Next week, Thursday Nov. 26th, there will be an Eclipse DemoCamp in Frankfurt, starting 05:30 PM until 09:00 PM at Saalbau Gallus. I am happy that my current project schedule allows me being in Frankfurt at this time. There are already over 40 registered attendees, this is quite impressing. • Using Eclipse TMF in a large scale modeling and implementation project from Dr. Nikolai Busse (Deutsche Börse Systems AG). The project Nikolai is talking about is the one I am working on most of this year. I already had the opportunity to talk about this project at the CodeGeneration 2009 and W-JAX 09 conference. Nikolai will no doubt give an really interesting talk about an extraordinary project.
• redView – dynamische Views für Business Applications from Ekkehard Gentz. Ekke has created a fascinating project using technologies like EMF, CDO, openArchitectureWare, UML2. Ekke is also a member on the openArchitectureWare team and it is always a pleasure to talk with him. Last time we met was last week at the W-JAX, but unfortunately I had to leave on thursday before his talk. Now I have the chance to see it finally.
• JPA (EclipseLink) in OSGI Anwendungen from Karsten Voigt (IBM Global Business Services). EclipseLink will be the reference implementation of the JPA 2.0 standard. This framework has already a long history and many experience was put into it. Although Hibernate is most widely spreaded I think that EclipseLink will play a bigger role in the future. EclipseLink has smooth integration with EMF with Teneo, which makes Domain Driven Design with JPA persistence really easy.
• Eclipse Code Recommenders – How much can the IDE predict what you will write in the next seconds? from Marcel Bruch (TU Darmstadt). Marcel presents his research project where a more intelligent way for producing IDE proposals is developed. Sounds interesting.
• Das ist hier Usus… from Leif Frenzel and Stefan Schürle (adrena objects). They will present projectusus, which aims to provide Eclipse plugins that derive settings for Eclipse and code quality plugins like Checkstyle and EclEmma. The clue is that the settings try to match automatically what’s a project’s usus.
• RCP goes Web 2.0 – Eclipse Rich Ajax Platform from Benjamin Muskalla (EclipseSource). Let’s see what RAP has new…

6 talks are really a lot for a DemoCamp. Besides presentations also networking is important at a DemoCamp. Let’s hope there is enough space for talking. Ralph Müller from the Eclipse Foundation will be there (where on the world is he not?), some people from SAP, Heidelberger Services AG, some of my colleagues from itemis, and several others. Gum Disease Raises Arthritis Risk (WebMD)

“We’ve known for a while that there is an association between gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis. But our new work suggests periodontal disease is causal,” says study head Jerry A. Molitor, MD, PhD, associate professor in the division of rheumatology and autoimmune disease at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.

Compared to people with mild or no periodontitis surrounding two or three teeth, people with moderate to severe gum disease are nearly three times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the study shows. Exposure to Alkaline Substances Can Result in Damaged Teeth (ScienceDaily)

It has long been known that acids can erode tooth enamel but a new Swedish study from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg shows that strong alkaline substances can damage teeth too – substances with high pH values can destroy parts of the organic content of the tooth, leaving the enamel more vulnerable.

Junk Food Turns Rats into Addicts (Science News)

Junk food elicits addictive behavior in rats similar to the behaviors of rats addicted to heroin, a new study finds. Pleasure centers in the brains of rats addicted to high-fat, high-calorie diets became less responsive as the binging wore on, making the rats consume more and more food. The results, presented October 20 at the Society for Neuroscience’s annual meeting, may help explain the changes in the brain that lead people to overeat…More…

USF Study Says Atkins-Type Diets May Reduce Stress (Tampa Tribune)

Researcher David Diamond wanted to see how much weight rats would gain on a typical American high-fat, high-sugar diet compared to rats on a low-carb, Atkins-type diet.

But several weeks into the study, it took a turn.

Diamond, a psychology professor at the University of South Florida, found that the rats eating a lot of fat and sugar were not only gaining weight, they were becoming anxious. His fat, stressed-out rats were turning the idea of comfort food on its head.

Diamond, also an associate professor of molecular pharmacology and physiology, presented his research this month at the annual Society for Neuroscience conference in Chicago.

It’s a continuation of his work for the Veterans Administration showing stress and a high-fat diet can damage brain cells.

Vegetables Can Protect Unborn Child Against Diabetes (PhysOrg)

Expecting mothers who eat vegetables every day seem to have children who are less likely to develop type 1 diabetes, is revealed in a new study from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

“This is the first study to show a link between vegetable intake during pregnancy and the risk of the child subsequently developing type 1 diabetes, but more studies of various kinds will be needed before we can say anything definitive,” says researcher and clinical nutritionist Hilde Brekke from the Sahlgrenska Academy…More…

Cell Phone May Reduce Bone Density (US News & World Report)

Wearing a cell phone on your hip may reduce bone density in an area of the pelvis commonly used for bone grafts, a new study suggests.

Turkish researchers used dual X-ray absorptiometry to measure bone density at the upper rims of the pelvis (iliac wings) in 150 men who carried their cell phones on their belts. The men carried their phones for an average of 15 hours a day, and had used cell phones for an average of six years.

Bone density was slightly reduced on the side of the pelvis where the men carried their cell phones, the study found. The difference wasn’t statistically significant and didn’t approach bone level density reductions seen in people with osteoporosis. However, the men were relatively young (average age 32), and further bone weakening may occur, said Dr. Tolga Atay and colleagues at Suleyman Demirel University in Isparta.

The study, published in the September issue of the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, suggests that electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phones may have a harmful effect on bone density…More…

Exercise Helps Brains Bounce Back (Science News)

A toned, buff bod isn’t the only thing a workout is good for. Exercise protects special brain cells in monkeys’ brains and improves motor function, a new study finds. The data, presented at a news briefing October 18 in Chicago at the Society for Neuroscience’s annual meeting, adds to a growing body of evidence that shows exercise is good for the brain, too.

“This is sort of a quiet revolution that’s been occurring in neuroscience,” says Carl Cotman, a brain aging expert at the University of California, Irvine, “to realize that physical activity at a certain level impacts the brain in a really profound way”…More…

In the spirit of Halloween and skepticism, I shall be posting some things related to both in the days to come.  The first is a hilarious spoof of various “ghost hunter” shows by those wacky guys at South Park.

Despite the crudeness & vulgarity of their criticism, the South Park guys aren’t that far off the mark in pointing out the logical fallacy (basically, arguing from ignorance – a LOT of ignorance) committed by these lame-o doofuses who stumble around in the dark, scaring themselves for the cameras.  For a more detailed critique of “ghost hunters” and their pseudoscience, see my earlier blog post on the subject.

In another media *facepalm* moment, the New York Post is reporting of a supposed “link” between cellphone use and cancer…

Study: Cell Phone Cancer Link

A groundbreaking, $30 million study into cell phones has found a link between long term use and brain tumors.

The World Health Organization is about to reveal that its decade-long investigation has found the devices can lead to cancer — and the internationally-respected body will soon issue a public health message with its findings, London’s Daily Telegraph reported today.

The conclusion goes against years of assurances by cell phone companies and scientists that cell phone use is safe.

But last month, Sen. Arlen Specter (D – Pa) organized Senate hearings to examine health implications of talking on-the-go.

CAN YOU KILL ME NOW? — A groundbreaking, 10-year study will show that long-term cell phone use can lead to brain tumors.

The WHO’s Interphone investigation’s results showed, “a significantly increased risk” of some brain tumors “related to use of mobile phones for a period of ten years or more,” the Telegraph reported today.

The study’s head, Dr. Elisabeth Cardis, said, “In the absence of definitive results and in the light of a number of studies which, though limited, suggest a possible effect of radiofrequency radiation, precautions are important.”

The project carried out studies in 13 countries, talking to tumor sufferers as well as healthy cell phone users, It interviewed 12,800 people.

The results will be officially published before the end of the year, according to the Telegraph.

This is a perfect example of how some in the media misuse science to make headlines, while at the same time spreading misinformation.  Notice that the article is citing research which hasn’t even been published yet! So, if the research isn’t yet published for scrutiny, how in blazes do the morons at NY Post know what the research says?  I always thought that a good journalist was supposed to check their facts before reporting a story, not the other way around.  Apparently, the folks at the NY Post live in an alternate universe.

In addition, some other tidbits that pop up in this article:

1. It references a “significantly increased risk” of cellphone use causing cancer – but what does “significantly increased risk” even mean?  Is it a higher risk by 50%, 10%, 1%, 0.1%, 0.0001%?  The fact that this info isn’t even reported just fuels wild speculations that – despite any actual evidence – whatever it is, it’s really bad.

2. I also want to make particular note of this paragraph in the article:

The study’s head, Dr. Elisabeth Cardis, said, “In the absence of definitive results and in the light of a number of studies which, though limited, suggest a possible effect of radiofrequency radiation, precautions are important.”

Note that the head of the study states that the results are not definitive, and the studies which are there (she refers to them as “limited”, which is science-speak for “we don’t have enough research to support a solid claim”) suggest only a possible effect.  And this is the research heading the study saying this, but she’s a scientist – the goofballs who wrote the NY Post headline are not scientists.

3. Lastly, there’s this part of the article:

The project carried out studies in 13 countries, talking to tumor sufferers as well as healthy cell phone users, It interviewed 12,800 people.

Ummm… I’ve got a bad feeling about this.  From what this states, it seems the study is based upon interviews with people.  Interviews?  As far as medical studies go, that’s pretty thin stuff, folks.  It’d be much more convincing if someone could actually provide some kind of clear-cut evidence of a physical mechanism by which cellphone radiation can cause cancer.  The problem is – for reasons I’ve outlined in an earlier blog post – no such mechanism exists that can be studied.

It’ll be interesting to see what comes out at the end of the year when the actual study is published, and I’m wondering how close to reality the NY Post’s depiction of the study will be.  I’m going to guess now: not much.

So, in the end, this is a classic case of sloppy journalism which, though it might grab some people’s attention with the scary sounding headline, ultimately serves to spread fear & ignorance of science.  Way to go, NY Post!  I give you a grade of FAIL.

In a little known study outside the scientific world:  HAARP One- Hop Experiment The South Pacific Buoy, deployed April 2004.

HAARP’s high-frequency radio waves can accelerate electrons in the atmosphere, increasing the energy of their collisions and creating a glow.

February 2008, HAARP induced a strange bulls eye pattern in the night sky. Instead of the expected fuzzy, doughnut-shaped blob, surprising irregular luminescent bands radiated out from the centre of the bulls eye, according to Todd Pedersen, a research physicist at the US Air Force Research Laboratory in Massachusetts, who leads the team that ran the experiment at HAARP. The team modelled how the energy sent skywards from the HAARP antenna array would trigger these odd shapes. They determined that the areas of the bullseye with strange light patterns were in regions of denser, partially ionized gas in the atmosphere, as measured by ground-based high-frequency radar used to track the ionosphere.

“The novelty is not seeing the aurora – it’s the fact that we can actually create enough high-energy electrons to form plasma,” said Mike Kosch, chair of Experimental Space Science at Lancaster University, UK. “It shows something completely different and new that we hadn’t expected. Ten significant seismic events, unusual weather patterns, and volcanic eruptions, nuclear power outages.  All in February of 2008,  all the while HAARP messes with the ionosphere.   Are we beginning to see a pattern here?

After the 1930 Idu Peninsula earthquake in Japan, for example, researchers collected over 1500 reports of unknown lights. And the Tangshan earthquake in China on 28th July 1976 was accompanied by a “colorful, flashing light display [that] was seen in the sky 200 miles away” In 1988 and 1999, the Saguenay region of Quebec had thirty eight instances of EQL activity,

1. Seismic lightning (no thunder);
2. Luminous bands in atmosphere;
3. Globular incandescent masses;
4. Fire tongues, small mobile flames near the ground, like Will-o’-the wisps; and

Just before the earthquake struck Sichuan province in China, there were odd visual disturbances and they were caught film and tape.  One puzzle is that the colors in the Chinese clouds were upside down from a normal circumzenithal halo – red pointing toward the horizon and blue to wards the Sun, instead of the other way round.

Det är väl inte särskilt djärvt att tänka sig att om det således finns människor som är känsliga för denna exponering, så torde det också finnas människor som är överkänsliga för den. Alla epidemiologer vet att det är den individuella känsligheten som til syvende og sidst avgör om man ska bli sjuk av en viss sorts exponering. Alla som röker får ju t.ex. inte lungcancer. Alla mediciner verkar inte på alla människor. Och vissa får oavsedda biverkningar.

Dessutom finns det förstås mängder av studier som visar på fysiologiska förändringar, både in vitro och in vivo vid exponering för elektromagnetiska fält. Provrör – och troligen inte heller möss – brukar knappast inbilla sig att de påverkas.
