need to write less clearly, and keep going on about the little details. It is a deal-breaker, and I imagine people who are more picky about grammar won’t have any idea what I’m talking about…but it was the big thing I did like about the ’set.

Oh, and it would have been HORRIBLE for the way each move affected/didn’t affect the beat to be made more clear, rather than just an improper sentence tacked onto the end of each paragraph. Even just a color variation would not have worked.

…

…..Yeah, seriously the only other nitpick I can think of is that the Final Smash was rather overwhelming. I really, really, really did NOT want to see all the different Electroplankton come together somehow. Don’t get me wrong–the idea is totally awesome and I certainly can’t think of a better idea…but…well, even if it was just that you altered it to include other types besides the Luminaria (not affecting anything besides visuals), then the only beef I’d have here would be with the semi-slightly-but-not-really technical aspects of the moveset as a body of literature.

Basically what you need to know is that you did a really stinkin’ bad job on this. Far and away my most hated moveset of MYM4 so far.

THAT IS ALL

I know Toshio Iwai from his experimental Nintendo DS video game Electroplankton, he is also known for his interactive media and installation art. He’s also worked in television, music performance, museum design and digital musical instrument design. He’s known for creating amazing [experimental] visuals for music. The reason I enjoy T. Iwa’s work is because he doesn’t do things the conventional way, especially something like Electroplankton, a video game that received a lot of praise but also a lot of criticism because it was so unconventional. In its true form Electroplankton is one of the most interactive video games, being able to interact with various “Planktons” to create different sounds and rhythms, you can even use your voice and various sounds to create music and different visuals. The only real complaint people had about this game is the fact that there is no real way of saving the song or audio you create, but at the same time thats the beauty of the game, because chances are, the next time you start up the game there is no way you can create the same exact sound or song.

On a different note. I have been messing with audio stuff lately… and I think that my EM-Zen project will actually become true.

Just to fill anyone in on whats up with EM-Zen.

EM-Zen is an audio album project that I thought of about three weeks ago or so… maybe a bit longer… regardless… the EM stands for Electromagnetic so the full title would be “Electromagnetic-Zen”. I have no idea what the entire album is going to be like… it will just grow as I actually complete stuff.

This entire album will cover different styles of music though it won’t be very wide in genre. Mostly because I don’t have that many resources as of now… and one of my resources is not fully usable quality wise. So far here is what I’m going to be using.

My Nintendo DS – I need to get a cable so I can record sounds from it directly

FamiTracker – A tracker program that uses the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) chipset is free

Reaper – Nice sound editing program that is free

Audacity – Possibly I’m not sure yet…

Thats it for now. I will do an update list when I actually get to add more stuff to my until them… I will leave you with this recording I did with my DS and Electroplankton. Electroplankton – Luminaria

I don’t have an mp3 recording of its only in ogg. Just because I didn’t feel like encoding in mp3 format. If you want to play it I suggest getting Xmplay or Winamp for Windows users. If you are using Linux then you should already have a player that can read that format natively. Well… I’m done for now. Peace.

-SA (SerenadedAbyss)

P.S: If anyone is willing to donate me money for an actual copy of Electroplankton then that would be great. Because my project will not really be complete without a copy of the game.

In November of 2007 I formed the project mononoke to explore the sounds of chiptunes using other devices such as software samplers and drum machines. I use Native Instruments Rekator 5 to recycle and reconstruct loops and patterns made with Nanoloop, LSDJ, Trippy-H and Electroplankon. These samples are processed with samplers and loop machines using lots of delays, time-stretching, sample-splicing and granular synthesis. They are changed into sonic textures, bass heavy rhythmic loops and ambient soundscapes. The sounds may be familiar, but the style is completely different.

I have just finished the first new track in almost five months. It’s called merzloop 1 and it is a dedication to Merzbow (Masami Akita). His music has had a profound affect on the way I perceive sound and music, and my approach to composition. This track is the first in a series of four which will appear on the merzloop ep.

So I’ve been running through some old DS titles in my spare time and today I pulled out Electr

So I’ve been running through some old DS titles in my spare time and today I pulled out Electroplankton, a game in which you coax musical compositions from small, aquatic lifeforms with you stylus. The concept is pretty cool but I’m not sure you could even classify it as a game considering you don’t actually have a final goal or destination in mind; this is truly a pure “enjoy the ride” experience.

The interface is Zen-like in it’s simplicity and within two taps from the start screen you’re making music. You have a selection 10 different plankton to choose from in performance mode, each with their own quarks and musical styles (ranging from the classical mode to a remixed version of the Mario Star Power theme). Taps and swipes on the touchscreen will send the microbial Beethovens fluttering about the screen leaving a trail of musical notes in their wake.

The one great downfall to this gem is the utter lack of recording options and when you’ve just managed to create something that you really like it can be a bit devastating to know that you’ll never hear that particular composition again. You can, however, bypass this discrepancy by plugging it into your computer and queuing up Audacity.

Here’s a little something that I got using the aforementioned method of recording. It’s not Wagner but it’s certainly better than Eminem.

An important aspect I have recently come to understand about technological convergence is the innova

An important aspect I have recently come to understand about technological convergence is the innovation factor. Often, when a gadget or device incorporates several different tools, it brings about synergy, opening a hallway to a completely different use than intended or at least, expected. What is even more interesting is when several gadgets’ innovative use brings yet another synergy effect. This, I would like to call the super-synergy effect. Let me demonstrate: Combine the very talked about iPhone and not so talked about Nintendo DS, and what do you get? Music. More specifically, the iBand. Two softwares for the iPhone, namely PocketGuitar and iAno and a software for the DS called Electroplankton come together to form beautiful experimental music which holds great promise. What happened here is that two devices with possibly no relation to the other have created super-synergy. The DS allows one to play both games and create music; the iPhone, among other things allows you to make phone calls and create music as well. The following is the result:

Here is an article by Gizmodo about the iBand. What do you think of the possibilities of both the iBand, and innovation with technological convergence?

Kooky Japanese media artist Toshio Iwai — creator of musical toy Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS — recently launched a full-blown electronic musical instrument in collaboration with Yamaha. The Tenori-on (which apparently translates as “sound on your palm”) looks like something people will be more inclined to fool around with than perform upon. Then again, it sounds gorgeous. Too bad owning one will run you roughly $1,200.00! Here’s hoping these things move into mass production.
