On the 24th of this month, Emblaze Mobile announced their new smartphone running on the relatively unknown Access Linux Platform (ALP). Developed from scratch in close cooperation with OS developers, the First ELSE have taken them two years to develop but the end result has turned out quite attractive.

Powered by the TI OMAP 3430 platform the First Else will share the same CPU and graphics accelerator with devices such as the iPhone 3GS, Nokia N900 and Samsung i8910 Omnia HD. The handset packs an impressive 3.5″ capacitive LCD touchscreen display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels.

The 5-megapixel camera of the First Else is able to capture 480p (which could either mean VGA or WVGA) video at 30fps. Network connectivity is perfectly covered, with both HSDPA and EDGE onboard.

The First ELSE has the Access Linux Platform (ALP) 3 in its core, which is LiMo compliant and has support for classic Palm OS and Java apps. But on top of ALP, ELSE Mobile have put a new UI called ELSE Intuition.

Here’s how it works in action. You can see they’ve revamped the “old-school idea” of a Main Menu and all you need to select an item is a single thumb Touch, Slide & Release action. They’ve called that concept sPlay.

The new UI is task-oriented and is supposed to deliver an unmatched user experience. Yet it seems that the whole press event was dedicated to it being able to outdo the iPhone and Android devices. However looking at those first screenshots we are almost willing to believe that the First Else will, in fact, try to push the envelope, rather than be content with beating the old dogs at their own game.

Else are also working on a self-branded media store to facilitate the distribution of multimedia content for the platform. Of course there will also be an App store (you can’t do without one these days) and the SDK will be made available at launch in Q2 of 2010. There’s no word however on how much it would cost.

A little backgrounder is definitely due when so many new names are involved. Access is the company developing the Access Linux Platform (ALP) for several years now.

So far, they’ve had two concurrent projects – Edelweiss and Monolith (the second one in cooperation with Sharp). Edelweis has even been close to launch in Russia last year and it was detailed in various news sources.

Anyways, since then, both projects have been remapped to produce smartphones some time in 2009 and since their results have not been actively advertised, we guess they’ve either been dumped or one of them has become the First ELSE.

Jeg er helt vild med kampagnen for den nye ELSE telefon. Hele budskabet er at vores liv skal være mere simpelt med teknologi. Else er en touch telefon, som skulle være vanvittig intuitiv og lækker. De kalder ELSE den “linux baserede drømmetelefon”. Telefonen skulle have sammen funktionalitets niveau som de førende Mp3 afspillere og GPS apperater, men samtidig være utrolig nem at bruge. Men det er retorikken i kampagnen jeg falder pladask for. Her sidder jeg og knokler på en rapport om hvor vigtigt brugervenlighed er og har længe undret mig over at ingen rigtig tager det alvorligt. Men umiddelbart ser det ud til at ELSE gør. Bliver spændende at se telefonen.

La gente de Pocket-lint tiene algunas imágenes e información bastante interesante y, al menos en la teoría, este OS debería funcionar bastante bien.

Como pueden observar, el sistema será semicircular y se podrá navegar a través de él moviendo el dedo. Cuando queramos ingresar a alguna aplicación simplemente tendremos que presionar sobre ella.

Este sistema promete, pero nada revolucionario.

También tendrá unos cuantos sensores que harán su trabajo. Uno de ellos es el que se activará cuando pongamos el móvil cerca de nuestra cara para que la pantalla táctil no presione nada raro como, eventualmente, sucede.

Tendrá una tecnología que además grabará los mensajes de voz en el mismo teléfono cuando no estemos disponibles. Las características de hardware que poseerá serán bastante convencionales: WiFi, 3G, GPS, una cámara de 5Mpix con la capacidad de grabar a 30fps y una pantalla táctil con una resolución de 854×480.

Si todo sale como la empresa estima, el primer móvil de ELSE se verá en el segundo cuarto del 2010 en Estados Unidos, Europa y Rusia.

Volviendo al First Else, será lanzado durante el segundo trimestre de 2010 y como decimos, vienen con ganas de cambiar las cosas, aunque juzga tú mismo (hay un par de vídeos tras el salto) si serán capaces de ello. aunque no hay nada que una buena aplicacion no pueda hacer (mejor dicho IMITAR).

This launches Q2 next year (summer) and all I can say is I hope the networks give these boys a fair shot. this promises to be everything the Palm Pre SHOULD be.

From Emblaze Mobile, located in Israel comes the Monolith Project. The idea of this project is to build a communications device with an never before seen graphic interface. As you can see from the following video it looks like they’ve succeeded. Monolith seamlessly integrates telephony and messaging , personal information management, push-technology information and media, mobile office access, GPS navigation and location based services, web browsing, mobile media player, and more.

Malik “Kill-Em Ladin” Hasan

Malik Nidal Hasan was the name of the shooter at Ft. Hood today.   Has anyone else noticed the first two names are Kilam (“kill-em“) Ladin backwards?  Was this some sort of veiled message?

Fox just confirmed yesterday that Hasan was a convert to Islam- which means he may have changed and/or perhaps picked his Islamic name.  Yet, Fox interviewed Malik’s brother who had the same last name.  (If he did convert and change his name) I find it hard to believe that Hasan, being a psychiatrist, would not put much thought into its meaning.

Let us also remember that November 5 is also the date of another historical/attempted assassination.

Though I can’t imagine how, I would not be surprised to learn that the date as well as the shooter’s name is significant.

In corporate discipleship today Shane Barnard revealed his heart on an issue that wrecks so many lives, in both men and women. This is issue is lust, one of the “7 deadly sins” that Paul and Aaron covered in their “Killers” series. I think a lot of us were moved by Shane’s vulnerability and honesty; to be in his situation as a recording artist and to reveal so much about yourself says a lot about his character and of the leadership of the church I’m at.

Lust creeps in and takes over our hearts in a split second, and that is what makes it so dangerous. It starts small and then grows and grows until it is much to big a problem to be faced alone. And if it can’t be faced alone it must be fought with others, and here is the tricky part. It seems that many people, especially people who are in leadership, have this need to impress and to hide their own faults, at least as far as I can tell. And if this is the case, they will have a very dificult time being open and honest about a struggle with lust.

This must mean, then, that lust isn’t the root problem. I think the root problem mght be pride; we lust because we want something from another person. We allow thoughts to linger because we enjoy them. Our pride tells us its ok (once again, “our pride lies to us) and we listen even though we understand it is wrong. I’ve known people who have traveled that road of lust. Starting with pornography, it will usually lead to other, more severe, forms of lust and eventually might cause horrific things to happen.

For example, Shane Barnard mentioned an old friend of his who had a serious issue of lust. He began looking at pornography, then moved on to having an affair on his wife, and ended up molesting their two-year old son. Someone else has told me that before they accepted Christ they would sometimes fantasize about committing rape after having been involved in watching pornography. It starts small and then grows into something much, much more damaging.

Lust is so dangerous! It can ruin lives, and it will if left unchecked. The talk we had with Shane was a huge eye opener; stay pure, resist temptation, and stop the cycle early on before real and lasting damage is done to yourself and others.
