visualiZing a visual What I find most interesting about Timo 2006 web page and the dash line is that

visualiZing a visual

What I find most interesting about Timo 2006 web page and the dash line is that I never thought of it as a visual. It was always just there, I did not think about the intricacies that are behind the meaning of the actual line. It is explained that the line is a path, a refocus, a border, an anticipated expectation, as a link, or as a representation of a symbol. I can’t help to wonder if we ever thought of the line as a chain of events, or if there is a point A to point B or whether a person can cross the line without physically seeing it. Sure the line is supposed to be a representation and visual but can it ever be a silent visual one that we cannot see or pin point but is still there?

Putting something into words is apparently harder than it sounds, I tried doing this when being asked to explain the worlds atmosphere, (firstly I forgot half the spheres and I have no idea what to call the surrounding things) but then I remembered back to science where a visualization was already done for me in 3d and on paper in the form of pictorial aids and graphs. Looking on infosthetics.com I now understand beyond my own small comprehension how data and words can be put into one diagram, graph or picture for example: mapping the average penis size world wide ( yes I had to use this one, when in our course ever will we be saying the word penis: and yes I am giggling as I type this). In all seriousness though it is indeed interesting to see how they have collected data and represented it in a visualization so that we may see in a clear, constructive, and illustrated way.

Edward tufte powerpoint visualization too made me wonder whether visualizes actually helped retain more information, are visualizations just there to represent something and look pretty so that we do not get bored? Or is it more than that, is it the associated preparation, work, effort, and meaning behind those charts that make visualizations effective in communicating to the wider audience. If you think about it they being the visualizations accompany the words so that we cognitively think and link and process the information given to us.

ARCHIVAL—–RIVALRY This weeks readings compel me to think about how many archives I come

ARCHIVAL—–RIVALRY

This weeks readings compel me to think about how many archives I come into contact with every day and how many times I have used an archive or looked at an archive without even realizing it. Derrida perception focuses on that all that is recorded in any way shape or form are a form of data because it is a tangible piece of information that is stored somewhere. This is intriguing because it just shows that all archives hold the fabrication of society together: for example: google is the basis and foundation of where most go to look for a source or piece of information, from here they find a record that was uploaded by a disc, usb or through other channels. The links and web grows bigger with every archive added.

I think that the evolvement of the archive is most definitely a turning point in how we look at what an archive is. Centuries ago there was papyrus and scroll for the gyptians to record important events, or tablets if it was royal i.e. Ramsess 11 accomplishment at Kadesh. Today because people are such in a rush to get somewhere, they often forget to write things down or in our case because of the internet age we can write whatever we want in the moment, unlike before where you made a mental note, the archive is made online instantaneously. I think that this is a pretty amazing theory, the online archive, digital space or place to store info at any given time ( twitter, facebook, tumblr, blog spot, web pages, chat rooms, etc).

The thing about archives is, that they are permanent, yes they can be modified to an individuals tailoring but essentially the record is there stamped with a time and date, so memory is never lost. The page of my schools is a prime example of a collective archive, it stores information on thousands of schools, school results, and teachers as well as other data that has been collected. This is one way in which an archive has collected information and catalogued it over its life time i.e. different schools and their progressions. Through these archives we evaluate ourselves, we look at the different you tube clips are posted and identify with the one that represents us most by watching it continuously and sharing it, it shows that there are people who are interested in the same topics or same thing as us.

There are different ideas of how to publish and distribute and keep record. I think it is vital to realize that there print circulation is down but always kept and remembered because it is tangible, online publishing can record everything and keep everything but not necessarily remembered because so much is out there. In terms of record keeping, a record can be stored and kept anywhere, the problem with print is that it can be destroyed i.e. a clay tablet can have preservation problems while online can be kept forever on a satellite, this too has its problems i.e. computer failure and people chaning what you wrote. Originality can be a problem because so much can be copied, shared or passed along.

The Changing definition of Publishing….what does it mean to us in this day and age? It is unde

The Changing definition of Publishing….what does it mean to us in this day and age?

It is undeniable to skip over the very basis and fundamental theme of this topic which is PUBLISHING. The defining of the term helps me personally understand what publishing is and how it has changed from the traditional to the contemporary. The ever so useful link of wikipedia has in turn done this for me and established a broad understanding. It is the process of disseminating literature and information to a majority of people. traditionally distribution was related to printed works such as the news papers and has only known become more tolerant and acceptable with online sources such as electronic websites and blogs. For me i still view publishing as just getting a book or a big publication out there in black and white, i should learn from this entry that what i am doing right now is indeed publishing myself. The tricky concept of publishing is further branching out into different types of publishing such as print and web based sources

the publishing guidelines and formalities:

Acceptance and negotiation

Pre-production stages

Printing

Distribution

open publishing is a term used to reiterate that anything is free and people have the choice and ability to post anything they virtually want anywhere just like me now writing about writing….

commons is relative when talking about the collective and groups such as environment or music ( not really understandin…)

ah ha success at last finally! a good source we were given to commentate on.. the guardian…i really like how it focuses on the change of publishing print copies of the economist ( which might i add absolutely rocks) to publishing on an ipad/internet where in virtually seconds there is a new issue each week downloaded. this changes practices and changes the way we view things in relation to the world. this changing technology has allowed for adaptation of every day life and essentially becomes a new mode of publishing one which seems more instantaneous and convenient.

Again the demonstration or example given to us to illustrate the changes in publishing is the comparison of parents reading their children e-books now rather than a real tangible i am so colorful fluffy and make sounds kinds of books. the seeping technology has allowed an avenue for publications to publish their work on multiple platforms of media and has changed the original practices of publishing.

the digitalist is another source that helps identify publishing, there is a sense that many publishers are looking online these days because it reaches millions of people. the personalized story or recount in Africa emphasizes that e books and the internet is the future and it is inevitable

SIMPLY PUT IN MY EYES IS: you could only get published by a publisher back in the nineties and before, the internet has revolutionized the way we publish, internet, email, blogs, you tube and other social networking sites have allowed us to virtually be our own publishers and do our own work.

audiences sad day last tuesday i was sick i wonder how the class went with out me well anyway doesnt

audiences sad day last tuesday i was sick i wonder how the class went with out me well anyway doesnt mean i did not do my reading, i did i skimmed it, only kidding i did read it without understanding but let me try and tell you what i did understand. i def agree with how audiences have increasingly expanded throughout time for example they gave the radio, traditionally only heard from a car or from a radio but now it has converged into computers and into mobiles making it more accessible and to a larger audience, another example one of my own is the tv i can watch it on a box but i can also watch it on my mobile and on the computer thus expanding its audience and creating new wider ones. i wonder if it was inevitable, then again whoever does not own a tv is arcahic and probably wouldnt watch it on tv and on a mobile.

i like that there are different definitions or appropriations for the word audience i tend to fit into the category of diffused audience where i live and breathe technology and media and it is in my every day life constantly. I THink the idea of the contemporary audience touches on how media only used to be in few forms and not much information was dispersed around yet today you can obtain info and the latest news from everywhere i.e. fb newspapers, internet, mobiles, magazines, posters, telephone etc. media drenched society i like that term cause i think its true its everywhere we are seeping in it and it is dripping from us. i think the whole audience is about extending its parameters i.e. were not just listening, watching or reading but sharing, and participating.

i also think the webcam brings audiences closer together and i will elaborate by saying game shows contestants and people in gerneal

networks: flow of information between nodes

i guess this kind of means that networks are fundamental in our lives and that networks are continuous in our lives through different mediated forms of technology i.e. we speak to each other, we continue on the phone, we then go the internet and the constant flow of info doesnt stop, time is no burden when speaking about networks. i think the hacker refers to everyone people are interested in just about everything and everyone these days and it is important that we are all conformed into one kind of let me explain, there is a need in these days to all have the same tastes and same thoughts, you dont really find anyone who is individual and i think that networks is a huge part of that and hackers, by hacking into files it is a platform for anyone and everyone to access information and the same files making us all collected together and not singular, excuse the really bad sentences its called a hang over. networks bring all differet types of people together, there is so much out there that wold be unknown if we did not have the communication systems we have today
