Okay, so I watched bits and pieces of the Cavaliers and Wizards game when I wasn’t watching Modern F

Okay, so I watched bits and pieces of the Cavaliers and Wizards game when I wasn’t watching Modern Family (Wednesday nights at 9:00 PM on ABC) and I wasn’t really impressed. That is in general and on an individual basis for players on either team, except for Antawn Jamison. And Mike Miller. And the incredible Earl Boykins, but not for the same reason as the other two gentlemen.

First of all, the Cavs have had a problem for a while now, dating back to their series with the Magic, of not remembering that the game is 60 minutes long and doesn’t end until the final buzzer sounds. That may seem a little Madden-esque in its obviousness, but the Cavs can’t seem to put good to great teams away after earning a lead.

The reason why the Cavs lost last night could be attributed to many factors, facing a team with more glaring talent not among them. What I felt was the deciding factor is that Cleveland was outhustled by a Wizards team that needed a victory more than the Cavaliers did. The Wizards outrebounded the Cavaliers 49-35, and 16-6 on the offensive boards.

And there are even reasons for this lopsided rebounding total that can be excused by some on the Cleveland side. The Cavs played without Shaq, who despite his lost talents is still a big body that can sway a rebounding battle, especially with Brendan Haywood. Along with that, energy boost and all around hustler Anderson Varejao was noticeably absent from the Cavaliers.

It is very true when anyone says “you don’t know what you got until its gone”. A player’s value is most noticeable when he is no longer there. It happens all the time to any team that trades a significant player, and is most glaring when it is a midseason move. Remember the Chauncey Billups/Allen Iverson swap? Of course you do, who doesn’t? Billups was the wheels for the Detroit vehicle; he allowed it to flow smoothly and without much interruption. He was the distributer and leader of a team of veterans that lost focus after he left.

I could even notice it with Rashard Lewis being absent from the Magic’s first ten games where his excellent three-point shooting at the power forward position was glaringly absent and teams played the Magic like a standard team with Brandon Bass in the paint.

What does this mean for Cleveland? It means nothing as long as LeBron’s injury isn’t serious enough for him to miss major playing time. The Wizards and Cavaliers will see each other at least two more times, and nobody would be surprised if they met up in the playoffs and rekindled some of that magic from yesteryear. However, a fully healthy Cavaliers team should beat a fully healthy Wizards team more often than not, unless Gilbert can become near superhuman as he has in the too distant past for my liking.

How could I not have spoken about the most recent uprising that Allen Iverson is leading yet? To me, it is the best thing for Allen to do, even though it is some extremely childish behavior (if you don’t give me what I want, I will pout and make it miserable for everyone). Going to New York wont solve his problems, unless his only true problem is he wants to start again.

I thought at this point that Iverson would have seen that the end is drawing near and he should try and cement his legacy in the league by being on a contender once again. But, Iverson has always been the bronco that was impossible to break. You can think that you finally had the saddle on him and were calmly riding him around the ranch when he bucks you 15 feet into the sky only to have you crashing down on your fragile skull.

I thought that the Bobcats are the ideal situation for Iverson until they traded for Stephen Jackson, almost assuring no Iverson and Brown reunion. I don’t understand the Bobcats yet, but I hopefully will eventually. They are going through so much player turnover to try and find an identity that can bring more victories than headaches; maybe Jackson is that piece that can steady the ship.

He assuredly brings some much needed scoring and the Bobcats traded away Raja Bell who is having wrist surgery and Vladimir Radmanovic who didn’t play that often for Charlotte anyway. So I would say that is a net positive for the Bobcats if they can play Jackson at the 2, Gerald Wallace (the human tornado) at the 3 (or visa versa), then they could have some solid scoring potential from their wing players.

I have a Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Ruins episode recap if you want one, and we all know you do. Here it is:

Jack Daniels leads to an angry and drunk Brad who takes it out on his female teammates at first. Then, in a foolish and life-threatening move, Brad focuses his drunken rage onto Darrell Taylor, a muscular black man who was a boxer for 8 years and had a bit to drink himself.

Brad, not realizing the physical harm that could be inflicted, provoked Darrell, sending Darrell into a blind rage where he took Brad to the ground and punched him in the face multiple times. The results were twofold: first, Brad’s eye swelled up and made him resemble the elephant man, the second was both Darrell and Brad were kicked off, leaving the Challengers with only one male competitor left (Dunbar).

Then, Kelly Anne, who is someone who you can watch easily with the volume muted, started arguing with Dunbar because she heard that he was bragging about, uh, having relations with her. Dunbar denied ever proclaiming such heroics, but Kelly Anne insisted and really messed with the little team chemistry that remained.

The actual challenge was not all that exciting; they traversed hanging fences a couple hundred feet in the air. No big deal, the champions won, as always. So the champions sent in Katie to face Kimberly (the secret racist who doesn’t know any better) and they sent in Johnny Bananas (not his real last name, just a nickname) to face Dunbar, the lone male on the challengers. The episode ending with a “to be continued”, which is always disappointing and frustrating since I devoted an hour of my night to see who gets kicked off.

I really hope that the teams are mixed up better next season. For a couple of seasons now, one team dominates, which is not fun. You wouldn’t want to watch a Yankees-Royals series for 3 straight months would you? Next season they are doing a rehashing of “Fresh Meat”, which introduced us to the lovely, Evan, Kenny, Evelyn, Diem, and Casey.

I didn’t like “Fresh Meat” and I am not fond of them doing it again, unless they can’t secure enough former cast members to come back. There really is no difference between these newcomers and the former casts of the Real World or Road Rules; they all want fame and attention but don’t want to do much other than work on their bodies and get paid for it. Still, it’s the principle of the matter.

Onto a more ridiculous topic: the Cleveland Browns. Firing Eric Mangini before the season is over is a bad idea. It won’t turn the team around this season and leaves the team without an identifiable leader. Perhaps though, they could replicate the 49ers last season, which fired Mike Nolan and replaced him with Mike Singletary, who seems to be a good fit with that young team. Who would replace Mangini though? My best guess would be Rob Ryan, twin brother of Jets head coach Rex. He brings fire and enthusiasm, things Mangini seems to be purposefully eliminating from his memory bank.

And to my beloved Brady Quinn, who by all accounts last week, sucked. I can even admit that he did not play well at all. However, his two interceptions bounced off of receivers’ hands, which is in part his fault for not timing the throws better or putting them in a better spot. However, Steve Young, who knows a little bit about playing quarterback, said that not even Peyton Manning or Tom Brady could succeed with the talent level around Quinn (and for that matter Anderson).

The Browns have young offensive talent who may not be as good as some presumed them to be. And those players who could make plays last year were removed by Mangini as an attempt to establish dominance, which seems to me to be inherent with the position of head coach but whatever. Plus, the Browns were facing a Ravens team that was embarrassed and angry about their performance in the previous weeks leading up to the matchup.

All I am saying is that the Browns, and specifically Quinn, had no chance of succeeding. And another thing, everyone who is complaining about the throws during the last couple of seconds during the game that sailed out of bounds should shut up. Did that change the outcome of the game or were they meaningless attempts that were more symbolic than consequential? Sure, I would have liked to see the receiver have an opportunity to make a play, but Cribbs (the target) was triple covered with no hope of success. There were a lot of things to pick apart in Quinn’s game on Monday, but that should not be one of them.

I am starting to believe that Quinn will never be able to succeed in Cleveland, especially not with this coaching regime that removed all confidence he had in them when they benched him. Perhaps a change in scenery is the only way the Quinn can start over and become the quarterback a lot of people thought that he could be.

Seriously though, and I have said this before, Quinn is not the type of quarterback that can succeed with average talent around him. He needs a playmaker to find the openings in the defense. He needs someone who can turn a 5-yard catch into a 20-yard explosion. Or he needs an incredibly great safety valve that he can dump the ball to when in trouble (like he had in Kellen Winslow before Mangini removed him).

Oh, and one more thing. It boggles my mind that the Browns have not given Josh Cribbs the money he not only deserves, but is continuing to earn. He is the only reason the watch Browns games right now, he works hard on special teams (returning and covering), and he has done everything that is asked of him. Yet, the Browns have yet to figure out that it would be a good idea, no, great idea to resign him and give him a lot of money.

Made in Jamaica DVD

Dancehall as a genre will always recieve a bad reputation due to worldwide negative media portrayal. No body seems to look at dancehall like Hip Hop , dancehall is a reflection of its environment. Dancehall artists are not going to talk about Bentleys and Mansions if they coming from hardknock Spanish town or Portmore. Instead of looking at dancehall negatively , we should look at it as a creative force that still belongs to ”us” and is not run by the corporate heads at Vivendi , Universal or Warner.

In addition to the Ak47 riddim, Black House has recently produced some Sizzla singles including Rasta Bless, Yea Yea Make It Right, and Youth Empowerment. Since 2004, they’ve been laying so low their website has fallin off the web…reggae business is tough business, but in this day and age, you gotta have your web presence on lock! Hopefully the dancefloor bangers by Beenie, Elephant Man, Natural Black and Wayne Marshall can get ‘em back on their feet.

Chi è davvero Asia Argento? Oggetto del desiderio, personaggio borderline, figlia d’arte, musa, madr

Chi è davvero Asia Argento? Oggetto del desiderio, personaggio borderline, figlia d’arte, musa, madre, attrice, regista. Cattiva, lunatica. O dolce? È un difetto tipico di noi giornalisti quello di definire, incasellare. Quindi questa volta non commetteremo l’errore. Anche perché, lo dice lei, “dentro di noi ci sono cento personaggi”. In cerca d’autore probabilmente.

Playlist Rotation Top 21

These tracks are currently the latest that I’ve been listening to the past few weeks. I love trawling other websites and finding music which literally brings music to my ears-the beats, rhythms and lyrics make an impact on me somehow. Search these on Youtube for a listen, then download it from somewhere…legal ocourse! Listen Up!

21 ) Aaron Carter ft. Flo Rida-Dance With Me – I know what you’re thinking…Aaron ‘I Want Candy’ Carter…well he’s all grown up, and even though you might think of Flo Rida as a sell out, the song works in a commercial pop/rnb way..it’s quite catchy and Aaron Carter has a nice slight husky voice.

20 ) DJ Diamond Kuts ft. Ron Browz, Nicki Minaj & Latif-Strippin In The Club (Radio Edit)- This is an interesting collabo…on one hand you got Ron ‘Ether Boy’ Browz doing his autotune thing and then you have Nicki Minaj who has a British accent or something and even does an Australian accent…this song is kinda all over the place but you can’t help but sing about girls strippin in the club.

19 ) Jesse McCartney ft. T Pain-Body Language- Why are all these pop artists hooking up with rnb/hip hop artist? This is another mainstream song aimed to widen Jesse’s bubblegum pop audience to something different…but I like it and it works- I enjoy T Pain’s little harmonies here and there…although Jesse singing about a girl “breaking it down articulately” is a bit funny

18 )Trazz ft. Drake-All They Wanna Talk About- Cute beat reminds me of some kind of old Nintendo style instrumental with a bass overlay…Trazz calling Victoria’s Secret ‘Vicky’s Secret’? No no leave the name…but apart from that it’s all good even down to the deep morphed voice saying the same thing over and over again.

17 )Get Cool ft. Petey Pablo-Let Me C It- I can imagine a dance battle to this song…I’m pretty sure this song samples a bit of Ciara-Goodies which Petey ‘Freak-A-Leak’ Pablo went in on too.

16 )Elephant Man-All Night Affair- Elephant Man samples the melody from Jay Z and Rihanna’s ‘Run This Town’- for the chorus only. It’s a nice dancehall twist and this definitely gets the hips swaying.

15 )Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne & Swizz Beatz-I Can Transform Ya- Sounds like a mechanical influence with a slight guitar rift in there. Something different from the usual Chris Brown stuff…took me a few listens to get used to it, but I get it now.

14 )Three Six Mafia-Shake My Ass- Not much to this song other than a girl shaking her ass in a club-sounds hoochie-like but this song gets into your head…can definitely see this playing in a club.

13 )Drake ft. Marleik-Can We Be- Not sure who Marleik is but he has a good sound…and we all know who Drake is- he does most song’s proud and this is one included…a nice laidback song you can chill to.

12 )Sean Paul ft. Keri Hilson-Hold My Hand-A cute song with a Carribean-love style beat…this pairing works and fills me with lots of love and rainbows and unicorns…a song for couples for sure.

11 )Yung Ram ft. Dez-Weekend- A relaxed song to chill to as well…talking about chilling on the weekend after a busy week. The collabo works nicely and also uses the infamous autotune ofcourse!

10 )Pitbull ft. Honorebel- I Wanna- Sampling a bit of Ludacris’ ‘Let Me Be Your Fntasy’ this song is this perfect song to go down on. Fun under the sheets with this song which doesn’t need to hide anything…it’s all out there what you should do! Pitbull tells you in a whisper ’I wanna touch you/kiss you/ freak you/fuck you/lick you/tease you/please you/suck you/i wanna make you come!”…I wonder who he’s singing this to?!?!

9 )50 Cent ft. Ester Dean-Hard Rock- Ester Dean is a singer-songwriter and shes gonna be hot-definitely keep a watch on her! Another commercial song…not really meaningfull but I like her voice in here although there is an autotune influence once again…but she wants you to know that you can touch wherever you want but please don’t touch her ass…must be worth a lot?

8 )Jay Sean ft. Sean Paul & Lil Jon-Do You Remember- Another repeptitive yet catchy rnb tune…this song is fine with Jay Sean and Sean Paul but wtf is with Lil Jon doing? I don’t tknow why he is in on this…all he does is scream ‘hey!’ ‘let’s go!’ and ‘bring it back!’…was he supposed to make the song not look like candy rnb-which I’m not against? Overall good song, except they should get rid of Lil Jon sorry.

7 )Drake ft. Lil Wayne, Kanye West & Eminem-Forever- Drake kills it again- he makes this track. Simple beat and every verse makes it-wouldn’t cut anything out. Love Drake when he sings soft-but he never does it live!

6 )Lil Wayne ft. Gudda Gudda, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Tyga, Jae Millz & Lloyd-Bed Rock- Kinda corny, but funny with the line “Call me Freddy Flinstone/I can make your bed rock”…this tune is awesome with the simple oriental strumming influence…Lloyd does what he does…sweet and soft harmonies…love this but this song has far too many verses or is that just me?

5 )Plies ft. Keri Hilson-Medicine (2nd Version Edit)- The new doctor’s anthem haha…this version is better than the original which was too sugary and sweet….this one has a little extra sumfin that makes it. I’ll take medicine from Plies anyday if he keeps spitting verses like this (except he ain’t the prettiest guy out there so maybe not in person) and Keri makes beautiful on her part.

4 ) Chris Brown -So Cold- This track is amazing! Can’t help listening to it. You might think it’s some typical rnb tune to chuck into a backroom but its sad in a way. Is it to Rihanna? Who knows-unless Chris says it himself! But there would be a lot of speculation. Here he talks about how its so cold without someone and he misses them and wants them to come back. Massive heartwarmer.

3 ) Kevin Cossom ft. Snoop Dogg-Relax- One for cruising in the car or trying to get down when your in the mood. Kevin Cossom knows what to do with his voice and kills it in this one- beautiful softness. Snoop Dogg is good in this song too but KC wins.

2 ) 50 Cent ft. Ne-Yo-Baby By Me (Remix)- There are two versions of this. One is on 50’s new album ‘Before I Self Destruct’ which features Jovan Dais (whom I’ve never heard of) , but the version with Ne-yo is to be released for radio. Sampling one of his own song’s ‘I Get Money’ 50 does this song good-this will bring him back commercially for sure, opening up his fan base even further. Try to not listen to this on repeat-its so hard!

1 ) Ester Dean ft. Chris Brown-Drop It Low- Woooooo I wanna hear this in the club…this is a perfect club banger for Ester Dean as a first release plus having Breezy in on it too adds that X Factor. Everyone get’s ‘Low’ to Flo Rida…now I wanna see everyone ‘Drop it low’ to Ester Dean…it’s gonna go off! Can’t help but move it!

“Now this won’t hurt a bit.” Ever heard a doctor say that right before she freezes an extra toe off (also known as cryosurgery)? Don’t believe her. She is a liar, a dirty hateful whore of a liar. I don’t know if it’s the freezing or the scraping of the bone that hurts worse, but having gone through both once before with an extra bird like talon on my foot, the whole procedure wasn’t one that I ever wanted to experience again (even vicariously). So when my child was born with three extra toes on his foot, I wanted to give alternative treatment a try. Enter duct tape.

What convinced me to try duct tape toe removal were the results of a study reported in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (October 2002). The study was conducted at the Madigan Army Medical Center near Tacoma, Washington on 51 patients (ages 3-22) with extra digits or limbs. (Seattle and Tacoma have a rivalry of sorts so Seattleites in particular enjoyed this study as it gave us plenty of new material.) Of those 26 patients treated with duct tape, 85 percent amputated the extra body part. Doesn’t sound like that impressive of a success rate? The 25 patients who received cryosurgery had only a 60% rate of success.

So fuck you mutter museum for not accepting my bird like talon in a jar into your exhibit. You’ll be getting yours soon enough.

Birthday sex. That sex that can only happen to you one day a year. Like a beautiful sunrise on the Mediterranean or the smell of a new car, birthday sex is a thing of ephemeral beauty. It can also be sloppy and drunk. Today is Sto’s birthday sex day and as a tribute to a great man it is fitting to display some of his most noted anthems from the past years. It is hoped that by knowing these songs you may get to know Sto better in a sense. Enter the door that leads to his world…

Elephant Man – Jiggy Body (zshare)

Elephant Man is one of Sto’s favourite dancehall artists of all time. He is one of Walmer’s and you can tell it by the amount of times we have written about him. Try it. Look up all the times if you don’t believe us. Did you do it? Good. Now you know. This song is like a shitty club in Pickering or Mississauga song but it still is awesome. Sometimes those shitty clubs are the best time ever. In fact, it is rare that we have had a bad time at any of them. No motherfuckin pretensions. Just a bunch of drunk people looking to fuck and have fun. Maybe they are looking for birthday sex.

Crookers – Knobbers (zshare)

This one is another Sto favourite and is one of Crookers’ best they ever made. If you listen to this, the Salmon Dance remix, the Dirty Basement remix and the Gatas Gatas Gatas remix you have heard all the best of Crookers. This is another Sto favourite of Crookers. We talk about Crookers a lot on here even though we shouldn’t because if you have heard their new song with Kardinal Offishal you would know that right now they have chosen a shitty path. PS: Big Money Comin’ is also a great song they did. Look it up. Go to school.

Lexxus – Ring Up Me Cellie (zshare)

We are not sure if this is one of Sto’s favourites but he better not have a problem with having his name attached to one of the best dancehall tracks of all time. If you don’t know this song and you say you like dancehall then you should feel insecure right now. You need to take that bass out of your voice son.

Dj Assault – No Vaseline (zshare)

This is what Sto would call a “christmas song”. From what we understand that means the song has a joyous feeling to it. Obviously the lyrics don’t count because this is about here we go, beat that ho. What is amazing about this song is it uses the music from the show Jeopardy to talk about beating that ho. We know that when you watch Jeopardy and you here the music you are thinking of beating a ho. It just the thing that happens in a person’s mind when they here it. It’s normal. You’re normal.

___________________________________________________

One of the more charged terms in the abortion debate is the word “murder.” Those who are pro-life use this term quite a bit, calling abortion murder, whereas those who are pro-choice think equating abortion to murder is egregious rhetoric. Of course, the issue is quite simple; if the fetus is a human being, then the intentional killing of the fetus in murder (with few exceptions). If the fetus is not a human being, then killing the fetus is no more an act of murder than killing a wild animal that threatens livestock, or killing off numerous skin cells by taking a shower.

That is what the abortion debate – and multiple other life debates, such as what to do with the disabled, the mentally retarded, the terminally ill, and the like – hinges upon; is “it” human?

As seen in Part 5 from the Intrinsic Value series, being a human being means that you have certain rights, the most foundational of those rights being the right to life. All other rights are based upon this one right. Without a right to life, ultimately we have a right to nothing. This right is not given to animals, nor is it given to inanimate objects; this right is placed solely on humans.

Human, All Too Human

To provide a brief overview of the last parts, we determined that a human is both material an immaterial (though it is not necessary to believe this in order to believe that humans have intrinsic value); the material aspect of humanity is shared among humans in our DNA. Humans are individual human beings and though at times reliant upon other humans for our existence, we are ontologically separate from other human beings. We are self-aware, we have the ability to forgo our instincts, and we are creative.

We are individuals at every stage of development; no matter how much our bodies change, who we are doesn’t change. Thus, once a human, always a human. When our essence changes, this means that we have ceased to be, that is, we have died.

So the question comes up – what about those who do not show the attributes of being a human? What of those that show no capacity for reason, are tinier than other humans, are inching closer to death, are in vegetative states, or so on and so forth? This seems to be the question of the day. Often times abortion rights advocates will declare, “It’s a woman’s uterus; what she is killing inside her uterus is not human” and seek to provide a justification. When we kill the severely deformed, the advocacy is, “they are not really humans.” Or, as the Nazi father from the movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas says about the Jews, “Those people aren’t really people.”

General Thoughts Concerning Humanity

There are, I believe, a few overriding principles in determining what does and does not qualify as human. The first principle is one of negation – negating the idea that how big we are plays into whether or not we are human. The second principle deals with a negation of the belief that someone must look human in order to be human. The third principle deals with the negation of the quality of life argument. The fourth principle deals with developing non-arbitrary standards for determining what is and is no human; that is, we need to find characteristics that all humans share in essence, rather than looking to the accidents of humanity and confusing those with the essence. It ties together the three previous principles and summarizes an adequate view of humanity.

Size

When people advocate embryonic stem cell research, abortion, or even infanticide, one of the arguments used is as follows: “An infant/fetus/embryo is simply too small to be a human being. Humans are measured in feet, not in inches.” This argument is generally a layperson appeal, once that is often heard on TV talk shows or some other similar medium; the reason for this is that such an argument is hardly academic.

The reason the argument doesn’t qualify as an academic argument is because there is no non-arbitrary standard to determine who is and is not human. Scientifically, there is no cardboard sign saying, ‘You must be this tall in order to be human.’ How do we determine how tall one must be before qualifying to be human?

Does this mean midgets are a different species than humans because of their size? It can’t be so since midgets come from humans and can produce humans. Considering the law of biogenesis, this would make midgets humans.

If we determine a happy medium of size, does this mean those closer to that medium have more rights than others? Does this mean that a male who is 5’10” holds more rights than Yao Ming?

Thus, the argument from size just doesn’t work. If someone who is 3 feet tall qualifies as human, why not someone who is three inches in length? Why not someone who is three millimeters? If the person who is three millimeters in length doesn’t qualify as a person, why not the person who is three inches tall?

Looks

One of the greatest movies I have seen is The Elephant Man. In the movie, John Merrick is born with a disease that leaves him extremely deformed in his appearance, rendering him to look extremely different from the average human being. The pivotal moment in the movie is when he ventures out and people begin to follow him, angry that this monster had come into their midst. As he is backed into the corner he begins to yell, “I am not an animal! I am not an animal! I am a human being!”

Though it makes for great cinema, if we accept the argument that someone must look human in order to be human, then John Merrick doesn’t qualify. He is an animal, but he is not a human being. Thankfully, not only is this great cinema, but it is true as well; looks have little to nothing to do with being a human being.

How do we determine what “looks” human? Are we to say that the “Elephant Man” (and those who suffer from the same disease) aren’t really human, even though they hold all the universal capacities that other humans do? Are we to say that a child who has been severely burned in a fire and thus lacks all the facial features that humans have is no longer a human being?

If we are allowed to determine the above, then can we say that white people look human, but no one else does? Or can we argue that one must have slanted eyes and yellowish-brown skin in order to be human; all others do not qualify? Certainly we believe that all humans, regardless of skin color, facial features, or deformities qualify as a human being.

So why not an embryo? Why not a fetus? Why not a significantly deformed individual? If a white person or black person or brown person qualifies as a human being regardless of looks, why not others? What constitutes “looking” human? Having all four limbs (what of those in accidents)? Having chiseled features? Being Aryan? What qualifies as “looking human”?

Quality of Life

Another argument that is often used, especially in end-of-life issues, is the argument about the quality of life. We argue that someone who is a paraplegic doesn’t have a high quality of life. Someone facing an imminent death lacks a quality of life. An aborted baby who wasn’t wanted was facing a life without quality. This is usually how the argument goes.

However, who determines what constitutes “quality” when it comes to life? I currently reside in an extremely small room with little income. There are those in the world who have no home at all and no income. Their quality of life is significantly lesser than someone who’s income is ten million dollars a year. Does this mean the poor person lacks a proper quality of life and therefore deserves to die? Then again, the person who makes $10 million a year could be corrupt and therefore miserable, meaning he lacks a certain quality in life. Shall we kill him instead?

There simply is no unified definition on what it means to have a qualitative life. What is quality to one person may be the lack of quality to another. What is sufficient quality to one person could be insufficient for another. Someone who developed properly may look at someone with Down’s syndrome as lacking quality in life. A person with Down’s syndrome, however, may believe he has quality no matter what.

There will never be a unified understanding of what it means to have a “life of quality.” The reason for this is that it varies from person to person and from culture to culture.

The above aside, we forget that humans are intrinsically valuable. Thus, if one is human, one has value, no matter the quality of the circumstances. And that’s the kicker – it’s not the life that has quality or lacks quality, it’s the circumstances the life happens to be in. A poor person might have a life of low quality, but give him $1 million and his quality could improve. A person with “lock-in syndrome” may have a life of low quality, but find a cure and the life gains quality. This has nothing to do with the life itself, but instead with the circumstances in which the life is placed.

If we accept the “quality of life” argument, then not only can we never properly determine our own quality of life, but our humanity is circumstantial! This is an absurd belief because it means we would be changing our species dependent upon our circumstances, but this flies in the face of both philosophy and science.

If we accept the quality of life, then we have to argue that it is less evil to kill a person with a broken leg than a person with two working legs. After all, the person with the broken leg has a lowered quality of life (i.e. can’t perform the tasks that a fully functioning human can) even though it’s just the circumstances. But if humans are intrinsically valuable, then it does not matter if you kill a properly functioning human, a human with a broken leg, or a human paralyzed from the neck down; you have killed someone of value and therefore have committed a heinous error.

Humans have intrinsic value, thus no matter the circumstance, no matter how strained a life is, the life is valuable. Even if the circumstances do not allow for a high quality of life, they are irrelevant to the fact that the life is valuable. A dollar bill may be crumpled up, have dirt on it, and even a tear, thus rendering it a low quality dollar bill, but it’s still just as valuable as another dollar bill that has been freshly minted. Likewise, a human may have circumstances and situations that lower the quality of life he has, but he is still valuable simply by existing.

A Non-Arbitrary Standard

Finally, as hinted at in all the above principles, a standard for what qualifies as human must be non-arbitrary. That is to say, there must be a solid justification for the line drawn, one that can be universally applied, and one that cannot be applied to other similar situations.

The first problem with an arbitrary standard is that it does not allow for any justification. For instance, if someone says, “You must look human in order to be human,” this qualifies as an arbitrary standard; what does it mean to “look human?” One person can say, “have the facial features and all four limbs.” Another person can take it further and say, “have blonde hair and blue eyes.” The second person might unsettle us, but what rational objection can we offer to say he’s wrong? Simply put, we can’t say he’s wrong because we’ve drawn the line arbitrarily.

This means that such standards can quickly be turned on us. If we argue that only the athletic have rights, we might prove our case. But if we are in an accident and no longer athletic, then we have given up all our rights, though we haven’t changed as a person. We haven’t changed, just our ability to actualize our capacities; an arbitrary standard would take this into consideration. A non-arbitrary standard would ignore it.

Conclusion Thus Far…

What should be learned from the above four sections is that whenever we provide a universal standard of humanity, we must do our best to make sure such a standard is non-arbitrary. An arbitrary standard, even if well intended, can have negative consequences.

In the next section of Part 6 I’m going to explain why an embryo/fetus, an infant, a disabled person, a mentally handicapped person, the terminally ill, and the elderly are still human beings and therefore valuable. The conclusion will be simple; unless you are dead you have a right to live.
