Just after New Year’s, the biggest digital media conference of them all, CES, descends on the Las Vegas Strip. 110,000 are expected, 2500 exhibitors, 250 conference sessions, 800 speakers.  The show floors run from Th 1/7- Su 1/10 but the action really gets started on Tu 1/5 with CES Unveiled and W 1/6 Press Day.  Press outreach has been tremendous with the winner of the most inventive lure thus far going to Shuttle (PC) who mailed mysterious hard copy invites to their press event via this cinematic ARG-styled website.  Needless to say it’s our first time covering CES, and we are very excited.  In prep for CES, Digital Living Room will be celebrating connected devices at Sun Microsystems, Santa Clara next week with related Tech Supper Clubs in LA, SF, SV. On the content side, HRTS is lunching with the showrunners of Modern Family, Glee, Mad Men, How I Met Your Mother and Rescue Me at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.  If you can’t make it live, try catching the stream. The Emmys are a time for honoring the achievements of silver screen stars and of course, for fashion. Millions of people worldwide tune in to see who’s wearing what and to catch a glimpse of the up and coming styles, trends and colors. It was apparent that no matter how toned down the glitz and glam for this red carpet event was, one accessory stole the show: earrings.

When you’re wearing your hair in an up do like so many Hollywood actresses do, you’ve got to have a fabulous pair of earrings to compliment your look. And if you’ve got a gorgeous mane of hair that is curled to perfection, you’ll want to wear earrings that won’t get lost in your waves. Here’s our top picks for Emmy award winning earring style.

Drew Barrymore – The starlet chose several carats of diamonds to adorn her ears as she strolled the carpet in a blush colored peach gown. The look was old Hollywood glam all the way. For vintage inspired styles, try clip earrings to pair with a romantic gown.

Heidi Klum – Ever the fashion icon, the model donned cascading earrings with carat after carat of diamonds. Heidi’s earrings were quite heavy, so might we suggest clip on earrings in a similar style instead? These will still pack a punch but will feel a lot lighter.

Leighton Meester – The Gossip Girl star went with a great pair of colored chandelier earrings. For a cost friendly and wearable alternative, choose rhinestone earrings instead. Available as both pierced and clip on earrings, any fashionista will be able to find something fabulous to wear.

Mila Kunis – The fashion savvy star chose vintage chandelier earrings to adorn a ballerina type gown. The look was a little sultry and provided just the right amount of retro glam. For a similar style, scour flea markets for clip on earrings with adjustable backs. Dark stones are all the rage right now, so these are accessories that you can easily work into your wardrobe without spending a fortune.

Mizrahi's Plaid Junior's Cheesecake

And we are especially disappointed that he and QVC are hawking plaid cheesecake from Junior’s for a “holiday surprise price” of $39.94.

Let’s see, with $11.22 handling and shipping, that makes this 8-inch cheesecake more than $50. Well, we guess that’s a bargain compared to the regular price for the cheesecake, which is $48.50. So with the regular price plus shipping and handling, Mizrahi’s QVC plaid cheesecake is roughly $60.

“It’s going to be the best cheesecake you’ve ever had,” host Lisa Robertson said.

Not for nothing, as we say in Jersey, but it better be the best at that price. We don’t care if it got three five-star ratings already online.

Tiime out for a reality check: Has anyone told QVC, or Mizrahi, that there is a recession and a 10 percent unemployment rate in this country? As part of that tenth of the nation we will not be buying $50 plaid cheesecakes for the holidays. But QVC sold more than 2,000 of them.

“My first food product,” Mizrahi said. “Plaid cake, plaid plate.”

The Brooklyn-bred designer was talking about the various plaid houseware items he has done for QVC. But there are also plaid shoes, plaid clothes, plaid blankets, plaid pajamas, plaid everything. We’re not so crazy about the plaid, to be honest.

QVC shot Mizrahi’s show at his studio in Manhattan, where the home shopping network has built a set to show off the designer’s line. There is a modern living room area with an off-white fireplace, white sofas and glass tables. There is also a nook that’s got a bed in it, all the better to show off Mizrahi’s plaid blanket.

There was a painting of Mizrahi’s dog Harry over the fireplace, and one of his dog Dean over the bed. Harry was featured in a silk scarf that incorporated sketches that Mizrahi drew of his mixed-breed mutt. The scarf was $47.

“This is going to be my Christmas present to everyone,” he said.

Mizrahi said he’s been working on his QVC collection for the past six months, and showed viewers his “Inspiration Board,” where he posts photos and fabric swatches as he works on his couture collections. He said he has one for QVC, as well as a personal one at his house.

Mizrahi and Robertson had a nice rapport, although when they took calls from viewers they kept speaking over them. Robertson said that because they were in New York, there was a time delay with the calls that was causing the problem.

The logo for QVC’s Isaac Mizrahi Live! line is “a daisy of exclamation points,” according to Mizrahi.

Sorry to bore people who have already read this, but we interviewed Mizrahi years ago for a story on the impact of AIDS on the fashion industry that won us a Gerald Loeb Award. He was nice, smart and articulate.

We loved — and miss — his apparel at Target. In fact, we wore a one of his black Target dresses to the Emmys last year. The price of the dress? A whopping $59.

By the way, Robertson was rocking some cleavage, especially when she bent over the plaid cheesecake. And of course, she said she was going to buy half of the Mizrahi items she presented.

This might be the most moving thing I’ve seen on the internet in a long time. I hope we are still treasuring and promoting genuine people like Fred Rogers today.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation, in association with Ernst & Young LLP, is offering three scholarships in honor of Fred Rogers, the creator and long-time host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. The scholarships are intended to support and encourage aspiring undergraduate or graduate students to pursue careers in children’s media and further the values and principles of Fred Rogers’ work. Lady, just because I’m an ignorant black man and you paid me a nickel to bust up your chiffarobe doesn’t give you the right to call me ridiculous just ’cause I’m proud of my son.”

I’m no linguist, logophile whathaveyou, but many times while watching comedies just a single word in a joke will create a reaction so strong it affects me for long after the moment has ended. Such is the case with “chiffarobe.” Those who watched this week’s Family Guy will remember it as one of many words used in the extended “you know a person is old when they use this to mean this” gag at the end of last night’s episode “Brian’s Got a Brand New Bag.”

While the Family Guy joke was probably the best in that particular episode, hearing “chiffarobe” evoked a memory from when this word was used as an even better comedic device in a scene from the second season episode of 30 Rock “Rosemary’s Baby,” a scene that I believe to be the best in the series’ still-in-process history. Not only is Alec Baldwin’s sizeable talent on full display playing five(!) characters within a character (which was undoubtedly the reason he nabbed a second straight Emmy win for Best Actor in a Comedy that year) but the fact that the 30 Rock writing team crafted both a Good Times and a To Kill a Mockingbird reference all in two and a half minutes is staggeringly amazing.

A Star-Studded Night For Celebrity Charity Work And An Evening Of Cool Jazz and R&B Live Musical Performances Highlights The First Annual Noble Awards

A long list of A-Celebs turned out for the red carpet affair and First Annual Noble Awards show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills. It was an event to honor celebs who have done noble work in charitable organizations. About a dozen charities handed out awards.  Morgan Freeman received a Lifetime Achievement. This year’s honorees, who attended to accept their award included Nancy O’Dell

Jennifer Howell, Founder of The Art of Elysium, presented a Noble award to Joel Madden with Lionel Richie, Allison Beck and Stacey Price: “As both an artist and a father, Joel truly embodies a sincere passion for both music and children.

The awards were sculptured by Antonio Banderas the children at the Shriners Hospitals for Children with the guidance of The Art of Elysium volunteer/actor/sculptor David Grieco.   Joel Madden said, “The artists at The Art of Elysium” should get an award, too. The Noble Awards creators Executive TV Producer and his wife, Celebrity TV Anchor Janeen Mansour were pleased with the star-studded turned out of celebrity humanitarians and both are optimistic that it will be televised much like the Oscars and Grammys annually.  Access Hollywood’s Billy Bushintroduced Janeen Mansour,founder of  The Noble Awards.

Brian McKnight has earned himself a spot in contemporary music history.

McKnight has released 11 albums to date, 7 of them have gone platinum, with several going 2 and 3x platinum, and has sold over 20 Million albums worldwide. He just released a new album last month and perform one of his songs live.

McKnight was introduced by Actor Dennis Haysbert.

Another of the highlights of the evening was eight-year old Emily Bear, who performed live at the Noble Awards show. She was introduced by Noble Awards Founder Janeen Mansour.

8-year old Emily Bear – Pianist Emily Bear has only been playing piano for three years, but at just eight years old, her accomplishments are inspiring and her talent is breathtaking. Classical, jazz and boogie come naturally to her. Emily’s songs were are all written and composed at age seven.

Julio Iglesias Jr. also provided some soul soothing live singing at the event. Julio Iglesias Jr. was born in Madrid, Spain to well-known singer, Julio Iglesias and Isabel Preysler.

The two-hour event seeks to annually honor up to a dozen charities and celebrities who actively support them, elevating awareness of these organizations and the impact of their work.

“Saturday Night Live’s” two most frequent guests will host the Oscars together.

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin are teaming-up for jokes: dry, silly and in-between for the next Oscars, March 7. This will be Baldwin’s first time as host of the Oscars and Martin’s third.

Both Baldwin and Martin know what it’s like to be in the audience of an awards show, waiting to hear if they’ve won. Baldwin has two Emmys for “30 Rock,” plus nominations for a Tony and for an Oscar. Martin has an Emmy for writing, along with several nominations. He’s won two Grammys for comedy and another for playing the banjo on an Earl Scruggs album.

It’s unusual to have more than one person hosting the Oscars show.

But, it’s been done before.

If you go way back to the first Oscars in 1929, Douglas Fairbanks and William DeMille hosted together.

At the time, they were the president and vice president of the motion picture academy.

The last time there was more than a single host was in 1987 when Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Paul Hogan worked the room together.

Ok, so How I Met Your Mother has only just started screening in the UK, and so it’s stars don’t have quite the profile that they do in the States. But looking at the stir the show has created across the pond, it is obvious that the cast have started to take their place among TV (and cinema’s) A list. Jason Segel is now a bonafide movie star, with Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and I Love You, Man both under his belt. For me, however, the biggest revelation is the rebirth of Doogie Howser’s Neil Patrick Harris as a comedic force to be reckoned with.

He has recently hosted the Tonys and the Emmys, and now there is rumour and speculation about him being given the biggest hosting job of the year – the Oscars. It could be debated whether NPH has the movie cred to take on such a job just yet, but watching his opening act at the Emmy’s this year (above), it is clear that he could pull it off. And since apparently Hugh Jackman has turned down the chance to take the role on again, who else could fill those singing and dancing shoes?

Maybe NPH and Jason Segel could do it together? Their rendition of The Confrontation from Les Mis is now pretty legen….dary. But again, even though Jase has made a few strides into the world of cinema, they are both still essentially TV stars. So who else could do it?

Paul Rudd would be pretty good. Alec Baldwin? Will Ferrell? Tina Fey?

Hot casting news from contributor, and fellow TV fanatic, Jackie Boy: Critic and awards-darling Damages is about to get a dose of comedy, kinda. Coming into its third season, the FX drama will welcome veteran comic actors Martin Short and Lily Tomlin as series regular and guest star, respectively. The plot will pit Emmy-winner Glenn Close’s Patty Hewes against a family led by Tomlin, her son (played by Campbell Scott) and their high-powered attorney (Short).

Short seems a left-field choice to join the tense legal thriller, but the show has previously used another actor known mostly for comedy, Ted Danson, to embody one of the best TV villains of recent years.

Production of the show’s 13-episode season three is set to begin tomorrow in New York City for a January premiere on FX.

I bought Japonesque’s heated eyelash curler after having heard it was offered in one of those celebrity award show gift baskets. I believe it was for the Emmys, but not this past year. What I would give to get my hands on one of those baskets!

This sounded like a really great invention, especially for someone like me with really straight lashes. If it’s something good enough for A-list celebrities, then surely it works well.

NOT!

The curler is a little plastic tool that comes with a battery in it. It has a tiny light to indicate that it is on. When I first tried it I’d just assumed that I didn’t pre-heat it long enough. Well that wasn’t the case. After nearly 20 minutes, it did feel quite hot to the touch, but, it somehow doesn’t do what it’s supposed to. I brushed that thing through my lashes so many times, and although they did lift upwards a tiny bit; I was definitely a disappointed customer.

I do not recommend this product. It retails at around $16.00 depending where you live. I bought it online at Beatymark.

The Japonesque website claims that it is ideal for hard to curl lashes like mine, but do not be fooled.

I will stick to my Revlon eyelash curler with the spring. It seems to work the best so far.

A Star-Studded Night For First Annual Noble Awards

“It was a successful night, everyone who contributed and participated in the event came away with a warm feeling in their heart,” said Creator and Founder Janeen Mansour of The Noble Awards, held (Sunday, October 18^th) at The Beverly Hilton, Beverly Hills.
Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush hosted the first awards show, and he himself was also honored for his dedication as a board member and hustling fundraiser for the Lollipop Theater Network. They bring magic and movies currently in theaters to children confiened to hospitals nationwide due to chronic or life-threatening illnesses.

The event honored  Morgan Freeman with a Lifetime Achievement Award and dozen other celebs received recognition and a Noble Award for charity work.

Despite being a little under the weather for running a Trianthalon in the name of charity Terri Hatcher accepted her award from Actor James Denton, America’s favorite plummer also on Desperate Housewives.

Other celebs included  Norman Lear,  Lionel Richie, Laila Ali, Nancy O’Dell, Joel  Madden, Brett Ratner, Kenny Babyface  Edmonds, and Annalynne McCord. There  were some surprises, too like America’s  Got Talent Nick Cannon as one of the presenters.

The first awards show came off without a hitch and the live music performances enhanced an inspiration evening. It was an evening of entertainment and celebration that honors charities, celebrities and the tremendous work that they do.

‘This event and movement should inspire the next generation to be noble throughout their lives,” said Mansour.

One of the highlights of the musical performance that brought the house down was Monica, introduced by Bill Bush. Born and raised in Atlanta, Monica Denise Arnold is a talented R&B / pop singer, songwriter and actress.  She became the youngest female artist ever to have two back-to-back No. 1 hits on Billboard’s R&B singles chart. Both songs from her three-times-platinum debut, “Miss Thang,” topped the Hot 100 chart and sold one million copies each. In 1998,

“The Boy Is Mine” was released and had three consecutive No. 1 Billboard pop singles. The title track with Brandy spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on the pop charts and eight weeks at No. 1 on the R&B listing. Additionally, the duet earned Monica a Grammy to add to her American Music, Soul Train and Billboard Awards.

The inaugural NOBLE AWARDS event, produced on behalf of the non-profit Celebrity Charity Awards Corporation, a 501c3, has a mission to unify the efforts of charities with celebrities, philanthropists, media and every day citizens to create
an effective forum for change and service.

Komen for the Cure, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and Children’s Hospital, among others. Her latest CD “Always True” is now available in the Store. Her first three CDs, “Five Years Wise”, “The Love In Us” and “Once Upon A Wish” are also available.

The Lion’s King’s Timothy Mitchell also sang and played a powerful song on piano sounding much like Steve Wonder with a great stage band backing him up.

Each year the Noble Awards will recognize and honor philanthropic organizations and the celebrities that make considerable contributions to them. This year’s honorees, who attended to accept their award included Nancy O’Dell for Best Buddies International, AnnaLynne McCord for The Blind Project, Teri Hatcher for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Brett Ratner forDoSomething.org, Billy Bush for Lollipop Theater Network, Whitney Burditt for Playing for Change, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds forStand Up To Cancer, Laila Ali for Women’s Sport Foundation and a charity very close to my heart, The Art of Elysium honoring Joel Madden.

Julio Iglesias Jr.also provided some soul soothing live singing at the event. Julio Iglesias Jr.was born in Madrid, Spain to well-known singer, Julio Iglesias and Isabel Preysler. He moved to Miami, Florida at a very young age, a place he now considers home.

Jennifer Howell, Founder of The Art of Elysium, presented this award to Joel Madden with Lionel Richie, Allison Beck and Stacey Price: “As both an artist and a father, Joel truly embodies a sincere passion for both music and children.  It was evident in his beautiful and humble acceptance speech where he expressed his heartbreak at the thought of a child spending one second inside of a hospital.  A moment that was also extremely moving was when his twin brother Benji (who has spent many days with The Art of Elysium teaching guitar and participating in music workshops) shared his love for his brother with a music dedication.

Nicole Richie (who has also dedicated her talents to the charity) looked on lovingly while her Father introduced Joel and thanked him for loving his daughter so much.  The love, support and generosity that was shown by all members of Joel’s family are the true roots that can help take The Art of Elysium’s mission to every child that spends that terrifying one second in a hospital.”

Creator Janeen Mansour was thrilled to see her dream come true.

“The goal of the Noble Awards was to highlight the charities there that night and celebrities that champion them,” she said. “Our goal reached far beyond my expectations. The purpose of the Noble Awards is to create awareness and send out a call to action. I feel everyone in the room was inspired and moved and understood the message we were trying to convey. That message is to be a Noble.”
