Gender: Feminine
Origin: Hebrew
Meaning: “God is my oath; God is abundance.”

The name is a transliterated form of the Biblical Greek Ελισβετ (Elisabet), which is a Hellenized version of the Biblical Hebrew feminine name, אֱלִישֶׁבַע‎ (Elisheva).

Elizabeth appears twice in the Bible, once in the Old Testament as the name of Aaron’s wife and once in the New Testament as the wife of Zachariah and the mother of John the Baptist.

Elizabeth has remained fairly consistent in the U.S top 100 for over a hundred years. She currently ranks in at # 9 and the lowest she has ever come in the U.S. charts was in 1945 at # 26.

In Australia she is the 37th most popular female name (2007), in Canada, she ranks in at # 20 (2008), in England/Wales she came in at # 40 (2008), in Ireland at # 63 (2007) and in Scotland at # 68 (2008).

The name was borne by several saints and European royalty. Among the most notable bearers were, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, a 12th-century Hungarian princess who was known for her acts of kindness and charity toward the poor and Queen Elizabeth I of England, including the current reigning Queen, Elizabeth II.

The name Isabel/Isabella are relatives, but have becomes so far apart from its original source, that they often occur concurrently in many European countries with Elizabeth, hence is why I shall devote a different post to Isabel/Isabella, but I shall cite her several times in this article as a variation whenever needed.

I believe one of the reasons why Elizabeth has been a long time favorite, is because of her versatility. She can be shortened to a variety of different nicknames, especially in English. The most popular are: (I have cited the ones that have commonly been used as independent given name with a black club)

Bess, Bessie, Beth♣, Bets, Betsy, Bet, Bettie/Betty, Bezzy, Bit, Bitsy, Biz, Buffy, Elisa♣, Elise♣, Elle♣, Eliza♣, Ella♣, Ellie, Elsa♣, Elsie♣, Ibbie, Lib, Libby, Lilly, Lisa♣, Liz, Lizzie, Liza♣, Tetty, Tibby and Tizzy.

Other forms of the name include:

Il testo:

HALLELUJAH

I heard there was a secret chord
That david played and it pleased the lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you
Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ….

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah …. .

Baby i’ve been here before
I’ve seen this room and i’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before i knew you
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ….

Well there was a time when you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you
But remember when i moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Well, maybe there’s a god above
But all i’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
It’s not a cry that you hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah ….

Il testo:

TI VORREI SOLLEVARE

Mi hai lasciato senza parole
Come una primavera
E questo è un raggio di luce
Un pensiero che si riempe
Di te
E l’attimo in cui il sole
Diventa dorato
E il cuore si fa leggero
Come l’aria prima che il tempo
Ci porti via
Ci porti via
Da qui

Ti Vorrei Sollevare
Ti vorrei consolare
Mi hai detto ti ho visto cambiare
Tu non stai più a sentire
Per un momento avrei voluto
Che fosse vero anche soltanto
Un pò
Perchè ti ho sentito entrare
Ma volevo sparire
E invece ti ho visto mirare
Invece ti ho visto sparare
A quell’anima
Che hai detto che non ho

Ti Vorrei Sollevare
Ti vorrei consolare
Ti Vorrei Sollevare
Ti vorrei ritrovare
Sapere inventare
Sentire il vento che soffia
E non nasconderci se ci fa spostare
Quando persi sotto tante stelle
Ci chiediamo cosa siamo venuti a fare
Cos’è l’amore
Stringiamoci più forte ancora
Teniamoci vicino al cuore

Ti Vorrei Sollevare
Ti vorrei consolare
Sapere inventare
Sentire il vento che soffia
E non nasconderci se ci fa spostare
Quando persi sotto tante stelle
Ci chiediamo cosa siamo venuti a fare

No, lascia perdere. E sprofonda. Indovinate in che lingua cantiamo i nostri testi? Un aiutino, non è il turco…

Canta che ti passa. But do it in Italian

Some say that if you rock and you grew up in a country shaped like a boot, there’s no escape, you have to sing in Italian, which otherwise no one will really give you credit. And it speaks only of various record companies and, no, there’s more. We say that if you are Italian and songs in a different language, say English, you can not even count on the credit of an audience that is truly affections of you. Because if people do not understand you, communication by definition does not take shape and substance and stops any artistic aspirations and, well, market.

In short, if you want to sing in a language different from yours, you have to look out the window and catch a plane take you somewhere. No matter where, no matter if you land in Europe, the United States or Asia. The important thing is that you do not remain in Italy to break the boxes to the artists who express themselves in the idiom of their parents and their grandparents. So, English is still a bargain for everyone. Speak it in a few, very few understand it. If the pronunciation, then, is better than average, there are just hopes, prepares the suitcase, it’s time to leave.

No, forget it. Examples of Elisa, the line 77, Mario Biondi and the many others who have opted for a “song as I think to myself” does the job. Can not be taken into account. What of it. They have been successful and can do what he likes. It matters little whether the axiom was true even before they become. Sure, you could also say that the young Italian average listen to and enjoy music with great envy and enthusiasm that comes from abroad. And it does so often, even more. But then, Italians were not the people of the “best of the Italian text, or do not understand it and I do not like? The issue threadbare. Collapsed. Guess what language we sing our lyrics? A little help, is not turkish …

I thought that a little excerpt wouldn’t hurt considering that I haven’t updated since J

I thought that a little excerpt wouldn’t hurt considering that I haven’t updated since June? July maybe? Sigh and school is ending, thank God.

If any of you didnt know (Im pretty sure none of you do) I’m a twilight fan. That’s right I said it. Ready your torches and pitchforks! Or lets squee in joy and gush about the characters! Either way, I enjoyed my night when I saw New Moon last night. Jacob Black is my favorite and I adored every moment he had on-screen. Not to mention that Taylor Lautner is one hot stud muffin. So anyway, I absolutely adore the OST. It really gets the creative juices going!

In that spirit, I wrote a good chunk of a scene in my head for Sin Divine. Thanks to “Possibility” by Lykke Li, I wrote a quick drabble so I wouldn’t forget. None of you will understand since the rest of the scene isn’t there so don’t worry if it’s all confusing.

Enjoy.

The cliff was draped by the length of the dark crimson skirt. My legs and feet dangled while the breeze quietly passed through. It never stayed, the wind. It passed through never contemplating that I would have done anything to be like it. To have the freedom to run any where what my human heart desired. There was no chains to prevent it. No boundaries or lines that it couldn’t cross.

The days without Aiden suddenly became lonely. Although the palace was buzzing with live people, it was hard to stay alive when the loneliness set in. Aiden had been away for a few months now. Though the bed was usually unoccupied by Aiden, he would sometimes crawl in in the middle of the night and sleep. Some times I would wake before the nightmare haunted my dream and I would catch Aiden slip inside the bed. He was careful to not wake me but I dont think he knew. It was a sudden loss when I would wake to nothing in the morning. I missed, much to my regret, seeing his curls cover his eyes in the moonlight. My sleepy eyes would watch him inhale and exhale before I too drifted off.

The wind stayed for a while longer. It caressed me as it blew by, holding me in its invisible grasp, comforting me. I threw white petals over the cliff as my thoughts began to mix themselves. The wind must have not liked it considering that every petal that left my fingers, it took back. Instead of landing in the ocean below, the wind would take it to the fields behind me. I prayed that it would take those petals far from here. Perhaps to where Aiden would be, where ever he was.

At last, after picking off all the soft white and pink petals, in to my hands, I clasped my hands together. In a moment of heartache, I kissed my dead flowers. With a last exhale, I threw them all to their destination, not caring where they left. Because at least now I could see them leave with my own eyes.

I sat there for a while longer. The sun phased in and out due to the clouds that were idling by on their lazy pace. The ocean was consoling. I did not know if it was because Bashara told me it was because of the first Eve who had loved it, or because I really did find it beautiful. Either way, I spent my time watching the nature of it all. Some how, perhaps in the deep conscious of my mind, I hoped to see Aiden’s ship come to shore.

After that thought, the tears fell like droplets of rain. One, I noticed, fell into my palm. A white petal had remained with me, hiding itself between my hand my skirt. Weakly a smile appeared. It was all madness, i thought. Yet what was life without a little insanity to keep one sane?

“You too should go. You have some where to go better than this jail cell,” I smiled at the petal, before releasing it to the wind.

I scooted myself up from the rocky seat, careful to keep the skirt intact. Before leaving, I gave the shore one last look. Nothing again. I turned, letting the breeze play with my hair. Drying my tears with my fingers, I began to walk away, knowing that duties waited. Had I known then, I would have stayed. I would have stayed to see his ship hit the shore with ease. I would have run through all that terrain to welcome him in open arms, with a desperation for contact, or a simple hello. If I had stayed just for a few moments longer, then maybe he would not have turned away. Had I known that he was watching me through the orb, I would have scooped that orb in to my hands and asked him to come back.

The field blew gently to the west. Shadows casted by the sun moved sluggishly as the time passed. The smell of the ocean was high in the air.

That night, I sat beside the window to watch for his ship again. I hated doing this every night. It was better than to have the nightmares creep in to the privacy of my mind. After a few moments, I shuffled towards the vanity seat. A picture frame stood next to a wide vase of arranged orchids. It was of Aiden and I, sitting on the brick wall when we had first arrived. Neither of he nor I knew what expression to have. The seriousness of our faces almost made me chuckle. In truth, neither of us were naturally serious yet here we displayed a type of regency.

I placed the picture down. It didnt need to know the sadness that I felt. It didnt need to know that falsehood that we were acting.

Elisa brushed a hand through her hair after expelling a sigh. Her blue eyes lacked luster as she examined that the blackish-blue skin beneath her eyes. After a few more moments, Elisa finally rose from her seat and slowly slipped in to bed. Even a nightmare of home would have dispelled the loneliness.

Hours passed. The night was alive with possibility and people walking through the streets. Elisa, however, was in a deep sleep. She no longer wanted to attend the activities that Eve would normally attend. There was no point in being there if she did not enjoy them.

Footsteps quietly entered the room. A bag was set down near a large decorative trunk next to the lounging pillows. Hooded, dirty and silent, the shadow moved with heavy regret. He could hear her heart beating slowly, crying and quietly. His brows furrowed in guilt. There was a grave silence in the room. He knew what he had to do whether he liked it or not. Her heart he could hear. Whether he could feel his was another story.

Comments are welcome C: Make sure that they are constructive, please.

- Artista: Jeff Buckley;

- Interpreti: Leonard Cohen’s, Bon Jovi, Elisa, John Cale.

- Album: Grace;

- Anno di pubblicazione: 1994.

Il testo:

HALLELUJAH

Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja

E dalle tue labbra fece uscire l’Halleluja

Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja

Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja

Be’, forse c’è un dio lassù

Halleluia, Halleluia, Halleluia, Halleluia

“[The barges] come in with everything,” said Roland Lewis, President and CEO of Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, a non-profit working to revitalize New York and New Jersey waterways. “From construction materials, to underwear, to beer.”

When cargo ships approach the bay, which starts just south of the Verrazano Bridge, they are met by the Sandy Hook Pilots. The Pilots safely guide the ships into New York City, under the Verrazano Bridge, which is the unofficial gateway to the harbor. In addition, the Pilots check the boat for safety violations.

Once the merchandise arrives to ports, it is unloaded and distributed throughout the tri-state area and beyond. According to the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, the largest imported containerized cargo volumes were furniture, clothing, beer, and ale. The largest containerized cargo volumes for export were paper, carbon, crepe, automobiles, scrap metal, and auto parts.

Currently, there are 52 companies licensed as stevedores (people that are responsible for loading and unloading cargo ships) that operate the five ports in the bay. These companies employ 6,188 workers, which include 372 port watchmen, 323 pier superintendants, and 2,167 “deep sea” longshorepersons, among others.

“We’re taking action to expand New York’s maritime industry,” said Peter W. Davidson, Executive Director of Empire State Development, a New York State agency that provides assistance and service to businesses in order to encourage economic investment and prosperity in New York. “Waterfront businesses are a critical part of our economy, and we think it’s important to do whatever is necessary to create room for them to thrive. The Harbor should include good maritime jobs, and both recreational and educational opportunities.”

E palpita forte.

Tracklist: Vortexes – And All I Need – Anche Se Non Trovi Le Parole – This Knot – Mad World – Ti Vorrei Sollevare (con Giuliano Sangiorgi) – Your Manifesto – The Big Dipper – Someone To Love – Poems By God – Coincidences – Lisert – Forgiveness (feat. Antony) – Dot In The Universe

Last week I spent some time with Elisa and Lily of Style Like U, and actually went to their apartmen

Last week I spent some time with Elisa and Lily of Style Like U, and actually went to their apartment (which doubles as their office) to see the two of them, their assistants, 5 interns and 2 dogs in action. The website is run by mostly Gen Yers of Lily’s age (20), but the site’s subjects range from the 9-year-old daughter of a model to fashionistas in their 80’s! That specific day, I followed Elisa on a shoot in Chinatown, where she interviewed a 53-year-old artist about her life, art, marriage, and most importantly-her style.

At their apartment in Alphabet City, Elisa tells me that she founded the website because it’s something she was passionate about, and she was tired of the industry after being a professional stylist for 20 years.

It’s not about showing yourself like ‘Oh, look at me, I look so good!’ It’s a contemporary forum, and I’m trying to bring back creativity, something inspiring, something that isn’t controlled by advertisers. This site is more of a movement, and it allows me to show that style is different than fashion.

The world is full of people that aren’t so interesting, and I’m trying to get the interesting ones. The style and the clothes part is just the door, and the common thread, but it’s really about the people behind it.

Photos: I took these at the shoot, of Elisa filming Katia Santibanez, an artist, in her studio with her favorite clothing and her artwork.
