There’s been a number of activities in recent days to fill you in on. Some very positive, some a little sad.

* A short time ago, I wrote about the departure of an Emerald Dev here, and assured all readers that Emerald would continue to provide you the user with the best possible viewer we could make.

Overnight, another dev has decided to leave the team. This was because of his dissatisfaction with the consensus of the majority of the team, and his inability to accept that consensus. Unfortunately, he did this in a way to deliberately try to bring the Team’s reputation into disrepute, by posting private conversations and drawing incorrect conclusions.
You can be assured that Emerald will maintain it’s high standard of integrity, honesty and ethics that have contributed to it’s development thus far. Alas, part of being a success is having detractors, however we wish him well on his next legitimate venture.

* The good news is, a new beta version will be available to download very soon. Please be assured the Emerald Team is alive and thriving, and will continue in this way.

* Emerald will be appearing on Treet.TV on 22nd August. Stay tuned for more info!

* The Emerald Team is excited at the prospect of a new high profile developer joining us. More details to come!

Today, an odd message appeared on the emerald log in screen, thus:-

MOTD: We are now going to force a release that doesn’t work upon everyone. Enjoy being naked.

This is inaccurate and disruptive, and simply reflects the mood of a former dev on the team. This dev has now left, and the message removed.

As with any team, the Emerald dev team consists of a wide range of very diverse people. All are dedicated to seeing the best viewer possible presented to you, the user. Once in a while, team members leave for a range of reasons. It is rare for a tantrum to accompany their departure, however there is as you can see, a first time for everything.

A pleasant consequence of this is the return of a key member of the team, so you may look forward to a vibrant, productive and creative team once again.

A new Release Candidate will be available very soon, likely tomorrow SL Monday. Please be assured the Emerald Team is alive and thriving, and will continue in this way.

More information about the Emerald viewer can be found at The Emerald Blog

Some of my favorite new releases in the last few days have come from COCO Designs. I just love these dresses. They are flirty, and perfect for summer. You can also wear the top portion as a blouse with a pair of pants or how ever you like.

I’ve paired the dresses with a new footwear release from Baiastice called Camilla. These are very fun and have cute embelishments on the heel and come in a wonderful array of colors so go check them out, they are super cute.

The hair in my post is a new release from Analog Dog called 17. The skin that I am wearing is Lelutka‘s Lola skin. I love the tattoo layers for the lips (which is genius) which now I can finally use as Emerald has made a Beta version which supports tattoo layers. So if that stopped you before, go try Lola now!

Emerald is, as of today, formally accepted into the Linden Lab Third Party Viewer directory. According to Linden Lab:-

“The Third-Party Viewer Directory
To be listed in the Viewer Directory, a software developer must self-certify that it complies with Linden Lab policies. Beware of third-party viewers that are not in the Viewer Directory – they have either declined to self-certify or been refused for noncompliance with our policies”

So, use the Emerald Viewer with absolute confidence.

This is reposted from THIS livejournal posting in the Second Lifers group by vixynne.

Post starts here:

Emerald TOS Update–Xposted to “Alternative Viewers Status”
Okay, so. I’ve been following some of the SL blog posts regarding whether or not Emerald Viewer will be considered a violation of the new TOS as of April 30. I’m not a fan of the 2.0 Viewer, and I would hate to give up Emerald, but there’s no way I’d want to face perma-ban simply for logging in on it once the new TOS kicks in.

After reading post after post, some seeming to say “it’s not a big deal” and others proclaiming that the sky is about to fall, I decided to go to the horse’s mouth–so to speak. Since I’m a premium member, I realized LiveChat is an option (in a flash of uncharacteristic non-blondeness). The following is a transcript of my conversation with the LiveChat representative. I’m hoping it helps to clear up some of the Chicken Little-ish panic.
Please feel free to share and cross post wherever you feel it would be helpful to do so!

[11:54 AM] Mel: Ok Vixynne what is your exact question regarding Terms Of Service?
[11:55 AM] Vixynne: I would like to know if the new Terms of Service will disallow Residents from accessing Second Life via the Emerald Viewer.
[11:56 AM] Mel: No it will not stop using Emerald Viewer, however Second Life do not support any technical issue while using Emerald Viewer.
[11:57 AM] Vixynne: So I won’t be banned for using Emerald Viewer–there are several vicious rumors to that effect going around.
[11:58 AM] Mel: You will not be banned for using Emerald Viewer we just will not support any issues while you use Emerald Viewer.
[11:59 AM] Vixynne: Thank you so much for your help, Mel, I appreciate it! That’s all I wanted to know.
[11:59 AM] Mel: So there is nothing else I can help you with?
[12:00 PM] Vixynne: No, thank you, you’ve answered my question thoroughly.
[12:00 PM] Mel: Enjoy the rest of your day.
[12:00 PM] Vixynne: Thanks, you too.

*************************************
There you have it; in just about 5 minutes, I got my answer. *relieved sigh

Think of this as being environmentally conscious in regards too the Second Life Grid. One of the big

Think of this as being environmentally conscious in regards too the Second Life Grid.

One of the biggest problems I’ve learned with the lag issue are users wearing objects that are loaded with heavy scripts that aren’t really needed anymore; notably resizing scripts. Prim hair, prim skirts, shoes, body part attachments (like boobs and penises), and so on use scripts that are using initially, and then never used again.

The issue is being tracked on JIRA, SVC-3895 so please VOTE!

Sure, these scripts help users who aren’t really keen on how to build and edit things, and it’s a necessary evil for items you get that are ‘no modify.’ But once you have your item all properly re-sized and set up, you don’t use the re-sizer script anymore, but it’s still sitting there (often the script exists in EVERY PRIM in the object you’re wearing, which compounds the problem) and it’s still running taking up resources from the region you’re hanging out in.

I also find these re-sizing scripts annoying since if you happen to accidentally click that object you’re wearing (especially hair, prim skirts, or your boobs) you have to deal with the stupid menu that appears, and then see a useless time out message about 30 seconds later telling you that your time us up.

So please, be consciously aware of simulator lag issues, and to help save the grid, GO NAKED! Don’t wear items that have these scripts that bog the sim down. If at all possible, try to REMOVE the offending scripts once you have it altered to how you need it, since you really don’t need the script anymore once you have it properly set up for your avatar. Even if the object is (no modify) it still may be possible to remove the scripts. So as long as your object is copyable (or you still have the original box you unpacked with the original copy still in it) you should try to lighten the load you cause on the simulator by removing excess scripts you’re not using.

Also STOP WEARING SPAMY OBJECTS. I swear to gawd this is my biggest pet peeve. Why is it that 90% of all the items people wear, have to {llSay(@#!$@#$!$#)} some meaningless stupid inept bullshit no matter now mundane and pointless the action is? I really don’t need to know that someone is touching your boobs (or has touched anything), or has spanked your ass, or even the really mundane bullshit like how someone is sitting on the sofa.

It is extremely asinine to see this crap because so many content creators for some FUCKING reason believe this is needed; when most people on SL already know how to read and write, and they CAN roleplay/emote/cybersex/netsex on their own… you’d THINK. But all this crap really does is ADD TO THE LAG to the simulator you’re hanging out in. Then we have those ridiculous language translators which fall into the same category. It’s annoying and it just adds to the lag.

I also recommend using Emerald Viewer to help ligten your lag-footprint on the grid. Emerald has a lot of built-in functions that make many scripted objects people wear obsolete. Such as radar HUD attachments, Emerald’s Radar if fucking AWSOME! Also Emerald has recently added an Animation Overrider (AO) so you really no longer NEED to have an AO attachment anymore.

Less scripts running on your avatar, them smaller footprint you load on the simulator you’re in, the less LAG you incur on the simulator, and the grid at large.

One of the things I did recently was to take even my nude avatar lookset, and removed exesses prims and scripts I just don’t need if I’m not really using them, and still preserve my hot avatar’s appearance. I even took my new penis, removed all the scripts in it, and removed all the extra prims off leaving only the “soft” sculpted shape and the penis head, plus I don’t bother wearing the HUD for my penis if I’m don’t plan on using it, but just show off. So if I do plan on using my penis, I’ll just wear the full functional one if I’m going to dance on the poles, or if I get hired. Otherwise there’s no point in me wearing the full functional penis if I don’t plan on doing anything with it, other than to have it hang between my legs all day. Makes sense dosen’t it?
