Weeks of build-up for MMA fans around the world were rewarded last night as the long awaited return

Weeks of build-up for MMA fans around the world were rewarded last night as the long awaited return of Fedor Emelianenko to MMA competition was televised to an unprecedented TV audience worldwide. It didn’t hurt either that the Emperor spectacularly confirmed his status as one the sport’s biggest draw by disposing of his opponent early in the second round.

According to tvbythenumbers.com, CBS’ ratings averaged 3.79 million for the event, on par with previous MMA bouts that the broadcaster had aired, winning the 10pm-11pm TV time slot battle among US broadcasters. In addition to the 30-some countries where distribution rights had been negotiated, Sherdog reports that M-1 Global had secured a deal for the event to be aired on Russia’s Channel One, the country’s free state-run channel, boasting a 120 million home reach.

The evening began with the HW fight opposing BRA fighters Fabricio Werdum to Antonio Silva. Silva rocked Werdum early and bullied him on the ground before Werdum landed a big right hand around a minute later. The initial bout ended with Silva inviting Werdum back to his feet to continue a stand up match. Silva made Werdum fall to the ground with a left hand early in the second engagement, but then appeared to gas out, allowing Werdum to display great BJJ skills, effectively winning the second round. Silva’s speed decreased even more in the third as Werdum dictated the pace and ended the round pounding at his opponent on the ground. The UD went to Werdum. During the post-fight presser, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed that after having seen Werdum’s performance, a fight against Emelianenko seemed probable.

The LHW non-title bout between Sokoudjou and Strikeforce Champion Mousasi would turn out to be a kind of dress rehearsal for the main event, as the heavy favourite encountered surprising resistance from his rival before earning a convincing victory. Of note, Sokoudjou is one of the few of Mousasi’s opponents to have pushed the action passed the first round. He’s also one of the few that has taken Mousasi down, though proved incapable of keeping him there and taking advantage of that position. Mousasi’s ground skills were unmatched, reversing ground positions before finishing Sokoudjou by TKO (punches) late in the second round. Pleasant surprises consisted of Sokoudjou’s judo throws as well as his stand-up. On the down side, Mousasi’s finish seemed arduous, at least tougher than expected.

The MW championship bout opposing Jason Miller to Jake Shields proved that Shields’ decision to make it a ground match paid off, edging Miller to get the UD. A good back and forth fight that went the distance. It also highlighted the victor’s difficulty to finish opponents who share his talent on the ground. The champion might come to face the former belt-holder, Cung Le, in the New Year.

The main event featured Emelianenko, returning from a 10-month absence from MMA competition, facing brawler Brett Rogers for a non-title HW fight. Although Rogers gave a quick jab early in the first round that reopened a cut on Emelianenko’s nose, the Emperor didn’t appear too phased by the ensuing gushing wound. Rogers pressed him against the fence for a good minute before Emelianenko attempted a trip that resulted in them resuming a sparring match in the center of the cage. The Russian then landed a huge left hook that appeared to rattle Rogers, and he pressed for a takedown. Rogers ended up out-muscling Emelianenko and reversed his position before landing several shots to Emelianenko who hadn’t experienced that much opposition on the ground in a long time. Rogers’ short-lived attack was followed by Emelianenko resuming an offensive grappling game, but unable to submit his larger opponent. The first round ended with Emelianenko’s unconvincing ground and pound while in Rogers’ guard.

The second round saw a slower Rogers block a barrage of strikes, before he resorted to pressing Emelianenko against the fence, allowing himself to regain composure. When the fight resumed in the center of the cage, Rogers, both hands on the lower side of things, was caught by one of Emelianenko’s signature right overhand punches. He then pounced on the stunned Rogers who turned toward the ground before referee John MacCarthy stopped the bout (TKO punches) about mid-point in the second round. Although the Russian clearly out-skilled his opponent, he appeared uncomfortable with the size difference. This hadn’t been the case when he faced the mammoth Hong-Man Choi, though he is not to be considered a threat. On the other hand, Mark Hunt did give Emelianenko a good run back in late 2006, before getting subbed in the first round.

The question for Emelianenko and MMA fans is how long before a derby is organized that involves the HW championship.

CBS offered a good show, though for fans of the UFC, the amount of TV commercials shown really highlighted the difference between PPV and network television. As for the action and how it was captured, the broadcaster had great sound though more cameras might be required as viewers were sometimes blocked from the action by the referee.

November 8, 2009 by Ares-mma.com staff

Strikeforce and M-1 Global put on a successful event last night on CBS. Antonio Silva and Fabricio Werdum kicked off the televised coverage with their heavyweight fight. The judges scored the fight for Werdum after three hard-fought rounds. It has been rumored that the winner would face the winner of the main event of the evening – Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers. Gegard Mousasi then defeated Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou by technical knockout in the second round of their light heavyweight fight. Mousasi solidified his place as a top 10 light heavyweight fighter in the world with his performance. Jake Shields and Jason “Mayhem” Miller then squared off for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight title. Shields controlled the better part of the fight and took a unanimous decision. Mayhem fought well; he sunk a rear naked choke on Shields, which would have ended the fight, but Shields was saved by the bell. Then came the main event of the evening. The number 1 ranked heavyweight in the world, Fedor Emelianenko, entered the cage against Brett Rogers, a heavy underdog. Rogers’ performance was impressive. In the opening moments of the fight, Rogers landed a punch that opened a cut on Fedor’s nose. After a first round that had several momentum shifts, Fedor caught Rogers with a solid left hand in the second round that dropped Rogers, and Fedor followed that up with a barrage of strikes and forced the referee to stop the fight. Sherdog.com reports that Fedor broke his nose and injured his left hand during the fight.

The main event could not have gone any better for the fight promotions. Brett Rogers fought well in defeat. The next Strikeforce / M-1 Global event could be worthy of pay-per-view. Think about this as a possible fight card. The co-main events of the evening could be Fedor vs. Rogers II and Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum, for the Strikeforce heavyweight title. The main fight on the undercard could be Gegard Mousasi defending his Strikeforce light heavyweight title against the top free agent in the game, Dan Henderson. That fight card would be worthy of paying to see – as worthy as any event since UFC 100.

Brett “The Grim” Rogers will step into the cage with Fedor Emelianenko on Saturday. Rogers says he was dubbed “The Grim,” because Rogers would always say, “I’m gonna kill him” when asked how his next fight was going to go. Brett Rogers is physically imposing at 6′5″ and 280 lbs (cuts weight to make 265 lb heavyweight limit); he was raised in Chicago, Illinois and currently trains with Ambition MMA in Eagan, Minnesota. He is 10-0 with 9 wins coming by way of knockout and the 10th coming by way of submission due to strikes, and Rogers is currently the #8 ranked heavyweight in the world by Ares MMA. Rogers’ last win was his most significant; he stopped Andrei Arlovski, former UFC heavyweight champion, by knockout in the 1st round. Coming off that win, Rogers has been afforded the opportunity to fight the #1 heavyweight fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko. The odds makers have made him a 4 to 1 underdog in this fight, but if you ask him how this fight will go, Rogers will say, “I’m gonna kill him.”

If you were the president of a business, how would you negotiate with a man who had neither a concern for money nor a desire for personal glory? That was the situation UFC President Dana White was faced with last July when he attempted to negotiate a deal with Fedor Emelianenko. During a July 31 telephone press conference, Dana White said, “[W]e tried everything that we could possibly do to get Fedor into the UFC. . . . We came to the table willing to give up just about anything except the co-promotion.” Fedor has an equity stake in the fight promotion M-1 Global, and the sticking point in negotiations seemed to be that the UFC was unwilling to co-promote events Fedor participated in with M-1 Global. Fedor’s loyalty to M-1 Global prevented him from signing with the UFC. The UFC offered Fedor riches and personal glory – two things Fedor did not covet.

Last night, Fight Camp 360: Fedor vs. Rogers premiered on Showtime. The half-hour episode gave a glimpse into the training and day-to-day lives of Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers. Fedor came across as a kind and meek family man; he said that he was happy living in a small Russian town. Fedor said his family was the most important thing in the world to him – other than God. Fedor was gentle with everyone he came into contact with, except for his training partners. During a training session, Fedor tortured his training partners with strikes and slamed them to the mat with authority. There has been a loud buzz this week regarding whether Fedor Emelianenko can go mainstream. The fact is – Fedor has no desire to be a mainstream celebrity. Fedor is a common man who has an uncommon ability to fight. After Fedor devours Brett Rogers this Saturday, he will return to Stary Oskol (a few hundred miles south of Moscow) without giving a second thought to his mainstream celebrity status in American society.

November 2, 2009 by James Gideon

There has been a loud buzz on the internet regarding whether network television can make Fedor Emelianenko a household name. Fedor does not have the build to appear on fitness magazines, and he might have all of the personality in the world, but American fans would not know it because Fedor does not speak English. There is a distinct difference between fighters who appeal to casual fight fans and those who only appeal to hardcore fight fans. American fight fans follow fighters they can relate to in some way. American fight fans related to Chuck Liddell as a guy who they would love to have a beer with. They relate to Randy Couture as a personal hero – a man who cannot be kept down.

Fedor is an enigma to American fight fans, and CBS does not seem to have done much to introduce Fedor to the American public. Tomorrow night, Fight Camp 360: Fedor vs. Rogers will debut on Showtime. Who watches Showtime? CBS must make a harder push to introduce Fedor to American fight fans as someone who they can relate to. Fedor Emelianenko, the man, must be introduced to American fight fans in order for him to go mainstream. Fedor, the Russian cyborg who decimates his opponents, will only appeal to hardcore fight fans.

November 1, 2009 by ares-mma.com staff

Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko will fight at a co-promoted Strikeforce / M-1 Global event this Saturday, November 7 on CBS. Fedor was the last Pride Heavyweight Champion and is widely considered the #1 heavyweight fighter in the world. The fighter being fed to Fedor that evening will be Brett Rogers, an undefeated heavyweight who would present interesting problems for almost any other heavyweight. Against Fedor though, Rogers has only a puncher’s chance. At only 6’0” and 230 lbs, Fedor is a relatively small heavyweight by today’s standards, but few doubt that he can compete with (or even dominate) the new wave of MMA heavyweights. Fedor has stopped his last 5 opponents in the first round, with his last 2 wins coming against former UFC heavyweight champions – Tim Sylvia (submission – rear naked choke) and Andrei Arlovski (KO). Fedor’s focus is uncanny; that focus and the systematic way with which he decimates his opponents has led fans say, “Fedor is a cyborg.” Fedor’s one-punch power is serious, albeit not absolutely devastating, but when Fedor’s punching power is coupled with his ability to put combinations together, he is the most dominating striker in the world. Fedor competes actively in Sambo (a branch of jiu-jitsu), and his Sambo skills have translated to MMA in a scary way; he has submitted 6 of his last 7 opponents.

The event promises to be entertaining and should be a ratings success. Last year, Elite XC promoted mixed martial arts events featuring Kimbo Slice that were a huge ratings success for CBS. Despite the masses of viewers for these events, Elite XC could not manage to stay afloat financially. On Saturday, CBS will take another shot at hosting a live mixed martial arts event. Because competition is good for the sport, let’s hope CBS did not squeeze Strikeforce and M-1 Global so tightly in negotiations that the promotions are left without room to breathe.

The vacant Strikeforce middleweight title will be on the line in a fight between Jake Shields and Jason “Mayhem” Miller. That fight should be exciting and will be the focus of an ares-mma.com editorial tomorrow.

UFC President Dana White has had no problem with blatantly thwarting the success of promotions who seek to challenge the UFC for supremacy in the world of mixed martial arts. On November 7, while the Strikeforce / M-1 Global event airs on CBS, the UFC will air “UFC Main Events” on Spike TV, which will consist of the main events from UFC 101, UFC 102, and UFC 103. In the past, the UFC has run programming on Spike TV counter to competing promotions’ pay-per-view events. November 7 will be different, because the Strikeforce / M-1 Global event, featuring Fedor Emelianenko, will air on network television.

Many MMA fans will be holding tightly onto their remote controls that evening switching between Spike TV and CBS, but when Fedor Emelianenko takes center stage, all eyes will focus on Fedor. Not only is an outstanding performance from Fedor that evening necessary for the success of future Strikeforce / M-1 Global events, but an outstanding performance from Brett Rogers, the fighter being fed to Fedor that evening, is also a necessity. If Brett Rogers has a poor performance on November 7 and is easily stopped by Fedor, then the impression left with the fans will be that Strikeforce / M-1 Global may have the best fighter in the world under contract, but they have only B-level opponents to put in the ring with him.

its funny when i hear casual MMA fans talk about how amazing they think Brock Lesnar is and how they

its funny when i hear casual MMA fans talk about how amazing they think Brock Lesnar is and how they think Fedor doesn’t stand a chance. You can tell that they are just plain ignorant and have never seen Fedor fight. Fedor has fought top fighters in their prime and has beaten them decisively.

I was first introduced to Fedor when he first appeared in the Pride Fighting Championships against 6′11″ and 256lbs. striker Semmy Shilt. Fedor is only 6′ and 233lbs. so you can imagine the huge disadvantage that Fedor had over Semmy. I have never heard of Fedor that time and i have seen Semmy fight before. I thought to myself, “Shit, this Fedor dude is dead meat” and to my surprise he completely dominated Semmy and beat him to a bloody mess. I was SO IMPRESSED with how Fedor fought. Fedor then went against Heath Herring, who was at his prime back then and was considered the gatekeeper to any fighter who wants a shot at the title. Fedor demolished him! Then Fedor had a match-up with then Pride Champion Minotauro Nogueira. That time, Nogueira had amased a 13 fight win streak and was the most dominant fighter in MMA. Fedor got into the ring and PULVERIZED AND DESTROYED Nogueira. No one has ever seen Nogueira FUBAR’d (Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition) before. Nogueira took such a beating that the ring announcer and commentators were crying and wanted the fight stopped already.

Fedor went on to be the undisputed PRIDE Champion. In his 30 fights, he has never lost! Ok fine, he lost once, because referee stoppage due to a cut on his eye by Kohsaka in the first minute of the first round. Fedor wasn’t even hurt, it was a grazing punch the cut him and the ref decided to stop it. Fedor eventually fought him again and like everyone else that went against Fedor, He got his ASS KICKED BIG TIME! His Face looked like it got ran over by a truck! Fedor also fought KO artists such as K1’s Mark Hunt and Crocop and still came out on top.

His last fight before moving to the States is against GOLIATH, Hong Man Choi, standing at 7′2″ and tipping the scales at 350lbs. Choi was on top of Fedor several times during the fight yet Fedor was able to submit him as he has done numerous times. Then, in his first 2 fights in the states, he takes on former UFC champs Tim Sylvia and Arlovski and finishes them off within the first couple of minutes.

Lets now take a look at the Meat Head called, Brock Lesnar. Brock never went thru the usual MMA ladder, he was given the title shot because he sells tickets, even if he is really unproven. Yes, He dominated Heath Herring. But against Randy Couture, it was a different story, Randy is much smaller than him and yet Randy was ahead in striking up until Brock gets a lucky shot and takes out Couture. Otherwise, Randy would’ve won that fight easily. During the fight, i noticed that Brock seems to have a weak chin and can be knocked out.

When Brock faced Frank Mir, I already knew Brock was gonna win, because i never considered Mir to be a good fighter, Mir is too cocky, complacent, and underestimates his opponents. Mir always shows that he is ok by smirking at his opponents when he is hurt. He is too concerned with how he looks rather than how he fights. Going into the Brock Lesnar fight, he should’ve kept it standing with strikes against Brock cuz Frank Mir has solid kicks and also quick hands. He could’ve taken Brock but he decided to go to the ground and stay on his back.

A STUPID STRATEGY! Lesnar is huge and has a solid wrestling background, when he gets on top of you, you will have a very difficult time trying to get out. Sure enough, that is what happened to Mir, he got stuck on the ground and got pummeled.

Brock doesn’t deserve the title, and doesn’t deserve to be called a champion. Dana White only gave him the opportunity because he can sell tickets.

On UFC 106, Brock is set to face Shane CarWIN.

This should be a good match up since they are about the same size. They both come from a wrestling background. The main difference is that Shane has a more lethal KO power than Brock. I predict a Shane CarWIN WIN! There are only 2 ways that Brock can win this fight: (1) He takes shane to the ground and Ground and Pound him. I dont think Shane will be able to get off his back if he is taken down; (2) Brock gets a lucky punch and knocks Shane out. Otherwise, Shane will win via KO. If Brock wins, then maybe he deserves to fight Fedor.

In a fight, anything can happen, Fedor will most likely win but Brock has a chance, like every other fighter does, but my money is on Fedor. And for people that say Brock will destroy Fedor, they have no idea. Fedor has faced BIGGER and more skilled fighters than Brock and he demolished them. With the many weapons in his arcenal, Fedor will either KO brock, Submit him, or Ground and Pound Him. Brock’s only hope is that he gets lucky and KO’s Fedor or try to ground and pound him. Otherwise, Brock is DEAD MEAT!

Fedor 30-1

Brock 4-1

Let the numbers speak for themselves!

Dean Lister grew up in a military family and lived in such places as Venezuela and Panamá, as well as several areas in the United States before his family settled in San Diego for Dean’s high school years. The Boogeyman was a high school division wrestling champion and shortly after high school, he became interested in brazilian jiu-jitsu. Lister was already U.S. National Sambo Champion at this time. He took an introductory class with some wrestling team mates at Fabio Santos Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in San Diego. Dean was already familiar with the concept of groundwork but he found a new challenge in Jiu Jitsu, a unique sport that includes self-defense moves and strikes.
It is the depth of this sport that keeps Dean’s dedication and commitment to his training at an optimum level. He believes that practicing this sport reveals the true character of each participant by showing courage, patience, honesty, discipline, innovation, and integrity. Lister also loves the challenge involved in practicing a sport that is constantly evolving. He is known for unstoppable foot-locks and is always working to modify and refine existing moves and create new moves that will benefit him in competition and that will enhance the effectiveness of brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Dean Lister has competed in brazilian jiu-jitsu since 1996, starting just six months after he began training. He quickly made a name for himself in the sport and since them has earned a respectable reputation as a fierce competitor.
In the mixed martial arts event King of the Cage, The Boogeyman was ranked as the number one middleweight and defended his Middleweight World Champion title several times. This year he can be seen coaching in this season of “The Ultimate Fighter”.
Just like now, Dean was an Abu Dhabi invitee in 2000. A huge honor considering that the host of this contest, the prince of Abu Dhabi, selects only the top 16 fighters of each weight class from Olympic wrestlers, world-level sambo fighters, and world-level brazilian jiu-jitsu fighters to compete. Lister returned to the Abu-Dhabi tournament in 2003 where he defeated four of the best grappler’s in the world consecutively (3 by submission) to set a tournament record and become the Absolute Champion. Two years later, The Bogeyman became the 2005 Abu Dhabi Superfight Champion. He was quoted as saying that Fedor Emelianenko would be a great challenge and that he would jump at the opportunity to face him.

Dean Lister plans on being involved in brazilian jiu-jitsu as long as possible, as both a competitor and as an instructor. He hopes that this involvement will oblige him to travel the world.

Fedor Emelianenko, a 6′0″, 231 pound Russian heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter, who excels in Sambo and Judo, holds a 30-1 record and is the current WAMMA Heavyweight champion. Gegard Mousasi, a former Dream Middleweight champion, has a current record of 25-2-1 and won his last match in Dream 9 against Mark Hunt this past May. The 6′1″, 185 pound Dutch-Armenian fighter will be taking on Renato Sobral to determine STRIKEFORCE’s Light Heavyweight champion and has a fight style that is a unique blend of Dutch kickboxing and judo.

Sobral, hailing from Brazil, is known for his aggressive style, grappling prowess, and high-caliber submissions. He is the current STRIKEFORCE Light Heavyweight champion and has a record of 35-8 with his last victory coming against Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at Affliction: Day of Reckoning fight earlier this year.

“I am very excited to have Fedor, the number one heavyweight in the world, as one of the top fighters in EA SPORTS MMA,” said Executive Producer Dale Jackson. “He is one of the elite fighters in the sport today and will provide the ultimate competition for our gamers.

After Saturday’s dismantling of Frank Mir at UFC 100, Brock Lesnar seems pretty comfortable at the top of the UFC heavyweight division. Though his career in the UFC has been short, he has beaten two champions, Randy Couture and Mir, in a convincing manner. His size and strength will be a tough obstacle to overcome, but not impossible. Who can do it?

Fedor Emelianenko: If there is anyone who can take out Lesnar, it’s the Russian fighter Emelianenko (pictured). He is at the top of the Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings for good reason. With a 30-1 record, he has beaten fighters of every size, including the 7′2″ Hong Man Choi and 6′8″ former UFC champion Tim Sylvia. In January, he knocked out another former UFC champion, Andrei Arlovski, in the first round. In fact, he hasn’t had a fight get past the first round since a win over Mark Coleman in 2006, which lasted until the second round.

Emelianenko’s biggest obstacle in beating Lesnar isn’t in the cage, it’s actually getting him in the cage. He is signed with rival promotion Affliction for a fight with Josh Barnett in August. Fans have wanted Fedor in the UFC for years, but contract negotiations have gone nowhere between the groups. After the fights on Saturday, Dana White said that Emelianenko will be in the UFC.

“This Fedor thing has gone on and on and on,” White said in the post-UFC 100 press conference. “Eventually, Fedor’s going to be here. I want Fedor. I want him to come to the UFC and everything else.

“This guy (Brock Lesnar) just won the heavyweight title, and we’ll end up getting that deal done. And then we’ll do Brock vs. Fedor, and it’ll be a huge fight.”

Assuming that the deal gets made, Emelianenko has the best shot of beating Brock Lesnar.

Shane Carwin: How can you mitigate Lesnar’s size advantage? By putting him up against someone that’s equally as large. That’s Carwin — all 6′3″, 262 lbs. of him. His hands are so big that the 4X gloves he wears to fight need to be cut and taped to fit his hands. He can take punishment and still win, as he had a broken nose when he knocked out Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96. Carwin is also motivated to beat Lesnar, who Carwin thought was incredibly disrespectful after his win on Saturday.

The fans are why we do this, Brock, this sport is not about fat paychecks and drama. It is about hard work and sacrifice for a shot to do what you did last night. It doesn’t matter how much money you make if you can’t earn your peers’ respect and the respect and love of the greatest sporting fans in the world. Every autograph I give, every hand I shake I am thankful that you give me the opportunity to be a part of your world. This is the greatest sport int he world and most of the athletes in it deserve the love and respect they get and some just dont get it. From leaving the venue all the way to the Airport I have had fans of the sport ask me to take out Brock Lesnar for them.

The biggest knock against Carwin is that he is untested, but he is 11-0. He has much more experience than Lesnar. Carwin is slated to face Cain Velasquez, another exciting up-and-coming heavyweight, at UFC 104 in October. If he makes it through that fight, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a matchup between Lesnar and Carwin.

Alistair Overeem: If someone of a similar size won’t vex Brock, speed will. A fighter who is a champion kickboxer, can cut angles and move quickly? That might the perfect foil to Brock’s wrestling and power. That fighter exists in Dutch kickboxer Alistair Overeem.

Overeem faces two problems in overcoming Lesnar. One, he is the Strikeforce heavyweight champion, is fighting for them on August 15, and contractually obligated to Strikeforce. Two, he needs to stay on his feet to be able to use high kicks, but as Lesnar showed on Saturday, his takedown is quite effective.

Bobby Lashley: Like Lesnar, Lashley is a fellow WWE veteran and collegiate wrestler. Unlike Lesnar, Lashley is taking the long and winding road to the UFC. He also has four wins, but his competition hasn’t been nearly as difficult as Lesnar’s. Lashley’s biggest advantage is that he and Lesnar are the same size, and both have a strong wrestling background. With those two factors equal, the fight has the potential of being an all-out slugfest.

The problem with this fight is that Lashley doesn’t want to fight in the UFC until he is ready to be a champion.

“When I go over there I want to be a top, top level guy,” Lashley said. “I want talks of me fighting the champ when I get over there. I want them to say this guy’s really good.”

Lashley still has a while to go and much to learn before he can walk in and get a title shot. He will need to get a few more fights under his belt before we can see if he is truly ready for the champ.
