Again there was a little tessellation challenge at Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/otdc2009/pool/

The topic was jungle and I thought a long time about what to do and had the idea to fold something like a pixel picture…

I started with a 1:128 grid and a more than 16-level-hex-spread (designed by Eric Gjerde).

I used this as basic for a field of triangle twists, but I didn’t sqashed them all, only the twists which form the picture, in this case the snake, where squashed. As a small decoration I folded some flowers in the center of the model, they are really easy (6 combined hexagons).

All together I folded about 27 hours… the grid was folded on many ways to my school, the hex-spread on my way to Berlin/Potsdam and home again and the final triangles mostly at home…

Out of a Hexagon (Diameter: 36cm) with a 1:64 Grid, the final model has a diameter of about 14cm, it’s very pleat-eating…

1. The unfinished model, with the hex twists squashed, but not the triangle twists

This is my newest Tessellation. It’s a test version and incomplete. On the left is a flower an

This is my newest Tessellation. It’s a test version and incomplete.

On the left is a flower and on the right an arrangement of trapez twists, the folding of both is nearly the same, that’s why this kind of progress was so obvious ^-^ The 3Dness of the flower on the left is inspired by Garibiilan’s “Hexagoned and bleached Red Flower Tess”

At the CP the similarity between the flower and the trapez twist can be seen. The main mountain creases are continouse through the whole CP, only the valley folds and some small mountain folds change.

These are some explanations, because I don’t like to work with CP’s (I can’t read them) and I know some other people have problem with CP’s too.

I’ve started with 8 pleat wide open back hex pleat, surrounded by 6 others, similar to Eric Gjerdes Spread Hex Tess with twice the width (if you don’t know, what I’m talking about, don’t be shy and ask ^-^ I’m not sure if I always use the right term for things)

1. I guess this is similar to this one by Garibiilan

Motivated by Ray Schamps there perhaps will be a Tessellation Show. And I want to participate. Thats why I’m looking trough my models and try to find presentable designs. Yesterday I had a new idea, it’s a variation of my “Flower Diamond Tess”, but less floral, more winterly ^-^

I first made a basic form (picture above) and then variated the center (below left). I’ve drawn a partial CP of the final Tess, with the visible parts of the final Tess shaded, for a better clarity.

While refolding some of my models I recognized, that I didn’t made CPs, but need them to precrease my paper. So I began to draw CPs. This is the first one for this model.

It’s drawn by hand, because I still have no program to do this with my computer.

The solid lines are mountain folds, the dotted ones, are valleyfolds. I coloured the final twists in grey, to make the CP a little bit clearer.

The big red Sahnehäubchen-II-Tessellation had inspired me to experiment.
My Friend said it would look like an Sahnehäubchen, in english it’s a kind of creamswirl, like those on the top of a cake. I like the name more than Double-Hex-Twist-Tessellations that’s why from now I want to call it Sahnehäubchen ^-^

Even if this one does not really look like a swirl ^-^ After the 2. of June I’ll try to make a Foto-Instruction.
On the right is my newest tiny model, the Sahnehäubchen in the middle is surrounded by Triangeltwists, but this time the Triangletwists conceal the outer parts of the Sahnehäubchen, that’s why it doesn’t look so swirly ^-^
