Police Say Sword Contacted Son, Now a Teenager, Over the Internet

A Michigan mother is facing a trial after being accused of having a summer romance with the teenage son she gave up for adoption.

Aimee Louise Sword, 35, who is free on bond after her arrest, was initially charged with three counts of felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct. A judge this week reduced the charges to one count, but police say she is accused of a “very serious crime.”

Why reduce the charges?  Keep them high, in fact make them harsher.  The only real excuse someone could use is actual mental defect.  Even then, I would want to keep them for observation…

Sword began a sexual relationship with her biological son in the summer of 2008 after reconnecting with him on the Internet, Waterford Township Police Sgt. Scott Good told ABCNews.com.

“She had given the child up early on in life for adoption,” he said, adding that Sword’s adoption agreement permitted limited contact with the boy.

Good said police were notified about the alleged incestuous romance in the fall after being contacted by Child Protective Services.

I want to know who did CPS know that there was this relationship that was taking place?  Whoever was the whistle blower, great job…

After an investigation that resulted in the three-count warrant, Sword surrendered to police April 24. She was released a short time later on a $3,000 bond.

How is this only a 3k bond?  So, he hit off the bail bonds dude with 300 dollars and she was free to go?  I think that she deserved a little higher bond.

Sword’s lawyer Kenneth Burch told ABCNews.com that his client has pleaded not guilty ahead of the pre-trial date set for Sept. 21.

“Anybody would be distraught and she is because of the allegations she is faced with,” he said. “She’s meeting this head on.”

Are you distraught that you got caught, or that you did what you did?

Burch would not go into detail about Sword or her life, but confirmed she has other children who have since been removed from the house by CPS. There were never any allegations of abuse involving the other children, he said.

Her ex-mother-in-law, before hanging up on ABCNews.com, said that she’s “not interested in any interview, anything with my grandchildren.”

First, this lady has had other kids removed.  While that is not a sign of guilt, it is pretty damning.  Second, big up to the grandmother NOT talking to the media.  They are never going to go away, so don’t feel the need to feed them.  Everything that you are going to say, wait to say it in court, or don’t say it at all.

Mom Accused of Incest

Police said it was clear there were multiple sexual encounters with the teen.

Because of police policy regarding criminal sexual conduct cases and the fact that Sword’s son is a minor, Good said he could not release other details, including the boy’s whereabouts or even his current age.

Sword’s ex-husband couldn’t be reached for comment.

Ex has nothing to say, because I imagine that he feels emasculated.  no father wants to be eclipsed by their son.

Serious would seem to indicate a high bond.  I am sure that Joe Fritzl didn’t have a small bond… What the hell goes through some people’s heads?… You didn’t learn from the mistakes of others in the news?

Este Jueves 27 de agosto se dio a conocer un caso más que supera a cualquier película de horror. Se trata del caso de Jaycee Lee Dugard una mujer que fue secuestrada en 1991 y después de 18 años pudo reencontrarse con su familia. Pero sin embargo eso no es lo alarmante.

Jaycee estuvo cautiva en casa de su captor “Phillip Garrido” e incomunicada con el mundo viviendo bajo condiciones deplorables  cos sus dos hijas quienes son actualmente fruto de las violaciones a las que fue sometida. “La policía señaló que Phillip Garrido la tuvo todo ese tiempo virtualmente como una esclava sexual, oculta del mundo exterior en tiendas de campaña y cobertizos en su patio trasero en el suburbio de Antioch, con varias cercas para impedir que escapara. Había electricidad tomada por medio de cables, retrete rudimentario, regadera rudimentaria, ”como si estuvieran acampando”, señaló uno de los agentes encargados del caso.” (el universal).

Ayer se dio a conocer que esta historia se pudo haber descubierto antes cuando se revelo que Phillip Garrido ya había sido condenado de secuestro y violación.” En 1971, Phillip Garrido fue condenado tras el secuestro de una mujer en Reno (Nevada) por ese delito y por violación. Conoció en la cárcel de Leavenworth (Kansas) a su mujer, que visitaba a otro preso. Tras su liberación la pareja se mudó a fines de los años 80 a la casa de la madre de Garrido en Antioch (California)”. (emol)

Siendo así, garrido se encontraba en “LIBERTAD BAJO PALABRA” a pesar de la gravedad del crimen por el que ya había sido condenado.

Otra de las primeras revelaciones fue que vecinos de garrido ya se habían dado cuenta de que había niñas viviendo bajo condiciones sospechosas.“Los vecinos se quejaron ante la policía de que un delincuente y psicópata sexual vivía entre ellos y estaban alarmados por el hecho de que Phillip Garrido alojara unas niñas en carpas en su traspatio. Un agente se presentó para investigar, pero nunca pasó más allá del porche delantero.” (Univision).

Y no fue hasta el mismo jueves que gracias a la conducta que presentaron las dos menores que acompañaban a Garrido repartiendo material religioso, fueron vistas por dos agentes de la Universidad de Berkley quienes se dieron cuenta que había algo raro en ellas. “Las niñas iban vestidas con colores discretos, eran inusualmente sumisas, tenían una palidez inusual y parecían robots y que habían ensayado lo que decían, agregó la agente.”(milenio).

Una de ellas le llamo  al Agente que estaba a cargo de la Libertad condicional de Garrido y le dijo que estaba sorprendida de saber que el tenia hijas de tan corta edad. Fue entonces que este dijo que Garrido no tenia hijas y decidieron citarlo para investigar. “El miércoles, Garrido llegó a la oficina del agente acompañado de su esposa, las dos niñas, y una mujer que en un principio dijo llamarse Allissa. Resultó ser Dugard y los investigadores dijeron que Garrido confesó haberla secuestrado en South Lake Tahoe en 1991 cuando ella tenía 11 años.” (milenio)

Fue así como se descubrió que este fanático religioso junto con su esposa Nancy Garrido, habían tenido en cautiverio a Jaycee durante 18 años junto con sus hijas a quienes nunca habían llevado a la escuela y al doctor.

Se espera que en estos días puedan obtenerse  mas datos sobre como las autoridades no pudieron darse cuenta de lo sucedido ya que este caso revive otras barbaries como la de Elisabeth Fritzl o el de Nastasha Kampusch.

Los medios deben mantenernos al tanto de este tipo de casos ya que aunque sean internacionales debemos recordar que hay muchos niños desaparecidos en México que por desgracia podrían estar inmiscuidos en una historia similar.

Incestopa Josef Fritzl had een kwart eeuw geleden al gestopt kunnen worden. Tot die verbijsterende conclusie komt onderzoeksjournaliste Stefanie Marsh in haar boek De Patriarch. “De Oostenrijkse autoriteiten zijn totaal incompetent én racistisch. Was Fritzl een kleurling met dreadlocks geweest, hadden ze hem veel eerder ontmaskerd.” 

Amper twee jaar na Natascha Kampusch stond Oostenrijk eind april 2008 opnieuw in het middelpunt van de internationale belangstelling: de 73-jarige Josef Fritzl bleek zijn inmiddels 42-jarige dochter Elisabeth 24 jaar lang in de kelder van zijn huis opgesloten te hebben en zwaar te hebben misbruikt. Hij verwekte in die periode zeven kinderen bij haar: drie verbleven bij hun moeder in de kelder en drie leefden bovengronds bij Fritzl en zijn vrouw Rosemarie. Een kind stierf kort na de geboorte. Fritzl had altijd beweerd dat Elisabeth weggelopen was, en zich bij een sekte aangesloten had.
In hun boek De Patriarch spitten De Britse journalisten Stefanie Marsh en Bojan Pancevski de zaak Fritzl uit tot op het bot. “Iets wat de Oostenrijkse autoriteiten halsstarrig weigeren te doen”, zegt Stefanie Marsh. “We hebben getracht om iedereen aan de praat te krijgen die ooit met Fritzl in contact geweest is. De Oostenrijkse overheid wou vanaf dag een de zaak Fritzl zo snel mogelijk onder het tapijt vegen. ‘We zullen ervoor zorgen dat dit geen invloed zal hebben op onze toeristische industrie’, was het eerste wat de Oostenrijkse kanselier Gusenbauer een paar dagen na het uitbarsten van de zaak zei. Veel mensen met een verantwoordelijke functie hebben expliciet de raad gekregen om zich gedeisd te houden en met niemand te spreken. We hebben veel brieven verstuurd, gemaild, getelefoneerd – en dat heeft uiteindelijk ook heel wat opgeleverd. Onderzoekers hebben met ons gepraat omdat ze willen dat de waarheid eindelijk naar boven komt. Alleen wou niemand met naam en toenaam in het boek. Want ze zijn bang om hun job te verliezen.”

Aan de ketting

Zaterdag 19 april 2008. In het ziekenhuis van Amstetten rijdt ’s morgens vroeg een ambulance binnen met een meisje in kritieke toestand. Dokter Albert Reiter, hoofd van het ziekenhuis, wordt erbij geroepen. Het 19-jarige meisje heet Kerstin, en wordt in een kunstmatige coma gehouden. Haar longen, lever en nieren functioneren niet goed. De ambulanciers hebben het meisje opgehaald in een huis aan de Ybbstrasse. Ze vertellen dat de grootvader van het meisje de bewusteloze Kerstin op de stoep gevonden had toen hij naar de bakker wilde gaan. De oude man was hevig geschrokken.

Een paar uur later ontmoet dokter Reiter opa Josef Fritzl. Met zijn haar over zijn kale schedel gekamd en zijn keurig getrimd snorretje oogt Fritzl als een eerbiedwaardig, keurig Oostenrijks heertje. Hij is vader van zeven kinderen, en een gerespecteerd technicus. Iedereen kent hem als Herr Ingenieur. Fritzl vertelt dat Kerstins moeder Elisabeth in een sekte zit, en dat hij zijn dochter al 24 jaar niet meer gezien heeft sinds ze op haar 18^e van huis wegliep. Hij neemt aan dat Kerstin achtergelaten is door Elisabeth, want in de loop der jaren heeft ze zo drie baby’s op zijn stoep gedumpt. Hij en zijn vrouw Rosemarie hebben met toestemming van de sociale diensten en overheidsinstellingen de kinderen opgenomen, en voeden hen nu op alsof het hun eigen kinderen zijn. Fritzl zegt dat Elisabeth een onhandelbaar kind was, die op haar zestiende al eens wegliep, en toen door de Weense politie was opgepakt. Hij doet er zijn beklag over dat de autoriteiten er na haar tweede verdwijning niet in geslaagd zijn om haar terug op te sporen.

Dokter Reiter stelt Fritzl voor om via de media rechtstreeks een oproep tot Elisabeth te richten. Hij wil weten wat er precies met Kerstin gebeurd is. Fritzl gaat akkoord. ’s Avonds zendt de plaatselijke radio een dringende oproep aan Elisabeth Fritzl uit.

“Dankzij Albert Reiters doortastende optreden is de zaak aan het rollen gegaan”, zegt Stefanie Marsh. “Op 26 april belde Fritzl Reiter op. Elizabeth was ‘boven water’ gekomen. Ze spraken af dat Fritzl Elizabeth naar het ziekenhuis zou brengen. Fritzl drong erop aan om de politie erbuiten te houden. Maar Reiter lichtte de politie wel in. Dezelfde avond werden Elizabeth en Josef Fritzl na hun bezoek aan het ziekenhuis door de politie voor verhoor meegenomen. Elisabeth zat een uur zwijgend in het politiebureau. Rond half elf begon ze te praten en vertelde ze het gruwelijke verhaal van haar 24-jarige gevangenschap in de kelder.”

De eerste jaren van haar gevangenschap verkrachtte Josef Fritzl zijn dochter minstens tweemaal per dag?

Stefanie Marsh: “Hij legde Elisabeth vast aan een ketting, zei amper een woord tegen haar en verkrachtte haar. Hij vernederde haar op elke mogelijke wijze. Hij hanteerde verkrachting als een wapen om haar te bezitten en controleren. Hij vond het belangrijk om haar in leven te houden. Hij maakte haar tot zijn slaaf.

“Fritzl heeft de opsluiting van zijn dochter maanden op voorhand gepland. Hij begon de kelder onder zijn huis in 1983 eigenhandig met twee kamers uit te breiden. Het was er vochtig, het schimmelde er en het stonk er, maar hij voelde er zich op zijn gemak. De hele tijd had hij het gevoel dat hij naar een bepaald doel toewerkte – al wist hij eerst niet wat. Tot hij op een dag in mei 1984 in een elektriciteitswinkel afstandbediening voor garagedeuren zag. Perfect materiaal om de deuren van de kelder veilig mee af te sluiten. Op dat moment besefte Fritzl dat hij aan de gevangenis voor zijn 18-jarige dochter Elisabeth aan het werken was. Vanaf haar elfde tot haar zestiende heeft hij Elisabeth misbruikt. Toen ze op haar zestiende van huis wegliep, werd hij bang dat ze misschien wel iets tegen de politie over het seksueel misbruik zou vertellen. Het is daarna gestopt. Elisabeth begon zich steeds onafhankelijker te gedragen. Fritzl maakte zichzelf en anderen wijs dat ze aan de drugs zat, terwijl ze nooit een drugprobleem gehad heeft. Zijn fantasie dat ze een junk was, flink op weg om een prostituee te worden, gebruikte hij als excuus om haar opsluiting te verantwoorden. Op 28 augustus 1984 sommeerde hij haar om mee te komen naar de kelder voor ‘een gesprek’. Hij verdoofde haar, sloot haar op en legde haar – zoals een hond – aan de ketting.

“Op het proces in maart van dit jaar legde Elisabeth achter gesloten deuren een schokkende getuigenis op video af over haar gevangenschap. Tijdens die getuigenis was ze ook lijfelijk aanwezig in de gerechtszaal. Volgens Fritzls advocaat Rudolf Mayer besefte zijn cliënt daardoor plots wat hij haar had aangedaan, barstte hij in tranen uit en pleitte hij daarom schuldig. Ik vind het zeer onwaarschijnlijk dat hij na 25 jaar plots zou beseffen dat hij iets verkeerd gedaan heeft. ‘Hoe kon ik dat toch doen? Zo een fijne dochter.’ Fritzl is een man die in zijn hele leven nooit iets gedaan heeft wat in zijn eigen nadeel zou kunnen spelen. Nooit. Het kwam hem gewoon beter uit om op dat moment schuldig te pleiten.”

Waarom koos hij Elizabeth?

“Hij zegt zelf dat zij hem aan zichzelf herinnerde. Je ziet trouwens vaak bij incestueuze families dat de vader zich ofwel aangetrokken voelt tot de zwakste, ofwel tot degene die hem aan hemzelf doet denken als kind. Elisabeth was op het verkeerde moment op de verkeerde plaats. Op haar elfde begon het misbruik, nadat haar oudere broers en zussen van huis waren weggegaan. Ze zat net in haar puberteit, en was totaal onbeschermd. Haar moeder hulde zich in stilzwijgen. Op dat moment was ze het meest kwetsbaar. Daar kwam bij dat ze tegen haar vader in opstand kwam, en daar kon hij niet tegen.”

Fritzl had al een verleden als seksueel delinquent?

“Als jonge kerel viel hij vrouwen lastig. Hij exhibitioneerde zichzelf op zijn zestiende en probeerde een vrouw te verkrachten. In 1967 ging hij ook echt over tot verkrachting. Elisabeth, zijn vierde kind, was pas geboren. Dagenlang volgde hij zijn slachtoffer, een verpleegster met een baby. Op een nacht klauterde hij haar slaapkamer binnen. Hij bedreigde haar met een mes en verkrachtte haar. De rechter veroordeelde hem tot een milde straf van 18 maanden. Hij vond dat Fritzl als patriarch van de familie, als hardwerkende kostwinner, onmisbaar was. De rechter stond er blijkbaar niet bij stil dat iemand die seksueel zo gewelddadig was, ook een gevaar zou kunnen betekenen voor zijn eigen familie. Natuurlijk waren het andere tijden dan nu, en was er nog geen groot onderzoek gedaan naar zoiets als incest. Een paar mensen in de stad zijn die verkrachting niet vergeten, maar de meesten vonden het niet zo erg. Fritzls vrouw Rosemarie heeft er trouwens ook nooit iets over gezegd. Ze was bang voor hem – hij kon erg gewelddadig uit de hoek komen, en ook bang voor een leven zonder hem. Toen hij in 1969 thuiskwam, was het verleden helemaal uitgewist.”

Totaal incompetent

Rosemarie Fritzl heeft altijd beweerd dat ze niets afwist van wat haar man hun dochter Elisabeth heeft aangedaan. Hoe geloofwaardig is dat?

“In gevallen van incest schijnen de meeste vrouwen het wel te weten. Er zijn er zelfs die hun kind vasthouden opdat hun partner het makkelijker zou kunnen verkrachten, alleen maar om te vermijden dat ze zelf nog langer misbruikt worden. Er zijn vrouwen die zo afgetuigd zijn door hun man, dat ze psychologisch helemaal dichtklappen en zich tot in het absurde gaan fixeren op de façade van ‘het perfecte gezinnetje’. Ze zijn tot alles bereid om dat imago hoog te houden. De clan wordt belangrijker dan het individu. Veel vrouwen die zelf zwaar mishandeld worden, klampen zich vast aan die façade. Ook Rosemarie Fritzl werd regelmatig afgetuigd door haar man. Het is moeilijk om erover te speculeren of ze van de incest of van de kelder op de hoogte was. We zullen allicht nooit weten wat haar rol precies was, want het is ook nooit onderzocht. Twee dagen nadat de Fritzl-zaak aan het licht gekomen was, liet de politie weten dat ze Rosemarie niet verder ging ondervragen. ‘We verdenken haar niet, want welke vrouw zou zoiets doen?’ Vanaf dag één hebben de Oostenrijkse autoriteiten er bewust voor gekozen om de hele zaak zo snel mogelijk te klasseren. Net als Rosemarie Fritzl hebben ze alle jaren ervoor de andere kant op gekeken. De sociale diensten, de politie… Iedereen keek meer dan 30 jaar lang de andere kant op.”

Volgens u dragen de Oostenrijkse autoriteiten een verpletterende verantwoordelijkheid in de zaak Fritzl?

“De Oostenrijkse autoriteiten zijn totaal incompetent. De politie deed haar uiterste best om Fritzl af te schilderen als een bijzonder sluwe, intelligente dader, die geen sporen of aanwijzingen naliet. Dat is totaal onjuist: er waren massaal veel aanwijzingen dat hij een gewelddadige pervert was. Er zijn zelfs bewust onderzoeken achterwege gehouden die het beeld van de ‘briljante criminele geest’ zouden kunnen helpen doorprikken. Fritzl ging er prat op dat hij een geluiddichte kelder gebouwd had. Wij hebben een ‘verdwenen’ vernietigend onderzoek van een expert terug boven water gehaald: de kelder bleek allesbehalve geluiddicht te zijn. Oplettende huurders hadden kreten om hulp kunnen opvangen. Wij hebben met de huurders gepraat, en ze geven toe dat ze soms rare geluiden hoorden. Maar hoe zou je zelf zijn? Wie legt er nu een link tussen geklop en een verdwenen meisje in een kelder? Een van de huurders zei iets over het geklop tegen Fritzl. Fritzl wuifde die opmerking weg met een verhaal over een tikkende boiler. De man vertelde me dat hij er nog altijd niet goed van is dat hij de echte link nooit gelegd heeft.

“In de loop der jaren is Fritzl drie keer gearresteerd voor zeer ernstige zedenfeiten waaronder een verkrachting; zijn vrouw is minstens een keer in het hospitaal beland nadat ze door hem ineengeslagen was. De aard van haar verwondingen had toen bij de dokters een bel moeten laten rinkelen. En dan waren er die drie ‘geadopteerde’ kinderen, zelfs de kranten schreven er toen over dat het een bizarre toestand was, maar op de sociale diensten stelde niemand zich een vraag. Wij hebben een verslag van de sociale dienst teruggevonden waarin de omstandigheden beschreven staan waarin Rosemarie het tweede kind vond. Ze wou het kind adopteren, en vertelt de maatschappelijk werkers wat er gebeurd is. Het was half elf ’s avonds. Ze hoort een kind wenen, opent de voordeur, en daar staat een kinderwagen. Ze neemt het kind mee naar binnen. Om middernacht rinkelt de telefoon. Rosemarie neemt op en hoort een bandje. ‘Ik ben Elisabeth’, zegt een vrouwenstem. ‘Het spijt me, ik moest het kind bij jullie achterlaten.’ Rosemarie legt de telefoon neer, hij begint weer te rinkelen en dezelfde boodschap wordt afgespeeld. Rosemarie Fritzl vertelt dat idiote verhaal aan de maatschappelijke assistenten, zij slikken het voor zoete koek en doen niets. Ze ondernemen geen enkele poging om op zoek te gaan naar Elizabeth. Als er één kind aan je deur gelegd wordt, is dat al zeer eigenaardig. Drie op een rij is toch complete waanzin?

“De autoriteiten hebben in de loop der jaren ontzettend veel aanwijzingen links laten liggen en zijn er daardoor mede verantwoordelijk voor dat Elisabeth zolang opgesloten geweest is. Josef Fritzl beweerde altijd dat Elisabeth in een sekte zat. Bij de politie en bij de sociale diensten zwaaide hij met brieven die ze zogezegd vanuit haar sekte verstuurd had. In werkelijkheid had hij die aan haar gedicteerd. De omslagen droegen allemaal Oostenrijkse postzegels. Het bizarre is dat er in die tijd geen sektes in Oostenrijk bestonden, er zijn er trouwens nog steeds geen. Als je de zaak Fritzl verzonnen had voor een roman, had iedereen het verhaal over the top gevonden. De autoriteiten geloofden rotsvast dat Fritzl een gerespecteerde ‘ingenieur’ was waar gewoonweg niets mis mee kon zijn. Mensen die er keurig en respectabel uitzien, moeten dat in werkelijkheid ook wel zijn.”

Dat zegt veel over de Oostenrijkse samenleving.

“We moeten natuurlijk oppassen dat we niet veralgemenen. Sommigen linken de Fritzl-zaak aan het onverwerkte oorlogsverleden van de Oostenrijkers. Het klopt dat ze nooit hun naziverleden hebben proberen verwerken zoals de Duitsers dat wel gedaan hebben. Notoire nazi’s die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog de plak zwaaiden, bleven later gewoon op hun plaats zitten of namen zonder problemen hun rol in de maatschappij weer op. Tot op de dag van vandaag is de meerderheid van de Oostenrijkers ongelooflijk racistisch, ondanks hun hoge levensstandaard. Je gelooft je ogen niet als je tijdens een verkiezingsperiode door een Oostenrijkse stad wandelt. De campagneposters staan vol met puur racistische boodschappen. In Groot-Brittannië riskeer je voor dat soort van slogans vervolgd te worden. Je kunt de lijn van extreemrechts van voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog tot nu doortrekken. In de rapporten van Amnesty International bekleedt Oostenrijk een notoire plaats als het op mensenrechtenschendingen door de politie aankomt. Ik vind dat bijzonder schokkend voor een ontwikkelde democratische samenleving. Heel recente rapporten van mensenrechtenorganisaties hebben het over door de politie gearresteerde vreemdelingen die in verdachte omstandigheden overlijden. Die zaken worden nooit onderzocht. Net als de zaak Kampusch en Fritzl worden ze snel onder het tapijt geveegd.

“Oostenrijkers staan zeer wantrouwig tegenover alles wat enigszins afwijkt of vreemd is. Volgens Stefanie Marsh onderneemt Fritzl vanuit de gevangenis verwoede pogingen om in contact te komen met zijn familie. “Hij probeert zijn kinderen te bellen, maar zij willen niet dat hij hen nog lastig valt. Hij trekt zich daar niets van een en lijkt totaal geen berouw of schaamte te voelen. Hij stuurt brieven naar Elizabeth Fritzl en schrijft aan zijn ‘memoires’. Elizabeth leeft ergens anoniem met haar kinderen op het Oostenrijkse platteland. Rosemarie leeft alleen in een flat in de buitenwijken van Linz.

“Fritzl zit tot over zijn oren in de schulden. Hij bezat vijf eigendommen toen hij gearresteerd werd. Hij was juist bezig met een onroerend goedproject. De bank had hem heel wat geld geleend, probeert dat nu terug te recupereren en heeft beslag laten leggen op het gruwelhuis in Amstetten. WORD OF WARNING: There’s a lot of screwed up stuff discussed in this post. Beware.

My good friend Kristen sent me a link to the trailer for an indie horror film called Deadgirl. The film screened at various film festivals in the fall of 2008 and will be released at a limited number of theaters across the US tomorrow. Its concept will make many squeamish: two teenage boys discover a dead girl tied up in the basement of an old insane asylum. They soon realize that the dead girl is, in fact, undead and decide to use her as a sex toy. Play the red band trailer below for a peek:

When Kristen initially sent me the link, I wondered if I would be able to see this movie based solely on the description. Watching the trailer, however, made me reconsider. The film appears substantive in its contemplation of the moral and ethical ramifications of the boys’ actions. Like many rape-revenge narratives of the past, it also looks like the boys face grave consequences for their behavior, with the film illiciting sympathy for the monsterous dead girl a la George Romero. In short, this looks like the most promising horror premise since Teeth. But as with Teeth, I expect that Deadgirl will remain relatively obscure to most moviegoers due to the heavy subject-matter.

What most fascinates me about Deadgirl is the way that it echoes famous real-life instances of sexual violence toward girls. Two cases immediately come to mind: The Fritzl case and the Sylvia Likens case. The Fritzl case occured in Amstetten, Austria, where in April 2008 a 42-year-old woman named Elisabeth Fritzl told police that her father had held her captive for 24 years in a hidden basement chamber. During that time, Elisabeth’s father repeatedly raped her, fathering seven children. Thankfully, Fritzl and her six surviving children (three of whom were raised above-ground by Elisabeth’s parents) currently live at an undisclosed location where they receive pscyhological treatment at the Austrian government’s cost. Fritzl’s father received a life sentence for his crimes.

As a film scholar and horror enthusiast, a case like this drives home the limitations of the film medium to capture the lived experience of a person like Elisabeth Fritzl. Film could never, for instance, replicate the experience of being deprived of daylight for twenty-four years. I count this as a positive since such a possibility would give the medium far more power than I am comfortable with it having. Ultimately, film can inspire sympathy, but will always fall short of evoking empathy in the viewer in cases such as this one.

This inability to fully identify with a character’s pain raises questions both philosophical and political. I am reminded specifically of Elaine Scarry’s study entitled The Body In Pain. Scarry contemplates the vulnerability of the human body and the ways in which those who suffer have a limited ability to articulate their experiences of pain. On the flip side, Scarry points out the inability of individuals to fully empathize with those in pain. The recent discussions about water-boarding in the media demonstrate this disconnect and the political consequences of our inability to understand the physical experience of drowning that results from this method of torture (See Chuck Kleinhans’ essay in Jump Cut for further reading). Similarly, while horror films clearly attempt to evoke pain for the spectator, replication will always be impossible.

What all films, including horror, can do is cultivate sympathies for characters, but how they do this and with whom we are to identify can be ideologically fraught, particularly in representations of true crimes. Specifically, the balancing of sympathies between various characters sometimes requires omitting details that occured during the actual events. For example, the 2007 film An American Crime depicts the true crime story of the torture and murder of Sylvia Likens.

In the fall of 1965, Likens died of a brain hemorrhage, shock, and malnutrition while under the care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a single mother with several children of her own who offered to take care of Likens and her sister Jenny while their parents traveled as carnival workers. After an ambulance was summoned and authorities brought to the scene, Jenny relayed the terrifying details of the events leading to Sylvia’s death. Angry at Sylvia for allegedly spreading rumors about her daughters and stealing from her, Baniszewski physically abused Sylvia. The abuse escalated and Sylvia was eventually locked in the cellar where neighborhood children beat her at Baniszewski’s behest. Baniszewski and one of the neighborhood boys carved the words “I’m a prostitute and proud of it” into Sylvia’s stomach with a hot needle, and, most notoriously, Sylvia was forced to masturbate with a Coke Bottle. An American Crime depicts or implies many of these abuses, as you can see in the trailer below:

While the spectator’s sympathies most clearly lie with Sylvia (played brilliantly by Ellen Page), a humanist approach is taken with regard to the perpetrators. Gertrude (portrayed by the talented Catherine Keener) is presented as asthmatic, overmedicated, and struggling to make ends meet. These details reflect the facts of the case and highlighting them provides insight into Baniszewski’s motivations; however, An American Crime omits some of the more grotesque details of the crime. While there may be many reasons for excising certain events (to avoid sensationalism, to keep the audience engaged with the story, etc.), I believe that one reason may be that such cruelties would jeopardize the audience’s sympathy for Gertrude and her children.

In contrast, the 2007 film The Girl Next Door, based on the Jack Ketchum novel inspired by the Likens case, takes an opposite approach in its characterizing of Sylvia’s torturers. The trailer demonstrates this difference:

Ruth (the character based on Baniszewski) lacks any kind of depth or likability. She serves the neighborhood boys beer, preaches misogyny, and abuses the angelic Meg (based on Sylvia) and her disabled sister Ann (based on Jenny). While An American Crime highlights the sexism inherent in the Likens torture and murder, The Girl Next Door takes this element up to 11 by including a scene of rape and genital mutilation. Ruth also dies at the hands of Davey, the film’s primary protagonist and narrator. As a result, Ruth takes on the qualities of a psychopathic killer who must be murdered to stop her violent rampage.

An American Crime easily tops The Girl Next Door in terms of form, content, and sophistication (in other words, I would NOT recommend the latter film). As Carol Clover points out while discussing Hollywood’s coopting of the rape-revenge subgenre, there is something gained in a broader, more nuanced treatment of violence and its social impact, but there is also something lost. At times, I felt like An American Crime tried too hard to make Baniszewski sympathetic; reading the full details of the case, I couldn’t help but see her in the monstrous light in which she was portrayed in The Girl Next Door. While I am more politically inclined toward the aims of An American Crime and find its version of the events more “true to life,” some emotional needs aren’t served with its approach.

Hence, the three films discussed in this entry differ greatly in their portrayals of those who perpetrate sex crimes against girls. Where all three of these films align is through the use of the basement to examine misogyny. That these sexual crimes take place in this underground space speaks to the hidden nature of such real life crimes. But while sexual assaults may often occur in private, the silence surrounding many of these incidents is what truly keeps these sins under wraps. All of these films grapple with the ways in which a group mentality of agreed secrecy and intentional ignorance enables such terrifying acts. I would argue that Americans perpetuate such blindness about sexual assault by refusing to acknowledge the problem. All three of these films confront these issues head-on, attempting to bring these crimes to light, to pull them out of the cellar and onto the screen.

A Colombian man has appeared in court accused of raping his daughter over many years and fathering several children with her.

The first sentence of the story is all wrong.  What would you define as several?  This is what I found… for interest sake, I define several as 3-5.

Arcebio Alvarez, dubbed the “monster of Mariquita” by the local media, allegedly abused his daughter, now in her 30s, since she was nine years old.

The case has shocked Colombia, and the 59-year-old needed police and army protection for his court appearance.

I am going to go on record and say that that was not really enough.  I know if I was one to defend him and someone came and tried to attack him, I would just push him towards the attacker and wait to see who won.  If Alvarez won, then I would just escort him back to the courtroom.

Mr Alvarez denies incest and rape, saying his daughter was adopted.

“We agreed to have a romantic relationship because we really loved each other. But she was not my own child,” he told the court in the central Tolima province.

It is not clear whether his claim is true, or whether it would affect the charges he faces, but the woman says she always saw him as her father.

“I always respected him as my father and he is my father,” she said.

“He never spoke about [incest], about why we were doing it. Sometimes I would ask him and he would say it was God’s will.”

The woman told police how her mother died when she was five years old, leaving her in the care of Mr Alvarez.

She says she was raped repeatedly and became pregnant 14 times. Eight of her children, aged between one and 19, survived.

That is not several, that is hella times.  Plus, his excuse is weak.  She is not my biological daughter.  Even if that is true, (and boy you are a dumbass if it isn’t true, because haven’t you heard of a little thing called DNA?  Ask Alfie Patten how that one is working out…) she is basically your daughter and is completely, and unequivocally off limits.

In addition to that, you did it 14 times.  Now, that is not just the act 14 times, you got her pregnant 14 times.  How the hell are you paying for all that and the kids? Hint…sniffy, sniffy

First you get the money, then you get the power...

The case has also prompted a movement to change Colombian law, says the BBC’s Jeremy McDermott in Colombia, to ensure that those found guilty of raping children go to prison for life.

That just seems like a common sense law.  There is no reason to put children through the depravity that adults find themselves caught up in.  Sick people need to be treated and until they are, then prison is the most acceptable place for them.

The woman and her children are now under state protection.

Child welfare campaigners have called for a life sentence if he is convicted, saying there are hundreds of thousands of child sexual abuse cases in Colombia not being prosecuted.

Elisabeth bị bố đẻ là Frtizl lừa xuống căn hầm dưới nhà riêng vào năm 1984. Hắn giữ cô ở đó và cưỡng hiếp trong suốt 24 năm. Elisabeth và ba trong số 7 đứa con của cô sống liên tục ở dưới căn hầm bẩn thỉu và ẩm mốc không cửa sổ này cho tới khi vụ việc bị phanh phui tháng 4 năm ngoái, sự kiện gây chấn động cả châu Âu. Ba đứa trẻ khác được Fritzl đưa lên mặt đất và lừa rằng chúng bị mẹ bỏ rơi trước cửa nhà. Một bé đã qua đời chỉ ít lâu sau khi chào đời.

Josef Fritzl bị tòa án Áo tuyên tù chung thân hôm 19/3. Người cha loạn luân thừa nhận các tội danh và tuyên bố sẽ không kháng cáo. Báo chí địa phương hôm qua cho hay y có ý định viết hồi ký trong thời gian ở tù.

Josef for till Thailand och könade av sig och var borta i tre veckor ibland. Tänk om karln hade störtat. Och aldrig kommit hem igen. Då hade dom fått tyna bort där i källaren. Hemska tanke. Barnen Monica, Lisa och Alexander togs om hand från 15 månaders ålder av Rosi och ser naturligtvis henne som mamma. Det blev för trångt där nere i källaren. Men nu ska dom bo med sin mamma och dom andra tre syskonen som aldrig fick komma upp ur källaren. Det går visst inte så bra. Dom tre längtar hem till Rosi. Jag tycker synd om henne. Hon säger att hon inget visste. Det kan vara sant. För hade hon vetat att dotterna var insträngd i källaren så hade hon säkert slagit larm.

Moderskärleken är stark och hon skulle aldrig ha orkat med en kull med ungar till om hon inte hade en stor portion av den varan – moderskärleken alltså. Det är vad jag tro. Men man kan som sagt inte veta. Hon kanske var så rädd för Josef att hon bet ihop och led. Nu sitter Rosi ensam i en lägenhet och lever på en liten pension. Allt har tagits ifrån henne. Nu är hon inte mamma längre – utan bara mormor. Vi får hoppas att hon kan få en fungerande relation till sin dotter Elizabeth och hennes barn. Men jag tro att det kommer att bli mycket svårt. Deras liv är förstörda.

According to AP Writer William J. Kole, long before Josef Fritzl and the horrendous crimes in his dungeon, Austria was maligned by horrors from the past such as its Nazi past, its right-wing politics and another high-profile abduction case.

Austria has always seemed to be in the maelstrom and now that Fritzl has been sentenced to life in a psychiatric ward, a nation wearied and wounded by yet another dark episode seems desperate to move on.

Chancellor Werner Faymann said Friday of Fritzl’s four-day trial, “We are glad it ended so quickly.”

The Chancellor was stern and unwavering.  To those who portrayed the 73-year-old Fritzl as the monstrous product of a country blemished by its complicity with the Nazis, Faymann had a stern message, “We will always defend ourselves against general prejudices and historical circumstances,” he said.  It isn’t always easy to distance yourself from your past, no matter how much you defend yourself against what you may call “historical circumstances.”

Josef Fritzl was convicted of homicide, rape, incest and other charges Thursday. Whether he receive just punishement is another matter, but he was sentenced to life in a psychiatric ward for enslaving his daughter Elisabeth, raping her more than 3,000 times over 24 years, fathering her seven children, and letting a newborn son die in captivity.

Other peole in Austria like Josef Leitner, who rented a room in the same house in Amstetten where Fritzl built his basement prison, want to put it all behind them.

He said, “On the day I heard what happened to Elisabeth, my breath stood still. Today I can breathe normally for the first time again.”

The media feeding frenzy began soon after the news first broke. Many Austrians were scandalized by foreign media coverage of the case. Of course, British tabloids and other newspapers ran salacious headlines about Fritzl’s crimes in the “Nazi nation,” putting many Austrians on the defensive.

It is a know fact that Adolph Hitler was born in Austria and annexed the country in 1938. It is true that Austrians have made big strides in acknowledging their nation’s role in Nazi-era war crimes and the Holocaust, but it remains a sore spot.

“Vicious attack on our Austria!” the newspaper Heute wrote in a front-page headline this week. “Half the world is aiming at us.”

To be sure, there are reasons why the world sees more than Alpine meadows and Mozart sonatas when it sizes up Austria.

The Fritzl case broke less than two years after the dramatic escape of Natascha Kampusch, who had been confined to a windowless underground cell for more than 8 1/2 years.

Kampusch was a freckle-faced 10-year-old walking to school when Wolfgang Priklopil seized her off a Vienna street and imprisoned her in the cell he had built beneath his suburban home.

She escaped in August 2006, and Priklopil committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train.

Around the world, people mindful of the Kampusch case struggled to make sense of the revelations about Fritzl, and some couldn’t help wondering if something was wrong with Austria.

Then there is Austria’s politics. The late President Kurt Waldheim, who served as U.N. chief from 1972-81, was barred for two decades from entering the U.S. after it became known he had belonged to a German army unit that committed atrocities in World War II.

More recently, far-right leader Joerg Haider, who died last year in a car crash, was the country’s best-known politician – for all the wrong reasons.

Haider praised aspects of Hitler’s labor policies and made statements that sounded anti-Semitic. When his right-wing Freedom Party won 27 percent of the vote in 1999 elections and joined Austria’s coalition government early in 2000, the European Union slapped the country with months of diplomatic sanctions.

When the details of the Fritzl case became known, he became a household name and a symbol – however unwanted – of his homeland virtually overnight. The four-day trial this week drew more than 200 journalists, including some from Brazil, Russia and the United States.

“We are not prosecuting a town or an entire country,” judge Andrea Humer said in St. Poelten, west of Vienna, where the trial was held.

A few Austrians took it in stride, flashing a bit of the nation’s sardonic and self-deprecating humor. Restaurants in St. Poelten served up “Fritzl schnitzel” until city hall apparently convinced them that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea.

Only the passage of time will help erase what happened in people’s memories, said Leitner, the former Fritzl tenant.

“People say that time heals all wounds, but for sure it will take a while,” he said. “The media will pull back, everything will calm down slowly here in Amstetten, and I hope we will return to everyday life soon.”

At TicosLand.com in Costa Rica, we have refrained from delving into the feeding frenzy.  We feel that enough has already been done to the Fritzl family.  However, this is relevant news and we wanted to keep our readers informed.

“I regret from the bottom of my heart what I have done to my family. Unfortunately, I cannot make amends for it. I can only try to look for possibilities to try to limit the damage that’s been done.”

Those were the last words spoken by Josef Fritzl before the court at St Pölten passed judgment on him. They found him guilty on all 6 counts: rape, deprivation of liberty, incest, coercion, slavery and murder. His punishment: Life imprisonment.

Court representatives said Fritzl appeared ‘composed‘ as his sentence was read out. He immediately accepted the sentence, as did the prosecution, meaning that it is legally binding and ruling out any right of appeal.

Fritzl’s defense lawyer, Rudolf Mayer, confirmed that Elisabeth had been present for part of the trial.

‘This is what triggered the agitation that led him to confess,’ Mayer told German N-TV news channel, referring to his client’s surprising change of heart.

The life sentence would entail a minimum of 15 years in prison, according to Franz Cutka, vice president of St Pölten courts. The 11 months he has already spent incarcerated would count towards that sentence. On the advice of Adelheid Kastner, the forensic psychiatrist who spent 25 hours evaluating Fritzl’s mental health, he will first be sent to the Mittersteig prison in Vienna for an evaluation. Afterward, Fritzl may then be transferred to another prison or psychiatric institution. Kastner told the jury that locking him up without therapy and treatment could be dangerous, and that there was a real risk he would try to take his own life. She also said that Fritzl had a serious personality disorder and would pose a threat to others if freed. He remains under a suicide watch.

“He has the right to voice an opinion on where he should be sent, but this wish has to tally with any expert opinion and with the directorate of the prison,” said Huber-Günsthofer the deputy director of St Pölten prison, where Fritzl has been held since his arrest last April.

There was never really any doubt of Fritzl’s guilt, even his lawyer, Rudolf  Mayer, admitted that Fritzl had raped his daughter 3,000 times, but his fate was sealed when Fritzl changed his plea to guilty on all counts, including the “murder by neglect” of his infant son, Michael. This was the most serious charge against him and it was this charge that earned him the life sentence.

“The life sentence was a consequence of his confession,” Mayer told reporters after the jury’s decision. “After confessing to 3,000 instances of rapes, 24 years of captivity in a cellar, plus murder, it’s obvious that such a sentence will be handed down.”

At a news conference after the verdict, court officials said Elisabeth could bring a separate civil case against Fritzl to seek damages for her suffering, adding there was no limit to what she could request. They said the Austrian government would join in on bankruptcy proceedings that Fritzl recently initiated, and said the process could involve selling his seven real estate holdings — including the house in Amstetten where he held his daughter. They also said Fritzl would have to secure permission from Austria’s Justice Ministry if he wanted to write and sell his memoirs.

Amstetten’s mayor verbalized the unspoken thoughts of the people of his town – and perhaps for most Austrians – who for almost a year came under the intense attention of the entire world when he said:

‘A dark chapter in the history of our town is now closed,’ said Amstetten Mayor Herbert Katzengruber after the guilty verdict was announced. ‘We all hoped it would turn out this way.’

Fritzl sentenced to life in psychiatric facility

An Austrian man who fathered seven children by his daughter, whom he locked in a cellar for 24 years, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a psychiatric institution. The jury found 73-year-old Joseph Fritzl guilty of all charges against him, including enslavement, rape, incest, false imprisonment, coercion and negligent homicide. The murder charge referred to the death of one of the children he had with his daughter. Fritzl’s lawyer said he found the verdict fair. The trial lasted just four days. On Wednesday, Fritzl changed his plea to guilty on all charges after watching video taped evidence from his daughter.

This doesn’t make mention of the fact that the rumor mill is gossiping about Elisabeth coming and watching two days of the trial. Josef managed to stay strong during that part, but coming face to face with the victim, caused him to change his mind. Or, the bastard just really saw the writing on the wall and went for the sympathy plea. Austrian law is not that harsh in terms of meting punishment out to those who deserve it.

The worse part about it for Josef is that if he would have taken this plea earlier to spare the pain of the trial, that he would have been able to serve in a low security country club style prison. Now he will have to serve here…

MOSCOW, March 19 (RIA Novosti) – A high-security jail in Lower Austria is likely to be home to the country’s two most famous criminals, following Thursday’s conviction of Joseph Fritzl for murder, rape, incest and slavery.

A jury in the town of Sankt Poelten unanimously found the 73-year-old Austrian engineer guilty of murdering one of the seven children he fathered with his daughter Elizabeth, who he kept locked up in a dungeon below his garden for 24 years, raping her repeatedly. The court ordered a life sentence.

Austrian media said Fritzl is likely to be placed in the Goellersdorf asylum, home to the infamous Robert Ackermann, nicknamed the Cannibal of Vienna.

Ackerman was convicted in 2007 at the age of 19 of murdering his roommate Josef Schweiger in a mental asylum, and eating his brain. According to eyewitnesses, Ackerman would prowl the grounds naked at night, howling at the moon.

According to national media, Ackerman has openly boasted of plans cook Fritzl alive.

I found video or what he plans to do.  This is not for the squeamish.  It is safe for work, unless you are having lunch.

Under Austrian law, if Fritzl is convicted on several offenses, he will be given the sentence linked to the worst crime. The charges he faces are:

• Murder: The infant who died in 1996 died from a lack of medical care, the state prosecutor said. The charge carries a sentence of life in prison.

• Involvement in slave trade: From 1984 until 2008, prosecutors allege, Fritzl held his daughter, Elisabeth, captive in a dungeon, abused her sexually and treated her as if she were his personal property — in a situation similar to slavery. If he is convicted, the sentence could range from 10 to 20 years in prison.

• Rape: Between August 30, 1984, and June 30, 1989, Fritzl “regularly sexually abused Elisabeth,” according to the prosecutor. The sentence could be from five to 15 years in prison.

• Incest: Parallel to the rape charge. It carries a sentence of up to one year.

• Withdrawal of liberty: Three of the children Fritzl had with Elisabeth were illegally held captive in a dungeon with no daylight or fresh air, according to prosecutors. That charge carries a sentence of one to 10 years.

• Assault: Between August 28, 1984, and April 26, 2006, Fritzl repeatedly threatened Elisabeth and their three children with gas and booby traps as warnings in case they tried to escape, authorities allege. The sentence would range from six months to five years.

He is clearly going to get what he deserves.  Even criminals have a little decency. (some of them and it aint much…)

“I recognize that I am guilty of all the charges presented,” he said. “I regret what I’ve done.” With those words, Josef Fritzl ended any further reason to continue with his trial. He uttered those words in front of  judge Andrea Humer at the beginning of the third day of his trial. Asked what had made him change his mind so suddenly, and prompted him to admit to the charges of murder and slavery that he had previously rejected, Fritzl said: “Because of the video testimony of my daughter.”

Under questioning by judge Andrea Humer with regards to the murder charge, Fritzl admitted that he was present when the twins were born and confessed he knew Michael had breathing problems. Baby Michael lived for 66 hours and Judge Humer told Fritzl that was more than enough time to see there was a severe health problem and seek medical help.

“I don’t know why I did not help. I was hoping he would get through it,” Fritzl told the hushed courtroom at Sankt Poelten, Austria. “I should have done something. I simply failed to do so. I was of the opinion the little one would survive.”

Before pleading guilty to all six charges against him: rape, deprivation of liberty, incest, coercion, slavery and murder Josef Fritzl did not even bother to inform his lawyer, Rudolf Mayer, but he did request to see a psychiatrist after leaving court the evening before.

“He asked to see a psychiatrist afterwards, so crushed was he. The testimony which he saw for the first time had a profoundly devastating effect on him and led to the change of direction in this trial.”

Rudolf Mayer’s client had not informed him in advance of his decision to plead guilty, he said:

“I was indeed surprised, not least because someone with such a personality disorder as he has – which involves keeping up appearances and giving the impression that he’s the one with the power – finds it difficult to drop his trousers in front of the world.”

Until his confession, Fritzl had stubbornly refused to admit that he had caused Elisabeth much suffering, arguing instead that he had saved her from a life of ruin and debauchery when he lured her into the cellar at the age of 18.

Fritzl will face a sentence of between 20 years and life imprisonment. But it is possible that his confession will lead to a reduced sentence. “It all depends on whether the jury and the judges take the confession to be a mitigating circumstance,” said the vice-president of the court, Franz Cutka. The verdict and sentencing are expected in tomorrow’s session.

Fritzl is on a suicide watch, meaning at the end of each day’s court sessions guards remove his tie and belt to ensure he cannot use them to harm himself. There were unconfirmed reports that Elisabeth was in court and that Fritzl made eye contact with her the day before he changed his plea. The pair had not met since Fritzl’s reign of terror was exposed and he was arrested last April at his home in Amstetten.

At the opening of the trial, prosecutor Christiane Burkheiser said: “For the first few years, when he went into the cellar, he would rape her but he would never speak to her.

“It was always the same routine. He came, he raped her, he left.”

Before his hideously silent attacks, Fritzl turned off the lights in the dank cellar in which he imprisoned daughter Elisabeth for 24 years.

When he was done, he switched them on again.

Why do you think that he wanted the lights off?  Could he not stand himself and the act that he was doing?  I thought maybe, but he took some of his kids and allowed them to live above ground with him and his wife. I normally bang on her for not knowing, but he has some sort of mind control over women or something…

Stunned jurors also heard how Fritzl threw drugged Elisabeth into the underground prison beneath the family home in Amstetten, Austria, when she was just 18. And he:

RAPED her in front of the captive children he fathered through her.

Not shocking if you could bring yourself to rape your child.  Why would he care if the other children who he kept as hostages watched?  It gave him a sick thrill probably to think about being in a porno

ALLOWED one of the children to die two days after birth rather than risk exposing his secret by seeking medical help.

Again, not shocking.  how can you develop an attachment to someone if you are busy raping their mother?  He callously threw the remains in the furnace to burn any evidence.

TETHERED Elisabeth with an iron chain around her waist, restricting her movements even further in a room measuring only 18 square metres.

SEXUALLY abused her — sometimes several times a day — and forced her to re-enact pornographic scenes with him.

EXERCISED total control over her, treating her like a piece of property to do with as he liked.

KEPT her in check with beatings, kickings and gaggings.

CONVINCED his terrified captives he had booby-trapped the dungeon to gas or electrocute them if they ever tried to escape his clutches.

PUNISHED them by turning off all power, leaving them in the dark, mouldy dungeon — which was frequently infested with rats, and

BEGAN molesting Elisabeth when she was 11, then waited seven years before raping her for the first time two days after he imprisoned her.

Fritzl, 73, sat stony-faced in court at St Poelten as Ms Burkheiser outlined the full scale of the ordeal he inflicted on Elisabeth, now 43.

How must she feel to hear the horrors all over again.  I know that she must be thinking or hoping that he got raped in prison.

Furnace

He also imprisoned three of the children he had through his daughter — Kerstin, now 20, Stefan, 18, and Felix, six.

They never saw daylight until they were rescued in April last year.

The children’s siblings Lisa, 16, Monika, 14, and Alexander, 12, were taken above ground by Fritzl to be raised by him and wife Rosemarie.

Alexander’s twin Michael died two days after being born and was cremated by Fritzl in the cellar’s furnace, the jury heard.

Ms Burkheiser said: “Elisabeth could see from the start that Michael could not breathe. He was blue and struggled throughout his short life.”

The trial began after Fritzl shuffled in silence 300 yards from his jail cell to the court.

Once inside, his lawyer asked him if he was all right — and he replied: “I’m scared.” Fritzl, who added two rooms and a shower to the cellar in 1993, was ringed by armed cops.

Everyone has a right to a fair trial.  Even monsters.  but, you should be afraid, because you know that people are out for your blood.  In addition to the people on the outside, the people in the jails want to show you what it is like to be a sex slave.  (Hint, rape and kill you American Me style)

He held a blue file over his face to hide from photographers.

Fittingly, Fritzl’s last meal before his court appearance was a local pork chop dish named Devil’s Cutlet.

The beast admits incest and false imprisonment.

He pleads “partly guilty” to 3,000 rapes and coercion. But he denies murdering Michael and a charge of slavery.

Ms Burkheiser told how Elisabeth was broken by the random nature of Fritzl’s “visits”.

She said: “The worst thing of all was the uncertainty. When would he come? When would he go? How long would he stay? Would he come back from his holidays at all?

“The uncertainty breaks a person — not the rapes or the appalling conditions or the lack of proper food and medicines.”

I am going to interject here for a minute and say that the rapes and beatings do break a person down psychologically as well…

Ms Burkheiser told how Elisabeth gave birth for the first time “in a damp cellar on a dirty blanket”.

Fritzl’s only warped concession was to give her a book about childbirth two months before.

The prosecutor went on to tell jurors two versions of events — Fritzl’s and the squalor his fearful victims endured. She said:

He claims he cared for his family, he was respectable and an upstanding member of the community.

The fact is he took his daughter Elisabeth downstairs on the pretext he needed help moving a door — and he drugged her and dragged her into the cellar, where he tied her up.

On the second day he put a noose around her waist which severely restricted her freedom even in the small room in which she was confined.

How big was that room? It was 18 square metres, where she spent the next nine years. It is virtually the same size as the jury box in which you sit.

At least for you Joe F., the cell that you are going to be in the rest of your natural born life is bigger than what he kept his daughter in.

There was a washbasin but no bath or shower. There was no heating. No fresh air. Just walls to look at and a door. I have been there twice. It is dark and damp and the smell is unbearable.

Josef Fritzl had complete control of this cellar. He decided what food would be allowed down and when it would be eaten. He decided what medicines would be allowed.

Often the electricity would fail for hours at a time, sometimes for up to ten days.

There was no torch and no candles. With no electricity they had no hot water and no warm food. Even though there were babies to feed there was no light to do it by.

He told Elisabeth there was an electric door which would kill anybody that broke the light barrier surrounding it.

And if the light barrier was broken there was gas that would flood into the room, killing everybody. But he did not need to bother — because she was a broken woman.

I bet governments are taking notes right now on how to break someone down, as Joseph seems to be the champ at it…

Fritzl’s lawyer Rudolf Mayer insisted he was a misunderstood family man wrongly portrayed as a monster.

Mr Mayer said: “He is a man who wanted a second family and wanted to care for that second family. If it was just rape, sexual pleasure, then he wouldn’t have wanted children. He could have used contraception.

“And if he was a man who didn’t care about children he could have disposed of them.

“But this is a man who slept in the cellar with his children and spent time with them over the Christmas period.

“He could have killed his daughter and everybody else and enjoyed the rest of his life as a respectable man.”

The hearing later went behind closed doors — but not before Fritzl spoke to describe key moments in his life. He told of a difficult childhood because he was unwanted — and of being beaten by his mother.

Fritzl added that he married Rosemarie — then 17 — in 1956 because she had agreed to have the big family he craved.

He said: “I wanted at least ten children. When she said she wanted at least ten children as well, then I married her.”

yesterday and apparently one day prior, a video testimony from elisabeth fritzl and her brother was given in front of a jury. today, josef fritzl, the man who cried about his lost childhood, confessed to the charges.

Josef Fritzl’s trial is in its second day. On the first day he pleaded guilty to: Incest, Coercion, Rape and Deprivation of liberty. He pleaded not guilty to: Murder and Enslavement. The second day of the trial that has been dubbed Austria’s Trial of the Century began about 9:00 am with Josef Fritzl once again entering court holding a blue folder in front of his face, and holding it up for 10 minutes until cameramen were ordered to leave the courtroom. This time however a photographer was able to take some still pictures of him during his appearance.

This day was not about Josef Fritzl; it was about Elisabeth. It was about how she suffered at the hands of the man who held her captive for 24 years during which she bore him 7 children. It was the day that Josef Fritzl came face to face with the crimes he had committed. It was the day that Elisabeth Fritzl became an avenging angel. During 11 hours of recorded testimony she told the court and the world who her father really was – a rapist, a murderer and a monster who allowed one of their children, Michael, to die without trying to help.

For a man who had been accustomed to being in control, it was his day of reckoning. Fritzl watched the tape, that could very well send him to prison for life, with full attention. As Elisabeth recounted her litany of humiliations, the tape was stopped and Fritzl was cross-questioned. The main aim of the proceedings was to address the most serious charge against Fritzl, that of murdering one of the seven babies fathered in the mouldy fetid cellar of his sprawling house in Amstetten.

Michael, the first born twin, was in trouble. “The accused could see that Michael’s situation was getting worse,” says the charge sheet, “Fritzl was fully aware of this. Instead of calling for emergency medical care for the newborn and securing help for the baby, Fritzl simply told Elisabeth ‘what will be, will be’”.

The baby died two days later. Fritzl is said to have burned the body in a stove in the cellar. Fritzl denies being in the cellar at the time of death, and considers himself not guilty of “murder by neglect”. Elisabeth’s version — which forms the basis of the indictment — was clearly essential.

The taped testimonial provided the basic material for the indictment which describes a history of sexual abuse from the age of 11. Elisabeth recorded her testimony last summer, three months after her release from the cellar of the family home. The memories of her ordeal were still fresh and state prosecutor, Christiane Burkheiser, remembers the occasion — the taping was held over several days, in the presence of psychiatrists and Fritzl’s defense lawyer Rudolf Mayer — as being particularly grueling.

“This was much more emotionally difficult than questioning Mr Fritzl,” said the 33-year-old state prosecutor in an interview.

The taped testimony had been introduced to spare Elisabeth the need to be in the same room as her father, she vows that she never wants to see him again. She tells how she had to give in to her father’s daily demands for violent sex because she knew he had the power of life and death over her. She described how her father not only raped her thousands of times but humiliated her by forcing her to re-enact scenes from pornographic films he made her watch.

The sexual abuse often took place in front of the three children who grew up in the cellar. She described how Fritzl would bring boxes of pornographic videos into the cellar, where he had set up a TV and video recorder, then order his daughter to re-enact scenes with him. Elisabeth gave her evidence looking straight into a camera with no-one else in the room, while lawyers asked her questions from neighboring rooms.

In addition to her testimony, another recording was made by her brother, Harald, in whom she was said to confide. His testimony was also played for the court. He was the only other family member who was willing to testify against Fritzl. The jury also listened to a statement from a neonatal specialist who testified on whether Michael’s death was preventable.

Josef Fritzl has been put on a suicide watch. He is being accompanied by a doctor to whom he had access during breaks in the trial, part of routine psychological and “suicide prevention measures“, said Erich Huber-Guensthofer, deputy director of Sankt Poelten prison, where the defendant is being held. The prosecution has requested that Fritzl be placed in a psychiatric institution after the trial.

Prior to these alleged crimes, Fritzl had been arrested three times in connection with sex offenses — he was never charged in the cases of attempted rape and public exposure, but he served a sentence for a rape conviction in the late 1960s. As well as the possible life sentence for murder, Fritzl faces 20 years behind bars if found guilty of enslavement, up to 15 for a rape conviction, and one year for an incest conviction. The trial continues tomorrow.

Cơn ác mộng bắt đầu

Công tố viên Christiane Burkheiser cho biết vào ngày 29/8/1984, Fritzl yêu cầu con gái Elisabeth, khi đó mới 18 tuổi, xuống hầm nhà để giúp y mang một chiếc cửa lên gara.

Tuy nhiên, khi Elisabeth xuống đến nơi, y trùm chiếc khăn có tẩm ête lên mặt, khiến cô ngất xỉu. Y sau đó kéo lê Elisabeth vào căn hầm mà y đã chuẩn bị hàng tháng trước đó.

“Y đưa con gái xuống tầng hầm, viện lý do cần người giúp di chuyển một chiếc cửa, sau đó đánh thuốc mê và kéo lê Elisabeth. Tại đây, y dùng dây trói cô. Sang ngày thứ hai, kẻ loạn luân tiếp tục lấy thòng lọng quấn quanh eo của Elisabeth, siết chặt cô ngay trong chính căn phòng cô đang bị nhốt”, công tố viên Burkheiser nói.

Cưỡng đoạt con gái hàng ngày

Kẻ loạn luân chiếm đoạt con gái ngay trong ngày thứ hai cô bị nhốt dưới hầm và lặp lại hành động này hàng ngày suốt nhiều năm.

“Những năm đầu, không hề có lời nào được nói giữa Josef Fritzl và con gái. Y đến, chiếm đoạt cô rồi bỏ đi”, công tố viên Burkheiser cho biết. Sau này khi những đứa con chung lần lượt chào đời, y tiếp tục cưỡng hiếp cô ngay trước mặt các con.

Theo các tài liệu được công bố trên tòa, Elisabeth bị lạm dụng tình dục và thân thể cho đến ngày được trả tự do vào năm 2008.

Cuộc sống nô lệ trong căn hầm đầy chuột

Trong ngày xét xử đầu, công tố viên miêu tả chi tiết điều kiện sống khắc khổ dưới căn hầm nhỏ, nơi Elisabeth và các con phải sống hàng chục năm.

“Không có lò sưởi hay không khí trong lành. Xung quanh chỉ có các bức tường và một cái cửa sổ. Tôi từng xuống đó hai lần. Dưới đó thật tối tăm, ẩm thấp và nặng mùi. Thường điện hay mất khoảng vài tiếng thậm chí lâu hơn. Đôi lúc họ không có điện trong 10 ngày. Không hề có ánh sáng, đèn chiếu hay nến. Khi không có điện, họ cũng mất luôn nước và không thể làm các món ăn nóng”, công tố viên cho hay.

Điều kiện ẩm thấp khiến mốc phát triển trên tường và căn hầm chứa đầy chuột.

Năm 1993, Fritzl mở rộng thêm hai phòng và trang bị lò sưởi, tủ lạch, vòi tắm.

Bảy lần vượt cạn trong hầm

Trong bảy lần vượt cạn, Elisabeth không được trợ giúp gì về mặt y tế và cũng không có thuốc giảm đau. Cô thậm chí bị bỏ rơi hoàn toàn khi sinh con đầu lòng Kerstin vào ngày 30/8/1988.

“Elisabeth vượt cạn trong hầm trên một chiếc chăn bẩn”, bà Burkheiser cho biết và nói thêm Elisabeth chỉ được cho một quyển sách về sinh nở trước đó hai tháng. Đến phút cuối, cô được thêm một chiếc chăn. Những dụng cụ duy nhất mà cô có là kéo và mấy chiếc tã. 10 ngày sau khi cô sinh, Fritzl mới đến thăm con.

“Ông ta là một kẻ thống trị hoàn toàn. Fritzl có thể quyết định việc sẽ ăn gì, khi nào cũng như loại thuốc nào sẽ được đưa xuống hầm. Ông ta không cho họ cơ hội được chăm sóc y tế đầy đủ, mà chỉ có aspirin và thuốc ho”, bà Burkheiser nói.

Đứa trẻ thứ hai, Stefan, sinh năm 1990, tiếp theo là Lisa vào năm 1992 và Monika năm 1994. Cặp song sinh Alexander và Michael chào đời năm 1996 và Felix sinh năm 2002. Fritzl chỉ có mặt tại hai trong số những lần vượt cạn này.

Khi Lisa chào đời, căn hầm trở nên quá chật chội khiến Fritzl quyết định chuyển một số em lên nhà. Y ép Elisabeth viết một bức thư, trong đó cô nói sẽ không chăm sóc các con rồi giả vờ bỏ lại chúng trước cửa nhà. Bằng cách này, Fritzl đưa được Lisa, Monika và Alexander lên sống cùng y và vợ.

Cáo buộc giết người

Ngày 28/4/1996, Elisabeth sinh hai con trai, Alexander và Michael. Fritzl có mặt trong lần vượt cạn này nhưng mọi chuyện bắt đầu phức tạp khi Michael bị khó thở.

“Ngay từ đầu, Elisabeth đã biết cậu bé Michael không thể thở được. Em bị tím tái. Nhưng Fritzl không làm gì giúp đứa trẻ”, công tố viên Burkheiser nói.

Michael qua đời ngày 1/5/1996. Ngày hôm sau, Fritzl tự tay thiêu xác con trong lò và rắc tro lên vườn nhà.

Chiếc hầm nguy hiểm

Fritzl liên tục nhắc nhở các tù nhân rằng căn hầm được đặt bẫy với khí gas và điện cao thế. Họ có thể chết nếu tìm cách trốn.

Bà Burkheiser cho biết Fritzl đe dọa nếu căn hầm bị phá, khí gas sẽ tràn vào trong và giết chết mọi người. Để thoát khỏi đây, Elisabeth cũng sẽ phải vượt qua ba lớp cửa khóa.

Tuy nhiên, khi giới chức kiểm tra nơi này thì không hề có chiếc bẫy nào như lời y nói.

Ác mộng chấm dứt

Khi con gái đầu lòng Kerstin ốm nặng vào tháng 4/2008, lần đầu tiên Fritzl tỏ lòng nhân từ. Y đưa em đến bệnh viện.

Các bác sĩ không thể xác định nguyên nhân căn bệnh của em. Do vậy, họ kêu gọi mẹ của cô bé đến bệnh viện. Cuối cùng, Fritzl cho phép Elisabeth ra ngoài lần đầu sau 24 năm.

Ban đầu người mẹ 42 tuổi không hé răng nửa lời, do lo ngại cho tính mạng của những đứa con trong hầm. Tuy nhiên đến ngày 26/4/2008, Elisabeth đã có đủ can đảm để kể sự thật cho cảnh sát.

Hành trình thành ác quỷ

Fritzl từng cáo buộc rằng chính mẹ đẻ khiến y trở thành quỷ. Y là con một và chào đời ngày 9/4/1935 ở thị trấn Amstetten. Y cho biết người mẹ độc thân không hề muốn có y và thường đánh đập y.

“Tôi có một tuổi thơ khó khăn. Nhưng từ năm 12 tuổi, tôi bắt đầu chống lại mẹ và kể từ đó tôi là quỷ Satan trong mắt bà. Giữa chúng tôi không có mối quan hệ ruột rà thân thiết. Bà qua đời năm 1980 khi vẫn sống cùng tôi”, y nói.

Fritzl cưới vợ Rosemarie vào năm 1956, lúc bà 17 tuổi còn ông ta 21. Họ có bảy người con chung, trong đó Elisabeth là thứ tư.

Phiên tòa xử Fritzl vẫn đang tiếp diễn. Dự kiến thẩm phán sẽ tuyên án vào ngày 21/3 tới.
