What started as a day of learning and challenges ends on a happy social note. It is Saturday and after a long day online I had to write this story so hang with me.

Many of us are under pressure to find and/or keep our jobs these days so it can become all about us. This is a story about helping others, about giving back, about mentoring the next generation of leaders.

In my professional life I have met many amazing people. Some you think you will only work with and never see or speak to again. This does not have to be true if you care and want to give back.

My story starts with my first trip to India in 2003. I was traveling there on behalf of my company at the time (Elsevier.com). We (Rick Komyanek and I) were going there to evaluate several vendors and would be meeting up with several co-workers the next evening. We arrived on Saturday night to get settled in after coming from the states. We actually arrived about 1:00am on Saturday night (Sunday morning) and were scheduled to be picked up at 7:00am for a day trip to the Taj Mahal. After getting a few hours of sleep we went down to the front desk to meet our “escorts” for the day. It was there I ran into Rajat Pandit (rajatpandit.com) from HCL (HCL.in). Honestly, I did not think twice about Rajat at the time. He did a wonderful job getting us to the Taj and back so we had a great day. He helped us get from New Delhi to Agra and back which is quite a long day. Rick and I told him our observations as we navigated the roads between the two cities. We all laughed about the cultural “differences” between what we were used to and what is normal in India. I honestly thought that was the last time I would see or hear from Rajat.

As we progressed with our negotiations with HCL and eventually started to build up their team and transfer work to them, Rajat was assigned to our account in London. I was pleased to see a familiar face and glad that he quickly became part of the overall team in London. Through my periodic site visits I always tried to see Rajat because of the energy and enthusiasm he brought to work each day. This relationship lasted for several years until both he and I decided to part with our respective companies and seek greener pastures. Although we parted on good terms, the distance between us seemed like a huge obstacle (he being in London while I was based in the States).

Enter the advent of Social Media sites such as Facebook (www.facebook.com) and Twitter (www.twitter.com). As I jumped into these new sites, I started to build out my circle of friends and followers working my way through contacts I made over the years. I was lucky to find Rajat out on Facebook and started to chat with him here and there. This went on for a few years and was a nice way to “chat” but nothing really became of it (from my perspective). Rajat moved onto Yahoo and a couple of other leading technology companies and continued to hone his technical skills. Here is where the story gets interesting (or at least to the point of he post). As I stated above, Rajat is a very sharp programmer / architect. As such, he was helping this former engineer (moi) overcome some learning hurdles with some of the newer internet technologies. Always willing and helpful, he would walk me through this and that with a smile on his face (and in his voice). I was happy for the help and he seemed more than eager to offer it. All was good.

Today, Rajat asked me for some career advice. I was honored for him to ask me because you never know where someone is that appreciates your experience and consul. We share a similar background albeit separated by a few years (his just a few years my junior). We both come from the technical ranks and eventually face decisions as to where to go in your future career progressions. Rajat asked how I made the transition from a Systems Engineer to being a leader in IT an organization. As I stated above, I was honored to offer him my advice on what it takes to be a leader, both in general and in an IT organization. In addition I was happy to relay the specifics on how I moved from being seen as a programmer to being thought of as a leader.

Leadership is about a vision, it’s about a story of where you’ve been, where you are and where you should be going. It’s about selling the vision of the future, a better place for all the right reasons. Leadership is about confidence, an understanding of the business/technical issues and how your vision will bridge them to the other side. It’s about leading from the front, rolling up your sleeves and showing/doing what it takes to implement tactical and strategic change. It’s about taking calculated risks and delivering the rewards from them. It’s about inspiring others to stretch to the next level, to grow, to be challenged, to be scared and to overcome.

I’m glad I had the time today to start on this journey. I did not expect to end up here however am very glad I did. I took the time and hope it pays off in spades for Rajat (blog.rajatpandit.com). Have a great journey my friend.

His book From Vocational to Higher Education: An International Perspective was published by McGraw-Hill last year. Gavin’s entry sheds light on a new ranking initiative that needs to be situated within the broad wave of contemporary rankings – and bibliometrics more generally – that are being used to analyze, legitimize, critique, promote, not to mention extract revenue from. Our thanks to Gavin for the illuminating contribution below.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It has been a busy time for world institutional rankings watchers recently. Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Institute of Higher Education published its academic ranking of world universities (ARWU) for 2009. The institute’s 2009 rankings include its by now familiar ranking of 500 institutions’ overall performance and the top 100 institutions in each of five broad fields: natural sciences and mathematics, engineering/technology and computer sciences, life and agriculture sciences, clinical medicine and pharmacy, and social sciences. This year Dr. Liu and his colleagues have added rankings of the top 100 institutions in each of five subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science and economics/business.
Times Higher Education announced that over the next few months it will develop a new method for its world university rankings which in future will be produced with Thomson Reuters. Thomson Reuters’ contribution will be guided by Jonathan Adams (Adams’ firm, Evidence Ltd, was recently acquired by Thomson Reuters).
And a new ranking has been published, SCImago institutions rankings: 2009 world report. This is a league table of research institutions by various factors derived from Scopus, the database of the huge multinational publisher Elsevier. SCImago’s institutional research rank is distinctive in including with higher education institutions government research organisations such as France’s Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, health organisations such as hospitals, and private and other organisations. Only higher education institutions are considered here. The ranking was produced by the SCImago Research Group, a Spain-based research network “dedicated to information analysis, representation and retrieval by means of visualisation techniques”.
SCImago’s rank is very useful in not cutting off at the top 200 or 500 universities, but in including all organisations with more than 100 publications indexed in Scopus in 2007. It therefore includes 1,527 higher education institutions in 83 countries. But even so, it is highly selective, including only 16% of the world’s estimated 9,760 universities, 76% of US doctoral granting universities, 65% of UK universities and 45% of Canada’s universities. In contrast all of New Zealand’s universities and 92% of Australia’s universities are listed in SCImago’s rank. Some 38 countries have seven or more universities in the rank.
SCImago derives five measures from the Scopus database: total outputs, cites per document (which are heavily influenced by field of research as well as research quality), international collaboration, normalised Scimago journal rank and normalised citations per output. This discussion will concentrate on total outputs and normalised citations per output.
Together these measures show that countries have been following two broad paths to supporting their research universities. One group of countries in northern continental Europe around Germany have supported a reasonably even development of their research universities, while another group of countries influenced by the UK and the US have developed their research universities much more unevenly. Both seem to be successful in support research volume and quality, at least as measured by publications and citations.
Volume of publications
Because a reasonable number of countries have several higher education institutions listed in SCImago’s rank it is possible to consider countries’ performance rather than concentrate on individual institutions as the smaller ranks encourage. I do this by taking the average of the performance of each country’s universities. The first measure of interest is the number of publications each university has indexed in Scopus over the five years from 2003 to 2007, which is an indicator of the volume of research. The graph in figure 1 shows the mean number of outputs for each country’s higher education research institutions. It shows only countries which have more than six universities included in SCImago’s rank, which leaves out 44 countries and thus much of the tail in institutions’ performance.
Figure 1: mean of universities’ outputs for each country with > 6 universities ranked
These data are given in table 1. The first column gives the number of higher education institutions each country has ranked in SCImago institutions rankings (SIR): 2009 world report. The second column shows the mean number of outputs indexed in Scopus for each country’s higher education research institutions from 2003 to 2007. The next column shows the standard deviation of the number of outputs for each country’s research university.
The third column in table 1 shows the coefficient of variation, which is the standard deviation divided by the mean and multiplied by 100. This is a measure of the evenness of the distribution of outputs amongst each country’s universities. Thus, the five countries whose universities had the highest average number of outputs indexed in Scopus from 2003 to 2007 – the Netherlands, Israel, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden – also had a reasonably low coefficient of variation below 80. This indicates that research volume is spread reasonably evenly amongst those countries’ universities. In contrast, Canada which had the sixth highest average number of outputs also has a reasonably high coefficient of variation of 120, indicating an uneven distribution of outputs amongst Canada’s research universities.
The final column in table 1 shows the mean of SCImago’s international collaboration score, which is a score of the proportions of the institution’s outputs jointly authored with someone from another country. The US’ international collaboration is rather low because US authors collaborate more often with authors in other institutions within the country.
Source: SCImago Research Group (2009) SCImago institutions rankings (SIR): 2009 world report.
Citations per paper by field
We next examine citations per paper by field of research, which is an indicator of the quality of research. This is the ratio between the average citations per publication of an institution and the world number of citations per publication over the same time frame and subject area. SCImago says it computed this ratio using the method established by Sweden’s Karolinska Intitutet which it called the ‘Item oriented field normalized citation score average’. A score of 0.8 means the institution is cited 20% below average and 1.3 means the institution is cited 30% above average.
Figure 2 shows mean normalised citations per paper for each country’s higher education research institutions from 2003 to 2007, again showing only countries which have more than six universities included in SCImago’s rank. The graph for an indicator of research quality in figure 2 is similar in shape to the graph of research volume in figure 1.
Figure 2: mean of universities’ normalised citations per paper for each country with > 6 universities ranked
Table 2 shows countries with more than six higher education research institutions ranked by their institutions’ mean normalised citations. This measure distinguishes more sharply between institutions than volume of outputs – the coefficient of variations for countries’ mean institutions normalised citations are higher than for number of publications. Nonetheless, several countries with high mean normalised citations have an even performance amongst their universities on this measure – Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Austria, France, Finland and New Zealand.
Finally, I wondered whether countries which had a reasonably even performance of their research universities by volume and quality of publications reflected a more equal society. To test this I obtained from the Central Intelligence Agency’s (2009) World Factbook the Gini index of the distribution of family income within a country. A country with a Gini index of 0 would have perfect equality in the distribution of family income whereas a country with perfect inequality in its distribution of family would have a Gini index of 100. There is a modest correlation of 0.37 between a country’s Gini index and its coefficient of variation for both publications and citations.
Table 2: countries with > 6 institutions ranked by institutions’ normalised citations per output
Sources: SCImago Research Group (2009) SCImago institutions rankings (SIR): 2009 world report; Central Intelligence Agency (2009) The world factbook.
Conclusion
SCImago’s institutions research rank is sufficiently comprehensive to support comparisons between countries’ research higher education institutions. It finds two patterns amongst countries whose research universities have a high average volume and quality of research publications. One group of countries has a fairly even performance of their research universities, presumably because they have had fairly even levels of government support. This group is in northern continental Europe and includes Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and Finland. The other group of countries also has a high average volume and quality of research publications, but spread much more unevenly between universities. This group includes the US, the UK and Canada.
This finding is influenced by the measure I chose to examine countries’ performance, the average of their research universities’ performance. Other results may have been found using another measure of countries’ performance, such as the number of universities a country has in the top 100 or 500 of research universities normalised by gross domestic product. But such a measure would not reflect a country’s overall performance of their research universities, but only the performance of its champions. Whether one is interested in a country’s overall performance or just the performance of its champions depends on whether one believes more benefit is gained from a few outstanding performers or several excellent performers. That would usefully be the subject of another study.
Apakah Anda sudah mati-matian menjelajahi Google dan tidak bisa menemukan paper riset yang Anda inginkan? Ataukah Anda mesti mencari referensi paper-paper berkualitas yang dapat menunjang kemajuan riset dan penelitian Anda? Atau mungkin Anda seseorang yang haus akan perkembangan riset paling mutakhir yang dimuat di jurnal-jurnal kelas dunia seperti Nature, Science, The Lancet, dan jurnal-jurnal teknis lainnya?
Memang, sangat disayangkan, riset di Indonesia belum ditunjang oleh ketersediaan jurnal-jurnal ilmiah berkualitas. Padahal keberadaan jurnal-jurnal ilmiah inilah tonggak kemajuan riset di Nusantara. Di sisi lain, jurnal-jurnal internasional men-charge biaya yang tidak tanggung-tanggung untuk akses bahkan ke hanya 1 artikel. Coba lihat saja Elsevier, dengan produk Sciencedirect yang mencakup lebih dari 60% populasi jurnal ilmiah seluruh dunia, akan mengenakan biaya lebih dari 30 US$ (lebih dari Rp.300 ribu) per artikel. Mereka menerbitkan lebih dari 2000 jurnal riset, yang biaya langganan per jurnal untuk kategori Institusi (misal Perpustakaan sebuah universitas di Indonesia) bisa mencapai jutaan rupiah. Bayangkan saja apabila ada puluhan atau ratusan jurnal yang ingin dilanggan oleh institusi di Indonesia. Itulah sebabnya, cukup masuk akal apabila kita mengalami kesulitan akses jurnal-jurnal ilmiah berkualitas.
Walaupun demikian, beberapa jurnal seperti Elsevier, secara periodik, mereka menyediakan akses gratis ke beberapa edisi tertentu, yang secara berkala akan mereka ubah. Sialnya, seringkali ketika kita membutuhkan jurnal edisi tertentu, malah jurnal tersebut tidak bisa diakses (alias mesti membayar). Nah, di sinilah kami mengumpulkan jurnal-jurnal tersebut dan menyediakannya bagi Anda!
Hanya dengan Rp. 10 ribu per artikel, Anda bisa mendapatkan artikel riset yang Anda inginkan!! Kami akan mencarikan melalui koleksi puluhan ribu artikel riset (file .pdf) yang kami miliki. Murah, Nyaman, Cepat, dan Praktis!
Cuando en la Biblioteca recibimos la propuesta del Departamento de Microbiologia para adquirir la “Encyclopedia of Microbiology          (Third Edition)”, en principio dudamos un poco. El coste era bastante elevado -primer handicap-, y además está en inglés -muchos alumnos se resisten a leer en otro idioma y otros sencillamente descartan tal posibilidad-. Así que devolvimos la pelota al Departamento, pidiendo a los profesores que nos “convencieran” con todos los argumentos favorables que pudieran encontrar.
La verdad es que estos han sido irrebatibles: autores prestigiosos, temas muy interesantes, revisiones, útil para profesores y alumnos, materiales adicionales, enlaces a los textos completos de los artículos que referencia … En definitiva, que como no se nos ocurrían más objeciones, la hemos suscrito y desde este blog recomendamos encarecidamente su uso.
ماقله علمی چیست ؟ یک مقاله علمی (scientific paper) عبارت است از یک تحقیق در ارتباط با یک موضوع ( مشخص و در بسیاری از موارد موضوع‌های جدید ) و بیان مشکلات طرح و ارائه پیشنهاد برای رفع مشکلات موجود در مسئله.
بطور معمول مقاله‌های علمی در هر زمینه‌ای پیدا می‌شود و در کشورهای مختلف یکی از منابعی که باعث بالا رفتن و یا پایین آمدن سطح دانش یک کشور می‌شود همین تعداد ارائه مقالات علمی آن کشور است. ( اگر دقت کرده باشید خیلی وقتها در اخبار گفته می شود که امسال ۳۸۰ مقاله علمی در دنیا ارائه کردیم ).
بخش‌های مختلف یک مقاله علمی
یک مقاله علمی دارای :
یک موضوع است که معمولا انتخاب موضوع بسته به تجربه شخص در مقاله نویسی و نیز دید شخص نسبت به مسائل کاریش می‌تواند متفاوت باشد، خیلی از مواقع حتی اگر کار بر روی مقاله هم بخوبی صورت گرفته باشد اما در انتخاب موضوع ( چیزی که باید بر روی آن تحقیق شود ) دقت نشود، معمولا مقاله مورد قبول واقع نمی‌شود. از طرف دیگر مقاله دارای یک عنوان است ( که بی تردید انتخاب مناسب این عنوان از مهمترین کارهایی است که باید انجام شود ) این عنوان معمولا باعث علاقمند کردن هیئت ژوری برای مطالعه دقیقتر این مقاله می‌شود.
IEEE Logo
یک مقاله همچنین دارای یک مقدمه است . همچنین از بخش‌های مهم دیگر باید به بخش طرح سوال و نیز بدنه اصلی مقاله و همچنین ارایه راه‌کارها و در پایان نتیجه گیری می‌باشد. یک مقاله می تواند دارای بخش‌های جانبی دیگری نیز باشد برای مثال  امضای یک استاد دانشگاه و یا  یک فرد معتبر که با این کار دروقاع آن شخص حقیقی یا حقوقی صحت مطالب و ارزش مقاله شما را تایید کرده است.
چه مراحلی را برای ایجاد یک مقاله علمی باید طی کنیم
معمولا برای نگارش یک مقاله علمی جدای از تحقیقات و نگارش مطلب باید به این موارد دقت بسیار زیادی بشود:
متنی که می‌نویسید بخصوص اگر متن به زبان انگلیسی و برای ارائه در کشورهای خاجری آماده می‌شود باید با لغات آکادمیک نوشته شود و جمله بندی صحیح داشته باشد، چه بسیار مقالات مفیدی که با کلمه Poor English و یا کلمات مشابه روبرو شده و از سد هیئت داوری رد نشده است.
مقاله بخوانید : پیش از نگارش یک مقاله، مقالات مشابهی را مطالعه کنید تا بتوانید دید صحیح از نوشتن یک مقاله بدست بیاورید، بدون شک اگر مقاله ای ندیده باشید ، مقاله خوبی نمی توانید تهیه کنید. توجه داشته باشید که معمولا تهیه یک مقاله علمی کار بسیار سختی است و باید از یک جای معتبر ( که لینک آنها را پایین آورده ام ) یک حساب کاربری داشته باشدی که معمولا قیمت های پاینی هم ندارند. معمولا در دانشگاه های کشور و در شبکه داخلی آنها یک حساب کاربری هست که شما می توانید بصورت رایگان از آن به این سایت ها وصل شده و مقاله مورد نظرتان را دانلود کنید. و یا از کسی که حساب کاربری دارد بخواهید که یک مقاله خاص را برای شما بگیرد.
از جاهای کوچکتر شروع کنید : خیلی وقتها باید برای رسیدن به یک هدف بالا از قدم های کوچکتر آغاز کرد. و نوشتن یک مقاله علمی بی تردید یکی از همان کارهاست که باید پله به پله انجام شود. برای مثال ابتدا در روزنامه ها و مجلات داخلی یک مقاله با زبان فارسی بنویسید.
پیش از ارسال یک مقاله را به یک کنفرانس بفرستید : خیلی وقتها ( بخصوص زمانی که برای یک جای معتبر مقاله می فرستید ) باید خودتان هم شخص معتبری باشید پس با ارسال یک مقاله به یک کنفرانس و بیان آن مطلب در یک کنفرانس عمومی ، از تحقیقات خودتان دفاع کنید و نشان دهید که مطالبی که نوشته‌اید ، صحیح هستند. شرکت در کنفرانس های بین المللی کمی برا ایرانی ها هزینه بر هست و معمولا کاری که انجام می شود این است که یک شخص از یک دانشگاه از طرح چندین و چند نفر در فلان کنفرانس دفاع می کند واین کار هیچ مشکلی ندارد. نهایتا طرح به اسم خود شماست و هیچ چیزی به اسم دفاع کننده تمام نمی شود. شما برای قدردانی می توانید نام او را در انتهای مقاله بیاورید و اگر هم نیاورید هیچ مشکلی نیست. درست مثل این است که شما راجع به نظرات فروید در دانشگاه درس می خوانید و این مطلب نشان نمی دهد که استاد شما در دانشکاه هم همان آقای فروید است و همان قدر برای مقاله زحمت کشیده است.
مقاله را فقط برای یک جا ارسال کنید :
نکته ای که شاید برای شما عجیب باشد این است که یک مقاله را در یک زمان باید فقط برای یک محل ارسال کنید و اگر محلی که برای آن مقاله ارسال کرده اید مطلع شود که مقاله را برای جای دیگری ارسال کرده اید بدون تردید مقاله شما را رد خواهد کرد. معمولا از ارسال تا جواب پذیرش و یا رد یک مقاله علمی چیزی حدود سه تا شش ماه زمان می برد. پس صبور باشید. نهایتا اگر مقاله شما در یک محل رد شد می توانید محل های دیگری را نیز امتحان کنید و حتی اکر پذیرفت هم شد می توانید برای جای دیگری دوباره ارسال کنید.
مقاله را برای کجا بفرستیم
معمولا بسته به رشته فعالیت منابع و مراجع معتبر متفاوت است. اما در زمینه کامپیوتر ، معمولا مراجع زیر از بهترین ها هستند. گرچه هوز در این بخش منابع خوب دیگری هست که من شناسایی نکردم و خواهش می کنم که اگر شما منبع خوب دیگری می شناسید به من هم معرفی کنید.
IEEE  : انجمن برق و الکترونیک آمریکا که در زمینه الکترونیک و کامپیوتر بی تردید در حکم بهترین مراجع است.
(…) What should the Americans and the Europeans do?  Above all, they must not try to save the regime.  They must avoid playing the role of paramedics who want to provide a blood transfusion to Khamenei, aka The Camel. The suffering is terrible, but it is not a ritual slaughter.  It’s simple justice.
Khamenei staggers, like a camel being ritually slaughtered
by Afshin Ellian
Islamic dietary rules require that animals that provide food for the faithful be slaughtered in a very specific way.   Muslims are allowed to eat camel meat, but how can you kill a camel according to ritual halal rules, which specify the precise manner in which the camel’s throat is cut?  A camel does not permit human beings to kill him according to the religious requirements, but if a camel has not been killed in the ritual way then one is not allowed to eat it. What to do?
The first Muslims solved the problem by cunning.  Instead of attacking him, the slaughterers inserted a sharp pin in the camel’s neck. For a moment the animal feels pain but thereafter he feels nothing. Meanwhile, the blood slowly drains from his body. After a while the animal does not feel well. The only way to save the camel is by a blood transfusion, but if that is not done – a process unthinkable fifteen hundred years ago – then the animal is beyond rescue. After a while the camel slowly descends on his front knees and this the time to cut its throat in the name of Allah.
This is the present condition of the Islamic regime led by Khamenei. I did not invent this metaphor; it is widely used these days by Iranians watching the supreme leader’s public and private behavior.   Khamenei is losing blood, and Iranians are waiting for him to slowly go down on his front knees and to fall down.  He has been punctured by the months of demonstrations and the nightly chant of “Death to the Dictator,” and he is visibly staggering.
On August 26 [2009] Khamenei delivered an exceptionally important speech in Tehran. In this speech he demonstrated the weakness of a regime that slowly begins to perceive its own doom: About the Kahrizak detention center, where demonstrators were raped and tortured to death, Khamenei said the following: “Mistakes have been made, laws have been violated and crimes have been committed. The perpetrators have to be treated with a hard fist”.  And he decried the regime’s violent acts against students:  “The attacks on the student dormitories at the campus have to be criminally investigated”. Fascinating! Khamenei, whose pronouncements were recently hailed as Divinely inspired, is now publicly speaking of crimes committed by his regime on basis of his own instructions.
Khamenei even demanded the trial of the members of the security forces and the  Basjii (militia) who committed these crimes: “They have done a lot for this country, but this does not mean that the offenders should not be tried. The offenders must be prosecuted.“
To be sure, he threw a very small bone to those who have been loyal to him:  “but the case of Kahrizak and other cases should not be confused with the great injustice committed against the regime. The  desecrated honor of the regime is worse than the events at Kahrizak.”
Mr. Khamenei, is this not a bit stupid? Kahrizak, where the young Persians were tortured, raped and murdered by the jihadist hordes, is less important than the honor of these rapists and murderers?
What is the current opinion of Khamenei about the demonstrators and the leaders of the opposition? Do they still work for foreign intelligence services? Does the majority of the demonstrators still consist of spies working for the CIA, MI6 and the Mosad? No, the great leader has to admit that his people are not agents of the enemy.
“The judiciary should not base its judgment on rumors but on hard evidence. I do not accuse the leaders of recent events (read Mousavi and others) to be in the service of England or America. It is not proven that they worked for America or England. Everything had been long been planned by the enemy, but perhaps they (the opposition) did not know this. Those who had designed the unrest did not know whether it would work. They used all their options [the media, internet] but they failed.“
For weeks, Khamenei, Ahmadinezhad and a plethora of high officials have claimed that the opposition leaders were spies for the West. Until August 26th, they were collectively tried for espionage and involvement in an international conspiracy against the Islamic republic.
Suddenly they are not spies. How can we understand this? Khamenei warned students to be careful. They should not use trivial matters as an alibi for the creation of unrest at the universities as that could cause the universities to be closed for a while. Yes, this is where it is all about: in about four weeks schools and universities are to open and there lies the problem, quite possibly the survival of the regime itself. What is going on in the court of Khamenei?
Reliable sources report me the following straight from the heart of the regime (yes, leakage again):
In recent days Khamenei has been confronted with facts and analysis by Rafsanjani and others. He was shown names and pictures of raped and murdered protesters. He received reports that several elements of the Revolutionary Guard (RG) can no longer handle this.
After the opening of the academic year, when 14 million students return to the campuses, unrest will increase. Security forces will only for a period limited to a few weeks be able to address intensive conflicts in Tehran and other cities. The show trials did not have the expected effect. Nobody believes in these trials.
The general economic situation is disastrous. Gasoline supplies are only sufficient for a period of about 70 days in case of a potential international gasoline boycott. Today [August 27], Mr. Ahmad Tavakoli, a member of the Iranian parliament and a follower of Ahmadinejad, stated that 200,000 employees of at least 50 factories have not been paid for more than three months
In the next major conflict with the people, parts of the Revolutionary Guards and the army will remain neutral. If protests continue, they will chose the side of the people.
In addition to this Khamenei was also confronted with a very secret message from Najaf [Iraq]. In this message Khamenei was seriously warned and criticized by Grand Ayatollah Sistani, the most important religious leader of all Shiites. The division between the ayatollahs is unprecedented.  And the highly respected Iranian Ayatollah Montazeri has just declared that the regime is neither Islamic, nor a republic.  In other words, it is illegitimate.
How will the Iranian people react to Khamenei’s speech? The comparison with the Iranian revolution of 1979 is obvious: during the first months of the revolution the shah had also accused his own people of crimes, trying to win the support of the masses.  But it was too late. Like the shah thirty years ago,  Khamenei has lost all popular legitimacy: once the supreme leader totally reversed his position on the nature of the uprising, he can no longer command authority.
A few weeks ago, he openly asked the security forces to suppress the demonstrators. Now he openly speaks of crimes committed by his security forces. According to Jahan News, a pro-government news site, Mortasavi, the notorious prosecutor of the Revolutionary Court, has been fired.  This suggests that other top officials will be sacrificed.  But mere changes in personnel are no longer sufficient to rescue the dying camel.
What should the Americans and the Europeans do?  Above all, they must not try to save the regime.  They must avoid playing the role of paramedics who want to provide a blood transfusion to Khamenei, aka The Camel. The suffering is terrible, but it is not a ritual slaughter.  It’s simple justice.
I gotta hand it to the criminal mind. It is always thinking of new ways to separate people from their money. The latest (and first in medical publishing that I know) is a variant of the Nigerian scam, and it uses Elsevier as the bait. The email from “Chief editor” Jochem Koos (hey, that’s a Dutch name, right? It must be legit…) is looking for reviewers of manuscripts submitted to Elsevier. And the pay (PAY?) is good – $30 per page of manuscript reviewed. All you have to do is pass the screening of your credentials, and pay $100 for the screening process. What a deal! You get back that $100 and more with your first review.
Elsevier is aware of this scam, and has posted a web page warning people about it, but I’m surprised it hasn’t received much publicity. Librarians might want to warn their faculty, although it is hard to imagine even the greenest, most naive instructor falling for this. A document accompanying the email is reproduced below, complete with spelling errors and mangled English.
A Comprehensive Reference Book for Information Technology, Computer Science, Electronic, Communication and Electrical Engineering Professionals
Title: EMC for Product Designers
Author: Tim Williams
Elsevier [Fourth Edition, 2007] 498 pages
ISBN – 13: 978-0-75-068170-4
ISBN – 10: 0-750-68170-5
Most of us consider a number of factors, exoteric and esoteric, while designing [or selecting] our homes and in the configuration of the numerous modern technological devices and domestic appliances, most of them electrical and electronic, therein.
Recently I saw a programme on TV where a Vastu Shastra expert was advising viewers not only regarding the various aspects of designing and building living environments that are in harmony with the physical and metaphysical forces but also specifying optimal locations and layouts for various electrical and electronic appliances and devices in both residential homes and workplaces.
I listened with intriguing interest as he gave precise directions and specified exact locations for positioning of Televisions, Computers, Communication Devices, Microwave Ovens, Music systems and other appliances, and fascinated by the congruence between principles and aspects of Vastu and Electromagnetic Compatibility [EMC] and wondered whether the expert in reality was actually an EMC Design Engineer in addition to being a Vastu Shastra Specialist.
When you design or select or configure your house or office I am sure you consider various aesthetic, architectural, financial, utilitarian, geographical, interior and exterior design and other practical aspects, maybe even incorporate the principles of Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, but do you give even a fleeting thought to EMC?
In today’s world with the increasing use of electrical, communication, electronic and information technologies we are under continual exposure to Electromagnetic Field [ EMF ], both inside and outside our homes, in our workplaces and even in the open wherever we go, radiating from radiating from electricity power lines, household wiring, microwave ovens, computers, monitors, televisions, communication devices, cellular phones, electrical, electronic and IT appliances.
“Electro-pollution” is an increasingly serious form of Environment Pollution and merits serious consideration, as much as, if not more than, other well-known forms of pollution.
Electro-pollution seems to be omnipresent. Apart from hazards to our health, Electromagnetic Interference [ EMI ] is detrimental to the proper functioning of most electrical, electronic, IT, ITES, ICT, communication and technology-based systems and may cause malfunctions and even potentially disastrous and fatal accidents.
The book being reviewed – EMC for Product Designers by Tim Williams – is one of the most comprehensive reference books I have read on the subject of the Design Management aspects of Electromagnetic Interference and Electromagnetic Compatibility [ EMI / EMC ].
The book comprises sixteen chapters arranged in three parts:
Legislation and Standards,
Testing, and
Design
The author lucidly covers most micro and macro aspects of EMC Management in meticulous detail.
The logical sequence of topics, clear diagrams, tables and illustrations facilitate easy understanding of this complicated subject.
The Design Checklist, interesting Case Studies and useful mathematical formulae in the appendices and the extensive bibliography add value to this reference book.
Whilst the earlier chapters provide an excellent understanding of the EMC Standards and the basic theoretical principles of EMI / EMC, the “meat” of the book lies in the chapters on Systems EMC and EMC Management which encapsulate all relevant facets of EMC in a holistic manner.
I wish the author had included a detailed chapter on Electromagnetic Health Hazards and mitigation techniques. This most vital topic concerning all of us humans seems to have not been accorded the due importance it deserves and I hope the author presents a more holistic and systemic view of EMC and includes a comprehensive chapter on pertinent aspects of Bio-electromagnetics, Thermal and Athermal EMR Hazards and their mitigation in the next edition.
I commend this book – it is an excellent reference book for Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunication and IT Engineers and Managers, Designers, Students, practising professionals in the field and a useful addition for all engineering and technical libraries.
