so i’m up crazy early (for me) in the hope of getting some lcd soundsystem tickets, and of course to kill time i’m snooping around the innanet. just killing time, as you do. lo and behold i find the latest instalment in the delectable white light series. boom. just what you need to perk you up on a drab january morning.

this time it’s dubsided a&r mr neoteric, taking the reins for his third contribution to the series. from the looks of things, this one won’t disappoint. kicking off with aeroplane’s remake of st etienne’s simply gorgeous only love can break your heart, it can’t go wrong. i’m also noticing a remix of da hardy boyz, some new shazam and of course, you can’t go wrong with some eli escobar.

“It’s been amazing to see this series blossom into what it has become! My last White Light mix (Vol 5) was one of my favourite mixes that I’ve ever done, but I wanted to go deeper on this one to really catch the ‘Night Driving / Zone Out’ vibe. This one is much less vocal, way more mind trip, and features some very strong productions from acts who are really pushing this sound. This is pretty heady, moody stuff, and the vocals that were picked resonate strongly with emotion. I hope this mix strikes a nerve and is the cosmic soundtrack along your ways. Look towards the light!”

In case you haven’t heard, there has been a resurgence of two types of music as of late in the

In case you haven’t heard, there has been a resurgence of two types of music as of late in the electronica/club scene, and no, i am not talking about dubstep. Both house and disco have risen from the speaker death they experienced when trance, techno, electro, and UK garage/grime/dubstep/niche took over. There have been several incarnations of house in recent years, including “fidget house,” which Crookers and Congorock made famous, in addition to the equally party-friendly tech-house, made popular by folks like Jesse Rose and Riva Starr. Yet another sound that pre-dates the electronica scene is disco, and it’s been given an entirely new face for the contemporary clubgoer/music listener.

What I like to call “Disco Nuevo” has been floating around the music scene in creamy mixes from the likes of several Canadian DJs including Matty C and DJ Neoteric, and Belgium’s Aeroplane, all of whom have taken the 70’s favorite genre and turned into something more fitting for the present. While some of the old disco elements are still there, like the heavy bass, tinges of gospel, and sassy vocals, the general sound is smoother, more finessed and has light infusions of house and soft rock that provide music that’s good for lounging or dancing, if one sees fit.

Bearing in mind that it’s only Tuesday, I felt like these mixes would be more appropriate for easing you into the week, without overwhelming the senses. These mixes are from the White Light Mix Series, which is a compilation of disco nuevo mixes by a set of talented DJs you may already know and love. Hopefully you all will appreciate these as much as I do. I have chosen some of the standouts of the bunch, but they are all honestly worth a listen, and a dance or two. Enjoy (to download, right click the link and ”save target as”):

so, since i promised, here is the first half of my non-arbitrary list of songs that meant a lot to me over the past year.

The Juan MacLean – The Station

the future will come was my favourite album of the year, and for a time tonight was my favourite track thereon. the station edged forward for a number of reasons. its lyrics, all about the lack of communication between a man and woman, resonated with personal fears about my own perceived lack of communcation skills and the way i approach my own relationship. unlike some reviewers, i thought the dynamic between juan’s cold, robotic utterings and nancy whang’s passionate, driven vocals lent the album, and this song in particular, a pathos so often lacking in modern music. this song also holds a special place in my heart as it was the first track i ever played at transmission back in august, something which has come to define the year for me.

Stevie Nicks – Stand Back (Eli Escobar Disco Mix)

the next song i played in that first set back in august was this delightful re-edit of a stevie nicks song done for money lotion by one eli escobar. the isolated strands of guitar licks, the fuzzy synths, the completeness of it all – it’s one of few songs out there that you can listen to, on repeat, for a whole seven minutes and never get bored – everything about this track is respectful to its forebear without being stuck in the past. of course, it is an 80s song, but it fits in perfectly with that resurgent strand of, for want of a better genre-title, nu-disco. but we must bear in mind that it wasn’t just re-edits that eli did this year…

Eli Escobar – Glass House

yes, i’m talking about him yet again. more than anyone else, his work has had a profound effect on me this year. his remixes have been wowing be for a few years, but finally he came out with some original tracks – the dark, relentless groove of glass house contrasted greatly with the euphoric party vibes of good time – both are superb but it’s the title track that edges it for me. the 80s percussion, the heavily-reverbed claps, the brooding bassline, it sounds like a nightmare but it’s more like a dream. compounded with this insane video, it was no doubt one of the most epic releases of 2009.

Joe and Will Ask? – Fabric of Win (ft SaintSaviour)

having met these guys in preston back in may, i’ve been keen to promote and celebrate their work. their latest effort, dewdrops with kris menace, calls to mind binary finary – and joe knows that i only mean that in a good way – but it was fabric of win, with the vocals of saintsaviour, that helped define the latter half of my year. for four months in a row at transmission it found its way into my sets. as joe said of saintsaviour before the track’s release, “she’s an awesome dance music writer, she does it in a kind of cool, edgy way, it’s not bland or boring, like ‘let’s just stick a blonde babe singing something about the weekend’.” this track had the signature beats of a joe and will ask? tune, but bypassed their harder techno sound for a more approachable, housey sound. either way, the boys look like they’ll be around for some time if this is anything to go by.

Curses! – The Deep End (Holy Ghost! Day School Dub ft Nancy Whang)

to be honest, i know i first heard this in early december 2008. that doesn’t matter – it was released in 09. win! it’s kind of hard to be objective on this one. there’s something so deeply moving about all of the different elements of this track – the whining synth, the pummelling bassline, the evocative piano chords, that theme which is essentially just a distorted bass riff – it’s the saddest club track ever written. probably why i’ve never played it out. i remember hearing it played between bands at now wave in manchester when i was waiting for the juan maclean, and i texted a friend saying “have you heard this track? because if you haven’t you should”. i was listening to andrew weatherall’s 6 mix back in may and, as usual, looked at the tracklisting to see if i recognised anything – i didn’t. so it was to my great delight to hear this familiar beat kick in half-way through the mix. of course, “Deep End – Unknown” hadn’t caught my attention wevvers used all eight minutes of this beautiful track in his half-hour mix, a fitting tribute to a song that requires attention from the first second to the last.

it’s chrrrriiiiiiiiiistmas… all over the world tonight. this is a weird one. my internet

it’s chrrrriiiiiiiiiistmas… all over the world tonight. this is a weird one. my internet – for whatever reason – is acting up like crazy, dragging out facebook chats, making downloads interminable, and generally being rather douche-like. so i’ve nothing new to upload for you. to be even a little bit festive, i’ve got what i think is quite a nice mix to bop to over this holiday period. it’s something i put together a while ago, i think it’s due a cd pressing, and will at some stage be given out at transmission. for now, you can download away to your heart’s content.

i wanted to make something that would both represent what the club is about, and give a flavour of what i like myself. so while the bulk of the mix is comprised of tracks from 2008, it’s peppered with classics from years gone by. i also wanted to include at least on irish act (big up schizofonics) and focus on people who have played at transmission before. eli escobar’s glass house and joe and will ask?’s fabric of win are two of my favourite tunes from this year, and at the other end of the spectrum tracks from dj rasoul and plastikman hopefully show that i’m not completely without roots.

it’s in split tracks, so you can shove it on your ipod and not have to worry about haido scrobbling too much, you can lash it on a cd and bump it in your car. do it.

Delancey Music Service Show Nov. 30th

There is a slew of podcast & radio shows out there… but this one holds a spot in my heart. Back in the early-90’s I would spend about 4 weeks of summer in New York. The highlight of that time was hearing DJs on the radio. There was Funkmaster Flex and Evil Dee on Hot 97 and then there was a more obscure show that didn’t make as much sense to my little brain… Stretch and Bobbito. You can actually skim archives of the old shows here.

Well, Stretch is still very active in music, heading up Plant Music as well as a new show on East Village Radio with Eli Escobar (who I used to enjoy listening to when he would fill in for Mark Ronson’s show). He also happens to be a stellar producer/ dj. The selection fits perfect with the Solid Bump sound and we were thrilled that Stretch dropped a White Girl Lust joint in the set last week.

Highly recommended listening – stream it here…

hmm… well this is great. i’ve been raving about the delancey music service lately, you know, eli escobar and stretch armstrong playing good tunes and interviewing cool people and being generally interesting and hilarious. the show is on mondays at 10pm ny time, which is generally 3am here. like i can stay up till 5am listening to ny radio, even if it is broadcast online. well in the spirit of honesty, i did stay up last week, as our clocks had gone back but theirs hadn’t, so it was only staying up till 4. but i can’t do that every week…

anyway, thankfully, eli’s been good enough to put up a link to the show on his blog the past few weeks, so i (and the rest of the world) can listen to it on my ipod on buses and when walking through town and whatnot. till now.

So the people over at EVR have asked me not to post up the shows. If you guys wanna hear old shows you’ll have to stream them off the EVR website. If someone calls you on the phone or your Chinese takeout comes, don’t pause the stream because it’ll start from the beginning again when you press play.

thanks evr. whatever about anything else, i definitely don’t have the time to listen to the same stream for two hours straight on my internet. i barely even watch films anymore. this is adding to what has so far been a crap monday. eugh.

where the hell have you been?!

my first glimspe of the o2. it did fill up.

so i went to spandau ballet in the o2. tony hadley dedicated true to stephen gately (rip). the whole crowd sang along (as much because it’s the band’s most famous song as anything else) and what was amazing was that i could still hear the band properly. maybe that was because i was two rows from the back, but anyway, i was still impressed.

Rui Da Silva – Touch Me (Samples Spandau Ballet’s Chant No. 1)

friday night i hit the button factory for the ed banger night – i was hoping so me would be kind of kooky and weird, but he wasn’t that far outside of the ed banger mould. breakbot played some cool tunes, as did busy p. unfortunately i had to leave a little bit early so missed most of feadz’s set, though what i did hear was excellent as usual – such as a bmore version of the tetris theme (!) and bangalter’s outrun.

the following night i paid a visit to oktoberfest at chq, which was, in a word, surreal. there was a big hall, there were lots of benches and long tables, and a LOT of paulaner. that much i expected. i didn’t expect the chant/refrain of german nonsense, or hearing cotton eye joe, macarena and lots of dj otzi.

what was less surreal was jokers of the scene at colortv in wax. that was just great. except for the “random” body search on the way in – i’m thinking of getting this tee in protest. but that aside, it was awesome. the boys played a fantastic set – it was full of excellent techno, most of which i didn’t recognise, but it was expertly peppered with some of their own productions and remixes. it would have been easy for them to close on the unstoppable baggy bottom boys but they just kept on going. excellent stuff.

not the best photo ever taken of jokers of the scene

so today and yesterday i took it easy. i watched some generation kill, some peep show, and finally finished watching let the right one in. i liked it, less than the book (as is generally the case), but i thought it was an interesting and faithful, if hugely condensed, adaptation. i thought the book was exceptional in its detail, while the film was impressive by virtue of its use of vague suggestion and implication – brush strokes rather than minute detail.

this weekend i’m looking forward to the juan maclean, in flagranti and the field at tripod, and then i’m supporting mustard pimp on saturday at transmission. i’d love to be hitting some of the deaf nights, but alas i’m working almost every day so i don’t want to spread myself too thin! i did this weekend and it’s tough going. i’m getting old…

final word – check out the delancey music service on east village radio tonight – or later in the week on eli’s blog. last week he and stretch played some wicked tunes, as well as interviewing amanda blank. get on it.

you know i’m always you going on about eli. along with the awesome tracks, killer remixes and flawless mixes, he can also be a funny dude, as evidenced whenever he stands in for mark ronson’s authentic shit on east village radio. so it’s with great pleasure that i read of his new venture, a weekly show on evr with one stretch armstrong. wow. this is so good. eli played on the station t’other day, peep this sweet tracklist – among some other gems there’s a preview of eli’s remix of phoenix. i just can’t wait to hear the bant between him an stretch!

So I’m pretty excited to announce that starting next Tuesday night, Stretch Armstrong and I will have our own show on EVR every week. Details are still being sorted out but what I can tell you is it will be a mixed format show with plenty of new and, of course, old music, guests and perhaps some sardonic New York City banter thrown in for good measure. In any event, yesterday I played a set on the station’s show “On The Fly” . You can stream it here. Unfortunately EVR has changed its website a bit and downloading shows is no longer an option. Once Stretch and I get started with our show I will put up the podcast address which is the ideal way to archive EVR shows. Stay tuned!

summer’s only been over for a week and I already can’t wait until June. perhaps if we keep playing dance beats, we wont notice the cold? doubtful. regardless, i’m posting on eli escobar because he’s a good dj / producer who’s been quietly putting out quality edits for a while now. a new york native, he’s a lifelong fan of hip hop, RnB, disco, and pretty much whatever else, and he specializes in turning genre classics into club bangers. maybe his basslines will keep us warm for a bit longer? hmmm

i’ve assembled a shortlist of eli escobar favorites below. his mix of Acidlife by Nacho Lovers was all over the ‘best of 2008′ lists last year, but my favorite is his edit of Shoulda Let You Go. if youre interested in reading more about escobar, check out this interview, or go to his blog Outside Broadcast. also, don’t forget to watch the video for his new single Glass House. its epic.

i seem to love everything that’s coming out on solid bump right now, so this mix is looking pretty good to my eyes. white girl lust, whose blood was one of my favourite tracks this summer, has just posted a live mix over on the SB blog. this live mix has a nice balance of brand new stuff from the likes of laberge and eli as well as a few classics from suzy q and depeche mode. there’s even a mini joey negro re-edit section – not mad at all. check it out here.

Last week I stopped by Triple Crown to drop a DJ set at the new night Studio SF hosted by LOW SF & Go Bang. It was a awesome party. People got their soul clap on during “Chicago”, sang along to “aNYway”, and served up shots to the DJ. What more do you want?

This one reminds me so much of those days when I explored MTV for the first time. It’s been a good summer in 1990, but while fellows would kick it outdoors, I’d sit in my cousin’s living room and bump MTV day n nite, rubbing my eyes in total disbelief of all the flashy audiovisual dopeness that would rain down on my 11 year old brain via satellite TV. Next thing I know is running out to the recordsto’ to cop 7″s of Paula Abdul, EMF, Bell Biv Devoe, Guru Josh, Digital Underground, Depeche Mode, Sir Mix-a-lot, KMFDM, Technotronic, Guns N Roses, KLF and such. One of the goodies in my bag was this joint by Bedfordshire-based one (two?) hit wonder vocal house trio named The Adventures of Stevie V.

Still lovin’ the hook, still lovin’ the sax. If it wasn’t for NYC’s Eli Escobar re-editing this fab relict of a vintage MTV era banger, I swear I woulda forgotten.
