Today my mother in law got to see how physical therapy goes. Daycare had a meetings day today and since she had the day off she watched Eli, and then went to PT with us, “just to see what it was like” I tried to warn her, and she thought I was kidding, but after five minutes of refusing toys from his therapists (She has never seen him turn down a toy as long as he’s been alive) Her eyes were wide as saucers. Today she saw a very different side of my child… The devilish side. People look at my kid; how sweet he is, how happy, and they think I’m crazy when I tell him that he kicks, screams, and cries from the time he’s sat down on the mat at physical therapy to shortly after I pick him up and we walk out the door. My child is a very stubborn child. He will eventually do what the therapists ask him to do, but not before making it quite clear he’s not happy about it. That is the way the last three or four weeks have gone. Even at home he plays with us for a little while, lets us stretch him out for a few moments and then realizes what we are doing and will have nothing of it. I feel horrible about it but they are very cool and understanding. I even had a stranger outside the therapy room comment, ” He’s finally happy” Probably lucky she could have been Eli’s great grandmother or there might have been trouble. Nevertheless, even with the fight that Eli puts up, we are noticing a great difference in Eli’s movements and flexibility. For the parents that might have to work with your child in a physical therapy environment know that while it sucks to listen/watch your kid flail, cry, blow snot bubbles out his nose, scream till he is horse it will eventually get better and even if you have to “make” your child work, they will end up better for it. Improvement can be slow sometimes but patience and persistence is the best way to go. Acousticophobics might not like the therapy wing on Friday afternoons, but I believe that while unhappy, my kid is getting better and training his muscles to work the right way. Until next time, keep on keeping on.

Inmates of the Northern Sector Reformatory were not allowed access to the news. If you were deemed dangerous enough to be in that particular Personal Reform Center you were considered removed from society entirely. Although everyone had a way around that particular rule. Some would have friends tie notes to trained messanger rats. Some would have friends use signal systems using lights and smoke. Eli Waters had a better way. Eli’s friends did everything different. They figured it was their birthrite. Eli would have a very special friend read the news papers and transmit his vision into Eli’s dreams. It was a great system for the most part, but Eli hated waiting for Manny to turn the pages.

Last night’s dreams had been particularly interesting.

About my last post…where we made all sorts of pumpkin delights in Gourmet cooking? At first, everybody was saying, “Oh, yeah, this looks so good!” And afterwards we were all groaning because it was SO much pumpkin and SO much sugar. Almost no one finished their plate. But a lot of people got hyper. I started laughing and I couldn’t stop, and another girl at my table complained that she was dizzy. Eli, a boy in my group, said, “Try spinning around slowly” as a joke. But Sreevidya didn’t know he was joking and did it anyway. Funny! And Eli was the Dishwasher and I dried the dishes. He filled the empty cups with water and stuck utensils in them and gave them to me to dry, saying, “Here’s your martinis. Oh wait, did you order the cherry martini?” I nodded, playing along. He filled a cup with “pumpkin water” (because the dishes had been washed in the tub and turned orange) and put a fork or two in their and handed it to me. “Here you go!” And I just started to crack up, mostly because I was hyper, and partly because he wasn’t this hyper normally either. It doesn’t sound very funny here, but it was there, mostly because I was hyper.

Today I’m going to attempt to make Iced Pumpkin Cookies for a Thanksgiving celebration tomorrow. I’m going to my grandparents’ house with a bunch of other relatives and we’ll play and eat and have lots of fun.

ibby out!

One thing we were shocked the most about is the lack of good and cheap grocery stores around NYC. My most expensive cereal I had ever purchased in life was a smaller than normal Raison Bran for $5.79. There are your normal food emporiums everywhere, there are just three around where we live: 86th and 2nd, 82nd and 3rd, and 87th and Madison. For the price you pay, you would think the veggies and plum tomatos would be in top quality. Not so much. Another high end place that does have really good quality everything ranges from fresh seafood to gourmet cheese to crazy deli and olive bar is Eli Market, 80th and 3rd, it is more expensive than food emporium, but you definitely get what you pay for. One additional thing about Food Emporwhicium is that they do free delivery for $75 or over, which we don’t really prefer. We want to be able to pick our own vegetables, herbs and such.

There are two other markets we found, one is on 92nd and 2nd and another one is on 89th and 1st. The one on 92nd and 2nd is a little cheaper and ghetto-fied. After we found 89th and 1st, we no longer go to 92nd and 2nd. 89ths and 1st I believe is a tini-tiny cheaper than food emporium (that does not say much), but still have decent fresh vegetables, deli, and meats and seafood. Most of the meat and seafood are packaged. The market is smaller and does not have a big selection of everything but decent enough that you can get most of everything.

Another recommendation I have is to purchase vegetables and fruits on the stands at various corners, they are actually very cheap and fresh. To name a few, there is one on 89th and Lexington, 88th or 87th and Lexington (in front of the CVS), 86th and 3rd by Banana Republic, and 90th and 3rd in front of the post office. Just to give you a quick example, I got my lemons at 89th and 1st for 2 for $1, while at food emporium, you pay $1 for one lemon, and at the food stands, you get 3 or 4 for $1.

The cheapest and freshest place to buy grocery is really in Chinatown (well at least for Manhattan). YOu do have to go all the way down to Canal St. Another example, I got some jumbo shrimp for $8.99/lb, while in Chinatown, i saw the same thing for $4.99, almost half of what you pay for on the upper east side! If you do go there for dim sum one of these mornings, hold off your grocery shopping till you go to Chinatown and get some of the fresh vegetables, fruits and seafood down there.

I also went to a butcher shop on 87th and Madison across the street from the food emporium. Unless you want to spend $24.99/lb on veal, dont go there. I am not doubting at all how fresh the meat is (because they looked very clean and tasted delicious), but just the price alone can stop you going there.

I was reading through the beginning of 1 Samuel with a friend yesterday, and I was amazed by how app

I was reading through the beginning of 1 Samuel with a friend yesterday, and I was amazed by how applicable these stories could be if I just meditated on them for a while. There’s the inspiration of the surrendering Hannah in chapter 1, who took joy in giving her child to God, and there’s the pointing to the Messiah in 2:25 and 2:35. But even more mind-blowing to me was the story of Eli.

To give some context, Eli was an old priest, and he had two sons who were very disobedient in their priestly jobs. So Eli confronted them and tried to reason with them, and just check out what the Bible says about his sons in the second part of 2:25. “But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the Lord to put them to death.”

That’s insane. And that’s not all. In chapter 3, God appears to Samuel, a young boy at the time, and gives him a message. “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”

That scared me out of my skin. God swore that the sins of Eli’s family would not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever. We often refer to Jesus as our substitutionary atonement. It seems pretty clear that this did not apply to Eli’s family. In other words, Eli’s family is going to hell. God swore it. And so I wonder, what would be the proper reaction to such a message from the Lord? Let’s look at what Eli did. Starting from v15…

“Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. But Eli called Samuel and said, ‘Samuel, my son.’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ And Eli said, ‘What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.’ So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, ‘It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.’”

Eli’s response was, “It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.” That is the true recognition of God’s sovereignty. Even when God has pitted it all against you, simply recognize that God is in control, and comply with his plan. If it is the Lord’s will, how can we run against it? How can we cry “injustice” into the face of the God of justice?

I’ve heard people say to me that they could never follow a God who condemns people to hell. But the issue isn’t God but us. God has told us in the Bible that he condemns people to hell. That’s been the case ever since the world began. The issue is whether or not we are going to follow such a God. If God told me somehow that my parents were going to hell, or if my brothers were going to hell, it would definitely be something I would wrestle with, but at the end of the day, I would have to admit, “It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.” Does not Jesus say in Matthew 10:37, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me”? It’s a hard truth, but Jesus asks for our all. Even if God’s good runs contrary to what we believe is good, it must pass. And we must watch it pass.

- Larry

His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been capturedd adn that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.

She named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The Glory has departed from Israel” – because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. She said, “The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

Follow the chain of events here… A war is fought and lost. Two corrupt priests are killed. The Ark of the Covenant is captured. A nation is thrown into despair. The leader is stunned enough to fall out of a chair and break his neck. His daughter-in-law is stunned enough to go into labor and die as a result. But just before she dies, she names her son and makes him a living memorial to the tragedy of God’s Ark being captured.

When the shock of God’s glory “leaving your country” is enough to cause the shocked death of leaders amid a grief stricken nation, you know that nation has put quite a bit of stock in the presence of the Lord.

As I think about the world I live in, I can’t help but be confronted with the truth that God is being pushed farther and farther away. I’ll admit, I’ve never been one to claim America as a “Christian nation,” but the steady removal of all things “God” from our culture is unmistakable. And I wonder… Why is our shock and grief so much less than Eli’s?

When our churches are more concerned with the horror of a potential coffee cup in a room labeled the “Sanctuary” than they are about the increasing distance between the Creator and the Creation, we’ve got a problem. And I ask this question… ”Why are we so much less dependent on God than the ancient Israelites were?” Where have we gone wrong? What gives us the idea that we can live life in any way BUT total dependance on the Creator?

Church, it’s time to repent of pointless arguments. It’s time to grieve the loss of souls. It’s time to discover what life completely dependent on God could resemble.

November 20th, 2009

In the promos for the season finale of Season Six of Project Runway, Lifetime uses dramatic music and a deep-voiced announcer to try to build suspense for the big reveal. However, in their language, they have something wrong: they create anticipation for the reveal of who is “the next big name in fashion,” and my immediate response is “who cares?”

See, what works about Project Runway is that it transfers the aesthetics of the fashion industry into terms that are unrelated to the fashion industry. I know nothing about fashion, but I know a lot about what Nina Garcia likes to see in fashion, or what the series values in terms of creativity. It’s created an audience that, even if they have no knowledge of the fashion industry, have gained knowledge of what Project Runway considers fashion. As such, rather than caring about what these young designers do in the context of the fashion industry, we care about how they situate themselves within the show’s cast of characters from seasons past. For a viewer like me, Bryant Park is the setting of the finale of Project Runway, not a global fashion event, which is why Lifetime language is demonstrative of the season’s failures: I don’t care if they’re a big name in fashion, I want them to be a big name for Project Runway.

And I can confirm that Irina, Althea and Carol Hannah will not be names to remember, a fact which has more to do with the way the show treated them than it does with their individual personalities and talent. And while we’ll never know if this season would have been more interesting if it were in New York, and if the production company hadn’t changed, what we do know is that Season Six failed to provide both the next big name in fashion and a single memorable name for this franchise.

[A few more thoughts on Project Runway, and then some thoughts on both Top Chef and Survivor, with spoilers after the jump...]

I won’t spend any more time identifying what went wrong this season, as Linda Holmes at NPR has pretty much done that for me, but I want to say that Irina is about the perfect winner for the season. She had the most sense of character and the most interesting point of view, but was still ultimately uninteresting and lacking in identity, fitting the season perfectly. I didn’t think her collection was actually that interesting, but compared to Carol Hannah’s (which lacked cohesion) and Althea’s (which lacked clarity – there’s a difference) it was about as close to a winning collection the season could get.

And while some eliminations this season have been impossible to predict thanks to the confusing mismatch of judges, this one was really easy to see coming based on the judges’ deliberation. You could sense the judges were struggling to come up with something to say about each designer: these final critiques are always more positive than negative, and yet you could sense that the positives were all more dull than you could imagine. You could sense the judges trying to pretend as if there was ever a sense of consistency in the design aesthetics: my favourite was Heidi describing Carol Hannah, which I’ll now quote for you.

“You do see Carol Hannah, you see her point of view, and she loves dresses, and she’s impeccable in her tailoring…I mean that’s…what has…made her get this far, because she’s always been very good at that.”

So her point of view is dresses and impeccable tailoring, and the reason she got this far is because she was very good at it. Right there, with all the stammering pauses intact, you have the problem: she had no point of view except making acceptable clothes decently. Michael Kors had a similarly laughable moment when he described Althea as “very plugged into the street,” which made me guffaw. None of these designers could possibly be street-smart, and it was as if they were so desperate to distinguish these designers from one another that they needed to pigeonhole them into one idea. It made for a really hilarious sequence as you could sense things unraveling, and yet they could do nothing but plug on through and pretend that this really was the most dramatic finale of all time.

What’s interesting about Survivor (yep, this is a segueway) this season is that, for a show that often creates drama where there is none in an effort to make the final tribal council interesting, the producers have been able to sit back and watch people self-destruct over the past three weeks. Never before has a merge created quite this much chaos, and I’m sure Mark Burnett is giddy about the whole thing: I’m not sure I can remember the last time I’ve sat through the last quarter of this many episodes in a row. I fell into a pattern a while ago that I would effectively stop watching the show in its entirety after the immunity challenge, knowing that (because of how common pecking orders are, and because of how rarely the immunity idol was in play) the result was inevitable, and there were only a few occasions where something surprising happened during my fastforwarding that would result in me going back to see how it went down.

But after the merge, the self-destruction within the Galu tribe (who were dominant early on) has been a joy to watch – as Erik, sitting on the jury after being the victim of the first set of bizarre circumstances, said last night, “Man, this is some good shit.” After last week saw the Galu tribe fail to listen to Monica and plan some sort of contingency in case Russell managed to find the hidden immunity idol (which he did), resulting in Kelly leaving the game, this week was all about the Galu tribe running around like chickens with their heads cut off. When things finally get to tribal council, the sides are tied at 5, and when John eventually switches sides in order to avoid the drawing of rocks (which could send himself or anyone else home) it’s yet another moment where Galu realizes that they are not, in fact, a tribe anymore. What’s interesting about John is that he is really part of the problem here: I think that Galu would have simply picked off a Foa Foa member in that first week if he hadn’t first suggested taking off Monica, which was the information Erik got burned on as a messenger, so he’s sort of the one who set this all in motion. As such, it’s fitting he puts the final nail in the coffin in what was a really engaging final tribal council. The first merge episode had the frantic switchover that got rid of Eric, last week had Russell’s cagey Idol play, and this week saw John kill Galu for good – a very eventful, and very strong, period for Survivor.

Top Chef, meanwhile, sort of had an off week. This isn’t to suggest that I didn’t like the end result, which has the always likely Final Four come together after Jennifer manages to throw off her demons to win the Quickfire and place respectably in the Elimination Challenge in earning a spot in the Napa Valley finale, which sees Eli sent home. The episode was about the camaraderie of the chefs, as they seemed to all get along and there was a whole lot of emotion to be found in the final sequence was Eli basically admits that he’s okay going home at this stage considering the people who are going on instead (which was especially sad after Eli had turned himself into an Inigo Montoya figure for his mentor Richard Blais earlier in the episode). I didn’t particularly like Eli, but the rest of the chefs did and as a result I found his departure interesting.

However, I think that (to bring this all full circle) the actual challenge suffered because I really had no idea what this supposed “Culinary Olympics” was really about, and more problematically the show couldn’t actually judge based on that sort of criteria considering the amount of time given to the chefs. I understand that they wanted to try to capture the spirit of the event, but while Project Runway has turned Bryant Park into a life long goal that everyone aspires to this competition came out of nowhere and had too little meaning for me to be all that excited about. It also created a strange scenario where the judging was supposed to be based on who best captured the spirit of the event, and yet because nobody really went wild with zucchini baskets or anything similar it ended up coming down to whose food tasted the best, which is why Kevin was ultimately named the winner even when many judges felt Bryan had the most potential within the context of this type of competition. I don’t doubt Kevin deserved to win based on some criteria, but considering the nature of this competition he himself admitted he didn’t show enough technique, so the judges seemed to ignore that aspect of the challenge in favour of simply feeling Kevin best-executed “food” and thus wins the $30,000.

It just goes to show you that there’s only so much you can do in an hour of reality television: sometimes you try to make an exciting season sound interesting, sometimes you have everything go perfectly and barely need to touch a thing, and in another instance you have a big idea that just never translates well into the competition (unless my lack of knowledge of Thomas Keller in some way destroyed my ability to see the challenge as a really big deal).

Cultural Observations

My favourite thing about the Runway finale was that we had the prior knowledge of the fact that, since this was taped during the period of legal limbo for the show, nobody knew who the designers were and thus they couldn’t actually be seen by the crowd and the media. What this means is that any time you saw any of the contestants watching the show, or saw the families, or saw the designers on the runway, that was all staged either before or after the fact (note how no one but the other designers comment on any contestant by name). What I loved is how, even if I hadn’t known that, the awkwardness of the introductions would have tipped me off: they were clearly uncomfortable with the charade.

Does anyone have any verdict on Models of the Runway? I stopped watching after about two weeks, and I found that the models were total non-entities for me as a result – I can’t imagine watching another 30-minutes of this terrible season every week, but I did miss not caring about Irina’s model in any capacity when she won.

My one complaint with Survivor is that they “gamed” the game too much in terms of trying to turn the “Immunity Idol” scavenger hunt that Russell invented into an actual part of the gameplay setup. It was way too easy to find when they were given a visual clue, and while it resulted in the “chase through the woods sequence” and got a good moment out of Dave being oh-so-close to finding it, I thought that it was a bit cheap and sort of took the spontaneity out of Russell’s genius.

I’ve had no issues with Kevin’s beard on Top Chef this season, as I believed it to be awesome, but then this week we saw what happens when he doesn’t spike his hair at all. It totally makes the beard look about 5x mangier, and the longish greasy hair he had in the preview for next week made it look even more ridiculous. The different hair at Napa (Padma had bangs, Jennifer’s was curly) totally took me out of the show, which really does say something about me, doesn’t it?

*spoilers imminent

Book: Låt den rätte komma in (Let the Right One In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist

Movie: Let the Right One In (2008), by Tomas Alfredson (Director), John Ajvide Lindqvist (Screenplay)

With 56 wins & 16 movie nominations under its belt, Let the Right One In, a Swedish horror-fiction novel and film, has become an international success.

The story takes place in Sweden, 1982. The story mainly revolves around a 12-year-old boy, Oskar, and his new vampire friend Eli. There are several sub stories happening throughout the movie/book which deals with dark issues and forbidden romance. The book and the movie are almost one in the same. There are lines from the book that translate to the movie without ever skipping a beat. Although the movie hits on all major points, there are of course differences in the book.

OSKAR (Kare Hedebrant)

Oskar’s bullies refer to him as “piggy.” In the book, Oskar is a husky kid, hence the nickname “piggy.” For screen purposes, I am assuming Hedebrant was casted because he was creepy good at playing Oskar and had the right face for the role.

ELI (Lina Leandersson)

The movie beats to a dark rhythm, so there is hardly any room to make Eli more appealing. In the book, Eli is and acts like a 12-year-old child. There is a scene in the book where she blatantly makes fun of the guy in the candy booth and plays childish games with Oskar.

Since the movie didnt go in-depth with Hakan’s character, Eli’s caretaker, you did not see Eli’s willingness to do what she needed to do in order to survive.

Theres a shot in the movie where Eli is sleeping in a bathtub bed, let me be the first to tell you, she sleeps somewhere a lot more horrific than that cozy little setup she has going on.

She has wings.

Eli is a hardcore fighter and can take hard hits.

In the movie, Eli shows Oskar the consequences of what happens when you dont invite a vampire in. Right after that scene, Oskar is sitting on a couch and Eli is telling him, “be me, for a little while.” The frames get all crazy and all of a sudden, he’s just sitting there. What should have happened there is Oskar gets flooded with the memories of Eli’s vampire change through her eyes.

Warning: Kissing Eli can also induce even more visions of her past, with or without your consent.

The movie doesn’t delve into Eli’s sexuality. It throws you off because she says she’s not a girl, but it’s never explained. The book goes into how she got to be where she is and why she’s been stripped of any gender.

Eli stands for Elijah.

HAKAN (Per Ragnar)

Pedophile to the grossest degree. They showed little cheek strokes, but in the book he is completely disgusting.

There is this internal war waging when he kills for her. Since they dont develop him in the movie, you just assume he does it and he doesnt think twice about it.

As Hakan is prepping his kill in the bathroom in the movie, the book tells a completely different story. The acid-to-face happened, but the whole scene was brushed over in order to get him out of the story as soon as possible.

Hakan doesnt just die after Eli feeds from him. If you noticed, Eli had to break Jocke’s neck in order for him not to rise up as a vampire. Virginia on the other hand was fed off of but was never disposed of properly. Lets just say Eli was negligent in taking Hakan out all the way.

In the book, he plays a MAJOR role in the ending. He turns into something like a zombie though. Regardless, hes still as sick in the head alive as he is as a zombie.

Hakan likes boy-Eli.

There are more differences, but the movie hit all of the main points and tied them nicely together. The book is really something else. Although, the end scene when Eli becomes Oskar’s angel of death is so much cooler to watch than too read.

Change

Well its been a week now with the helmet. Eli has become accustomed to it, and his parents are now in the groove. We started out the breakin period a little rough, He seemed intrigued by it but was unsure he liked it. A couple of hours on and an hour off for the first day or two then 4 hours, then a full day. Now we are 23 hours on, and one hour off for bath time. His doc scheduled us for regular visits where he’ll check the fit, see if we having any questions, and measure the circumference of his head. In 3 or 4 months his head should stop growing because his helmet is full. At that time, we’ll do another scan to check the form of his head and hopefully his head will be well rounded and he wont have to wear it anymore.

Challenge

With every change comes challenge. Not terrible change, but a definite way of doing things. His clothes have to be able to stretch over his head or over his legs and abdomen. Button up items are not a bonus as well. We have to be mindful of his schedule as the night progresses making sure to get his helmet off, washed, and dry within the hour. Eli has noticed he can’t snuggle up on us anymore with his helmet, but its still cute when he tries. Truthfully, I think we miss that more than he does. Just the simple things that you get used to; kissing his cheeks, or Raspberring his forhead or neck. Not terrible, but you definitely realize how nice the little things are when they are gone. Wilson is unsure of the helmet-clad boy wonder, but he’s slowing warming up him.

Life in General

Physical therapy is going well, my child is very stubborn and is fine playing by himself, but as soon as they start to make him stretch, or make him sit on his side to reach for something, basically anything that will help him strengthen that side of his neck/body he gets mad and cries. Its kinda funny, as much as he fights with it, you can tell its helping and the flexibility and strength is coming. He’s eating us out of house and home, and he is starting to outgrow more and more of his clothes. His personality is starting to show through a little more and more, and he’s exploring his vocal cords. This week we will be exploring Birch run with his Aunt and Grandma Nichols. His likes to put his feet in his mouth, and loves to drool over anything he can put in his mouth. Teeth I’m sure arent too far away (at least then we can blame the drool on the teeth ) Until then, keep on keeping on.

Below you will see the poster for my upcoming, Free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Workshop. It has all the information you need to find out how to attend. However, please read below the poster, as I have a couple thoughts to share with ya. Thanks.

Free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Workshop!!!

I have been working on ways in which I, and my Three Rivers Martial Arts family, can give back to the community that has made us what we are. Beyond that, I have been trying to come up with as many ways, qualitatively and quantitatively, to give back to the community on a global scale. This is a simple and complicated task.

The easy part is doing: Give to charities, spread joy and kindness, harm no one, live the Golden Rule in everything you do.

The hard part is the direction and organization: How do you make compassion contagious? How exactly do you get others involved? I found what may be the most perfect answer at the most perfect time for me. I came across a TEDTalk (which are always awesome and you should check out by clicking here if you’ve never seen these before), by a woman named Karen Armstrong. She came up with an idea/initiative called The Charter for Compassion. I checked out her lecture, was blown away; checked out some videos on the topic, was amazed; and read the Charter on the site devoted to it, and was overwhelmed! This Charter has some meat to it. It is not an empty, vacuous set of ideas floating with no direction and saying “Hey guys, can you please be nice to each other if you get around to it?” No, rather, this is a mandate of sorts, it seems to me, stating that if we cannot spread compassion, and disseminate the true nature of what it means to be compassionate, then we are headed for misery and downfall.

I will explain another time what the hell Jiu-Jitsu has to do with Compassion, if you don’t already understand, but for now it is just simply my vehicle to promote awareness and get people involved with the charitable principles of compassionate awareness. Like Edmund Bourne said:

“Despite our differences, we are all in this together. No act of kindness or compassion goes unnoticed. To change the world, take compassionate action within your immediate sphere of influence. To change yourself, start by being still and making time just to listen.”

So it is in that vein, that I invite you all out to my workshop, where I will show you some of the best Jiu-Jitsu that I can, get you excited about learning such an incredible system, and hopefully (my greatest intention) create an atmosphere that breeds so much compassion that it is palpable. Bring what you can: food(canned, packaged, not highly-perishable), clothing, toys, and of course cash. Every bit of it will go to local charitable organizations and help out families and individuals in need.

If, you don’t have anything to give when you show up, I will not turn you away. You can participate in the workshop for the admission price of one promise. You must make me a promise that you will, on that day, affirm the Charter for Compassion on the charterforcompassion.org website, and also that you will do some compassionate, selfless, altruistic act of kindness. That is all. But you have to mean it.

Thank you, Dear Reader. Now, go do your practice!

This morning’s (November 17, 2009) Israeli media runs a flurry of criticism of the settlers, settlements and government inaction against them.

Yediot’s senior military analyst, Alex Fishman, who is also chairman of the Israeli Military Correspondents Chamber and hardly a bleeding heart, is appalled. In an analysis piece placed alongside news reporting on the latest chapter of the settler-soldier rebellion in West Bank, he rails

What is the greatest chutzpah? To establish, in an illegal settlement, an illegal factory that produces temporary structures for more illegal settlements. And to do so openly, in the light of day, under the nose of the government and with the knowledge of the law enforcement agencies. In fact, this is not just chutzpah. This is anarchy.

[...]

we, with our own two hands, are providing the rope that will be used as a noose for the [Israeli-Palestinian diplomatic] negotiations.

Full text of the article is below, note that also contains a wealth of previously unreported details on the issue.

Stop the anarchy

Analysis, Alex Fishman, Yediot, November 17 2009 [page 7]

What is the greatest chutzpah? To establish, in an illegal settlement, an illegal factory that produces temporary structures for more illegal settlements. And to do so openly, in the light of day, under the nose of the government and with the knowledge of the law enforcement agencies. In fact, this is not just chutzpah. This is anarchy.

Such an illegal factory for trailers exists, for example, in Havat Gilad in the southern Hebron hills. There are two other such anonymous factories in the West Bank, and this is no coincidence. It is much safer and convenient there. The law enforcement agencies are liable to stop trailers that are manufactured inside the Green Line at the crossings, or at least monitor their passage into the West Bank. To drive trailers from inside the Green Line to the West Bank, you need permits, whereas in the West Bank, you don’t need any permission from anyone.

Moreover, the trailers produced have amazing qualities: they are capable of merging into the scenery, and then suddenly popping up, like mushrooms after rain, on these or those hills. In the settlements of Kochav Yaakov and Eli, for example, 12 trailers suddenly popped up to house new immigrants from France. Straight from the plane to the trailer. And how do they get water and electricity? The head of the local authority, who receives a salary from the Interior Ministry, approves it, the regional engineer signs, and everything is legal.

This is what the settlers call “natural growth,” and they expect, that using this argument, the State of Israel will face the Americans with clean hands. The prime minister and defense minister persuaded envoy Mitchell that there is childbirth in the territories, and indeed there is “childbirth.” Including new immigrants from France. Everyone seems to think that the Americans are idiots and that they can be sold a bill of goods forever. Then they’re insulted that Obama makes faces at Netanyahu and doesn’t believe him.

It doesn’t need to be mentioned that the prime minister and the ministers know very well about these tricks, but they prefer to close their eyes. There is no law, no judge, and nobody enforces any law in the territories. So is it any wonder that this anarchy has trickled down into the army as well? Why not, what will they do to them? Nobody should be surprised if the displays of protest in the army against the evacuation of buildings and settlements only continue and gain momentum. After all, these soldiers receive a few days in the stockade—as if they’d committed a traffic violation—and become, automatically, heroes.

Today the protest is by means of signs, tomorrow the protest will be expressed in acts, in disobeying orders, in sedition. The army is paying a price for the fact that there is no law in the territories, that everyone does as they see fit. The chief of staff will have no choice but to come to the defense of the army that is beginning to slide down the steep slope of politicization and put an end to this, even in a brutal fashion. Because there is already a smell of political mutiny in the air.

And what was the soldier’s protest about yesterday? About two illegal buildings that were demolished in the settlement of Negohot. An observer from the side might have thought for a moment that the State of Israel had decided to stop illegal construction in order to create an appropriate atmosphere to make a renewal of the negotiations with the Palestinians possible. But the building demolition in Negohot is a joke. In the last few months there has been a momentum of construction taking place in the territories, of hundreds of buildings in dozens of settlements. Ever since the American demand was raised to completely freeze construction in the settlements, and ever since Netanyahu’s Bar Ilan speech about two states for two peoples, there has been a race taking place on the ground: to squeeze in as much as possible. Along with the illegal construction taking place, old construction permits suddenly show up that have not been implemented for many years. Every concrete base ever poured and then frozen has come back to life and sprouted walls.

The prime minister and defense minister managed to reach a compromise with the Americans making it possible to complete the construction of about 3,000 units already in various stages of construction, all in order to buy industrial quiet with the settlers and appease them and their supporters in the government. 3,000? They’re laughing. Nobody, including in the government, has any idea how many legal and illegal construction starts there are on the ground today.

It’s not that the Palestinians are saints and constantly seeking ways to return to the negotiations. But we, with our own two hands, are providing the rope that will be used as a noose for the negotiations.

A responsible government can stop this anarchy. Even if there are no negotiations with the Palestinians, it must instruct the OC Central Command to issue a military order to freeze all construction in the territories—with or without a permit—until further notice. Every construction will be discussed separately. With no winking. When the army realizes that the political echelon is serious, that will help it instate order in its ranks.

In my little world of paper crafting, I began as a scrapbooker. When I was 5, I remember putting greeting cards inside those old paper albums. At some point, I graduated to real scrapbooks in college and then got restarted when James and I got married.

Today, I thought I’d share some scrapbooking layouts. The theme? My birthday…what fun, since it was yesterday. My family gave me a great day. Thanks to Hannah and James.

Let’s see this one a few years ago. (It was the ONLY time I turned 39, really). The challenge for you is to see if you can find all 39 candles.

Next, how about a trip back in time to my first birthday. Since these are the original, vintage photos, I used clear photo corners to put them on the page. Just in case I ever need to remove them for any reason.

Now, in honor of the snow we have outside today is a layout of Hannah. This is one of my favorite photos of her on Christmas, outside in the snow. I love those pink cheeks and the colorful snow suit she is wearing.

Thanks for letting me share some of where I began in this industry. I’ve changed a lot over the years but my love for this type of paper craft will never disappear.

Happy shoveling and creating…Eli
