London Fashion Week has come and gone and I must say, the British style was a little different than ours.  I saw a lot of shapeless, bulky, pieces that wouldn’t be practical (or flattering)  for day-to-day wear on normal sized people, and I also saw a lot less color, which I guess makes sense because the Spring in England can be very gloomy and rainy.  Nonetheless, there were an equal amount of standout pieces showing a lot of the same trends that I talked about in the last post from New York.  Okay, enough jibber jabber, here they are: (once again, hold your mouse over the pictures to see the designer)

We’ve reached Day 2 of London Fashion Week! Already the buzz is that the London designers are doing quite well for themselves this season. See for yourselves:

Jasmine di Milo

Jasmine di Milo’s Spring collection was full of contradictions. The cuts said sexy, but the pallet screamed demure. Di Milo is, by some miracle, a little known designer. But given that she consistently delivers solid collections, one hopes she’ll receive a little more recognition. Full Show Here.

Louise Goldin

Louise Goldin established herself as one to watch last season with a punky collection for a more reserved girl. This season featured the same girl with a new outlook on life. She’s suddenly decided to go bleach blonde and wear equally sunny colors. Perhaps she’s contracted Spring fever. Either way, Goldin tackles both categories with aplomb and leads the pack of next-gen British designers. Full Show Here.

Jasper Conran

Jasper Conran seems to favor the Bridal pallete for Spring, judging by the myriad of whites and off-whites he showed. To deviate from this comparison, Conran also showed slinky clubwear numbers sure to be disasters when anyone tries to tackle them in real life. I wish them luck. Full Show Here.

Eley Kishimoto

Eley Kishimoto wants everyone to dress with childlike enthusiasm, and judging my the sudden popularity of 13-year-old fashion blogger Tavi and the near fetishization of well dressed toddlers by street style photographers, we’re ready to listen. Matthew Williamson

Matthew Williamson’s return to London for the season was accompanied by a reversion to more a more youthful approach, judging by the electric colors and bows that look like they could’ve come from a Barbie Dream House. But Williamson didn’t miss a beat when it came to this more energetic aesthetic, and he ultimately proved that no matter the continent he’s capable of strong work. Full Show Here.

Topshop Unique

With an outpost in New York and a growing empire catering to trend-hungry shoppers, Topshop has been an awe-inspiring story in business. Sadly, they’ve somewhat regressed in the level of quality they maintain with their Unique collection. This season was shown with windswept hair and looked filthy enough to make Erin Wasson concerned. This overall failure greatly overshadowed the few successes, but what do they care? They’re too busy counting their millions to worry about how cleanly the models look at their runway show. Oh well. Julien Macdonald

Julien Macdonald played up the now age-old 80’s reference to great effect at his Spring show. Though we’re certainly ready for something other than this indelible decade, it’s hard to deny the allure of Macdonald’s Versace supermodel look, even the 1000th time it’s been done. Full Show Here.

Richard Nicoll

Richard Nicoll’s choice of motifs was certainly interesting (hello Hawaiian shirt print and fringe that’s not exactly Jil Sander), but he made the best of his odd inspirations. Be that as it may, Nicoll’s stronger moments were incidentally the most subdued as well. Maybe clean it up a little, Dick? Full Show Here.

Antonio Berardi

Antonio Berardi, a cult favorite but a well kept secret, has positioned himself as somewhat of a master of sophisticated modern dressing. He’s a fan of bodycon, but he never follows the pack. It’s fitting, then, that he sort of reinvented the perceptions of the genre in his Spring outing. Just when you thought the figure-hugging tube dress could be reinvented no more, Berardi showed smart conceptions of the piece that stand out vastly from their predecessors. Full Show Here.

Saturday 19th September

MARK FAST

Mark Fast kicked off  the show this morning at 9.30am with his Spring/Summer 2010 collection inspired by the film Erin Brockovich, silent films from the 1920s and love! Mark Fast is a 28 year old knitwear designer from Canada who studied at Central Saint Martins for both his BA and MA and graduated in February last year! Mark knits everything by hand on a domestic knitting machine and is inspired by the endless possibilities of lycra yarns! One of the main appeals of Mark Fast for myself is the fact that he is inspired by the past, translating historical costume and style into a contemporary and relevant aesthetic, something which I love…especially the 1940’s to be precise . The collection was based upon the story of an Egyptian queen who lost her power and had to escape the kingdom that betrayed her in the dead of the night. DANIELLE SCUTT

First things first..I heart this collection!! Danielle Scutt who studied at Central Saint Martins says her three inspirations for her Spring/Summer 2010 collection are print, fabrics and cut! The collection consisted of shoulder padded dresses with eye-catching polka dots and heavy black graffiti beneath sheets of sheer organza, metallic leather skirts, full skirted dresses trimmed with pink cheesecloth with a harsh cut-out style up-top, girly bloomers, lace shorts and peachy layers of chiffon!…a definite hot Alice in Wonderland-inspired show, as well as flashes of acid brights and retro prints adorning mini-dresses…i love love love this collection, especially the dress in the second photo! (images taken from http://insideout.topshop.com/blog/)

ELEY KISHIMOTO

Eley Kishimoto was founded in the early 1990’s by Mark Eley and Wakako Kishimoto, the company is primarily known for its print design and colour! Eley Kishimoto established its reputation within the fashion industry through work with design houses such as Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, Alber Elbaz and Jil Sander. In the mid 1990’s the partnership created their first womenswear collection and they are still going strong! There collection this year is inspired by travel people and food, and as you can see from the imges below, this seasons collection is gorgeous. A mix of bold kaleidoscope style prints, epic florals, ginghams and subtle pastels…making up a stunning range!

TOPSHOP UNIQUE

I would be lying if I said I didn’t love Topshop, even thought it is everywhere, you can totally see why! It caters for everybody, follows every trend and also creates its own, its young, cool and current, and best of all its accessable!! I worked at Topshop as a sales advisor while I was at University and left over a month ago due to getting a job on the internet merchandising department at another fashion retailer in Manchester…as much as I needed to move on I do miss working with the clothes and for the Topshop brand itself, I do dream of working for their marketing department Anyways, enough about me…Topshop Unique collection was inspired by surfing, sea and seventies for the Spring/Summer 2010 collection and her signature style is always fun and playful! This season’s collection oozed a laid back beachside vibe…masses of denim and vintage sticker embellishments, tangled knits and oversized baseball jackets! Vibrant graffiti prints covered jumpsuits and vest dresses, sequins embellished classic polo’s, silk dresses with toggles and buckles, oversized clutches with sea inspired charms, tough tailoring, hole punch detailing, rubberized zips and crop tops, bandeaus and high waist knickers….phewww. Monday 21st September

LUELLA

This is one of the shows I have realllly been looking forwards to, even having to have a sneaky look on the internet while I was at work today. Launched for spring/summer 2000 by ex-Vogue journalist Luella Bartley, Luella has been a massive hit with fashionistas ever since due to its  fun but distinctly wearable aesthetic, recent inspirations include Wicker Man and Ghostworld! Luella’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection had a polished, ladylike edge this season taking inspiration from the Sixties with bracelet-sleeve car coats, pufball dresses with velvet polka dots and silk dresses with sweetheart necklines. I love this collection, and can only dream of owning every single piece…one day

JOSH GOOT

Josh Goot works and lives in Sydney, he studied Communication: Media Art and Production at Moriah College in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.Spending time in New York later that year, Josh decided that his interest in media and communication would manifest through fashion design! As a designer he embarked on his self-titled venture in 2004 before his debut collection in 2005. He followed this up with winning the 2005 Tiffany & Co Young Designer of the Year Award! Josh Goot’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection was inspired by abstraction and the human anatomy, with engineered prints, bonded seams, elongated t-shirt dresses, tank tops and short dresses which were high at the front and cut out at the back, as well as 80’s inspired broad shouldered black and white patterned jackets. The 80’s feel followed on into his colour pallete with his acid tones! The whole collection had a massive graphic quality about it, to me each piece kind of echoed a walking piece of pop art!

CHRISTOPHER KANE

Christoper Kane is a Glasgow-born London-based fashion designer who graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2006, his Spring/Summer 2010 collection is the total Kane look – hip, art-school style spliced with serious sex appeal! Versace, who spotted Kane’s talent while he was at college and has since hired him to design a range of accessories, described the collection as “absolutely fantastic. So fresh, and that is exactly what a catwalk show should be.” Green, for whom Kane designs the Topshop range, thought the show “excellent. He’s a very talented boy. Now I’ve got the job of keeping him in check.” The collection’s main theme was blue, pink, or brown and white tablecloth checks which made up pencil skirts with splits, dresses with chiffon panelled bra cups and cutaways over the waist or under the arms. Kane’s tailoring skill was emphasised with nude chiffon bodywork to bring the collection to a higher level of sophistication, as well as high waisted skirts below girlish checked tops with short gathered sleeves !

Tuesday 22nd September

ERDEM

‘A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Erdem Moralioglu spent a year working with Diane von Furstenberg before winning the prestigious Fashion Fringe award in 2005. Celebrated for his unique take on elegant prints and color, he is one of fashion’s rising stars!’ For his Spring/Summer 2010 collection was roughly based on Japanese girls in their twenties, saying “Although, I never really do theme. I always think it should just be like reading the next chapter of the same book.” He created a line of bright coloured floral print dresses with 3D images; the collection included capped sleeves, ruffled tiers and lace detailing! Even Anna Wintour was sat front row!

BASSO AND BROOKE

Basso & Brooke is the label of Bruno Basso and Christopher Brooke… the duo won Fashion Fringe in September 2004 and have been showing independently at LFW from February 2005. The duo’s signature style is playful, subversive and indivudual and the inspiration behind their Spring/Summer 2010 collection was - “Jeff Koons, hyper-reality and Herb Ritts” and their theme was neo-pop!  The collection was full of digital printed tailoring. The collection was full of digital printed tailoring with a strong interest in black and white intended as a counterpoint to all the colour!

And that’s it…my favorite favorite shows and outfits from London Fashion week, lets just hope one day I shall be able to afford to actually buy from these designers!

Carrie Cooper launches the wicked new Beau Coops line in February 2010, and I’m so excited. She has been one of the many faces behind footwear lines such as Alexander McQueen and Eley Kishimoto, and finally has released a solo footwear line of her own that is to die for. The line already being available for pre-order I’m thinking I need her ‘Peep-toe Boot’ in Black:

So last night we headed off to the Old Truman Brewery for the launch of the amazing new bi-annual Freestyle Magazine.  It was immense.  I mean, I may be slightly biased, but really it when it’s hosted from a travelling van with frisbees attached, dispensing beers and unleashing amaze musical genius – what’s not to love?  All that AND a dog called Ozzie.

And I haven’t even started waxing lyrical about the magazine…

First of all – It’s circular. Have you ever seen a circular magazine before? No. Well, I haven’t anyway, which is possibly why I get so overexcited whenever I see it, but also probably because it makes a refreshing change from the standard up-down format and is a genuine work of genius.

Secondly – It comes with a fucking frisbee.  Design Collaborationals with Eley Kishimoto.  In an array of technicolour colours for your pretty eyes.  Every Issue includes a new frisbee, which to me equates to A LOT of frisbees and the chance that I might finally learn how to frisbee without the inevitable ’stuck-in-a-tree’ incident that seems to happen regardless of proximity to trees.

Third – It has a feature on Monkeys. Or Apes.  I’m not clever enough to know the difference.  But anyway, that’s not the point – said feature includes the most intense photos of monkey-faces – just the faces.  On a black background.  At one point when I turned the page, I felt like it was a mirror….of my monkey self.

Oh shit, I can’t describe how immense it is in words;  you just have to go BUY IT.

Eley Kishimoto, is a global British fashion and design company with headquarters in London, UK. Founded in the early 1990’s by Mark Eley and Wakako Kishimoto, the company is primarily known for its print design. The principle commercial activity of the company is womenswear fashion and accessories.

Benoit Pierre Emery

Benoit Pierre Emery (born July 9, 1970) is a French art director and a fashion designer based in Paris, France. A graduate of the Royal College of Art and of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, Benoit Emery began his career as a freelancer, working as an art director for Canal and Louis Vuitton.

Etro

Etro is an Italian fashion house and manufacturer of fabrics, furnishings and fragrances. It was founded in 1968 by Gimmo Etro. It is still a family business, with menswear headed since 1990 by Kean Etro, while his sister, Veronica, directs womenswear. Gimmo’s eldest son, Jacobo, is in charge of the textile division, and brother Ippoliti handles the company finances from its headquarters in Milan.

Faconnable

Façonnable is a French high-end retailer specializing in tailored men’s and women’s clothing. The company started humbly as a small custom tailor shop that Jean Goldberg opened in 1950 on Rue Paradis in Nice, France. By 1958 the small tailor shop was making custom tuxedos for Hollywood stars that were in the Cote d’Azur for the annual Cannes Film Festival. In 1961 Jean Goldberg’s son, Albert, took over the shop and renamed it Façonnable, a variation of the word “Façonner,” which means “to create.” Under his watch the company expanded and in 1973 opens its first boutiques in Monte Carlo, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Lyon, and Marseilles, however it was not until 1984 that Façonnable opened an outlet in Paris.

Fendi

Fendi is an Italian fashion house best known for its “baguette” handbags. It was launched in 1925 as a fur and leather shop in Rome, but today is a multinational luxury goods brand owned by LVMH. Karl Lagerfeld is the creative director.

Fiorucci

Fiorucci is an Italian fashion label founded by Elio Fiorucci in 1967. The first shop exposed Milan to the styles of Swinging London and American classics such as the T-shirt and jeans. By the late 1970s and early 1980s this would be reversed, and the New York store would become famous for the fashions it introduced to the United States. Known as the “daytime Studio 54″, it attracted trendsetters from Andy Warhol to a young Madonna.

Franck Sorbier

Franck Sorbier is a Paris fashion house that achieved haute couture status in 2005. After working successfully for Chantal Thomass and Thierry Mugler, the French fashion designer Franck Sorbier, who was born in 1961, presented his first collection in 1987. Then, some major stores, such as Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus in the United States, Seibu in Japan, noticed him. In 1995, The renowned French jeweller and watchmaker Cartier gave him the opportunity to present his winter 95/96 collection in a prestigious place, the “Carrousel du Louvre”. In 1996, he became a member of the French Federation of Couture and Ready-To-Wear,supported by Jean-Paul Gaultier and Sonia Rykiel. In 1999, Franck Sorbier designed glasses for Vuarnet sunglasses. He presented his first Couture collection this same year.

Frost French

Frost French is a fashion label run by the British movie actress Sadie Frost and Jemima French. Frost French is a UK designing duo. They describe their designs as classical with a twist of pop, Frost French was established in 1999. FrostFrench have being showing in the U.K during London Fashion Week for nearly four years. Autumn/Winter 2007 show marked their 8th season on the runway. They have also appeared on Project Catwalk season 1, episode 3.

Fuchsia (clothing)

Fuchsia is an American fashion company and design house run by Veronica Scott and Lawren Pope, based San Diego, California. Fuchsia specializes in women’s fashion, handbags, and accessories.

Fed up with depressing blogs, a friend challenged me to deliver a crowd-pleaser for the tired, weary-hearted reader. What better way to do this than to bring up the much loved, much hated topic of the female/male obsession with…..shoes.

Any red-blooded female on the planet has an interest in shoes. Despite my current tastes for a well-turned heel, close friends can testify that I was once a highly nerdy about being an avid sneaker collector. Anyone who’s ever read “Where’d You Get Those” by Bobbito Garcia, Nike’s “Sole Provider”, Milk’s publication of “The Sneaker Book” or Neal Heard’s “Trainers” will understand what sort of a chameleon I was. Hand in hand with an ear for Run DMC and De La Soul is a well-turned paw for sneakers of the same era. Other like-minded soldiers of the foot patrol, you’ll agree with me here; ain’t nuthin’ like taking in a deep breath and inhaling all the loveliness of box-fresh sneaks, be they Jordan 1’s, All Stars, Huaraches or ZXZ NYL’s….whatever your palate desires. You get any educated sneaker lover talking about the art of trainer-wear and they will immediately break deliriously into apparently foreign dialogue, about tricks regarding freezers, masking tape, slept on butters–terminology unknown to the untrained ear. Which of course, has completely surpassed a lot of females as I write, so I shall swiftly move on before discombobulation settles in.

In any woman’s wardrobe there is a swamp area below the clothes rail which some men have little or no understanding of it’s purpose to a woman. It is called the shoe closet. Depending on the severity of the condition, this closet can look anything like a shop floor display to a pile of knotted chaos. For the latter I will say, most women in possession of this disarray actually have an uncanny knowledge of EXACTLY where each shoe is. I have, for years, done the opposite and stored everything in labelled boxes. Nice and organised, you say. Ah yes perhaps, but the notorious problem with this, is that you quickly forget what is in these boxes and cycle only 4 pairs of shoes all season round.

So! The ultimate question is this: what is the PERFECT way to store your feet crowns?

I experimented with removing the boxes which was, of course, a short-sighted and silly idea, because of course, after boxing your shoes from the beginning of time, you actually have NO IDEA of how many shoes you actually own….till they’re all out in full horror/grandeur/delete where appropriate. My shoes never made it in as one family, and I own a “modest” 50-odd pairs. Alas, my peepers remain boxed for storage purposes and I’m back to square one. Ideas anyone?!

Since the playground, you’ve been rocked by the Belgium gifted fashion designers of the prestigious Modeacademie of Antwerp, like Martin Margiela & cie…? Rush to Anvers for a plenty day dedicated to fashion culture and shopping. First, go to the Antwerp hottest street, the Nationalestraat, thanks to Dries Van Noten who was the first designer to open a shop there. And visit the MoMu, the famous Fashion Museum of Antwerp, based in the ModeNatie building (an old huge warehouse). The big hall of the museum looks like a German expresionnist movies set. The exhibition: Paper Fashion, till August the 16th. My prefered piece: this Darvadore-origami dress (picture below).

“Place of pilgrimage”: Dries Van Noten’s flagship (I really like!). Cool welcome like in Paris! No comment, fortunately there was one nice seller. For the gossip: a long time ago, Dries Van Noten family used to own warehouses in this area. That’s why he choose to base his flagship in this neighbourhood. Of course Yohji Yamamoto is not a gratuate of the Antwerp ModeAcademie, but his shop is adjacent to the MoMu: so chic, isn’t it! Yohji Yamamoto: Maria-Theresialei 17, 2000 Antwerp 

Definitely you have to stop at Walter, the concept store of the most unclassifiable Belgian fashion designer, Walter Van Beirondonck. Warm welcome in a great place, where you can find the Men and Women collections of Bernard Wilhelm and my Darling Eley Kishimoto and discover the designer of the great “Clay Furniture” serie, Maarten Baas (the second picture below). Now back to the Nationalestraat, stop at those two charming shops. Lila Grace: for trendy bohemian soulfoul women mix hyppie chic with fifties pin-up feminity. Lila Grace: Nationalestraat 83, 2000 Anvers. Access: to make really nice colourful gifts, like lovely candles, refined decoration items and sugar formed from butterfly. On the way to go to the Meir, in a Small street you’ll see in a stylished Grey building, the luxury multibrands Louis, with a really refined selection: Lanvin, Balenciaga, Margiela… Louis: Lombardenstraat 2, 2000 Antwerp

In Meir (picture above): Princess is a huge maze store with a superb dome. Different atmospheres and decorations for each ranges (women, casuel, children). Great volumes. And don’t forget to look at the outfits! Me I’ve simply forgotten! Don’t worry it’s a high range multibrands, with Marc Jacobs… There are many shops, including Princess Blue: with my now crush designer Sophia Kokosalaki (you can find her collection almost everywhere in Antwerp).

If like us, you’ve walked six hours: relax at the Verso Café‘s tables outside. The front of the building reminds me Milan. For: those enjoy Armani Café in Saint Germain des Près, in Paris. The home made hamburgers are impressive (not tasted). And if you don’t get enough of shopping, Verso first is a high range multibrands for men and women (Roberto Cavalli, Giambattista Valli, Kris Van Assche…)! Check this when you will go dowstairs to the very dark toilettes of Verso: there is a thick huge door of an old safe (like in 1920’s) where you can have dinner. If you are claustrophobic, forget it!

At the first sign of spring, bunnies start to emerge. This year’s been no exception, as countless prints and mediums have shared the unifying theme often associated with Easter.  The 2009 trend has appeared to take a refreshing left turn away from the usual pastel cuteness.  As seen in Bergdorf Goodman’s windows last month, sophisticated gilded frames balance loose contour bunny portraits.  Jäniksen Vuosi’s rabbit toss for Marimekko’s Autumn 09/10 collection presents a playful overlay of translucent silhouettes.

Cineplexx Picnic, a photo and design project by Pattern Pulp favorite, Alan the Gallant, collages rabbit profiles for the cover of their European music album.  Combining fantasy photography with real life story telling, Tim Walker’s UK Vouge photoshoot embraces the ideas of fertility, sexuality and femininity with the use of color, layout and subject matter.  Translating these surreal storylines into wearable fashion, Eley Kishimoto creates a dali-esque toss with leaping rabbits frozen in motion.
