Dear Ellen,

We set sail today and braved the storms of the open ocean; that is, we went to the mall on Black Friday.  Same difference.  Normally, on the day following Thanksgving, I would stay as far away as possible from any place with price tags.  But, Sara was suffering from Costco deprivation, and Costco is just down the road from Macy’s- to where I had an aging gift card taking up space in my wallet- and Macy’s is connected to the mall.  You get the logic.  The compromise was that I could sleep in, enjoy a leisurely morning, and allow my stomach to fully settle after last night’s gorge.  No camping out in front of Best Buy for me.  Rather, that is an occasion in which to hire a personal shopper…

The first time I heard of a “personal shopper” was when I briefly worked as a retail associate at J.Crew.  You can “hire” one there.  If you are fortunate [and important] enough to have someone planning your daily wardrobe, I’m not sure why you’d send them to a J.Crew store- wouldn’t Saks or Barneys be of a more appropriate caliber?  Don’t get me wrong, I certainly like J.Crew enough to have been employed there- the 50% discount didn’t hurt either- but the exclusives are catalog only items anyhow.  And who needs to pay someone to pick up the phone?

If I had a personal shopper…he- yes, it would be a he- would be responsible for shoes, makeup, jewelry, jeans, kitchenware, electronics, and waking at dawn on Black Friday to get those doorbuster deals.  Though, if I could afford to pay someone to pay for it for me then I suppose I could affort to pay full price.  If I had a personal shopper… I would only ever go to TJ Maxx because it’s the happiest place on Earth.  And you thought it was Disneyland.  I’d also do my own gift shopping…maybe.  At least I’d shop for my girlfriend and let my personal shopper handle the rest of the Christmas list.  Or, I’d choose Sara’s gift and have my personal shopper go out and get it.  I might as well get my money’s worth out of him.

Why is shopping so exhausting?  It’s basically like going on an expensive walk with frequent stops.  I think it’s all the decision-making that goes into it.  It’s mental drainage.  What if there were only one of everything?  Then we’d all be walking around in the same Christmas sweater and sheepskin boots and all our personal shoppers would join the ranks of the unemployed.  Thank God for excess.

I am a fan of Ellen Degeneres.  As I was looking through my YouTube favourites, I came across this.

I don’t care if you don’t like rap, or T-Pain, or Ellen, it’s hilarious and I think you should watch it.  But really, I can understand if you don’t like rap or T-Pain, but how can you not like Ellen?

I just got goose bumps from listening to Rhap Salazar sing All By Myself, while debuting for the first time in the United States on The Ellen Degeneres Show.

Lovely tone and experienced singer, sounds like he’s been doing it for years!

I’m glad Ellen brought him over to the United States to share his talent with us.

It was his birthday wish to perform on the show.

He started singing when he was 3 years old.

Ellen DeGeneres Show – November 17, 2009

You won’t believe the voice of 12-year-old RHAP SALAZAR. I saw a YouTube video of his singing and it blew me away. I’m flying him in all the way from the Philippines. Then, I’ve helped DWAYNE JOHNSON get over his fear of tarantulas, and last time we worked on his fear of roller coasters. When he’s here to talk about his new movie “Planet 51,” I’ll see if there’s anything else we can work on. Just call me Dr. Ellen. Also, with the amount that BRIAN WILLIAMS travels the world while hosting “NBC Nightly News,” I’m so happy that he’s taking the time to be on my show today. He is a funny guy and it’s always great to have him here. I hear he’s a fan of pranks, too. Will he still be a fan if the prank is on him? There’s only one way to find out! Also, you never know who else may drop by the show today, so don’t miss it! And I’m getting excited — it’s just three more days until Robert Pattinson is here!

I have already said that I spend a lot of time on afterellen.com. I like the articles, the way it is presented, the snap of it (I have actually written an essay about it… maybe I will put it up on the essay page… I’ll think about it). So, is what I do every morning I read and this morning came across this article:

For those too lazy to follow the link: some of the bloggers of the page came up with a list of lesbian and bisexual character they are thankful for (since it is Thanksgiving and we all have to be thankful for something). The list was not what I thought it would be, some of the characters surprised me, most of all Nancy Bartlett (Sandra Bernhard) from “Roseanne.” I remember her, of course, since I watched that sitcom and still watch it’s reruns because I love the show.

Well, I started thinking abou the question myself but must have lost track because I thought of another character on “Roseanne” that was one of my favorite “lesbians”: Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf). Those of you who know the show may now say, but she wasn’t a lesbian. Yet she was. Strangely enough, in the last episode of the show Roseanne reveals that it was not her mother but her sister who had come out that last year of the show – she just changed it in her story, which was the show (it got complicated, but I thought it was well done). And I was not surprised. I guess, in a way I had always seen Jackie as lesbian, and her horrible track-record with men had little to do with it. She was just so… so gay.

And she wasn’t the only one on the show:

Darlene (Sarah Connor) to me became a sort of stereotype for lesbians-that-wasn’t. This is to say, they were character that should have been lesbians but the story-tellers, conventions, the invisible God that is society did not allow them to be lesbians. They were smart to a fault, arrogant because of it, had poor social skills and would say the seemingly meanest things – but not be aware of the meanness. Here are those I remember:

Remember “Growing Pains”? If I remember correctly it was the show, Leonardo di Caprio came out of (that’s not him in the picture, though). Tracy Gold’s character Carol Seavers was edgy, intelligent and usually the most grown up of the Seaver-kids. The constant reference toward her weight on the show brought on eating disorders for Gold and she had to resign… maybe she would have been happier if the writers had made her come out and tell her brother to finally shut up!

Andrea Zuckerman (Gabrielle Carteris). You cannot believe how much in love with her I was (without even knowing it). She was the main reason I watched “Beverly Hills 90210.” She was the oldest in a cast full of actors who were too old to play high-school-kids but, man, she could pull it off. Her character was the one who would hint at the controversial stuff discussed early in the show (remember the discussion about condom-dispensers in the school’s bathroom, the fact that she was probably the first teen on a tv show that had an African-American boyfriend…). Unfortunately, she was also the one with sexual missteps such as sleeping with her college professor, and the first of the girls who got pregnant (the only one?). I think, the writer’s never know what they are supposed to do with intelligent girls, so they make them sexually inexperienced and dumb in the respect of birth control.

Paris Gellar (Liza Weil). She’s classy, ambitious, an impossible character to love but I did that. And when you think about it: her first love-interest on the show was a boy she couldn’t have, then a boy she hardly ever saw, then an elderly – or rather “old” – man (what is it with would-be-lesbians and their professors?)… a closeted lesbian, if you ask me. The relationship with that editor-dude (whom I still blame in part for the death of Tara on “Buffy” – hate ‘em all!!!) was a mistake, clearly, they should have just given her a girlfriend and be done with it.

And last but not least (and she’s still on, even though they try to change her character and fit it into their little cake pan for heterosexual women):

Yes, Bones. And let me tell you, I get the goosebumps when Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Cam Saroyan (Tamara Taylor) are leaning closely over a dead body… and not because of the dead body. What can I say, I am twisted…

Just to come around, the lesbian / bisexual characters I am most thankful for (and I guess they are obvious answers, but I am an obvious kind-a-gal):

My grandmother taught me the secret of sleeping. When I was about seven, I got sick at her house and was put on the living room couch to sleep. I was extremely restless, and from her chair, she told me to close my eyes and lie still and I would fall asleep. And it worked. It still works. Now, whenever I can’t fall asleep, I just lie completely still and soon sleep finds me. This simple trick has helped me to fall asleep in the strangest places—on school buses, on the floor of a university’s business school, sitting completely upright in a kayak. But the most important lesson my grandmother taught me that day was not how to sleep. Rather, she taught me that being still is important. If you are still, whatever you are waiting for will come.

Even at the age of seven, I was restless. I couldn’t stop moving. Now, as I type this, my foot is jiggling. It’s nigh on impossible for me to sit completely still. Funnily enough, the more I sleep, the less I move. In class, I can always gauge how tired I am by how many time I switch position in five minutes. It annoys me just as much as it annoys the people sitting next to me. I wish I could find more stillness in my life, but as with many things, there never seems to be enough time.

Of course, there’s always the adage, “Don’t just sit back and watch your life go by.” But what are you missing if you are always chasing after life? What is the important things follow after you, but you’re too busy rushing onwards for them to catch up? Shouldn’t we use some of our life to see what happens, like Forrest Gump on his bend, and just wait, live, experience? What do we have to lose by stopping to smell the roses or living the moments now? Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow a vision, today is the only thing holding the two together. Being still allows life to take its time. True, there are only 24 hours in a day, but spending them in a rush creates a constant feeling of having only 23 or 22. Stillness, to some extent, allows for the full enjoyment and expression of all 24 hours.

But why stillness? Why is it so important? D.H. Lawrence wrote, “One’s action ought to come out of an achieved stillness: not to be mere rushing on.” Stillness brings inspiration; it allows one to be able to think more clearly and be more conscious of one’s ideas and actions. As a person with a cluttered mind, it would be nice to be able to sort through my thoughts in order to make sense of them, like Mrs. Darling in Peter Pan. Because I foresee that it will be difficult to achieve, I want it even more. We always want what we do not have, and I wish to gain stillness all the more because of its absence in my life.

I’ve been a student of yoga for about a year and a half now, goaded into it by my mother but continuing because of myself. When meditating, the practice is to not simply ignore the thoughts that come, but rather to acknowledge them and then return attention to the breath. I’ve tried this and depending on the day of the week, it works. Not always, but sometimes. It’s important to recognize that there are distractions in life, but to take time to be away from them and just be. However, my main trouble is always coming back to the breath. Throughout the day, my mind is always running, but in fits and starts. I think one task at a time, but one task leads to another and by the end of the day I have fifteen different things written on my hand. It’s kind of like that commercial with Ellen DeGeneres. When I try to clear my mind, suddenly all the things I have to do are laid out in front of me and I can see from one task to the next, rather than a jumble of things that will later be smeared across my palm. This is the exact opposite of the stillness I am trying to achieve, and simply leaves me feeling frustrated. Why can’t I quiet my mind? Why isn’t stillness of the mind as simple as the stillness of sleep?

The only thing I can think of is that it’s going to take time. Just as I have to wait for sleep to come after I’ve decided to be still, I’m going to have to practice quieting my mind in order for true stillness and peace to come. For now, I’m going to be thankful for the peace of mind I do have, and appreciate all the little things that make my life so full, loving the chaotic soul that I am. With time, the mind-quiet will come. As with anything, it’s just going to take some time.

TUCSON — Pam Reed, longtime director of the Holualoa Tucson Marathon, announced Sunday that the Tucson race will change directions this year, starting at Coronado Middle School in Tucson and ending in the Old West town of Oracle.

This marks a dramatic shift for the marathon, long known as the fastest course in America and a favorite of runners aiming to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

“I have been a fan of the Comrades Marathon (an ultramarathon in South Africa that alternates the direction of its course yearly, from uphill to downhill),” Reed said. “I thought, ‘If it works for them, why not try it in America?’ I hope this will present a fresh challenge for our runners and begin a tradition that will last many years.”

Not all runners seem to be pleased with the 11th-hour development.

“I signed up for this race specifically for a fast time,” says Bob DeMeola of Stamford, Conn. “Now I’m flying all the way across the country for an uphill death march and my slowest time ever? Thanks for the huge advance warning.”

But others were more excited.

“It will be like our own Pikes Peak Marathon, but without the annoying Coloradans,” said Tucson’s Amy Shandling.

Reed seems to like the comparison. The race is borrowing snowmaking machines from Sunrise Ski Resort in the White Mountains to create a snowy finish to the race. Snowpacks are expected to be fairly deep near Oracle, and runners are encouraged to carry snowshoes or crampons to deal with the last few miles approaching the finish.

And in yet another move to make the race more of a challenge, runners will be required to run while leashed to a surly Sherpa Monkey for the entire race and wear Holualoa Tucson Marathon 3-D Glasses. Reed noted that the monkeys will make the planned documentary more marketable, and the 3-D glasses will make moviegoers less self-conscious when watching the inevitable 3-D version.

It is not known yet if refunds will be available for runners who are already registered but don’t want to run the uphill course. Commemorative “Tucson Marathon Crampons” and “Tucson Marathon Snowshoes” will be for sale at the pre-race expo for runners who arrive without the proper equipment, in addition to the usual sweatshirts, caps and baby bibs.

Robert Pattinson is one busy guy. Between shooting and promoting the “Twilight Saga” films, he rarely gets to see his loved ones. So when he stopped by Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show Friday (November 20), he brought his whole family with him. But, to be safe, they stayed away from the screaming fans in the audience.

“That’s the way I like to keep my family,” he joked to Ellen. “Just in a pen.”

As for the fans, they didn’t really stop screaming from the moment Pattinson first appeared on the stage. It seemed to be a bit much for Pattinson. “It’s still in your ears afterward,” he said about the resounding response. “We’ve done five or six countries in a week.”

DeGeneres asked the actor if he had any clue just how big the “Twilight” movies would be. “I don’t think anyone did,” he said. “And it keeps getting bigger as well.”

Pattinson said he was surprised that the “New Moon” set wasn’t accosted by fans more frequently. “They did occasionally, but it was much more so on the first one,” he said. “I think we were just so remote.”

There has been much speculation over the past week in regards to the future of the Oprah Show on cable. According to the HuffingtonPost, Winfrey plans to announce the final date for her show during a live broadcast on Friday, Harpo Productions Inc. said, bringing an end to what has been television’s top-rated talk show for more than two decades, airing in 145 countries worldwide and watched by an estimated 42 million viewers a week in the U.S. alone.

Oprah Winfrey’s 24th season opened earlier this year with extreme success. She was able to draw in more than 20,000 fans to Chicago’s Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue for a block party with the Black Eyed Peas. She followed up with a series of blockbuster interviews – Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, exclusives with singer Whitney Houston and ESPN’s Erin Andrews, and just this week, former Alaska governor, GOP vice presidential candidate and best-selling author Sarah Palin.

Friends and Associates have reacted to the announcement: Martha Stewart has stated, “She’ll do another show, she’s evolving. She’s fabulous.” Ellen Degeneres has stated “Hey listen, I’m going to tell you some news you’re going to hear as soon as you go out into the world, when you leave here. Right before I came out here, I got a call from Oprah and she told me that she is announcing that next year will be her last year. It will be her 25th year, and she feels like it’s time for her to stop.”

Putting her own career into perspective, DeGeneres, 51, went on to say, “I don’t think I could be here without her. I think she has blazed a trail … She is an amazing woman.”

In terms of Winfrey’s legacy, “She will always be the Queen of Daytime Television,” said Ellen, “and she also said she is leaving me all of her money. I was like, thanks Oprah, thank you.”

People Magazine has reported, Winfrey, 55, whose current program reaches about 7 million viewers a day, is preparing to start her own cable channel. And while it has been widely rumored that she would bring her program to OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, a joint venture with Discovery Communications, on Friday’s Today show, during a news report on Winfrey’s impact on TV, it was said that there will be no Oprah show once she pulls the plug on the current program.

1. She’s pulling the plug on the show.

2. She’s going to have a lot more time to train.

3. I ain’t getting any faster.

4. My last shred of dignity has been a feeble belief that at least I could beat Oprah Winfrey in a marathon.

5. I cling to my backup plan — I can still kick Ellen Degeneres’ butt. Maybe.

According to CNN.com and TMZ.com, Oprah Winfrey is calling it quits.

The Oprah Winfrey Show will air for the last time, September 2011.

Tomorrow, Friday November 20, 2009 Oprah will break the news on her show.

So where does this leave all her fans?

I am pretty sure, they will still be devoted Oprah fans, but they just may turn to Ellen DeGeneres or The Tyra Show. Who knows!

Finding this information out is semi-upsetting, but we can’t  last forever. Oprah has effected so many people across the globe. Her efforts will not be forgotten.
