You’ve got to hand it to Bill Simmons, aka The Sports Guy.

Even if you’re not a Celtics fan, even if you find him incredibly self-promoting, even if you disagree with every single one of his opinions and even if you tire of his endless references to the Rocky series, you have to admit one basic fact.

The man has made a career of being a sports fan.

A passionate, informed and prolifically writing sports fan, to be sure, and, let’s face it, the man is paid to watch, talk and write about sports.

Plenty of sportswriters do this, too, but Simmons is different to the extent that he is a fan first and foremost.

I’ve got some grounds to make this statement because I spent a lot of time with Simmons this past weekend, thanks to my brother Mike, who gave me The Sports Guy’s newly released tome, The Book of Basketball.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

While I cannot make it to his appearance today here in Chicago, I recommend that others consult his book tour schedule and go in other cities.

In part, my pleasure in reading Simmons stems from the fact that I get to relive cherished parts of my childhood.

We spent large chunks of his youth in Brookline, came of age during the 70s Red Sox and 80s Celtics era, and loved deeply our hometown teams and the endless statistics that came with following sports.

Larry Bird has a permanent place in our Sports Pantheon.

When he writes in The Book of Basketball about a game where Bird waved his arms to a hostile Clippers crowd before shooting game-winning free throws, for example, I remember watching that with best friend Pete D’Angelo.

The intersecting nature of our childhoods aside, I liked The Book of Basketball because it shows Simmons in all his passionate, knowledgeable and at times excessive fullness.

To begin, the book is 700 pages long-a fact that he mentions both in the footnotes toward the end and in the acknowledgments, when he quotes his wife, The Sports Gal, saying, in essence, that she will leave him if he ever proposes to write another book of similar length.

Readers who follow Simmons’ columns will find a lot of recycled material in the book, and there is much that is new.

He has a five-tier Hall of Fame and identifies the 75 players who should occupy those levels. He takes the reader through the league’s history. He has lengthy discussions of the best teams of all time-a list that culminates, unsurprisingly, with the 1986 Boston Celtics.

Readers of Simmons’ previous work will find all the same ingredients: heavy doses of discussions with his father; plenty of self-referential interactions with everyone from Elgin Baylor to Tom Seaver to Bill Walton; lots of popular culture references; pinches of phrases like “Stick a fork in him”; and plenty of lists with criteria attached to them and the people or teams who fit them.

I skimmed certain parts of the history and will say that I read most, but not all, of the footnotes. And, to be sure, the book has its shortcomings.

His jokes and repeated digs at his “Grumpy Old Editor” aside, Simmons really could have written the same book at a little more than half the length. He asserts in several places that you know something is meaningful when you remember where you were when it happened-a proposition that need not be true, and, even if it is, probably does not bear repeating.

His criteria shift, but are argued with equal conviction.

He says that Bill Walton deserves to be on the list of Hall of Famers because of the brilliance he showed for a short time, but later gives Karl Malone the edge over Charles Barkley because Malone fulfilled his lesser potential while Barkley did not play at his highest level for long periods of time.

While Simmons does talk about the size of Dennis Johnson’s ”equipment,” he neglected to include one of my favorite nuggets about DJ that Jim D’Angelo pointed out-that he picked his spots to the point where he did not score at all in the first half, but ended up with 17 points and a number of big steals in the 118-116 1988 Game 7 victory over the Atlanta Hawks that is most known for the Bird-Dominique duel.

But, in many ways, each of these criticisms both are what Simmons wants, an engaged readership, but, more than that, underscores the very point that he is able to write what he wants because it is HIS BOOK.

Near the end of the work, Simmons writes with just a slight tongue in cheek tone that The Book of Basketball is the second-best book about hoops ever. I don’t know about that, but I do know that I am very grateful to my brother for sending me this fantastic birthday present and I am grateful to Simmons for caring and writing about sports as much as he does.

Well it’s that time of year once again, where the round ball game comes into play. The NBA season is now upon us folks and though as far as I’m concerned it doesn’t really get into stride until the season gets into the meat of its schedule -roundabout Christmas. By then, we’ll be seeing how a number of teams will have played themselves into some sort of rhythm. And perhaps not , as the case maybe !

<img src="http://tophatal.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/charles-barkley-sidline-at-an-nba-game.jpg" alt="Former NBA great, turned NBA broadcast analyst , Charles Barkley , seen here courtside at the T-Mobile Rookie Youth Jam part of the 2008 NBA All Star Weekend that took place at the New Orleans Arena , New Orleans, Louisiana,. Barkley recently stated that he'd like to take an executive role as the GM of an NBA franchise. Something that I for one can't necessarily see Barkley doing at this juncture. He's got far too comfortable a position behind the desk at TNT covering the NBA with his usual forthright and deprecating analysis. picture appears courtesy nbae/getty images/ Andrew D.

Former NBA great ,turned TNT NBA broadcast analyst , Charles Barkley seen here at the T-Mobile Rookie Youth Jam, part of the 2008 NBA All Star Weekend that took place at the New Orleans Arena , New Orleans , Louisiana,. Barkley recently stated that he’d like to an executive role as the GM of an NBA franchise. Something that I for one can’t necessarily see Barkley doing at this juncture. He’s got far too comfortable a position behind the desk at TNT covering the NBA with his usual forthright analysis and self deprecating humor. picture appears courtesy of NBAE/Getty Images/ Andrew D.
And for me the coverage of the game can only be enhanced by the spirited banter of former NBA great and Hall of Famer, Charles Barkley. What he brings to the table is honest to goodness forthright analysis , tinged with sometimes his acerbic wit and devil may care attitude. He just puts it out there and tells it like it is. And most of all he doesn’t care who he offends for that matter. Fans of the game either hate him , or they simply love him. There are no in betweens when it comes to ‘Sir Charles’ . The TNT coverage of the game is amongst the very best that there is on offer and that’s inclusive of the NBA’s (NBA Tv) own cable broadcast coverage of the sport.

The season kicks off tonight with a double header feature of games scheduled to start with an eagerly anticipated match-up between the Boston Celtics , who’ll be taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The other game on tap will feature the defending NBA champions , the Los Angeles Lakers , taking on their neighbor, the Los Angeles Clippers . Unfortunately, for fans of the Clippers they will not be afforded the privilege of seeing the NBA #1 draft pick , Blake Griffin. The player injured himself in practice and will be sidelined for anywhere between four to six weeks , by all estimates. It’s hoped that his recovery will be a speedy one and that there’ll be no long lasting or lingering effects from his injury (a cracked patella [broken kneecap]).

Barkley wants his shot at being a general manager

By Brian Mahoney , AP Basketball Writer

NEW YORK (AP)—Charles Barkley thinks he can do better than some of the general managers he criticizes on TV.

The Hall of Fame player and TNT analyst said Monday he’d like his chance to run an NBA team, though he’s in no rush because he’d want the right job.

“I think that it’d be fun to try to build my own team,” Barkley said at a luncheon, joined by studio partners Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson. “We talk about it all the time. Sometimes we say, ‘What is that guy doing? Why did he draft that guy? Why did he make a trade for that guy?’

“Some of these guys have done a bad job, plain and simple.”

Barkley was critical of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who under new team president David Kahn took point guards with the Nos. 5-6 picks in the draft, then signed point guard Ramon Sessions(notes) in free agency. He compared the Wolves’ draft strategy to when the Detroit Lions kept spending high draft picks on wide receivers.

The 46-year-old Barkley planned to do TV for only a couple of years, but is now in his 10th season with TNT. He’s in no hurry to leave for a team executive job that opened up, because some of them wouldn’t give him an opportunity to be successful.

“Every job ain’t a good job,” said Barkley, who said he wouldn’t take any position unless he was given complete control of basketball decisions, because some owners aren’t interested in winning.

Smith also is interested and has interviewed for some positions. He doesn’t think he or Barkley are hurt by not having previous experience working for a team.

“Every day you can hear what we say about your team, what your team is. You know our philosophy. If you follow basketball, it’s not like you don’t know Charles and myself. You can’t not know us and you can’t not know how we think,” Smith said. “We’re just in a unique situation where we’re interviewed every night.”

Barkley has seen some of his contemporaries try and fail as team executives. Isiah Thomas was fired after a horrible tenure running the New York Knicks, and even Michael Jordan, Barkley’s good friend, is regularly criticized for his inability to build a winner in Washington and Charlotte.

It's hoped that the team can rebound from last season's disappointment in the NBA playoffs . picture appears courtesy of nbae/getty images/ D.
Now as an erstwhile fan of the NBA and a fervent supporter of the San Antonio Spurs . I can only hope, that much of Charles’ criticism won’t be directly targeted towards by beloved Spurs. He’s been known to let rip even when it’s not been justified . But such are the wiles of Barkley , that even he can’t be held in check by his bosses at TNT . And that’s no doubt what the vast majority of NBA fans love about him from the get-go.
The thought of Barkley leaving the broadcast booth to be behind the desk dealing with the day to day operations of an NBA franchise. Though on the face it – it may well appear to be ghastly. There’s no reason to believe that he couldn’t prove to be a success in that particular endeavor. Albeit , that we’ve seen the failures of such individuals , as Michael Jordan , Isiah Thomas and Elgin Baylor. All of whom at one time or another were in charge of an NBA franchise as a general manager , head of the player personnel operations. Their failures have been of such monumental proportions . That it left the respective franchises that they oversaw in almost irretrievable situation. So much so, that it has taken them in some cases almost a decade to attain some semblance of normalcy within those respective organizations. So for now for the likes of the Washington Wizards, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers , they can be thankful that a lesson has been sorely learned.

<img src="http://tophatal.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/bryanthoward-james-and-garnett.jpg" alt="From left to right, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, LeBron James and Kevin Garnett . All with their eyes on the NBA’s ultimate prize , an NBA title and ring. Three from this quartet may well end up being disappointed at the final outcome of it all. Which one do you think it will be ? picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Marcus Talbot ………………….

As to the aspirations of a number of teams. One can merely speculate as to the fate that may well await them over the course of the season. Of this though we’re sure , for LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal , this will be a make or break season as to how the Cleveland Cavaliers will fare. Perhaps, no other franchise is under as much pressure as the Cavaliers. And that’s including the Los Angeles Lakers, as the defending NBA champions. O’Neal , was brought in to the franchise, to provide that added leadership and prominent offensive presence. That is what was felt the team was lacking. As to whether or not, O’Neal can regain the form of old , remains to be seen. But this much is sure , failure by the Cavaliers to at least make the NBA Finals and raise the Larry O’Brien Trophy . And Cleveland might as well start to pay homage to LeBron James , as he heads out for pastures new. His remaining with the franchise, is predicated upon them winning the NBA title. Anything short of that, is absolutely meaningless for him and his overall ambitions as a player, at this stage of his career.

History has shown us recently, that it’s hard to successfully defend an NBA title. And for the Lakers it will prove to be no different. With the loss of Trevor Ariza through free agency ,with him landing with the Houston Rockets . Who’d have thought it possible that Ron Artest would’ve ended up in a Lakers’ uniform ? Now the question has got to be , will he be more of an attraction , rather than a distraction ? Granted , his stay with the Rockets proved to be fruitful. Where he played alongside Aaron Brooks , and proved that he’d matured into a leader and a teammate on their roster that was hampered by injuries to Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady – as they made the playoffs last season. Now comes the real task for Artest, can he defer to the likes of Kobe Bryant , Pau Gasol and in all likelihood Andrew Bynum ? He’ll after all be no more than their fourth or fifth scoring option , if that !

Rudy Fernandez (5) of the Portland Trailblazers goes up for the layup as he evades Chuck Hayes (44) , in the game played against the Houston Rockets , in the teams’ season opener played at the Rose Garden Arena , Portland , Oregon. The Trailblazers would go on to defeat the Rockets 96-87 . picture appears courtesy of nbae/getty images/ Thomas Oliver ………………..

And most certainly Lakers’ coach , Phil Jackson ,will be watching diligently, as Artest acclimatizes himself with his new teammates. For the Lakers’ fans also, they’ll be hoping to see their team successfully defend their title. As it is, they merely see the opponents in the Eastern Conference , as nothing more than cannon fodder. Especially in light of the ease with which they dispatched the Orlando Magic last season. However, with the likes of the Boston Celtics, the Magic to name but a few, making acquisitions to bolster their rosters. It will be interesting to see how many of the Eastern Conference’s top teams fare over the course of this upcoming season. The Celtics have added another aging veteran in Rasheed Wallace , to provide them with depth. And the Magic, meanwhile, have added Vince Carter to provide them with some much needed offense. Unfortunately, the loss of Hedo Turkoglu for the Orlando Magic, might prove to be too much to bear. But if anything the Magic’s coach, Stan Van Gundy will be able to make do , with the talent made available to him.

The NBA and in particular the game’s commissioner , David Stern will no doubt be pinning his hopes that the league’s stars will be at the top of their game. And in particular the young rookies that will be taking their first steps on the professional basketball stage. But paramount to this all, will be if there is a far more entertaining product placed on the court this season. In light of the economic turmoil that the country now faces and the fact that the erstwhile NBA fans may not be all too willing to pay overly inflated prices for a product that at times has been about as entertaining as watching an episode of ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8′. Well, you can see why it is that the fans have at times become less approving of the game.

For Charles Barkley and his post broadcast career, I’m of the opinion that I would rather see him behind the desk giving us his succinct observations on the game . Or him court-side having a great deal of fun at the expense of the players, coaches and fans. Barkley being an NBA General Manager ? Let’s just say that on the face of it , the tone and reverence sought just wouldn’t be there. Could you imagine Charles and a player , much less a coach having a spat over the the productivity on the basketball court ? You know one way or another that there would definitely be hell to pay . And there’s no telling what may well happen between him and his antagonist. Suffice to say, the aftermath of it all wouldn’t be pretty !

— Primeiro vem Michael Jordan.

Isso me constrange um pouco. Eu nunca joguei contra Jerry West, eu nunca joguei contra Elgin Baylor, eu nunca joguei contra Wilt Chamberlain — enumerou Jordan, segundo o The New York Times.

It was the epic event of our times! Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, was lovingly memorialized at the Los Angeles Staples Center and your HW Design Inc. team was there!

The place where legendary demigods like Ervin “Magic” Johnson, Oscar De La Hoya, Jerry West, Wayne Gretzky, Chick Hearn and Elgin Baylor just to name a few, whose immortalized images line the entrance to the Star Plaza V.I.P section, like silent sentinels awaiting the arrival of one even greater than themselves. People from every walk of life, every race, every ethnicity have come from all over the globe to pay homage to their King. The air is filled with love, reverence and hopeful anticipation of saying goodbye one last time, to the man who touched the world with his extraordinary talents. The throng of people were unusually orderly and extra polite as if, everyone there was connected by some magical cord. This man has made a cultural impact on the world that will never be replicated in this era!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-606" title="Neverland (20 of 97)" src="http://hwdesigninc.wordpress.com/files/2009/07/neverland-20-of-97.jpg?w=300" alt="HW Design Inc.
Throughout the service the emotions ran high, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Regardless of all the controversy that surrounded his life, you would have had to be void of the bases’ form of humanity to not have been touched by the sentiments of those that knew him in a personal way! The speakers both comforted and invigorated us with new revelations of the personal experiences they shared with him, from Ervin “Magic” Johnson and Kobe Bryant, to Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, Martin Luther King III, Bernice King, Brooke Shields, the Reverend Al Sharpton, Queen Latifah and U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas). Inspiration filled the air like the fragrant smoke of an incense sweetened Cathedral.

Those that paid tribute to him in song were the crème de la crème of the music industry. From the legendary gospel impresario’s Andre and Sandra Crouch who sang his enduring, “Soon and Very Soon We are Going to See The King”, to Song-Bird Mariah Carey singing Michaels’, “I’ll Be There” joined by her longtime friend, Trey Lorenz. The great Stevie Wonder displayed masterful musicianship and classic vocals on his song’s “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer” and “They Won’t Go When I Go”, and Jermaine Jackson sang a stirring rendition of “Smile”. John Mayer’s soulful and skillful instrumental interpretation of “Human Nature” was a high note, and Jennifer Hudson soared on “Will You be There” as she was surrounded by Michael’s dancers that performed with him throughout the years. Lionel Richie, collaborator with Michael on “We are the World” and a prolific songwriter and artist in his own right, moved us all with his classic song “Jesus is Love”, Usher delivered an incredible tear jerking rendition of MJ’s “Gone to Soon”, and “Britain’s Got Talent” star Shaheen Jafargholi, gave his exceptional take on “Who’s Loving You.”

<img class="size-medium wp-image-607" title="MJ Programs Wristband Ticket (1 of 1)" src="http://hwdesigninc.wordpress.com/files/2009/07/mj-programs-wristband-ticket-1-of-1.jpg?w=300" alt="Exclusive Tickets, Wristband and Programs For Michael Jackson's Memorial At Staples Center.
However, all the brilliance of these exceptional artist’s star power was purposefully turned on dim to allow the King of Pop’s final tribute to be a stellar moment for him. But the most moving moment of the entire memorial service was at the end, when Michael’s 10 year old daughter, Paris Jackson, joined by her two brothers, Prince Michael and Prince Michael II aka “Blanket”, as well as, most of the Jackson siblings and the other participants sang “We Are The World.” And she then delivered a touching tribute to her father.

All together the Michael Jackson Memorial service will be an event not easily forgotten. We here, at HW Design Inc. offer our prayers and sincerest condolences to the entire Jackson Family and to all of his fans around the world.

Michael, May You Rest In Peace!

It’s important to point out that this list was made earlier this season, thus any of the active players(kobe kobe kobe) may have moved up or down in the minds of the writers!!!

1) Michael Jordan
2) Wilt Chamberlain
3) Bill Russell
4) Shaquille O’Neal
5) Oscar Robertson
6) Magic Johnson
7) Kareem Abdul Jabbar
8. Tim Duncan
9) Larry Bird
10) Jerry West
11) Elgin Baylor
12) Kobe Bryant
13) Hakeem Olajuwon
14) Bob Pettit
15) Julius Erving
16) Moses Malone
17) John Havlicek
18) Karl Malone
19) Isiah Thomas
20) Charles Barkley
21) Rick Barry
22) John Stockton
23) Elvin Hayes
24) Bob Cousy
25) David Robinson
26) Kevin McHale
27) Scottie Pippen
28) Jason Kidd
29) George Mikan
30) Kevin Garnett
31) Willis Reed
32) Wes Unseld
33) Nate Thurmond
34) Dolph Schayes
35) Walt Frazier
36) Patrick Ewing
37) Jerry Lucas
38) Gary Payton
39) Allen Iverson
40) Billy Cunningham
41) Clyde Drexler
42) LeBron James
43) Dominique Wilkins
44) Dave Cowens
45) George Gervin
46) Bob McAdoo
47) Earl Monroe
48) Dennis Rodman
49) Walt Bellamy
50) Steve Nash

My question is why didn’t they wait until the season was over? Kobe, based on the fact that he added another championship and got his first finals MVP, probably would jump at least a couple of spots! and at the beginning of the article the writer states that with active players they act as if they were to retire tomarrow, where would they stand. How can they even justify Lebron being in the top 50? he’s one of the top 50 most talented, and has the potential to be at or near the top of this list when all is said and done, but based on the criteria, WTF?

I was doing well in the market until the 5 year auction yawned. The stock market was up a couple of percent in the morning, took a big hit after the auction, than rallied strong at the close. The market did a better head fake than this guy. Grains puked and my gold/platinum spread lost some money. All in all, today was a forgettable day. Today’s trading was marred by a distinct lack of concentration, general weariness, and not keeping my eye on the ball. Although I had some excellent trades this morning, the afternoon killed me.

I spoke to the person who’s been editing my book, and she had a lot of criticism with my style. I’ve rewritten it a couple of times, and will take one more look at it. If it meets my satisfaction, I’ll put it out there.

John has been very recalcitrant, and has been downright ornery towards me. He’s been in a foul mood, and I have chosen to ignore it as I’m not willing to engage in a power struggle. He did send me a picture of him that was taken last night. He seems to be happy with his friends, so I’m not worried about any clinical depression issues or anything like that.

I’m confident that John’s antipathy towards me will pass in a while. He’s generally the happiest person I’ve ever met, and this is coming from me, who is a pretty happy person.

I need to get over my writer’s block and write something over at Daily Speculations. I don’t think I’ve written anything over there in a month.

I have some travel plans next week and will be out of pocket for awhile……maybe a long while.

Here’s a couple of pictures of my beach from my hard drive. I’ve been scouring my hard drives and trying to get all my photos organized.

ESPN Reports that: Elgin Baylor (former Los Angeles Clippers General Manager) has sued the franchise, the NBA and Donald Sterling (Team Owner) alleging employment discrimination following his dismissal last year, after 22 years with the team.

The lawsuit maintains that Baylor was “discriminated against and unceremoniously released from his position with the team on account of his age and his race” and that he was “grossly underpaid during his tenure with the Clippers, never earning more than $350,000 per year, when compared with the compensation scheme for general managers employed by every other team in the NBA.”

The Clippers attorney said that he could not comment on the specific allegations as he had not seen them, but he added that Baylor had never made any of these claims of unfair treatment before his departure.

In our recent trip to Disney World, in between rides on Space Mountain and Star Tours, The Sport Count team took some time out to suck down a milk shake and burger. Just as we sat down, guess who was leaving, but our favourite malcontent, Jameer Nelson – who unfortunately left his classy looking Moleskin diary on the chair next to us.
Intrigued, by what the little fella might’ve had to say, the Count delved into the pages and found some interesting findings…

"Yep - the best injury of the 2004 draft for sure."

8:00am – Damn, this is sore. This is probably the worst injury to happen to anyone in the NBA this year – Al Jeff, Bynum, all pale into comparison to my shoulder. I was the only allstar with a season ender – we should remember that, when the dust settles on the 2004 NBA Draft.

10:00am - Hit Youtube, check out my injury. Definitely a big time injury. Seriously, ain’t nobody got more injured than this in the 2004 Draft Class and I was selected 20th. I bet all those GM’s are regretting not drafting a player to can carry an injury like your boy Jameer – ‘cept maybe Elgin Baylor… cos Livingston was pretty fucked up.

11:00am – Change my internet homepage; no point in all star voting anymore

13:00pm – Hit Yahoo! Fantasy – do you know I’ve been dropped by 8,994 teams? That means that 8,994 fantasy owners are mad cos I went down. I was the 12 ranked fantasy player of the season, in the ENTIRE NBA! That’s higher than anyone in the 2004 Draft Class by a long way, even Dwight.

14:00pm – Have a sleep. What a sleep.

17:00pm – Check the blackberry; google alerts are rolling in. Kirk Snyder huh? Oh you’re doing well – after your 16th selection you’re now playing in China. I bet the Jazz are really pumped with that pick. Oh, another one – Kris Humphries… those 3.9 ppg must have the Raptors salivating about his “upside”… ha ha, suckers. Damn chumps, I’m the best from 2004!!

19:00pm - Roll out for dinner with Dwight and Hedo and a Turkish place that Hedo knows. Dwight orders 2 platters, so I order 3. I ate 33% more than Dwight Howard at dinner! That’s right, you heard me! Proving once and for all who the best eater in the 2004 NBA Draft Class is.

22:00pm – Jump into bed. This shoulder is killing me – what an injury: they don’t make em like this no more!

Not surprisingly, Suleman is now seeking online donations. I hope some of that money will go to reconstructive surgery on that hideous stomach.

* Elgin Baylor, a man who ran one of the worst NBA franchises for 22 years, is suing his former team, alleging “employment discrimination.” Yeah. I’m sure Matt Millen’s going to sue for the same reason. Mr. Baylor, your team was a laughingstock for two decades because of your godawful management. Unless the Clippers’ owner was discriminating against employees who have a shred of talent by keeping you in charge, you have no case.

* Your ability to empathize may be a function of your genes. My genes make me impervious to human feelings.

* Continuing yesterday’s Muppet theme, we’ve got a cool behind-the-scenes story about “Sesame Street.” (Choice morsel: the two main songwriters were bitter rivals and one guy seethed with envy when the other guy’s “Rubber Duckie” hit the Top 20.)

* Yesterday, radio lunatic Jonathon Brandmeier was talking about the story of how Chicago is the third most miserable city in the U.S. Rather than read it himself, he just played a clip of Zoraida reading the story during my show. And then Z called up the show to chat. Brandmeier played out-of-context clips from other news stories and Z placed the blame on me. Then they discussed how the picture of me passed out on the keyboard (the same one atop this blog) is detrimental to my dating life. I’m working on posting an mp3 clip for your listening pleasure. It’s nice to know my achingly empty life is fuel for the morning radio shows of Chicago.

In case you’re wondering why that picture made the cut, Web Czar Marcus told me he wanted a bunch of pictures of me, unshaven, slumped over my desk as if too tired to function. We shot several and that one stood out to him. The rest is history.

As the blog shifts over to the mothership, the old graphics will likely go away. Enjoy them while you can.

* Speaking of the overhaul, I’ve been asked to consider a new blog name. I’ve come up with three contenders: Deadline (since I face those every day), Red Alert (on account of my hair) and Killer B (a play on my initials). Your thoughts?

ELGIN BAYLOR You’d think that after almost a quarter of a century of undeservedly sucking off

ELGIN BAYLOR

You’d think that after almost a quarter of a century of undeservedly sucking off the NBA teet that Elgin Baylor would be too ashamed to take any more money for being the worst GM in the league’s history. You would be wrong.

The former Los Angeles Clippers general manager is hilariously suing the franchise and the NBA alleging age and racial discrimination. Baylor kept a front office job with the Clippers for 22 years despite being an incompetent fool who made the team a perennial doormat for three different decades until he was fired last October.

At the time of his firing, it was reported that Baylor was let go, in part, to trim his $1 million salary. Not so, says the NBA Hall-of-Famer and former Los Angeles Lakers star. Baylor says in his lawsuit that he never made more than $350,000 a season during his entire tenure with the Clippers. If true, that’s a stunning revelation and a monument to Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s cheapness.

Currently the NBA’s MINIMUM players salary is $442,112. Baylor wasn’t even making that as the president and general manager of the team after 22 years of loyal (albeit incompetent) service! Maybe the guy DOES deserve to win a lawsuit. On the other hand, he was basically stealing a paycheck while he was with the Clippers and really didn’t make one solid decision in 22 years.

All of this poses a difficult question for any potential juror in Los Angeles who may be asked to decide this lawsuit. Do agree with Baylor in his obviously baseless claim (the “racist” NBA has actually had an African-American coach ALL 30 of its clubs at one point and has had more black front office officials than all other sports combined) or can you actually get 12 jurors to side with noted sex fiend and child and homeless exploiter Donald Sterling?

Now THAT’s a dilemma.
