Here we are again. Another Saturday night … another SyFy Original … another LAKE PLACID flick!! Can you believe we’re on the third sequel?? LAKE PLACID 4: THE FINAL CHAPTER picks up directly where part three left off, with Game and Wildlife agent Reba (Yancy Butler) fighting off a killer croc. After this sequence, we jump to the opening credits and then get right to the fun. Was there a need for another LAKE PLACID flick? Does it seem silly that the authorities haven’t gone into the area and wiped out every last croc? Is this really the last LAKE PLACID flick?

LAKE PLACID 4 jumps right into the fray as we join Reba (the aforementioned Yancy Butler), Sheriff Giove (Elizabeth Röhm), and an engineer from the Army Corp of Engineers as they discuss the benefits and stupidity of the large fence that’s been built around Lake Placid in order to control the killer croc population. It seems these are rare crocs that “must be protected.” But if you’re wondering what food source the crocs will turn to after they eat everything in the fenced in area, well that’s obviously a point that writers David and Mairin Reed completely ignored. As expected the crocs turn to the nearby human population to munch on. Well duh!! We get all the typical side stories and love interests as the story progresses and there’s nothing here that particularly original. But I found myself, like always, having a pretty good time. Yeah, yeah, yeah … you know me by now. A SyFy flick has to be really bad for me to hate it. I find SyFy Originals (for the most part) to be simple-minded fun and ya don’t have to invest a whole lot into watching them. LAKE PLACID 4 delivers in this respect. There won’t be any awards being won here, but if you’re looking for giant crocs chewing their way through the cast then this is the film for you.

What’s become typical in the LAKE PLACID franchise is to have someone, usually a ‘name’ celebrity, popping up from the Bickerman family. In the original film it was Betty White (as Delores Bickerman) who started all the problems by feeding the lil baby crocs. In part two it was Cloris Leachman taking on the role of Delores’ sister, Sadie Bickerman. In part three we get a younger Bickerman, here being played by EUREKA’s Colin Ferguson. Finally in THE FINAL CHAPTER we get perhaps the biggest name yet in the Bickerman role: Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund. Englund, as always, is terrific and puts in a typically grandiose performance as a backwoods croc poacher. He adds both an element of menace and comic relief in LAKE PLACID 4 and as expected out-acts the other cast members. The rest of the cast do great jobs, but Englund definitely stands out. No matter what role Englund plays he’s always fantastic. He’s a real actors’ actor. He loves to be in front of the camera performing, and the camera loves him.

The other scene-stealer is Yancy Butler. I admit that I was pretty hard on Butler in one of her films I saw last year, but her performance in LAKE PLACID 4 was fantastic. She was the ‘Yancy Butler’ I was used to seeing: Strong, sexy, a killer body, and she was a big presence in the film. She was great!!

The story unfolds in a pretty standard fashion but that’s okay with me. I don’t watch SyFy Originals with the hopes of seeing a film that re-defines the genre. I want action, giant ‘things’ attacking stupid people, bloody scenes of said attacks, and skimpily clad women bouncing around. LAKE PLACID 4 has all this and more. Okay; maybe not more, but definitely not less. LAKE PLACID 4 is exactly what you think you’re gonna get. It’s not out to re-invent the wheel but it keeps everything moving along at a brisk pace and has lots of croc-related violence. Could you go elsewhere to get your fix of cheesy, B-movies? Of course you could. But why would you when the SyFy channel does them so damn well??

Aahhh … Yancy is back & just as I remember her!!

LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER is airing on the SyFy channel on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 9pm ET/PT. Check this one out (though I don’t believe for a second this is indeed “The Final Chapter”).

The Master of Disguise

Remember when I complained that Kate’s last appearance served as little more than a reminder that she existed?  Well, “Sense and Sensitivity” gives us the full Lockley and it’s enough to make me wish she’d recede back into the scenery.  It’s not that I dislike the idea that her “tough as nails” cop personae masks some secret pain (it may be an old idea, but it’s not a bad one), it’s that childhood trauma-Kate appears before we’ve had a chance to get comfortable with insensitive-Kate.  The failure to ease into the character makes the magic feelings stick seem like little more than a gimmicky excuse for some melodrama.

The episode starts out promisingly enough as we mistake Kate for Buffy during the cold open.  Some might find the parallels insulting to a far superior character, but I saw it as the series acknowledging what we’ve all been thinking anyway, Kate is a lot like Buffy.  This scene also does some necessary work in distinguishing the two women.  Yes, they’re both ass-kicking hot blondes, but Kate’s… kinda mean.  Not excessively so, especially in a world populated by demons, but where Buffy delivered puns with her punches and dispatched foes in an inoffensive cloud of dust, Kate’s all business as she roughs a humanly fragile suspect.

I actually think that there was some mileage to be had from comparing and contrasting Kate with Angel’s ex but, sadly, this episode’s genre-element has her and everyone else at her precinct getting in touch with their feelings.  This also could’ve worked as a story, but only after we’d begun to care about her character.  As it stands, Elizabeth Rohm is left to flounder in what should be a heart wrenching scene at her father’s retirement party.  Her performance is fine, but it’s not enough to carry the emotion without us having any background.

Fortunately, the episode stops dwelling on Kate after her daddy issues are revealed and gets into its real point, having some laughs at tough guys gone soft.  It seems I’m using the word “could’ve” a lot in this write up, but this gag could’ve worked, at least until Angel fell prey to the spell.  We all saw this coming, given Cordelia’s complaints about how insensitive he is, but sensitive-Angel only underscores how ill-thought out this plot device is.  The feelings –stick turns Kate into an emotional train wreck over her father’s detachment, but somehow it turns Angel into a peace loving softy who won’t do anything until he hears the magic word?  Surely an Angel who’s in touch with his feelings would be crippled by guilt, maybe with unhealthy dose sexual of frustration thrown in.  We can’t even claim that the stick suppresses aggressive emotions, considering how quickly the retirement party turned into a brawl.

The feelings-stick is the worst sort of genre-conceit, “magic” as a means to tell a particular story without thought to the ramifications for established characters.  I might be more forgiving of this if only the results weren’t so unentertaining.

Final Thoughts

Little Tony makes for a pretty weak villain, though it is nice to see Wolfram and Hart back in the mix; if only the lawyer had been Lindsey and not what’s his name.

Angel posing as a tourist was pretty excellent, it’s the sort of opportunity for Boreanaz to be goofy that makes sense, as opposed to the rest of the episode.

After attending Saint Andrew’s Sewanee boarding school in Tennessee she headed to Miami to model. Elisabeth first appeared in the second episode of Angel as Detective Kate Lockley and became a regular guest star throughout Season One and Two. She left on gaining a more regular job on popular procedural drama, Law & Order, as A.D.A Serena Southerlyn.

Since leaving Law and Order, Elisabeth has appeared as guest star in such shows as The Mentalist and had a recurring role in the final season of Heroes. Elizabeth currently has several films in the pipeline for 2011 and 2012 including a rumoured role in Officer Down which also stars David Boreanaz.

Elisabeth’s other passion is horse riding and she once dreamed of becoming a professional rider. Her other hobbies include skiing, traveling and architecture.

Elizabeth Rohm is confident there will be another series of Heroes

“It isn’t totally confirmed but I think all of us actors feel we’ll have another season,” she said at a bash in Los Angeles celebrating the work of British designer Matthew Williamson , who was being named Britweek Designer Of The Year.

Despite a small drop in ratings Stateside, the actress admitted that all the Heroes cast and crew are passionate about seeing the story completed.

“I think when you have a show that’s been on the air for a long time, like I did Law And Order, it’s emotional. You want the show to finish, so I think we’ll get another season,” she said.

And Elizabeth said she understood how the BBC had picked up some hardcore fans of the show.

“Having done Angel and really understanding how much people love sci-fi, you know I get it, it’s this sort of spectacular show… sort of like Matthew Williamson!” she laughed.

Something weird happened towards the end of the last season of this show. By which I mean, the show actually became imminently watchable. And when the new 90210 became watchable, that’s when I said I wasn’t going to come back and watch the second season.

Well, guys, it turns out that I was wrong, and the CW sucked me back in. As I don’t have classes until Sept. 30, I have nothing better to do then watch a perfectly fine hour of soapy teen television. The only bummer is that I can’t really mock the show anymore. But then again, maybe I just have to learn to write about it in a different way.

Upgrade!

For instance, I don’t have much to say about the premiere of season 2 because there wasn’t really anything objectionable about it. It’s improved on so many levels. I find Adriana’s quest to be a normal person very relatable, and I get that seeing mommies happy with her babies would take her back a bit to what she recently gave up. Putting Naomi in bed with an older man (and the complications that will arise from this act) is a high-stakes plotting move, and, though the way it played out in this episode was obvious, I think it has a lot of potential further down the line. Annie’s out-of-control spiral looks incredibly promising, as does new troublemaker Teddy, who seems to complicate everybody’s lives. Let me break that down:

• He was Adriana’s first lover, so Navid is instantly jealous.
• He’s really cute, but because he was with Aid, Naomi can’t date him.
• But that doesn’t matter, because he apparently wants Silver.
• He finds Silver’s phone filled with texts from Ethan, and blurts that out in front of Dixon, causing her to lose both men in one fell swoop.
• On the plus side, he does kind of save Navid’s cabana-stealing ass by throwing out his daddy’s name to appease angry beach club-goer Elizabeth Rohm (Angel), who also happens to be the wife of Naomi’s older lover.
• P.S. He saw Annie commit her hit and run.

That shit is, like, Gossip Girl complicated, yo!

Even stylistically, this new season is full of promise. I love Silver’s new hair and have to admit that even though I’ve been growing mine out, I love her haircut so much that I am strongly considering getting it cut like hers. Silver has the cutest one-piece swimsuits in the world. I like the new opening credits. Everyone’s makeup and clothing looks more expensive, less thrown together out of Forever 21, more culled from Nordstrom and Bloomingdales. These are all good things. I’ll even throw a bone to Adriana’s extensions, which I think make Jessica Lowndes look far too much like Courtney Cox, but which I also can’t deny are a good look.

On a Dustin Milligan related note, from his work on 90210, I’d have had no idea the kid was a good actor, but he gives one hell of a funny performance as a boneheaded gigolo in Mike Judge’s Extract. Now that I know he isn’t a pod person, I wish he were still around on 9fneh. The potential was there, but no one ever figured out how to use it. I just hope Ethan is at peace, fly fishing his days away in Montana. And now I’m thinking about A River Runs Through It. And now I might cry a little bit, because that movie is amazingly gorgeous.

Aaaaaaaand . . . I can’t believe it took the writers until season 2 to make a “Hi-ho, Silver!” joke. Really. That should have happened ages ago.

So, it looks like you’ve hooked me, 90210. But I have managed to cleverly resist Melrose Place by TiNoing it. And every time I think about watching it, I find a better way to spend those 42 minutes. Like writing this, for instance.

Finally. Someone please explain to me what people see between Miranda and Andy on Devils Wear Prada?! I’ll admit, I’ve never seen the movie, but I broke down and read the fic on ralst.com. The fic is great… then I watched a few clips on youtube. I know age is just a number and all that, but still. I’m not feeling it. Yet the fic is like a beautifully written trainwreck that you can’t pull your eyes away from.
