It’s just Avatar or Sherlock Holmes, etc. coming out during the end of the year. So, I decided to do this one early.

2) Jennifer’s Body

I ignored everyone and saw this movie because no matter how much of a bad actress Megan Fox is, I still got a soft spot for her hotness. Other than that Amanda Seyfried and Diablo Cody, two good names. But I was so disappointed. I thought for days that how Diablo Cody wrote this just after she wrote Juno. Goddammit.

3) Hotel for Dogs.

Maybe a good family film, but just not my cup of tea.

4) Duplicity.

Meh! Other than the twist the movie sucked. Watched it because of Clive Owen but was disappoinred.

5) Dragonball Evolution

Why the FUCK did Emmy Rossum agree to do this? A complete waste of time. Full of bad CGI and action. If an action movie lacks in these 2 departments then what else is there to watch?

So here is my 5 worst movies of the year list.

This week’s “who’s that girl??”  is definately famous, but if i say her name you’d be hard pressed to name one movie she’s been in or sing one of her songs.

She’s an exceptional opera singer and her movie highlights include  The Day After Tomorrow, Poseidon, The Phantom of the Opera and Dragonball Evolution.

Gerard Butler’s choice to play the Phantom like Gerard Butler was going out on a Friday night for some stalkage may have been … unwise.

Christine Daae is the orphaned daughter of  a Swedish violinist.   Before he died, he promised her he would send an ‘angel of music’ to watch over her.   Christine is taken in by Madame Giry and her daughter at the famous Opera house in France, where no one actually has a French accent except for Madame Giry.    Christine loves to sing but has been too grief stricken to sing properly; until, that is, she hears a voice behind a mirror helping her.

Now begins the parade of idiocy that runs through this movie.  Most of the general populace, however brain damaged, stupid or downright idiotic would hear a voice behind a mirror and do two things:  1) run or 2) grab something sharp and pointy.   No, Christine believes her angel of music has finally arrived.

Madame Giry knows the truth, since she’s totally BFF with the infamous Phantom of the Opera, who’s really a sideshow freak that she let live in the sewer bottom of the Opera.    Sadly, it does not have a charming view but Gerard Butler’s Phantom seems well stocked on candles.   He seems to have nigh on two million; perhaps he is a candle collector?

The Phantom schemes to get Christine in and Carlotta, the diva who can’t really sing, out of the Opera’s shows.    The whole time he’s trying to seduce Christine, taking her on fun boat rides to his Sewer Palace and wooing her with his dark and mysterious pipe organ.   Uh … yeah.

The problem here is that while Gerard Butler may look hungover, in need of a shave and a shower and possibly not all there sometimes, he is not bad looking.   In fact, I’d wager that it’s hard to ugly up Gerard Butler (although The Ugly Truth did a good job of making him seem vile) and sticking a bit of molded plastic on his face doesn’t make him look like a monster who has to chat up a girl by kidnapping her to his Sewer Palace with his candle collection; it makes him look like a guy with a serious brain malfunction.   Oh yeah, and a creepy, perverted one at that.

Competing for Christine’s affections is Raoul, the Vicomte with a heart of gold and nothing upstairs.    If one were to crack open Raoul’s cranial cavity, it would probably contain bits of cardboard and dryer fluff, with  a few starving moths flying around.    He’s obnoxiously bent on Christine-directed chivalry.

Needless to say the Phantom doesn’t like this.   And he doesn’t like that the new Opera owners won’t pay him his extortion money.   … And he really doesn’t like that Carlotta lady.   Yeah, so some people die.

The main problem with Phantom is the cast.  Emmy Rossum is convincingly dim, but her eyes are so … dead.    Not to be mean, but everything I’ve seen her in she’s got the same look that salmon has at the fish counter.   And Gerard Butler can eke out the Phantom’s songs, he looks like he shops at L’Abercrombie & Fitch in his spare time.    He’s not menacing or scary or even remotely creepy; he’s just Gerard Butler, running around an opera and doing his best sexy-eyes at Christine.   The guy that plays Raoul is no better, and Minnie Driver as the divalicious Carlotta is just exhausting.

The real guilty pleasure in all this is the amount of detail lavished on the sets and costumes.   The Opera is stunning, the costumes magnificent and everything seems to be locked down to the minutiae.   Lloyd-Webber’s music is cool, if you view it through the lens of when it was popular on Broadway (the ’80’s) and very bombastic.

Overall, it’s not … good but it is a guilty pleasure, if only to laugh at the idiocy of the main characters and gaze upon some awesome sets and costumes.   … And to see Gerard Butler attempt to act as a conflicted, disfigured person with lots of emo rage.

I suggest you all run off and read Cleolinda’s Movies In Fifteen Minutes Recap of Phantom of the Opera, which is far more hilarious and much more in depth than I could write — you can find it HERE.

it’s weird how many people hate Emmy Rossum. I used to like her. then I hated her. then I liked her again. then I liked Scarlett Johansson and that made me sick so I started liking Emmy Rossum again.
I mean, she is nice. I like the colour of her hair although she’s a bit too thin and virginal kind of girl. and now let’s start with the hate. people say Rossum is trying hard to be the star, to be loved and to get all the attention. and she wants it hard. and she always tried to fit in but never actually did. she just hang around. I even remember a week or two ago I came across her interview where she said she watched Gossip Girl and she’s more like Jenny (the character) if anyone. because she was always on the outskirts and always tried to fit in, she was a ‘theater nerd’. that’s what she said. wtf with the ‘theater nerd’? whatever.
but you do find Emmy talking about herself, you do find people saying Emmy is bitch, you do find people saying Rossum tries too hard and was never (and never will be) the It girl.
maybe she’s the bitch. although you can never know for sure. maybe they just hate her. and you actually know why they would. she is a weirdo. her music is definitely not for everyone and you’d say many people would HATE that kind of music. I personally like some her songs if I don’t have to listen to them in a row. her voice is just too high pitch.
and her talking voice gets annoying.
but her interview (real, long, deep interview) for AskMen helps me understand the haters MUCH better. turn-on in a guy: wit. W-I-T?!! wtf???? W-I-T?!!! noooo, noo, this can’t be happening. is she for reals?
I can’t even put in words my answer for this question but that wouldn’t have ever made me say such a stupid thing. WIT??? god. GOD.
AND she’s overusing “I mean”

Dragonball: Evolution 2009

    Let me say something right up front before I review this film.  I never got into the popular anime series that this film is based on, I have seen a few episodes and the series just never grabbed me.  So, my review of this will be of a novice and not a fan of the series.  I will be judging the film on its own merit and not the connection to the anime.  That being said, I really enjoyed this, it was a light and fun action packed kung fu film with a great hammy performance by Chow Yun Fat.  The choreography in the film is very good, though it could have used more fight scenes and less comedy and set up. It really helped that they picked a great actor to play the head villain, James Marsters, anything he does he brings a higher level of style and class with it than most actors can ever muster.

    The plot basics are this, we meet Goku (Chatwin) who is being trained in martial arts by his grandfather.  He has issues at school though, cause his grandfather will not allow him to fight back.  This all changes when his grandfather is attacked by some people who are looking for something called the Dragonballs.  Before his grandfather dies Goku promises him to find the great Master Roshi (Fat) and to find and protect all 7 of the Dragonballs for the evil lord Piccolo (Marsters) who wants to use them to destroy the world.  He finds Roshi and teams up with other like minded fighters to put an end too the tyranny of Piccolo, but he does not know the full story and will he be able to man up enough in the end to beat him or is he doomed to failure.

    This is a fun and enjoyable film.  Wong’s direction is light and frothy , which is a perfect match for the subject material.  He never lets it get too bogged own in seriousness for its own good.  The script is pretty simplistic and that works in its favor.  You get enough characterization to feel for the characters but never too much that it slows the plot down.  Because first and foremost this is a plot driven film.  The cast is very good, with a great performance by Fat, he is very funny and as always charismatic.  Marsters as the main bad guy Piccolo is great too and he chews his scenes with relish.  Chatwin is a decent protagonist but he is overshadowed by these 2 actors.  The action sequence and the SFX are done very well.  The fight scenes are fast and furious but you never get the sense that the characters are ever in any real danger.  That is good for the kids that this film is aimed at, but it may leave more adult viewers wanting more.  This is a fun family friendly kung fu film, but if you are expecting anything more, you will be sorely disappointed.

I know it’s not fashionable today to like Emmy Rossum but I publicly state that I do. I was kinda annoyed at her during various periods of her career. Like, when she kissed Jake Gyllenhaal, went on to kiss Gerard Butler and Patrick Wilson, but all said and gone I feel kind of related to the girl. we are same height, both have wild curly-curly-ugly hair and are sort of odd.
so I kinda like her. she has natural dark brown hair which I love. she sings like an angel and she contributed to the Phantom of The Opera being such a great movie. I like her.

After a long time…I managed to find time to watch 2 movies – Dragonball Evolution and The Proposal. These were pending since long and the funniest thing in my opinion is that my perception of both the films changed to reflect opp of the original.

The Proposal

My perception was – “Oh! another Sandra Bullock movie where she plays the loser yet again” but then the comic storyline changed my opinion. I ended up liking this movie the most…infact it tops even over The Ugly Truth. Sandra Bullock stars as Margaret Tate, Executive Editor-in-chief for a publishing firm and Ryan Reynolds plays her submissive Exec assistant to Editor, Andrew Paxton. Margaret is hated by her subordinates for her cold and indifferent demeanor and its heightened when she fires an employee. When her bosses tell her that she is in danger of losing her position due to her immigration visa getting rejected…Margaret covers up by announcing her ‘engagement’ to Andrew.

After setting up a lot of conditions, Andrew agrees to marry Margaret and both of them visit Andrew’s parents and family in Sitka, Alaska to break the news. There Margaret gets a chance to explore the complex aspect of human emotions and the bonds of family. The visit also helps Margaret and Andrew grow closer. Chaos reigns however, when Andrew’s family insist that they do the wedding before the couple leave for New York. A guilt-ridden Margaret comes clean at the altar and walks away with the immigration officer who warns her of dire consequences if she doesn’t migrate to Canada in 24 hours.

Andrew who realizes his feelings for Margaret races literally against time and proposes to her again. They get engaged for real and appear before the immigration officer again. As the ending credits roll you see the interview happening.

I felt that Sandra Bullock came back with a fresh new look and looks more cheerful here than in other movies. Ryan Reynolds looks great as ever although I didn’t like his sinister role as Deadpool in Wolverine. As Andrew, its amusing to watch Ryan putting on the expression of being perpetually lost as Margaret seems to handle his dialogues. On the whole, it was one of the best romantic-comedy flicks I’ve seen in a long time after The Ugly Truth.

Dragonball Evolution

I haven’t watched Dragonball series per se so can’t really comment on the introduction of Nameks to Earth nor comment on if Piccolo was originally evil. The story portrayed is Goku attends high school and has a crush on Chi Chi, the most popular girl in town. On his 18th birthday he’s gifted the 4 star dragonball by his grandpa Gohan. Goku chooses to attend Chi Chi’s party rather than celebrate his birthday at home. He hurries home when he senses his grandpa’s chi weakening.

Turns out that Gohan is murdered by the evil Piccolo who escapes his imprisonment and is out to collect the dragonballs to bring about apocalypse on Earth. He is aided by Mai who kills the keepers of dragonballs and collects them for Piccolo. Goku meets Bulma Briefs, the scion of Capsule Corp who agrees to help him find the elusive Master Roshi on the condition that Goku finds her 5 star dragonball for him. They set off in the quest and chance upon Yamcha who joins them in their quest. The hunt brings them face to face with Piccolo and Mai. During the final fight, Piccolo reveals to Goku about Goku’s dark secret i.e. Goku is the fabled dark force Oozaru and the transformation occurs during the solar eclipse. Then we are shown Goku transforming into the Oozaru but is brought to his senses by Roshi who dies to save Goku. Goku fights Piccolo and leaves his gravely injured. Goku revives Roshi using the dragonball wish and it is shown that he officially starts dating Chi Chi.

While this isn’t the fact, the movie makes the whole thing somewhat interesting with the high school background. Bulma’s character it seems is grossly misinterpreted probably because I felt her intelligence was not properly portrayed. On the whole, it was a disappointing movie. The punch that kept the anime series alive and successful somehow seems to be lacking in the movie.

So it’s really beautiful and cathartic to have the ability to write your own songs and speak from your own heart about things that are important to you.”

On taking time off between projects: “I don’t work constantly. I think that can get you into a pattern going from set to set where you don’t have time for self reflection and to be a real person or enjoy life. And if you don’t enjoy your life and your friends, I don’t know how you can be an artist who’s at all effective or in touch with reality.”

On how she stays sane: “I play with my Yorkie and my Chihuahua. I also dance and try to take ballet every day.”

And that dress is quite amazing giving the allusion that it is see through but not. It is nicely tight allowing a nice view of her very sexy body. I think she looks great as she poses at GQ Magazines Gentlemans Ball.
