Momentan habe ich so eine große Lust, total abzufeiern. Der ganze langweilige Tagesablauf, das ganze Lernen, das ganze Arbeiten, das will ich grade mal so wegtanzen. Komme auch gerade vom Arbeiten heim, es ist früh morgens und da mein Stammclub genau gegenüber von meiner Arbeit liegt, konnte ich sehr gut mitbekommen, was da heute so abging. Hach. Als Tribut gibt es dieses schöne Lied von den beiden echt toppen-DJs Lexy &K-Paul, die ich auch sehr gerne mal wieder live erleben würde. Konnte heute leider nur am Club vorbeilaufen, und die tiefen Bässe und minimalistische-elektronische Töne vernehmen. Ich glaube, ich muss übernächste Woche dringend zu Ellen Allien gehen. Einfach den ganzen Unistress wegfeiern, der sich seit Wochen ohne Ablassventil ansammelt.

Die Tage werde ich auch an einigen Projekten hoffentlich weiterarbeiten. Immerhin steht noch viel Bastelarbeit aus, für ein anderes Projekt muss ich endlich mal das Storyboard umsetzen und für wieder was anderes Entwürfe anfangen. Jetzt wo ich den neuen und viel schnelleren Lap-Top habe. kann ich doch sicher auch viel besser und effizienter arbeiten. Muss meine Mappen ja mal ein bisschen mit neuem Kram aufstocken.

So, meine Schlaflosigkeit werde ich jetzt dazu nutzen, ein weiteres Thesenpapier für die Uni fertig zu schreiben. Oder eventuell an nem neuen Mix basteln. Da hab ich so Lust drauf.

I wish it could be true.

There was a boy and a girl and they found in each other a likeness that they had found in no one else before. Their eyes met for the first time and they knew without saying anything, even to themselves, that they understood each other completely. They made buttons with the image of a bicycle and a heart on it, that said “i wish it could be true,” and gave them out to their friends.

They loved life, and their passion spread. Others started to ride bicycles as well, and started to help passing out the pins. Pretty soon the images were being posted across buildings and a revolution was born. It was bigger than Obama, because it was a true revolution, one that promoted an idea that individuals adapted to, rather than a leader to who was tasked with the burden of taking responsibility off of the shoulders of the citizens.

People admitted responsibility by making new choices.

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which effectively was the Fall of Communism in Germany. The wall was built in 1961 and wasn’t pulled down until the 9th of November 1989. With me having a German grandmother i’ve always had a keen interest in all things German from a young age and have been told many stories about the Berlin wall by my Gran and my mum.

Seeing as this isn’t a history lesson though i’m not going to waffle on about the Berlin Wall, i’ll get to the point, this weeks list is a collection of German bands/artists, mainly hailing from Berlin but some from other areas. And also included in the list is one song about the Wall itself.

Ellen Allien - 'Sool'

It starts with an announcement; the same analogue female voice that seems to speak a hundred different languages from Boston to Belgrade. Over an invisible tannoy, and with the same polite tone—intended to put us at ease, but always sounding so alien and removed it creates an eerie distance—she informs us of our next stop: “U-Bahnhof Alexanderplatz.”

The chatter of commuters filters in. Buzzing conversation, hundreds of feet stepping out of line, the clash of crockery in a cafe. A solitary note picks its way through, growing in confidence against the background’s organic clutter. The faint sound of the subway train glides off against the slightest of synths, melting together with the rumble of the tracks and delicately descending in a way that recalls the introductory seconds to Vangelis’ “End Credits” for Bladerunner.

If it’s apparent from “Einsteigen”, Sool’s opening track, that this is a destination record, it’s unclear whether the journey belongs to us or Ellen Allien. Darling of Berlin’s distinctive minimal scene, and founder of the city’s seminal and influential Bpitch Records, Allien has always straddled the various sides of techno. From fluid minimalism with “Berlinette” to warm slices of lush electro with Apparat on “Orchestra of Bubbles”, the structures might have varied in design, but the foundations have always been grounded in sturdy, danceable, repetitive beats. Sool, however, finds Allien freeing the structure from its shackles and allowing it to breathe, like some grand design drifting into space in 2001-style grandeur.

If minimalism is taking back the beat from techno, and drawing it out into one long intoxicating rhythm, Sool‘s purpose is to free the composition from the beat altogether. Rather than rest the tracks on a generic beat and build over it, Allien finds joy in exploring the space around it, teasing out a ticking melody in the surroundings. It’s all very electronica, with different sounds and movements toyed with throughout, but cleverly ever-so restrained that it juicingly retains it’s danceability. “Caress” starts with the sound of a beat seemingly pondering the opening bars to Leftfield’s “Inspection (Check One)”, slowly, and over and over again. While the trusted beat dithers in time, it’s left to a bouncing ping-pong ball to usher the song in, a ghostly voice whispering the title so it sounds like “K-R-S”, as the track drifts along on its bare bones.

By isolating the traditional techno beat, Allien is forcing the listener to find other foot-tapping escapes. “Elphine” springs along on the tick-tock of a wristwatch, before spiralling down into whistling echoes from a long-ago acid house rave. “Bim” takes on pneumatic pulses and luscious repeats of “Bim, bam, boom.” “Zauber” rests on a looped brush-like hook, the haunting oboe melody conjuring up visions of late evenings in medieval castles as if Clannad have been caught and stripped bare. And yet while Allien experiments with her surroundings, she’s not averse to letting the beat out of its cage. Delivering seven minutes of pure, pulsating, minimalism, “Its” explores the same relentless, driving beat that both Bjork (“Declare Independence”) and Portishead (“We Carry On”) have toyed with in the past 12 months, while the last bursts of what sounds like a decaying pinball machine pour over the top.

Elsewhere, the beats are so limited that at times they sound like faint, tiny heartbeats. “Out” practically disperses with them altogether favouring building a grinding motion by dislocating and repeating the title. While on “Ondu”, a piccolo creates a distinct image against the contained sound of a dying engine, the ghostly turbulence creating its own hushed beat, like the lonely hum of a discarded spaceship.

By stripping these structures down to their bare bones, Allien has moved beyond minimalism into what can only be described as skeletalism. Yet the sounds she has imagined, however cracked and dislocated they may seem at times, remain warm and consistently infectious. Absorbing oneself in the future-noir landscape within can take some time, but as the layers are stripped away with repeated listens, Sool becomes more and more striking.

A DJéia é uma das principais forças do techno mundial, emprestando à mafia alemã o estilo mais gracioso e charmoso da trupe. Apesar de seu disco mais recente, “Sool”, ser fraco em comparação aos anteriores e ao mix album que fez para o Fabric (vol.34), o recente podcast feito para o Resident Advisor mostra que a moça continua em forma.

Telefon Tel Aviv @ The Bell House, Friday Sept. 11th

Telefon Tel Aviv played before a half-moon shaped crowd last Friday night at The Bell House — unfortunately, the room was half empty also. My boyfriend, who was three-quarters ejaculating at the chance to finally see this band, called foul when Telefon lead man Joshua Eustis started singing. Apparently, my boyfriend best knew TTA in 2001 as a vocal-free blip and blop beat wonder, and he took it to heart that their newest BPMs vulgarly hit 120 and Eustis was clouding each jam with incoherent man singing. However, their 2004 disc, Map of What is Effortless, put out by Chicago electronica label Hefty Records, is characterized by a midtempo glitchy R&B sound with trading male and female vocals, so their current sound should be unsurprising for Telefon acolytes. If you hadn’t paid attention to TTA for the last seven years, you wouldn’t recognize the band of last Friday night — which I think most bands would find flattering.

Nevertheless, TTA’s beats were still sexy, even as the Bellhouse scene was a little too well dressed for sexy. The songs they played from their newest disc, Immolate Yourself, a disc released earlier this year in January on Ellen Allien’s German label BPitch Control, all had a bleary-eyed ambiance to them. Sonically, they seemed referential to uncomfortable mornings, insomnia, or night sweats. The message of the set seemed to project an ambiguous darkness, which given the quizzical death of former band founder Charles Cooper, could have been intended. A picture of a sweaty note on their Myspace page says, “with this song you’ve managed to musically describe the female orgasm. Nice fuckin’ job!” This sentiment seems to capture a previous blithe era of the band, and although it is likely that many still climax to TTA, it seems solemnity and “realness” are a new priority for Eustis’ project.

Und weil ich die Lieder top finde und ich ihre Abende, wo sie auflegt, auch nur wärmstens empfehlen kann, poste ich doch mal die beiden Tracks hier. Das Bild oben hab ich übrigens im Dezember letzten Jahres von ihr geschossen.
