DIRTY PROJECTORS

One of the characteristics of the most interesting bands that have arisen in the U.S. musical scene is the dificulty to apply any labels. That categorization is needed to insert it in the musical market rules, just like a supermarket: “if you want post-rock-folk-trance, please go to the shelf 10X“.
When a group produces a music which is difficult to classify in the market criteria, will certainly be seeking new in the music and imposing its own identity. which is needed today to find out new and better works, combining talent and music knowledge with technologic resources available.
So the band Dirty Projectors (one more from Brooklyn) just brings exactly this to our ears and brains.
David Longstreth, leader of the band, have begun the project of experimental-rock in 2002 that included opera, electronic music, jazz, folk, African music, punk rock, among others.
Using all the resources of the contemporary music, that have been creating and producing sophisticated works, as could be seen and heard throughout the last years and is particularly refined in the last album Bitte Orca and th EP Temecula Sunrise. Longstreth could be viewed as this generation’s answer to Byrne, says BRANDON STOSUY.
Hype aside, the music of Dirty Projectors deserves attention: they are using all the resources of the contemporary music and exploring the limits of their own ability to create, and they are just in a good track.

Maybe it’s the midnight sun or even aurora borealis phenomenon, but the fact is, musical scene in Iceland has some good and really creative bands.

Have you ever heard about Múm? First time someone told me about this band, it was classified like a band that make some delicious little noises to our ears.These so called “little noises” is the band’s musical proposal: experimental music, eletronic effects and remixes.

Also from Iceland, with a similar proposal and coming from the same decade, the Sigur Rós band also uses musical resources like delicate vocals and experimentalism.

But before those two band came up, there was a little eskimo lady trying her luck in the music world, that’s right, Björk. Eccentric, fresh and full of creativity, we may say that this avant-garde singer had opened up doors to other bands, that, later had drunk up a little in her source.

In the beginning it was the emptiness, so arrived the artists. Not necessary there was the light but slowly arrived the audience. After all, in spite of the light or the darkness, arrived the New York Times.
Neighborhood of immigrants, poor and therefore properties at affordable prices, attracted artists and their marginal, experimental and daring proposals.
Music students, musicians, singers are creating what might be called a sound of their own neighborhood, permeated by influences of the whole world that are opposed to exhausted pop trends. Instrumental, electronic and psycodhelic music, rock and brass bands, concret music, funk, jazz. So this is Brooklyn. Now the nightlife have grown up: clubs, art gallery, recovered buildings and, of course, the speculative boom.
Setting the highlight on Brooklyn, let’s read Al Margolis talking in 2006 about the beggining, in this article published @ The Brooklyn Rail.

A PRE HISTORY OF LIVE EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC IN BROOKLIN (Dec, 2006)

The timing of this article may be perfect. As I write, the New York Times has just published a piece about the renaissance of rock clubs in New York City in the post-CBGB era, citing Brooklyn as “the biggest growth area.” Well, twenty years ago there may have been musicians living in Brooklyn, but you certainly couldn’t get anyone to come into Brooklyn to see music. How do I know? We tried.
In 1985, after some time living on the West Coast, I moved back to the ancestral home of Brooklyn. In 1986 Doug Walker of the post-spacerock group Alien Planetscapes began having concerts in his third-floor walkup over a fish store on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope. (Sadly, Doug died this past April.) These were the days of the cassette network, where you found out from magazines like Op, Sound Choice, and Option about who was making and trading interesting music without commercial considerations worldwide—by mail. (Among the almost–household names who have come through the cassette scene are Merzbow, Jim O’Rourke, Amy Denio, Francisco Lopez, John Hudak, and many others.)
To quote cassette-network pioneer Carl Howard: “In the mid-1980s, the explosion of alternative music networking through things called audio cassettes was at its peak. Doug Walker had already offered the world both duet and trio versions of Alien Planetscapes with fellow-traveller performers such as Louis Boone (Born to Go; The Land of Guilt and Blarney; Friends of Mescalito) and David Prescott. Performances usually occurred in whatever Brooklyn apartment Doug happened to be living in at the time, due to the inherent bulkiness of the musical equipment, as well as due to the extreme age of some of the analog synthesizers and mixers. “Doug contacted me early in 1986 because he had seen my alternative and self-published music magazine ARTITUDE, and may have been aware that I had been running the cassette label audiofile tapes as well. While Doug had been a cassette trader of live rock and jazz for years, he had also begun trading Alien Planetscapes tapes internationally with like-minded producers of low-budget, self-released music on cassette. It further helped matters that Al Margolis, whose Sound of Pig cassette label was already in high gear by 1986, lived locally as well. Doug began contacting people throughout this DIY network ambitiously.”
There was a small scene happening, and Doug’s was a place to see interesting music and either trade ideas with old friends or meet new ones. Dave Prescott, Arnold Mathes, Barney Jones, Cheryl Sobas, Pat Gillick—some of these people I played with, and some just made music I enjoyed, but the connections, both personal and musical, were invaluable. For example: I had met Cheryl through reading about her in Sound Choice. We got together, then started going to Doug’s. I did a performance with her there along with guitarist Larry Olsen and drummer Paul Richard, and then we all began to play and record in various combinations. Cheryl met Pat, who she still lives with to this day, who was a friend of Ron Anderson of the Molecules, and—well, you get the picture.
Somehow, in 1987, myself, Carl Howard, husband-and-wife experimentalists Dan and Detta Andreana, woodwind player Brian Charles, and bassist/DJ Dave Mandl hooked up with fellow musician David Chevan, who was running a weekly concert series called Bar None at Lauterbach’s, a neighborhood bar in Park Slope. They had a live rock series on weekends and, probably trying to make some extra dough during the week, they gave Chevan a spot. He was busy working on his masters degree and having a kid, so at some point he had to back out, and he passed the series to us. So for seven months in 1987 and 1988 we found ourselves in charge of a weekly new music series. In South Park Slope, Brooklyn.
And it was fun. We all got a chance to play and present not just music but dance and poetry. There was jazz and free-improvisation and electronic experimentation. Musicians who were traveling wanted to play there. An audience? I can never remember ever having more that twenty people (if that many). The series was constantly shifting days—from Wednesday to Thursday to Tuesday. We got some press. We presented, among many others, Amy Denio, Ron Anderson and Yellow Tang, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, Judy Dunaway, Alien Planetscapes, Sue Ann Harkey, Ellen Christi, Jack Wright, Davey Williams, David Fulton, and Charles Gayle, not to mention a long list of poets and dancers.
I think the performances by Demo Moe—a really loud rock improv trio—and E. J. Vodka, who was loud and industrial, and had a real goat’s head that he kicked around, and smashed the place and left it a mess, were the death of the series. The local neighbors were complaining, most of the audience who did come didn’t drink, and I think the owners felt that they could make as much money with a new dartboard as they did with all this “art.” And it would be quieter. So in April 1988 what might have been the only weekly new-music series in Brooklyn died.
We had fun. And now that I no longer live in Brooklyn, and the old neighborhood has Issue Project Room and Barbès and all the other venues—well, it happened before. Just so you know.

Yoko’s K’s “organic electronica” really grows on you. Airy, light, and lounge-able, just hearing her music will make you thirsty for a cosmo. As both a solo artist and the lead singer for Aphrodizia, she creates richly textured compositions. I interviewed Yoko K. for Northern Virgina, and we talked about her approach to composing her special blend of electronica.

“Electronica is the central aspect of the sound of my music, as it uses electronic instruments and technology. It is organic because the music incorporates various nonsynthetic sounds such as voice, classical instruments—flute, sax, violin, percussion, et cetera—played by other musicians and field recordings,” she says.

SUSANNA & THE MAGICAL ORCHESTRA: new album is out

Detachments are a London-based, Northern-affirmed trio led by Lancastrian masterdom, Sebastien Marshal, guitarist Max Moreau (Antwerp, Belgium), and drummer, Pete Dawson (Leeds).

Their musicality is both wide and niche, incorporating the Northern electronic permutations of Factory Records, Eighties androgyne synth-poppers, to modern pioneers such as DFA and Warp Records. Imagine a hybrid victim of New Order, The Cure and Depeche Mode.

Their ability to present abstruse, cold veneers with wistful melodies in pop structures is their magna carta. Their sinewy, incisive rhythms are often interwoven with layers of lush melancholic tonality; sharpshooter shot through with infectious, barbed hooks. “Tuneful pathologies” as the NME ascribes.
Detachments have been working hard with Trevor Jackson, Tim Goldsworthy, and Andrew Weatherall in the studio. Alongside this illustrious talent, the group has collaborated with the enigmatic Salem to dream-pop effect. It’s time for subversion and conversion.

Emerging from the fallout of Oslo’s Grunerlokka club-jazz scene, The Mungolian Jet Set have built a new empire from the debris of musical civilizations both recent and long considered lost. Led by Paul “Strangefruit” Nyhus and Knut Saevik with Reidar Skar lurking in the shades, the Jetset have created a Sonic Laboratory at the heart of their growing empire, and it is from there that strangely beautiful and funky audiomutants issue, their numbers growing day by day.

Although their first release suggested a band hell-bent on producing the spaciest jazz ever heard, it has become clear that the Mungolian Masterplan is much darker and insidious, evolving to produce increasingly distinctive yet completely mind-absorbing beats to underpin a whirling vortex of sonic chaos, psychoacoustic bass warping and lavish and unbridled costumery.

The Jetset itself features a variable personnel, but DJ Strangefruit and Knut Saevik reside at the central hub, keeping a firm rein on jazz musicians, over-enthusiastic panhandlers, technocratic beat peddlers, trance-inducing throbmongers, Fallen Space Nuns, Europop charlatans, Hardcore Boppers, Bardic Word-spitters, Disco Dancers and lethargic Goldclad Divas.

Legends of their remixing skills abound throughout the known world and, some might say, beyond. Defining a Mungolian Jet Set remix is close to impossible, yet the beat is what immediately lets you know that you’ve arrived in the state of Mung. They probe the track carefully, and locate the Mungolian zone within it, before shaking it into a trancelike psychedelic wormhole that snakes through the souls of disco and bucket brigade dub.

Their latest album, We gave it all away, Now we are taking it back, was just released on Smalltown Supersound.

Heads up! Animal Collectives’s ‘Summertime Clothes” 12” vinyl and digital single available July 7th, featuring remixes by DÂM FUNK, L-D, and ZOMBY!

Animal Collective consists of Dave Portner (Avey Tare), Noah Lennox (Panda Bear), Diba Josh (Deakin) and Brian Weitz (Geologist) and emerged in 1996 from the meeting, years before, of Avey Tare and Panda Bear in Baltimore (U.S.). Nowadays they live in diferent countries, but who cares?
Since the early times they have been making psychedelic-rock, folk and experimental music, under influences like The Police, Tornadoes, Jonathan Richman, The Orb Luono, Black Dice, Roy Orbison, Sam Cooke, Scott Walker, Isollee Vilalobos, Daft Punk, and, as Panda call, the brazilian-jazz of Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento and Caetano Veloso.
But this group makes a kind of sound which conquered audiences around the world, specilally for its independence and various musical experiences through the years.
Among the experiences they have created their own label, and use the internet ressources, like videos, free-download, to release their works, also including the LP 12″, like occured with the last album Merriweather Post Pavilion , which occupied the 13th position in the Bilboard Chart. It was the first time, for years that a LP conquered this position.
In spite of this group has a certain fame and is known, I’ll write about this album, next week, but what I want to enfatize is that sofisticated digital ressources are not incompatible with old and classic ressources. like the vynil. So people is looking for good music to be listened in a better way.

To było szare, deszczowe popołudnie w zatłoczonym tramwaju, gdy do ręki wpadł mi tekst Wojtka Kosmy, w którym autor żali się nad nadużywaniem określenia „rozumienie muzyki”, bo „co w muzyce jest do rozumienia?”. To fakt, że szczególnie w odniesieniu do twórczości współczesnych kompozytorów-elektroników te słowa padają wybitnie często i może rzeczywiście zbyt często. Zresztą… zgadzam się z Wojtkiem w zupełności – muzykę opartą na eksperymentach z brzmieniem, fakturą instrumentalną i ogólną koncepcją nie tyle trzeba rozumieć, co lubić. Jeśli kogoś męczy minimalizm, to ciężko zarzucać mu brak np. wiedzy muzycznej. To tylko kwestia gustu.
Ja akurat należę do tych osób, które czerpią sporą radochę z wsłuchiwania się w twórczą zabawę dźwiękiem, choć zawsze wymagam od artysty, by dał mi poczucie, że jego utwór nie powstał przez przypadek typu: „tu wcisnę, tam wcisnę, ciekawe co wyjdzie”. W przypadku, kolokwialnie mówiąc, sprawdzonego Peklera, dyletanctwa obawiać się nie muszę. Tym razem jednak twórca „Strings + Feedback” nie sięga już po jazzowe sample (jak to zwykł robić np. na „Nocturnes, False Dawns & Breakdowns” z zeszłego roku) i w ogóle sięga po niewiele, bo jego najnowszy krążek to czysty przejaw minimalizmu. Jak sam tytuł wskazuje, usłyszymy tu smyczki (ale nie tylko i o tym za chwilę) z feedbackiem. Notabene, jest to niezły współczesny przykład, na którym wyedukować można się w kwestii „jak ze sprzężenia zwrotnego zrobić technikę kompozytorską?” (bardziej zainteresowanych odsyłam do pojęcia Studio Verlag).

Dziesięć utworów ze „Strings + Feedback” to zamaszyście położone plamy dźwiękowe, przypominające momentami twórczość iście ambientową, które towarzyszą selektywnym nutom wydobywanym z instrumentów smyczkowych (w przytłaczającej większości za pomocą pizzicato) i sporadycznym uderzeniom w klawiaturę fortepianu. Całość brzmi na poły mrocznie, na poły industrialnie, ale przede wszystkim jest niezwykle absorbująca. To taka współczesna muzyka „klasyczna”, która na pewno znalazłaby dogodne miejsce na Warszawskiej Jesieni – przy czym prezentuje ona dużo więcej sensu i profesjonalizmu, niż niektóre z samozwańczych „profesjonalnych kompozycji” jakie tam można usłyszeć. Idealna płyta dla wielbicieli szumów, zlepów, ciągów, kontemplacji nad dźwiękiem, miasta, maszyny i Stockhausena.

PROJETO AXIAL

Let’s made no-music, as solution or as alternative for the meanless sound of the begin of this century. Or in another hand, let’s hear and make the same music that was done, 50 or more years ago. Between these proposes there is a great fear: maybe there’s no options to do something new. A kind of fear or worse: make music just to win money, nothing else.
In spite of these questions many musician which are trying and doing, diferent music, a lot of experiences abroad, and I think that there’s much more to do and play in Brazil.
In 2007 I’ve met de Axioma Project, at the Tim Festival. A singer, Sandra Ximenez, a piano and “computer-player”, Felipe Julián and a saxophonist Leonardo Muniz Corrêa, which have been making and experiencing music. They’ve impressed me using brazilian poetry, brazilian folk music, they’re creating a work that must be respected, melting urban music with counntry music, and eletronics.
They’ve just released 2 albuns (Axial, 2004 and Senóide, 2007), and now they’re ending the 3rd, named Simbiose, and they’re invinting the fans to opine and suggest about the new songs. To download all the songs Check it out @ http://www.axialvirtual.com

CRYSTAL FIGHTERS

Whilst Filthy Dukes may have headed up a Hoxton Bar & Kitchen show this week attended by Plugs and supported by dance poppers My Tiger My Timing, forget sweaty fist thumping to the simplistic electro drawl of Friendly Fires’ blueprint as there’s a smouldering iron ready and waiting to brand any venues cold-blooded enough to handle it. Following in the footsteps of Libs recyclers Cazals signing to boutique French/ Japanese label Kitsune, geek chic’s out and freedom fighting for the concept as well as Basque independence (see concept) is well and truly in as west Londoners Crystal Fighters look set to splatter their glitchy folk-tinged call to arms (or lucid legs) over every underground haunt, ramming incontestably dreamy vocals and ridiculously majestic hooks straight down every ear socket. Founding members Sebastian Pringle and Gilbert Vierich fly the flag for retro-infused futurism that flits between filthy breaks and impeccably polished brain jelly euphoria, whilst everything veers further into the surreal with dual frontwomen Mimi Borelli and Laure Stockley competing for the most endearing leading London lady as well as their inevitable appointment into the NME cool list later on in the year. Such is the genre-hopping moguls’ renown that following The Horrors recent Bristol show, an overheard booze-fuelled Tesco chat revolving around how many bands could be named based around the Crystal prefix, the ‘Fighters marked a rite of passage into scenesterdom amongst a trio straight out of Topman’s summer range. Ironic, perhaps but they’ve got a point now that the Castles have crumbled…

Astounding remixes aside, recent hard-hitting EP title track Xtatic Truth demonstrates the delicate intricacy with which the quintet confront the much-needed 21st-century dance music overhaul, whilst I Love London could get anyone worldwide hopping on the next plane to the capital to catch a glimpse of their Favela Chic-esque musical mastery. Dashing, daring and devilishly devastating, forget all you know and muck in with their mangled mayhem.

THE BEST IN THE WORLD: SAO PAULO UNDERGROUND

The principle of intrusive relationship (Submarine Reconds) second album of the Brazilian group São Paulo Underground was elected the best album of 2008 by The Wire. The magazine which is considered the bible of the improvised music world, promoted the choice from the votes of 50 European and American music critics.
The band was created in 2005 by the American trumpeter Rob Mazurek and three Brazilian musicians: Mauricio Takara (drums) Guilherme Granado (percussion, samplers and keyboards) and Richard Ribeiro (second battery). Improvising, combining sounds and ideas of the working group, looking closer to the reality of the city, recording its contradictions and its intangible limitations. Like any new and experimental work, however, is outside of what is expected for the common audience. Worse, following alongside another groups like this, without turn the strangeness caused by these and other new ideas in music to the real audience’s interest. Just check it out the article written by João Marcos Coelho in the Brazilian newspaper Estado de Sao Paulo. The discomfort is now realy necessary to exit from the musical lethargy.

Susanna And The Magical Orchestra in fact a duo with keyboardplayer Morten Qvenild and singer Susanna Karolina Wallumrød. (Morten is a former member of Jaga Jazzist and Shining, he quitted to concentrate on this duo and his own trio called In The Country. He is also a member of Solveig Slettahjell Slow Motion Orchestra and norwegian chart buster The National Bank, and has worked with Nils Petter Molvær and Norwegian pop diva Bertine Zetlitz. )
Susanna and Morten started out as a band in 2000, and played mainly on the norwegian live scene while making their debut album “List of lights and buoys”.
The album was released in Norway in February 2004, and some time later in Europe and in Japan, and received very good critics around the world. “List of lights and buoys” contains highly personal interpretations of Dolly Parton´s “Jolene” and Leonard Bernstein´s “Who Am I” as well as nine originals that show a suprising degree of maturity, especially considering the writers young age and the fact that they operate in a landscape that requires a good deal of songwriting skills to hold your attention. Susanna And The Magical Orchestra combines the availability of the traditional popmusic, the strictness of the electronica and the improvisation in the jazzmusic. Producers Andreas Mjøs (Jaga Jazzist) and Helge Sten (Deathprod, Supersilent) have in different ways and from different positions been crucial helpers in shaping the final result. Helge Sten has also mixed the album.
The duo have performed at festivals and concerts in many big cities, like Tokyo, Barcelona, Rome, London, Manchester, Cardiff, Dublin and Brüssels, always completely captivating the audience with their fragile soundscapes and Susanna´s intimate interpretations of originals and often surprising selection of cover songs. Olá a todos os freaks e loucos por musica dessa nossa rede maluca !

Já algum tempo sem postar , venho aqui hoje tirar a poeira desse estranho blog electronaction …. a ação dos eletrons !

Bom , hoje vou falar pra voçês sobre o mixotic.net .: Uma netlabel crianda por um dj alemão , acredito . Já ha muito tempo que conheço o site e o tinha esquecido , mas navegando por ai um belo dia o encontro novamente e , agora resolvo também compartilhar com voçês .

O conteudo do mesmo não é la muito a minha praia , mas existem grandes excessões e claro o objetivo também é dar dicas para todo mundo e para todos os gostos .

Bom , hoje com este post vou “falar” de um artista magnifico que descobri através do forum do site da DEFECTED.com .: Este é mr : dj Slider . Criador / fundador da RADIO RECORD , uma gravadora , creio eu INdepedente que anda fazendo muito barulho house por toda a russia .

Originado de ST PETERSBURG – RUSSIA , este dj provou e vem provando o porque de ser relativamente famoso na russia , pricipalmente em MOSCOW e ST PETERBURG . Frequentemente convidado para set´s em radios locais , tanto undergrouds como comerciais , Dj slider é enfim o marco da House music nas vertentes SOULFULL , DEEP E VOCAL HOUSE , representando a Russia .

Seus set´s passeiam por uma house cantada , com belos pratos junto a um groove animado e crescente . Sempre presente em seu case , varios projetos do selo da DEFECTED , e outros que não me lembro , pois em materia de selos , gravadoras e afins , confesso que sou meio ignorante pois também são tantos que nos perdemos a milhares de nomes gringos . Enfim o que sei é o que os meus queridos ouvidos ouvem … House animada , dançante e recheadas de classicos que vc se pega cantando dentro do ônibus ou entupindo o seu Ipod / Mp3 com estes set´s que não deixam seu ânimo cair . Sem pretensão de endeusar o artista , apenas revelando minha opinião em relação a tanto som bom que já ouvi e ouço atraves de seus set´s .

Se voçê gosta de house que foge de tudo que seja minimalista e gosta mesmo é de grooove e vocais magnificos , baixem os set´s de Dj Slider ….

Olá a todos freaks , loucos e apaixonados por musica boa e sobretudo eletrônica ! . Dando seguimento a este bizarro blog neste post vou ” falar “ e não só falar como também DESTACAR o papel de um dos gigantes sites da web voltados para a musica e cultura psicodelica mundial . O ISRATRANCE.COM .

Site imagino eu ( não tenho certeza ) baseando em israel , com uma interface laranja e um pouco digamos incomum , ha anos destaque no que diz informação e divulgação do movimento da musica eletrônica psicodelica de todo o mundo afora . O site é sim sem duvidas uma enorme referêcia quando o assuto é tudo o que envolve a cena e corpo do psychedelic trance mundial .

Possui um forum com sub-links divididos por paises em que em cada pagina de cada pais ( os principais onde o movimento trance ocorre ) é possivel atraves destas divisões os membros postarem infos de festas , anuncios e um vareiedade enorme de itens relacionados a trance em geral .

Há tambem a seção de SET´S : Em que djs do mundo todo postam os seus mixes e arquivos de audio gravados por eles tanto em estudio quanto em apesentações ao vivo . Mas o isratrance.com é muito mais do que isto , é um grande portal onde , de tudo e de todos os grandes projetos do mundo afora é possivel obter informações , onde comprar cd´s , lojas on line , infos de festas e festivais , etc….

sem muita lorota , aconselho voçê que esta lendo este texto a fazer uma visita longa pelo site , viajar no forum , conhecer projetos e se interagir com postagens no mesmo forum mencionado logo acima .

olá a todos os freaks e loucos da net .

O blog eletronaction estava meio paradão e com algumas teias de aranha mas , afinal de contas estamos em 2009 e junto a este belo ano novo , novidades quentes e psicodelicas para quem gosta do melhor em materia de musica e psicodelia !

Já ha algum tempo atrás , por meio do forum isratrance.com , achei o podcast deste maluco inglês que se denomina DJ MACKINTOSH !

Talvez pelo fato do cara ser um fiel amante dos computadores da apple : Os macs ! mas isso não importa , o fato é que o dj em questão anda postando excelentes sets do mais puro dark e full on nigth em seus respectivo podcast . Com uma grande variação de generos é possivel ouvir em seus sets transições suaves do progressivo para o pesado e frequente dark trance !

Nada mais sei a respeito do cara , que como esta escrito em seu podcast é da inglaterra , no mais é baixar os sets e pirar na melancia com um som de batidas frequentes e contínuas ; pesados graves e de quebra ainda baixar uns dois sets de psy chill out / ambient music , para poder relaxar depois de tanta quebradeira !

No forum milhares de djs do mundo todo postam seus dj-sets aumentando ainda mais o enorme acervo de musica obscura e psicodelica do site .
