Michelle Obama Takes Girls to London for Fish and Chips

A Boeing 757 and a fleet of armored cars for Michelle’s sightseeing tour!

On Sunday, President Obama flew back to the United States on Air Force One. His wife, two daughters and her mother did a bit of shopping in Paris before taking their own Boeing 757 (C-32) over to London to do some sightseeing. We all remember Obama’s admonishment to corporate CEOs in February:

“You can’t get corporate jets, you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime.”

Apparently that doesn’t apply to his wife.

The London Times opened its description of Michelle’s visit this way:

Motorcycle outriders, armoured Chevrolets and bullet-headed men in raincoats criss-crossed London yesterday as Michelle Obama and her daughters spent a second day on an unofficial visit to the capital.

The Times went on to describe that when Michelle and the girls arrived at Westminster Abbey, the building was closed to tourists with people already in told to “wait against the wall.” An American visiting the Abbey said “Right then I knew it was probably someone from our ‘royal family’.”

Michelle’s motorcade shut down the  London street above as the First Lady of the World and her children go for Fish and Chips at a pub in  Mayfair . The entourage inside the restaurant was 15 people while dozens more wait outside. Include the dozens of Air Force personnel to fly and service the plane, embassy personnel and other staff and we are talking about a serious expenditure of taxpayer dollars.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans have lost their jobs and won’t be able to take their family on a summer holiday. Despite their circumstances they’ll still be expected to fork over the tax dollars to pay for Michelle’s trip!

Many left-behind parents are told that the Hague Convention will bring about the return of their abducted children. Some authorities say that if your child is abducted, you should follow procedures outlined by the Hague, but we don’t agree.

Until 1980, there was no international system in place to help parents recover abducted children who had been taken to other nations. The Hague Convention attempted to create one, but it doesn’t work. If you take the time to read the well-intentioned text of the Hague, you’ll see its many flaws.

In our opinion, it’s not worth the large amounts of money, time and trouble to hire an attorney to try using the Hague Convention to get your child back. You aren’t likely to get him or her back — and even worse, the abducting parent could be “legitimized” by the courts in another nation.

Under the Hague Convention, a case must be filed in the country where the abductor has taken the child. The courts of that country tend to render their decisions in favor of their countrymen, as the Hague Convention focuses on residency, not citizenship. There is little concern for the fact that the child is a citizen of the country from which he or she was abducted, or for the possible detrimental effect on the child.

Even if the child was born in your country, if that child is found to be a “habitual resident” by the courts in another country, the child may be ordered to be returned to that country.

This underscores the need to act quickly.

Few, if any, of the Hague signatory countries are going to send anyone out to physically recover your child for you. Embassy officials will check on the child’s welfare, if it is known where the child is and if the abducting parent lets them.

As soon as abducting parents are aware that that they’ve been located, they’ll usually disappear with the children again.

And about hiring lawyers

You need to be aware that a great amount of money has been spent on lawyers in foreign abduction cases. The unfortunate fact is that they, most often, can’t practice in the foreign courts and are required to hire associate lawyers in the foreign country.

Note: they often have no qualifications or experience working with child abduction cases.

Presentation of professor Ilias Wrazas book (Warsaw 5.11.2009)

The book of professor Ilias Wrazas

in Warsaw, held the event entitled “Greek Temptations” (Kuszenie Grekow), on Thursday November 5^th.
Ilias Vrazas, professor of modern Greek literature in Wroclaw University, presented his book “The Saviour of God. Tempations of Nikos Kazantzakis”. The book is focusing on Kazantzakis’ “Askitiki” (Salvatores Dei).
The presentation was moderated by the translator of Greek and English literature Ewa T. Szyler.
Following the presentation, Ilias Vrazas (song, guitar) and Isidoros Papadakis (violoncello, bouzuki) performed songs by contemporary Greek composers (Theodorakis, Markopoulos, etc.).
The opening of Michalis Hrisoulidis’ drawings exhibition was also held on the evening of the event. Michalis Hrisoulidis is a painter and stage designer, whose work “Thanatos” illustrates Ilias Vrazas book.

Το Γραφείο Τύπου και Επικοινωνίας Βαρσοβίας – σε συνεργασία με το Αυστριακό Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο της Βαρσοβίας- οργάνωσαν την Πέμπτη 5 Νοεμβρίου 2009 εκδήλωση με τίτλο «Ελληνικοί Πειρασμοί» (Kuszenie Grekow).
Ο Ηλίας Βράζας, καθηγητής σύγχρονης ελληνικής λογοτεχνίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Wroclaw, παρουσίασε το βιβλίο του «Ο Σωτήρας του Θεού. Οι πειρασμοί του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη», βιβλίο που πραγματεύεται την «Ασκητική» του Καζαντζάκη (Salvatores Dei).
Την παρουσίαση διηύθυνε η μεταφραστρια Ελληνικής και Αγγλικής λογοτεχνίας Ewa T. Szyler.
Μετά την παρουσίαση, ο Ηλίας Βράζας (τραγούδι, κιθάρα) και ο Ισίδωρος Παπαδάκης (βιολοντσέλο, μπουζούκι) έπαιξαν τραγούδια σύγχρονων Ελλήνων συνθετών (Θεοδωράκης. Μαρκόπουλος…).
Η βραδιά «Ελληνικοί πειρασμοί» περιελάμβανε και τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης σχεδίων του Μιχάλη Χρυσουλίδη, ζωγράφου και σκηνογράφου, το έργο του οποίου «Θάνατος» κοσμεί το βιβλίο του Ηλία Βράζα.

Tear Down the Last Wall!

Two decades have elapsed since November 9, 1989, when the border separating Western from Eastern Germany was effectively opened.

Prime Minister George Papandreou attended the events, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, held yesterday in Berlin. The premier called for the last wall still dividing a European city, Nicosia, to be brought down and stressed that “as Greeks and Europeans, we can shout: Tear down the last wall, the one that divides Cyprus into two.” In Berlin, Papandreou held also a meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during which they discussed issues of mutual interest. Kathimerini daily: PM sets sights on Cyprus wall

“Breaking Down Walls, Building Bridges”

In Greece, the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall was commemorated in a special event, titled “Breaking down walls, building bridges” on November 8 at the City of AthensTechnopolis.

The President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias, Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas and the German Ambassador in Greece Wolfgang Schultheissaddressed the event, stressing the great importance of the fall of the Berlin wall, which has become the “symbol of freedom for all humanity.” The event organised under the auspices of the German Embassy in Athens. Droutsas also addressed the OSCE event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in Vienna on November 6.

Conference: The Image of Germany

Τhe Association of Greek Press Attachés and the German Embassy in Athens are holding, on November 12, a conference titled “The public image of Germany,” at the Amphitheatre of theTheocharakis Foundation.

The event is being held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany, the 20th anniversary since the fall of the Wall and 10th anniversary since the transfer of the country’s capital from Bonn to Berlin.

The piece of excrement who killed 13 at Ft. Hood was a muslim terrorist.  The people who flew airplanes into the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon were muslim terrorists.  Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, the takeover of the US embassy in Tehran, the hijacking of the Achille Lauro and killing of wheelchair bound Leon Klinghoffer, the bombing of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen, the bombing of the barracks and murder of 220 US Marines in Beirut, all acts committed by muslim terrorists.

Yet our political leadership, our politically correct media, and increasingly our senior military leadership refuse to admit this FACT.  These muslim cowards hate pigs.  The fact is that they are not good enough to be fed to our pigs.  A pig would crap them out like so much undigested slop.  These muslims terrorists are swine excrement.

US Army Chief of Staff General George Casey made the following statement after the Ft. Hood attack: “Our diversity, not only in our Army, but in our country, is a strength.  And as horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse.”

With all respect due to a high ranking officer in the United States Military, Sir, you are full of crap.  The real tragedy is that you and others like you continue to bury your heads in the sand and ignore the group that has been responsible for 99% of the terrorist acts in the world while you strip search 80 year old grandmothers at the airport to show that you aren’t profiling muslims.  This is insanity and stupidity.

General Casey’s views and statements expose what much of our senior military leadership have become.  General officers are nominated by a board of their peers and approved by the president and secretary of defense.  As our presidents have become more and more liberal and politically correct, they have appointed more liberal and politically correct SecDefs, and approved more liberal and politically correct general officers, who in turn nominate more of the same.

These six words expose the ignorance of the whole politically correct movement: “Our strength is in our diversity.”

Diversity did not produce America’s strength.  America’s strength is a result of our liberty, which produces excellence, which allows diversity to flourish as a byproduct.

Hellenic Centre and the London office of the GNTO supported and co-organised the second London Greek Film Festival. Among the people who followed the festival’s events were artists, film makers, producers, members of the Academia, reporters and so on.
The London Greek Film Festival is a unique opportunity for the Greek culture to reach the British public, while contributing in promoting Greek films as well as new film makers and actors.
On Sunday 1^st November the Odysseus awards ceremony took place at the Hellenic Centre. Key speakers at the ceremony were the Head of the Greek Press Office in London Mr Spyros Diamantis and the Head of the GNTO London Office Ms Sophia Panagiotaki.

The Script Award for short film at the 2^nd London Greek Film Festival 2009 was attributed to the script:  “Two Shoes on Wheels” of Stefanos Mondelos, based on the illustrated fairytale of Nikolaos Andrikopoulos (“Ellinika Grammata” editions).
This script was awarded for the second time recently, as it has received the 3^rd Award for Adapted Script for short film by the Hellenic Book Center.

Με στόχο την προβολή του ελληνικού κινηματογράφου, αλλά και γενικότερα την προβολή της χώρας μας στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία, πραγματοποιήθηκε φέτος στο Λονδίνο για δεύτερη συνεχή χρονιά από τις 30 Οκτωβρίου έως την 1^η Νοεμβρίου το Φεστιβάλ Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου, το οποίο συνδιοργανώθηκε από το Γ.Τ.Ε. Λονδίνου, το Hellenic Centre και τον ΕΟΤ.
Στα πλαίσια του Φεστιβάλ, το κοινό είχε την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσει 41 ταινίες μικρού μήκους – με αγγλικούς υπότιτλους – οι περισσότερες από τις οποίες παρουσιάστηκαν για πρώτη φορά στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία. Στις προβολές που πραγματοποιήθηκαν στις δύο ημέρες που διήρκεσε το Φεστιβάλ, συμπεριλαμβάνονταν ταινίες μυθοπλασίας, επιστημονικής φαντασίας, ντοκυμαντέρ, ταινίες κινουμένων σχεδίων (animation), ταινίες μικρού μήκους, και video art. Επίσης, παρουσιάστηκαν σενάρια για ταινίες επιστημονικής φαντασίας και για ταινίες μικρού μήκους.
Την πρώτη μέρα του Φεστιβάλ (Παρασκευή 30 Οκτωβρίου) παραγωγοί και σκηνοθέτες είχαν την ευκαιρία να λάβουν μέρος στο Informational Networking Event με τίτλο Shooting in Greece: Ένα εργαστήρι, στα πλαίσια του οποίου, οι συμμετέχοντες είχαν τη δυνατότητα να ενημερωθούν σε βάθος από τους αρμοδίους και να λάβουν κάθε είδους πληροφορίες όσον αφορά την κινηματογράφηση στην Ελλάδα, (επίσης πληροφορίες για ελληνικές εταιρείες παραγωγής, για σημεία ειδικού ενδιαφέροντος στην Ελλάδα, για χρηματοδοτήσεις κλπ). Το Φεστιβάλ περιλάμβανε επίσης συζητήσεις, παρουσιάσεις σεναρίων και διοργάνωση εργαστηρίων (workshops).
Την Κυριακή 1^η Νοεμβρίου, ημέρα λήξης του Φεστιβάλ, απονεμήθηκαν στο Hellenic Centre τα βραβεία Odysseus. Κεντρικοί ομιλητές στην τελετή απονομής των βραβείων ήταν ο Σπύρος Διαμαντής, επικεφαλής του Γ.Τ.Ε. Λονδίνου, η Σοφία Παναγιωτάκη, Διευθύντρια του Γραφείου ΕΟΤ και ο Διευθυντής του Φεστιβάλ, Χρήστος Προσύλης.
Το Βραβείο Σεναρίου μικρού μήκους ταινίας στο 2nd London Greek Film Festival 2009 έλαβε το σενάριο “Δυό Παπούτσια με Καρότσι“  του Στέφανου Μονδέλου, βασισμένο στο ομώνυμο εικονογραφημένο παραμύθι του Νικόλαου Ανδρικόπουλου (εκδ. Ελληνικά Γράμματα). Το συγκεκριμένο σενάριο βραβεύεται για δεύτερη φορά, μετά το 3ο Βραβείο Διασκευασμένου Σεναρίου για ταινία μικρού μήκους που έλαβε εφέτος, στον Διαγωνισμό Διασκευασμένου Σεναρίου που διοργανώνεται για πέμπτη συνεχή χρονιά από το Εθνικό Κέντρο Βιβλίου.
