You guys are doing a great job keeping the island safe. You’ve been asking about Mission 11 and I can tell you the team’s working hard to make it really exciting. Since it’s being developed right now, we were actually hoping that you’d be able to help us decide on some stuff that’ll go into the Mission!!

Calculated Power Rankings, Unit Strength, Strength of Schedule, and Estimated Final Record following week 10 of the NFL season. I use an engineering method of iteratively solving for best fit to the data (scores) to create the ranks and related applications that corrects for opponents played.

 Everything is based on correcting the scoring offense and defense of each team for opponents, by calculating the expected scoring against an average opponent, instead of averaging the points scored against the actual opponents played. This allows all teams are evaluated on a level plane. Power is defined as scoring offense minus scoring defense, the list sorted by the net difference.

I run a full season calculation, and a most recent 4 weeks calculation and blend them (4:1) to acknowledge change and teams that are hot/cold.

Power Rank:

New England retains its hold on the top spot, meaning a NE upset prediction is coming for next week in a battle of 1 vs. 2. New Orleans rises past Indy, getting back to #2, slightly behind the Pats. A NO win this week likely will propel them back to #1, a position they held much of the season. Minnesota is finally playing like a top 5 team on the scoreboard, and finally rises up to #4.

Two huge changes this week. Pit takes a big fall out of the top 10. There are two comfortable data points for them, one in the middle of the top 10, one around 16. They have waivered between both all season, almost as if they are two different teams. Incidentally it strongly corresponds to Troy and his health status. San Diego makes a strong upward jump following their blowout of the Broncos. It likely will correct down a bit, but they have been on the move upward for several weeks, similar to last season.

Overall the field is compressing, most of the positive change (via the change indicator) is near the bottom, most of the negative change is near the top. Seems that the top and bottom are correcting, the top isn’t as great as they seemed, and the bottom isn’t as horrible as they seemed. A lot of the leagues bad teams seem to be on the verge of making some real improvement. Tennessee however remains absolutely on fire.

Off = Projected offensive scoring against an average defense (PPG)
O Rk = Rank of offense
Def = Projected scoring by an average offense against the defense (PPG)
D Rk = Rank of defense
Chg = Difference between data run of most recent 4 weeks and full season (hot/cold) (PPG)
C Rk = Rank of change.

Strength of Schedule:

Instead of using points, or quality opponents, etc, the method that I chose to rank the strength of schedule is the average power rank of opponent played. The current power rank is used and each week the full season recalculated.

Seas = Average power rank of all opponents all season
Prev = Average power rank of teams played thus far
P Rk = Ranked difficulty of past schedule
Fut = Average power rank of teams yet to be played
F Rk = Ranked difficulty of future schedule.

Estimated Final Record:

I use the power rank, current record, and future opponents to estimate the final record for the team. The net scoring against an average opponent for one team is subtracted from another to determine who is favored and by how many points.

If a team is favored by 14+ points, I assumed that they win 100% of the time.
If a team is favored between 7 and 14 points, I assumed that they win 80% of the time.
If a teams is favored between 0 and 7 points, I assumed that they win 60% of the time.
If a team is not favored between 0 and 7 points, I assumed that they win 40% of the time.
If a team is not favored between 7 and 14 points, I assumed that they win 20% of the time.

Overall the division leaders remain stable. In the NFC however, Philly has moved into a tie with Dallas in the NFCE. In the NFC wildcard race, the Packers are currently projected to take one WC, and the one that loses the NFCE tiebreaker gets the other. The Giants and Falcons are in WC catchup one game back, SF and Chicago are virtually eliminated. In the AFC the Ravens, Steelers, and Dolphins are the current WC favorites, with the Broncos, Texans, and Jaguars a game back in the chase. The Jets are on the edge of elimination.

I’ve been reading a lot of mystery lately.

I’ve probably read more mystery in the last month than I have in the rest of my life combined.

And I think I like it.

But this is my one caveat: if you’re going to promise me a mystery, then you’d darn well better deliver the goods. If you’re going to present a twist, then it had better leave me open-mouthed, doubled over, and gasping.

Eleven by Patricia Reilly Giff left me shaking my head, rolling my eyes, and feeling cheated.

The premise of the book is that a young boy who lives with his grandfather begins to have strange dreams and memories of his past. He remembers the number eleven, which he thinks is because he’s turning eleven years old. But (dun-dun-DUN!): It’s not!

Possibly because of the previous trauma in his life, Sam is having a hard time learning how to read. He’s the only kid in his class that can’t read very well. One day, he’s in the attic and finds Mack’s secret stash of Sam mementos (“What is this fascination with my Forbidden Closet of Mystery?” – points if you can name that quote), amongst which is a newspaper clipping with a picture of Sam with a headline stating that he’s missing – and has a different last name!!

Intrigue!!

Since he can’t read the rest of the article, he makes friends with the new girl at school, Caroline, who helps him to read the clipping and research what really happened to him.

I won’t spoil the rest of the mystery, but I will say this: some mystery.

The ending of the book to me was like going to a mystery dinner theater and having the host declare: “And the murdered is someone in this very room!!”
(The audience gasps.)
“By the way, the victim of the murder isn’t actually dead. This is just pretend, people.”

Read the book. You’ll see what I mean.

Ms. Giff got me all riled up for nothing. She promises this huge payoff by working up all this intrigue and tension, and she simply doesn’t deliver.

And this book doesn’t even count as a Cannonball Read because it’s not long enough.

Phooey. I’ll be sticking with Trenton Lee Stewart and Ellen Raskin, thanks.

For the past couple of years, the number 11 has taken on an ubiquitous presence in my life. Invariably, when I look at a digital clock to check the time, it will be on the 11th minute of any given hour. Now this doesn’t happen every time I look at a clock, but often enough for me to take notice, and get a little freaked out.  The freaky factor is doubled when the time shows 11:11 or 1:11.  It is tripled when I wake to these numbers.    It was happening so much, especially in 2007-08, that I would glare at the clock and yell out a frustrated ‘what!???”.  I never did get a reply (thankfully!) .  I did, however, type 11:11 into a search engine to see if I could shine a light on what was happening.  To my surprise I discovered that this phenomenon is happening to other people.  A lot of other people.   All over the world.

While no one has been able to definitively say what all this means, many believe it is a spiritual ‘wake-up call’ of sorts.  Others propose that the numbers activate DNA codes, while still others say it is random – just the brain making something out of nothing.  Based on my personal experiences, I go with the awakening theory.

I’ve had an interest in spirituality from childhood,  but that interest has turned into a full-fledged blossoming of consciousness that has permanently altered my view of the world and of reality itself.    When I started getting the number messages (in other forms as well…like seeing 11’s on receipts, on subway cars, on license plates,  just everywhere!) I was leading a pretty ’secular’ life and the most spiritual activity I was involved in was yoga.   Soon, however, I started noticing subtle changes in my thinking and emotions.  I became self-aware of various bad habits and personality traits – almost as if I was watching myself from outside of myself and playing the role of the loving but stern parent.   Over time I corrected myself and around April of 2008  I fell into an emotional state of absolute bliss!   My heart was overflowing with compassion for everybody and everything – all in the midst of New York City, one of the most stressful cities in the world!   That “uber bliss” did not last, but my commitment to refining myself did and I am still more tolerant, aware, loving and compassionate than I had been previously.  I also took it upon myself to learn as much as I could about this mysterious thing called ‘consciousness’ and am still immersed in that study today.  Whatever it is, it is responsible for my inner state and for the 11’s.

I also started analyzing “Eleven” to gain more clarity.  It begins with EL, which in Hebrew means God and has a sense of ‘highness/loftiness’ associated with it (compare ELevator).   The structure of the number is like the Biblical twin pillars of God “Boaz and Joachim” which stand for “strength” and “beauty” – both of which I received inwardly during my blissful stage.    Eleven is also the number of the zodiac house for the sign of Aquarius – the next Age the Earth is moving into.  In the Tarot, the 11th card is “Justice”.   Then there is the Biblical 11th hour.   The Old English etymology of the word eleven means ‘one left’.   Numerologically 11 is a master number and one with the greatest connection to the ‘other side’.  It represents illumination and deep insight.    I’ve received a hefty dose of both since I started seeing the numbers – so much so that I welcome seeing them now, though the frequency of such sightings has decreased now that I’ve stopped hitting the snooze button.  I am in a drowsy alpha state,  and don’t nearly have all the answers, but am awake nonetheless.

This is pretty much all of the information I’ve collected on 11 to-date (along with information on the 11th letter K and its esoteric meaning which I have to digest more before blogging on it -though I will say it is associated with joint problems – something I developed over this same time period).  I look forward to putting all these pieces of the 11 puzzle together for the benefit of all the 11-er’s out there.

This is the second instalment of “texts from The Bear.” It’s quite old, and out of date now, but I was reminded of it last night and instructed to post it. So here, for your reading pleasure, is a film review from The Bear.

“I won’t beat around the bush here. I fucking HATE Colin Farrel. He’s possibly the most annoying and frustrating actor I’ve ever had the misfortune to spend 90 odd minutes watching. And I only went to see ‘In Bruges’ because some fat woman made us late for Iron man. I now must repent. I take back everything I have EVER said about Colin. Throughout this film he is brilliant. Every face he pulls, every action he makes, every word he says….is pure brilliance. And in many cases, pure comic brilliance. The film stands on the sound foundations of a very well written script, one in which you find yourself grinning with delight upon it’s crass, arrogant, bigoted and hilarious vocalisation. It’s a strong runner too. Entertaining to the last, despite being quite slow moving on the whole. Think of it more like a person trying to take in the scenic view of a car accident. Before I needlessly go on for too long, it must be said. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And at points felt like I was going to pass unconcious due to the uncontrollable laughter I had inflicted upon me. Must watch.”

However, I think I’ve stumbled across a more prolific essay-legnth-text-meassage writer. One of which I’ll post very soon indeed.

Ommegang and Cooperstown are on my NY beer list and now add Ithaca as well. They have a couple of noteworthy additions in Brute and Eleven that sound great. Plus they have a nice regular line-up that includes a brown that makes me thirsty.

I may well talk (and write) some utter nonsense when I’m sober, but when I’ve had a drink that nonsense get’s turned up to eleven.

When I’m trying to hold a conversation after having a drink I show no signs of having any thought process whatsoever or, sadly,  a point. And it’s such random nonsense at that, non of which appears to link together.

Smell permeated Cleveland neighborhood where 11 bodies found, residents say

Anthony Sowell's home was the source of an odor that permeated the neighborhood, police say.

CNN—The smell permeated the neighborhood, turning the stomachs of residents and curtailing their outdoor activities.

“We used to think that it was coming from out of Ray’s Sausage,” said one resident. “But you smell these smells, and I live right there and … we used to come out here and oh, these smells would just be horrible.”

Ray’s Sausage Co. replaced a sewer line and grease traps, trying to rid the area of the stench. But Ray’s wasn’t to blame after all. Instead, police said, the foul odor had a much more sinister source.

Eleven victims have been found inside and outside a home adjacent to Ray’s — six inside and five outside. A skull, wrapped in a paper bag and stuffed into a bucket in the basement, apparently is all that remains of one of the 11 victims, authorities said Wednesday.

Anthony Sowell appears in court on Wednesday with public defender Kathleen Demetz.

The home’s inhabitant, Anthony Sowell, 50, is a registered sex offender. Now, Sowell is facing five counts of aggravated murder, rape, felonious assault and kidnapping, police said. A judge on Wednesday denied bond for him, saying the latest allegations against him are “gruesome” and the “most serious” he has heard in his years on the bench.

Seven of the victims died from strangulation by a ligature, said Frank Miller, Cuyahoga County coroner. A ligature can include a string, cord or wire. All of the seven still had something tied around their necks, Miller told reporters.

An eighth victim died from manual strangulation — strangulation by hands. Two other bodies were too badly decomposed to determine the cause of death, although Miller said he believes they were victims of “homicidal violence.” Autopsy results on the 11th victim are pending.

“It’s most likely strangulation in all cases,” Miller said.

Tonia Carmichael was 52 when she was last seen on November 10, 2008, according to police.

The first victim was identified Wednesday as Tonia Carmichael, who was 52 when she was last seen on November 10, 2008, police said in a statement. Carmichael was identified using DNA. She disappeared from Warrensville Heights, a Cleveland suburb near Sowell’s home, and her vehicle was found in Cleveland.

In the missing persons report, obtained by CNN, Carmichael’s mother, Barbara, told police her daughter was addicted to crack and had previously disappeared for several days at a time. But she said she believed something had happened to her because she had not picked up two paychecks.

Tonia Carmichael’s daughter, Danita, told CNN’s sister network HLN the identification did not come as a surprise.

“This is what I’ve been saying since Monday, when, you know, we were called to the coroner’s office and since this story broke, we automatically knew that this was going to be here,” Danita Carmichael said.

Ra is nearly always portrayed with a solar disc above his head, and often takes on the aspect of a falcon. Ra is different from most Egyptian gods. Other than Osiris, nearly all deities of Egypt are tied to the earth. Ra, however, is strictly a celestial god. It is from his position in the sky that he is able to watch over his independent (and often unruly) children. On earth, Horus rules as Ra’s proxy.

For people in ancient Egypt, the sun was a source of life. It was power and energy, light and warmth. It was what made the crops grow each season, so it is no surprise that the cult of Ra had immense power and was widespread. By the time of around the fourth dynasty, the pharaohs themselves were seen as incarnations of Ra, thus giving them absolute power. Many a king build a temple or pyramid in his honor – after all, keeping Ra happy virtually guaranteed a long and prosperous reign as pharaoh.

When the Roman Empire embraced Christianity, the residents of Egypt rather abruptly abandoned their old gods, and the cult of Ra vanished into the history books. Today, there are some Egyptian reconstructionists, or followers of Kemeticism, who still honor Ra as the supreme god of the sun.

Seguramente ya se dieron cuenta de que todos los am/pm han cambiado su nombre por el de 7-eleven. Lo cual en parte me da un poco de tristeza por que yo trabajé en un am/pm cuando estudiaba en Tijuana hace varios años, por lo que le tengo un gran recuerdo a los am/pm’s, además de que era la tienda de conveniencia que mejores cafes tenía y con más variedad, que decir de la parada obligatoria del am/pm donde se encontraban las antiguas casetas de Rosarito.

Entré a los 7-eleven de San Diego y a los de la Ciudad de México y siempre he pensado que no tienen el nivel de los am/pm, al menos no en variedad y calidad de café y comida rapida, en ese aspecto se parecen más a los Oxxos. Sin embargo desconozco hasta el momento si estos nuevos 7-eleven van a seguir ofreciendo la misma variedad y calidad de comida y café de los am/pm o se van a conformar con sus tres hot-dogs y los mismos y reducidos tipos de café que tenian. Supongo que en la semana me echaré una vuelta y lo averiguaré. Por lo pronto la nota de la venta de am/pm de hace algunos meses que me encontré en el sitio altonivel.com.mx.

La cadena de tiendas 7 Eleven en México (Grupo Chapa), adquirió el control de las 104 tiendas de conveniencia de la cadena AM/PM, así como terrenos frente de esos establecimientos que se rentan a gasolineras en el país.

El monto de la operación asciende a US$130 millones. La compra la efectuó, según fuentes cercanas, la compañía inglesa Amoco British Petroleum.

Con esta transacción, luego de que transforme los establecimientos adquiridos en tiendas 7-Eleven, según explicaron directivos, Grupo Chapa extenderá esta cadena de tiendas a más de mil 100 unidades en el país.

El director de Comunicación de Grupo Chapa, Víctor Hernández, indicó que la compra se acordó desde finales del año pasado y la empresa tomó el control de las tiendas a finales de abril pasado.

La transacción sigue la línea estratégica de expansión de Grupo Chapa, que le ha permitido un crecimiento ordenado y constante desde las 500 tiendas con las que se contaba en enero de 2005 a las 990 tiendas a finales de mayo del presente año.

La cadena de tiendas AM/PM ofrece todas las marcas en la categoría de cerveza, refrescos y cigarros, así como la más amplia variedad de jugos, té y agua.

7-Eleven es la segunda mayor cadena de tiendas en México, sólo después de Oxxo, que suma 6 mil 542 puntos de venta.
