The rehearsals are still going on and Cheryl is rehearsing with Jason Alexander in the diner. Everyone things Cheryl is doing great, especially Larry. The two ex’s are starting to hit it off again and make plans to get together later that night at Cheryl’s house after the party that Julia is throwing for Jason Alexander’s new book, “Acting Without Acting.” As Larry is leaving he see’s Mocha Joe, the lot coffee guy who Larry asks for a favor. At the party Jerry Seinfeld tells Larry that Mocha Joe was a little upset that Larry didn’t tip him. At that point Julie Louis-Dryfus pulls Larry aside and asks him if he left a ring on her table. Larry proclaims his innocence, but Julia isn’t buying it. Larry spots Mocha Joe outside and confronts him about what he was just told by Jerry. In order to make it even Larry agrees to do a favor for him, going to pick up his coffee beans in West Hollywood.

Larry get’s stuck in traffic and is going to be late to Cheryl’s so she cancels. Larry was also late picking up the beans and the place is closed. The next morning Larry finds out that Cheryl had Jason Alexander over in his place, and starts to get jealous of the time they are spending together. This obviously is the beginning of the end. Larry does all he can to catch the two of them together just to confirm his suspicions. At the same time he’s looking for who really left the ring on Julia’s coffee table. At one point Larry even catches Jason in Cheryl’s dressing room, but Jason escapes through the bathroom window before Larry can confront him. Larry tells Cheryl, “You’re not attracted to him, you’re attracted to George! I’m George!” In the end Larry ends up writing a new script for the show that gives Cheryl and Jason less screen time together. This outrages everyone and Jason quits. Larry offers to play the part since it is based on him anyway, and it doesn’t go so well. For the betterment of the show Larry quits. He tells Jeff (at least I assume it was Jeff on the other end of the phone) that since he did this all to get Cheryl back and that didn’t happen he decided to quit.

Larry is sitting at home watching the show as it airs, and he seems happy. When Cheryl is supposed to come on screen Larry is shocked to find out that Virgina (played by Elizabeth Shue) is playing the part. At that point the doorbell rings and it’s Cheryl holding some Mocha Joe’s coffee. The two make up and Larry might have also discovered who left the ring on the table.

Like I said it was a great way to end. No one is really sure if the show is coming back or not. Larry David is mum on the thought of a 7th season, and HBO hasn’t said anything either. I personally hope it comes back, but if it doesn’t it’s nice that Larry ends on a high note for once.

Thoughts and Observations:

“Act without Acting.” Brilliant. It’s almost as if they were summing up Jerry Seinfeld’s acting style.

“I respect wood. I revere wood!”

Jerry explaining why Larry can’t play George, “He’s an icon. She’s an icon. He was an icon. [points to self] Icon. [points to Larry] No-con!”

It would have been great if Leon showed up in the final episode. He was underutilized this season. I love Leon.

Was it cruel that Jason Alexander left his dogs in the hot car all day long?

I really didn’t think the finale was that bad, but boy they kept bringing up how bad the cast thought it was. That’s the problem with things like finales, they will never be as amazing as you want them to be.

Jerry and Larry really are just the same. Jerry Seinfeld could have played Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm and it might have been just as good. The scene where Jerry gives Larry Larry’s stare to tell if he was lying was great, and dead on. Jerry even describes them as “twins in the womb.”

Michael Richards really was under utilized in this episode, and maybe all season. I hope this helps vindicate him after the trouble he got into.

We got to see almost 15 minutes of the fake Seinfeld Reunion show on Larry’s TV. It really was great. For a while there I thought we would see the whole episode.

I complained a bit about the whole seaosn being a little far fetched, but I really did love it. It was great seeing the whole cast back together again for the first time on TV. This really was almost as good as a real Seinfeld reunion and in someways maybe it was better.

Voicemail message from my father, approximately 5 p.m., as New England took a 21-0 lead: “Why

Voicemail message from my father, approximately 5 p.m., as New England took a 21-0 lead:

“Why don’t you leave the bar, go home, talk to your wife, have a nice dinner, anything else but watching this.”

The man is a fountain of wisdom. I was sitting at Houligan’s, having just finished off a nice pulled pork sandwich (Mmm, pulled pork), and I was watching the Patriots systematically take apart the New York Jets.

The Pats ran on the Jets. They threw on the Jets. They stuffed everything the Jets tried to do on offense. They completely befuddled and confused Mark Sanchez (more on him in a minute).

So, I left. It’s not the first time I left a Jets game, and it won’t be the last.

Course, I get home, and I check the score, and it’s 24-14, so I start watching again, and of course they never got any closer and lost, 31-14.

Very few positives to talk about in this game, so let’s deal with the negatives, shall we?

– This defense is not only not good, not only can’t they tackle well, but they can’t cover a bedspread right now. What happened to Kerry Rhodes? Guy used to be great. Bart Scott, anytime you want to earn that contract, go right ahead. The pass rush was OK, but never there when it was needed.

– How does the Jets coaching staff come out SO woefully unprepared for the first half? They got outgained 273-34. That’s insane.

– I know Mark Sanchez is a rookie. And I do have faith that he’ll be a good quarterback one day. But man oh man, the kid keeps making the SAME mistakes over and over. Trying to throw into triple coverage. Throwing off the wrong foot. I just get worried that he doesn’t seem to be making any progress here. But I don’t want to bench him. Look, Peyton Manning was awful as a rookie, too.

– Four and six wouldn’t feel so bad if they hadn’t started 3 and 0.

Some more Monday NFL thoughts:

– I know this will never happen, but let a sports fan dream for a minute: Indianapolis is 10-0. New Orleans is 10-0. Wouldn’t it be incredible if they met in the Super Bowl, after BOTH having gone 16-0? I think the Internet might explode if that happened.

– Two more reasons I never, ever wager on NFL games individually: Kansas City 27, Pittsburgh 24. Oakland 20, Cincinnati 17.

– I think Jack Kent Cooke and Tom Landry were spinning wildly in their graves Sunday, as the Cowboys and Redskins combined to play one awful football game. I knew it was bad when the Cowboys fan sitting near me whooped at one point, really loudly. What happened, I asked. Skins missed a field goal!, he exclaimed.

–Who’s that guy in the picture above, you ask? Daytona Beach’s own Eric Weems, now an Atlanta Falcon. He caught at TD pass Sunday against the Giants. He’s a great kid; I’ve interviewed him a few times and he just never put on the attitude some guys have. He’s a great story; 5-foot-9, undrafted out of Bethune-Cookman University, makes the Atlanta practice squad for a few years, and now finally is getting his shot. Good stuff.

Finally, the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” season finale aired Sunday night. It was pretty funny, especially the stuff when Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David were just riffing off each other. I also loved that they finally addressed the whole “George Costanza really is just Larry David” thing; that was always out there but never talked about.

Last week’s episode was still this season’s masterpiece, the equivalent of “Crazy Eyez Killah” and “The Producers” episodes from years past.

Anyway, good to see Cheryl back, and the still-pretty Elisabeth Shue, too.

For you “Curb” fans, here’s a little best of video I found on YouTube.

#15 A Fish Called Wanda v. #18 Adventures in Babysitting

As great as the dialogue is, it’s the subtle boob grab at the end of Otto’s initial meeting with Ken that foreshadows just how extensive the comedy is in the 1988 classic, A Fish Called Wanda. The film was both a commercial and critical success, earning Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, while Kevin Kline took home an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Rare air for a comedy.

But Academy Awards don’t mean anything when matched up against a movie like Adventures in Babysitting. Made one year earlier and earning about half as much at the box office as Fish, Adventures in Babysitting was never going to be confused with an Oscar-caliber film. But it has stood the test of time so much that a 2011 sequel is in the works. Unfortunately, the sequel won’t include Elisabeth Shue.

This marks Shue’s second appearance in the throwdown, after Cocktail was upset by Strange Brew. Remarkably, 22 years after she babysat, Shue doesn’t look any different, as seen in a recent Curb Your Enthusiasm episode. (Though as Will Leitch notes, it was odd to see Elisabeth Shue not playing Elizabeth Shue. Maybe it was the three-way?). Even more remarkably, seeing Shue on Curb made me realize that my opinion of her hasn’t changed since my younger sister first made me watch this:

But it’ll take more than Shue’s beauty to knock off the best stutter in film until Rocket Science came out in 2007.

Ken

Between Michael Palin’s performance as Ken, Kline’s incredible portrayal of Otto and the always stellar John Cleese (who also co-wrote and co-directed the film), A Fish Called Wanda is clearly the favorite to advance to the Round of 32. Can Elisabeth Shue turn the tables just as Strange Brew did to her earlier in the tournament?

I wasn’t expecting this to happen. It was pleasant, exhilarating even, but totally unexpected. I’m watching Curb Your Enthusiasm the other night and totally enjoying it because Curb is quietly stringing together one of the greatest seasons a comedy series has ever had. Yes, it’s true. Ask anyone who has been watching. But that wasn’t the unexpected. I expected it to be great. I wasn’t prepared for…her. A beauty. An icon. Someone whose career was so sizzling hot that it couldn’t be accurately measured. And then she vanished. I thought that maybe I had seen the last of her. Maybe she had pulled a Greta Garbo and gone out at her peak. I didn’t know. I didn’t want to know. But at the midway point in the show, Elisabeth Shue walked back into my life. Into our lives. And it was glorious.

She introduced herself to the world 25 years ago as Ali Mills, great name by the way, the love interest of the Karate Kid. She was tough, funny, smart, and amazingly beautiful. You could see why a skinny little nerd from New Jersey would fall for her. You could also see why she would attract a big, blonde bully like Johnny Lawrence. She appealed to everyone. Now I have absolutely no evidence to support this, but I think even Mr. Miyagi had a little thing for her. And who could blame him. If you are a guy, you think Elisabeth Shue is hot. It’s a fact, and it’s undisputed. Do you think that Daniel Larusso wanted to go to a new school and hit on the tough guy’s ex girlfriend? No way. But one look at Elisabeth Shue and he had no choice. Every guy understands this. No matter how many times the Cobra Kai would “Sweep the leg”, I would suffer their beat downs if I got to have Elisabeth Shue in the end. Granted, I would have gotten my revenge on them long before the All Valley Karate Championships, but that’s another story.

A few years later, she shows the world that she would do anything to protect children in Adventures in Babysitting. It’s a pretty funny movie, and she is great. Even the cringe inducing Babysitting Blues scene gets a pass because she is so likeable.

A whole generation of kids wish that she would show up at their door to baby sit them. Girls would relate to her and boys would be all kinds of flustered, but in a good way. Look, if you are a ten year old boy, and she is your babysitter, your youth is over. There is no way for puberty to be held at bay. Her beauty is that strong.

She follows that up with a remarkable turn in a movie that everyone remembers, Cocktail. You remember Cocktail. A movie about a couple of bartenders that throw bottles around and recite poetry on top of the bar, yet never make one drink. I’ve worked at and been to many bars over the years, and if I were ever in a bar where they were two dudes throwing around bottles, reciting poetry, and dancing to the Hippy Hippy Shake, I would leave immediately. I don’t want to see that. Hey, thanks for the show, but I really want a beer. How does that place stay open? They never sell a drink. Anyway, Elisabeth Shue falls for one of these dopes and doesn’t even mind his ridiculous work behavior. That takes a strong woman. Or an idiot. Now I’m starting to question her. But I have to remember it’s fiction, and that it takes a great actress to be able to pull that off. And she does. Her presence elevated that film. I’m not even going to talk about her in a bathing suit underneath that waterfall. That’s a whole other blog.

People really started taking her seriously after her Oscar nominated performance in Leaving Las Vegas. In that movie, she plays a hooker with a heart of gold who helps an alcoholic drink himself to death. Great date movie. It’s a tough film, but she’s phenomenal. And as far as Hookers with a heart of gold go, she blows Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman away. She even does her own nudity, which I think we all appreciate. I know I did. 9 out of 10 guys would choose Elisabeth Shue over Julia Roberts any day. I’m positive.

After that, she did a couple of other movies like The Saint and Hollow Man, and then disappeared. Or at least I thought she did. I checked IMDB, and it turns out she’s been working this whole time. I just didn’t see anything that she was in. I blame Hollywood. There are other actresses her age getting great roles that aren’t half as talented. It doesn’t make any sense. Thankfully the geniuses that are Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, brought her back into the mainstream.

It was fun seeing her again. I hope her role isn’t just a one off. But if it is, at least she re-introduced herself to the world and let them know that she is still stunningly gorgeous and awesome. Pop Culture doesn’t need the Kardashians and the Real Housewives. It needs smarts. It needs grace. It needs Elisabeth Shue.

“I’m Larry David, and I happen to enjoy wearing women’s panties.”

With only two episode left after last night we are really getting down to the wire on the Seinfeld reunion. The majority of this episode revolved around who would play George’s wife in the reunion. Of course Larry is pulling for Cheryl since he has hopes that it will bring them back together, but another actress, Virgina Sloane played by Elizabeth Shue is auditioning as well. Aside from that problem, Larry was buying new pants at the Banana Republic when the fire alarm went off. Outside Larry runs into a police officer named Officer Krupke, just like in West Side Story. The officer is unfamiliar with the play and Larry sings a bit to him. Instead of waiting for the building to be cleared he leaves his old pants inside and leaves in the new one with the security tag still on them with intentions of returning later. Meanwhile Susie finds a pair of panties in Jeff’s glove compartment. Instead of fessing up to cheating on her, he tells Susie that they are Larry’s. Larry has some trouble with Jeff’s explanation, but agrees to go along with the ruse to help Jeff. Over at Jeff’s house Larry takes a walk and insults some kids running a lemonade stand. Their mother tracks Larry down and threatens to call the cops on him.

That next day at the audition Cheryl and Virgina realize they are both reading for the same part. They are old friends and Virgina invites Cheryl to have lunch with her and her husband, Bo Duke… I mean Dennis played by John Schneider. Inside the audition Cheryl does very well, but ultimately the part is offered to Virgina.

When Larry goes to return the pants he bought and get his old pair back the store can’t find his old pair so Larry just keeps the new pair with the security tag on them. Outside the store Larry bumps into Cheryl and tells her that she didn’t get the part. She tells him at lunch that Dennis asked her to be in a ménage a trios with he and Virgina. Larry is appalled and confronts Dennis, who tells Larry that Cheryl was very open to the idea. Over at Jeff and Susie’s house Jeff is getting nervous about Susie finding out about the panties. When Larry shows up Jeff convinces him to sell the story better than tells Larry that Virgina can’t play the role because she hurt her neck. Of course the two can only think of two ways to hurt your neck, a car accident and cunnilingus. They jump to the last conclusion involving Virgina and Cheryl after they see that Virgina’s car hasn’t been wrecked.

Larry tells Cheryl she has the part over lunch, but she walks out on him after he tells her his theory. After Cheryl storms out Larry gets a call from Jeff who needs Larry’s help convincing Susie about the panties. Larry has an idea. Larry heads over there and on the way sings “Krup You” to the lady and the kids running the lemonade stand. They call Officer Krupke and when he shows up he notices the security tag on Larry’s pants. Larry takes off the pants to give them to him revealing women’s underwear.

Thought and Observations:

Curb has been relying on lots of huge coincidences this season. There are over 9,000 LAPD officers out there. What are the odds that Officer Krupke would be the one that showed up at Jeff’s house?

I know I saw Ben Affleck leaving the Banana Republic when the fire alarm went off. DId anyone else notice this? I watched it twice and it’s defiantly him.

“‘Hey, Officer Krupke, Krup you!’ Has anyone ever said that to you?” “No. Some guy told me to go fuck my face once. He went to jail.”

There have been quite a few references to Jeff’s extramarital liaisons this season. Think he’s heading for big trouble by season end?

I have a feeling that the Seinfeld Reunion won’t ever see the light of day. Not sure why, I just do.

O drama jucata exemplar!!!

Has Hollywood explored the “invisible man” enough or is there a new hidden depth in the

Has Hollywood explored the “invisible man” enough or is there a new hidden depth in the theory?

“Hollow Man’s” story brings us deep into the mind of a frustrated scientist Sebastian Caine and his abused team who are on the verge of uncovering the secrets of invisibility. Caine is ego driven and often drives his co-workers insane by his stunts. Caine oversteps his bounds when he decides to turn his experiments on himself and become the world’s first man to step into the invisible world.

“Hollow Man” is directed by Paul Verhoeven who brought us “Total Recall“, “Starship Troopers” and “Basic Instinct“. In a lot of Verhoeven films there is always an exploration into the world of eroticism from a twisted angle. Some of those twisted angles include the co-ed showers in “Troopers”, the three breasted woman in “Recall” and the heavy lesbianism in “Instinct”. All of them push the envelope and were all controversial. In “Hollow Man” this tradition continues.

Another tradition associated with Verhoeven is his amazing special effects. “Hollow Man” does pave a new road for invisibility and the effects here are truly amazing. The idea of watching a man disappear a vein at a time was breathtaking.

See-thru Bacon... just like his performance!

I liked the questions “Hollow Man” asks but under its shiny special effects surface we have a pretty mind numbing B monster movie without a beast. Some films that achieved monster movie status and were enjoyable include “Leviathan“, “The Relic“, “Predator” and “Watchers” but “Hollow Man” for me really never broke free of its B-movie script.

The creature unleashed in the lab always seems to have its final battle within the walls of that same lab. Why is that? And as for Bacon being a creature well his portrayal is believable about half the time. The more and more he loses his humanity the more the film sinks into creature feature mode. I wish the film would have dealt more with the subject matter on a human level.

My biggest disappointment is that this film doesn’t really explain or answer the question I asked Kevin Bacon last week, “Why do all invisible men eventually go insane?” Caine is insane from start to finish in this film. “Hollow Man” to put it plainly is quite hollow.

3 out of 5

So Says the Soothsayer.

Dear Summer of 2009, Enough. Okay? Enough. You have taken from us too many Major Figures in American

Dear Summer of 2009,

Enough.

Okay? Enough.

You have taken from us too many Major Figures in American Culture, and we can’t bear it any more. Farrah. MJ. John Hughes. Walter Cronkite. And then, just yesterday, Ted Kennedy, Dominick Dunne, and Ellie Greenwich (writer and producer of such girl-group classics as “Leader of the Pack,” “Be My Baby,” “Da Doo Ron Ron,” and “Then He Kissed Me”). It’s too much, Summer of 2009.

I can’t claim to have thought about any of these individuals on a regular basis—I can’t even claim to have known Ellie Greenwich’s name before yesterday. Yet their deaths hit as losses all the same, I suppose because each made a significant cultural impact in his or her own way. I do not want to imagine a world with no red-bathing-suit poster, no moonwalk, no classic teen comedies, no CBS gravitas, no stalwart Massachusetts liberals, no trashy Vanity Fair articles, no bouffanted girl groups.

It may be, too, that the losses can be chalked up to my established, encroaching old-fogey-dom, and that with each new obituary I feel a sense of “oh, there goes the last of the great statesmen / songwriters / broadcasters / moonwalkers / etc.”

I’m glad to know Ellie Greenwich’s name now, at least, because I do have this romantic idea of the Brill Building heyday, and do secretly (or not-so) wish I were in a girl group. Actually, Mama Kitt and another friend and I were once sort of in a girl group—we lip-synched as the Supremes at a junior high dance—and apparently I was cute enough in it that I caught the eye of a boy I’d go on to date in high school. And in grad school, girl groups played a key role in clarifying the argument of my dissertation. (I won’t bore you with how.) The opening scene of Adventures in Babysitting, where Elisabeth Shue lip-syncs to “Then He Kissed Me,” is burned into my brain. For a time, in a big empty room in my family’s big old house, I would recreate that scene with my boom box and a cassette tape for hours on end.

Ellie, Ted, other Major Figures in American Culture—we will miss you. Summer of 2009—enough, okay? Okay.
